First Year 2v2 bracket- Round 1: Billy & Smokey vs. Setsuna & Calen

(1/10) > >>

Skylia:

”Good afternoon all, and welcome back to the forty-first bi-annual Vytal Festival tournament! We’re back with more matches containing even more Beacon students!” A large portion of the crowd roared with cheering and clapping, clearly showing which kingdom had the best representation. ”Ahem, anyways, we have a lot of familiar faces in this 2v2 match between the first years. On our first team we have Billy Bone and Smokey Emberstone. You know, I wonder if teams decide their lineups randomly. Because this lineup of snipers is either bad RNG or bad decision making. Either way, on the other side we have a slightly more balanced team! Give a warm welcome to Setsuna Antiqua and Calen Shrike. As our only newcomer in this match, let’s see if Calen can entrance us with his stylish combat dance! Let’s move right on to the spinner, since my co-announcer had to take a very timely and lengthy bathroom break.”

A large holographic image of a lottery machine appears on all sides of the arena, with two spinners. The spinners spun so quickly, making it nearly impossible to make out the passing words. It ticked through the options slower and slower until it finally stopped on Ice and Mountain.

The floor of the arena lowered and, in its place, arose two new floors. On Billy & Smokey’s side, a sizeable frozen lake would appear. Despite being perfectly stable for running and walking, any damage from weapons or semblances could spell trouble for those standing on it! On Setsuna & Calen’s side, flat rocky formations rose from the ground ending in a perilous cliff near the top. It is also worth noting that if someone were knocked from the top of the cliff onto the frozen lake, that could also lead to an unfortunate situation.

As the spinner finished its job and faded away, the doors on each side of the arena opened to signify the start of the match.

(A coin flip has decided that Setsuna will get the first post, followed by their partner. The arena size is identical to that of the team combat arena in the show, however, it features scaled down biomes to fit the size. Good luck, and may the best team win.)

MonsterManic:
Well, at least the lake was frozen this time.

Stepping into the decisively unique arena with Calen right behind him, Setsuna actually looked downright casual compared to his other matches. His sword was sheathed at his hip and his hands were in his pants pockets. He carried with him an air of chill--or at least he would have if he wasn't armed to the teeth with green blades and white-blue shields. Even so, he didn't look concerned in the slightest.

"What do you think, Calen?" he asked, turning to face his battle partner. While doing so, he beckoned him behind a rock formation, knowing full well that they were up against two ranged fighters, one with something even both of his shields would have trouble blocking a hit from.

Kingnoname1:
'Should be fun.' Calen remarked grinning. The hunter in training was rather impressed by how composed his leader was given the circumstances, even Calen himself felt nerves the increased pressure on a leader must be intense. 'I've ran into both Master Smokey and Miss Bone before, Smokey's got the far larger weapon but Billy can make a lasso as her semblance which would rob us of our greatest advantage, speed.' Calen continued. Following Setsuna to cover knowing first hand the firepower at least Smokey was carrying. 'We have some choices with the terrain though, if we rush out we can use the ice to our advantage but we have to deal with their open fire or we can let them come to us which may lose us initiative but should be able to avoid most of their fire behind these outcrops.' Calen explained, he was clearly in favour of a more frontal approach although his desire to see his opponents best before defeating them could spell disaster for their team.

'There is another matter we should discuss. Your semblance is more powerful than mine but we need to play around that recharge time, so whatever we do I think I should take point and you follow up to maximise how much damage you can do within that window.' Calen proposed. An unfortunately large part of himself was looking forward to playing punching bag kept in check only by the knowledge he would put on less of a show beaten up. 'Regardless it would be impolite not to do introductions.' Calen remarked before raising his voice loud enough for Smokey and Billy to hear. 'So how are we all doing? Hope you've had some practice with you lasso Miss Bone and you some control of that temper Master Smokey.' Calen called out already beginning his verbal assault even if the physical one is on hold. Calen had already seen Smokey's temper in action before and with a weapon like the later wields it would only take one outburst to spell some serious consequences.

All in all, Calen was rather confident in their chances, which defines 100% of encounters Calen has but it was more than just his pride here. Like the announcers said Billy and Smokey may be powerful range fighters but that is all they were and without any real means to disengage meant a single mistake could give 'SC' the win.

ReaperJoe:
Before the match began, Smokey paused for a moment at the announcer's slight mistake.  "Sniper?  Has anything I've done been reminiscent of a sniper, Billy?"  Sure, he uses a gun, but if anyone thinks he can't knock heads with the best of 'em, they're in for a rude surprise.

Then the door opened, and Smokey's confidence in this match...lowered somewhat.  A lake of ice appeared before him, and that made the gunslinger a little uncomfortable.  Heavy armor and clothes?  Check.  Heavy weapons?  Check.  Ammunition that should probably avoid water?  Check.

"Nope, not dealing with this," Smokey said as he hurriedly tries to move across the ice lake as quickly as possible.  It's an awkward time, and he has to flail his arms a bit to keep steady, but slowly and surely, he's making progress.  He just needs to focus on keeping his feet under him for the time being.

L-Money:
Billy shrugged in response to Smokey's question.

When the gate opened and Billy was hit by a blast of cold air. "Great. Ice." she said, her voice seething with sarcasm. She slowly stepped on the ice, slipped a little, and then a lot. She had never been on ice before. She fell on her butt and frowned. She was getting nowhere fast.

Calen's voice echoed through the battlefield. 'So how are we all doing? Hope you've had some practice with you lasso Miss Bone and you some control of that temper Master Smokey.'

Thanks to Calen, Billy had an idea. She crawled over to Smokey. The ice was freezing hell on her bare hands. Using him as a steadying tool she stood up and held on to him. She sent her lasso semblance over to the nearest sturdy rock on the border of the frozen lake. With on hand clutching Smokey, she pulled them both to the edge of the lake. It was much easier than she expected to be that the ice was so slippery.
