Title: Blind Not-Date [CLOSED]
Post by: NotSurprised on April 15, 2019, 11:43:26 PM
Noir whistled a little tune as he made his way around the dorm’s sort of private yet small kitchen. It wasn’t heavy duty, but it served his purpose as he elegantly “danced” around the kitchen. Well. Not really a dance but more of a sense of rhythm and elegance than actual dancing. Regardless, Noir didn’t really mind since he’s pretty much alone in the dorm right now and he’s cooking up some food for his teammates since they’ll be hopping on by later. Who knows, he might even pack it up as if he was parent sending them off else with their lunch. Plus, it would do Noir some good to get familiar with what he’s given so that he doesn’t end up messing up when cooking. Twisting knobs here and there, Noir listens for the familiar cackle of the stove as he touches where the heat sources would be. With a nod, Noir would take a few minutes to feel out the levels of temperature and mark their place on the knobs just so he knows.

With everything relatively ready, Noir would begin to lean on one foot with a hand to his chin as he thinks about what he should cook for his team. He could keep it relatively simple since it’s an entirely new area for him… Well, that seemed like the plan! Noir had gone grocery shopping earlier, so he carefully organized all his ingredients to keep track mentally and started to do his thing! Frying pan, cooking oils, laying out the bacon onto the pan as he began to mentally keep track of the time within his head. Another frying pan, more oils, this time with some good ‘ol ground beef, adding that onto the timer in his head. Once again, Noir would whistle as he starts to make sure that everything was going properly while he waits for the timer in his head to finish up.

Meanwhile, in the hall outside, a pair of young women walked along in the general direction of that dorm room. Lyssa carried a stack of textbooks under one arm. Unlike her sister, she was still in uniform, and had finished her final class of the day only minutes ago.

"Mm, no. I don't want to do anything else today," the taller of the two girls said quite plainly, not looking at her faunus companion as she walked. Her expression was lacking interest, as usual.

Isabelle raised an eyebrow in response, giving her older sister a slight glare. It wasn’t often that she would shoot down the invitation to hang out so quickly. "Okayyy… What are going to do with the rest of your day then, Lyssa? You're not usually the lazy type."

"Ugh. Don't worry about me." She rolled her eyes. What would she do? Pray to whatever gods existed that nobody was at her dorm, Mira and Mithra especially. If luck was on her side, she could probably do another brief workout, and if there was still time alone after that, maybe even catch up on her studying or guitar practice. Regardless of what she might decide to do, she wanted to be alone. "I've had enough of you for one day. Go make a real friend."

It was terribly rude and dismissive of her to say, but it didn't seem to faze the cat girl much at all. She had grown accustomed to treatment like that, and she knew well that Lyssa didn’t truly mean that. Well, she kind of did… but she didn’t really have any malicious intent. That was just her idea of a joke, even if it wasn't a very good one. Knowing that, Isabelle fired back. "Y’know, that one doesn't really work anymore. I actually have friends. Unlike you." It really shouldn't have been all that amusing, but the comeback had brought the slightest of grins to Isabelle's face.

”Tch. You should be glad I don't. If I had friends, I wouldn’t be hanging out with you."

"And wouldn't that be nice?"

Lyssa didn't even know how to respond to that. It was a good one. "... You should be careful, or you're gonna start to sound like me."

Before Isabelle could retort yet again, her attention was divided by a familiar smell in the air that grew more noticeable with every step. Food being cooked… More specifically, meat. It was quite clearly coming from Lyssa's room. Noticing that Lyssa apparently hadn't picked that up yet, she decided to point it out. "... Do people usually cook in your room?" she asked with a puzzled look.

Lacking the heightened senses that her sister had, the taller woman looked even more perplexed, her pace picking up ever so slightly until they reached the door. Yep, now she could smell it.

Bacon.

"Hey, I'll see you later. Practice that stuff I showed you." Her goodbye was very sudden, but she really didn't care. After such a busy day, she was starving. All of her other plans took a backseat, and her new target was food.

Isabelle looked mildly annoyed at how eager Lyssa was to get rid of her, but she couldn't be bothered to put up with it any longer herself. "Uh… Bye. Have fun with… that." With that, the faunus simply walked away.

The door swung open and the tall woman stepped in, immediately tossing the hefty pile of books onto her bed. Her head turned and she spotted… Noir? She had been ready to fight to steal Mira's food, but much to her surprise, it was the blind guy instead. Weird.

"I'm fucking starving. Can I steal some of whatever you've got going on?" Of course, she still didn't intend to take no for an answer. It didn't occur to her that he could have been nice enough to make some for her… or that taking food from a blind person was wrong.

Noir proceeds to flip through the bacon and ground beef when the time went off in his head, making sure that both are evenly cooked and ready to be put together with the rest of the ingredients. Deciding to prepare the tortillas right now, Noir would throw some on another frying pan and twisted the knob for that too. Cleaning and sharpening a kitchen knife to prepare dicing the vegetables, Noir flinches from the sudden appearance of Lyssa within the dorm room. While she’s not unwelcome, Noir was relatively in the zone and suddenly being knocked out of his sort of scared him. His face reddens in embarrassment and sort of breathes in and out to calm himself. Now that he’s relatively calm, he turns towards Lyssa with the brightest smile ever.

”Of course! I was preparing it for you and the sisters after all!” Then Noir expression twists into a sad frown and nervously laughs as he rubs the back of his head. ”Unless you uh, didn’t care. Ha……” While somewhat saddened, Noir turns back to the vegetables and quickly diced most of them into small cubes if necessary. After all, he’s a cook and he has a job to get done. No time for distractions unless he needs to be distracted!

”You’re back early. I guess. Had a good time….?” It sounded a little awkward, but it’ll make do.

"... For me? Hell yeah, I care." Lyssa already preferred his company over that of Mira or Mithra, the irritating pair of sisters that made up the other half of their team. While the latter was only an occasional nuisance, Mira and Lyssa had a lot in common. As far as she was concerned that was most definitely not a good thing. They were incompatible.

Noir, on the other hand, was one of the few people that never really got on her nerves. He was quiet and mostly kept to himself. He didn't nag, didn't make his presence extremely obvious, and he actually seemed decently confident in himself despite his disability. She didn't really know him all that well, but she had believed he was an alright guy. But now, he had proven himself to be awesome. Nobody that she knew could actually cook, and the Beacon cafeteria food was mediocre at best. It had been at least a few days since she had smelled anything nearly as good as whatever it was that Noir was preparing. Best of all, he was doing it only because he wanted to. After this long and exhausting day, it was exactly what she needed.

"You're my favorite," she openly admitted while tossing her gym bag off her shoulder and onto the floor. It wasn't intentional, but she was always a little bit loud while going about her business. Even when she collapsed onto her bed, it made a loud creak that probably did nothing to help his concentration. "Oh, and it was lame. Like most lectures are."

Not bothering to take off her combat boots, Lyssa folded one leg over the other as she lay on her back, arms at her sides. Her body was sore all over, and it only felt more so now that she was trying to relax. That aching feeling in her muscles, along with the comfort of her bedsheets and the incredible aroma of meat, all contributed to her decision to call it a day. It wasn't easy to let go, but finally, she convinced herself to just be lazy for once. Sitting around and doing jack shit for a couple hours wouldn't hurt.

"What are you making, anyway? I'm gonna die over here waiting."

Ah. That’s good. Noir was hoping that Lyssa would appreciate his work especially since he really wanted to gift her with his cooking. However, finding that he was Lyssa’s favorite put a really big smile on his face as he turns towards where Lyssa would be. ”That’s very sweet of you, even if it probably doesn’t much!” Then Noir pauses, because maybe it did mean much. ”Or maybe it does. Hahaha….” Realizing he should probably be cooking, Noir returns to the table regardless of how loud Lyssa was being.

Cleanly moving the diced veggies to the side with his knife, Noir would return to the stove as he quickly combines the two meats while cutting and mixing them as best he could. Adding a tad bit amount of cheese and some sauces and seasonings he picked up, Noir would use his spatula to continue mix them together while he finishes up. Since it was basically menial work and just evenly heating up everything, Noir would return to the conversation.

”I see. Well. I don’t. But although boring, lectures are very important!” Noir sort of waves his spatula towards Lyssa and what could possibly be seen in a scolding manner. Although, it would quickly return to the pan so Noir can continue doing his thing. ”Since you’re wondering, I’m making some burritos since it’ll be easier to eat up for lunch. Or right now since it seems that you are rather hungry!”

Placing the pan down, and quickly moving over to the tortilla, touching it to make sure that it’s the right texture he wants, Noir removes it and places it separate plates so that he can prepare them for the team. Thankfully, cooking was his expertise and no blindness can stop him! Probably! ”If you want, I can continue to cook for you for any meal of the day. I’ll even pack it as if it’s lunch if necessary. Or not. Depends on if you think the food sucks. Or if you think a blind guy shouldn’t be cooking.” The end almost sounded a tad bit negative, with some words being said weakly, though overall it seems pretty normal.

"What, are you supposed to be our mom now?" Lyssa moved her hands behind her head, starting to undo her ponytail before letting down her mess of short, dark red hair. Once that was done, she rested the back of her head against her palms, closing her eyes. "Stick with the cooking, and less of the bossiness." She really didn't need another person in her life telling her where to place her priorities, but at the very least, Noir wasn't as annoying about it. He hadn't said much, but she wanted to stop that before it took off.

"Oh, and you're not just some blind guy. With that semblance, it's like you're not at all." That may not have been exactly true, but she didn't really know the specifics enough to tell. Judging only by the way he moved, she had to assume that he was using his seeing ability all the time, rather than only activating it sparingly. Even now, she believed he had it on. It didn't immediately occur to her just how exceptional he was, or that he was at a genuine disadvantage in life.

She recalled their first time meeting. He didn't seem blind, so she had tossed a pillow in his direction. Much to her surprise, he caught it right out of the air. That was not typical behavior for someone who couldn't see.

Noir felt conflicted. He was filled with joy, enough to put a little pop in his steps. Noir never felt so happy that someone thought he was actually competent! On the other hand, it was completely for the wrong reason. Hell, Noir was tempted to keep it that way because he wouldn’t have the heart to deal with being labelled as “a blind guy” again. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have the heart to leave Lyssa in her own self-deceptions about his capabilities either. Well. Noir is just going to have to suck it up. While cooking. With dangerous objects.

”Well… Not exactly.” Noir awkwardly coughs as he goes to voice his thoughts. ”See, my semblance, it strains me. I usually get nasty headaches, sometimes even worse.” The sizzling of the bacon quickly becomes the only thing that can be heard until Noir speaks again, much more weakily as he voices the next constraint. ”It’s not complete sight either…”

Whatever sadness Noir had left, it was gone. Noir hisses as he nearly cuts himself with the knife he was using, before moving to start distributing the meats into the tortillas. Quickly shuffling around, Noir evenly distribute the meats, then some guacamole and sour cream. Lastly, Noir sprinkles the vegetables and cheese he cut up into the burrito. Wrapping it up nicely so that nothing leaks, there are now three plates of burritos! He wraps up those burritos in a foil and puts them into a brown paper bag as he grabs the plate and sort of turns to Lyssa’s direction. Slowly walking to make sure he’s at the right place, Noir offers the plate.

”Want me to make anything to drink? I can make smoothies or…” He might as well. Noir had more things to be cooked and prepared for his team, so it would be easy to knock out any drink requests.

"Hmm. And what does that 'look' like?" The discomfort that Noir was experiencing was palpable, though it didn't appear that Lyssa had much of a reaction even while she noticed it. Despite her indifferent look, it was at least somewhat interesting to hear. It only took a few brief moments of reflection for her view of him to change; the amount of things he probably did without seeing a thing was beyond impressive. A slight grin came across her face as she realized her newfound respect for him.

Once her ears picked up what sounded like him finishing the meal, Lyssa sat up with a mikdly pained groan. "Shit, I'm hungry," she repeated, watching over him impatiently until the food finally came her way. Snatching the plate from Noir, she nodded at his next offer. "Knock yourself out."

Feeling Lyssa apprehend the meal in his hands, Noir considers the question she asked. Noir wasn’t too comfortable with what she’s asking, but it wasn’t like he was uncomfortable either. It’s like sharing your capabilities with your teammates so that they can function the best they can, though he supposes that the team is already quite dysfunctional… With what seems like a shrug, Noir would answer in a bland tone. ”Well, to begin with, colors are nonexistent and I usually get the barest details of what I see.”

Noir sort of makes what seems like investigative gestures towards Lyssa’s face, almost like he would touch her face, though definitely respecting her boundaries. ”Like… Like…” Noir frowns in frustration as he decides to take it out on the poor ingredients he’s using for the smoothie, quickly returning to the kitchen. Cleaning and cutting strawberries and bananas, Noir would continue to struggle to formulate the exact details of his ‘sight’. ”Like, it’s difficult to tell much from someone’s face. Sure I can see some of the facial structure, but I don’t…” How can he tell someone that when he looks into people’s eyes with his semblance, all he sees is empty eye sockets? Noir would shudder as he remembered the horrors that came with his ‘sight’. The first time Noir used his semblance, it almost gave him nightmares just from how… empty, everything felt with his sight. It’s almost like being blind but not. Noir would pause as he decides to branch off into something else in the topic since it’s getting slightly too uncomfortable for him. ”It’s like using your aura to probe, and you just get slightly detailed outlines I suppose. It’s hard to put into word.”

"Huh." Noir had a slightly confused look shot in his direction when he lifted his hand, but thankfully he hadn't really come close to touching her. It was odd, but he wasn't exactly normal to begin with. Initially, Lyssa didn't think much of his response. As she sat on her bed and began to tear into the first burrito, however, she had some extra time to ponder his situation. It was one that was, in many ways, unimaginable. What was a world without color? Most names on Remnant would lose their meaning. One could have color described to them, but words could never express the entire visible spectrum of light. In her eyes, a life like that would be bleak, monotone... and exceptionally boring. The same could be said about living a life lacking any of one's senses, but he had to deal with a half-baked version, and it didn't sound like it would be all that much better than being truly blind. Just enough to be able to fight, but not enough to be able to see what you're protecting…

'... Wow, this tastes really fucking good,' Lyssa's thoughts trailed off as she continued biting into the burrito. All the ingredients came together amazingly, the meal containing an almost perfect ratio of everything inside. He may have been blind, but he sure as hell could still taste just fine. She couldn't help but acknowledge it to herself as she ate, continuing to remain silent while trying to recall what she had been pondering a moment ago.

Oh, right. He is blind.

"Uhm… That's rough, buddy," she finally spoke up, having had a full mouth for quite some time up until then. The girl lightly waved the partially-destroyed burrito in his direction as she went on to make her point. "But if that's the full extent of what you can see, then that means you're a certified badass if you've gotten this far." Rarely would she openly praise anyone that much, but it was hard for her to be her usual cold and dismissive self when he was happily providing her with some of the best food that she had eaten in a long while. It definitely beat the stuff from the cafeteria, no doubt about it.

"Good-ass food, by the way." It wasn't exactly a thank-you, but it was the closest thing he had gotten out of her in the short time that they had been teammates.

Noir gives off a nervous chuckle as he cleanly sends all the cut up ingredients into the blender. ”I mean, I guess you can call me badass. I’m just average though.” It’s true too. He’s definitely not the best at fighting, and not only that but he’s average at academics as well. Noir isn’t too sure how his mediocrity makes him badass, but it feels nice that Lyssa gives him her support. Well, he’ll take it since support from Lyssa is rare.

”You’re welcome, glad to make a teammate’s day.” Noir’s offhand comment was made distractedly as he properly sets up the blender and starts doing the thing you do with blenders: blending. Counting in his head for the proper consistency as he held the blender down, his thoughts wandered elsewhere, specifically directed towards Lyssa.

She’s definitely an interesting sort, and Noir is sure he doesn’t click all too well with her. However, he’ll make do since she’s a teammate and her company isn’t all too bad. Though, he does wonder if he’ll continue making daily meals for the team. That would hurt on the finances.

”So uh, you want me to continue making food for you for the rest of our time here?”

Deflecting even the littlest bit of praise right away... 'Ugh.' He reminded her of Isabelle. But at least he knew how to cook.

"Come on, don't sell yourself short. You know I'd like to be able to think Mira is the worst member of our team." Lyssa went in to finish off that burrito, devouring the thing like it was her last meal and finishing it off by licking her finger. While she let out a content sigh, an easy joke came to mind, one that she barely thought twice about saying out loud. The opportunity had presented itself, and she wasn't exactly one to hold off from making a joke at someone else's expense. "Although, you are kind of short." In a way that was unusual for her however, she felt a tad bit guilty after letting it out. He seemed a little on the sensitive side, and while she didn't typically hold herself responsible for other peoples' emotions, he had been extremely kind and patient with her today. After a quiet chuckle, she shook her head. "Sorry. Habit. The three of us are just... weirdly tall."

As tempting as it was to not worry about her health and just eat those burritos until she keeled over and died, Lyssa was surprisingly satiated after that one. The others would come in handy for a snack later on if she didn't inhale them now. Setting the place on the floor beside her bed, she moved to lay down again, returning her hands to their spot beneath her head as one leg folded over the other. "Look, if you keep making food like that, you're gonna turn me into a junkie for the stuff. Now and then is fine, but don't go out of your way to please me. Also, not trying to get fat."

Bleh. Height joke. He’s not that short is he? Noir knows that he’s above average in terms of height, so that really shouldn’t hurt. Though, to be fair, he is short compared to his team. I guess that does make me short… Doesn’t it? He didn’t know what to feel about that. After all, it’s merely a statement of facts, though it still hurt nonetheless. Not only that, but it could be one of those jokes Lyssa always makes, so how should he deal with this? Noir was so unsure that he could only give the most bland and awkward response.

”Um….”

Realizing how downhill Noir went, he should just use work to unawkward the whole situation (for him anyways). With a smoothie of a consistent texture, Noir quickly put it into a cup for Lyssa’s consumption, all with nervous laughter towards the joke and Lyssa’s response. ”Of course, of course! Haha... “ The nervous laughter fades away as he just stands there awkwardly now with the cup extended towards Lyssa.

Shoot, Noir doesn’t know what to do from here. What do they talk about? What can he even say? Internally, he’s sweating bullets. Externally… Well, he does still seem nervous but not to the extent of internal screaming.

Lyssa raised both of her eyebrows for a half-second as she noticed his reaction. Yep, sensitive was an accurate assessment. She wanted to like Noir, but if he was going to be that hard to joke around with, this wasn't going to be easy for either of them. She reluctantly brought herself to sit up again, letting out a strained grunt as she moved her sore muscles. Seeing how tense Noir suddenly was after her comment, she had to try her best to make things casual again by speaking openly about it.

"... I'm an asshole, I know." The woman smirked a little, reaching out to take the cup from him and hold it in both hands. "If I say something that hurts your feelings or whatever, I'm sorry, but I ain't trying to. Honest." These kinds of admissions weren't too unheard of from her, but as she went on, she felt more and more out of her element. "I... I do have respect for you. Big time. So when I poke fun, you ought to keep that in mind. It's not that I'm trying to put you down, it's my shitty sense of humor." It wasn't much of an excuse, she knew that, but it was something of an attempt to explain herself. She didn't want to belittle him enough that he would dislike her, but she was fine with toeing the line now and then.

"If you ever wanna tell me to shut the hell up? Go for it. Or whatever nicer version of that you'd use." At that point, she didn't know what else to say on that subject. Her thumb traced around the rim of her cup before she brought it to her lips, taking a little sip of the smoothie. These types of drinks usually weren't her favorite, so she was pleasantly surprised by how much she enjoyed the taste of it. She let out a quiet hum, one that effectively communicated those thoughts. Maybe if she added a little protein, she could see it becoming a regular thing for her. "Anyway... I'm sure you're sick of the blind questions that you probably get all the damn time, but I gotta ask. How did you learn to make shit like this? The food, the smoothies? It's baffling. To an ignorant idiot like me, at least."

Noir pauses as his teammate explains herself. Then the pause went on for a little longer as he processes what Lyssa said. While still a little awkward, it was not as tense as before. Honestly, Noir couldn’t really get behind his teammate’s thought process, but he supposes that it would appease her if he went with it as best as he could. With a rather small nod to himself, Noir pumps himself up to regain his composure. Looking back at Lyssa with a rather bright smile, Noir cheerfully (and awkwardly) responded back, ”Um… I.. uh… I wouldn’t say you’re an asshole. I-I think you’re pretty cool! After all, if you weren’t a decent person, you wouldn’t have apologized!” Noir pauses, but slightly panics as he felt as if he had made an incorrect assumption. Seeking to remedy that, Noir pipes up again, ”U-Unless you feel that way! I-I’ll try my best to do what you say!”

With that out of the way, Noir quickly zoomed back to the kitchen to start making the next few burritos for the sisters, as well as trying to avoid further social interaction that preys on his awkward nature any further. He was well into the process when she asked him about his cooking skills. Normally, Noir would be very awkward about the conversation. However this was something he was very proud of, so he couldn’t help but puff up in pride. ”A lot of hard work! If I couldn’t do anything else, might as well learn to do this the best I can! Smell, texture, even taste if I’m not sure, but I mostly run off of memory now!” To be honest, he seems akin to a child proud of something they can do extremely well. How cute.

Lyssa watched his reaction closely. She noticed the odd way he digested the information and responded. Apparently, trying to be casual about her abrasive attitude was not the right approach. Her attempt at explaining herself didn't exactly get through to him. It never did, to anyone. Obviously, her way of thinking was flawed. She knew that. Focusing on it in any capacity just ticked her off. Feeling that a sudden shift in her own mood would be inevitable if she tried to carry on with that subject, she let out a defeated huff and shook her head. He didn't sound very honest, but given how her words had apparently made him feel, she couldn't really expect that of him. As he zoomed off, she decided to just stay quiet, sipping at her smoothie.

He went on to answer her question, though Lyssa was only half-listening at this point as she distracted herself. She did her best to listen as she moved to sit up on the side of her bed, setting the smoothie down before starting to untie her boots. As always, it was incredibly relieving to take them off after a long day, just one little thing that helped ease her mind. The food that Noir had so kindly made for her was simply the cherry on top. Maybe the two of them didn't mesh all that well, but she did find his presence to be much more relaxing than that of her other teammates. Now that he was speaking more confidently rather than being his usual meek self, there was one less little thing to annoy her. As she kicked her feet back onto the bed, Lyssa took a deep breath, then exhaled. In that moment, she felt peace of mind. This level of relaxation was a rare sight to see from her.

There was only one thing she could think of that might have been able to make the evening better. She kept toying with the idea in her mind. Lyssa never wanted to do it in front of Mira and Mithra; it was almost like a private ritual of meditation. Something that she almost exclusively did alone. However, Noir was an entirely different case. He couldn't see or watch her doing it, and while that didn't truly make much of a difference, it made her feel a little more open to sharing. Lyssa eyed the floor beside her bed as she considered reaching for the object beneath it.

"... Noir," she asked with an unusually curious yet sincere tone, "Do you like music?"

Noir pauses. "A-Ah, well... I-It's..." He seems to smile a bit in excitement, the energy practically oozing off of him now. He'd love to talk more about this! "It's an art I can actually enjoy since, well, I'm not impeded by anything!" Thankfully, he doesn't seem to distracted as he almost routinely makes the burritos in front of him. Another brief pause as he considered something else, but that'll be something he'll have to deal with later.

While getting to the slower part of the whole ordeal, he fidgets in place, tapping his feet in impatience for the burritos to be ready. "A-And well... I-I don't get much exposure to anything that involves that much... creativity. Because of my own issues. So..." He's strangely at that weird line between stuttering mess and confident nerd. He doesn't get to talk often, so he's excited to have a nice conversation with his teammate! On the other hand... He's unsure of whether or not he'll mess it up again...

You know, the pause is strangely long, and Noir had just realized it. He decides to fill the silence with awkward laughter. "Haha, yeah... T-That's my brief thoughts on music."
