Beacon Academy / Re: Philosophy Pondering Particulates [CLOSED]

The wolf rolled his eyes and returned to his crystal sorting, lips pursed at the notion that they needed to cut back. Sure, it was a reasonable concern, but his own effectiveness in the field was so tied to the resource. The wolf hummed as he set down a few more bundles of crystals, leaning back in his chair with the majority of his work already done. "I mean, I see what you mean, but what good does cutting back do if it risks us losing where it counts? It's not like we have to pay outta pocket for this, we've got Beacon as a supplier, yeah?"

The wolf smirked. Knowing Cloe, she probably dragged Prism along for "Hot girl shit", namely errands, window shopping, and girl talk. While Juno wasn't opposed to the current task of organizing their recent dust acquisitions, he would have preferred to go along with the girls. A day out in the city was preferable to spending hours sorting and stacking dust crystals. At the very least, with the two of them hard at work, they could make good time.

An ear flicked back as Lucas spoke up again, an eyebrow raised as he complained about the volume of work. "I mean, it has to be done. N' at this pace, it shouldn't take too long." He offered, packing away another few wrapped pyramids of ice dust crystals. "Besides, doing all this in one afternoon was all your idea."

A sniper, a dust caster, and a brawler. He could absolutely work with this. Lucas's dust enhancement could potentially synergize well with Prometheus, though the effects would remain to be seen. Prism already showed her skills, and her own dust casting abilities were impressive. Having an eye in the sky was always good regardless; more vantage points allowed for greater opportunities. And Cloe... She had already proven to be quite quick, and her strength was impressive. A solid bruiser applying pressure in the close range is a valuable asset, and a role that Juno himself was usually more inclined to take. All of these specialized roles... and Juno was now at the liberty to swap between the three as needed. They'd just need the right direction for everything to flow smoothly...

He smirked as Prism finished her piece, taking a moment to flick the brim of his hat up with his usual swagger. "N' I'm Juno Varia. It's good to have some names to apply to faces." He mused, hooking his thumbs in his pockets and nodding toward Lucas and Cloe. "Reassuring ain't the half of it, y'all caught on quick to what I was setting up. Synergy like that's important, n' if we can keep this up, this'll be a cake walk." Bold words, to be sure, but Juno was confident. Everyone seemed to at least know what they were doing, and their end goal was laughably simple.

This would be over and done with before lunch.

"Because winning requires burning a ton of it." Juno replied, attempting to organize a mess of crystals laid out on his desk. Their repeated victories were never without a cost, and at about 10 lien for a tube of powder, bills would be racking up if they weren't sponsored by Beacon. Even so, their dust use was kind of obscene. Their last mission had almost exhausted their field supply... over the course of a six hour deployment. Whoever was managing supply drops probably threw a fit.

The wolf leaned back in his chair, having carefully individually wrapped a nice pyramid of crystals for storage. There was still much more work to be done, ideally before everyone had to sleep, but with the amount of work left, they could be working well into dinner. "Where did the others say they were going again?"

The wolf couldn't help but smirk as the pieces of his plan fell into place. The lantern boy was another dust caster, though he seemed more suited to support and backline casting than his own offensive application. Even so, this other caster displayed an understanding of his craft that surpassed his own, with a near effortless and instantaneous gravity cast that trapped half of their targets within range of Prometheus. The dog faunus seemed more of a frontline skirmisher, bullying more targets into his trap with devastating hits and the assistance of a shotgun. And Prism... Not only an effective sniper, but also an effective dust caster, as she froze all remaining targets in place, opening them up for his final strike. It was clean, methodical, and efficient.

He could work with this crew for a while.

“All yours, Juno!”

Right. He was ready, like shooting fish in a barrel. His seal burned, actively setting the grass alight as he released his sword and raised his left hand, stepping back just enough to avoid the direct blast of his own seal.

"Step back." He warned, reaching to hang onto his hat a mere moment before he snapped his fingers. The seal flashed white before igniting into a brilliant pillar of magenta fire, the force and heat of the ensuing detonation immolating the horde of Beowolves trapped within. Terrified and pained howls filled the air, only silenced as the twelve beasts were reduced to ash. When the pillar subsided, Juno remained still, brow furrowed as the formerly wet grass underfoot turned to singed, crunchy brush. Too much more of that could start a wildfire. He'd have to keep that in mind. His gaze moved from the ashy clearing to the bushes and treeline surrounding them, studying for any further signs of Grimm.

Nothing. His ears didn't pick up anything unnatural either. His posture relaxed, a hand moving to his pocket as he rolled his shoulders back, cracking his neck. This was his team for the next four years. He could work with this.

"So." He started, taking a moment to acknowledge the other two students, waving them all over to his position. "Roll call?"

As the wolf rocketed forward, he tore through the remaining two closest targets with ease, his blade a nearly unseen flash as it left and returned to his sheath in several fluid motions. A quick survey of the surroundings showed that about 12 targets remained, with an unknown amount deeper into the forest. Currently, Prism seemed focused on thinning out the backline, meaning he was left with the brunt of the approaching targets. All according to plan.

The wolf kept his blade at the ready, but maintained a defensive posture as he began to cast a new, pink seal, its edge starting from where he stood and expanding into the breadth of the clearing. Two more students were present at the far end, the previous focus of their opposition and the source of that weird green kinetic pulse... Their positioning was actually perfect for what he had planned.

”Draw them into the circle for me. I need a moment, but I can take them all out!” He barked toward the other students, keeping his form steady as he pumped more fire dust into the seal, its outline in the ground glowing a vibrant pink as the grass underneath began to singe.

The wolf took stock of his situation and parameters, one hand in his pocket and the other resting on the hilt of his sword as he wandered aimlessly through the Emerald Forest. He hadn’t seen any ruins from his ascent, but he did notice that the forest began to thin out near the cliff sides up north. It shouldn’t be much of an issue to just book it for the cliffs; any substantial ruins that stood to this day would likely be composed of rock anyway, which would require a large enough clearing to permit construction and a nearby source of suitable rock.

At the same time, though, the headmaster emphasized the importance of a partner, so showing up with the relic alone was likely not an option. While he counted at least 16 students on the launch pads, he was among the last to launch, and he didn’t see anyone fly past or above him.

Time to backtrack, then.

His eyes flicked around the path, catching a black silhouette broken up by hints of white and blazing red. Grimm, Beowolf most likely. A deep exhale left his lips as he steeled himself, slowing his movements and attempting to calm his nerves… only for the figure to disappear further into the forest, up toward a clearing ahead. His eyes flicked around, spotting a second, and a third, all avoiding him in favor of what might have been a more appealing catch… Someone was in trouble.

His grip on his blade tightened as he strode forward, his hand leaving his pocket as he moved toward the fray, sounds of impact and conflict already ringing from the clearing up ahead.

An unfamiliar voice broke his focus, an ear flicking under the brim of his hat as he located the source of the intrusion.

”Hey, douchebag.”

He whirled around at the remark, eyes locking with the androgyne from before. Their small stature was only emphasized by their rifle, which stood just about as tall as they did. If this was his partner… Well, he’s settled for less imposing figures before. An eyebrow raised as they continued, his hidden ears moving slightly to try and keep tabs on the conflict behind him. The bird had the same idea as him, it seemed. At the very least, they seemed serious and proactive enough.

He beckoned them with a wave, turning to move into the clearing. ”I’m already way ahead of you.” He started, his grip tightening on the sheath of his sword, eyes narrowing as he assessed the rapidly growing pool of targets. There was already an initiate directly engaging with the crowd of beowolves, and while she seemed to be performing decently, her action and stress could cause the crowd to grow faster than she could reduce those numbers. They’d have to act quickly, but they couldn’t afford to be reckless. “I’m hoping you’re a decent shot, yeah?” He started, turning his head back to acknowledge his new partner.

“Try to remove some targets as they enter the crowd, I’ll engage directly with the death ball and help this one thin the numbers. On my mark.” As he spoke, a gray seal began to materialize under his feet as he gathered his aura and focused it into his sheathed blade. He bent his knees, tucking his body in as he prepared to lunge forward, readying an empowered slash in hopes of removing more than one target. He kept his eyes trained on the nearest group of wolves, noting as their attention became diverted toward his side of the clearing. His eyes flicked back to his partner, a small smirk playing at his lips as he spoke. ”By the way, this douchebag’s name is Juno.” He remarked, re-focusing his attention as the trio of Beowolves began to break off from the group.

”Mark!”

Juno had heard stories of the initiation process at Beacon. He had been sent videos, theorized launches and landing tactics, and watched enough fail compilations to fill any middle schooler’s browser history. The assignment was simple enough: acquire the asset and return alive. Easy.

His eyes turned to the other students as they were unceremoniously flung into the air, some taking to the skies as though it were their natural element, others flailing about in a fit of panic as gravity introduced itself. He watched the arc of one such student, frowning a bit as he hit the apex and proceeded to fall off. The ruins would be deep in the forest, so reducing the amount of legwork and travel would be ideal…

As the line went down, Juno prepared his semblance. A gray sigil, similar to the one at his back, began to materialize at his feet, glowing with a growing intensity as dust energy was pumped into its frame…

The sound of the platform’s hydraulic release was overshadowed by a violent eruption of kinetic dust, as the young man was gone in a blur of white and black. The wind whistled through his hair as he flew, propelled and boosted by his semblance as the air rushed around him. He had been thrown from high height’s before, the recovery would be of little issue. All that mattered was finding a solid enough vantage point to spot the objective in the first place. As he sailed along his forward trajectory, however, he noticed that the speck in the distance was rapidly growing larger and more… person-like. He wouldn’t collide, but at the rate he was going, he was definitely going to interrupt their landing. The least he could do was offer the poor sap a warning.

He barely heard his own voice as he shouted at the approaching and somewhat femboyish shape, managing enough of a glance to watch him… her? Them. Enough of a glance to watch them fumble in the backdraft of his missile-like trajectory. However their landing went, it was probably going to hurt. Hopefully they made it out.

Juno quickly returned his focus to his own flight, shifting his weight as he began to descend. The treeline seemed endless, a vast sea of green broken up by small patches and clearings. No sign of ruins, either, so that was a bit of a wash. With a sizable clearing rapidly approaching, Juno launched himself downward, using his forward momentum to carry himself into the desired patch of land. He braced his legs as he impacted the ground, somehow managing to stay on his feet despite coming in a lot hotter than he anticipated… as evidenced by the chunks of dust and dirt and miniature crater he left in his wake.

At the very least, he was on the ground, and the mission was on. The lack of any notable landmarks was a concern, and he was likely much farther out into the forest than any of the other students.

Meh, he’d figure it out.

CHARACTER

Name: Juno Varia

Age: 21

Species and Gender: Male Grey Wolf Faunus

Symbol: Prometheus: Reign Fire

Spoiler: ShowHide

Occupation: Beacon Student, SET Operative

Appearance: Juno is a strong, athletic, dark skinned man standing at 5’10” and weighing in at 180 lbs. His hair is long, slightly unkempt, hides a pair of wolf ears within its mass and pronounced bangs, and is colored a deep purple bordering on black. His eyes are an unmistakable hue of pink, matching both his aura and the accent color of much of his clothing. He bears a pair of thin scars on his face, one over his left eye and another up his cheek on the right side of his face. He is rather fit, built like a kickboxer with defined and cut musculature.

His combat and casual attire are similar, as he wears a black top, black pants, black gloves, a lilac holster and belt harness, and a white and pink windbreaker with matching sneakers. In combat, he tends to opt for a rather form-fitting sleeveless top, while he is more content with wearing more loose and baggy clothing in his day-to-day life. The windbreaker itself is quite prized, with a white exterior with black tubing, pink accents, and a pink interior. The back of the windbreaker bears his symbol, the seal for Prometheus.

He often forgoes the Beacon uniform’s trademark blazer, instead preferring to wear the vest and shirt with sleeves rolled up past the elbow. He will still keep the blazer on his person, however, in the event that his choices draw criticism from authority.

History: Juno Varia is a natural born citizen of Mantle, hailing from the Northwest boroughs. He is the only child of former Huntress, Hera Azhul-Varia and deceased former dust miner, Steward Varia. He doesn’t remember much about his father, as many of the memories he had made were overshadowed by the tragedy of his loss, and the unfortunate spiral that followed. The lack of compensation from the SDC meant that Juno and his mother could no longer live in the comfort of their middle class neighborhood, and Hera had to work far longer hours in order to support them both.

Weekends were for the two of them, however, and Hera did her best to make up for the time she couldn’t spend with young Juno. She knew her son was clever, strong, and she came to find that he was naturally gifted with aura. Yet he was unrefined, lacking direction, and lacking the drive to use his talents. Juno didn’t quite know why his mother suddenly started teaching him how to properly play with swords, let alone how she knew so much about fighting, but the lessons were fun, and his mom was practically a superhero.

His mom also wasn’t always present, and Juno refused to stay cooped up at home all day. Sure, she warned him about some of the kids in the neighborhood, how they were no-good thugs with too much time on their hands and irresponsible parents, but those same kids, the Strays as they called themselves, were nice to him. They taught him how to draw, how to run on the rooftops, a few tricks with his aura, and how to fight. After all, he couldn’t take his sword with him all the time, sometimes the best way to escape was to punch the other guy hard enough that he didn’t punch you again.

And sometimes you had to be the guy telling the other punks around town to back off of your neighborhood.

The Strays engaged in some graffiti and loitering, with the occasional theft and resale of private property, but the reason they were founded was to protect their block. To say they were good at it was an understatement, though with their repeated success came a high level of confidence. Sometime after Juno graduated from high school, the young faunus got the brilliant idea of robbing an SDC transport, then selling the goods and splitting the profits. For weeks, Juno and the Strays scouted and planned around the trains that came and left from the shipping distribution center. Everything was put into motion… and promptly fell apart.

A recent update to the SDC’s security units forced the gang into active combat the second they boarded. When the fighting had ended, several of Juno and several of his companions were incarcerated, their leader had been killed, and hundreds of thousands of lien worth of dust had been destroyed. Juno awaited trial for a month. He was the mastermind, he had convinced the boss to go along with his plan, and by extension it was his poor planning that got people hurt and killed. Not to mention, he had attempted theft and thoroughly damaged the property of the SDC, who no doubt had an army of lawyers hard at work dissecting every facet of his life to find a way to legally destroy everything he cared about.

As all hope for his future seemed lost, Juno had a visitor.

Sarah Anki was the head scientist and director of Special Enhancement Technologies, a PMC that worked heavily in conjunction with the Atlesian Navy and Border Defense. She did not beat around the bush, she was very aware that what he had done would likely put him away until his hair turned gray, but she also came with an offer. Apparently, she had gained access to the security footage aboard the train after the fight, and she was quite impressed with his skillset. She gave him a choice: Either await trial and suffer the consequences of his actions, or work with her and refine his skillset.

Frankly, there wasn’t much of a choice to be made. Juno joined up with SET, to be trained as an operator for one of their enhanced powersuit units. His skills in aura and combat were refined under an intense training regiment of two years, but there was only so much that isolated training under a private military could offer in the world of Remnant, even with Atlesian resources available. As such, Sarah had arranged for her four prototype pilots to enroll in Beacon Academy, with full authorization to use their suits and onboard AI. Sarah rationalized this as a means to both bolster the skills of her pilots, and gather valuable field data for further refinement of her equipment.

Such was the plan, anyway, until his companion AI was stolen, the culprit apparently coming from within the company and escaping into the tundra with a mech unit. Many details were kept from the team about the specifics of this thief, but they were given a description, a picture, and a name: Fiona Dahlia.

While the loss of his equipment was a setback, Juno was insistent on joining the other pilots at Beacon. High tech armor or not, the opportunity was invaluable, and a huntsman's license meant he would never be without a job. Besides, after all the training he had already received, four years at a university was going to be a cakewalk. Only time will tell if his confidence bears any weight.

Personality: On the surface, Juno appears relaxed, laid back, and infuriatingly casual. He walks with his hands in his pockets, talks with the accent and vernacular of an inner city punk, and barely seems to be paying attention to his surroundings. He barely seems to care for or acknowledge authority, regarding those in power with no more respect or attention than he would anyone else.

Underneath this ruse, Juno is deceptively smart and dangerously perceptive. He is almost always taking in information, studying, and analyzing the world around him. He is well aware that his background and upbringing lend themselves to certain stereotypes and judgments, and plays off of them in order to better hold his cards to his chest. After all, who would expect the formerly incarcerated street punk to be a powerful dust caster?

It should also be stated that in spite of his nonchalant and seemingly uncaring attitude, he is a kind and caring man who is more than happy to talk things out or spend time with people.

He is not without his faults, however. As much as he plays off of the expected perceptions and biases of others, he is prone to making quick judgment calls of his own based on the information that he has gathered and his personal biases, particularly toward affluent humans or people in “unearned” positions of power.

He can also be rather short-sighted at times, getting lost in the minutia of a plan or situation rather than stepping back and seeing the bigger picture, or even the perspectives of others. Unfortunately this means that he isn’t always in a position to listen to advice or help, regardless of how useful it may be.

Aura and Semblance: Juno’s aura is colored somewhere between pink and magenta, and occasionally manifests as a pink, wispy flame around his body.

Prometheus: Juno’s semblance allows him to create aura seals of various sizes, within a 50 foot radius, and within 360 degrees of space. These seals can be empowered with dust, granting anyone with an active aura who stands on these seals with an additional effect based on the type of dust used. These effects last for a maximum of two turns upon the recipient leaving the seal. Juno can also detonate the seal, as well as the dust that it has been empowered with, causing significant damage and secondary effects on the field depending on the types of dust used. Before any particular seal detonates, it lights up into a brilliant pink, the same color as Juno's aura.

Fire: Recipient’s melee and aura attacks are now enhanced with fire. Detonation results in a fiery explosion.
Ice: Recipient’s melee and aura attacks now cause chunks of ice to materialize on any surface hit. Detonation flash-freezes the area within the seal.
Electric: Recipient’s melee and aura attacks are now enhanced with lightning. Detonation calls forth a devastating lightning bolt from within the seal outward.
Earth: Recipient receives rocky armor to bolster their defense. Detonation prompts rocky structures to jut out from the seal.
Kinetic: The next movement taken by the recipient launches them in a direction of their choosing. Detonation results in a concussive wave being fired from the epicenter of the seal.
Gravity: Gravity Seals can act as platforms for friend and foe alike to stand upon. Detonation draws anything within the seal toward the epicenter before exploding.

Juno cannot have more than three seals active at a time, and larger seals require him to burn a larger supply of dust, but result in a more potent effect. The minimum dust investment for any seal is 10% of a single dust battery, and the maximum investment is two full batteries. Larger seals also require greater time investment in order to focus the dust energy contained within, for one turn every 20% of a battery. After dismissing or detonating a seal, he cannot summon another for two turns.

Combat Behavior: Juno is not the most tempered swordsman, the most powerful melee combatant, the most skilled aura artist, or the most dangerous dust caster. What he is good at is blending all of the practices, arts, and skills that he possesses to devastating effect. His martial and aura arts have granted him an impressive array of tools to use in the battlefield, from trap mines and empowered aura slashes to aggressive melee combos and devastating iaijutsu strikes. His personal goal is to end a fight quickly and efficiently.

In single combat, Juno will take his time learning how to properly combat his opponent, studying their responses to his actions and developing potential countermeasures and counterplay as the fight goes on. When faced with greater numbers, however, he will forgo this process and instead play indiscriminately with his semblance, as it is his most effective tool for clearing out crowds of enemies.

He regularly makes use of his aura's empowerment to bolster his movement in combat, repositioning when he needs to and playing into and out of the ranges of his opposition. He is also not above using his aura to attack with projectiles, casting sword beams and punches at a distance outside of his natural physical range.

Naturally, as a result of his kit, Juno is very resource reliant. In the event he runs out of dust, he loses access to his more threatening ranged tools and must fall back on his swordplay, martial arts, and aura techniques.

PRIMARY WEAPON

Name: Senga

Primary Form: A black, 3.5’ long chokuto with an executioner styled blade, made of a sturdy, dust conducting material. The undecorated, rectangular handguard is a lighter gray, with a similarly colored and shaped pommel. The grip of the sword is not wrapped, though it is partially shaped with grooves just underneath the handguard for the index and middle fingers. The sheath of the sword is similarly undecorated and utilitarian, with the only additions to its long, rectangular shape being a trapezoidal assembly near the mouth of the sheath that contains space for a pair of interchangeable dust batteries.

Dust Functions: As the blade is made of a conductive material, it can be imbued with dust through the sheath. This can have a wide range of effects, from fire or lightning enhanced sword strikes, to summoning pillars or spikes of ice and earth.

History: Senga was initially crafted by Juno’s mother, Hera, and granted to him when she began to teach him how to fight and defend himself. The addition of a Dust Battery system and the replacement of the blade with its current conductive counterpart were all enacted during Juno’s tenure with SET.

SECONDARY WEAPON

Name: SET Personal Dust Enhancement Unit: “Flash Knuckle”

Primary Form: A pair of bicep-long, black, dust conducting gloves, with gray studs at the elbows, knuckles, and fingernails. If one looks closely enough at the plating on his elbows, one will find the SET insignia engraved into it.

Dust Functions: These gloves allow Juno to directly apply dust and dust effects to his hands, allowing for greater ease and transmission of dust for his semblance, or finer manipulation of dust through his aura.

History: Crafted by Sarah Anki during Juno’s tenure at SET, these were a gift given to him before he started at Beacon. Sarah believed it would be a beneficial tool to help him enhance his abilities.

Welp. Any cover he had was just blown wide open, but quite frankly that was the least of his worries at the moment. There were three assailants in total, judging from the commotion in the alley, and the one he had to engage could dissolve their body into smoke at will. Getting in range was already going to be tricky, now actually hitting them was a concern as well. And what was worse, this thug knew who he was.

He couldn't allow this recognition to distract him, however, as his opponent eventually stopped playfully twirling their guns and opted to take aim, barely giving the young man enough time to construct a simple, two layered shield before six shots rang out. At first Juno thought he was fine, his shield had only broken once before, and that was a fringe case. Then he saw cracks where the rounds impacted.

After about three shots, the shield shattered entirely, dissolving into nothingness and leaving Juno to take two rounds in the chest and one in the shoulder. Whatever kind of gun that was, it was carrying high powered rounds, strong enough to break his shield and send him reeling. Gods, that hurt. But he couldn't afford to stay in one place, his opponent likely had more rounds left in their magazines.

No cover, nowhere to hide... And there were two more to deal with down below. He had to fight.

Juno regained his footing for a moment before slapping the flat of the blade against the roof behind him, sending him forward toward his opponent. However, he was quick to drop into a slide, slashing at his target's legs once he got into his blade's range. At the very least, closing the distance would make it trickier to aim both guns reliably. He could try to maintain his advantage that way.

Gunshots? They weren't from his opponent... How many people trailed Mordred to begin with? Silica said he was a capable fighter, if cocky... He could afford to leave Mordred and his informant to deal with one of the assailants, right?

At this point, it didn't matter, his locker was here and his opponent was distracted. The door to the locker had been thrown open as it embedded itself into the roof, allowing the young man easier access to his blade, and more importantly, his belt, bearing the familiar form of the Hardlight Generator. Wasting no time in donning the belt, Juno slammed the door to the locker, the hand wrapped around his blade's grip squeezing its two triggers as he slammed it into the now empty locker, causing an explosion that sent it careening toward his opponent. It wasn't likely to hit, but it was a distraction. He could recover the locker later.

The Aura is an extension of one's soul. The Weapon, an extension of one's body. It was a simple task, utilizing one's aura to envelop and enhance their weapon. But to go beyond, to extend one's aura past any sort of semblance of physicality...

Juno was unsure how he had managed to do that with Prism in the first place. The Aura Crescent was simple in theory, but its execution required a different mindset. This wasn't physical training. There were no routines, no relearning muscle memory, no kata or movements to be practiced. This was a refinement of the soul, an evolution of one's connection to the world around them. His aura crescent was blunt, rough, unstable, and explosive, much like the aura that he projected.
