”Welcome back everybody! This is the final match for the fourth year bracket, and right now. We have, ugh, Infrared Ray, a faunus,” Detest dripping from Hunter’s voice can be heard, making some non-Atlas audience members uncomfortable, ”participating in this fine tournament, and as I highly suggested before, should really leave Atlas Academy in search of better pursuits.” Hunter’s voice then became more pleasant as he introduced the other combatant. ”On the other hand, we have… God, I’m gonna butcher this... Kei Tsz Fung as our beacon participant.” Hunter’s chair creaked as he leaned back. ”Normally, this is where I would tell Prim to handle the rest of the introduction, but right now she’s not here!” Hunter gives off a nervous laugh. ”She said she’ll get us lunch, so hopefully she’ll be back soon.” The strength in his voice weakens near the end.

”Regardless of my crippling insecurity, time to spin the wheel!” A large holographic image of a lottery machine appears on all sides of the arena, with two spinners. The spinners spun so quickly, making it nearly impossible to make out the passing words. It ticked through the options slower and slower until it finally stopped on Wind Dust Field and Mountain.

The floor of the arena lowered and, in its place, arose two new floors. On Kei’s side, the area would be filled with rather smooth and rounded terrain as crystals of Wind Dust emerge from the ground. As for Infrared, small formation of stone starts to grow and grow towards the center of the arena. ”Now this is an interesting combination!” In the center would be a big mountain that is littered with wind dust crystals that can be used to traverse the mountain or even use it to launch opponents off the mountain. Other than the wind dust crystals, the mountain would feature stand offs that can be reached via careful parkour or wind dust crystals launching the combatants.

(A coin flip has decided that Kei will get the first post. The arena size is identical to that of the 1v1 arena in the show, however, it features scaled down biomes to fit the size. The wind dust crystals when used to traverse the arena will provide minimal damage of 2%, while used as a combat method would vary depending on height, impact, etc. Good luck, and may the best combatant win.)

Out of everything they could have given a pseudo-cripple to fight in, they chose a bloody mountain. At least there was what looked to be Wind Dust, something Kei recognised as being instantly useful to both competitors.

With the mountain obstructing his view of his opponent, Kei crossed over to one of the Wind Dust deposits and broke off a palm-sized fragment, tucking it away in a pocket, before unsheathing his lance in one swift motion and beginning to channel his Semblance. Glowing magenta lines appeared out of thin air, still hidden from sight of his opponent.

Kei's Combat Log:
  ● Aura: [██████████] 100%
  ● Lance Type: Steel Core
  ● Channeling Semblance
  ● Wind Dust crystal in pocket

Mountain is just a great terrain for Infrared Ray. Blocking off direct rushes at her means she gets to commence indirect fire with impunity. Which is exactly what she is going to do. On the other side is wind dust apparently, can be fun playing with her semblance if she gets to that side.

Entering the field with her wheelbarrow that stores all her ammunition for Reaction Infrared opened with firing over the mountain targeting the middle of the dust field, where she senses an aura in the proximity. Even if it is just to get her opponent to dodge anything is better than being a sitting duck while Kei sets up for an assault. After the first one fired she immediately started reloading for the next, which would aim at a different spot according to his reaction. This is the most enjoyable part of her job, as evidenced by Infrared humming her favourite tune for the occasion.

As his arm ceased moving and his Semblance formed a complete symbol, Kei could feel the familiar sensation of sturdiness that his Semblance provided. Well, almost--it was disrupted by a freaking rocket streaking past and exploding to his left, scattering fragments everywhere and bouncing off his Aura. Thankfully, he'd chosen a suitable symbol and thus had taken less damage than he would have had. Still, it was a freaking rocket, and that stuff hurt.

On the bright side, he now knew Infrared had a rocket launcher...? Yeah, no, there was nothing even remotely good about this situation. Now there were 3 options he could take to close the distance; left, right, or over the mountain. Gathering multiple Wind Dust crystals including the one currently in his possession, he dropped them in a small pile before literally stomping on them and sending him soaring over the mountain, now clearly visible to Infrared from her position below.

Kei's Combat Log:
  ● Aura: [████████-] 89% [6% from splash damage, 5% from dust explosion]
  ● Stamina: [█████████-] 95% [5% from Semblance activation]
  ● Semblance: Activated [] [20 secs remain]

Infrared had a sliver of hope that she can triangulate the position of Kei by looking at the Aura panel after each launch. But no, nobody is so dumb as to allow a rocket artillery to pinpoint their location. Especially not a semi-finalist like Kei.

As Infrared finishes reloading, she looks up to see him flying over the edge. Predictable, but probably the best course of action. Sure Infrared might take a while to come up with a better approach, but the less she gets to fire the better it is for the other side. Infrared does get to fire once more though, and against a defenseless airborne target. Free hit and she's getting to load again while he gets blown onto the mountain. As long as she is humming she is firing, so going melee is the best way to shut her up.

Predictable. Normally, what Infrared did would be perfectly acceptable as the best possible option to pressure the opponent. But the most defining point of a rocket launcher was its large explosion radius which required contact in order to trigger. And in the air, the only point of contact was him. So as long as his trajectory could be altered even a little, all the destructive might of the rocket faded into naught.

Swinging his lance-holding arm over his head to the right, Kei discharged his lance into the air with the intention of using the kinetic force gained from that pushing motion to alter his course of flight slightly to the left and downwards, with the result of the rocket zooming past his right shoulder by just a small distance. If Kei had time to analyse his situation he'd have marvelled at the degree of accuracy and the reaction time that Infrared managed even under pressure, but without the luxury of time he reloaded his lance, pulling out a new lance type and continued falling. Thanks to his trick he'd lost the ability to counterattack--by pushing himself out of the way he'd also moved himself out of striking distance--so he concentrated on landing instead, smashing into the ground and immediately rolling behind a pillar.

Kei's Combat Log:
  ● Aura: [███████--] 86% [3% from impact]
  ● Stamina: [█████████-] 95%
  ● Semblance: Activated [] [10 secs remain]
  ● Lance Type: Dust Core [Dust type unknown to Infrared]

So Kei did have some delta-v after all, which translate into ranged capabilities, even if it is just a dust blast with ranging half a meter. Good to know.

He did manage to land, which is a problem, so Infrared drawn Action with her left hand and rested Reaction on her right shoulder. Kei had already went into hiding by the time Infrared reloaded, and Infrared do not really want to play a game of hide and seek, so she left behind her ammo transporting cart after grabbing one more rocket and putting it inside one of her pockets, before hopping onto the closest pillar to her and start looking for Kei from above. Staring at the general direction from which Kei landed and is tingling the sense of hers, Infrared is ready to fire into the ground if and when he is spotted.

Kei knew that two could play at this game of hide and seek, and when Aura Detection was involved it became less of hide-and-seek and more a game of wallhacks where you couldn't report the other player. In scenarios like this, especially when his Semblance was running out, he felt it was better to just wait. With his own, albeit meagre detection, all he could feel was that Infrared was still on high ground. It was simple enough to predict what she would do if he moved from where he was, but her response to his current action (or lack thereof) would provide him with valuable information as well.

While Infrared is not exactly eager to engage in melee, if the alternative is getting ambushed then she doesn't really have a choice. She had to force his hand now. And that means firing again, probably to the annoyance of the audience.

Picking the densest column of rock in the vicinity of where he last saw Kei Infrared carefully aimed and fired at the spot where it would cause the maximum amount of fragmentation possible. Getting him in the blast would be nice but the main source of damage comes from rocks flying everywhere. That clears away the obstacles over a large area and probably forces him to move which exposes him. After the should be the melee phase, so Infrared stopped humming and readied Action with both hands.

Kei's semblance had to run out at the same time as Infrared unloaded yet another rocket in his direction. The pillar next to him exploded in a storm of shrapnel and fragments, peppering him with even more damage which Kei gritted his teeth and bore resiliently. Surprisingly there were no more attacks so Kei stepped out of his cover. While it wasn't perfectly clear where Infrared was, his aura signature indicated somewhere up on a pillar in front of him.

Assuming the pillar was too small for the both of them to stand on, Kei felt it was only fair that they fought on even ground--literally. Stabbing his lance into the rock and leaving it stuck he stood well back before revealing that it was a Combination Dust lance and blowing the pillar up. While it was unlikely to do any damage to Infrared's Aura it would very likely destroy the pillar and force him to relocate. In preparation for that he reloaded his lance handle with yet another lance.

Kei's Stats:
  ● Aura: [███████--] 80% [6% from shrapnel]
  ● Stamina: [█████████-] 95%
  ● Semblance: DEACTIVATED - 25 SECOND COOLDOWN
  ● Lance Type: Unknown Core

There he is. Infrared did not reload Reaction after that shot because she didn't have time and she's right, if she had been reloading when Kei blew the pillar from under her she would have been in trouble. But as she is right now she is prepared and so it only took her a split second to regain balance when she fell to the ground.

Recognizing an opportunity Infrared pulled back her right leg as she fall with the rocks. When she was about to make contact with the ground she kicked hard at the largest piece of shattered rock already resting at the ground, applying her semblance on it and send it flying at Kei while disguising it as an Aura enhanced kick. Between the fall and the force of the kick itself the move took a bit out of her Aura and the semblance made it like she stubbed her toe, but the power of the rock paids out. After the kick Infrared moved off the pile of rocks and onto solid ground, preparing for a good old-fashioned swordfight with her opponent.

That kick hurt more than it had any right to. While Kei had suspicions that it wasn't just a kick, he didn't have the evidence nor the time to prove so. He was going in blind for this fight, something he disliked doing but circumstances had forced most of his hand. The good news was that Infrared seemed ready to forgo her ranged weapon and fight on even terms, something Kei had been waiting for this entire fight.

Not letting up on the pressure even with the kick Kei pushed resolutely forward, leading with his right foot in a fleché. The point was calculated to land to the left of Infrared's chest--attempts at parrying would only serve to redirect the attack at her shoulder instead, unless Infrared decided to retreat. In the latter's case she would find that the fleché gave his lance a longer reach than she could hope to outrun.

Maybe Infrared should have reloaded Reaction after all, that would give her quite an advantage now that she's stuck in mostly close combat. This is pretty risky

Against the fleché Infrared had no intention of backing down and all the intention of pushing forward, since staying at a distance while being outreached is a terrible idea anyway. Infrared parried the attack to the left but when that wasn't enough to remove the blade she moved herself to the right, trying to shift inside Kei's guard. If she does manage to do that, she would pull her sword from parrying and do a couple slashes with less fear of retaliation.

Letting his momentum from the fleché carry him past the two sword slashes even as Infrared redirected his lance point, Kei deftly spun 270 degrees on his feet and brought his lance in a wide backhand swing, aiming to create a little space between the two fighters and to hit Infrared not with the point, but rather with the main body of the lance as a blunt weapon. Enough to avoid the shorter weapon's strikes. The move itself would never be seen dead in any fencing technique but he felt it was justified.

Infrared turned and pushed at the same time Kei did, letting the side of the lance hit her as close as possible so as to minimize its damage. The further inside Kei she can get the less damage she will receive. With that she stepped closer and threw more slashes at him, at his shoulder against the direction he is turning. Since she have a headstart she can just win if she keeps the damage output at a parity she can just cruise to her victory, but if it proves too difficult she might need to change her approach a bit, but she doesn't have time to consider that for now.
