Title: Combat System
Post by: Veritas on October 24, 2016, 11:07:44 AM
So far, all I've seen is that character combat is based on a trust/honor system, but then I've seen people talking about oneshotting and always dodging. That begs the question: do we actually have a formal combat system, or is it straight-up all fluff, all description?

I believe it's a combination of both. You have to basically play out your chars in a reasonable way, taking into account both your capabilities and the enemy's. That's why ALWAYS dodging is very, very rare since something is bound to happen. Plus, some people (in the Vytal tourney, anyway) work it out behind the scenes, which allows for a much more fluid way of fighting.

Oneshotting shouldn't happen if your char got through approval, and saying you're definitely going to hit something is also a no-no - unless you've worked it out with the other person beforehand. This is probably why grabs usually require written permission - they require a certain level of autohit.

As one of the staff here, I'd like to welcome you to the RP Board (though you've been on here for a little bit).

As Nathan stated, and I'll also affirm, the combat system is based on a trust-based system. You play your character to what his/her ability is. This definitely means that you can't dodge every hit nor get a hit on someone every single time. This also means that you don't call auto-hits as those are not allowed.

If auto-hits or one shot kills continue to happen to the point that it goes against what your character's abilities would allow them, then either the person on the receiving end of it will let the person know (I.E. if Nathan made an auto-hit on my character, then I would let him know that he is not allowed to do something like that). However, if it keeps persisting, then the person in question will get reported to the Mods and then we'll look over the attack in question and talk to the person or even have their character pulled and re-evaluated, which happens at times....*Stares at Nathan* ;)

Hope that answers your questions. If you have any questions then please feel free to PM either myself or any of the other staff and we'll be more than happy to answer any and all that you ask.

As the second-longest serving active staff member, and longest serving active administrator, I'd like you to know that it's been discussed, at length, by the staff... and down that road lies naught but pain, hardship, and sorrow...

On a less problematic note, thanks for the welcome, JJB. ;D I think I'm going to enjoy working with all of you. Also, Vox, Umbra's showed me a few people's failed attempts at creating OP characters, and I have to say, I'm a great fan of your work.

Now, that is of course just a subjective look at things, but I would absolutely despise having a rigid, fixed combat system like those of the typical pen and paper RPG in place. I came to thise site in order write stories and interact with others, and I am willing to put my trust into those I interact with to 1)possess common sense and if needed the ability to have a constructive discussion about things if there is the need to talk about one's actions, and 2)have the balls to call me out on bullshit that I might be doing, because everybody fucks up at times, but if nobody talks about it nothing will change. And I will say that in the vast majority of cases, both points are very well satisfied by this community, with those problems that arise from the way things are being resolved very swiftly.

If on the other hand there would be a fixed combat system, then I would feel robbed of alot of the liberty I could have during the interaction with other characters. If I would want to have a fight resolved by a die roll I would go and play D&D. But I want a fight to be resolved via words; by telling the story as it unfolds, without any weird restrictions. In the end, it's all about the participants communicating and figuring stuff out together anyway. Common sense and communication.

That makes sense. I'm used to the D&D combat system, so I'm gonna have to get used to trusting people with my character's safety, but keep an open mind, right? And if people fuck with me, I'm going to have absolutely no end of fun watching Vox, and I quote (more or less), "put an end to this scientific dick-waving by choking [them] with [his]."

Yep. I'm also going to have to resist taking advantage of that, but it shouldn't be too difficult.

...through which we must pass if we are to become stronger.

Not necessarily.

We had. We've considered pseudorandom number based systems. We've considered resource-based systems. We've considered hybrid systems. We've considered point-buy diceless systems.

It's safe to say we've weighed all the options on the RPG, and a combat system has been turned down each time.

HOWEVER...

The whole point of setting the site up like this is that it's incredibly expandable. So a spinoff with a point-buy system could find a home here.

Everyone likes seeing people get thrown to the lions.

I'll be the speshul person I am and say that I don't like seeing people get eaten alive. Corpses, however, are A-OK.

Not entirely, no. I genuinely don't like seeing others hurt. I don't really give a damn about myself out of necessity.

Well to be fair, I only auto hit twice in all my threads.

And I can't drop the edge. Count yourself lucky I made Nathan's life significantly better than mine :P
