CHARACTER

Name: Mao Visorith

Age: 16, Born 11 Saule 63 A.C.

Species and Gender: Human, Male

Symbol: -

Occupation: First-Year Beacon Student

Appearance: 5'5"(~168cm) and approximately 145lbs(~66kg). Atop Mao's head sits his beach-like hair--its color like that of soft sand and its texture, the serene ocean nearby--with his bangs parted in such a way that it narrowly avoids intruding into the line of sight into his eyes, those of which both gods and kings would admire for their deep-purple hue. His skin, as if caressed by the Sun, is a creamy light-tan. [ ]

Mao's casual attire is like that of any suburban teenager--a night-forest green hoodie with a zipper, deep-sea blue jeans, and sneakers which have the same color palette a roasted marshmallow with the base being white and the upper-section being a range of light-brown to black. The only unusual additions to this outfit are his tight, black leather gloves which are worn when he isn't wearing his gauntlets; otherwise, they sit in the pockets of his hoodie. [ ]

Because of his fight styling, Mao must remain quick and nimble, and as such, he wears no armor. Instead, Mao's battle attire more closely resembles civilian clothing: A graphite-gray turtleneck jacket, sand-colored jeans, and flat-black hunting shoes. [ ]

History: Mao was born in the town of Phoumi. He is one of his parents' third children as, alongside him, came his twin sister Hansa. Unlike his older siblings, Mao admired the way that his father fought without fear even in the face of Grimm with only his gauntlets. At the age of 5, he began to train under him.

Despite Mao's circumstances, his childhood could be considered fairly normal. When he wasn't training, he would almost always be hanging out with Hansa and helping her with whatever chores and errands she had, even if he wasn't particularly good at them. On the other hand, Mao would go and pull off harmless pranks on people, all the while dragging along a reluctant yet willing Hansa; their also-devious mother would join in time-to-time to the delight on one twin and dismay of the other. The village considered them inseparable and gave the pair two nicknames depending on who was in charge: The Devilish Duo (The Tumultuous Trio when their mother was around) and The Delightful Duo.

When Mao was 10, his father returned from a mission gravely wounded, and the village's doctors were uncertain if they would be able to save him; even if they could, he would be out of commission for a long time. His mother, thinking about Mao's future, asked him to consider attending Signal. At first, he was hesitant. He didn't know much about the city, and he didn't want to leave behind his family, especially his twin sister, but Hansa assured him that it would be a good opportunity to make himself stronger and that she would be fine staying behind in the village. With that Mao agreed, and he soon moved to the city under the supervision of Sophea. Not long after, his father passed away.

Mao went into his first year at Signal with the weight of his father and future on his shoulders; combined with being new to the city and being stuck in his old habits, he struggled heavily as he was unable to adjust well to his new environment. His academics were also sub-standard, and even though his professors did the best they could, he was unable to catch up to an appropriate level. In the end, Mao's first year was a disaster and he was held back a year.

Over the summer, he returned to his abode in the city as a failure. Mao moped around for a while until his sister finally pulled him aside to talk. They talked about several things ranging from their village to Signal, and at the end, Sophea hammered down on what was weighing him down. They spent a good while talking about their father before she went on to say that he was no longer here to pave the way for Mao and that Mao had to forge his own path through life; his mother believed he could and that is why he was here in the first place. This simple pep talk freed him from the chains of his mind and emotion, and with it, he went on to graduate from Signal.

In-between terms during the summer, Mao would often wander around the city streets. He had no clear directive; it was just a way to clear his mind. He also found some pleasure in exploring new parts the city and noticing new things about areas he was already familiar with. It was during one of these walks that he met a man by the name of Johnny Lo who went on to take Mao under his wing and give him a deeper experience of the city which usually revolved around his gang's club.

It was at this particular club that Mao grew into the person who he is today. It was there that Johnny taught him life skills, the first of which was being able to socialize well. There were all sorts of people walking through the doors of the club, and Mao was forced to interact with all sorts of them. Being from "the country", it was a tough thing to get used to, but soon it became second nature for him to pick up on and adapt to people's personalities. Included among his "training" was lessons on the different criminal organizations operating in the city and who he should especially look out for. Johnny also taught Mao some less essential things like a variety of dancing, card-playing, and a bit of beat-boxing.

Personality: With how his environment built him up, Mao's final personality fluctuates quite a bit depending on who he is interacting with.

When Mao can truly be himself, he is devious, friendly, laid-back, curious, independent, and elusive--not unlike a cat. He is always getting himself into some sort of trouble and trying to talk his way out of it; he never tries to take it too far, and if he were to, he is quick to admit his mistake and apologize.

To his friends and others he is close to, while still devious and friendly, Mao is also loyal and dependable, always trying to make sure they are cared for. Even for strangers, Mao looks to make sure that everyone he meets is happier than before he met them (and not because they are happy that they don't have to interact with him anymore).

When working toward his own goals, Mao is hard-working and determined like his sister, Sophea, though not to the same extreme as she is. He especially takes weapon, combat, and anything-related training seriously and will often devote most of his daylight hours to it until whatever goal he has is reached. For anything not-related goal, he puts aside a couple of hours every day to doing whatever it is that he needs to do, and for things that he doesn't care much about at all, Mao prefers to sweep it off to the side; his grades often take hits because of this.

Aura and Semblance:
Onyx (#353849)

Spoiler: ShowHide
Mao's semblance is being able to fire shockwaves from his punches (hadouken-esque). The shockwaves have a range of 30 feet and can be charged for additional damage. Mao can channel his semblance into his fist to instead give his punches additional damage instead of having to fire the shockwaves for damage.

The stamina exerted to use his semblance is proportional to how much stamina he would use performing a punch of equivalent force. Additionally, past a certain point, the recoil of the shockwaves also start to wear him down at an increasing rate proportional to the difference between the shockwave's strength and the threshold.

The shockwaves are the color of his aura, and the stronger the shockwave, the stronger the color. The same concept applies to when Mao channels the semblance into his fist.

Combat Behavior: Mao's specialty is hand-to-hand combat, but that isn't the best place to be in a fight with his low durability and lack of armor. Though he'll do that when given the chance, Mao takes more of a mid-ranged and support role. He keeps his distance and observes how fights are going, and when he gets a good grasp on the flow of battle, Mao lets his allies know what's up and switches his gears for combat himself. He will usually either go for an ally that needs assistance, the weakest point in the enemy formation, or critical targets that would be better taken care of early. If his targets happen to be long-range, he'll try his best to close the gap between them if only to catch their aggro; because Mao has no reliable long-range capabilities of his own, making any moves against long-ranged fighters is very risky and he only does so when necessary.

With Mao's adaptive personality comes his ability to coordinate his teammates by assessing their traits and being able to communicate with them well as to what the plan is. He is able to put their talents in places where they would be most effective. If something were to go wrong, he is easy to blame and place heavy guilt on himself.

While Mao is suited to be a decent leader, he prefers to instead be a follower. As long as he respects the leader, or at least believes the leader is competent, then he will do his best to follow their wishes. If a leader were to come up with something that Mao objects to, he would try to convince him otherwise; he wouldn't take it too far as to jeopardize a mission unless it were something serious.

MAIN WEAPON

Name: (Left, Right) Vithu, Serei; Together known as Amara.

Primary Form: Gauntlets with retractable 12"(~30.5cm) blades mounted on top of them. The blades are connected to the gauntlets by a steel wire. Using his aura to manipulate a switch within the gauntlets, Mao can:

Loosen: Allows the wire to move freely
Lock: Locks wire at current length
   Retract: Retracts wire
   Detach: Detaches wire
Fire: Fires blade with spring mechanism

When unsheathed, the blades gain 2"(~7.5cm) that was before hidden in the mount. The wires max out at 20"(~610cm) though at max length, it is mainly used for grappling or entangling.

Dust Functions: None

History: Amara was forged in the halls of Signal. Because Mao is nowhere near as strong as his father was, blades were mounted onto his gauntlets to increase their lethality. Mao and his instructors at Signal continued to build upon the design by attaching wires to the blades giving him some ranged potential; this was partly inspired by his own mother's primary weapons.

BACKUP WEAPON

Name: Vireak

Primary Form: A back-up dagger with an 8"(~20cm) blade, the blade being able to compact and retract into the handle.

Dust Functions: None

History: Bought from a random weapons dealer.

Aura and Semblance:
Onyx (#353849)

Avouth Nei Preah* - Mao is able to control aura outside of his body in the form of two tentacle-like appendages that extend up to 12 feet(~3.7m) in length with their tips as sharp as needles and have a 2 inch(~5.1cm) radius at their bases. These appendages are the same color as his aura and sit at about 30% opacity. Because his aura control is relatively poor, Mao loses about 10% of his aura just activating his semblance making it difficult to use repeatedly. The tentacles themselves make up about 15% of his aura each. Any damage done to the tendrils is a direct hit to his aura supply and any parts of the tendrils that are cleanly cut off dissipate immediately. They recover automatically regardless of Mao's will at the cost of whatever percent of aura was cut off due to his poor semblance control. If the appendages are cut at their respective bases (at the shoulder-blades), then the 15% of aura that they make up is lost. The appendages are as tough as iron.
