The Vale Region / Immigration Blues (Open)
« on: June 02, 2017, 04:06:58 PM »
Stepping off the transport, Martin and his mother look around in awe at the surroundings, for different reasons - Blaze because she had lived her whole life in the deserts of Vacuo and never imagined a place like this, and Martin because he was excited to be back in Vale, and permanently this time.

"C'mon, Mom, let me show you around," Martin said, practically bouncing on the balls of his feet with excitement. "Well, uh, the parts of the area I got to see at the tournament, anyway." He pulled on his mother's arm, but she didn't budge. Her face was a strange mix of wonder, hope, and dismay.

"I hope I made the right choice coming here..." She pulled a small picture of Cerise out of her pocket, and looked at it with sadness.

"Hey, I've got my friends looking out for her, they're good at what they do so I'm sure it'll be alright." He pulled again, and this time, reluctantly, Blaze followed, putting the picture away. "Hey, you remember that girl I was telling you about after I got home from Vytal? Sakura? She had her main shop somewhere not too-too far from here. Or there's the hills, great view of Beacon from there. Or what about a walk on the docks to catch some of that sea air and relax? Oh, I did find a great place to grab a bite to eat while I was here, if you're hungry."

"My, Martin, you're full of energy today," Blaze laughed. "But I really should be getting to the shop, I have to do a final interview before I've officially got the job."

"Hey, I'll walk you there, and point out the places I remember on the way," Martin enthused. "This place has some pretty cool sights, I think you'll like it here."

((I have no idea if LuckyStar/Sakura is still even here, because it appears their last post was last year at Vytal, hence my decision to not head for the shop just yet :p ))

I've mentioned it on the Discord, and Reddit /r/RWBY, but I don't know if everyone here uses one or both of those, so I'm posting about it here. I'm working on a RWBY-inspired modpack, as the title says, and I'm curious if there might be anyone interested in me releasing it, in hosting/playing on a server using it, and in giving me suggestions for mods to use. Details are at this link.

Almost a year has passed since that one Vytal Tournament. Wonder how everyone's doing back in Vale? Martin thought to himself, scarf (a replacement, since as far as he knows, Sakura still has the one he wore to Vytal) draped over his face. He pulls it down off one eye, and looks east towards the sky over Vale. Wonder if she's looking at the stars too... What are the odds we'd both be looking at the same one? He pulls his jacket tighter around himself, to brace against the harsh, cold, Vacuan desert night, and closes his eyes.

((It just occurred to me that the tag I had in the title could have been misread as being a team name. Corrected it to what it actually is, namely an 'anyone can join in' tag.))

(especially people that I've RPed with in the past)

So I posted something a couple days ago in the Introductions board, and gotten several views but no replies. I figured I would ask here as well.

I've been away for a while, as you all (if you remember/know me at all) will know, but somehow my character was never moved to MIA. I'm wondering if that oversight means that I'm fine to start up again from where I left off (though unless I make a 'X time ago' thread, then after a small timeskip), or if, as I would if my character had correctly been moved to MIA, I have to re-apply. I'm also curious if everyone (especially board admins, and the people I've RPed with or could have done so with in the past, such as, if they're still around, Razz/Walter, Sakura/LuckyStar, Xanh/Kiith, Eddy/00Mogar, etc) is cool with me returning, or if my past disappearance would be considered a 'flight risk' so to speak :p

5
So I've been away for a while, but assuming the game is still running, I'm interested in attempting to make a comeback. Whether or not I'm successful depends on a)if the game's still even going, b)if everyone's cool with it, and c)my real life schedule, but I'd like to at least try. I noticed my character, by some oversight presumably, still hasn't been moved to MIA Characters, but I'm fully willing to go through the re-application process if need be.

RPG Discussion / Vacuo
« on: October 21, 2016, 01:40:03 PM »
As of yesterday (or today for non-First members like me), we know a whole lot more about Vacuo. That knowledge is starting to make me think I a)made my character bio a little too weak and b)played too soft at the tournament, considering 'if you can survive here, you're welcome here'... That said, although I'm still considering transferring Martin to Beacon once the tournament is officially over, I'm wondering if this new intel might tempt more people to make Vacuan characters, or characters who fled the harsh lifestyle of Vacuo for other, friendlier kingdoms, or something.

Fresh from his loss against Razz, Martin, still in his wet clothes from the battle, sits in the food court area below the colosseum. The look on his face is an unusual mix of glee and intensity, as he recounts the battle in his head, looking at it from every possible angle to try and improve his strategy, for the next time. The hot drink in front of him cooling off, he has seemingly forgotten all about it as his head is back in the colosseum.

"Yeah... Then I should have..." He trails off, muttering under his breath, completely oblivious to his surroundings. It's entirely possible he wouldn't even notice someone if they walked right up and tapped him on the shoulder.

RPG Discussion / Non-tournament threads in the colosseum?
« on: October 18, 2016, 12:18:21 AM »
The description of the colosseum subforum says there's amenities such as a food court and a bar, but so far it seems like the only thing being posted there are the fights. I'm wondering if (obviously not in the 1v1/2v2/team sub-subforums, but in the main colosseum subforum) threads of people (combatants or audience) just hanging out below decks belong there, since the colosseum isn't part of Vale, or if they should just go in Vale, since the colosseum is temporarily above Vale?

RPG Discussion / Students transferring? Is this a thing?
« on: September 25, 2016, 11:19:30 PM »
(I know it's happened in the show, and in real life plenty of times, but I meant more in terms of the RP rules)

Now I haven't fully committed to the idea yet, still holding out a sliver of hope that we'll get some more Vacuans joining in, but I've been thinking, since that's clearly where most (all for now) of the action is, of possibly having Martin transfer to Beacon, either after the tournament or just at some point in the hypothetical future. I'm not sure if this is feasible by the RP rules other than in backstories, though.

The Vale Region / A Quiet Place To Train (Open)
« on: September 24, 2016, 11:05:24 AM »
After his encounter with the young mechanic Sakura, Martin had determined that if he was going to stand much of a chance at the tournament, let alone impress anyone, he'd need to train his butt off. To that end, he had set out to find a quiet training ground. Somewhere along the way, he just got turned around, and ended up wandering into Forever Fall. "Well, this seems like as good a place as any," he said to no one in particular, as he unslung the sword from his back and began stretching.

After finishing up his stretches, he began practicing his forms, fighting an imaginary foe, oblivious to the glowing red eyes watching him from amongst the trees.

RPG Discussion / Can we please see some more Vacuo people?
« on: September 22, 2016, 02:06:16 PM »
(Vacuans? Vacuites?)

Martin is pretty lonely being one of the few (that I've seen) people from Vacuo around here, especially in his year at Shade. Sure, the pretty girls and interesting folks he's been running into make it a bit better, but the whole 'fish out of water' thing would go a lot easier if there was someone he could commiserate with, and possibly team with, and (especially if there's going to be teaming) I don't want to create more characters just to talk to myself.

Welcome to a belated 'Hello!' from your friendly neighbourhood Pyrrha Canadian 'mildly-experienced RPer' (read: was involved in a Young Justice RP on Reddit and an X-Men Evolution one way back in the day on iirc ProBoards, plus some LiveJournal multiverse-based RP communities way back when). I've already joined in the fun (hello to Azrail, Griz, and Ophelia's players), but wasn't able to introduce myself here because topic creation was borked in this subforum.

I'm Omega, same name as here on Reddit (where I've been spending an inordinate portion of my Redditing time on /r/RWBY lately), just plain Omega on the /r/RWBY Discord and the Cards Against Remnant games. I only just got into RWBY in the last week or two, but I binged the entire series in a few days (I know, easy to do when any given season is only a few hours long) and am now in withdrawal until October 23 (I don't have RT First membership, so I get it a day late), plus I missed my old RPing days, so I signed up here to fill the gap and take me back to those good old days (what even does 'salad days' mean, anyway? Like what's so nostalgic about salad?), as well as meet and chat with (both in and out of character) some other RPer/fans of the series.

I hail from the East Coast of Canada, one of the few provinces to sit in the timezone that (as far as mainland North America goes) only exists in Canada, the Atlantic timezone (GMT-4). They say the people here are among the nicest/friendliest in the world, and I aspire to be a prime example of that, which would be much easier if I didn't have social anxiety. I enjoy a lot of 'typical geek' hobbies, such as reading, gaming, watching sci-fi and fantasy shows/movies, comics, and (depending on the series) anime and manga.

The Vale Region / Airship docks, Vale - Arriving for the Festival (Open)
« on: September 20, 2016, 09:49:12 PM »
An airship pulls into the docks, and Martin saunters down the ramp, looking around as he does. First day in a new kingdom, and it's actually cool enough that he doesn't need the Dust woven into his shirt to keep the heat away. A lot more vibrant that Vacuo, too. "Guess I should have expected the streets'd be so packed, what with the festival and all," he mused under his breath. "Hope I get a chance to see the sights, looks like I could get swept away in this crowd and end up anywhere." Several people jostle Martin as he tries to find his footing in the crowd, but miraculously, no one even tries to pick his pocket. Or maybe that's just him being paranoid after living in the desert all his life where people would do anything to survive.

Approved Characters / Martin Roja
« on: September 19, 2016, 01:33:50 PM »
CHARACTER

Name: Martin Roja (Martin from Mars, the Roman god of war as well as the Red Planet; Roja from the Spanish word for red)

Age: 19, born 3 Klever, 62 AC

Species and Gender: Human, Male

Symbol: Crossed swords with a circular shape behind, a scar carved into the lower left quarter of the circle
Spoiler: ShowHide

Occupation: Second-year student at Beacon Academy (formerly Shade)

Appearance: Martin is 5'7" tall, and weighs 145lbs. His hair is blood red, spiked sharply on top and in front, and tied back in a ponytail that hangs to midway between his shoulder blades. His skin is deeply tanned, almost bronze, and his eyes are steel gray (darker than silver, he's not one of those). Sometimes, when his temper flares, you can almost see flecks of red-orange in them. He has a narrow angular face, with a thin nose, and a mouth that's almost always turned up in a confident smirk. He wears a red sleeveless shirt with intricate designs in blue and gold that lead the eye, some woven with ice Dust to keep cool in his desert home, others simple thread stitching; as well as white pants that flare out at the knee and are tied at the ankle, and a black sash tied around his waist. His feet alternate between bare and shod in simple sandals. Sometimes he wears a red cloth tied across his forehead, other times around his neck, the latter being most common in Vacuo because he can pull it up over his face in the event of a sandstorm, while the two are equally common when in other kingdoms or at the Amity Colosseum during the Vytal Festival/Tournament.

History: Martin was born and raised in the kingdom of Vacuo, where he learned at a young age to fend for himself because his father was taken from him in a random Grimm attack. From the moment he was old enough to fight, Martin begged his mother to let him enroll in Oasis Academy; finally she relented and allowed him to join. In Oasis, he showed promise, potential, but for the first two years, very little aptitude. That all changed, however, when a second Grimm attack stole his little sister from him. After that, he redoubled his efforts, applied himself even more, and began to show drastic improvement. By the end of his third year, he was displaying aptitude and talent beyond much of his class. There were still several who were better than him, though only one really bothered him: Venus Citrine. This was for two reasons - first, every time she would outpace him in a combat exercise, she would taunt him, talk like he was at the bottom of the class despite him being in the top 35%. Second, and hardest for him to admit, was because he had a crush on her.

Eventually, Martin, Venus, and most of their classmates graduated from Oasis, and the top several students were to be given an immediate recommendation at Shade. Knowing that Venus was going to be selected, as she was among the top of their class, Martin, extending a metaphorical olive branch, approached her to congratulate her. She surprised him by being the first to speak. She apologized for the way she treated him, and kissed his cheek. It was only when his friends started pushing him that he realized, stunned by Venus' reaction as he was, that his name had been called. He had been chosen for a recommendation - he may have been on the bottom of that list, but he was still on the list! He would be attending Shade Academy!

After the Vytal Tournament in his first year at Shade, Martin's mother, Blaze, received a job offer from the Dust shop "From Dust Till Dawn" in Vale. At first Martin was torn, because leaving Vacuo would mean leaving his sister Cerise for dead in the desert, but he soon came to realize that there was more reason for his mother to take the job, and for him to go with her, than there was to stay stuck in the past. He asked his friends from Shade to keep an eye out and if they happen to find Cerise, to take care of her, and soon Martin and Blaze were on a transport bound for Vale, and Martin's new life as a student of Beacon Academy.

Personality: Martin puts forward a confident front, and some of it is real, especially given his history at Oasis, but for the most part, on the inside, he's still that scared little boy who begged his mother to send him to Oasis to learn to fight. He still often second-guesses himself at inopportune moments, and isn't completely sure he has what it takes to cut it at Shade. The friends he left behind haunt his thoughts, but the ones that came with him and the ones he makes as he goes through his life at Shade will strengthen him. His typical non-combat stance/posture tends to be ultra-casual, slouched posture, when not moving and there's a wall nearby he's apt to lean against it, or sit on it if it's a shorter wall.

Aura and Semblance: Martin has moderately strong Aura, to put it in easily-understandable terms it's akin to the HP of a mid-level all-rounder or a low-level tank character in an RPG. His Semblance is Illusion - He is capable of projecting illusory images with some level of tangibility, with differing properties based on Semblance Catalyst Focus use. The more illusions he projects, the weaker and less detailed/realistic they are. Producing a 1 m3 detailed/realistic illusory area (whether it's a full 1 m3 area or just an equivalent amount of illusory 'mass' in any sort of configuration) expends 3% of his Aura, and requires a slow trickle of Aura as well as moderate concentration to maintain. An equivalent 'mass'/size of less-detailed (monochrome, or more cartoonish in palette, or less 'there') costs an almost insignificant amount (around 1% or less) of Aura to cast and minimal concentration to maintain, but is far less convincing, and even less solid than the fully-detailed constructs. These illusions are visible to anyone within a radius of about a dozen meters or so (potentially further with greater focus and Aura expenditure), but the further from the epicenter (whether that's Martin himself or a specific target), the less convincing the illusion is. For example, in close combat, an illusion could mean the difference between life and death, but at a range, it's a distraction at best.

Semblance Catalyst Focus: Martin wears a chain around his neck, with five bits hanging from it in various shapes. Each of these is infused with Dust in different elements - Fire, Ice, Lightning, Water, and Gravity.

Combat Behavior: Martin tends to alternate between reckless and overly-cautious in battle, depending on who's watching and how the rest of his day has gone. If, for example, his childhood crush happens to be nearby, he'll be more likely to try to impress her, rush off into an uneven fight, and either come back an unlikely victor or in traction. If he's had a bad day (called out in class, rejected by a girl, friends bailed on a hang-out session, etc), his low self-confidence will take over and he'll be more methodical, cautious, and plan things out to the best of his ability.

WEAPON

Name: Gradus Bellum (March of War)

Primary Form: Broadsword, with exposed gears at the point where the blade meets the guard. The blade is stained red, and the guard and hilt are black with red accents.

Secondary Form: Polearm. The guard collapses in, the hilt extends, and the blade cracks and gently curves backward.

Tertiary Form: Battle rifle. The handle collapses slightly, the guard sheathes the blade, the blade bends forward into a stock, and a grip, trigger, and foregrip emerge from the handle.

Dust Functions: In rifle mode, Gradus Bellum is capable of firing Dust cartridges to varying effect. In sword form, inserting a fire Dust cartridge causes the sword to glow red and leave a trail of heated air and fire behind it when swung. If it makes contact while this effect is active, and the target is an animal or Grimm or their Aura is depleted, it ignites the point of impact, if it breaks skin on a human, Faunus, or animal it cauterizes the wound to a degree.

History: The base form and polearm transformation was an heirloom belonging to Martin's grandfather, Martius Roja. Martin modified it himself to add the ranged capabilities and Dust interaction, shortly after entering Oasis, because he felt a need to keep up with everyone else whose weapons were also guns, aside from the ones whose base forms were guns to begin with.
