Beacon Academy / Re: What the Night Owls See [Closed]
« on: March 11, 2023, 10:18:05 PM »
Prism distantly blinks up at the surprised sight of her teammate, trying to process his sudden appearance. She was the only one still awake, last she checked. "...You know how it goes. Couldn't sleep, tried to be productive instead, ended up wandering the halls." She eventually provides, stepping back to give Lucas access to the vending machine.

It's bit disconcerting to bump into one of her teammates this late at night. After all her hours, just. Laying awake at night, she'd been pretty sure she was the only consistent night owl on the team. At least, the only one who had a good reason to needlessly stay awake at night.

(At least, she hopes she's the only one.)

So where'd Lucas come from?

Right, he's talking to her.

"...Thanks for the warning?" She tries. After he's done, the hummingbird drops in her own change and punches in the code for the row of energy drinks along the top shelf. "I've noticed Cloe uh, tends to get..." She trails off, nose scrunching as she searches for the right words to describe the... pecularities, of their tea. "...grumpy, if she doesn't get her beauty sleep in. Not to mention Varia's stink-eye. I'll join you, it'd be easier than dealing with them in the morning."

Normally, she'd be a little more hesitant to talk badly about her team leader and their resident bad-boy behind their backs, but Lucas lived with them too. If anybody understood, it'd be him.

Somewhere past the thirty-six hour mark was the sweet-spot of sleep deprivation. Her thought pattern would be scattered enough that any memories that bothered to resurface would just drift past like a fading dream; but she still retained enough lucidity to stay focused on the task in front of her. It got pretty hard to focus, and occasionally the world would shift a little bit underneath her boots -- but as long as she kept ingesting caffeine, she'd be fine.

That's why she's memorized the path to her favorite vending machine, the one down the hallway right past her team's room. A hundred and sixty-two steps from the common room, two left turns. Tucked into a tiny nook next to the water fountain. If she hip-checked the machine at the same moment her drink dropped from the top shelf, it'd take out a bag of fritos on the way down.

She's so preoccupied with counting steps and hallucinating the taste of fritos she doesn't notice the quiet click of a bedroom door, the sound of footsteps other than her own on crushed velvet.

Prism walks straight into Lucas, crushing her nose against his chest. It takes her a second to process the collision, but she steps back after a long moment with a rising flush. "...hey, Lucas."

Prism throws an arm over her face as the the clearing detonates in a kingdom-come pillar of fuschia fire. The wave of heat and ash that rolls off is strong enough to make her take a step back, quietly grateful that she left her goggles down. All of those Grimm, cleanly eviscerated in a single attack. Her new team's synergy isn't just astonishing, it's astounding, amazing, some other positively-denoted a-word she doesn't have enough concentration to remember right now. They won. Simply, cleanly, without any messiness or serious aura damage. Just swift exacting communication and execution.

This team had some real hope after all.

As the dust in the clearing finally dies out, the hummingbird pushes back her goggles and approaches the rest of the group with a wide grin. Juno Varia, Lucas Meridiem, and Cloe Z... They were going to have an interesting time coming up with an acronym off all of that.

"It's nice to meet you all. I'm Prism." She offers simply, giving a little wave. "Cloe's right, that went really well for a spontaneous plan of attack. Kind of reassuring, since it looks like we'll be working together from here on out."

The group's immediate synergy is honestly astonishing.

Juno broke the deadly line of fangs and claws, threw himself into the middle of the situation, and -- well, planning something that'll handle the miasmatic mass. The stringbean's an unexpected beast with that lantern, setting everything up perfectly for the blonde's one-woman crowd control knockdown campaign. The pack's bottled in. Everybody has their place, their role. It's all set up perfectly.

That means it’s her job to follow through.

The hummingbird pulls a fragile vial of glittering dust from her thigh, whipping it down before the hummingbird leaps from the tree. Oversized wings burst through the back of her jacke, beating at the air as she plumments. The glass vial shatters under her heel at impact.

The wind screeches to life in response.

It catches the ice dust and sweeps it up like a stream, sending it crashing like a cold wave over the clearing. A fragmented gust follows, whipping hair and rustling cloaks — whipping away remaining particles surrounding her new teammates. Mist-like steam begins to rise from her crouched form.

Prism takes another breath.

Her wings flare to their full span in one swift snap as twin crescents of white light rip from her wings. The crescents cut through the air, crossing as a brief, bright X — before they impact the glittering cloud. Her aura is the ignition point, and the clearing alights. Every remaining Beowolf is flash-frozen where they stand, coated in a thin sheet of ice, barely an inch thick but just enough to keep them stuck where they stand.

“All yours, Juno!”

"Prism."

She barely gets the words out before shit goes sideways up ahead -- the the mystery flare moves high into the air. The hummingbird can see the beacon pulse, a bright white with a tinge of... green? The screech of Grimm reverberates through the trees, and the hummingbird's on her feet and following her new partner into the fray before the sound clears treetops.

She's moving from branch to branch at this point, shifting and swinging until she settles onto a steady limb at the edge of the clearing. She pulls Hawkseye tight to her shoulder, stares down the scope, and...

"Mark!"

The first bullet embeds itself in the first of the trio Juno's targeting, cleanly eviscerating the Beowolf's skull before Juno's sword tangles its intestines. This is the first time that Prism's managed to get a good look at their supposed rescuees. The initiator their scrum is a blonde dog faunus with a robotic-looking limbs and a baseball bat in one hand, the other extended for a perfectly-timed fist bump opportunity. The other is a nervous-looking stringbean of a boy, with a sniper rifle and a pea-green semblance that vaguely matches the ghostly lantern floating above the clearing. The mystery light must be her semblance.

...And this is her new team. A bimbo, her douchebag, and a stringbean. "Cover fire incoming!" The next two years will be interesting.

Three more shots ring out in short order. One buries itself in the eyeball of the Beowolf nearest the new duo, forcing a clean disintegration. The other hit head-and-shoulders of two more approaching, forcing them to stagger and buying precious time for the three on the ground. "Name's Prism, that's Juno! Reloading!"

Asshole and emergency landing aside, there's no time dawdle. The first thing that Prism does is clamber to the top of the leafy canopy. The sooner she gets a handle on her bearings, the better.

There's a break in the trees in the far distance -- a small clearing. Along the far side she can see, a strange spectral light is flitting among the trunks... Right up until it disappears like a light in a storm. The hummingbird can see a small humanoid figure jog into the clearing after it, only to turn on her heel as a pervasive red light starts to surround her.

One pair of burning red eyes.

Than another.

Than another.

Than another.

Grimm.

Animalistic heckling slinks through the air from the direction of the clearing, spiking a chill into her spine. The hummingbird barely manages to keep from shivering. Somebody's about to face down a hoard, all by themselves.

...And in the lower corner of her vision, maybe fifty yards away, is a semi-familiar douchebag in white leather and a cheap hat.

Who's in-between her and the clearing.

He wouldn't have been her first choice as a teammate, but she can't in good conscious just let him wander into a fight.

Prism ducks her head back beneath the canopy, clambering back down to where all the branches intermesh. With a bit of careful maneuvering, she leaps from one treetop to the next -- doing her best to minimize the sound of her careful hops and swings among the branches. If she's careful, she'll be able to set up an angle and take one or two down before they get a good handle on her location.

When she's well-within hearing range of the asshole who knocked her out of the air, the hummingbird drops down to a lower branch, maybe fifteen feet above his head. She squats down and peers over the edge, briefly whistling to catch his attention. "Hey, douchebag."

"A good dozen beowolves in the clearing up ahead -- maybe more, it was hard to see over the trees. Some poor chump's trying out a solo act. I think we should go help."

Prism's ready for this. She had to be.

Months spent preparing for this very moment. Training her body, mind, and soul. Learning how to maneuver around a glaive that intially felt too big for her svelte body; a rifle with a kickback that left bruises on her shoulders for weeks. Hundreds of hours spent throwing herself against the air, learning how to channel a semblance that felt so esoteric it was learning to speak a forgotten language. But it listened to her now. She could channel it with a shift of her shoulders and a simple drawing thought.

She was ready for this.

She definitely lucked out in terms of the placement. A little over halfway through the line of launching students. It lets her watch, a careful eye tracking each target . Some are owning it, soaring and even detonating their kinetic dust stores to throw themselves even further. Some are... flailing their way through it, and they'll probably take a knock to their aura before landing. Watching them fight against

It gives her time to prepare as the launch pad starts quivering beneath her heels. She drops her weight back, tucks her limbs in, and drags her goggles down over her eyes.

She's definitely ready for this bit.

The air's her domain, after all.

The launch pad goes off like a gunshot, slugging a pit of adrenaline into her gut as she's thrown into the air. Endless acres of ancient forest swallow everything up to the horizon line, dotted in rocky outcropping and rare natural clearings. It's a good launch angle too: high and clear, the wind whistling in her ear and her bomber jacket billowing out behind her.

Positioned like this- legs drawn up, arms outstretched -- she can ride the momentum of the launch into an outright glide. In fact, at the height of her arc like this, her wings slowly start to slip out-

"ON YOUR RIGHT!"

A pink and white fireball of douchebaggery breaks through her periphreal vision before blasting past her right. Whoever that asshole is doesn't hit her, but-

The backdraft from his dust blast hits like a truck, throwing her into a wild spin with a screech she barely manages to repress. She barrels through the sky like a misfired bullet, the world reduced to a blue-green smear, and her vision is rapidly getting eclipsed by the latter. The bones of her wings beat against her bomber jacket and her feathers ruffle uselessly but the fabric traps them against her back, she won't be able to catch the air like this, she's not flying she's falling she's going to fall-

In the last seconds before her probable end, it's like the hunter said. Adaption saves her. The trick landing, the useless trick landing she felt guilty spending time learning when she should've been rehearsing glaive drills-

Instinct drives her right hand to the oversized bolt handle at the top of Hawkseye, whipping it around her body as the white metal shifts and extend into an oversized glaive. Her arm comes in tight and her other hand finds the hidden trigger, and in the single second blue is up and green is down, she fires.. Blunt momentum counteracts her wild spinning and throws her onto her back. She still can't get her wings out -- the burlap of her bomber jacket is blown flat against her back -- but she knows which way is up and down now, and now-

The wind listens to her wild hand gesture with an abrupt gust, streaming against her back and slowing her rapid fall. The airstream tightens as she narrows the tree tops. She leans into the fall and abruptly pitches forwards. There's one final gust, nearly pushing her up, and-

She promptly falls ten feet through the treeline, abruptly landing at the crux of an oversized branch.

...She's alive.

She's battered, her hair is more of a windswept mess than usual, she has no idea where she landed.

But she's alive.

Prism breathes a sigh of relief as the annoyance starts to set in. That wasn't quite the smooth landing she intended. "...Asshole."

I'll sign up Prism. She's going through some heavy revisions right now, but she'll be ready by the time things actually launch.

Right, hello and welcome to RWBYrpg! It's always nice to see new people on the board. It looks like you've got a pretty clear idea of who you want your character to be, but she's going to need to be refined before she can be approved.

Firstly, pop over here and take a look at the character template. You're gonna want to copy that and use it as the basis for your profile. Please, really do that. It's part of the character submission requirements.

Secondarily, two quick pieces of advice for Chara:

- If you want her to be a student, she's gonna need to have some degree of combat capability if she's going to get into any of the hunter's academies. If you want her to be a civilian, then a lack of combat training is expected - but the hunter's academies is where most of the roleplay action is.

- You're going to want to flesh out her profile a little more as well. Don't be afraid to go into detail! We like detail here, and length really isn't an issue.

Also, are you referencing Undertale?

Right, I left this up for a week in case anybody else wanted to sign up, but it looks like everyone who's interested is already interested.

Party participants have been edited into the original post. I'll reach out to y'all on discord soon, and throw up a starter post sometime in a few days. Keep an eye out!

All your edits look good! I appreciate the attention to detail and elaboration in his story. The added detail on his weaponry and the ability to split it into two seems pretty neat. I've got two more notes 'bout your character and then you'll have my +1.

Combat Behavior: I just want to bring your attention to a portion of the character creation rules in theappearance section that limits the flight capabilities of OCs with wings - gliding's just fine, but prolonged flying is impossible due to the sheer weight of the human body. There's a few ways around that though (flying character of my own), and that's usually through the use of his semblance and Dust. If you throw in a sentence about using the updrafts from his pyrokinesis (I think you've mentioned this) and wind dust use to stay aloft, that's good enough for me.

High agility is fine, especially if he's been training so long and is technically something of a prodigy. But he's still a big boiTM who puts a lot of power into his swings, and a first-year hunter student. If his increased agility and speed basically come from... high-focused technique and adrenaline and it isn't constant, then we're good.

Thanks for your patience with everything, especially all the edits.

ATTENTION YOUNG HUNTERS AND HUNTRESSES!

Are you brave, strong, and seeking adventure? Do you wish to prove yourself as the prodigal hunter of you generation? Or are you simply exceedingly poor?

Then I may have the MISSION. FOR. YOU!

Recently, one of the rarest and most elusive Grimm on record - the elusive AMALTHEA - has been spotted on the outer edges of the former settlement, Mountain Glenn. This particular is notable for the particular specimen embedded in its back - an ANCIENT, IMPORTANT, and EXTREMELY COLLECTIBLE sword! I desire this piece for my PRIVATE collection, and will pay handsomely FOR ITS RETRIEVAL! I don't care about your age, skill level as long as the sword is in PRISTINE CONDITION!

I'm seeking a team of approximately three students, perhaps with a professional hunter escort, in order to retrieve the sword. If you care to apply for the job, simply reach out to me at 555-555-5555. The monetary reward will be approximately 100,00 lien per student.

I look forwards to hearing from interested individuals soon!

Sincerely Yours,
Mr. Mallard.

"...Right, with that out of the way, here's what we're dealing with: an Amalthea actually has been spotted on the outskirts of Mountain Glenn. For those of you unaware of the Grimm's reputation, it's a harbringer. Whenever one of those shows up somewhere, some sort of natural disaster will usually hit the area within seventy-two hours of it's initial sighting."

"Assistant Headmistress Printempts wants eyes on the ground, tracking it down and maybe taking care of it, best-case scenario. We see an Amalthea approximately twice a decade, and never in the same place. If you want a chance at making history, then I suggest accepting this invite ASAP. If you're signing up, pack enough for a few weeks of wilderness survival. We don't know how long we'll be out there."

"The monetary reward for that sword or whatever is just a nice bonus. Stupid student debt..."

Welcome to the plot signups for Historical Hearsay, a PC v. Grimm thread, aimed around tracking and (eventually) hunting down a new grimm of original design known as the Amalthea, soon coming to a Grimm catalogue near you. The thread will be written choose-your-own-adventure-kinda style with the stipulation there's a full chance that will change, depending on how the thread progresses. The theme is mystery, and your OC will be tracking the Amalthea through dangerous, generally-uncharted wilderness.

Moreso than anything, this is a thread that I want to be a story for interested participants. There's an equal chance you'll succeed or fail the mission, though I'll do my best to nudge you towards the former - and you may end up a happy medium. However, it's also dangerous. The Amalthea is a mysterious grimm by in-universe standards, with much of the information surrounding it based around rumor and legend.

Basically, you're going to be facing some unique stuff.

I'll be reaching out to those who sign up to ask about something you want to accomplish in this thread for your character (within reason, you're not going to get an auto-win), whether it's a emotional realization or simply something that'll let them get a cool scar. You'll be welcome to change this at any given time, as well.

I'm opening up slots for three poeple, because that feels like a good number to hope for given the current activity levels of the board. If more are interested, I'll open it up to four. Characters will be chaperoned by Malina Nahualli-Roth, who's been generously loaned to me by Dr. Gustave because I didn't feel like creating an entire staff character.

Slots are listed below, and they'll be updated accordingly. Please tell me the name of the character you want to enter, and link their profile:
1. Diana Farran
2. Lucas Meridiem
3. Isabella Aozora

If you've got any questions, feel free to DM me here or on the Discord. Preferably the Discord, I'm way more responsive there. Before you sign up, it's appreciated if you know you'll be able to post consistently, though I'm not in a rush to write this.

Overall, thanks for reading, and happy hunting!

Hunter's ramblings must be growing on her, because Prism finds herself smiling for no particular reason as she crosses the room to the sink. She's an pessimistic optimist on the best of days, striving towards goals she knows she may never truly reach. But with Hunter-

There's something about the professor's energy that near-infectious, putting something resembling a skip in her step and a sway in her sashay as she starts running hot water and reaching for the dishsoap. "Life-threatening, risky, and relatively safe impulses. Cleaning up for the first is difficult. Don't do stuff without at least checking in with your partner about it first, because there's a risk they'll brain you." She parrots back, including her new mentor's unspoken lesson.

...a quiet humming of a tuneless song emanates from the kitchen as she begins to scrub with mechanical efficiency, low enough that she can still pick up anything else he says. "What's next?"
