The blue pen in Prism's hand is moving rapid-fire throughout Malina's explanation, filling over half the notebook page with various notes and reminders to herself about the complicated aura process. Find and achieve the shape of your soul through focusing inwards. Observe it until you find a part of yourself, then break off that part of your soul. That part of your soul will temporarily be filled with aura until it grows back - temporarily boosting your defensive capabilities to theoretically boundless limits. If you're willing to sacrifice enough of yourself, you'll become indestructible.

Somehow, that makes perfect sense.

Prism promptly chugs half of the energy drink, before raising her hand and firing off the usual series of rapid-fire questions. "Beyond being utterly fascinating, there's a lot of questions I have about this process. Firstly, you mention that you're essentially chipping away at your soul for the sake of replacing it with defensive aura. What're the negative connotations of that, especially when you start removing entire pieces? Is it possible to lose certain parts of your soul entirely, or even all of it? Furthermore, what happens if you do- if you get rid of so much of yourself in the conquest for power that you're left without a soul- is that actually possible? Secondly. you mentioned the defensive boost will only last for eight hours - do we know why it lasts that long? Is there a way to extend that amount of time, or even make it permanent? Finally, why does it necessitate taking the attribute about yourself that you love the most, instead of getting rid of the negative ones such as fear or cowardice? If you're able to temporarily shed certain attributes about yourself - fear, cowardice, whatever - it could be a major battlefield advantage. So is there a specific way to change what trait is replaced, or even choose?"

Malina paused thinking back to when she started the process of breaking parts of her soul just to get a little stronger. "It... Mm.." She cupped her chin as she considered the questions. "You're getting into a part of the field that is much, much more theory than concrete answers but to try to answer your questions in order, there hasn't been any records that I could find of anyone fully eliminating their soul. I figure at the point where they are strong enough to struggle through that process, they can already achieve the final step toward becoming a master. That said, there haven't been any records of someone permenantly losing part of themselves from just doing one purging but... Two? Yeah, there are records for something like that." Malina took her hand away from her chin and her generally neutral expression sunk into a frown. "It's most common with people just starting out, they remove part of themselves and replace it with aura and they get greedy, try run the process again before the eight hour mark. I haven't read anything about them losing part of themselves but they come back..." Malina sought for the right word. "...Changed. Whatever they had removed comes back muted while other aspects are more emphasized. Record seem to indicate that it only got worse with time."

"To answer the second question, it's more of a soft limit than anything. Keeping that replacement aura on the edges of your aura takes concentration, even if just a small amount. As tike goes on, though, it becomes tougher and tougher to hold. When you start the process, you will not be able to hold it for eight hours. Eight hours just seems to be the general limit for most people to keep the aura up. Generally speaking if you're going around doing things after adding aura, it won't last as long while if you're just sitting in a room training your aura, it'll last longer. Assuming you can keep yourself sane. As for making it permenant... Theoretically if you permenantly removed part of yourself maybe but, like I said, I've never heard about that happening."

"The last part... Now diving deep into therotical aura study. There are plenty of ideas, no answer. Maybe it's just you subconsciously hardening yourself to train, maybe it's some external force, maybe man's nature. No one knows." Malina consciously wiped the frown off her face. "Any other questions?"

Prism manages to generate another solid half-page of notes from Malina's latest explanation, a concentrated frown on her face as her pen flies across the page. Well, that throws one theory out the window of using this method to chip away at her PTSD - it's not worth making it come back worse, even if there's a way she could mute the memories.

"Two more, Ms. Nauhalli. What type of effect does this process have on a person's semblance? Since you're replacing part of your soul with pure aura and semblance is dependent on aura, does it temporarily receive a boost in power as well? Or does it weaken, or just stay the same overall? Secondarily, do you essentially just... lose access to whatever you sacrifice? Like if you love someone, you won't love them for approximately 8 hours after that chunk's been removed?"

Malina shook her head, "No, it seems like this process only boosts the aura that feeds the defensive barrier, so unless you want to shoot yourself in the foot and pull from there you won't find any increase in power, control, any of that." Malina paused once more, weighing her words. "It's more than just losing it, though it depends how far gone it is. The more you're able to replace, the less you feel whatever you lost. The further it gets, though, the less... concrete things get. You don't just lose the ability to love someone, you lose the ability to understand love for anything, anyone. The idea of being able to love, being loved, or others loving others is lost entirely to you. It's not that it's just gone, it was never there. You know something is missing but you don't know what."

Malina turned her vision to Amane. "They won't help with natural aura training, no. The main purpose of the first step is to prepare you for the second and third... Speaking of which..." Malina turned on her heel and picked up the can from its place and stuck it just on the edge of the desk. "The second step is where many people who have the potential to master their aura stop, mostly for two reasons. The second step provides ample abilities to those who can achieve it and breaking into the third step is incredibly difficult, painful, and time-consuming on its own."

"After completing the first step and gaining the ability to double one's aura, they are tasked with putting that aura to use. The first step is to train you to get used to having larger pools of aura than normal, the second step is putting it to better use. While normally, using aura is limited to what we had on the board before, with a significantly larger pool of aura we can try new things with it, such as..."

Malina stretched out her hand and a faint raspberry glow began to emanate from her, extending out a foot, a foot and a half, two feet before it reached the can and pushed it off the desk before snapping back to the contours of her body.

"Nothing flashy, I know..." She began as she went to pick up the can, "but it's an important baseline to show. You know it wasn't my semblance, those that have seen me fight, because if it were..." Malina bent back up and cupped the can in her hand for a split second for a bassy crack filled the room and the can rocketed up and slammed into the ceiling. "... It wouldn't have been as controlled or soft."

"Now, like I said it's not flashy but there are plenty of things that the second step can afford you. As far as I'm concerned, you're only limited by time, aura pool, and creativity. Some of the more common uses range from extending your aura out to take hits in a larger range, cover spots or people with aura to defend against semblance that can't affect anything with aura covering them, or just general beefing up of normal aura attacks. My current favorite is thickening, solidifying, and softening the aura underneath your feet, essentially creating a buffer between you and the ground or, if you're going downhill, free skates."

"The main purpose of this stage is to let you act, fight, and live with increased aura pools as naturally as you do with normal pools. Any questions?"

Prism pauses her notetaking through Malina's demonstration of what you could do with the advantage of expanded aura pools, actually staring with a minor look of awed wonder on her face. Prism's capable of some fancy tricks with her aura, and she's still attempting to learn it's other common offensive uses, but that - that was something she'd never seen before. As the can hits the ground, she flips the page in her notebook and begins to rapidly scribble another page of notes - recording everything the TA said.

The sudden sound of Malina launching the can makes Prism visibly start, her gaze snapping to the sight of the can embedded in the ceiling while her spare hand reaches for the back of her belt. She stares for a moment after seeing it's just a can, watching a bit of drywall crumble to the floor, before releasing a silent breath and bringing her hand back around. Right, it's not like that would've done much anyways - she doesn't carry Hawk's Eye to class, anyways.

Prism doesn't really bother to raise her hand anymore, just launching into her next questions. "So step one is to sacrifice a piece of your soul in order to raise your overall aura pool. Step two is the application of that expanded aura pool, which allow for essentially a limitless possibility of different tricks. So what's step three then, and exactly how many steps to this process are there?"

The third and final step comes in three parts.” Malina began and she stepped back, letting the can fall from the ceiling to her feet. She'd catch hell for the dent in the ceiling, she was sure, she just wasn't sure if it would be overshadowed by her teaching children about the process.

Condense. Spiral. Fractal.

Once you master increasing your aura and master being able to mold your aura, you can move on to the first stage. The first and roughest stage of this step has someone condense their aura down, looking inward as they have done so many times before and distilling their soul to the absolute essentials, shrinking their aura to near nothingness compared to what it has been before.

Malina made her way back aground the desk and took a seat in the chair. “Then, when the aura is truly condensed and you are defenseless and vulnerable, everything comes back. The empty space within you that used to be filled with aura is once again filled with new and pure aura, returning everything they distilled. Each time this process is done, the users aura is permanently increased.

Malina leaned forward and cast her eyes over the students. “But this is rough, the process takes longer each time and just one increase can take up to a week. You won't perceive it, to you it will seem like a day, maybe a bit more, but when you finish the process your body knows it's been a week. Starved of food and water, sustained by cannibalizing distilled aura, you'll feel like death. Each time there's less and less improvement, more and more time to increase. That's why the next stage exists, a more efficient form of increasing aura, but something impossible to do right out of the gate.

Malina idly scratched at the wood of the desk with her fingernail, careful not to damage the material. “The goal, the true goal, of this stage is molding your aura, to take the lessons learned in the second step and stretch them to their extents.

Each person's aura fills their body and shines a bit past it, protecting them, but it's generally person shaped if it hasn't already been manipulated. Here, you must change the shape of the inward aura while keeping the outward aura in its shape. If done correctly, the shape will hold and become permanent, if not it will very, very, very painfully snap back to its original shape.

The inward aura, the shapeless form you first see when you begin the process, must be twisted, turned, and broken into a galaxy-like spiral shape, a spiral that continually spins within you. The direction of the spin doesn't matter, what matters is that each arm of the spiral feeds into the outward aura, continually refilling it as its broken away and rebuilding the aura taken from the center of the spiral. This continually spinning spiral will create a well for aura to be pulled from when broken away on the surface and a space for aura to be rebuilt while the aura spiral is protected by the outward aura."

"If you thought starving your body of food and water was rough, this process takes two weeks. To straight weeks of meditation, pain, and mind bending boredom. Unlike the first step, you don't only perceive a day or two, you need to be completely conscious through the entire process in order to keep the inner aura from breaking form. This step has killed those who make even a small mistake and permanently injured others.

Successfully completing this stage, though? That's  the greatest accomplishments an aura scholar or master can achieve. The ability that allows one to stand against insurmountable odds without flinching. But it isn't the greatest achievement.

You condense, you twist and turn your aura, and now you have to do both, simultaneously. Because the greatest thing a scholar or master can do is to start the process over. Turning inward to the spiral, meditating on it, condensing it, condensing it, condensing it, and finally taking that spiral and twisting it into a spiral made of spirals. This fractal has innumerable wells of aura, innumerable arms to feed the outward aura and into other wells of aura.

It doesn't matter the experience of the person attempting this, it doesn't matter how prepared they are, this process breaks nearly every single person who attempts it, taking a month alone just to complete it and causing indescribable pain to the body in the process. You need to carefully mold your aura through the pain for a month straight. No food. No water. No sleep. No breaks. If you compete this step without dying, you'll wish you had. Your body will be starved and emaciated, the only preparation that can help with this is fasting. There can't be any outside help, feeding you, providing an IV drip, no. This has to be done alone. Any outside influence could disrupt and corrupt the entire process.

But what do you get for enduring that pain? You get to join the ranks of world class hunters and huntress who have a fraction of the aura you do, you can walk up to a Death Stalker and let it do whatever it wants to you and come out unharmed, you can do things some people only dream of.

Malina leaned back in her chair and looked over the class again, her eyes narrow. “What you don't get is invincibility, you don't get immortality, and you don't get to ignore the consequences of your actions. These people can die, just like anyone here, if taken by surprise or if they deplete their aura. They don't get to live forever, they don't get to ignore rules and laws because they're stronger.

There’s a few quiet moments where Prism stops taking notes, staring wide-eyed at Malina as she explains the next steps to take. What she’s explaining sounds unreal, and frankly somewhat eldritch - but given the complexities of aura, it somehow all makes sense. And the scariest thing about that all?

It doesn’t sound that hard to accomplish.

There’d been a time after her parents died where she’d been despondent, dead to the outside world. Too scared to sleep thanks to the nightmares, any appetite completely gone. She’d barely done anything to maintain herself, and even then it was only when forced. She remembered those days in grueling detail, the way it felt like drowning and the hopeless that choked her throat - forcing herself to remain awake for every second of it, otherwise risking seeing the death of her father on loop.

In the end, it had been months before she’d managed to pull herself together, when she eventually had another goal to live for.

If she’d done it once, she could do it again.

Snapping out of her revere with a start, she rapidly begins to transcribe every word of Malina’s explanation while firing off her usual round of questions. ”Okay, please tell me that this affects semblance capacity in some way, shape or form, because I will legitimately be surprised if it doesn’t considering semblance is a fucking manifestation of your soul. Secondly, what’s the best path or approach to start studying and preparing for this topic? Finally, how can this get any more abstract than turning your soul into a fucking fractal?”

Malina narrowed her eyes further toward Prism as her mouth curled slightly into a frown. "First of all, from what I've heard and read, there's no increase in power but there is an increase in how much, how far, and how long you can use it. Increasing the power of your semblance can only be done one way, training it like a muscle. Second of all, there are theories that one could take the abstract fractal shape and mold it into a three-dimensional, spherical fractal. That said, I haven't found any records of it being accomplished."

"As for your second question," Malina leaned forward and put her elbows on the desk, resting her chin on her folded hands, "The best and only method for starting the process is to find, and be under the supervision of, someone who has already mastered their aura. There are a few... catches... that I failed to mention. I think it's best for everyone to at least have this information, even if they can't act on it. It's important and useful for the study of aura and semblances. That said, had I gone over the dangers at the start, I'm sure some would have tuned out. So let's start over from the beginning."

"If everyone in this class attempts the first stage of this process, approximately 85% of you will die."

"There are two restrictions that keep this process from being widespread, if there weren't then there would be no reason for it to not be taught worldwide. The first restriction is that the person attempting this must be naturally talented with their aura control, the second is unknown. There are plenty of theories about what it is but we know for a fact that not every naturally talented aura user can accomplish this process. The theory I subscribe to ties back to the metaphor of the aura being your body and your semblance being your mind. If you have a naturally gifted body but lack intelligence, you won't be able to complete the process. If you have a genius intellect but lack the proper body, you will not be able to complete the process. That is, you must have the proper aura talent and a compatible semblance to even think about accomplishing this. So what would a proper semblance be? Well, this is all about aura, increasing aura, molding aura, being talented with aura. It makes sense, then, that the semblance must be very closely tied to aura. Take my semblance, I can propel my aura outward in a quick, concussive burst in any direction. That's something someone with enough aura and enough talent could do on their own, maybe with a bit less force and maybe with a bit less range, but it can be done nonetheless. I am of the opinion that in order to complete this, you must have a semblance that is, or is closely tied to, something one could already do with their aura. Without both of these things, attempting to start this process will only permanently damage your aura or worse."

"Like I said earlier, the only way to start this is under the supervision of a master. I had started the process without one and I'm incredibly lucky to not face any negative repercussions other than it taking longer for me to be able to finish the first stage. That said, there was another girl who had been intending to train under Professor Neelabadri and did the same thing I did. She isn't able to use her aura defensively anymore."

"When trying to break away part of yourself to make room for more aura without knowing exactly how and having someone supervising, it far too easy to mistakenly cause permanent damage to your body, mind, aura, semblance, or soul. Additionally, when breaking away part of your soul, your semblance is much less effective during the eight hours that you have additional aura. You don't get to remove part of yourself and gain more defense by just giving up some part of yourself."

"If any of you plan on trying this, think about if its worth it. If you have even the faintest hint of doubt, give up."

Prism turns back to her notes, twiddling with her pen for a moment before it begins to write down Ms. Nahualli’s latest explanation. This technique only had a 85% success rate - it’ll kiss you by the first phase if you dared try it, and even then if it decides to be merciful, you’ll be permanently crippled for life. That’s not to mention that Prism might not even be possible of accomplishing it, given that creating and controlling large gusts of wind isn’t something that can be done with a person’s aura normally.

Prism’s pen stops for a moment as she bites her lip, a rare frown etching itself into her face. This wasn’t something worth learning if it weakened her, or weakened her semblance - she was perfectly aware that she couldn’t physically stand up to a good portion of the academy, and sometimes the only thing that kept her on her feet was an oversized aura and overpowering semblance, so-

When had that ever stopped?

Her mind made up about approaching Ms. Nahualli after class was over to evaluate her candidacy, Prism resumes her rapid chicken-scratch notetaking. Her hand flies into the air as per the norm at the end of the TA’s monologue, not waiting to get called on to ask her question. “Ms. Nahualli, if it’s so dangerous, why did you personally decide it was worth learning?” She asks, tilting her head to the side slightly.
