Setsuna: White, aims to end the game quickly via use of Rooks, Bishops and Knights, fairly high-mobility pieces.

Tina: Black, prefers to react to opponent's moves instead of making them herself.

Tieren: Black, plays extremely aggressive and prioritises capturing opposing pieces. (He's not very good at chess)

Kei: White, takes a strategist approach and plays neutrally. Neither offensive nor defensive.

Lunae: White, uses her Queen liberally and offensively, supported by Rooks and Bishops.

Graham: Black, aggressive but not overly so. Either makes his moves slowly or extremely quickly.

Jocelyn: White, prefers to keep her pieces safe. Doesn't take the initiative or opt to capture pieces, only doing so whilst defending her pieces.

Yu: Black, sacrifices everything to protect his King. Plays overly defensive.

Rachel: Black, uses her Knights often. Sets up traps by sacrificing pawns.

Ferus: Black, surprisingly defensive. Plays around his opponent's moves.

Emile: White, leans slightly toward defence rather than offence. Isn't afraid to expose his King.

In order: Kei > Ferus > Rachel > Emile > Tina > Setsuna > Graham > Lunae > Jocelyn > Yu > Tieren

"Dust almighty-" Setsuna let go of his saber and threw himself to one side, with the end result of the kick half-connecting on his thigh. With no time to really control where he was going to land, the boy landed roughly in the snow and rolled a little before getting back up, pulling a dagger bit from his shield to replace his sword, now buried in the snow next to Shiroe. "That wasn't very nice of you." Setsuna remarked, holding the dagger in front of his chest as he gave Shiroe enough time to stand back up - daggers were even worse against a prone opponent, though he should have taken a different approach in the first place.

Regardless of whether Shiroe decided to take the opportunity to stand, Setsuna swept forward again, aided by his Semblance's speed to once more dive on his opponent. With his right hand he aimed two fast, darting cuts at his opponent's waist while his left reached for his sword before bringing it down diagonally across Shiroe's chest.

Setsuna's Stats:
  ● Aura: [█████████-] 85% [7% from rune-boosted kick]
  ● Weapons: Discord, Harmony

Combat Data:
  ● Attacks: Twin quick cuts (4% x 2), diagonal overhead slash (6%)
  ● Semblance: ACTIVE - 50/60 seconds

"Yeah, no, apart from you going on extremely high alert." Setsuna said, securing his backpack and his shield. "If you'd like to enlighten the team it would be much appreciated, otherwise none of us have any idea why we're just staying in the building." Even his soft voice managed to semi-echo in the room, making the leader finally notice the extraordinary silence. "Never mind. Anna, any idea what's coming?" Taking Teddy's advice, the sword in his hand was gripped tighter as Setsuna took a position next to the door.

"Aye, ma'am!" Jocelyn salutes semi-mockingly, before another trigger on her jumppack sends her soaring through the air in a backflip to land a good distance away from where the fight would take place. She couldn't help but think to herself that the new teammate was somewhat arrogant and reckless, but first impressions didn't always define the person underneath. "Come on, Coco. Give the two some space, you heard Prism." That was in case Coco was still busy staring at Azure - the stare didn't go unnoticed.

As Steam Flower's wings folded into their compact position, Jocelyn took a seat on the hard floor, sitting cross-legged and placing her rifle to her right in case of an emergency application of her Semblance. From what she could see initially, Azure came with nothing but her guitar, so either she was a brawler or that guitar transformed in some way. Dustthrower perhaps? Jocelyn had seen some heavy metal shows being broadcasted on scroll before - reruns, she wasn't particularly interested in that genre and wouldn't go out of her way to watch one - and there had been a flamethrower mounted on the lead guitarist's electric guitar. Spewed flame whenever they strummed chords repeatedly. Most importantly, she was interested to see how Azure would handle Prism's whole flying battle style. "Standing by for medical assistance. Ready when you are."

"So you won't hold it against me if Alter takes his sorry ass and boots it into next week's rubbish collection then." Rachel deadpans, her axolotl stalks calming down and returning to their nestled position behind her ears. With her Faunus eyesight, she could see the man winking, and raised an eyebrow in return. Whatever it meant, she didn't have a clue currently.

Something about Hart's last sentence stuck in Rachel's head, however. Different from fighting, and apparently not very enticing to others... Should be profitable if he can wager enough to take a top fighter off another's hands. Could it be? The fighting had already begun below, so Rachel leant back in her seat to 'enjoy' the show - and also to analyse both fighter's moves. Couldn't hurt to learn while on a mission, right?

The overextended hunter-in-training barely had time to finish cutting through one Creep before its companions joined the fray, a tail lashing through the smoke created by the dissipating corpse to sneak around his legs and knock Tieren on his back. It succeeds, but not before Tieren is able to take a firm grip on the tail and slam the offending Grimm hard onto the floor next to him. "Lookie here, I got a morningstar and I'm not afraid to use it!" Tieren grins before swinging the unfortunate Creep in circles around his head, potentially giving the other two Creeps bitchslaps across the face depending on the distance before hurling it high in the sky. An easy target for their team's sniper to take - provided she was paying attention to the entire battlefield.

Clearing his immediate surroundings by swinging his sword a full circle around him before standing up, Tieren takes a battle-ready stance, left hand held in front with fingers doing a recognisable "come on" gesture while his right held his fully extended sword behind his back.

Tieren’s Stats:
  ● Aura: [█████████-] 95%
  ● Semblance: 0% active [0% DMG reduction]

Continuing on from before:

Tina: Forgot how to English IRL
Tieren: Severe anger issues
Kei: Might as well be mute
Lunae: "If I were a bad demowoman, I wouldn't be standin' here, discussin' it with ya now would - BOOM"
Yu: Actual backstabber who would abandon any of his friends in a heartbeat
Rachel: Tastes like eel when cooked
Emile: Replaced chivalry boner with literal massive boner

AMA Section / Re: Righty or Lefty?

Now that the site’s fixed I can finally go back to typing my posts out on the site directly. (Thanks Vox). It’s actually quite rare, across the site and the spreadsheet recordings I haven’t come across many lefties at all.

My Graham was designed as a left-hander but the rest are all rights. Purely in combat there’s much that changes if you’re fighting a left-handed swordsman in melee, in the same way you’d play a leftie in racket sports. In theory it would completely throw another swordsman off balance, their training would normally be done against another person who’s right-handed so everything would feel different.

In normal lives you could find things to write about how literally everything’s designed for right-handed people. Door handles, mouses for computers (if they existed), handshakes, stuff like that.

Can you tell I want more left-handed people? And no, adding it as an afterthought doesnt’t really count, the character kinda needs to be designed with it in mind.

Personally I would like to see some more detail on everything, that’s the only major gripe I have with Roux. Even though you’ve read our advice, it still feels barebones but it is an improvement upon the previous iteration.

One thing I will ask is that the weapon description be more than a namedrop of what it’s supposed to be. For example, is there any decorations on the hook? How large or long is it? Is there any sign of previous use eg. dents or scratches? How does the weapon transform/parts-form into its machine gun form? Etc, etc. I know Reaper has already mentioned this but it does bear repeating.

Unlike the giant of a man who was the siblings' father, who was dressed to the nines in smart casuals and would have fit in nearly anywhere if not for his size, Jocelyn and Setsuna’s mother was dressed in the garb of an crisp, albeit slightly faded, Atlesian Army uniform with the emblem of a colonel on her shoulder. Even so, her stern face still managed to look as motherly as any person on Remnant, and nothing like the battle-hardened visages of some of the Atlesian soldiers standing guard around the tournament. The whole family hugged for a few more moments, before Jocelyn darted back to Prism’s side. Even though she knew that this meeting would happen eventually, she still felt really nervous, and seeing Prism’s change in posture to the no-nonsense side of her personality didn’t help.

“Allow me to make the introductions.” Setsuna stepped in, noticing the sudden panic on his sister’s face. Jocelyn shot him a grateful smile as he continued: “Prism, meet our parents; Emile and Marina. Please don’t be concerned by my father’s height, he doesn’t bite.” He motioned grandly at the small bird faunus. “Might I introduce Prism Skylark; the leader of our dear sister’s team CASA, a quarterfinalist in the current Vytal Festival, and a joy to make an acquaintance with.”

Against Jocelyn’s expectations, Marina stepped forward first. Her strict mother, who sent her additional medical work on top of her large workload, who was personally responsible for the rigorous training that led to her becoming a medic, was not the outgoing person in the family. That role was her father’s. Yet it was her who stepped out while Emile stayed behind, ruffling Setsuna’s hair in a affectionate gesture while her brother laughed and protested.

Marina’s expression softened as she took in Prism’s body language, her heels, wings, and absolutely straight face. ”You remind me of myself when I was your age, Prism.” She commented, before smiling. “At ease, soldier. You’re not in a fight or in a classroom, there’s no need to look so serious.”

WiP Characters / Re: Roux Palakiko
« on: March 08, 2019, 09:42:18 AM »
Hello and welcome to the site! It seems you've gotten a chance to read through the rules for creating a character, and I understand that this may well be still incomplete, but there are some things I’d like to point out in order to help you create a character you can be proud of.

Firstly, it’s generally more helpful to the people you’ll be RPing with if they can visualise your character in better detail. This includes some more description for Roux’s appearance, like a general height, what his body shape is like, etc. Simply putting down barebones descriptions is fine but what makes your character stand out instead of looking like a general NPC?

The same would apply to Roux’s history and personality. Apart from more detail, teams are created by asking around and agreeing with others on the site, not defined in the profile. For Roux’s aura, it’s good to define a colour to work with, considering speech on the site is done “like this”. Otherwise, people will struggle to differentiate what Roux is saying and what you’re writing.

For his semblance, I'm not a mod but I do believe that something with the power to kill a dragon, even with severe drawbacks, is not something a 1st year can do. You'll have to ask mods for the details, but I'd recommend changing that for now.

You’ve got the basics down and I look forward to seeing how you continue to develop Roux! There are plenty of approved characters you can examine to get a better grasp on what the general standard of characters on the site are, and please feel free to ask the community for help (we don’t bite, mostly)

”Of course! Anything for our victorious competitor!” Jocelyn beamed. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt so happy for someone who wasn’t her immediate family, and her smile near illuminated the whole table. While Prism continued to look over the menu, Jocelyn turned to thank the waiter who was placing 5 glasses of water on the tabl-

Wait. 5? Were they expecting the remainder of CASA to join them, or even Setsuna’s team ASTC - unlikely as it would be? No, because it would be 6 glasses instead in either case. Nor did she remember any other arrangements, or any that Setsuna had told her. Then who…?

Before the room started falling into a gradual hush, Jocelyn noticed Setsuna sitting up straighter and sporting a smile matching her own. Then, swivelling in her chair in the direction her brother was also facing, her eyes immediately focused upon a giant of a man looming tall over the crowd of hungry yet suddenly quiet spectators. Judging by the muted noise, the rest of the room was also aware of the person’s presence. How could they not? The man’s head wasn’t very far off from brushing the ceiling, and his stature simply screamed ‘menacing’.

Yet, within moments of the man speaking up - Jocelyn was too far away to hear what he said, but whatever it was made the surrounding crowd crack up with laughter - the room returned to its old bustling, hectic state like the man didn’t exist. Then, when a path cleared for the man to walk further into the room, a shorter woman previously cloaked by the multitude of people became visible next to the giant, arms linked together as they made for Prism’s table. In response, Setsuna and Jocelyn practically launched out of their chairs to embrace the two adults. From her position at the table, Prism could clearly hear the siblings’ enthusiastic greetings of ”I’ve missed you so much, Mom!” and ”Long time no see, Father…it’s good to see you again!”

Listening to Smokey’s thought process prompts Lunae to speak up. “Smokey, come on. Does the professor look like he’s armed for a ranged fight?” She gestures at the tall and well-built Hunter, clad in separate pieces of golden armor looking every bit like a Huntsman would be described in a story. Her message probably could stand to be clearer, but she was trying to point out the fact that Ferus was armoured and simply didn’t look like a person who was packing ranged heat. “Anyway, I’ve never seen him use the shells anywhere but right in the Grimm’s face. The recoil, as you’ve surmised, is huge - definitely stronger than an RPG, but might not win in a contest between your own behemoth.”

Lunae casts her mind back, trying to remember the multitude of times the professor took his class out to the Emerald Forest for proper hands-on training. “Far as I know he doesn’t have the same recoil-negating semblance as you do; just simply braces for the recoil. Obviously this doesn’t lend itself to a quick fire rate, but I’m sure you can guess why it doesn’t need one.”

It would sound absurd that the recoil from a shell being unloaded could be counteracted by sheer strength alone, but it needed to be seen to be believed. And, of course, there was the benefit of Aura, which Lunae was more than certain that the professor had to specialise in. How else could the limitations of a human body shoulder what amounted to a medieval cannon’s recoil?

“Y’know, Smokey. Considering literally everything about Professor Ferus’s kit is point-blank, my bet is that the third option is also something along those lines. Though I don’t know what else could fit in there and not be a repeat of the last two…” her voice trails off in thought, eyes staring at the grey metal wall.

“Is it really a revolver action, though? It looks more like a rotating barrel for a cannon.” Lunae joined in with her own thought process. “I can answer for two of the three exits. One works in conjunction with the large chambers - fires what looks like custom-made shells. The second depends on Dust type - a Dustthrower of sorts. Never seen the third tube in action so I can’t speak for that.”

While her family didn’t design weapons from scratch for a living, she still knew enough about how weapons worked, but without dismantling the large weapon there was no way for her to figure out the mechanics behind the lance. Perhaps Smokey could unveil more information. “You’re the expert here Smokey, without a doubt. If you can’t figure out what makes this thing work, there’s no way I can.”

While the two hunters-in-training pored over the professor’s weapon, the Bullhead took off and banked left, heading for the borders between Vale and their neighbouring lands of Vacuo. Meanwhile, Ferus simply sat and listened into the ongoing conversation with some interest.
