Title: At the mountains Summit
Post by: Kingnoname1 on January 03, 2019, 05:20:33 AM
As the team flies to their destination a briefing plays through their scrolls. It is read by reasonably well known Mistrali Huntsman, Sam Copper, who has more or less been given charge over the extended operation to find the Dustsmith. Sam has been trailing the Dustsmith for years now and has a considerable well of experience for the matter. He stays on the line for any questions.

++++++++++++’Over the past three days four Faunus members of the Falcon Haven community have died under mysterious circumstances. Falcon Haven, like many dust mines, has a long negative history in regards to Human-Faunus relations and as such in a of impartiality the towns ruling council has asked for Hunters to help them deal with the situation. With no full Hunters available as they are busy chasing the Dustsmith of securing towns against more immediate threats. There is a fear that even if the attacks are not race related, which they do appear to be, the White Fang, who are becoming more and more active in the region since the Dustsmith’s arrival, might use this situation to rally more to their banner. As such it is of critical import that this situation is resolved as quickly as possible, Falcon Haven is simply too critical a base to let it fall into disarray when it is needed most.

The dangers facing you are likely to be considerable. The despair these murders has caused as well as the bad memories they cause to resurface has attracted a great number of Grimm to the mountain. As it stands few if any land-based Grimm have made a serious attempt to gain entry to Falcon Haven but it’s aerial guns have been firing two days straight to keep the Nevermores, Griffins and Lancers at bay. This is why you won’t be able to land in Falcon Haven itself and must make your way up through the mining shafts. The wildlife isn’t going to be a threat but there is always the possibility of freeholders taking advantage of some of the mostly tapped veins far from the repercussions of Falcon Haven. And past all this is the possible murderer, to make their attacks now just as the Dustsmith is handing out weapons seems too much to be a coincidence so even if they aren’t trained fighters they shouldn’t be approached lightly. If they exist that is. The medical staff and policing force of Falcon Haven should serve as powerful allies regardless and they can shore up any investigative flaws you have.’+++++++++++++

The Bullhead had been flying close to the ground for the last ten minutes as she made her final approach to Falcon Haven. It was a bumpy ride as the pilot had to navigate the rocky outcrops and temperate forests of their environment, Atlesian by her uniform but she didn’t look like any specialist the collected Huntsmen-and-Huntresses-in-Training had seen before and she didn’t offer a name. The reason for this extra danger was clear to anyone looking out the windows, a black shapeless swarm hang heavy around Falcon Haven, Nevermores but too far away to see in any detail,  and the wreckages of airships all around them who had flow too high into the Grimm flock.

Regardless the team made good time and quickly reached the mining shaft they were entering from, around fifty meters above the ground and the Bullhead hovered close enough to make it an easy jump. Up ahead was mostly darkness and a steep climb, miners hadn’t gone this low since the airbase had been constructed which meant the lights although still in place had most of their wiring damage by the mountains various native inhabitants. The flickering lights would probably end up being more of a nuisance than benefit as it stopped peoples eyes adjusting to the dark.

Toast had spent the majority of the trip lounging about the bullhead seemingly without any cares in the world.  In fact, he seemed to be enjoying the bumpy ride as the bullhead tossed and turned to navigate through its environment.

When Sam came on to give the briefing for the mission, the young man nonchalantly listened.  The mission seemed simple enough.  ”So, basically, fight our way up the mountain into the town, then collect jizz samples until we find the guy that’s been killing people,” he summarized succinctly.  He didn’t really have any questions, at least not any that Sam could answer better than the people in the city, so the young faunus simply leaned back, relaxed and enjoyed the rest of his bumpy flight.

When the bullhead arrived at the mining shaft, Toast leapt through the door almost as soon as it opened, performing an acrobatic flip before landing into the cave.  He took quick stock of his surroundings, giving the area a careful scan, but the flickering light made it hard for his eyes to adjust to the darkness quickly.  In any case, he didn’t spy any immediate threat, so he casually leaned against the cave wall as the rest of his team joined him.

Revya listened to the briefing quietly and gave a chuckle at the response from Toast. He had put Ladybug in the bullhead and once the doors opened to let the group out Revya was already on the bike with helmet on.
The instant the doors opened Revya gunned it and flew from the bullhead hitting the ground and skidding slightly spraying rocks around. after landing Revya dismounted and walked the bike towards the cave.
"Glad I brought ladybug, I think her headlights will come in handy." With that comment Revya turned on Ladybug's headlights to try and illuminate the cave in a more reliable manner.

Dawn stood by one of the Bullhead's windows, watching as they passed through the craggy environment. Only at the sound of her scroll did she averted her gaze from the window to look at the holographic screen and listen to Sam's briefing.
She nodded silently as he finished and immediately turned back to the window, having no questions in desperate need of an answer.

When the Bullhead arrived at the mining shaft, Dawn grabbed her skateboard, which was leaning against the wall next to her, tucked it under her arm and then jumped nimbly into the cave. The flickering lights made it hard to get a clearer picture of their surroundings, but nevertheless, she was determined and ready to go "Well then, let's get started guys."

Camelia didn't really mind the rough ride. She'd done far worse to herself when she was starting out with her semblance. Nothing like accidentally smashing your head into an amphitheater's ceiling to get you going. Apart from that, she keenly listened to the briefing given (at a distance) by none other than Sam Cooper, who'd she heard of before. She didn't hear of much unless they had some reputation, too, so that spoke lengths as to how known they were around Hunting circles.

The briefing was clear and concise and Camelia found she had nothing to want for in terms of additional information. She was, however, thoroughly disturbed by Toast's comment, sat opposite and to the side of herself. Collect... jizz samples? What? "...What?" Alas, before she could either figure out what the hell that meant or get an answer, the Bullhead arrived at its destination.

Being armoured as she was (and seeing as how someone'd brought their vehicle along), Camelia decided to bring up the rear. After everyone else was off, she jumped onto the roc below herself, landing with a loud thud accompanied by the rock breaking a bit under her equipment's weight. She immediately took hold of one half of Unity and left the other sheathed, whilst Orion remained on her back for the moment. She'd probably take a hold of it after a bit, depending on how fast they progressed through the mine.

...Jizz samples?

Although the pilot chuckled slightly Sam’s reaction mirrored much of Camelia’s in bewildered annoyance although the experienced huntsman managed to hide it reasonably well. ’There will likely be a little more to it than that Wabul but hopefully for all our sakes I hope the end result is the same. We need Falcon Haven secure if we are going to have a solid base here. But if there aren’t any questions I’ll leave you all to it, I have other debriefs that I have run so I wish you all the best of luck.’ Sam Copper remarked before terminating their call. The bullhead quickly flew away, a little higher than before with it’s lighter load making the ride look a lot smoother.

Illuminated by Ladybug’s headlights it was clear that despite these shafts hadn’t been in use for a while and the lights were playing up they were well made. Cut almost completely square with regular wooden supports showing little or no signs of rot or decay. Slowly going further and further up the shaft curved around itself until it would eventually reach Falcon Haven. It would make dragging Ladybug around difficult unless Revya rode it which would cause problems with noise and additional flammable materials.

The group started to find a fair few offshoots to different parts of the mining system. All of them carved out in the same high quality in craftsmanship and regular breaks to ensure the stability of the entire system. All of them except for one. Harshly carved out with a drill made this tunnel more circular than square and there was a complete absence of any wooden supports. More worryingly there was the sound of mining and heavy machinery coming from further down the tunnel.

If the impromptu group of hunters in training decides to check out this noise it wouldn’t take long before they could hear voices intermingled with all the sounds of industry. Luckily with all the excess noise going around, it would only require a moderate amount of stealth to sneak up on them and get within a reasonable distance of the group. There looked like there were two miners working heavy machinery and other four loading up mining carts The workers were all singing a song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5QeTGcCeug) and working in time to the beat of the words. It was well timed which suggested this being a regular activity. If the group decided that they had to at least check in with Falcon Watch and begin their mission as soon as possible before diverting their attention there was an elevator a fair distance along the main mining shaft. It would bring the group to Falcon Watch quickly although from the look of it the noise could easily be heard over the mining machines.

It took Toast a bit to realize Sam was addressing him when he made his comment, but by the time the faunus realized the huntsman was using his real name, he was already in the mine.  Oh well.

In the meantime, Toast took stock of the surroundings now that there was an adequate source of light, and the environment surprised him slightly.  Whoever built these mines knew what they were doing.  Or, at least, it looked like they knew what they were doing.  Everything looked square and uniform, which made it seem like there was a degree of architectural planning involved.  The only real sign of mine’s abandonment is the faltering lighting system.

Normally, Toast wouldn’t really think too much on any of this as the group wandered through the tunnel, but the jarring difference between what seemed to be the official, if abandoned, portion of the mine and the one off-shoot that lacked the support structure and clean-cut pathways of the rest was just too hard to miss.  Between that and the sounds of work and machinery, the cat faunus’s curiosity was piqued, and Toast started meandering down the tunnel without really waiting for the rest of the group’s opinion or comment.

He’s not being entirely lackadaisical, of course.  He is on a mission and treating it at least somewhat seriously…for him, at least.  He sticks close to the walls, using his acrobatic skill to keep light on his feet and stealthy and focusing on his aura’s natural “danger sense” to sniff out anything dangerous before it bites him in the ass.

Revya opted to deal with walking Ladybug through the cave and suffer in silence towards the back of the group. He would follow their lead.

Dawn made her way deeper down the shaft. With the help of Ladybug's light, she was able to get a good overview of the similar-looking shafts supported by the wooden scaffolding. Already as they entered the mines Dawn had pushed forward to form the top of the group and thus unofficially took the lead through the corridors. She remembered all the individual offshoots and paths they passed and made a mental note as soon as something seemed out of the ordinary.

Her jaguar ears twitched as she heard muffled noises coming from one of the shafts and she looked down the tunnel with her eyebrow slightly raised. It lacked the neatly crafted walls and the supporting wooden scaffolding that the other tunnels had. Truth be told, it awoke her interest and she was ready to investigate the noises more closely, but in the same thought, she knew of the problems that could be involved. She turned to the group. The last thing she wanted was for the group to split up or having a conflict about which way to go.

"I think we should go to Falco-Hm?" Dawn stopped and silently watched the Cat Faunus as he ran past her and down the tunnel. So much to that. She turned to the group again, "We should stay together, let's go after him." She said as she started to walk down the tunnel, but before she got too far ahead, she looked over her shoulder back to see if the others would follow her or not.

Even though she was bringing up the rear and not in a position to decide anything, Camelia couldn't help but let out an exasperated sigh at her teammates' behaviors. Not only did Toast instantly bifurcate from the main path without even glancing over his shoulder or waiting for anyone, everyone decided to follow suit. Come on, was it so hard to send a duo up the elevator to get some backup?

...Actually, wait, Camelia might be able to go up the elevator without activating it... "Actually, I'm gonna go back onto the main path and go up the elevator shaft real quick to let people know what's happening and maybe come back with reinforcements. Somebody ttake care of bringing up the gang's rear!", she said in a hushed tone before falling back as quickly and quietly as she could.

The flickering lights were annoying, but as long as she kept her ears and eyes on a swivel, she'd probably be able to intercept any movement.

As the group split up both parties slowly but steadily made their way along their respective worn, rocky paths. For the larger group including Toast, Revya and Dawn the path did get considerably more difficult, leftover clumps of rock and an uneven fall made it difficult to walk without stumbling. Revya continued shining Ladybug’s headlights down this new tunnel which did much to give the hunters-in-training an idea of where to place their feet but it also had consequences. As distracted as the six miners were the sudden appearance of a bright light shining from the darkness was more than enough to catch their attention. Their singing and mining quickly stopped as they muttered amongst themselves about what to do next.

’What’s this, didn’t hear the elevator.’

’S’Told this was a bad idea.’

’One more of your quick rich schemes going to get us all beaten up or worse.’

’Days of back-breaking labour for nothing.’

’Screw this, I’m out of here.’

One of the miners tried to back off as far as he could from the advancing light, he couldn’t get far considering they had been making this tunnel as they went but there was still nocks and crannies to hide behind. Sensing their little group buckling, the largest of the miners and probable leader smacked one of her workmates down before they could run away as well and started shouting orders. ’Jayz get in the drill….. Who goes there ….er…. We got our permits an’everything.’ She called out in a harsh voice which reverberated several times through the mining passages. The three other remaining miners seemed to at least be cowered into resistance and took up places along with there leader wielding large pickaxes and trying to look as intimidating as they could. Very large people with plenty of hard muscle folded on top of itself but small nicks could easily be seen the the harsh light of Ladybug clearly showing none had much of an aura defence.

The other group of one, Camelia had a little more of a straight forward time of it. There was still a steady increase in elevation making passage somewhat difficult but nevertheless, the huntress-in-training made her way to the elevator in short order. It was a large machine clearly designed to transport large amounts of people as well as dust and other valuable metals. And it was still in pretty good condition, there had been some wear from the years but it was still clearly in regular use meaning Falconhaven had likely sent the lift down to assist with the Hunters-in-training. As for the elevator carriage itself, it was a large incased metal box clearly reinforced against rockfall and explosions at least from the outside. On the inside, there weren’t any seating areas but roof mounting handholds as well as basic security measures like fire sprinklers, extinguishers, phones and a security camera. If Camelia still wanted to try to float up the mining shafts she could work her way through the insides of the compartment and loosen up enough of the armoured plates to slip through it would still cause some pretty excessive damage to the elevator.

If Camelia would step inside the elevator she would be welcomed over the intercom. ’Greetings Huntress, we have been expecting you for a few days now but later is better than never I suppose although I never understood why I should be content with a miniature one.’ A man’s bored voice seeped through the speakers. ’But where are my manners, My name is Dr Aaraon Cauze... Where are the rest of your team, there is supposed to be four of you right? I hope you don’t expect me to introduce myself to each of you?’ Aaraon’s voice very quickly went from bored to indignant as if he had assumed that Camelia had demanded him to do the same crazy scenario he had just made up.

The tunnel, Toast noted, was much less well-made than the rest of the shaft.  If it weren’t for his heavily honed sense of balance and the bright lights from the motorcycle behind him, he’d have probably been stumbling all over the place.  Wait, bright lights?  Did everyone decide to follow him?  Well that’s awfully flattering, but the lights kinda kill any pretense of stealth--

The singing stopped and the workers started muttering to themselves.  It seemed they noticed the the headlights heading down the tunnel, and they didn’t seem too happy about their presence.  So much for sitting back and observing.

Oh well, sometimes things don’t go according to plan.  The best performers know how to improvise.  When the apparent leader calls out, Toast casually walks forward with his hands on his head and a big smile on his face.  ”Ya know, for someone who has their ‘permits an’ everything’, you guys are awfully jumpy,” he says with a bit of a chuckle, hoping to diffuse some of the tension with a bit of humor.  He remembered Sam saying something about potential “freeholders” and that they could possibly be dangerous, so avoiding a fight’s probably the best bet.

”As for me, I was just passing through when I overheard y’all’s singing.  You know, if this, uh, “get-rich-quick scheme” doesn’t pan out, y’all would make a great barber shop quartet!” he joked, hinting that he wasn’t buying the miners’ “perfectly legitimate business”.  ”In any case, since y’all are law-abiding citizens and all, do you think y’all could help me out with something?”

Dawn rolled her eyes in silence as she heard Camelia move away from the group. What if something happens? On either side? Dawn had little faith that she had any reception down here in the shafts with her scroll, so they were completely shut off from each other. Then there was that they didn't know what to expect further down the shaft, or up in Falcon Heaven. And a split off of 3 and 1 wasn't the best either. Dawn just rolled her eyes again as she accepted the current situation and continued to follow the path deeper into the shafts.

When they finally arrived at the source of the noises, Dawn kept her distance and didn't emerge from the shadows. They noticed them because of the light, but most likely they did not know how many they were. On top of that, since she walked behind Ladybug and not in front, she didn't cast a shadow on which anyone could locate her and anyway, through her dark hair and cloth she was well adapted to the darkness behind Ladybug. Maybe not enough to disappear into the shadows, but she shouldn't be noticed at first glance. She lowered her head and took a step back, narrowing her eyes and her jaguar ears twitch as she focused on the voices. There are six of them, maybe seven if someone was hiding behind the drill. Her hand reached for her belt, which had several cylindrical canisters attached to it, and unloosed one with white contents, placing it in the handle of her still-retracted sword, Dragon's breath. Another canister, this one with a purple-blackish content, found its place in Dawn's left gauntlet. With the sword still retracted in one hand, Dawn raised her other, the one with no dust canister attached, to reveal the shotgun barrel of phoenix flame, aimed at the group of miners. Let's see who decides to move first.

Dust-insert
Dragon's breath: Earth Dust
Left gauntlet: Gravity Dust
Right gauntlet: none

After jogging uphill for a small while, Camelia finally came within sight of what was very obviously an elevator shaft. She was mildly miffed that the elevator wasn't an open basket as she expected, but at least it seemed like there was some sort of communication possible anyway. Even if her interlocutor acted in a somewhat grating way. Leashing in her swelling frustration, she dutifully listened to the man's remarks before hesitating, uncertain of the correct procedure used for communication, then finally turned towards the security camera. Straightening up into a form which almost literally dripped with confidence, she promptly answered Cauze.

"No, sir! The rest of the assigned team is exploring a shoddy-looking offshoot that bifurcated from the main tunnel. I came here to report the situation so far. If you have any questions, I will readily answer them all to the best of my abilities, otherwise I'll head back to provide additional support.""

The leader of the renegade miners gave a cruel, ugly smile. ‘It’s a dangerous land out ‘dere kiddo or did your mamma never tell ya. But now we got work to do and … er wassa the word…. Quotas, yea quotas to fill.’ The miner’s leader yelled out at Toast. Now as their eyes adjusted to the light ladybug continued the stream into the mining shaft the miners looked like they were getting some of their confidence back. Two kids, Dawn was out of their sight, against four miners seemed good odds to them. They weren’t. Still, they advanced buoyed by their leader's words, their number and size advantage and of course to protect their ‘get-rich-quick scheme.’

Some of the miners laughed at Toast’s second joke but even that was dominated in sound and enthusiasm by the leader’s. ‘Yo’know what’s so funny ‘bout dat, old Steevey here does a few sing jobs, funerals mostly. A bit too much like double dipping for me but I never say no to coin, so what’s this thing you want done. Maybe we can help or maybe we can show you all on your way.’ The mining leader continued her taunts and threats clearly not taking well to Toast’s attempt to calm down the situations. ‘Steevey,’ the one who reacted when his name was called, grinned widely and followed his fellow miners, they had gotten pretty close by now and the miner in the drill had managed to turn it around and was following suit, it looked capable of some pretty crazy speed but for now it’s driver seemed content to slowly catch up to their fellows. Not nothing more than violet taunts have been offered yet.

There was a heavy intake of breath from the other side the speaker Camelia and Cauze. The doctor was clearly annoyed about how the Huntsman team he had requested had delayed themselves as well as finding very little of merit from Camelia. ’I have no questions for you girly, you lot are here to assist me in providing a third-party analysis to these horrible accidents nothing more. Go get your teammates a bring them here, if there are rats in the tunnels we will send exterminators in, no need for you to distract yourself further.’ Dr Cauze lazily responded, what little courtesy he offered was at best backhanded and far more likely sarcastic.

Toast stood casually as the miners approached him, seemingly without a care in the world in regard to the taunts and threats levied at him.  It’s not that he’s oblivious to them, the miners' subtlety leaves much to be desired.  It’s just that he’s confident he’s not in any real danger.

That being said, these “law-abiding citizens” are probably too dumb to realize they’re out of their depth, and they look like they’re raring for a fight.  Unfortunately, a fight isn’t going to get Toast or the rest of the group any of the information they need, and would ultimately be a waste of time.  He needs to give these goons a reason to think for a minute before things get violent.

”Oh yeah, my momma told me all about that.  She makes me tell her about everywhere I go, and if I don’t come back when I say I will, she’ll get real mad and come looking for me,” he says to the miners, hoping they get the implication he’s laying down.

When “Steevey’s” side gig gets brought up, Toast kind of smirks and says, ”Oh yeah?  Rumor has it there’s been an increase in demand in your line of work recently.  I heard somebody’s been taking out Faunus, and, well,” he gestures to his tail, ”I’d rather not end up like them.”

”So,” he continues, as he reaches into his pocket, pulls out a lien card, and starts twirling it between his fingers, ”If y’all know anything about what’s been going on, I’m sure Momma will be too happy to ask about what else I’ve been up to.”  The cat faunus trails off, his tail slowly waving from side to side as he lets his offer sink into the minds of the miners.  In the meantime, Toast sizes up the group of them up and starts thinking about what to do if they need a more heavy-handed approach.

If the miners do attack, Toast won’t draw blades.  Instead, he’ll trip up one of the miners and use the point of contact to activate his semblance with wind dust.  When whatever unfortunate fellow breaks the sphere, he’ll hopefully be blasted back into one of his buddies, taking two of them out in one swoop.  Then, using the distraction that will probably cause, he’ll slip behind the other two miners.

That’s the plan at least, but plans have unfortunate survival rate when running into idiocy.

Dawn watched the movements of the miners with narrowed eyes. A warning shot to their feet may be enough to make them shrink back and consider their idea of an attack, but that would also reveal her presence. They didn't seem to have noticed her yet, and the longer she could use that to her advantage the better. Nonetheless, she held up her arm, with Phoenix Flame still aimed at their opponents. First, it was on the group of miners, but then she shifted her focus to the drill and the person inside. She could certainly incapacitate it. Everything would have to be perfectly timed for that though. And what to do after? Who knows how the miners would react to her destroying their machine. With a quick glance to the side, she reassured herself that Dragon's breath was loaded with the right kind of dust. It was risky but possible. She only needs to wait for the right moment. As belligerent as the workers looked, none of them had attacked yet, it would be a mistake for them to make the first move. The four workers were all armed, this shouldn't be a problem for Toast and Revya though. It would surprise her if it was. With this said, she continued to focus on the drill.

Her employer's complete lack of interest and borderline narcissism didn't pass over Cammie's head. Managing to hold back the urge to grind her teeth or tighten her fists, she responded with a stiff yet polite "Yes, sir!" before walking out of the elevator. After having put Orion back in its harness, she legged it back to where she came from, though still alert to any sounds other than her footfalls (which she actively tried to make as quiet as possible despite her speed). Once she came within sight of the shoddy fork in the tunnel, she'd slow down to a mere fast walk until she joined up with her companions.

The miners grimaced at being reminded that any missing persons would inevitably draw the ire from the people living above, particularly children. Their operation relied heavily on slipping under the radar of the mining authorities and few things grab headlines like missing children. ‘Fair ‘nough. Dere ‘ave been a few deaths, accidents they top folk say. Us lower folk gettin’ to where they don’t belong. Saw one of dem not long after she crushed herself, looked like a slaughterhouse, must have rangled herself up real good on the cogs. If dere weren’t her glasses nobody would ‘ave recognised her. Celestine or that was her stage name anyhow, used to run with the … was it called… Hipp-drone-e...Hippodrome, yea that’s it. The Prestigious Hippodrome, big circus yonks back they were good fun when I was a runt, don’t know why an I don’t really care.’ The leader answered before gesturing Toast, Revya, and unbeknownst to them Dawn and Camelia to leave. ‘You place dat card down on a rock and we will all get it once we are done here, not a word about dis when you lot get upstairs. Dere ain’t many travellers to Falcon Haven this time of year and fewer still from the tunnels, we’ll be able to find ya and take what we would have gotten here out of your hides.’ The miner's leader shouted her latest, and unless anyone had anything to add, last threat to the party.

By now Camelia would have made her way back to Dawn, Toast and Reyva and she was just in time to see the miners turn around and head back to work. They still spared the group of Hunters and Huntresses in training glances while they worked, only the leader seemed to fully turn her attention back to the task at hand and even in her head, she was still worried about what could happen once Falcon Haven found out about her little operation. She could carry through with her threats, or at least try to but vengeance doesn’t pay bills and she wouldn’t keep her boys loyalty if they didn’t think she could bring in money.

Toast smirked at the souring expressions of the miners after mention of his “momma”.  Well, he already knew that they didn’t want anyone snooping around their business, so their reactions were to be expected.  Still, there was an odd bit of satisfaction in seeing the thugs go from outright bullying to shrinking violets with the use of a few choice words.

What wasn’t satisfying, however, was the story of Celestine.  For the first time since he landed in Falcon Haven, Toast’s smile fell.  It wasn’t the fact she was a faunus nor the grueling imagery the miner used to describe her death that pissed him off, though.  She was circus folk, like him.  And if this “Hippodrome” was anything like his father’s circus, then they’re only purpose was to make people happy.  And targeting people like that could only be described as a “dick move”.

However, Toast still had a performance to finish, and his smile fell for only a brief moment before returning. ”Don’t worry, Momma won’t hear anything from me,” he assures the miners as they turn to go back to work.  He takes a brief moment to see if he can pick some of their pockets, but they seem to be a bit too wary.  He resists the urge to click his tongue in annoyance and flips the card onto the designated rock before nonchalantly strolling back to the rest of the group.

”Well, I’d say that went pretty well, wouldn’t you?” he asks as they head back toward the elevator, out of earshot of the miners.

As the group turned to leave Revya was forced to do an awkward 3-point turn in the cave before turning to follow the group. He made sure he was out of earshot before saying "So who exactly should we be reporting them to?"

Dawn slowly lowered her arm at the last statement of the miner's leader. She didn't like the idea of turning back now, but if they want it that way, they should get it that way. As she lowered her arm, her other hand moved to her tight-bag, opened it and pulled out her scroll. They still haven't seemed to notice her yet, so she snapped a couple of photos as she slowly moved backwards to fade more and more into the darkness and away from the scene. Good that she always dims the light of her scroll and mutes it before she goes on a mission. As fast as she got the scroll out and took the pictures, she stowed it away again. Since she just pressed the snap button and didn't really care about the focus and quality of the images, there were some useless or too dark ones, but they might still help. But to know that for sure she'd have to take a look at the pictures later.

When Dawn turned to the rest of the group, her eyes fell on Camelia. So she came back after all. Dawn gave her a short shrug as she walked past her and caught up with the rest of the group. "Let's wait until we're up before we discuss anything."

Cammie arrived just in time to see her companions, err, packing up in a way. She patiently waited for the fledgling conflict to completely de-escalate, then followed her companions back the way they came.

As soon as she couldn't hear the drill rig anymore, Camelia spoke up in a hushed tone. "No can do, Dawn. I went to the elevator and was able to contact our employer, told him about the offshoot. He basically told me off and that that's not why we were here, that they'd send guys in due time. So unless you want to deal with him, stick to, and I quote, 'assisting him in providing a third-party analysis to these horrible accidents, nothing more.'" She wasn't exactly angry when she spoke about it, but a keen ear would've spotted the displeasure.

With there altercation with the not-quite-miners dealt with and nothing left to do on the lower levels of the mine the Hunters and Huntresses in training quickly met up and made their way to the elevator. Upon entering the elevator it would automatically start and take the party of four up to Falconhaven. It was a smooth ride, particularly considering the speed they were all moving at but the town above was still a fair bit off and it took a couple of minutes to reach. When the elevator stopped the doors didn't immediately open and the voice which Camelia recognised as Doctor Cauze filled the room. 'Finally you are all here. Welcome to Falconhaven I'm sure your stay will be a short one but do feel free to explore the many different sights before concluding that all these accidents are just that, accidents. Whatever the council might say I can not afford to lower our dust production for your visit so you will liaison with my security teams, one should be outside waiting for you. They will help you get the lay of the land and keep on track.' Doctor Cauze reported quickly before cutting off communications entirely. A few moments later the doors opened.

Falconhaven was a rather beautiful town, effectively fully enclosed the townspeople had clearly gone to great lengths to beautify their home. The ceiling of the cave was painting extensively to show a beautiful sunset full of reds, oranges, yellows and purples and the clouds 'filter' the light from the fading sun which on top of looking nice provided light for the entire cavern. If studied for any length of time it would become clear that the sky painting was slowly changing, darkening to mirror the light outside. There was also obviously no natural greenery but that as well was tackled with paintings as support pillars were painting like trees with even some small animals running all throughout. The houses and other buildings mirrored this look with vines and roses painted over the otherwise very English countryside looking fair. The people, on the other hand, didn't look as colourful, suspicion was clearly rife in the air as people hurried from on their daily commute.

As Doctor Cauze had said there was a squad of three security officers waiting for the Hunters and Huntresses in training to arrive which stood out quite starkly in their dark green uniforms. The citizens did seem to relax a little around the security officers and they shared a few greetings before they caught sight of the party and from then on all greetings where ignored. 'Hello Hunters and Huntresses, my name is Eloise Daily ... Lieutenant Eloise Daily and these are Corporal Davidson and Sargeant Mathews, we have been asked to help in any way we can.' Lieutenant Daily spoke in a friendly and casual manner as she walked a bit forward and waved. Daily was a rather stocky looking brown woman whose black hair was all tied up neatly under her hat. Davidson and Mathews were both rather large white men and their followed their commander's sted and inclined their heads in greeting. It is getting late so it is worth thinking about where you want to stay the night but if you would like to visit any of the sites or review any of the information we can start now if you prefer.' Lieutenant Daily offered.

"Report them?  Why?" Toast asks Revya as he saunters out of the off-shoot.  "Didn't you hear them?  They had their 'permits an' everything', not to mention they helped us out."  It's clear from his tone that Toast didn't think those miners were legit, but he doesn't see any reason to report them to the authorities.  After all, betraying info-sources is bad for business.

Meeting back up with Camelia, Toast gives a quick wave before putting his hands back on his head and continuing his stroll through the cave.  Listening to her findings, he grins and responds sarcastically, "Oh, he sounds delightful, can't wait to meet him!"  He picks up on the use of the word "accidents", but doesn't say anything.  Thinking back, the miners said Celestine's death was an accident, too, or at least that's what they were told.  But the impression he got from Sam was that these weren't just accidents.  If they were, they probably wouldn't hire a third party to investigate, right?  Toast's instincts were telling him there was more here than meets the eye...

That being said, speculating in a cave isn't going to get him anywhere, and thus he continues on towards the elevator, never breaking his stride.  Once the entire group was inside, the elevator started its long journey up to the town.  Toast would make a passing comment about the lack of elevator music and would attempt to make small talk with the group during the ride.

When they finally stop moving, the doors don't immediately open, which causes Toast to tilt his head in a bit of confusion.  However, the speakers soon came to life and projected the voice of what had to be the group's employer.  Unfortunately, he cut off communications before Toast could ask for his name.  So much for first impressions.  "He needs to get laid," he comments as he steps out of the elevator.

Falconhaven itself was a bizarre sight to Toast, to say the least.  He wasn't expecting a town to be entirely within a cave, so all the sights catch him off-guard.  He lets out a low whistle as he watches the artwork in the ceiling and takes some time to admire the painted support pillars.  It's a very pretty town.  It makes the contrast with the people all the more stark, as the inhabitants hurriedly go about their day avoiding eye-contact and keeping to themselves.  Accidents, my ass, Toast thinks to himself as he observes the townspeople.

Unfortunately, there's no time for sightseeing, and he's brought back to business by the greeting of the officers.  "Hiya, I'm Toast!" he greets the lieutenant, shaking her hand, before continuing, "Well, I guess the first thing to ask is if you can catch us up on the investigation so far.  Ya know, names, times and places of death, all that jazz.  The sooner we get started, the better, in my opinion."

"You're kidding right. They threatened us and are clearly breaking the law." Was all Revya said in response to Toast and then continued on in silence as they reached the town. He followed what was said and looked in wonder at the beautiful city.

"He's not the only one who can inform a supervisor about it," Dawn said in a monotonous voice as she headed toward the elevator with the rest of the group. Whether her employer tells someone about the offshoot or not, it wouldn't stop her from telling someone about it herself. She would write to somebody when they have some free time later. If they have free time. What this person then does with this information was left to the individual himself.

The rest of the way, as well as during the whole the elevator ride, she remained silent. She just stared at her scroll and deleted the blurry pictures she had made. Falcon Haven was a beautiful town, not exactly what she expected, but nevertheless a beautiful sight. At first set at the paintings on ceiling and pillars, she soon turned her gaze to the inhabitants of Falcon Haven. The gloomy atmosphere surrounding them made one heavily doubt the words of their employer. Not that she really believed in the fact that these were just 'accidents' in the first place, especially considering the information given to them by Sam Copper.

She greeted Eloise and the two Corporals with a handshake, "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Lieutenant. My name is Dawn Mae."

After am uneventful walk back, Camelia walked into the elevator, putting Orion onto her back. There was no need to come out into the town ready for combat, all it'd do  On the way up, she definitely came to find Cauze suspicious. Whether it was incompetence, arrogance or culpability, he was far too dismissive for a person in charge. Otherwise the ride was blissfully uneventful, some small talk being the only thing to pass the surprisingly long time. Of note, Camelia raising some very unimpressed eyebrows at Toast's laying comment.

Upon arriving in Falcon Haven proper, she was greeted by a sight that was simultaneously rather exotic as well as familiar. After all, you don't see neat little cottages surrounded by wildlife this often underground, not to mention what seemed to be a massive screen spanning the cavern's entire roof. It all heavily contrasted with the people's mildly dreadful moods, though, almost as if they were waiting for death to come knocking in the form of a neighbour or something.

Despite all this, Camelia manifested a bright, open smile when the security team introduced themselves, gladly shaking the three members' hands. She added to Toast's list of enquiries "Oh and your personal opinions as well, of course. You have far more experience around here than we do."

The police officers gladly took everyone but Revya's hand. 'It might be best to discuss specifics with some degree of privacy. Even if these killings aren't... officially considered murders it is still bad form for the police to talk about ongoing investigations in public. You four are being given rooms in a local inn for the duration of your stay so we might as well kill two birds with one stone  and get you four set up there.' Lieutenant Daily responded the glances between her and her subordinates showed that the three weren't all in agreement if the killings should be considered murders or not. With that, the police officers quickly lead the four hunters-in-training away to the Bluebird Inn, a medium sized inn with it's name and namesake was carved over the door and was served by an array of colourful and not-so-colourful characters. As they came to the inn itself they saw an old man emptying a bag of rubbish into the larger bins to the side of the building. Three of his limbs had been replaced with mechanical implants, not the sleek atlas tech the students might be familiar with these arms looked more at home on an industrial lifter than a person. Regardless the old man seemed friendly enough waving his one human hand at the officers and they are responded in kind.

Inside the inn, there was a big man behind the counter, assumably the bartender, and four girls, assumably servers, were going around from table to table collecting or providing food as well as cleaning up vacant tables. Most of the girls were rather attractive young girls, probably teenagers earning a little extra money between school. The last was a little older and although she hid it rather well by positioning her face and taking the long way around the tables had some serious scars on her face. The scarred serving girl ducked out of the main room as the police and Hunters-in-training entered the room and another serving girl gestured for them to take up a large table in the corner of the room. It wasn't the most private setting in the world but as long as no one spoke too loudly and no one was listening too closely there shouldn't be any problems with being overheard.

'Well as I'm sure you all have gathered this is the Bluebird Inn and it's where you will be staying for the three days Cauze has given you the 'investigate' these killings.' Lieutenant Daily began, the verbal quotation marks made it clear that regardless of the parties intentions she did not trust that they would be able to carry out an acceptable investigation in the time frame given.
'As for the specifics of the victims there names are Xanadu and Gamboge Symbol and Celestine Black. All three died in various mining facilities, the siblings died together in a processing plant on the other side of town and Black died in a storage facility. Times of death is hard to establish due to the state of the bodies and our enclosed environment but rough estimations but Black as three weeks ago and the siblings a week although it took a while to find them so as I said that might be inaccurate. As for my personal opinion... Lieutenant Daily explained looking at Toast before quickly flicking her eyes to Camelia and opened her mouth to respond only to be interrupted by Sargeant Mathews. ' There are too many suspicious factors to completely dismiss these deaths as accidents regardless of how helpful that would be for the higher-ups.' Sargeant Mathews interrupts, Lieutenant Daily glares and her subordinate and he holds her gaze but she says nothing to contradict his statements.

"Oh, good, I don't have to pay for a room!  You think we'll get free food, too, while we're at it?" Toast jokes at the mention of the inn before putting his hands on his head and casually following behind the officers.  For someone who's been brought on to investigate potential murders, the cat faunus seems largely unperturbed about the whole situation.  Even as the group is brought into the Bluebird Inn, Toast seems more interested in the girls working there than the situation at hand, as he tosses flirtatious winks their way.

As the group sits down, the first thing Toast does is plop his feet on the table and stretch out, apparently having no issue making himself at home in the establishment.  It's only when Daily mentions a time limit that he pipes up.  "Hold up, 'three days'?  This is the first I've heard anything about that!  That's barely enough time for a guided tour!" he says, looking to the officers for an explanation.  As Daily goes on, Toast's face grows more and more annoyed, until he finally puts his feet down when she gives her estimate of the time of death.

"THREE WEEKS?!" he shouts at the lieutenant incredulously, slamming his hands on the table, almost certainly disturbing the rest of the inn.  He then quickly recovers, dragging his hand slowly over his face as he takes a deep breath.  "Okay, remind me again of when you found the bodies?  Also, any chance anyone filed a 'missing persons' report before they were found?  Might help to know where they were last seen," he asks in a much calmer tone, though there's a hint of dejection in there.  Under his breath, he mutters to himself inaudibly.  When Daily's subordinate speaks up, Toast looks at him expectantly.  "Well?  Don't let us stop you," he says, urging the sergeant to continue.

Dawn had her hands folded in front of her and let her head rest on them as she listened to the lieutenant's words and repeated the information for herself in her head. So they had three days to figure out the meaning behind the murders and try to stop them. No time to mess around then, not that she had planned it.
"Can you give us a bit more information about how the victims were killed? Is there may be a pattern?" She asked after Mathew ended. There were many ways to kill another person, and every piece of information was crucial, "And you mentioned the state of the bodies. How bad is it exactly?"

Camelia quickly agreed and followed suit the police officers. Saying that the street was an inappropriate place for discussing matters of life and death, be they past or future, was an understatement. As they crossed the town, though, she deemed it better to keep herself reserved; it would probably lessen the negative impact she'd have on the citizens (seeing heir anguished faces) if she demonstrated that she was with the police and under them, even if it may not be true. As such, she merely looked and smiled at the old, mechanically-augmented man who joyfully waved at the trio instead of waving back.

Upon arriving at the inn, she quickly took in the interior environment. The attractive servers caught her eye, like they apparently did to Toast too, but it seemed pretty normal to her for an inn. Apart from the eldest one dodging out of the reception as the students arrived. Why did she do that?

Regardless, she followed her now-mentors and sat down at the table assigned to them by one of the servers, mouthing a smiling 'thank you' at the young lady - who, come to think of it, was probably around her age. She then proceeded to keenly listen to her seniors as they exposed the current situation, frowning at the news regarding the time limit. She never had the time to comment on it, though, as Toast yelled loud enough for the whole street to know the what's what of everything, prompting Camelia to lean her elbows on the table and rub her eyes with her hands. Good. So, so good.

Letting her teammates ask more questions while she recuperated, she appended "Would you perhaps also have documents regarding the crime scenes? Pictures, reports, things like that?"

The lieutenant glared daggers at Toast after the latter's outburst, luckily most of the people inside the inn had either left or were too busy with their work to notice. Although those with a refined aural sense might be able to detect a distinct shift as if something that they had gotten used to was missing. 'Meals are provided by the inn yes.' Lieutenant Daily began, starting with the easiest question first and speaking slowly in an effort to minimise the chance of Toast having another outburst. Shuffling through his pack Corporal Davidson drew out a folder full of pages which he handed to his lieutenant. Daily gave a quick look through the documents before passing the folder over. 'I would warn you the pictures are rather graphic. All three weren't exactly the type to hold down long term employment, they would take off jobs here and there and often leave Falconhaven for months at a time so no there was no missing person report for any of the cases. The official story is that all three have had unrelated accidents with heavy machinery, it's the only reasonable explanation for the damage to the bodies outside of a large Grimm and if there was a large Grimm around we would know about it.' Lieutenant Daily continued.

She wasn't kidding when she said that the folder contained graphic images. The victim's bodies looked like they had gone through a wood chipper, with barely a bone unbroken or an organ unruptured. Along with the pictures, there was an autopsy report which consisted mostly of excuses of why the time of death couldn't be accurate: The cave systems don't have the same amount of insects as wider Remnant hadn't found the bodies yet, with no remaining core of the body it was impossible to get an accurate temperature to measure cooling, and because most of the blood was outside the body than inside measuring blood pooling was also meaningless. The only thing they really had was how dried the blood was around the body and particular stress was put on how inaccurate a system that was. There was also pictures of blood splattered heavy machinery equipment, devices designed to hold, heat and twist metal into a more useable shape. Officially they had been classed as the cause of death. There was a small mention of a white power found in all three scenes which were later determined to be flour. On top of that, there was a short summary of the victim's lives, all three had been part of The Prestigious Hippodrome at one point but after the circus fell apart so did their lives, unable to hold down stable work they survived mostly on their strong backs which were failing by now and the charity and goodwill of their fellow ex-carnies. There were also a few short statements made by those around 'accidents' but most where something similar to: 'lots of people come through here,' 'they don't teach them like they used to,' 'I mean sure its sad and all but when can I get my equipment back?' and so on.

Noticing that Lieutenant Daily wasn't going to continue and answer the rest of Toast's questions Sargeant Mathews again spoke up. 'I'm sure you have noticed by now that there isn't any real interest in solving these crimes, it is making a big mess just before an electoral cycle so Curze is doing everything he can to sweep this whole thing under the rug. He wants you to rubber stamp his statements so his campaign isn't so distracted by the unfortunate inconvenience of a series of murders being committed within their mitts. While it's very true that the victims often took odd jobs and the like but working with heavy machinery isn't an 'odd job' and even if it was ... I mean you've seen the photos there is no way a person could do that to themselves.' The Sargeant continued regardless of the increasingly infuriated expressing his fellow police officers were wearing. 'Now he hasn't been stopped I'm sure you have been given a fair deal to chew on and we have our own duties to attend to, so unless you have any more questions we really must be getting off. Night patrols are our busiest times of the day.' Lieutenant Daily finished with an exaggerated sign. She wasn't lying but she clearly wanted the whole situation just to blow over or at least it to stop until their local elections finished.

Toast held the lieutenant's gaze with a miffed expression.  She could glare at him all she wants, he's not the one who let people go missing for weeks at a time only for them to wind up dead.  The lack of any missing persons reports further exasperated him, and the (in his opinion) shoddy excuse does little to alleviate his concerns.  His mood only continues to sour as more and more information is revealed.

The pictures themselves, gruesome as they are, don't really bother him too much.  Growing up wondering the desert, he's seen some shit, up to and including stumbling upon the aftermath of a poor soul falling into a baby Deathstalker nest.  He's become somewhat desensitized to death, and has even made light of others' misfortune in the past ("Looks like he had a good...'trip'.").  This time, though, it's different.  Not only Celestine, but all three victims were former circus performers like him.  Not only that, but Toast has the distinct impression that they were targeted because they were circus performers.  And that made this personal.

Unfortunately, despite Toast's newfound motivation, it seems literally everything was working against the group in this case: any leads the current investigation had are currently dead due to the time since the deaths took place, the political system has ulterior motives to hamper the investigation, and they only have a limited amount of time to turn up any meaningful evidence.  On top of that, Toast has no experience in investigating murders--or investigating period, for that matter.  But there is one thing he can do in this situation, and that's act.

"'Official story', huh?" he begins, a small smile wiping his previous expression away and replacing it with the mask of a seasoned performer.  Looking about the rest of the table, he continues, "I think everyone here knows what's really going on in these photos, otherwise you wouldn't be choosing your words so carefully.  Problem is, you don't have the proof, right?  What if I told you we can prove these aren't accidents just with the evidence here on the table?  Even better, it can be done in less than 5 minutes."

Toast pauses here to let his challenge sink in.  In all actuality, he's bluffing.  He doesn't have any new proof to offer.  But, well, that's not actually what he's trying to do.  "First, let's put aside the overwhelming amount of circumstantial evidence here.  We can discuss their faunus heritage, connection to the Hippodrome, the similar manner of death, and their extended absences from the city in a bit; for right now, let's just look at the hard evidence."  Toast chose his words carefully here, utilizing the age-old tactic of misdirection.  By highlighting the connections of the victims, he's hoping to draw the officers into a particular mindset.  Back when his mother was teaching him magic tricks, she told him that people will always look for a patterns and connections, even in things that are completely unrelated.  It's why people have "lucky shirts" and develop superstitions.  People see something and assume it just can't be a coincidence.  And there's no way these officers can possibly think these deaths are a coincidence.  All Toast has to do is make one more association, and they'll start drawing conclusions of their own.

"Now, before we begin, can anyone tell me the properties of flour?"

Dawn waited until everyone had a good look at the folder and its content and then took the entire folder for herself and leaned back with it in her chair. Slowly she leafed through the pictures, glanced briefly at the mutilated body of the victim, then studied the background and the smaller details. Blood or disturbing images didn't really bother her much. Though not necessarily to that extent, it wasn't the first time she saw a dead body in a rather distorted form. Nevertheless, they left an impression. Either someone had really hated those people, or the culprit had a lot of fun leaving a mess. When she arrived at the end of the folder, she flipped through it again, this time quicker, and put the order back on the table in case anyone else wanted to take another look in it or to return it to the Lieutenant.

At some point between when she took the folder and put it away again, Dawn had taken out a small notepad, including pen, from her bag and began to write or draw something on it. Judging by the movement it could be both, and that's exactly what it was when she copied parts of the afterimage from her memory onto the paper and wrote her throughs as small notes beside it. Maybe it proves to be helpful later. Especially the flour hat a lot of notes next to it. It had been a while, but she'd heard something about flour and yeast sharing certain enzymes with saliva. Amylase. They could be used to cover the tracks at a crime scene. That would explain at least the presence of the white powder. However, she decided to keep her questions about the flour for the time being.

Camelia slowly and carefully looked over the photos as they were flipped through. Grisly was an understatement. Whatever had killed them or shredded the bodies afterwards, had done so violently enough to reduce all three victims to piles of messy, broken bones and shredded soft tissues. A bit more and all that'd be on the pictures was snarge.

The blood on the machinery seemed at odds with the cause - it didn't seem to come from within the machinery, or from a point where moving parts could crush things, but rather from the outside. She wasn't buying the explanation mentioned beforehand - somebody could've done something like this, too. Besides, considering the machines involved, the fact that there were no signs or reports of cremated or burnt tissues, along with how minutely the bodies had been torn apart, pointed to another, unknown cause.

Camelia came back to the discussion when Toast started speaking. His expression seemed to have just changed when she looked at him, but from what, she couldn't tell. Regardless, she listened to him as he pointed out what all three victims had in common. She was, however, utterly dumbfounded when he posed a single question which seemingly defied all common sense.

After a short silence, Camelia tentatively answered with "Uuuh, apart from getting sticky when water's involved, it's extremely flammable when suspended in mid-air?" Truth be told, she was having an extraordinarily hard time keeping up with Toast at the moment.

Revya snapped to reality, realising he had been spaced out for an extended period of time, likely thinking about something with gears in it. He opted to remain silent and try to absorb information through context. whoops.
