CHARACTERName: Gavin Ardent
Age: 18, born Saule 8th.
Species and Gender: Human Male
Symbol: A white sword with green, avian wings in place of a crossguard, and a sun in place of a pommel.
Occupation: Huntsman in Training - Beacon Academy First Year
Appearance: Thin of frame with pale white skin and chin length, feathered platinum blonde hair, Gavin is a frail looking young man whose green eyes nevertheless shine with life. His common attire consists of a white blazer, worn buttoned over a black dress shirt, slim fitting black trousers with a green belt, and a long green scarf, with his emblem embroidered at the end.
Gavin stands at 5'10'' tall, and weighs 52 kg, being somewhat underweight.
History: Born to a common family in Vale City, Gavin was an ill child, near-constantly bedbound, only occasionally allowed short excursions outside in a wheelchair. With no social life to speak of, Gavin immersed himself in games, electronics, and most importantly, stories about Huntsmen and Huntresses, heroes who traveled the world, protecting the weak became a source of strength for the young Gavin, who wanted to live a life of freedom and excitement most of all.
These idle days continued until Gavin was 12 years old, when one afternoon, as the sun filtered in through his window, he found the strength to stand unaided for the first time in his life, weak of body but strong of his spirit, his desire to go out into the world had awakened his Semblance.
After spending time acclimating to a normal life, Gavin realized that his dream to be a Huntsman called to him, and begged his parents to allow him to attend Signal Academy, and though initially hesitant, they eventually relented, and his path to being a Huntsman, while starting a little later than most, started all the same.
Gavin's early days at Signal presented a significant obstacle, however. Lacking in both social and combat experience, with only his Semblance counteracting the effects of his illness, Gavin found himself one of the weaker members of his class at Signal, and with few friends. This resulted in his aggressive combat style and somewhat over-exuberant personality, as an attempt to compensate for his flaws.
Eventually, Gavin became more confident and skilled, enough to make it to Beacon Academy.
Personality: Exuberant, confident, genuine but unfortunately somewhat tactless, Gavin's sheltered upbringing has a habit of showing itself at the worst times, despite this, he typically means well. Fond of the outdoors, he can often be found reading or playing games on his scroll outdoors on his offtime.
As a result of spending most of his childhood pretty much on his own, Gavin's social skills still leave something to be desired, he can be a bit too interested in other people, coming off as clingy, and not always having the regard for other people's personal space that he should.
His childhood has also resulted in another notable but unfortunate personality flaw: like many in the world of Remnant, Gavin holds a minor degree of prejudice against the Faunus. While not an aggressive bigot, he nevertheless finds himself uncomfortable around them, resulting in him making attempts to keep his distance whenever possible. However, an important point to note is that he hasn't yet interacted with any of their kind enough to know that the unfair prejudice is unfounded.
His demeanor flattens a bit in the winter months, due to less exposure to sunlight making him feel a bit weaker, but he tries his best to not let it show too much.
Aura and Semblance: Gavin's Aura is
White.
His Semblance,
Sol invigorates him when exposed to sunlight, suppressing his illness, and granting him increased strength and stamina, the degree of improvement depending on how strong the sunlight is. However, when deprived of sunlight his strength diminishes, to the point where he is once again bedridden after about two days. If his Aura is depleted, these effects take place far more rapidly, with him being unable to move after about an hour, until his Aura is restored and he is exposed to more sunlight.
Functioning like a battery, Sol "charges" Gavin depending on the intensity of the sunlight available, and gradually degrades in power when sunlight is unavailable, with combat and other strenuous activity depleting his energy faster. This means he can function at night or indoors, but runs the risk of running out of energy if he overexerts himself with too many strong attacks.
At peak condition, such as in a desert at noon, Sol allows Gavin to perform incredible feats of strength, such as being able to cleave through even Grimm with thick, tough hides with a single blow but this will greatly deplete his energy reserves, knocking him back to a more normal level, and require him to charge up again if he wants to continue using strong attacks, which can take time.
On a normal, moderately sunny day, Gavin operates at a level that is slightly stronger physically than the average Beacon student, but if there are several days of poor weather, he can end up becoming somewhat weaker, putting him at risk on long missions in the winter months.
Assorted Semblance Trivia:
Gavin cannot tan or get sunburnt by the sun itself, but tanning beds or other UV rays will work as normal.
Gavin does not feel excessive heat from the sun, feeling pleasantly cool and hydrated even in summertime. Other sources of heat will still make him feel hot.
Gavin can't absorb energy from other sources of UV light, only the sun.
Sunlight still hurts Gavin's eyes if its too harsh.
Gavin can absorb sunlight filtering through windows or other transparent surfaces, but it isn't as strong as being directly exposed to the sunlight.
At high sunlight levels, Gavin is outlined in a slightly glowing halo, this isn't harsh enough to interfere with anyone's vision, and gives off a negligible amount of heat.
Combat Behavior: Gavin's personality factors heavily into his combat style, which is focused on hitting enemies hard and fast with close ranged frontal assaults, charging into the fray with the jet function of his weapon. His enthusiasm can lead to recklessness, which is especially dangerous as he is more defenseless than most when his Aura is depleted due to his strength draining rapidly. As a result, sustained fights aren't his forte.
He is capable of mid-range combat thanks to his weapon's flamethrower configuration, but he has no true long range options, meaning if an enemy can engage him at range and keep him from closing in, he's at a heavy disadvantage.
WEAPONName: Galatine
Primary Form: Galatine is a weapon composed of two primary parts, a sword and a sheath.
The sword part of Galatine is a bastard sword sword with a design similar to Gavin's emblem, featuring green wings for the crossguard, and a sun engraved on the bottom of the hilt. The wings do not curve too drastically, to allow Gavin access to the triggers above them, doubling as activation for Galatine's special features, and also to guard the blade's ricasso. the bottom of the blade's hilt can open to reveal a Dust vial chamber.
The sheath of Galatine is somewhat overwide for the sword, and is patterned with holes similar to that of the chamber for a flamethrower, with the exception of two grooves at the bottom of the sheath, designed to allow space for the triggers, and a spot on each side of the sheath, both of which open up to reveal additional Dust chambers.
Secondary Form: Flamethrower Mode: By sheathing the sword, and shunting its handle sideways, Galatine can be held in a manner similar to a gun, when one of the triggers is pressed in this state, Galatine's sheath will open up at the tip, and its flame function will create a wider continuous stream of fire, like a Flamethrower.
Tertiary Form: Jet Mode: By sheathing the sword, and pulling both triggers, the sheath will unfold to reveal the tip of the blade, and two extra jets of flame, powered by the Dust loaded into each side of the sheath, when pointed behind Gavin, this mode can be used to propel him forward at high speed.
Dust Functions: Galatine primarily uses fire Dust, by pulling one of the triggers when the blade has been loaded, it will be coated in flame, increasing its damage output.
Gavin typically keeps a few extra vials of fire Dust, and one vial of water Dust in a pouch in his weapon locker, which is worn at the waist on missions.
The blade can channel other Dust types, but with the exception of Fire and Water, they are rarely used.
Water: Sends a heavy stream of water along and off of the blade, acting as an emergency coolant and fire extinguisher.
Lightning: Channels Lightning along the blade, does not work through the sheath.
Ice: Freezes the blade, typically useless.
Gravity: Makes the blade heavier, typically useless.
History: Gavin forged Galatine at Signal Academy to suit his aggressive combat style.
