Title: First Year 1v1 bracket- Round 1: Samantha Quartz vs. Camelia Sol
Post by: Skylia on July 19, 2018, 10:21:25 AM
“Good afternoon friends, competitors, and sponsors alike and welcome back to the forty-first bi-annual Vytal Festival tournament!” a refined and silvery female voice would say through the arena’s sound system, sounding increasingly annoyed at having to repeat the same part of the script every match. "Today we have an intense match between two Beacon...students.” Twitching with anger at the thought of the entire first year 1v1 bracket being from Beacon, Prim would push her script to the side of the desk and continue. They didn’t get paid enough for this anyways. ”In this match we have Samantha Quartz, whose echolocation ability makes sense considering she looks like she lives in a cave. We also have Camelia Sol whose gravitational semblance will surely affect that big chest of hers.” Surprised her mic didn’t immediately get cut, Prim would motion towards Hunter to introduce the environmental spinner.

Briefly surprised by Prim, Hunter had an uneasy grin as Prim basically took Hunter’s role as the announcer duo. ”Eh? Isn’t that a little too harsh?” However, Hunter saw an amazing opportunity as his grin easily turned shit-eating. ”Or maybe you’re a little jealous because you’re lacking in some areas?” Quickly (and hopefully) diverting attention away from his little comment, he screams in excitement, ”LET’S GET READY TO RUUUUUUUUUUUMBLE!” As Hunter just sentenced himself to death, a sound system breaking ”I’M VERY COMFORTABLE WITH MY SIZE, TH-” could be heard before the mics were inevitably cut for the 100th time during this tournament.

A large holographic image of a lottery machine appears on all sides of the arena, with two spinners. The spinners spun so quickly, making it nearly impossible to make out the passing words. It ticked through the options slower and slower until it finally stopped on Swamp and Ice.

The floor of the arena lowered and, in its place, arose two new floors. On Samantha’s side, the area would be difficult to traverse. Murky water would take up most of the arena, and what isn’t water is mud or trees. As for Camelia, the entire floor was filled with ice, as ice pillars of varying sizes and shapes stand tall.

As the spinner finished its job and faded away, the doors on each side of the arena opened to signify the start of the match.

(A coin flip has decided that Camelia will get the first post. The arena size is identical to that of the 1v1 arena in the show, however, it features scaled down biomes to fit the size. Good luck, and may the best combatant win.)

Camelia jumped in place a bit, even with her gear's significant weight. Yes, she was nervous. Of course she would be. This was her first participation in the Vital festival, after all. A competition watched by pretty much everyone and their mother throughout the four Kingdoms and even beyond. Speaking of which, wh-

Her thoughts were immediately cut short at the announcer's comment. Nervousness? Fuck that trash heap, she just wanted to break some teeth right about now.

Thankfully, the other announcer took care of applying some burn in her stead, allowing her to get back to the matter at hand; namely, the match. She looked at the spinners as they slowed down, landing on 'swamp' and 'ice'. Well then, that's quite the mashup.

Taking out Orion and half of Unity, she stepped forward and onto the time, being careful to have firm footing at all times. Since she wasn't exactly a ranged type, she just slowly moved forward, using her shield and any ice formation large enough as cover.

Despite keeping her vision on her opponent throughout the announcers' speech, Samantha's ear flicked under her drawn-up hood at the statement about her - come on, she'd at least put a tiny amount of effort into style for once, in that she... couldn't think of something that she did over the norm, really. Eye visibly twitching at her own failure to come up with anything, she slid into a more flexible stance, waiting for the battle to start as the field changed around her.

The sudden appearance of a swamp under her feet didn't cause any particularly fond emotions for the event so far, admittedly. At least the commentator revealed something useful, though; Camelia had a semblance involving gravity. 'Now, whether that means localised, projected, or self-cast...' She mused, but judging by the slow but steady marching forwards of her opponent, it would be best to keep at least some distance; and she could manage that, with both of the playing fields here left her theoretically more mobile thanks to her chains.

Quickly latching on to a tree behind her, she pulled herself off her feet and backwards onto a branch, drawing herself away from her opponent and trying to get at least out of sight before drawing Ashen Howl off her back. Whether the theory of having a ranged advantage would hold up if that semblance let her opponent leap about, she didn't know. 'Either way, it should give me some time to at least get in a few potshots and gain some information.' She'd be able to tell where her opponent was if they got close, even if they took cover; and she had the advantage of non-monochromatic terrain to hide in over this side.

As Camelia edged ever closer to the demarcation between the two sides of the arena, she sheathed Unity as quietly as possible - might not do much against someone with echolocation but trying's better than nothing - and crouched down behind her shield as she went, ending up with her entire body behind it.

Now, there was no way in hell she'd move into the swamp area. That terrain was beyond stupid to intentionally fight in. She hadn't seen her opponent, either, which made her suspect that 1) she was a mostly ranged assailant 2) she had some form of protection from the mobility-hampering terrain. In all cases, fighting her there would never turn out well for Camelia.

So she just waited at the edge of the terrains, solidly camped on the ice, on her knees. She merely had to raise her head a bit to glance over Orion.

Samantha took the time to set her rifle out, eyes narrowing from her position as a little spot of brown showed against the blue-white background. Her opponent had taken point and didn't seem particularly inclined to move from her position behind their shield - and if that was the case, she'd take the brief reprieve. Loading a cartridge of dust rounds into Ashen Howl, she pushed her semblance into the charging round, taking aim through the scope.

The fox faunus still wasn't admittedly the best shot - she could hit relatively close with snap shots at closer ranges, now, but it still wasn't anything to write home about. However, a sitting target, with time to set up? Even she wasn't that bad. Though the confidence her opponent displayed just using the shield as cover was a little off-putting, however; there was probably some gimmick to it in that case, though that was the same for a majority of hunter weapons.

Nonetheless, Samantha had chosen one of her disabling cartridges to test her opponent with, rather than anything relying solely on firepower; alternating ice and gravity rounds. While demolitions and smashing down walls in her path was her usual technique, there was no point wasting stamina if it wasn't going to have an effect, and she'd have better luck hitting the more focused shots if her opponent had hampered movement in some way. She took the first shot of the match, the sound itself subdued to a dull click by the charging effect of her semblance. The bullet would release a burst of frigid wind, a cluster of ice forming around the impact itself - and Samantha had aimed it just to the side of the shield, hoping to catch either that or her opponent's feet in the ice.

As Camelia glanced over the shield, a wave of freezing air washed over her her from the right, accompanied by a small detonation and the formation of ice. Damn, she hadn't thought about that kind of long-range attack. Now Orion and her feet were frozen in place, but that wasn't exactly much to worry about. Now she also knew her opponent's position, as well, since she'd been looking when the bullet (was that really a bullet?) came. With a slight effort, she ripped Orion free, then brought it down in force, smashing through the ice enclosing her feet. She just really couldn't afford to wait anymore, not with splash damage being a risk. Orion was good, but it didn't surround her body.

She switched Orion to its secondary form and, after making sure she was aligned with the water's surface, used one of the shield's Ice charges. A large portion of the swamp froze almost instantly with loud cracking sounds. Basically, she had three options: get up close right now (a bad idea), force the terrain to her advantage (good, but the less tricks people know, the better - it would also be straining) and finally, flushing the ranger out. She'd opted for the latter option.

Checking from her position above how the ice affected her opponent, Samantha halted for a moment as she re-aimed the shot as Camelia moved forward before firing out another round. The gravity dust rounds had an interesting effect with her semblance; the resultant shockwave briefly made the target weightless, causing them to briefly hover in the air and be vulnerable to another attack - useful with her ice rounds, as they often got stuck straight after since they were unable to run off,

The resultant wave of ice erupting from the Sheila gave her brief pause, before quickly launching off two more rounds - uncharged ice and gravity rounds, each just causing a small burst of the resulting element on hit - and then once again wrapping her chains around a different tree branch, relying on the bullets to keep her opponent distracted in one way or another to try and stay at range for now. Hopefully, the gravity round would help find out a bit about her opponent's semblance, depending on how they reacted to it.

Camelia barely had the time to propel herself forward before she turned weightless, momentarily confusing her since her semblance wasn't active - wait, hold on... Yep, it wasn't. For now, she (un)gracefully floated along the ice at a leisurely pace, climbing a teensy bit in altitude as she went. She'd use her semblance if she was about to go over the edge, but for now, this actually provided extraordinary cover, since she could tuck herself right behind Orion and was just far enough away from the ground to not really be affected by any shots like she'd just received.

Didn't keep her opponent from taking a few more shots, though. One round cracked the ice underneath her and the other bounced off her shield. Still, the shots weren't exactly hidden, so once she dropped back to the ground, Camelia ran to the ice's edge closest to her target and used one of Orion's Fire charges. The air briefly seemed to shimmer like water before most plants caught in the heat caught fire.

Her opponent seemed to stumble for a second, but quickly got back to their senses, managing to make their way around quite proficiently - somewhat suspiciously so. Noting the action down, Samantha kept dragging herself away from the first year with her large shield. She was quickly thankful for it, as Camelia rapidly brought themselves to the ground and shot what she could only call a plume of fire, plants setting alight from the shimmering heat. Cursing briefly at being caught in the edge of it, with even that much being enough to sting, she dragged herself back further, using up what she could of the swamp's trees while they still remained and loaded in another cartridge.

This particular ammunition was probably her favourite with Ashen Howl, if only for the fireworks - emphasis on fire. The fire dust rounds sent out a burst of flame around their impact site, and their destructive force - while spread out over an area - was still great for demolitions, especially with the shockwave a charged shot let out. Her speciality. Taking what little time she had, she used the charge she'd built up over her backwards movement, and fired out three rounds; one charged, and two uncharged fire rounds towards her opponent.

As a bunch of foliage burst into flames, a metallic glint attracted Camelia's attention to the very side of the blaze. By the time she looked, she only saw what looked like a chain move past, but there'd definitely been movement. Well, not that she needed to stick around any longer, anyway. The flora would consume itself in due time, she just had to retreat to the more hospitable terrain that lay behind her.

Going back into a prone position, she made Orion go back into its normal form while keeping it between her and the enemy. Which didn't sit still, either; Before she knew it, a loud clang resonated from the other side of the shield, quickly followed by a quantity of flames. The impact knocked her down, exposing her for just long enough to get caught by another bullet.

Camelia quickened her withdrawal behind the ice pillars, entirely covered by her shield and ready for any other impacts or indirect fire.

Samantha paused again, though channelled her semblance into her rifle once more, musing on the situation. Camelia really was fighting incredibly defensively and reactively in comparison to what she'd expected. She wouldn't complain too much, though; it did work for her. She was far enough away to avoid any immediate threat from the flames - the sodden bark of the trees helping to slow its progress - but at the same time, they were locked in a bit of a stalemate right now. That didn't mean she wasn't going to milk the situation for all it was worth, though.

Switching out the cartridge, she took her time to line up the shot this time, before firing out a highly charged kinetic dust round. Kinetic dust helped to direct the whole of her semblance's blast in one direction, being the direction of the bullet, and she'd waited a while to charge up this one. Not a big area like her others, but it was perfect for direct hits. Considering her opponent was stationary and deliberately ready to try and block attacks... well, she'd find out why her speciality was general destruction, at least.

Camelia was patiently waiting behind a pillar, shield between the ice and herself, still crouching. Whatever the gun her opponent had was, it'd made her that much more careful of things.

She was about to stretch her legs when, at almost the exact same time, an ear-deafening crack and an even louder clang resounded, during which period she was outright thrown back. After the surprise had passed, she propped herself up onto her elbows.

Movement brought her attention forward. The pillar which was - or rather, had been - her cover lurched downwards, its weakened point collapsing with a crush, before it  started to lurch.

Towards her.

Scrambling, she took her shield back in hand and rolled to the right as fast as she could, narrowly avoiding the massive chunk of frozen water which split itself into pieces upon impact with the ground. She quickly checked to make sure she was still behind some cover, which she was, and resumed her previous position, albeit this time solidly camped onto her feet. What the hell is up with that girl's weapon?

Samantha looked on with a keen eye for the effect of the shot - which looked like it had come up short, hitting the pillar. The sudden tilting and crash towards them gave a little grin to her face, but with it looking to have little to no effect, she cursed quietly. It gave Camelia a chance to-

And her opponent still hadn't moved at all. And it didn't look like the shot had done particularly much this time around, really. Well, if Camelia really wasn't going to take the initiative, she could just... kind of sit here, really. Her semblance could continuously charge up, especially in her blades, as she started doing - holstering Ashen Howl and simply storing up energy into Prismatic Performance's twin blades. If she was determined to play that defensively, then she'd just do her own thing.

As stable as she could make herself, crouched behind Orion, Camelia patiently waited for the fire to do its thing.

...And she waited.
And waited.
And waited some more.

Alright, what the hell was taking so long? Ever so carefully, she leaned over until she had the fire in sight. Said fire was busy burning at a snail's pace.

Alright, fuck this. She was not about to wait for three fucking hours for the fire to do its job.

Back in her defensive position, she looked around for anything to use. After all, she wasn't exactly a ranged fighter, but she could probably jury-rig something good enough given - oh. A large grin spread across her face when she found just the thing to use. Camelia started concentrating and not even a second later, the crashed ice pillar was surrounded by a dark, violet glow before it started to float upwards without a sound.

Continuing to charge energy into the blades, Samantha started slowly spinning the blade around on the edge of its chain, building up more and more velocity on the sword. Conscious of the fire getting closer, she took a brief glance over to the burning swamp - luckily impeded by how wet the area was - and then back to-

Ah. Yea, that slowly floating pillar might be an issue. That was a fairly big pillar at that. Well, she had forewarning and the height advantage, at least. The fact Camelia wasn't just levitating the tree she was on or something like that suggested the range was limited, too - though nonetheless the capacity was impressive. That was a big chunk of ice, after all. But she had options, and the knowledge of the supposed attack-to-be - and the advantage of her position being somewhat hidden. She'd wait, and react, take a page out of her opponent's book. No reason to reveal any cards yet.

The pillar slowly came to a floating halt upon reaching the ice "forest"'s ceiling, its course wholly uninterrupted.

...Alright, everything was going well so far. Only one thing left. Camelia briefly glanced past her cover, half her face barely emerging from it, before resuming her previous position. Okay, now she had a pretty good idea of exactly where the latest shot had come from - or at least, which tree it roughly concerned. Taking into account the distance, she aimed her semblance and began charging a burst, the purple taint surrounding the seemingly weightless intensifying as she did so.

Just... a little bit more... and Samantha was satisfied with the charge inside Ashen Howl. The blades were practically vibrating in her hands at this point, making her palms feel a little numb, but she kept a grip on tight around the twinned swords. Now to just wait for her opportunity.

Seeing the purple shimmer around the makeshift projectile concentrate, she took a quick glance behind her before pushing back off the tree, doing what she could to sneak around a little in the last bits of foilage on her side and try to get out of any immediate danger. Getting a bit closer for a counterattack wouldn't hurt, either. Her echolocation wouldn't work while she had this much charge in her semblance, but at the same time, meant she should be quiet, if not silent in her movements.

In a soundless pulse of colour, the ice pillar started moving. Within half a second, it had reached over 115 kilometres an hour and rocketed towards its target in a ballistic trajectory. Camelia, meanwhile, felt the strain on her reserves but was now free to concentrate on something else.

As careful as ever, she peeked around the right of her cover, partly to see if the projectile would hit and partly to get a read on her opponent's whereabouts.

'Right, just- jesus fuck!

Samantha blinked for a moment as the pillar suddenly started moving, before yelping, pushing herself to the ground - and still getting buffeted by the storm of ice brought along with it, rolling backwards along the ground. Cursing as she got splashed around in the swamp, she got to her feet - clothes dripping dirty water - and growled quietly. That was gonna take ages to wash out.

Chains slinking forward, she started propelling herself onwards, pulling forward between the trees Attack-on-Titan style (and she was not humming the theme, no matter what anyone said), rocketing out of the swamp area and towards Camelia.

Taking a gander from behind her cover, Camelia observed the pillar travel in a steady arc, overshooting the enemy who'd managed to drop right to the ground in time and utterly obliterating a few trees in the process. Still, it wasn't a total loss; some of the ice splintered off on impact and caught the sniper girl. Which, as she was half-expecting, started rocketing towards her.

What she didn't expect, though, was that she was using four chains as limbs with which to launch herself between the trees. This... wasn't exactly good.

Getting out of cover, Camelia stood up, took a solid stance and brought her right hand to half of Unity, getting it out of its sheath while Orion reconfigured into a parabola. Only thing left to do now was to wait for her opponent to come into range. She didn't really have much choice in the matter; with four chains AND arms and legs, there was a strong risk of being overwhelmed in CQC even if she switched Unity's form.

Flinging herself forward, Samantha glanced at her opponent as they held their ground, waiting for them. The fact they weren't trying to back off meant they at least had some kind of idea on defense - and if the blasts from the shield as seen earlier were any indication, those tended to be quite powerful in a cone. Unless she could dodge out of the way - which was difficult when trying to get up close as she was - she'd need to weather the storm long as she could before knocking the attack off target. Even if there wasn't a sudden blast, there was certainly a need to surprise and overwhelm in the first attack now, considering how much waiting she'd been doing. This would be the best opportunity she'd have to get off a strong attack, with her opponent waiting there and ready to counter.

Placing the blades of Prismatic Performance together, the two chains not in use to swing her out of the swamp snaked towards Camelia, and then around, trying to provide some sort of entrapment that might give her a chance to catch them off guard if they backed off. Staccato and Encore made a mechanical noise as the two combined together, before a horrendous screeching noise echoed around the arena as Samantha brought the now-chainsword downwards, the charged sonic energy around it making a horrible racket.

Okay, so her opponent showed absolutely no signs of slowing down. Good. For now, she let her close in, not failing to notice the metallic glints almost hidden by the foremost pillars.

As the chain-led girl neared, her swords combined and promptly emitted a horrendous, skin-crawling screech that sounded lik metal plates scraping against quartz pebbles. Truly a bad sound if there ever was one. The swords, or sword, rather, was brought down upon Camelia, who went down on one knee to receive the blow properly, initiating Orion's firing mechanism right as the attack hit it, unleashing a crackling wave of electricity as one of the Lihgtning Dust charges was consumed. To add to it, in prevision of the girl having been stunned, she deployed her semblance in front of herself, encapsuling the chain wielder and a good portion of its surroundings in a faint purple glow.

Samantha grinned behind her mask as the sword impacted, blades grinding against the shield heavily as her opponent attempted to counteract the hit. The sudden burst of electricity led her to bring the chains down to bear against the shield, acting as miniature lightning rods - she'd long since done what she could to insulate the connectors, and despite the sting she'd feel it wouldn't be nearly as dangerous as if it hit directly - before following up by taking those electrified chains and attempting to stab them into Camelia, a small burst of her semblance behind the sword attempting to shove the weapon downwards again. Whichever way they moved, they should be able to get them into a trap.

The purple glow around them gave them pause, but they pressed on, making sure to divert one chain into the ground instead - sure, losing a bit of damage, but having a bit of a backup plan if they were shot like a bullet.

Unexpectedly, the electricity blast didn't have much more of an effect than usual - whatever was controlling those chains, it either had nothing to do with electronics or was utterly shielded. Aaand Camelia now had to deal with more incoming attacks, the chains that'd been holding the enemy up now speeding towards herself. But hey, not everything was bad news! Her target was still in her semblance's charging zone!

For now, though, Camelia pressed forward a bit while angling her shield to the side and back. As Orion returned to its convex shape, the opponent's blades slid right off while the shield's owner took the opportunity to roll to the front right, avoiding most attacks - a chain still found its mark. While this kerfuffle was ongoing, Camelia's semblance activated, turning the chain-wielder's surrounding gravity into twice the norm.

Ending her roll, she kept her shield close as she looked for the results of her semblance's effects.

Yelping as a sudden weight pressed down on her, Samantha staggered for a moment as Camelia rolled. She was glad she'd sent one chain to ground herself, using it to avoid completely falling on her ass- and levelling a glare at the other woman from beneath the mask. That semblance was annoyingly versatile. Giving off a grunt, she attempted to steady herself on the spare chain, swinging her arm backwards in a haphazard slash up from the ground where the sword had crashed into, trying to buy some time from her off-balanced state.

The higher gravity didn't help things. At least, she thought it was, considering her opponent's previous actions - but didn't have too much time to mull it over, instead using one of the chains to forcefully yank the weapon forwards, building up a little more speed and attempting to make her opponent fall back if she could. The two spare chains were rattling as they moved, but had to be brought back around from their attack still.

As her opponent adjusted to her newfound predicament, Camelia looked at her options, keeping her shield at the ready. Since the enemy was still standing still, or at least not moving from her position, she started charging a pulse, the already purple air changing to a darker shade.

Apart from that... There were still some Dust left in Orion, so she could resort to it if needed, but for now, she decided to slowly decrease the gap, staying mindful of all the chains and keeping ready to deflect/parry/defend from any incoming attack. After all, she'd run out of Dust eventually and if she was to get in some hits, she needed to be closer.

Two chains snaked their way towards Camelia as she approached, looking like they were going in to attempt an attack but instead swinging around at a slightly slower pace than before to try and hit her back. The gravity did make them harder to manipulate, but she could still swing them about with less control and some more force.

The woman grunted, before another small burst of semblance suddenly set the blade spinning around at high speeds. Steadying her grip with her other two chains, she took advantage of the increased gravity this time and attempted to do an arcing swing sideways and down at Camelia, using the previous momentum to practically chuck herself and the whirring blade at her opponent.

Having kept an eye out for all of her opponent's limbs, Camelia was able to dodge the chains coming at her back relatively easily. However, her enemy's main weapon proved much harder to fend off - even though she swung Orion into the attack to deflect it, she wound up knocked around a bit, the chain-wielder not only successfully closing in but also escaping her previously charging burst zone.

Not one to give up easily, she let go of her currently-charging burst and started another one at her target's new location. Everything wasn't so bad, though; she was still under 2 g and, added bonus, was now almost close enough to strike directly. Camelia approached further.

Her opponent having had blocked all her previous blows, Samantha guessed that the swing she now threw at her opponent again - using the momentum of the previous knockback to swing the blade around without needing her semblance in the lower gravity - would be similarly blocked. And if that was the case...

Throwing the chains again at her opponent's back, she changed their path just as they were about to hit - looking to circle and yank upwards at her opponent's arms. Swinging the sword forwards as this happened, she got ready to finally release the charged-up burst in Prismatic Performance, but waiting to see if the slash actually hit first before letting it go.

- Aaaaaah, fuck. This was unpleasant. The chains had come around her back again but this time, she'd tried to yank her arms up. The arm carrying Orion hadn't risen too much due to the shield's sheer weight, but it still made her uncomfortably exposed.

See, the whole issue with the fight so far was that it was fairly conservative. Samantha was many things - fairly lazy, for one. She preferred getting things done quickly if at all possible and go back to kind of dawdling about in a somewhat awkward fashion. So, in this case, a long and drawn out battle was beginning to work against her - she'd gotten in some pokes at the start, and now she was being weighed down quite literally by Camelia's semblance. So, she made a decision.

She had a fair amount of aura, and a helluva lot of built up charge. It would hurt like bugger, but...

Instead of making any major movement to get away or counter the attack, Samantha pulled herself forward towards her opponent with the chains, charging what she could into the sword to prepare for the next step. This lead to her hitting the floor in a fairly haphazard position as she placed her sword above her, Unity getting a fairly solid hit in on her as she let out a gasp from the hit to her side. Prismatic Performance blocked what Samantha could of the attack, but it was still a powerful gravity-enhanced blow. However, this also left the hilt of the weapon touching against her opponent directly. Focusing herself despite the pain at her side, she released the entirety of the built up sound into one singular point, creating a sudden loud booming noise and causing a powerful wave of force to blast outwards, aiming to send it directly into her opponent - she'd taken the hit to get into point-blank range for this, after all.

(Combined damage from Unity and fall: -25% aura (10% fall, 15% blocked hit), Semblance charge into Prismatic Performance: -9% stamina, Sound Cannon: -34% held charge, -40% aura, possible disorientation/damage on landing, large knockback)

As her semblance activated and Unity came crashing down onto her opponent, Camelia was content with her strike - a fleeting emotion if there ever was one, as it disappeared the moment she noticed the chainblade's hilt touching her, right beneath Orion. It was too late to react.

A moment later, an incredibly powerful detonation occurred, sending Camelia flying into a nearby pillar and nearly - nearly - making her lose focus of her semblance, causing the field to flicker for an instant. Thankfully, she'd learned to manipulate momentum to her advantage while in freefall and was able to orient Orion towards the prograde direction, crashing right through an ice pillar before receiving herself with a rapid roll.

That HURT. A lot. But hey, good news! Wait, no, bad news. The enemy had gotten serious. Now, Cammie wasn't one to just take it - she'd give it her all too. Crouching behind her shield, she started charging a gravity well - right at the chain-squid's location, a sphere about a foot in diameter turning a dark purple around her waist.

On the plus hand, she was barely still in range to use her semblance.

Samantha took the few seconds of reprieve she got as the enemy was fired off into the air to recover from the heavy blow. Picking herself up to her feet, she shook her head to attempt to clear it from the light ringing - both the hit and the booming sound had left her a bit woozy for a moment - before levelling eyes on her opponent again. She still felt heavy under the effect of Camelia's semblance, and had to use her chains to support herself where she-

The fuck was that?

Tilting her head at the appearance of the ominous-looking orb being created, she considered for just a moment, before nodding. Nope.

Good news! Her enemy was still under the effect of her semblance. Bad news; she had good instincts. Maybe Camelia was a bit too used to her semblance's preliminary signs? She even heard the girl say 'nope' before using all of her chains to slowly drag herself away.

Dammit. Her semblance was already really close to its maximum range and with how much she had to concentrate for a gravity well, she could only inch closer. It wasn't much, but it might just give her those few precious instants she needed. Once she had it going, it'd be her win.

And it was still glowing on her. Nope nope nope. Something about that thing felt way too ominous, especially the fact her opponent seemed to be focusing entirely on it.

Realising she needed a proper way to get back from the oncoming... thing, she frowned, then used up more of her precious little reserves of her semblance, filling it out into her longsword and focusing for a moment, dragging it against the floor before slicing forward and firing off a shockwave - launching her backwards, and an attack towards Camelia. As she focused on the task at hand, Camelia was barely aware of her surroundings, save for the fact that she was slowly and steadily inching forward with as solid a stance as she could maintain while crouched behind Orion. She didn't have too long left, eith---

With a loud clang that briefly reverberated onto the frozen surroundings, the shield shielded its owner from a shockwave, her solid since helping to diffuse the impact. Incidentally, the wait was now over.

The purple sphere hovering in the air turned almost opaque and, with a roar, sent the local gravity haywire. Air rushed while the ice floor cracked and broke apart, shards of all shapes and sizes ripped out of it by the tidal forces. Everything close by was being dragged towards the epicenter. The closest pillar emitted a loud, cracking noise as its stability became severely compromised. All Camelia did was stop moving forward and hunker down under the cover of the large, circular metal assembly that was her rampart from unmitigated chaos.

Feeling a sudden burst of force pushing- no, pulling her towards the orb, Samantha cursed as the gravity well tried to yank her forwards, the backwards momentum of the shockwave from earlier being quickly overwhelmed. She'd managed to get a small distance from it with that last stunt, but damn if it didn't hurt just being near it. Snagging two chains far back s she could, the other two struggled against the purple ball's pull for a moment before following suite - but not before taking long enough for Samantha to get pelted with several pieces of ice, cursing to herself as she dragged herself more worse for wear away from the attack.

Further pieces of debris started flying around dangerously, so she criss-crossed two chains in front of her to try and protect herself from what she could. She would have rather kept some things a bit more hushed for later rounds, but her opponent really showed that they weren't playing around any more, and she shouldn't hold anything back either. She doubted her opponent could rush through... whatever that was, and she sure as hell wasn't getting anywhere near it again after the damage she took. Instead, she took the brief reprieve to activate her SCF, the faint hum of white dust within, and started loading charge into a palmed crystal of the same, removing it from its container.

Camelia briefly peeked out from behind Orion, just to check how everything was going. It took more than just a glance, though, since the amount of concentration she had to use to keep the well active was no joke. Hmm. Seemed like the enemy was definitely caught, at least.

With a resounding crack that reverberated throughout the ice section of the arena, enough that Camelia felt it in her feet, the pillar snapped close to its base and didn't just fall, but accelerated towards the cause of its toppling. After reaching speeds which, simply put, are just too damn high for something so large, it turned into several tons of ice shards in mere moments as the tidal forces shredded it apart, sending most of it back out as a uniform, spherical(ish) explosion of the entire pillar's worth in ice shrapnel.

Samantha may have had her hearing muted during the charging phase of her semblance, but once that pillar started falling she didn't need to hear it - it was large enough she simply felt the damn thing flying downwards. Having a little distance from it, she yelped loudly nonetheless, the two chains she was shielding with joined by one sword of Prismatic Performance in her spare hand as she tried to get distance from the pillar and slowly circle around the gravity well from where she was. Even so, at the speed it was going, chunks of ice flew out everywhere, some narrowly missing her and other shards hitting against her shield or the less protected parts of her body - at the very least, little broken-off pieces still stung when they hit, let alone the few larger bits that got through.

Frustrated now at the well and all the issues it was causing, she took a second to re-focus, taking a deep breath and just throwing more of her dwindling energy into her semblance's charging of the dust crystal in her hands. She didn't have much aura or, honestly, stamina left at this point; the sudden intensity had started to wear out on her, and according to the monitors on her opponent as well. In this situation, one good hit would probably mean winning or losing, and despite her normal lazy attitude this fight had really got her blood pumping; she was enjoying it, and she wanted to win it.

Weathering the - quite literal - ice storm without much effort, Camelia peeked from behind her shield again. Damn. The match hadn't stopped and her opponent was still hanging on (presumably) for dear life. This called for some more... involved measures.

For the first few instants, nothing changed. After about half a second, the well slowly accelerated, although all that could be seen was that the raging ball of ice shards, chunks and other partially lethal paraphernalia was moving; the well itself was obscured. Nevertheless, it began making steady progress towards Camelia's target, closing in the gap at the blistering speed of half a foot a second, ripping up more of the floor as its tidal forces pulled on undamaged portions. Still concentrating, she began preparing to launch it towards the enemy if they made an escape attempt.

'Yea, no.' Samantha thought, eyes widening as the storm of gravity started crawling towards her. Now the storm of shards weren't so thick, and she'd bought herself a little distance from the vortex, she moved one of the spare chains backward, then tugging herself away from the... thing. She then repeated the action with the other chains, moving a little like a spider away from it - if a spider had drunk a human-sized portion of vodka, maybe, but still moving away from it. More importantly, she was circling around it; trying to get out of the direct line of fire from the storm, and into direct line of fire to Camelia. She'd still have the shield to block anything, which was an issue, but at least she'd stand a chance that way.

Watching her opponent, Camelia saw that she stopped using her chains as a shield in order to have a better... uh, traction? What surprised her, however, was that the enemy managed to, excruciatingly slowly, move out of the way of her gravity well and was in the process of circling around it. As impressive as it was to resist the pull, no. No, you were not. Camelia promptly enacted her contingency plan in the event of a successful(result pending) escape attempt and the gravity well suddenly shot forward right towards the chain wielder, dragging a slew of broken ice behind itself.

Camelia took a deep breath almost out of reflex, the strain and concentration necessary for maintaining the well gone.

There wasn't really much time for thought. There wasn't any way she could block the attacks Camelia was using, and she couldn't just dodge at the speed it was going - not normally. The meagre dregs of her semblance wouldn't be able to provide a large enough boost, either, even using all of what remained. So she reacted on instinct, instead.

The crystal in her hand glowed for a moment before she released the held charge beneath and in-front of her, a momentary feeling of power coursing through her hands before a kinetically amplified beam of sound shot out in that same direction, firing her upwards and away from the well. The whiplash certainly stung as she was shot back just enough to get out of the radius, and then some - coming to rest on the ceiling forcefield of all things, letting out a rush of breath as she pressed against it - but the beam slammed into the ground in front of where she'd been, swivelling forwards towards Camelia as Samantha had released the built-up energy to get herself away. The beam itself would only scrape her, most of the force used to shove herself away from the speeding deathtrap; but what would hit her was all the ice and rocks that had been built up in the well, along with a good chunk of the disturbed ground where the gravity well had made its path towards her, all shot out in a wave of sound, rubble and ice towards the other woman.

Damn, that had worked better that she'd hoped, even if the beam didn't hit with the full force and instead fired slower chunks. Now, why was she feeling all woozy, and where was the floor?

Quite honestly, Camelia didn't think dodging her well was feasible at such ranges. Unless you took drastic measures, like using a suitable semblance to propel yourself out of the way or something equally extreme, as just attempting to move out of the way normally would get you nowhere but within the well's pull real quick-like. Turns out, she was right. but also wrong, as her enemy shot out a beam of shockwave directly underneath herself, rocketing upwards as the ground below erupted into a mix of ice, rock and debris.

A fair portion of the ejecta immediately turned towards the well as it whizzed past, replacing the stuff that'd been previously trailing it but whose motions were disrupted by the boom. The rest of the flying dirt, rocks and ice surged preferentially towards Camelia in a veritable tidal wave of due brown with grey spots. She barely had the time to turn Orion into its secondary form and fire off a shockwave of its own before it reached her. The shockwave sent out by the shield managed to either stop dead or push back most of what it encountered, but the parts of the wave closest to her and slightly to the sides being outside of its range, they continued unhindered, pummeling her as they came to a gradual halt.

After a brief moment, Camelia shook off her daze and looked at the closest screen displaying both combatants' Aura. She felt both relieved and worried from what she saw; she was still in the yellow, but her opponent's Aura bar was comepletely empty. She rapidly scrambled out of the dirt mund now surrounding her, fumbling a bit as she did so.

As Orion took back its standard form, Camelia started striding to where her (now ex-) enemy lay. Hanging her shield on her back, she realized the sheer amount of destruction that'd been wrought upon the arena: over half of the frozen side was torn apart one way or another, dirt and ice mixing in a chaotic combo while pillars were sprawled on the ground like so many fallen trees. A good portion of the other side's marsh was frozen solid and what hadn't been pulverized by the giant chunk of ice Camelia threw earlier was almost entirely on fire.

Navigating the terrain proved mildly difficult, but she eventually made it to the girl's side. Careful to not get on the chains, she knelt down besides her, rather worried. "Hey, uh, you okay?

There was a slight whine from where Samantha was laying in the crater she'd made on impact. She didn't seem to be particularly responsive, but enough to at least give off that in response. She'd landed on her heavier side - the metal side of her body - and though it had shielded most of her actual body from harm, there were several small shards sticking out from a damaged back implant and, more urgently, the wiring and plating down her right arm seemed to have been damaged along with the arm underneath, if the small trails of blood and the odd angle it was at were anything to go by. The rest of her was still in rough shape, but it looked like the remaining aura shielded the fall somewhat - she'd be flat as a pancake otherwise, instead of broken ribs and an arm. Still, it wasn't exactly pretty - but still better than being caught in the centre of that gravity well.

One way or another, though, she was down for the count.

Okay, good, she was relatively unharmed considering the possibilities. Camelia quickly gathered the chains sprawled about in as little piles as possible, then applied her semblance to the volume containing and surrounding the whole of the girl's body. After a small delay, she turned weightless and Camelia gently lifted and pushed her along towards the staff that was pouring out of the arena's sides. "Hold on, girl, I'm gonna get you in good hands real soon."
