Well, they weren't new or different, but a group of demon wasps was certainly a good way to start off a mission in Gwylan's opinion; it really set the tone for how the day was probably going to go. The fact that they were all going for him was just icing on the cake. Gwylan didn't even have to go looking for the fight; it was flying towards him on red wings of..... something suitably poetic that he'd come up with later when he wasn't in a fight.

Grabbing onto the trident with both hands, Gwylan wrenched it out of the ground with all his might and began to spin it, aiming to block the two Lancers on the outside with the blades and butt respectively. The middle two, though, he could do nothing about thanks to the angles, so he allowed them to hit him dead on, throwing himself back for added momentum and so the two Grimm would overshoot and keep on flying. He aimed to roll back onto his feet and spin around, swinging his trident with the intention of bisecting one of the Lancers. Continuing to spin, Gwylan hoped to turn back and face the two Lancers that hadn't managed to land a blow, marching towards them with haste.

Listening to Mogan while watching Gwylan move ahead of them, Suntalia simply shot a smile up at Mogan. "Being friends with a lot of people has its perks" she replied simply. Truth be told, after spending the last couple years at Beacon trying to befriend everyone she could, it did allow her to read people's expressions and reactions a bit easier. However, her remark was mostly to help reassure herself and calm her own emotions as she tried to lighten the tense air around them.

Listening to Mogan ask the professor a question, Suntalia immediately was on high alert a moment after both Mogan and Professor Ferus were on alert. Turning towards the oncoming Lancers, she was impressed at Mogan's quick reaction to the situation. "Let's flank them Mogan!" she yelled happily as she sprinted quickly to the right of the oncoming Grimm. She had heard of Lancers before, but hadn't had the rare opportunity to fight one. Seeing that they were fliers, that gave her a huge advantage against them. Watching the others spring into action, she did likewise, separating Firestorm into two shorter spears. Activating her semblance, she quickly got into position so that she would have an easy shot against the Lancer furthest from the others. "Heads up!" she yelled gaily as she aimed one spear towards the sky and the other at her first target. "Bang!" she said as a huge thunderbolt struck her spearhead and, travelling through the chain, shot straight at the first target.

Nathan didn't really pay much attention to his companion's idle chatter. The only thing about them he was watchful of was their position, keeping close while he continued to scan the surroundings. Concluding that there really wasn't anything close enough to jump them, he switched his weapon to gun form.

An unusual sound soon attracted his attention, though. He turned towards its perceived source; a small, black-ish speck far too fast to be Grimm. The man-made object soon arrived and unceremoniously slammed into the ground, reavealing itself as a rocket locker. The supervisor's, apparently. Nathan returned to his wary stance while professor Talandar kitted himself out.

When everyone seemed about ready to set out, yet another sound manifested itself, very shortly followed by a quartet of Lancers bursting forth from the trees. Well, here started the unusual things, huh. Lancers were usually spotted around Mistral rather than way up North of Sanus, right? There was definitely something weird happening for such a demon to trek across all that distance.

After briefly evaluating whether or not he should step in front of the most-glaringly targeted Gwylan to help defend, Nathan observed that everyone was, in fact, handling their own pretty well. Most seemed to lack a ranged solution, though. There lay his decision; shoot the Lancers with Ergia when they're farther away.

Ferus was initially prepared to take evasive action to return fire when the Grimm dropped in like unwelcome guests at a party. However, the alertness of the group rendered that action unnecessary. At first glance, all four students handled themselves well. Communication attempts from Mogan, always important when fighting in a group. And while Gwylan's decision to leave himself unarmed was duly punished, his response was quick and as a result, avoided half the initial potential damage. Things were going smoothly with the first years, and with the other two--What?

The hailstorm of bullets was too fast and too many for the unfortunate Lancer in Nathan's sights to evade, and was promptly eradicated from the face of the continent. Gwylan's slash was partially evaded, but his trident still nicked the wings of his target, and it dropped to the floor, no longer able to fly. It still had its natural weaponry, and shot its stinger at Gwylan.

Something strange was happening to the other two Lancers, however. Instead of turning into black powder and vanishing from the lightning bolt and Lightning Dust respectively, the Grimm were somehow unharmed. The Lancer struck by the bolt seemed to be pulsing with yellow light, as if it had somehow absorbed the electrical charge, while the Lancer struck by Mogan's electrified whip started changing. From its tail, where the barbed stinger usually resided, the flesh rent and tore itself, making way for another, equally lethal stinger. Both were launched at Mogan, somehow crackling with electricity.

TARGETS:
● Lancers x3 (1 shot down by Nathan)
   ● 1 Lancer downed by Gwylan, autohit allowed
   ● 2 mutated Lancers (Twin Stingers, Unknown)

Battle Data:
10% from launched stinger (Gwylan)
● 2 x 11%+3% per second from twin stingers+electricity (Mogan)

Talia could apparently shoot bolts of lightning, Nathan had shot down one of the lancers and Gwilan was about to deliver the coup the grace to another. In another moment he would have internally lamented his fate for not having the ability to shoot lightning bolts, but something else had caught his attention.

"Well, this is quite new... And absolutely unfair..."

Mogan complained, grumbling and with a puzzled expression, while the two lancers that had been stricken with elemental attacks by him and Talia not only came out unscathed but in addition seemed to mutate right before their eyes in response.
With a mechanical whirring sound, Mogan winded back his whip and studied the lancers while they changed. The third-year student wasn't all that concerned about this oddity, and he could have used that window to attack, but it would have been a pity to waste such an opportunity to study an unknown phenomenon such as dust/electricity absorbing Grimm. Especially if later down the line they ended up using the wrong kind of attack against a more dangerous Grimm or in a more dangerous situation.
So Mogan spoke loudly enough to be heard, but in a calmer tone compared to the one used before during the engage.

"Don't let these two escape, but don't kill them either just yet. Be careful of the other one! I don't want to jinx it, but I think there is a good chance it may just explode at any moment. It's never a good sign when something begins to pulse after eating a high amount of energy. This is too interesting to just..."

He had to stop because the lanced he had attacked had thought wise to retaliate by shooting him his two brand new and... apparently electrified...  stingers.
Cheeky bastard!
He thought and lashed both his arms in a diagonal chop to deviate the incoming stingers and prevent them from piercing his body, the back of his armored hands colliding with the sides of the stingers to redirect them towards the ground at his sides.
His intention was then to grab the "cables" that connected the abdomen of the grimm to the stinger to prevent it both from escaping and from firing again. Then Mogan would have tried to pull the lancer towards the ground, torn his wings off, and tried to understand why and how the Grimm had absorbed his attack. He was lucky that Give and Take were made with non-conducting materials (in order not to electrocute himself by mistake while handling his whip), or this operation would have been somewhat more bothersome.

Well, that was one of the little blighters taken care off. Gwylan couldn't help but hum in satisfaction as he began to make his way over to the Lancer that Mogan had whip-shocked? That seemed like a viable verb for what the older student had done. Talia, meanwhile, had flung a freaking lightning bolt at the other Lancer. That was one wicked semblance she had there, no two ways about it. There was no way anything could walk that off.

"Oh what the heck is this nonsense!?", Gwylan grumbled as he watched the two Grimm not only absorb his teammates' attacks but get stronger from them. That was completely unfair, flying off a lightning bolt. How had they managed to do that anyway? These were some weird Grimm alright. At least the one he'd his earlier wasn't going to super charge itself, that thing was good and-

Gwylan grunted as the stinger buried itself in his back. Oh, he was so going to get into trouble for not making certain that it was dead, but he'd been so sure. That had been a solid connection, Gwylan would bet his life on it, and he'd brought it down to ground. Damn it, this bug was definitely going to die now, couldn't risk it messing with one of the others as they dealt with the electrically charged Lancers. Turning on his heel and reversing his grip on the trident, Gwylan took off in a charge, covering the distance to the downed Lancer as quickly as possible, and aimed to bring the trident down hard so the outer prong buried itself in the Grimm's head while the others pierced the torso.

(OOC: Moving plot forward to keep things going.)

The downed Lancer got its comeuppances for stinging Gwylan, receiving a triple-pronged trident though the head and torso before scattering to the wind. The other Lancer that attacked thankfully didn't understand the difference between conducting and non-conducting material, and as such had its attack knocked aside harmlessly by Mogan's gauntlets, before being pulled to the ground. The remaining Lancer that had absorbed Suntalia's lightning bolt had began moving forward, before a powerful blast of wind knocked it straight into the trunk of a tree hard enough to kill the Grimm, its ominous pulsing fading away with the vaporising body. If the Hunters cared to turn around they would see Professor Talandar wielding his lance in the direction of the attack, ejecting the used Air Dust crystal.

The remaining Lancer would be landlocked, an easy target for any weapon to strike its body while Mogan held its stingers. No other signs could be seen that any reinforcements would be showing up.

TARGET:
● Lancer x1 (1 impaled by Gwylan, 1 killed by Ferus)
  ● Autohit allowed on remaining lancer

OOC: Sorry for the delay! Was trying to figure out how to get on the site.

Slightly surprised by the fact that the Lancer absorbed her attacked, Suntalia paused for a moment to soak it all in as well as observe her teammates proceed to fight the newly changed Grimm. As a smile creased across her face, she couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement at the thought of a new type of Grimm right before her eyes. "Well...guess to place B" she remarked, laughing as she ran straight towards the last one that was being held down by Mogan. "I call dibs on this one!" she yelled happily as she reconnected Firestorm into one. Jumping into the air, she slammed her spear straight into the creatures writhing thorax. Giving a big dimpled smile to Mogan, she pulled the spearhead out and stabbed the Lancer in its head, to finish the job. "Not bad of a start, don't you think?" she inquired, a laugh proceeding right after.

As Nathan looked to the remaining targets to decide if he could and/or should engage, the Grimm started behaving oddly. The electricity had been absorbed. What the fuck? that's literally impossible. Grimm couldn't use Dust. That was the most basic of basics about them. Yet here were these two lancers, not giving a shit. Nobody else gave a shit either, apparently, since apart from the initial surprise of attacks not working, Nathan was the only one seriously taken aback. Well, that he could see, even though his face probably didn't diplay it that much. Mogan even wanted them captured, not dead! Not only was this a bad idea with ordinary Grimm, these weren't even Grimm at all!

After every single one was taken down, Nathan having merely kept up his attention by being ready to support anyone, anytime. In the end, though, his help wasn't needed. When everything settled down, he spoke up, his voice failing to be anything other than calm. "It's a horrible start. What the fuck was that? Grimm can't use Dust. Those weren't Grimm. Screw capturing normal Grimm, I don't want whatever these non-Grimm things are 'captive' close to me."

"And there it goes our opportunity to understand more about this strange reaction of certain Grimms to dust and/or elemental attacks."

Sighed Mogan after Talia happily killed it with a smile on her face and without any regard for his previous request of waiting before killing the abnormal Grimm. He let go of the stingers as they began to dissolve into black particles and put his armored hands on his hips with a slight frown.

"Well, it's too late to argue about it, but that was kind of a wasted perfect chance and a mistake that could cost us in the event of a future and more dangerous encounter. I wasn't suggesting to capture the lancer..."

The third-year said to Nathan, who had clearly expressed his opinion against what would have surely been a poor idea.

"... I simply intended to study an unknown opponent and discover more about his abilities and, hopefully, limits or weaknesses. For example, I wanted to test what would happen if he came into contact with more dust, of the same type or of a different one. Would it have been able to resist that too? Would it have changed again and in a different way in response to another kind of dust? Was there something visually different about that particular lancer that could have helped us recognize a similar one?"

Mogan made a brief pause to breathe deeply.

"I don't want to sound pessimistic, but now we can't run the risk of using elemental attacks on Grimms anymore. Unless there is just one of two of them and we are confident we can handle whatever changes they manifest if they indeed change again. Let's just hope we don't run into a big group of Grimm with too many of these abnormal ones or, even worse, a big group with only abnormal ones or, even worse, a big group with one or two big mutant Grimm."

Another pause.

"Oh, wait... Sorry, that does sound pretty pessimistic. My bad people. It's just that I get carried away when I can't satisfy my curiosity. Anyway Talia, I agree that this hasn't been a bad start at all. At least we have an idea of what we could be up against and we can imagine why others may have had trouble in this area."

Mogan the turned to the professor, who had previously dispatched of the pulsating lancer and now wielded a big lance.

"So Professor, what should we do now?"

(OOC: Skipping Dusty as requested.)

The Professor strode briskly up to the group, lance folded and stored on his back. "After observation, I think both Nathan and Mogan have a point. Indeed, Grimm cannot use Dust. This is proven over many, many decades of fighting and observing. However, Mogan's point may hold water. Both Lancers that...mutated...were hit with an element, in this case lightning, not merely Dust. Following the fact that Grimm cannot use Dust, that is the most logical explanation. As to why..." the teacher frowned, "There was nothing of the sort in the reports I received. For now, once again, Mogan's advice is sound. Avoid using elemental attacks if possible, as we know that is one of the triggering factors for mutation."

During the group's fight, the sun had fully risen, shining its glorious rays over the small stretch of forest before Mountain Glenn. "It is high time we got moving, students. Follow me and try to keep your thoughts positive, if possible." the professor said before setting off in the direction of the ruined city.

OOC: Sorry for the delay! Was on vacation the past week or so.

Listening to the others, Suntalia sat on a nearby boulder and swung her legs idly. The thought of not using any elements did put her in a bit of a predicament, but it just meant that she would have to let her fighting abilities shine instead of her semblance. Hearing the professor give the command to move out, Suntalia merely saluted him. "Aye aye Professor Fer!" she exclaimed as she got up and skipped a bit to catch up.

Giving a beaming smile to the other students, Suntalia motioned for them to follow before letting out a light jingle of a laugh as she caught up to the professor. "Keeping my thoughts positive is my specialty!" she proclaimed, looking up at the professor as she continued to skip in pace with him. "So what made you want to be a professor?" she inquired, seeing that it looked like they had time to kill as they grew nearer to the abandoned city. Despite her happy demeanor, she still kept a close eye on the forest as well as the city in the event that another group of Grimm could potentially come out at any moment.

(((HOW DARE YOU BE SORRY FOR BEING ON VACATION)))

Nathan followed the team, listening to them while keeping an eye out for danger. To that end, he switched Ergia back into staff mode. While he actually paid attention to his teammates, he found there to be very little to comment on. Instead, he mulled a bit more over the enemies they'd just encountered. There were two possibilities.

One; Grimm are not known to be capable of physiologically manipulating elemental attacks of any kind. Thus, these mutated ones would've needed semblances, which require Aura, which requires a soul, which makes them not Grimm at all. Two; these Grimm had somehow been forcibly implanted with technology.
