The Visionary (And free for all) AMA
« on: March 12, 2017, 07:23:45 PM »
First off I have to apologise for the title, but let's be honest I had no choice.
Original post: ShowHide

Anywho I've started a few general question threads which went pretty well but hadn't made one for me specifically so figured I should. If nothing else just to add it to the signature.

The usual deal, feel free to ask any questions for my character s   (well there's only Diana atm) or me.

While the title was just meant as a shitty pun this thread has been running a bit different than the others and I like it. After all idea with the AMA threads in general is to learn more about each others characters (and the users).

So if you post a question here I will always respond to it. However all questions here will also be open for anyone else who wants to respond, so we can see some varied responses. (Would be boring to just hear from one person) If there ends up being several questions going at once just use the horizontal line [ hr ] to distinguish between them.

How about favourite book genre then favourite book for both of you? Operating under the assumption that all books in our universe also exist in RWBY I guess.
No criticism is too harsh so hit me with your best shot.

I honestly don't know what genre I prefer it tends to be a case of "I'll know it when I see it". Favorite book series has to be Harry Potter just from growing up with it. Favorite author is easily Douglas Adams, (Hitchhikers Guide, Dirk Gently and my favorite Last chance to see) I've never found anyone that can write like him. As to more recently I loved the Martian read it several times.

Now for Diana, with the assumption of real world books:
"I try to read a bit of everything really though I do tend to gravitate towards high fantasy, but I still enjoy some non-fiction, comedic, crime or mystery novels. As all other avid readers my favorite series is the Lord of the rings, I know incredibly original right.. There's just something about that world, I'm still working on The Silmarillion admittedly. I've tried Song of Ice and Fire as its been really popular recently but it got a bit too depressing for me. Not that I can't handle anything that is a bit sad or anything, just something about those ones. For instance I adored the Fault in our stars" the only romance novel she was going to publically admit to reading.

Cheers King :D interesting to consider real world books in RWBY, had a thought about the same for you / Calen?

I'll reply here and just hijack your AMA.

Yea I didn't want you to have to think up book series for Diana although maybe we'll get more of an understand of the in world pop culture once world building gets back up.

As for myself I'm a lot like Diana, mostly a generalist with a lean towards fantasy, real fantasy not any other this 'realistic fantasy' stuff, with Glen Cook's Black Company series as my favourites. I say I read Sci-fi as well but I missed most of the greats, Asimov, Herbert, Hamilton, ect, so I don't have too much to say there. Although they might not technically be books I adored Neil Gaiman's The Sandman and consider it to be one of, if not the, best literary work of all time.

Calen will hesitant for a fair while before answering, not having really thought about the question before. 'Characters are what interest me. I normally find genre to be meaningless but I do tend to lean toward period fiction as it's where I find the characters act the most truly in their worlds. Those with a strong political or philosophical bents are my favourites but I've enjoyed books like the Three Musketeers because of their defined characters as much as I did Tolstoy's semi-philosophical discussion in War and Peace and and Ernest Heminway's postmodernist overtones in For whom the bell tolls.'
No criticism is too harsh so hit me with your best shot.

Just realised the audiobook for Last Chance to See is on youtube, can't recommend that one enough (Might not be for everyone of course).

I'll reply here and just hijack your AMA.
I'm all for that, just love learning more about mine and other people's characters.

I'll jump on the bandwagon.

For Diana: What is her opinion on contemporary art, and why?

For yours truly: What is your favourite game? It can be ANYTHING from board games to what have you.

Welcome to the bandwagon, the more the merrier :D

"Contemporary? Like modern art? I have to admit I'm not too familiar with it, not that many galleries left in Mantle I'm afraid. Saw some when I was at the Atlas academy and... well there were a lot of pieces that I didn't get, just seemed like random paint. However some of them were fantastic, portraits made of just twine wrapped around nails, and grim sculptures with fire dust for the eyes. My absolute favorite were the more minimalistic ones, I really wish I knew the name of the artist but they managed to completely capture a pose or a face with a single line of ink. It's kinda mind blowing to see how some people just understand what is the essential part of a form, they can express so much from what seems like nothing."

As for my favourite games regardless of format? Gods where to even begin. Actually top favorite is easy, has to be DnD. It's something I've only been getting into for the past 2-3 years and nothing compares, It's social, engaging and creative in a way nothing else is (Been meaning to test some other systems at some point though for now it's only been DnD 5e). For video games I have to say Bioware. Never quite as engaged as with Kotor, Mass Effect or Dragon age (Though have to give a shout out to Overwatch right now, that game is faaar to much fun). And traditional board games It's going to have to be social deduction games (The Resistance / secret hitler) or ticket to ride.

Thanks Manic, any of your characters that are opinionated on Contemporary art? Or how about your favorite games?  As with Kingnoname I'd love for people to hijack the thread (would be boring to just have me answer questions without hearing what other people think).

"I personally don't care much for what people call 'modern art' these days, although I suppose everyone has their own opinion. Bits and bobs of random color, materials and whatever the artist can lay their hands on, really. I much prefer 'art' in the old sense of the term, where you can actually see the complex design of the painting or picture, layers of colour over each other, multiple lines criss-crossing to form the perfect sketch."

"U-um, contemporary art? I'm not really sure what you mean...Like one of those wonky-looking sculptures that everyone seems to be going on about? Uh...they're....interesting, I guess? I'm sorry, I don't really know what to say...Can I go back to playing now?"

"Contemporary art? That utter rubbish? Where you throw a shoe on the ground and suddenly you're swimming in a million Lien? You've got to be ****ing kidding me! Can't believe anyone with half the brain of a mouse even wastes their time looking at the stuff! I mean, it's string wrapped around nails! There isn't even a pattern to it! What, was the artist smashed when they made this?"

"I don't really mind it, as long as people appreciate art. The calligraphy I draw attracts strange looks sometimes when people walk by, as it is a complete strange language, but it does help improve my Semblance. Can't say anyone else can claim art helps their fighting. I don't think I'll be doing any of that contemporary art any time soon though...Maybe I might give it a go after Beacon."

Games? Oh boy. For the past few years, my opinion on games has vastly differentiated, but I've mostly stuck to F2P games, only buying one or two that cost money. My favourite game probably has to be Starcraft 2, something you have to have heard of, since you use Battle.net. It's a real-time strategy game that has you building and controlling a sci-fi army, and it actually helps your reflexes, I reckon. TF2 has to take a close second (I spent over 700 hours on that game) but I'm sad to see Overwatch "overtake" it. Not to say Overwatch is a bad game, quite the opposite. (Hog and Ana ftw) Oh, and laugh at me all you want, but Pokemon Sun is definitely third. The way they seamlessly changed the format the game had been running on for 20 years with nary a complaint is absolute genius.

Well, another question. Favourite sport for both of you? (And yes, I'll count hunting Grimm as an answer for Diana)

As usual sorry for taking a while to respond, a lot of coursework and revision to do atm so there may be some delays in my responses.

Oh yeah I love Starcraft 2, well I've only ever touched the singleplayer stories (Though those are fantastic) and the co-op missions, never done the actually playing against people online way too stressful. (Been catching some of Totalbiscuits monthly tournament). And yeah i played a fair amount of TF2 but haven't touched it once since Overwatch came out (Mercy ftw). Haven't tried the new pokemon but it seems good.

Favourite Sport
"I don't, I mean I don't think I really have any? I guess the closest would be just shooting at the range but that's just part of being a Huntress. I've watched some of the various tournament fights but again you kinda have to when you're a student right? I'm really not a competitive person, and i prefer to avoid fighting grim unless necessary so wouldn't really go hunting either."

We might be different when it comes to reading and opinions of art, but here I'm the same as Diana. Last sport i took part in was rowing but that was quite a while ago now I just do jogging and such for health. Only thing I've watch of sports isn't even a sport its e-sport like starcraft.

How about for your cast of characters :D?

If I respond with all my characters I'll fill the whole page, so I'll choose from my cast. If you don't hear from them, assume they're off on something or can't be bothered. :D

"Oh, sport? Does e-sports count? Because that would definitely be my favourite. If not, then, well, um...I'd say netball. But please say e-sports counts!"

"I don't really do much sport. Much prefer to spend my time in the gym, better way to build up muscles in my opinion. However, I have to say, rugby seems VERY attractive. A legal way to knock people's heads into the ground? My kind of sport. Otherwise...something that builds up endurance/muscles will do."

Currently my preferred sports are swimming and badminton, both of which aren't major sports where I'm studying (Scotland...Rugby/Hockey/Cricket are the 3 main ones). I would love to actually do E-sports as a career, but those who do are INSANE. Have you seen their APM (actions per minute?)

Question for Diana: If you didn't go to Beacon, which other academy would you go to and why?

Don't feel the need to comment with everyone, just whoever you feel like. Yeah the APM of the pros is insane, glhf if you want to try your hand at that.

Combat Schools
"That's an odd question for me to answer, in a way the answer would be Beacon as it is the other school.. sorry that made no sense, ehh, before I came here I spent a bit less than a semester at the Atlas Academy. I'm from Mantle so it seemed natural to setup on the same continent, besides we didn't really have the money for me to study abroad then. It was quite nice there but it didn't fit, they had a very scientific focus on everything and it was a bit much for me. So I took the trip down here instead."

What about your characters, they're all from Beacon so any of them that ever considered anywhere else?

"I was originally from Mistral, and I attended Haven Academy until the end of my third year. If not for a certain...incident, I would probably still be in Haven with my old team. I guess, if I couldn't have gotten into Beacon, I'd still be in Haven. However...let's just say things were awkward back then, and I do not wish to elaborate any further on why."

Question for you: do you prefer creating characters over RPing with the one(s) you currently have?

Hey really sorry for the delay. Had to write about 30 pages for my dissertation so haven't had time for much else. .

Diana had no intention to get more of the story from Kei Tsz Fung, however she was relieved to hear that she wasn't the only one to change schools after an "incident".

Its an interesting point and a mixture of both. The straight up answer would be RP with the ones I have just because it takes me a long time to create character (here or DnD etc.). That being said I do love creating characters but it takes me ages to get satisfied with them as I have practically no creative writing experience before I started here. I do try to emphasise having an interesting but not edgy background, I've wanted to write one with a more tragic background but don't trust myself to do it well. In general I want there to be enough differences between me and them that its interesting to explore(Sexuality, religion, hobbies etc.), but still similar enough that I can relate.

You've got quite a few characters so safe to assume you like making them or?

Yeah you assumed correctly, I love creating characters that I can call mine own (I think all my characters are at least loosely based off me in one way or another). One things is that I will not make an edgy character, ever. Setsuna actually started off halfway as one of those cliche characters, but I decided to scrap the idea and start from scratch, and boy am I glad I did. I am aware that I haven't done much with my characters (apart from Setsuna), thus I have slowed it down a notch and trying to get my characters involved in threads, as well as getting them teams. Highly grateful to the other members of Team ASTC for getting together so quickly and creating a great story so far. Oh, and:

"Thank you for being polite, but please, just call me Kei. No need to be so formal, we are just talking after all. Apologies if I came off as a little cold."

As I've been saying in some other threads sorry for the particularly slow response time due to illness and exams. Will finally be free in a few weeks so I can back here proper, and considering the last question I'll actually be able to make some progress on some more characters then.

And have to agree with avoiding edgy characters, though want to try some more tragic stuff at some point but still far too new at this to do it justice (Even Diana can be rather cliche at times but do try to make her interesting).

Do you have an example of what sorta things you have based on yourself?
