Carnation (Cara) Prescott
« on: September 18, 2016, 03:53:11 PM »
CHARACTER

Name: Carnation Prescott

Nickname: Cara

Age: 17, born Amare 5

Species and Gender: Human female

Symbol: Top-down view of a pink carnation

Occupation: First year at Beacon

Appearance: Cara has a solid build, standing at 175cm and weighing 75kg. Her pastel pink hair is typically tied back in a ponytail that goes just past her shoulders. Her soft eyes and warm, inviting smile make her seem almost motherly much of the time, though she adopts a stern "down-to-business" face during combat.

Typical clothing consists of a white blouse with a brooch in the shape of her symbol fastened on her upper chest. She wears black pants and a belt on which she keeps a side pack full of snacks and medicine (carefully sorted, of course). Combat attire goes overtop of this outfit and consists of a steel breastplate and light armor on the legs, with leather pauldrons and gauntlets on her arms. While the brooch is no longer a part of her combat attire, her symbol still appears as it is drawn on her shield.

History: Cara grew up right in the middle of Vale city, where her parents ran a dust shop known as Manifest Dustiny (a name pretty much everyone groaned at, it's not just you). The family lived comfortably in the floor above their store. Life in the big city allowed Cara to see all kinds of lifestyles, from the decadent lives of the rich to the downtrodden lives of the poor, and of course the average life of her family. The Prescotts had always devoted themselves to helping the less fortunate citizens of Vale through community service projects and fundraising drives. As such, the family was well-liked and well-respected by nearly everyone in their community.

When Cara was eight years old, she woke up to commotion downstairs. She heard men shouting and glass shattering. As Cara walked down the stairs to investigate, she heard her father's shaky voice: "Just take the dust, as much as you want... It doesn't matter, just leave me and my family alone..." Cara froze. From where she was standing she could see a group of three armed robbers carrying cases full of dust, her mother's unconscious body lying beside the door. Cara wanted to move and stop them, but her legs wouldn't cooperate. She wanted to scream after them as they left, but her voice wouldn't come. In a confused mixture of anger and fear, Cara simply stood there until her father came out from behind the counter and put her back to bed.

The family fell on hard times after the robbery, still able to support themselves but not able to support the community. Concerned neighbors came by and asked how they were doing, to which they always replied some form of "we could be worse." It was during this time that Cara realized how she wanted to contribute to the community. Picking up trash and gathering money wasn't enough; she would become a defender of the people.

Cara brought this idea to her family, who thought it was a great idea. As soon as the Prescotts were back on their feet, Cara was sent off to Signal for combat training. Cara made friends quickly and lived happily at school. She devoted herself to becoming stronger and passed every test with flying colors, making her an ideal prospect for Beacon to pick up.

Personality: As far as Cara is concerned, she swore to protect the innocent the day she enrolled at Signal. She is kind, generous and understanding to her friends, and will take care of them if they get hurt or sick. She also stands up for any and all victims of bullying, showing none of the same respect to bullies that she shows everyone else.

While Cara will gladly take part in events or talk any time she's free, she's never the one to initiate such interactions. If nobody needs her for anything, Cara will keep herself occupied with her studies and solo training. When she thinks she's alone, her sweet tooth shows through, and she eats what is probably an unhealthy amount of snacks. This stash of snacks is one thing she is not willing to share.

Cara hates conflict and tries to take everyone's opinion into account when forming her own. If two other people are arguing, she will try to help them come to an agreement and keep the most convincing smile on her face that she can muster. While decent at solving people problems, she's not so good at solving practical problems. Sure, she's smart as far as knowledge, but she's lacking in terms of logical analysis. When it comes to puzzle-solving or strategy, she acts on intuition rather than thinking things through.

Aura and Semblance: Pink #e51cb4
Cara's semblance is a risk-vs-reward system that allows her to regain lost aura. At any given time, she can dump all of her remaining aura into her shield. This concentrated aura will be able to sustain five times as much damage as it could on her body and absorb the entire impact from attacks, but all of it will be lost when the semblance ends. Meanwhile, Cara will start regenerating the aura around her body at a rate of 20% per minute. The semblance will end when Cara gets hit with the equivalent of at least 1% aura damage, reaches 100% aura, runs out of aura in the shield, or cancels it manually. Whatever happens, Cara will be left with the amount of aura she had when the generation stopped and will have to drop to zero again if she wants to start over.

Because the initial activation of her semblance leaves Cara with no aura, she would never be crazy enough to use it while injured or under attack from multiple angles. Her main strategy is to use it when her aura drops low, but not too low, and then adopt a defensive stance. Once she builds past 50%, she may decide to be more aggressive and risk getting hit, or she may not depending on the situation.

Combat Behavior: Cara is a front line "DPS" who excels in one-on-one combat thanks to her high battlefield sustain. She can be the vanguard against multiple opponents, assuming she has allies to back her up, but in this situation she fights very defensively. Her toolkit is designed to allow her to choose an attacking, defending, or balanced style based on her team's needs. "Evasion" isn't really in her vocabulary, preferring to focus on controlling an opponent face-to-face with the use of her shield. She struggles when attacked from multiple angles and lacks any form of ranged attack.

WEAPON

Name: Attack and Defense

Primary Form: A shortsword (Attack) and heater shield (Defense) intended for Cara's balanced style. The shield is used for parrying blows more than absorbing them, and covers about half her body. It should be noted that Cara fights left-handed, with the shield in her right.

Secondary Form: The sword rapidly extends into a pointed lance, while the hilt twists into a hand guard. Meanwhile, the shield expands into a large kite which covers most of Cara's body and is now used more for absorbing blows. This transformation happens so fast that Cara can actually start a sword thrust and have a lance in her hand by the time it connects. This form is used for Cara's defensive style and works well against ranged opponents, who will have trouble passing her shield.

Tertiary Form: The sword is inserted at the top of the shield, which morphs to form the blade of a comically large two-handed sword used exclusively for attacking. The transformation takes about three seconds from when Cara puts the two together and the same time is needed to revert. Cara's semblance won't work properly if activated with her weapon in this form, but if a strengthened shield is used in the transformation, the weapon will be powered up by an amount dependent on how much aura is in the shield. This configuration leaves Cara pretty much defenseless, especially if used during her semblance, but can rapidly wear down an enemy's defenses and will wipe out Grimm creeps in a single swipe.

History: The lazy names of Cara's weapons come from the sheer exhaustion she had after making a number of failed experimental weapons. Knowing she wanted a combination of attack and defense, she went through several designs to accomplish this. First was a halberd with a dust chamber in the end intended for defensive escape. Next was a club that folded out like an umbrella to form a shield. After that came a bow with rope arrows to move around the battlefield... even though she had no marksmanship or tightrope walking skills. She even tried a pitchfork that separated into a MASSIVE rake to keep foes at bay. Needless to say, all of these ideas failed miserably. She eventually settled upon the three mode weapon style for the sake of adaptability.

If Cara gets approved I'll have rounded out my roster in terms of combat roles, genders, and races. Now I guess I'll have to actually use these characters.
