Menrva Star
« on: February 17, 2020, 08:00:58 AM »
CHARACTER

Name: Menrva Star

Age: 23

Species and Gender: Bird faunus, Female

Symbol: A circuit pattern on a crescent moon

Occupation: Scientist and Surgeon

Appearance: Menrva is seemingly of average height, being around 5’5”. She stands out with her bangs on either side of her face that fade from grey to electric blue, with the braid maintaining that same gray as it reaches the bottom of her shoulder blades. Menrva's eyes upon close examination are actually mechanical with a lot of dulled circuitry patterns running through them with electric blue. Menrva's facial features would consider her to be ‘pretty’ from both afar and up close but this can be somewhat dulled by her lack of visual expressions which gives off an air of disinterest with everything that happens around her, giving her the appearance of a heartless individual.

Due to an attack that ended with a useless body, Menrva agreed to undergo surgery to give herself cyberware that would allow her to function as a regular human again, this left her with completely cybernetic arms, legs, spine heart and lungs, with some plating (mainly at the sides of her neck, around the shoulder and shoulder blades) on the body and a faint electric blue glow that is located below Menrva's collar bone, this houses her main power source that allow her cybernetics to function. Most of Menrva’s cybernetics have been painted to be a gray with dark sections and white for anything else. Noticeable glows coming from just inside the shoulder where the cybernetic meets flesh, centre of the shoulder armour, joints, palm and back of her hands. It is the same story for her legs with the same familiar glow coming from the bottom of her feet. With clothes on she looks almost identical to a regular human appearance since she has carefully updated her limbs to give off that appearance when covered.

Around her chest piece is heat scarring that resembles circuitry which occured during an experimental upgrade that went wrong. She could've got them removed but kept them as a reminder to be more careful.

Casual outfit: Standby
Menrva can be seen most days (off-duty) in a white long sleeve shirt turtleneck, over this is a black breastless vest that has a triangular glow above where her power source sits, with straps on the left side which keep the vest in place. Coming from under the vest are high-waisted pants that Menrva wears which goes all the way down to her ankles with regular ankle high heeled boots or black knee high boots.

Atlas uniform: Activated (on right, previous link broke and Menrva is always with Solaris)
Image: ShowHide

Menrva’s official uniform on duties takes the form of a black collar shirt with a bright red tie and a silver tip clip with a long coat in white, a high collar that is folded and grey shoulder marks with a red circle on the outer sides. The folds of the coat, cuffs and lining are in a grey-blue and this ends just after it opens up to reveal the navel, continuing when it reaches Menrva’s belts until it ends at her knees. Two belts support Menrva pristine white pants that are either tucked or covering Menrva’s black boots with glowing highlights in her cyan colour. With glowing rings at the and ankles and a solid glow over the knee.

History: Menrva is the second child of Ra and Isabella Star, citizens of Atlas and a human / faunus couple, a rarity within Atlas but more so common within Mantle. Being the second child, Ra and Isabella thought that they would have all the necessary experience, because despite being young, Solaris proved to be several children packed into one, a compressed being of frustration and patience for the two parents. However, this was promptly changed when Menrva had been born with wings, almost no one knew that Isabella was a faunus and announcing Menrva as a faunus was a sure-fire way to get rumours about them and outcast, they didn’t care about the status but Isabella had built up a large successful business with Mantle for faunus and faunus supporters and contacts in Atlas helped her get some behind-the-scenes information to ensure that she could keep faunus safe.

This fact plus the target that a young faunus within Atlas caused irrational fear within Isabella, and a small part of this extended to Ra as well. Isabella had quickly decided that they would just need to keep Menrva hidden, keep her in the house, hide her if people came and not show any evidence of her existence to those they couldn’t trust. Luckily this was made easier since Menrva had an almost saintly softness and possessed close to zero of the thrill-seeking, stress inducing aspects that Solaris had in spades. Instead, Menrva enjoyed books and always enjoyed reading as soon as she could, who would happily go to her room with a book when she was told to do.

This also showed Menrva early smarts that bloomed, already understanding 5th grade maths, English and science before she was meant to be in kindergarten. Seemingly accelerated learning from being home-schooled, she was able to study what she wanted and always got whatever books she asked for. Developing a thirst for knowledge; she showed early signs of interest in medicine,  and medical based cybernetics. Which led to Ra buying and bringing home parts which Menrva played with when she wasn't reading.

This kept up until Menrva was 12, her smarts had passed a point where they could keep her in the house and she was old enough to attend Atlas, plus Solaris was 17 and had already built herself a fearsome reputation amongst her year as a force of nature, bringing comfort to the idea of Menrva being outside of the house and away from the safety of home. However, Menrva had no official qualifications or any recorded education, this had to be corrected so a test had to be done in order to evaluate her skills. She was applied to a specialised program and the test was conducted, which she aced, curious, they gave another and another perfect score, they kept on rising the difficulty and she went through 7 more tests before she achieved a 'high' and that was the end of the tests.

Menrva didn't know the results and despite her complete confidence in her answers, she was scared to high hell about not being accepted and was relieved when the letter said she was accepted into the course. Needless to say they celebrated and also brought up Menrva's admittedly poor social skills in the time they had before her first day of school. Sol took care of most of that by taking it upon herself to show Menrva where to go and stayed a little bit for Menrva to greet herself, not to mention subtly threatening all of the students since she had her weapons on her person.

From there Menrva began her classes, joint and singular classes; joint consisted of students who had common subjects and singular classes were for Menrva and other two high achievers which was around their individual choice. So Menrva was taught more about medicines and cybernetics, the earlier tests providing the baseline that was needed for her skills. Her technical skills regarding them were top-notch but her practical skills were only basic since they didn't have the right connections for high grade parts without being suspicious and would be problematic, with all that changing she got a large amount of practical experience and developed a proper, Atlas grade cybernetics within her first month. From here her skills and knowledge just kept improving at an astounding rate with her joint classes slowly but surely decreasing in quantity since she read up and learnt the material ahead of time, allowing for more time to focus on her passion and main focus.

Like that Menrva had kept up her studies for 4 years and was already well into the sponsored medical degree that she wanted when she was 14, her continual improvement meant that she met with a prominent Atlas scientist a few times, Dr. Goud and while each meeting wasn't longer than a few hours, she enjoyed seeing him work and helping people which made him an instant inspiration to her since that was what she also wanted to do.

With all this knowledge, Menrva had heard about a convention which discussed new technologies that was to be hosted in Vale for that year, Menrva saw it as a bonus to go since she would get to visit Vale, she had heard about how different it was and had never previously been outside the of Atlas, this action was encouraged by her father wanting her to see the other kingdoms and see how different the other kingdoms were from Atlas, to get a grasp of the world and broaden her mindset.

So they were given a private aircraft courtesy of Atlas, which Menrva was really excited about until a sudden issue with the aircraft forced an emergency landing, it was just her dad, a group of 8 Atlesian knights and 2 Atlesian soldiers with them. A few stray grimm came to investigate but all were swiftly dealt with, the real problem came when bandits went after the airship and found Atlesians, a battle quickly pursued and they were victorious with only a few of the knights losing some functionality but still usable.

However, a second wave had come and was larger, with a professional combatant with them, not huntsman strength but strong enough for an uphill battle which resulted in their eventual loss. The bots were destroyed with Ra  and the soldiers were taken captive and were going to be used as ransom for money while others went into the ship to take anything that seemed good to sell for a profit.

Within the ship was Menrva, she was too scared and was instructed to stay in the airship which meant she was cornered the moment the bandits had entered the ship, she didn't have aura and bit one of the bandits who had thrown her into the wall which broke her wings near the base. Due to the injuries sustained by the rest of the group, they couldn't fight back and one of the bandits wanted to piss them off so he chose Menrva, being the one who had bit her and had a sadistic streak that was only amplified when he found himself the focus of shared death glares from Ra and the soldiers.

Since he had nothing to worry about he had decided to injure Menrva more and had damaged all of her limbs, repeatedly saying that it was compensation for biting him and to nail the ransom message home, they had sent a picture to Sol and Isabella with Ra's phone, not knowing that they were going to soon meet their demise but just thinking about the potential money they could get. They were half-right and the only reply they received was 'I'll be seeing you soon' from Sol.

Sol had "borrowed" a vehicle from Atlas and had followed the flight path, and an SOS signal was detected from Menrva's scroll, a signal that Menrva had set to send to certain contacts (Sol and Isabella) before she was captured and hid her scroll in her boot. This allowed Sol to track their location, landing a ways off she used her training and experience to eliminate anyone who saw her. When she arrived at the facility, it was already over for the bandits when flames sprinted across the floor and set those without aura aflame, the flames disappearing as the opponents died and the one with aura was attacked personally by Sol, a one-person massacre with all the fury of a sun.

Sol was able to get them all out of there and quickly blew up the knights, all the soldiers and Ra were all worse for wear, with Menrva being the worst out of them, the initial injuries weren't bad per say but time and struggling within her bonds had caused the damage to become quite extensive. Menrva, as well as the others were transported to an Atlas hospital to get treated, it would take longer to get there but Menrva's extensive injuries were best suited to be treated to the more advanced facilities that Atlas possessed and the distance to either Atlas or Vale was pretty much the same. Solaris and the soldiers used a first aid kit and aura to give a small amount of constant healing, preventing further damage which would allow them to get back to Atlas in time.

When Solaris had come back, she received a very angry scolding the moment the ship had popped back on the radar close to Atlas., she would've faced punishments but any decision would be halted and reconsidered as they saw Menrva, Ra and the injured soldiers that were with them. With Menrva being rushed off into an emergency operation to be stabilised, Ra and the soldiers receiving medical attention, all they could do was wait with each hour came and went, and all Solaris, Isabella and patched-up Ra could do was wait in near silence.

Within the operating room Menrva was an absolute mess, they were frankly amazed that Menrva was still alive, her mind on the edge of consciousness as she was rushed in before she was put under, repairing her body was an impossible task, lack of proper medical attention, a rushed job to keep Menrva from bleeding out and a body that had obviously struggled while broken had to be given extreme measures to save her life. The Surgeon and assistants knew that they had no option but to amputate her destroyed limbs and had to hook her up to machines to keep her alive.

37 hours went by, Menrva's family had stayed up to know the results and were mentally exhausted, while Dr. Goud hadn't participated in the operation, he said that he would assist in getting Menrva onto her feet, of course after lengthy discussions about what would need to be done to get her back to a self-sustaining life. The mental exhaustion meant that they heard what he had said, but all of them only heard "she is alive" while Sol heard "she is alive, but she can't fend for herself." but had fallen to exhaustion right after hearing the news.

As Menrva's family slept, Menrva was awake after her surgery and had a brief talk with Dr. Goud, her condition of lacking any of her limbs or her wings had been made clear, which she took fairly well, but that was due to the painkillers that were in her system. Despite this Menrva had asked if he would do anything to help her, Menrva couldn't move, see and only had her ears and mouth to communicate with others outside of her sealed room to keep Menrva free of contamination, her request was a simple one, installation of temporary eyes to allow her to view the schematics.

For the next few weeks, Dr. Goud would send the schematics, Menrva would review them and send feedback, this was Menrva's body after all and she would be damned if anything went by without her giving the okay. Menrva had seen Dr. Goud’s technology and see users nearly instantly gain full use of their limbs, she unfortunately didn’t have that option, she had simply lost too much and any amount of his specific branding of tech couldn’t be used.

Menrva’s request was to get an arm installed, it didn’t need anything other then the basic mechanics, she just wanted to test, Dr. Goud obliged and brought her a stripped down arm and installed it, it took only a few moments and Menrva was already scratching her neck that had bothered her since she was isolated and gave a thumbs up to Dr. Goud for the go ahead and do the rest, but before that, she wanted to design the cyberware, she had all of her previous works and used them, she didn’t particularly like cybernetics on herself, but without a choice she wanted no regrets about what she had installed.

2 weeks later the cybernetics were ready, collaborating with Dr. Goud for some unique gear that was needed to get her out (mostly Dr. Goud’s work) but in the end she underwent the surgery and after a few checks, was at 100% and was released from hospital in the same outfit that she had originally arrived in. Tears from all members of the Star family showed immediately upon sight of one another and some warm felt hugs were received and given. Menrva was saddened that she had lost her wings but it could’ve been worse and she was keeping herself positive that she was just able to see her family again. That night Menrva had dinner at home with her family and the soldiers that were with them, as a brief thanks for putting themselves out there even if it was there job.

While officially checked out of the hospital, Dr. Goud still wanted to have occasional check ups on Menrva to monitor her progress and to ensure that any errors within the cybernetics were immediately taken care since she depended on them to live now.

Despite being clear, Solaris pushed Menrva to undergo combat training for self-defence, she initially protested but gave in to Sol’s demands since that was the best way forward to prevent a repeat of the events that had transpired, with combat training, studies and adjusting to her new life, she was kept quite busy, but not busy enough that she couldn’t experiment with new ideas that she had.

Her first idea was simple, the energy source in her chest powered her heart and was self-sustaining, if she was going to fight then she would need to be able to redistribute the energy to allow for full use of her new limbs. A simple chest plate served as the prototype and she had set it up to connect and redistribute the energy to her arms, little amount of energy proved stable so she increased it, only to feel a burning sensation through her chest, she panicked and forgot to activate her aura, this left circuit based scarring from her chest and a scolding from Dr. Goud when he saw her next.

Despite this Menrva kept this up, improving, learning and training herself so that she could become better and even started to view herself as a protector as 2 years had flown by, Menrva herself had completed her internship and was into her residency. During this time Solaris went out of Atlas to go and help others as a huntress and Menrva had been given a job as a scientist within Atlas, as the buildup of her skills and knowledge in regards to cybernetics making her a valuable asset to have and giving her mostly free reign of her choice in projects to explore. She was given her own private space to work and anything she requested so she kept at it and after another 2 years, Solaris had come back and had been assigned as Menrva’s personal bodyguard.

Menrva has continued like this for a year with the protection of her sister, visiting the other academies and hospitals to upgrade and maintain cybernetics of those who requested it, sometimes on official Atlas business to update someone who had deals or contracts with the military. She also does perform surgery if needed before the installation of cybernetics and works with a fully qualified surgeon but always tends to be her leading during the procedure.

Personality: Menrva upon first encounter is extraordinarily hard to read, impossibly so that even specialists won’t be able to understand what she could be thinking at a notice, this is due to her doll like appearance and mannerisms, her robotic eyes that contract and expand yet seem just a tad bit inhuman (circuitry pattern on her eye), despite her dazzling, this is partly true to Menrva since she is extraordinarily quiet and expressionless when around everyone but a few people that are close to her metallic heart.

However, one should take note that Menrva isn’t actually emotionless as one would believe, she actually cares deeply but fails to show anything to give hint to that, coming off as a vaguely curious and with a slightly interested look at who or whatever it is, a side effect on her outward appearance and trying not to show her own weakness that she showed all too easily during the event that dewinged Menrva.

Aura and Semblance: Menrva’s aura is a bright cyan that is the same shared by her cybernetics, when her aura is visible, a pair of cyan wings will be sprouted from her back, this does not protect anything and shows that Menrva still identifies herself as a faunus through and through even if she has lost her wings.

Semblance name: Synchronisation
A semblance which allows for Menrva to connect and link up with technology, an activation type semblance but can become passive on individual items if certain parameters are met. At a touch Menrva can understand the workings of the item and control it (give her a piece of tech and she'll know how to use it.), as time goes on her understanding and link becomes deeper and once a complete sync is done, Menrva can link the item to her soul and can remotely operate an item with mere thoughts as an extension of her will, however, this requires a full day of uninterrupted contact with her aura to be successful but it works completely fine from there.

Menrva has done this to her armoured suit which is the item she mainly uses it on but has done it to other gear that she uses on a regular basis, which is her scroll, visor, earpiece and a few other miscellaneous items. A variety of chips and USB connectors also work but this grants her limited access and knowledge about an item she has plugged into.

Combat Behaviour: Menrva’s style of combat is unique in that she systematically learns an enemies abilities and uses the best way forward. Her semblance wouldn’t help until one learns that she is filled with tech, even without her armour she possesses enough tech and knowledge to build a sound strategy against anyone that would try anything against her.

Her systematic approach is designed to make an enemy give up the fight rather than to defeat them outright, her lack of expressions can give the impression of a purely logical thinker and helps to emphasise the essence of someone who can’t be outwitted or deceived. Menrva when fighting uses hand-to-hand in tandem with her hard light and forearm blades if she is fighting non-human opponents. Her ability to redirect energy from her core can give her speed, strength and whatever boost she needs at a moment’s notice, all in thanks to her semblance.

Despite this, Menrva lacks true experience in combat, all combat that she has done is always training from Huntsman or Sol so she has never had the feeling of a true fight, this can cause her to make errors in judgement and panic if the situation goes south or she is faced with taking a life.

WEAPON

Name: Firewall and Encryption

Primary Form: Menrva’s dual custom firearms of choice, the basic design is that of a pistol but with a heavily redesigned barrel to fit all the systems that Menrva installed. The basic colour is done in gunmetal grey with small hints of glowing blue when activated.

Secondary Form: When pressing a button on the side the gun transforms to open up, the slide doesn’t move but the sides and bottom move up, this scales the amount of dust ammunition up considerably without increasing the chance of damaging the gun.

Dust/Ammo: F&E uses dust based rounds, her semblance allowing the tips to be changed to dust or regular rounds with a mere thought.

Sonic dust - When this specially designed ammo is used the gun will release a sonic blast that can incapacitate an enemy, it’s power decreases with range and she has a maximum effective range of 10m before the effect starts to weaken from that point fourth which can be resisted without much trouble.

Electric dust - A stunning blast is released which can incapacitate an enemy where they stand, it has a range of 60m before the dust disperses.

Earth dust - Earth will encase anything that it hits in solid rock, the use of earth rather than ice is to prevent the encased body from freezing should a fight become prolonged.

CYBERNETICS
Augmented physical abilities
Flight - Using gravity and kinetic dust, Menrva can give herself ‘true’ flight with a greater manoeuvrability and with a psychic link, is able to adjust every aspect freely
HUD - Menrva’s eyes provide her with all the information that she needs, suit information, scroll and anything else like if she needs something from her server which is kept in her lab.

Hardlight generation - Located in Menrva’s forearms and thighs are hardlight generators, she can generate 4 constructs with each at a minimum or she can generator many small devices (shields), using her semblance to control her shields or created items, she can also strengthen them by layering the hardlight and breaking the useless layers to reform them.

Shock absorption and release - Menrva can use shock absorption, this helps with any hard landings she may have and then she can utilise the stored energy straight away to give herself a massive physical boost.

Repulsion shield - Menrva can utilise dust with her hardlight to generate a field to trap bullets or projectiles, sending them back with dust.

SUIT

Name: Flight Assisted Suit Enhancement

Form: Menrva has built herself powered armour, which is divided into several layers: soft, main and extra respectively. The soft layer doesn't extend to the armour’s limbs since Menrva has mechanical limbs and the armour isn't designed for others to use due to Menrva’s direct link via her cybernetic limbs.

The chest piece is the most noticeable piece of armour, possessing a mainly stark white colour and with a gunmetal grey secondary and cyan highlights. From her chest, to her upper back is also covered in an almost singular piece of white armour, going over the shoulders, elbows with extension, under the arms, lining the abdomen and from her belt line down to protect all of what remains of her actual body. There are pauldrons, forearm armour and hands for her arms and her legs have the outer thigh, boots with connected knee pads.

Menrva’s navel, waist going to her lower back, small section near the collarbone, secondary shoulder attachment, upper arm, front, back and inner thigh. Along with the boots are done in gunmetal grey, the moving parts of the armour which shift constantly with Menrva’s armour to allow for mobility, this gives an extra (unintended) impression of it being almost alive as Menrva does any action.

Menrva’s helmet is kept underneath the two layers of armour, the jawline and mouthplate come from the sides and front respectively and a small clip brings Menrva’s hair into a sort of bun as it comes up and covers the back of her head, neck and the rest of her face. This takes 2 seconds and there are no visible eyes since Menrva connects to the visuals and HUD via her mechanical eyes, an angular visor appears over where her eyes are as if she was wearing her regular visor.

Functions: Weapon - forearm blades - two blades that extend out from her forearms, a clean silver appearance with the segmented parts locking underneath to give the appearance of a solid blade.

Enhancement - Menrva can further increase her output then her regular limbs are capable of to release more strength, speed and boost almost every aspect of herself, this is because the armour features its own power core (not where the glow is, that is a deception) and

History: Armour that was crafted after Solaris’ departure from Atlas on her own personal journey, Menrva created this armour in an almost mimicry of her sister but specified it to her personal needs and uses.

Nice profile Edge.

All looks good, but some mods and myself believe that 22 years old is just a little too young for someone of her qualifications. If she were say, a year or two older, it would be a bit more believable that she would have the time required to become both a scientist and a skilled surgeon (who also happens to be a decent fighter). It's up to you how you go about making the changes, but a slight age-up would be the easiest.

Bumped age up to 23. Would do 24 but having Solaris back for a year can have the two be more connected and synced up.

Image link broke for Atlas uniform, used one with Solaris and Menrva since they are always near eachother and gives a good visual of their height difference.

Edited gun into profile, got approval from Metroid via DMs.

Always nice to see nonstudent characters on the site, will be interested to see what you do with them (also love medical characters).

Nice to see characters with art. A minor point about that is I typically recommend using Imgur for hosting, as I know those links last ages (discord might be totally fine, I just don't have any experience with them).

The timeframe was a bit confusing to follow. It seems like she starts her medical degree at 12 (which is too young even for a prodigy), 4 years later is the conference, and then it moves 3 years at the end which adds up to 19. Perhaps I've missed a step?

And that brings me to my main concern. Surgery is famously, or rather infamously, an incredibly long education. Ignoring cybernetics and everything else from starting college to being fully qualified as a surgeon takes around 13 years (US: 4 year premed, 4 year med, 5 years residency / Norway: 6 years medical, 6.5 residency).

Now we can certainly find some way to make this work, however to start we were wondering what your concept for the character is?

For instance, if the goal is someone who does perform surgery then perhaps they are still in their residency. During residency they would be working at a hospital and in the later years start preforming surgery under supervision.

Wow I am incredibly sorry I didn't get back to you after this, was so focused on Discord and it slipped my mind (the whole global pandemic was rather distracting as well). If ever there is a delay even a fraction of this long feel free to ping me / other staff, as this was way too much and I can only apologize.

Anyhoo, the story has been addressed and is in a good spot now. Most of the character is in a good spot, however, the big issue I still have is the "tech giving free semblances". As we are hardly a mechanically driven site balance is less of a concern, my approach comes more from trying to be fair to other members. It can feel cheap for someone if another character has their own semblance as well as their characters semblance because of tech, so we try to be careful about allowing semblance-like abilities to come from other sources (for instance why we basically ignore Faunus traits as that's some characters semblance)

So the ability for her semblance to control the suit and shift power to different things for a specific boost in power fits nicely with the character and is reasonable tech angle with the semblance (within reason of course).

With that as the semblance the extreme light projection and flight seem like too much for me. We have a few characters with flight(ish) but in those cases it's either tied to or helped by their semblance, we also haven't seen that kind of flight tech outside of ships, so with everything else going on with this character I really don't see any way to make free flight happen without redesigning a ton.

In terms of the hard light using it to make weapons or one or two simple structures is fine, but 16 constructs are waaay too much, once again aura constructs are a popular semblance but even those are far more limited than what this character gets for free. The examples we have in the show are pretty restrictive (Velvet is the most advanced but Watts needed to set up the rings for a simple wall). Maybe something like one on each arm, giving her an interesting weakness (not just inexperienced). Go for double blades for offense, one blade and one shield for defense, maybe help or protect teammates by dropping her offense entirely to use both projectors to give cover. Seem reasonable?

Hud is fine, Shock absorption is fine, releasing said shock for massive physical boost is a semblance I've seen before, same goes for repulsing attacks back.

Hopefully, you can see that this is way too much stuff for a character to get for free, especially one that also gets a ton of extra features from the story with the whole basically youngest medical doctor ever.
