CHARACTER

Name: Kol Augur

Age: 30 - born Tulikuuma 13th, 50 AC

Species and Gender: Human Male

Symbol: Augury

Occupation: Mercenary, Ex-Atlesian Special Ops

Appearance: Kol stands at a towering 6’5”, and weighs 183 lbs. He has a very muscular frame, taken from his time in the Atlesian special ops and his time as a mercenary. He has short, charcoal colored, windswept hair that reaches halfway down his neck and hazel eyes. Though most of his irises are a dark greenish brown, there is a golden hue encircled around the center. His right eye, though it looks just like his left, is actually a cybernetic replacement given to him while he was in the Atlesian military. He has scarring around where the cybernetic eye now is from when he had lost it to a piece of shrapnel.

While he was clean shaven when he was in the military, he has since taken to keeping his would-be beard down to a light stubble, though he does have a scar on the right side of his upper lip that keeps any hair from growing above it. His face, to any stranger, would seem like one that’s grown tired, from either fighting or just the world, but he betrays this and very rarely appears unhappy or interested.

His combat outfit is made up mostly of his old Atlesian armor, a glorious white chestpiece with a raised collar highlighted in yellow, similarly colored shoulder pads, and white armor running down his arms, ending in small white plates protecting the back of his hands, and two white shin guards. Overtop of his armor, he wears a weathered old bomber jacket, with a white fur lining on the inside and a heavy, charcoal colored, leather exterior. The jacket has two zipper pockets on either side of the stomach and is able to be zipped up, though Kol usually leaves it open, easily revealing the armored chestpiece underneath,

Below his armor, he wears the standard black undershirt and combat pants, complete with several easy to reach pockets, steel toed combat boots, and black gloves with hardened knuckles. Around his waist, he wears his old utility belt, with several pouches for storing ammunition and dust hung all around it.

He’s made some adjustments of his own to the armor and belt, most notably, he left behind the helmet and its iconic heads up display in favor of using the targeting and display in his new eye. In addition to that, he added a magnetic lock to the back of his chestplate to store his rifle as well as a smaller magnetic lock on his left hip for his side arm.

Approximation of what he looks like

History: Kol likes to say he was born into his job. His father fought and served in the Atlesian military in the fight against the faunus during their revolt, his grandfather before him fought and died in the Greyed War, his mother had fought for years before deciding to leave and settle down. When Kol was born, his father had finally finished his final tour and returned home to the child he’d missed the birth of. His father loved his son and his wife deeply, but the war and the things he’d done, the things he’d been told from his own father, they left scars on the man. He did his best to keep himself together for the sake of his child, but his wife knew that he wasn’t entirely the same man she’d met over ten years prior anymore. He tried to talk his son out of attending the Atlas military school once he came of age, but both his and his wife’s pleas fell on deaf ears.

Kol was determined to rise in the classes after he was accepted into Atlas, even at a young age, he knew what he’d wanted to join the ranks of the military. He had no special love for Atlas, no great desire to protect his home and loved ones from foreign invaders, all he had was a calling, a feeling in his gut and his heart that it was what he was meant to do. He’d heard of hunters and huntresses, how they obtained superhuman feats and warded off the inevitable threat of the Grimm. He’d always known that they were a necessary part of the world, to keep everything from falling apart at the seams, but he also knew that there were things that they wouldn’t do, jobs they wouldn’t take, either because they simply wouldn’t stoop so low as to go after a simple murderer or because the Grimm was a more pressing matter. In the beginning, that’s what he understood that he was for, Hunters were there to stop the inhuman and he was there to stop the human. He’d be damned if they lasted longer than he did, however, and went to one of the teachers for the hunters side of the academy to unlock his aura.

When news came of his father’s suicide following his graduation from his academy, it threw Kol down a winding tunnel of drinking, self pity, regret, doubt, more drinking, selfish thoughts, more drinking, and finally acceptance after nearly a year of grief. He’d been given some weeks of leave before officially starting in the military proper given his father’s suicide but even still he came in a week before his required date to get started. He told others that he was fine, that he’d moved on, but it was really just to take his mind off of the spiral of thoughts.

Time came and went and Kol eventually moved on. He had been in the forces for over a year now and had been placed into a marksman division. His squad was almost like a family to him, a shallow replacement for his missing father and now reclusive mother. He knew exactly what it was though and he accepted it, the why didn’t matter as much as the relief.

Another year went by and he rose through the ranks, eventually being promoted to the special operations department and placed on a team specially tasked with taking out high priority targets as the local marksman expert. At the same time as his promotion, word began to circle about specialist in the military, a hunter who had chosen to stick with Atlas even after getting their license. Janus Rogo was described as a nigh unbeatable force, going after Grimm and people a-like and Kol finally had something to look up to again. This man, only five years his senior, was like a wrecking ball in the stories he’d heard. It was then that he decided he would strive to match the specialists in power, but focus everything he could on the human element.

And so, Kol did what he was told. He was sent on missions, he set up position, a body was dropped, intel was collected, and he returned to base. The cycle repeated, week in and week out. Every mission brought his skill higher, his aura training increased, his senses sharpened, he trained with another of his squad in melee combat with a sword and dagger, he practiced precision and harder and harder shots. He grew and his squad grew with him, their team rose higher and higher and their missions became more priority driven. Some spoke about their team being a new staple of the military, granting them more powerful tech, higher levels of clearance, and in spite of this, their names were never made public. As far as they knew, the missions were completed by several different anonymous teams. That didn’t bother Kol though, he was never in it for the recognition.

All it really takes to ruin a team's reputation is one bad mission with public consequences. During Kol’s final official mission, his team was chosen to travel down to Mistral, several years following the breach of the walls. Their mission was simple, retrieve intel on a suspected White Fang arms deal taking place within the inner sea and dispatch the informant. The current intel suggested there would be an additional meeting prior to the deal within an abandoned town along the coast. As the team arrived, Kol made his way to a small mountain overlooking the town with a small cave in the side while the rest of the team made their way to the edge of the village.

He got into position, as he had so many times before, and moved his scope over the village, checking the dilapidated houses and buildings for any sign of movement. He called out that the village was all clear over the comms and as he did, something heavy slammed into the back of his head. When he came to, minutes later, he had been haphazardly tied to a rock cropping within the small cave with a masked faunus standing in front of him, holding a glistening knife. He demanded to know what Kol knew, why he was doing this, what his name was. He refused the demands and was swiftly kicked in the gut, causing him to lurch forward. As he bent over, the faunus grabbed him by the hair and lifted his face up. In one moment, Kol held a fierce resilience and in the next moment, the knife was plunged into his eye, twisting before ripping out. His vision went black for several seconds, both eyes failing him, as thoughts began to swirl within him. He could see bits and pieces of the life of the man who stood before him. Only it wasn’t seeing, nor was it voices in his head telling him the events of his life. He could feel his life simultaneously with all of his senses and with none of them as if he were the man standing before him. It all went through him in seconds and yet he understood it all, the things he’s been through, the things he’d done, and in the end, the feeling of killing the man below him, missing an eye and tied to a rock.

As Kol’s vision returned to him, a shot rang out, breaking the screams of pain that had been the previously loudest noise, and the faunus fell over, bleeding from the temple. Behind him stood the squad leader, blood dripping from their shoulder. As they untied Kol and wrapped a bandage around his head they told him that the intel was acquired but at the cost of the other two members and that evac was already on its way.

Kol and his leader waited in that cave, ready to fire on anyone that came in, but no one came. The silence of the wilderness around the broken only by the howls of Grimm that had now entered the village. When the Bullhead finally arrived and brought them home, Kol was brought to an immediate care center as his leader went to base to turn in the intel. It was there, in that medical bed a week later, that he saw the news of Janus’ mission gone awry. The claims of bad intel, the dead innocents, all of it. When Kol’s leader finally returned to inform him of the chance to get a cybernetic eye, he activated his new found semblance and ran through the life of his leader and trusted friend in just seconds, unwillingly skipping from time to time to place to place. Of course he did, he had to know what the intel was, he couldn’t just not know, it was important. He needed to know.

But his newly awakened semblance lacked control, fineness, and he saw and heard and felt and tasted nothing that resembled what could have been the information. He did see things, though. Lived through them like he was actually there. Things done in secret, things they were forced to do, things they enjoyed doing. Kol was disgusted. But he still. Needed. To know.

And so he accepted the offer, the offer to take the cybernetic eye and the offer to continue taking missions, under the guise of wanting to get back at the ones who caused the loss of his squad mates. Every mission, every superior, every soldier, week after week, mission after mission, Kol trained his semblance on. He learned horrible things, horrible truths, about each and every one of them. Months went by, his semblance became more controlled, and just as he thought maybe he could try again with his leader and finally learn what happened, they died on the field. Bullet to the back of the head from a member of the fang, just like how they had killed Kol’s would be killer.

Kol was distraught, not at losing a friend or teammate, but at losing the source of the information. That pain of loss subsided quickly as he realized that there would have to be others who knew, higher ups somewhere in the chain that knew about the mission. So he continued. He kept taking missions, now solo and nameless to the public, using his semblance to look into every possible person. Every soldier, higher ups, munitions officers, engineers, civilians passing by on the street. Years went by and as the knowledge of horrible acts within the people around him grew, the thirst for the truth slowly faded. Not because he’d moved on but because after years of seeing each and everyone's secrets and pasts, he’d grown numb to anything that it could possibly be. There wasn’t anything he could learn from those around him that could shock or disgust him anymore and it was then that Kol realized something.

Everything done here, everything done by the military, by the kingdom, by the world, it wasn’t done in service to a higher calling or a moral requirement. It was done in the service of the almighty lien. As this dawned on him, Kol spent the next year tracking information, using his semblance on important people, collecting massive amounts of blackmail to be finally used as he informed his superior and his superior’s superior that he was through. That he would be going to freelance jobs elsewhere and that, officially, he was to be marked KIA. He told them that he was taking his gear and weapons and eye and striping them of any tracking capabilities and that they would let this happen because if they tried so much as to slow him down he would ruin the their careers, the careers of their children, their superiors, their family, their entire public life and the integrity of Atlas. He convinced them to keep quiet about the whole event, to falsify the paperwork. He convinced them the trouble of letting him go would be well outweighed by the trouble that would come if they didn’t.

And so Kol left Atlas, leaving his now near amnesic mother with a parting gift of a bouquet of roses before heading out, and made his way to Mistral, chose a new name, Kol Augur, and got to work taking jobs within the dark reaches of the kingdom. He made sure never to make a name for himself, he was never in it for the recognition after all. All he made sure to do was get the job, get it done quick, kill whoever it was that needed to be killed, and enjoy his life free of the constraints of the Atlesian Military.

TL;DR: ShowHide
Kol was basically born into the military and joined as soon as he could, despite his dad telling him not to. When he graduated, his dad committed suicide but Kol pressed on. Over the years he rose through the ranks as a sniper and was eventually promoted to Special Ops. Knew of Janus during the time when he was basically a war hero. Went a mission to secure intel, mission went sideways, he lost his right eye (Which was replaced with a cybernetic eye) and two teammates. Intel that was retrieved turned out to be bad intel and caused Janus to sink three boats, one with innocents on it. Following that, Kol tried very hard to find out what the intel was with his semblance but after years of trying and failing and learning horrible truths instead, he grew numb to it all and said "Fuck it, I'm going solo. If you try to chase me, I'll end your careers and the careers of everyone you care about." and now he's a mercenary.

Personality: Kol is a surprisingly jolly fellow when he’s not on the job. Easy to strike up a conversation and knock back a few drinks with while trading stories of battles. He wasn’t always so happy, though. The determined young man who was hellbent on finding out the truth about his failed mission had died years ago, and the young, starry-eyed boy who had joined the military to do the right thing had died longer than that. Now, all that remains is a man who’s come to accept the evils in the world and his place amongst it. His loyalty lies in the money and the money alone, with him being willing to take almost any job from anyone if he can complete it and it pays the bills. While his life in Atlas filled him with general disdain for faunus, he’s more than willing to look past any racial issues to take a job, even if that job is in service to the white fang.

When he’s properly on the job, he relies heavily on taking out his target or targets within the first few seconds of engagement and if that fails, he falls on the crutch of his semblance to learn of anything in their past that he can use against them and to learn of their combat style. He’s become quite effective at lying through his teeth when he needs to and isn’t above using lies to take down someone or make them drop their guard.

Of all the things that Kol threw away from Atlas, his mother is the one thing that truly mattered, that he made sure not to completely sever ties with. Though she’s reaching on in years and isn’t long for the world, he makes sure to keep in touch through his many back channels and checks up on her from time to time, though recently she’s started to forget who he even is. It tears him apart knowing that one day she too will be gone and she might very well be the only thing that keeps him tied down to the world.

Aura and Semblance: Kol’s aura is a charcoal color with specks of gold and was unlocked, along with his semblance, at the Atlesian Military Academy. Over the years, he’s finely tuned his aura to act a sixth sense, allowing him an edge in close quarter combat to counteract his relatively low close combat skill.

Iudex - Kol’s semblance is a strange one. When activated, Kol’s vision goes completely black, though there is no evidence of this from the outside. Once this happens, he can pick someone he was looking at or facing and once the choice is made, thoughts begin to flood his head. Their actions, past, present, and future, all flow into him and crowd his mind for several seconds as stands utterly still.

The semblance can see the entire extent of someone’s past clearly but their future is only a foggy outline of what could be. This takes no aura or stamina to do and though it leaves Kol immobile for a moment, it is exceptionally useful for both playing psychological warfare and for figuring out the fighting style of his opponent. The semblance has no range, but he must be looking directly at the person, they can't be reflected off of a mirror or be in a picture or on TV or anything like that.

Combat Behavior:  Kol prefers not to have to get into direct conflict with his marks, but if push comes to shove he won’t back down unless necessary. He mostly sticks to his long range rifle, picking off people in a shot or two. Those with aura make the job harder and he usually has to get in a closer range so he can quickly realign his rifle between shots and relies more heavily on dust ammunition. While the rifle is made for long range, he can, in a pinch, use it close range for heavy damage. He will sometimes stick his rifle around a corner if he’s already in a fight and use his cybernetic eye link to get a view of the battlefield while getting some shots off.

When he fails to keep a fight long range, he can fall back on a few tools. He usually tries to keep some range up by using his handgun, though if that fails he’s willing to use the second forms of his weapons and use a sword and dagger. While fighting with his sword and dagger, he generally tries to play more on the side of caution, deflecting, backing away, deflecting, and getting a shot in when he can. In a pinch, if needs to escape, he has a few tricks up his sleeve like using a smoke grenade to obscure his attacker’s vision or using his semblance to strike a bargain with something they may not want getting out.

While Kol is an extremely deadly and advanced combatant, he isn’t invincible. He isn’t as good with close range combat as he is with ranged and can be completely outclassed by a mixed combatant if they keep the fight close ranged or a close range specialist. In the same vein, while his aura provides him a sort of sixth sense for danger outside of his vision, surprise attacks will still put him at a disadvantage. Possibly most importantly, Kol was always trained as a human fighter, he fought and killed people. He has minimalist survival training when it comes to Grimm and is by no means an expert at fighting them, choosing to avoid them when he’s out on missions in the wild.

WEAPON 1

Name: Fidelis

Primary Form: Fidelis’ main form is that of a heavily modified Atlesian Military issued sniper rifle. An extended rifle with a faded white frame, grey underbarrel grips and handle, and black trims. There are a set of toggleable light blue lights scattered around the gun, but Kol tends to leave them turned off. The modifications he’s made include removing the scope, adding a camera system that connects to his cybernetic eye to the barrel, a small version of his gradient symbol on the stock, and after many many days and several failed attempts he’s managed to turn once normal sniper rifle into a transformable hunters weapon.

The rifle is semi-automatic and though he prefers to take deliberate shots from afar, he can use it as a mid ranged weapon in a firefight.

Secondary Form: A retractable blade comes out of the bottom of the barrel as the grip of the gun folds back as the top of the gun folds downward, reducing the size. The second form of Fidelis is a 30 in. sword, complete with the Atlas flair of small light blue lights and a white finish.

Dust Functions: Dust rounds can be loaded into the gun to pack an extra punch, but other than that it has no functions.

Fire Dust - Explosive rounds.
Ice Dust - Freezes area around where the bullet hit.
Lightning Dust - Lets out a burst of lightning in a small area around the point of impact.
Wind Dust - Causes the bullet to speed up considerably, less drop off.
Steam Dust - Creates a cloud of steam at the point of impact large enough to envelope a person.
Kinetic Dust - Less damage, more knock back.
Gravity Dust - Caused objects and people in a 3 meter wide radius to be pulled in toward the point of impact for a brief moment. People in this range feel like someone wrapped a rope around them and suddenly tugged hard on it.

History: Given to him on his promotion to special ops, he has since heavily modified the weapon.

WEAPON 2

Name: Memento

Primary Form: Kol’s secondary weapon is a modified standard issue handgun. Just like the rifle, it is mainly white, with a gray under barrel and black highlights. Just like the rifle, the blue lights are turned off unless in its secondary form.

Secondary Form: A retractable blade pops out, this time from the top, as the grip fold all the way back, transforming the handgun into a simple dagger. The dagger form of Memento, unlike the sword form of Fidelis, can still fire while transformed.

History: Kol was given this weapon during his time in the Atlesian military, but has modified it over the years.

Gear

Cybernetic Eye: Kol’s right eye was replaced by a cybernetic eye when he was 24. The eye allows him to toggle between normal vision, thermal imaging, night vision, and “aim down sights”. ADS allows him to see where his rifle is pointing, instead of relying on a scope. The eye connects to a camera system placed slightly above the end of the barrel, and features adjustable zoom, a sniper’s reticle with range finding and Thermal imaging/night vision just like the normal eye. Though the eye looks nearly identical to his left eye, if one were to look close enough, half a foot away from Kol’s face at least, they would notice electronic markings no the iris and pupil.

History: A cybernetic eye given to him following a mission that ended in him losing his right eye.

Jump Jet: A strap on, dust powered, Atlesian Special Ops issued jetpack. Like most Atlesian equipment, it is a brilliant white color with grey and black highlights and trims. A powerful, and expensive, piece of equipment that Kol keeps in well repair, the jump jet allows for short and powerful bursts of kinetic dust from its four ports, letting the wearer jump incredibly high, dodge very quickly, or slow a fall. The dust batteries that power it are close enough to the body to be covered by aura, but the ports are not, allowing them to be shot in combat.

Credit to this for the jumpjet design.

History: A piece of equipment from usually relegated to skirmishers in the special ops, Kol obtained this equipment through several contacts in Mistral and Atlas.

Monocular: Due to Kol’s semblance reliance on direct eye sight, seeing someone through just his right eye wouldn’t let him activate it. So when he was picking his equipment as he went out on missions, he chose to cut the binoculars’ weight in half and go with a monocular instead. It is mostly a normal monocular, with the exception of a built in rangefinder, both for ease and as a back up in the case of his rifle’s eye link malfunctioning.

History: A piece of equipment from his days in the military.

Smoke Grenades: Simple smoke grenades that he is able to keep stocked up on from his contacts in Mistral. Once released, it lets out a large plume of smoke capable of hiding even a Paladin for a couple minutes.

History: A piece of equipment from his days in the military.

Tactical Goggles: A pair of clear tactical goggles he picked up during a mission to Vacuo’s desert. They have a very simple HUD, showing a compass toward the top of the glass and the time near the bottom.

History: A piece of equipment from his days in the military.

Misc.: Miscellaneous equipment that he only brings if he thinks he’ll need it. 20 ft long rope, zip ties, small flashlight attachable to his shoulder,  other stuff that I’ll probably add later.

History: Bought at the store.
