Sky's the Limit [Closed]
« on: January 20, 2020, 09:20:56 PM »
In Prism's opinion, there's too many things she could compare to the sky.

At her current height, her best estimate is champagne. The air is light and bubbly up this high, freshly-chilled and crisp enough to bite the lungs with every inhale. The sky is an endless bowl above her, and the academy grounds below are quickly becoming a distant memory. Gravity still pulls and tugs like an annoying toddler, but all that means is she pulls her limbs in a bit tighter, focuses on the power of her semblance, and-

Lets another powerful updraft hit her outstretched wings, rocketing her another hundred feet above the clouds.

The wind still bites like a dagger with a pain she's come to relish. The cold cuts directly through her thin dress shirt, leaving behind a cold numbness that'll even fade to it's own chill in time. She lost track of the extremities on her face awhile ago, and she can feel wind whistle down the icey valley between her wings that'll melt into an unpleasant dampness later. But ultimately, that all doesn't really matter. As long as she can feel the faint warmth of the sun, and edge of the horizon stays perpendicular to her flight position in the corner of her eye, she can tell which way is up.

Prism can count the number of people that has her gift on one hand. The ability to feel the sky in it's purest, rawest state; unfettered by steel and glass and the uncomfortable thrust of dust-powered rockets, or the staticky hum of antigrav. Call it vain (and she'll easily admit to herself later, it is vain), but it almost means she's supposed to push herself.

Push herself to nearly-impossible heights, where her vision starts popping with little black bubbles along the edge. Where she knows she'll lose counciousness if she pushes too much higher. Where feeling is wiped away by the wind, and every memory that leaves her tethered to the ground drops away against the endlessness around her.

Where she can flare her wings straight out with one final gust of wind, tilt her body horizontal to the sky, and enjoy a millisecond of sunshine before flipping over into precious, adrenal-fueled freefall.

Her smile's lost against the wind in her face.

The sky was a lonely place, Glas thought as he banked ever so slightly to catch the north wind and take some of the load off of his semblance. Do not be mistaken, he would never trade his semblance for anything, for the sky was also open and free. He saw the world spread out below, the blue above, and got the idea that he could go anywhere, and do anything. Up here, he could watch over the people below, and strike swift death from the clouds upon the monsters that stalked the shadows. The cowardly vermin would flee in turn, unable to reach him, unable to fight back.

Well, except for nevermores. They could fight back. But thankfully, Glas had yet to encounter one.

Glas truly cherished the sky, and only wished he had someone else to share it with. His friends and family, no matter how close they were, would never understand the sky as he did. His old dog Colonel probably would, the two having had many hours of conversation over the past eighteen years, but Colonel would never be able to come with him. Indeed Glas was very much alone at the moment, performing his daily route meant to increase his endurance. His only company, as far as he could see, was a lone bird far off in the distance.

Glas gave another downward push with his massive, eagle-like wings, and observed the bird. The first thing he noticed was that its wing structure was nowhere similar to a nevermore's, which was good. The second thing he noticed was the bird's altitude. It was several thousand feet above him, he estimated from this distance. Already the air was very nippy, and it was taking him slightly more effort than usual to catch his breath. If he tried to reach the creature, he'd probably either freeze or black out, a fact he commended the bird for. He watched it climb further still, twisting and turning in an updraft that Glas desperately wished he had at the moment. Then, it turned over in a dive, straight towards the earth. Glas considered this as he watched the dark shape plummet. That was very odd behavior for a-

It's not a bird!

Glass heart exploded in his chest, and the world slowed as he took in every detail. There were no bird species around Beacon with wings of that color, he realized stupidly after sunlight glinted off of the girl's own appendages. Yes, it was a girl! It was a girl with wings! one who'd been flying high enough to black out from oxygen deprivation!

"Oh, dear Oum above!" Glas breathed, and without even registering the action in his brain, he flapped furiously until he was above the girl, and then disengaged his semblance. He free-fall was adrenaline fueled as well, although out of fear for another's safety rather than excitement.

Go! Go! Go! Faster!

It wasn't long before Prism's inverted view of the world was slowly engulfed by a wall of a man. Glas, head pointed towards the ground, body pointed like an arrow, slowly lowered himself until he and the faunus were parallel and face-to-face. The wind howled in his ears, and his eyes stung. But, he was relieved to see that the girl... uh... what was her name? He'd seen her in the halls before. Was it... Priscilla? Patricia? Whatever, not important. Glas was relieved to see that she was conscious. Meanwhile, Prism would be looking into the face of a human, whom all evidence indicated had come from the same direction as she had: above. With no wings or otherwise visible means of flight. Huge, blue eyes the same color as the expanse around them stared into hers with was appeared to be genuine concern. He stood nearly a foot above her, and his shoulders were nearly twice as wide. Two massive hands gloved in rough fighting leather rose up to give a thumbs-up.

"ARE. YOU. OKAY?!" Glas called out over the roar of the wind, the ground still far enough away to where he didn't just opt to scoop her into his arms. His voice was strong and clear, like the deep bark of a large sheepdog.

Freefall is deliciously brutal. The wind's so strong that it press her wings flat to her back, her outermost feathers whipping about uselessly. When she needs to slow down it'll be a struggle to get them outstretched in time, but that really doesn't matter when she's still this high up. Her slightly outstretched arms guide her instead, dodging through wispy clouds and sending herself into spirals that bring about a bevy of giggles that disappear into the sheer white noise of the rushing sky. With the sky below and the ground above her, it fills up every nook and cranny of possible feeling and simply lets her enjoy a singular, beautiful moment and watch the uninterrupted horizon whip by-

...

The.

The interrupted horizon, actually. Rapidly filling in with an unfamiliar humanoid figure.

Dark hair. A farmer's outfit. Definitely bigger than her (even if everyone was). No apparent means of how the fuck he got here.

Grey eyes blink at him in confusion as he literally falls in alongside her. There's pure concern sprawled out across his unprotected features, and- as a quick once-over of his form confirms- absolutely nothing else. She tilts her head "up" towards her feet. There's no drop shipo roaring off into the distance. However he got here, he did it with nothing but the clothes on his back.

The stranger mouths something to her that she can't make out over the roaring wind, even with her sensitive hearing. It's worrisome that he's concerned about her- the one who very evidently has wings- when he doesn't seem to have anything on him that insures he'd survive freefall.

Prism flashes him one moment in return to the thumbs up, before stretching her arms out in front of her. Taking a deep breath of freezing air, the woman closes her eyes- before a sudden, unbidden rushing sound fills the space between them for half a second, and air goes silent.

There's no longer freezing air beating against the both of them. Prism's eyes blink open again. There's a white, wispy aura flying off of her hands and shoulders, trailing slowly behind her like a comet. The air's moving with them now.

"Nice, that worked! Uh, hi there. Where the genuine fuck did you come from?"

Glas tilted his head in confusion. A simple yes or no would have sufficed. After all, they were running out of time. Before he could try and scream at her again, the avian girl started... fogging. Like that weird dry ice stuff. There was a woosh, a roar, then their world became silent. The wind stilled, even though they still hurtled towards the ground at terminal velocity. The big man looked this way and that in utter amazement, having never seen such a phenomenon in the air.

Then, the girl he'd thought he was rescuing spoke, and he barely registered it due to being more focused on the absolute stillness in the air. The only coherent thought in his head was that there was no need for the use of such crude language.

"I... Uh... I flew." Glas replied stupidly, then shook his head vigorously. His face returned to that same look of focus and concern, and he began to go through the steps taught to him during his search and rescue courses. Upon finding the victim, it was always best to assess their injuries before taking any other action. "Are you okay? Are you feeling any numbness? Any confusion? You looked like you were getting pretty high up there; saw you drop like a rock and thought you'd blacked out."

"You flew?" Prism asks, her tone boarding on incredulous. The statement is enough to make her double-take again, glancing up past her feet. Nothing marred the clear blue sky beyond some wispy clouds. No drop ship, no jet pack, no obvious dust enhancements - he didn't even seem to have a weapon on him!

"I'm doing fine! I'm a good judge of where the oxygen limit is by now. But listen-" she adds, shooting him a matching look of concern. "Are you going to be okay? That lake's getting close, and I'm not sure I could carry you."

"Wait... lake?" Glas asked, managing to be even more stupid than he'd been a few seconds prior. Looking "down", he quirked an eyebrow. No, seriously, he actually needed to take a moment to register what he was looking at. Most of his thoughts revolved around the faunus in front of him, mostly relief that he wasn't going to have to perform a midair rescue.

"...Oh. Right. That lake." he mumbled to himself.

Suddenly, wings.

Big wings.

Big, glowing wings, made of pure aura. They were double the length of Prism's, and resembled an eagle's, rather than a hummingbird's.

The wind resistance made these new wings roar like a bullhead. Spiraling away, Glas slowly edged himself back into Prism's silent chamber of air.

"It's all good. I got wings!" Glas reassured. "I'm Glas, by the way! Didn't expect to meet another flyer at Beacon! Nice to meet you!"

The dumbfounded look on her new companion's would normally make Prism stifle a giggle, if it weren't for the severity of the situation. It almost seems like he forgot about the ground.

...though Prism can't really blame him. That's definitely possible to do up here. She's about to open her mouth to reply before something new encompasses her view.

Wings. Massive ones, dwarfing her modest 12 foot feather appendages - already oversized on a body that doesn't even break five feet. Nearly the same color as the sky, if it weren't for the natural glow of-

Aura. It was his semblance!

Her dumbfounded stare as he readjusted in the air is replaced by a massive grin, her own wings extending to their full length to slow her to the same speed. "I never expected to meet another! Name's Prism, feeling's the same! Want to take this conversation upright?"

"Yeah, for sure! I swim about as good as a rock when I'm wearing my gear." Glas replied and slowly began to level himself out. He had to move away from Prism to make room for his wings. The built up airspeed from his free fall meant that he was now rocketing over the ground faster than he ever could by flapping his wings alone. With a little whoop he corkscrewed, then sidled back into place at the hummingbird's flank.

"Prism, right? I think I've seen you around, now that I think about it. What team are you on?" Glas called out over the wind.

Prism's grin gets wider as he corkscrews away. Her own wings flicker once or twice in the nonexistent breeze, before they snap open without any ceremony. There's half a second of blinding iridescence as the strong sunlight hits them, before they snap - and become a near-invisible blur behind the woman's back.

She follows Glas' gentle slop as the two begin to even out over the lake below. The invisible bubble of wind surrounding them follows their descent, but the faunus is no longer literally steaming out of concentration. "Proud leader of Team Casanova here! Howsabout yourself?"

"Me? I haven't gone through initiation yet." Glas admitted with a shrug of his broad shoulders. "Guess they couldn't find the right people to make clever words with our initials. But leader, huh? That must've been a tough job to land!"

There was no hint of sarcasm or jealousy. He seemed genuinely impressed at the title. Being from a large family that had drilled the values of harmony and teamwork into his young mind, Glas understood just how difficult it could be to lead, especially when one's flock was a bunch of hormonal teenagers being thrown into life-threatening situations.

SHWOOM... SHWOOM... SHWOOM...

The massive aura wings beat downwards thrice before settling back into a gentle glide. Glas' semblance relied more on fighting the air rather than cooperating with it. As such, whenever he pushed downwards, they roared loudly and created violent air currents, in challenge to the very force of gravity itself.

"Sorry!" Glas apologized sheepishly, edging away from Prism a bit. Oh, how embarrassing! Not even five minutes after meeting another flight-capable person and he'd already splashed her with the currents from his over-sized feather dusters. Thankfully the windburn was adequately hiding his blush.

"Only kinda!" Prism replies. "I lucked out - my team's fantastic, even if my initial isn't the one at the start of the name."

The faunus temporarily wobbles with the downbeat of his wings but by the third gust the wind seems to blow right past her. As she huffs off his reply, there's a sudden surge of air around the two and Prism catches it - soaring in front of him briefly, before turning around to face him midair as her wings reorient themselves. "Don't worry about it! Controlling air currents is like- literally, my semblance. You can't help the wind."

"Gods, that's so awesome." Glas sighed with a sad shake of his head. He flapped his wings another few times to keep his momentum going. "I mean, I can fly without any sort of outside help, but I'd be lying if i said this weren't wearing me out a little."
