Title: A Warm Welcome [Closed]
Post by: Moth on June 28, 2018, 12:53:30 AM
It's an excellent day to meet somebody new, yet despite this, Prism can't help but harbor a tinge of nerves.

It's a beautiful day at Beacon, classes have just let out right before the weekend. The hummingbird faunus is still decked out in her school uniform, minus the the jacket used to conceal her wings, and the iridescent feathery limbs are easily visible in the afternoon sunlight, glinting in all their glory. The announcement of another recipient of the Royale Scholarship came as a shock to the woman, but hearing about how the student would also be attending Beacon Academy had revealed an opportunity to her - it'd thrown her back to her first few nervous days, when she'd just met her teammates for the first time. It'd been a nerve-wracking time, wondering if she'd get along with them or if she'd be a good leader, and even if those fears were assuaged now, she better than anybody understood the daunting challenge of attending a school that pumped out modern-day heroes.

So she'd volunteered to welcome the new student, and make those first moments a little less awkward. They'd definitely at least have the scholarship to bond over, so it was as good a starting point as any. The fact that the new arrival was from Atlas was slightly concerning - they typically didn't hold the best opinions about faunus up there - but forcing herself beyond any worry, Prism was ready to welcome the new student, and hopefully introduce them to everything Beacon had to offer.

That's why she's planted herself outside the front doors of the school, bouncing in her heels, bearing a sign that said "YU NANHAI" in all-caps. Combined with the occasional flap of her wings, she's a hard spectacle to miss, which is what she's counting on.

A strong blast of wind accompanied the noise and clatter of a regular transport Bullhead landing on one of Beacon's many landing platforms, discharging many Hunters-in-training of varying age and year, size and shape, colour and shade, each one unique in their own resplendence. An equally large crowd waited to embark on their short trip to the main hub of Vale. With both crowds trying to exit and enter the airship at the same time, there was no way to identify one specific person from the mess.

Until the crowd eventually dispersed, all heading their own separate ways bar one. A nondescript, short, shabbily-clothed boy standing to the side of the platform watching people disappear in all directions. It didn't take long for the glitter of wings to catch his eye, along with the placard the Faunus was bearing, but it took longer for him to approach. It was clear that he was slightly hesitant, though none of that showed in his voice when he addressed the student standing in front of him. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance, fair lady. Might I have the privilege of discerning what to address you by?"

He's short.

That, of course, is the first thing Prism notices. She quickly takes in the cute face, the otter's nose - thank fuck, he's a faunus as well - and the nondescript clothing. The most important part though, is that in her heels, she's an inch taller than him. She doesn't have to crane her head to make eye contact for once, all she needs to do is look slightly downwards.

This is great.

Prism lets the placard drop to the ground next to her, holding her hand out to the newcomer to shake it. She blinks a moment at his odd style of address, but it does get the corner of her mouth to quirk up - he's beyond polite. "Prism Skylark! It's a pleasure to meet you. It's Yu, right?" She asks

"Indeed, Miss Skylark." Yu bows as a sign of respect, unfazed by the wordplay, before taking Prism's hand in a much stronger grasp than appearances would show. "It is good to see many of our kind studying in such a prestigious place as Beacon. I trust that the conditions here are much more...forgiving than Atlas, allowing us to flourish and prosper." While his tone is polite, it's clear that there's much more than meets the eye.

"On that topic, I am afraid that I am not at all acquainted with the school grounds." He cocks his head slightly to emphasise his question. "Mr. Royale mentioned that another of his beneficiaries would be guiding me."

"Vale is definitely an improvement on Atlas, but it's no Menagerie. As much as I hate to say it, there's still people in the school who have a hard time viewing faunus as well- people. Thankfully those that accept us outnumber those against us, at least in my Spencerian, but I still implore you to be careful." Prism answers, nodding in confirmation of Yu's suspicions. Even if Beacon was much more forwards-thinking than most places, that still didn't prevent slur-filled graffiti from occasionally being sprawled across Prism's locker.

At Yu's mention of another recipient, Prism's smile grows a bit wider. Drawing back her hand, she straightens up a bit before fluffing her wings. "And I'll happily say that's me, actually! I volunteered for the position once hearing that there was another recipient. I'll gladly give you the full tour, though - have you been assigned a team or living quarters yet, or are you living somewhere off-campus? We should find somewhere to leave your stuff."

Yu's face contorts strangely at Prism's words, though it is quickly replaced by a expression of neutrality. "I am afraid the Royale scholarship does not provide for my every need, although I could not in any conscience ask for more. As is, I have found living space elsewhere, and am looking for extra jobs to supplement my requirements." He looks around awkwardly, shoving his hands in his pockets. There's a clink of metal touching metal as he does.

"To answer your first question. Beacon has yet to confirm that I am even here, let alone assign members of a team. And...most of what I own is also stored where I live, so feel free to lead the way."

Prism listens carefully, making a mental note to be a bit more sensitive with her words. "Okay, cool! First stop would probably be the administrative offices to get your arrival registered, then we can do a tour of the library, lockers, classrooms, and can show you around the dorms as well, if you'd like!" She suggests, starting towards the front doors and gesturing for Yu to follow her in.

"The training halls might also be a good idea, alongside making sure you get your uniforms and stuff, get ready for class on Monday. There's also getting you your schedule, syllabus, and uniform..." She prattles on, more a list of what to do to herself than anything for Yu to worry about.

"...Beg pardon, administrative offices?" Yu abruptly halts his advance toward Beacon's doors and looks at Prism, head cocked curiously. "...What on Remnant are those, pray tell?" By the expression on his face, one could tell that he was both utterly serious and completely baffled. "I do assume you are not taking advantage of me to pull my leg, but..."

Continuing to listen to Prism's stream of words, he notes the repeated mention of uniforms with a sense of unease, but the other things bring him relief. "I must admit I have quite high hopes for Beacon's training facilities. Let us hope that I will not be disappointed by the result."

...Okay, she might be moving a bit fast. Prism turns around to face Yu, walking backwards as they approach the great hall. "The administrative office is where all the paperwork is handled. It's basically where they're going to go 'Oh hey, Yu Nanhai is at the school now! He's an official student!'" She fauxely-quotes, before spinning around to drag open the school's front doors for the new arrival. "And no worries - Beacon's training facilities are top-notch, and the staff's even better." She answers, gesturing for him to go inside.
