Title: Participation and Procrastination[1/1 PvP practice thread]
Post by: Siuwa on June 08, 2018, 11:04:26 AM
Catalina Glenn went down to the Beacon stadium and started looking for a sparring partner. Experiences told him someone will likely be already there waiting, but today apparently the implication of it comes true instead: He is the one already there waiting for a partner. Time to sit and wait I suppose.

With that Cat sat down, opened his scroll, and started a game... a video of Zabar Aga's moves in the Grand Finale (http://rwby-rpg.rwbyfanon.com/index.php?topic=1094.0) of the Vytal Festival Tournament with professor's commentaries. Dang it. Catalina had caught himself doing this for a while now. Going to shooter range instead of the gym, polishing tactics assignments when he's supposed to be searching for set pieces against hand to hand fighters, anything qualifying as work that isn't helping his mid-long term objective: Having a go at and beating Zabar. Many want to do it for the title and fame, but Cat had a personal objective. Really. It'll be for a... friend.

Come to think of it, do Nathan Eau consider him a friend? Cata was skeptical about the public outcry after Gray's incident and earned the slight ire of a few of his friends because he misspoke at his room, but most importantly he was suspicious at Jack because he seemed to be seizing this opportunity to his own advantage. So when he was fighting Catalina anticipated positively about him and he delivered. A skilled, friendly and considerate huntsman-in-training. It is natural to respect him out of sportsmanship, right? Or maybe there's some rationalizing going on?

With that drift of mind, the video already played halfway and the more important parts of the match were passed. Cat turned the video back to the beginning and refocused, waiting for someone's arrival.

Nami was up early. The sun had just risen, and with the fact that there was no class today, the academy was left mostly abandoned and empty. With the limited possibilities that one could do so early in the morning, Nami decided to go to Beacon Stadium and practice a bit.

Just as he was about to enter the stadium, he was received with the loud voice of a professor. After a brief, thoughtful hesitation, Nami finally entered the stadium and soon saw where the voice came from. A black-haired boy sat not too far away from him, watching a video on his scroll.
"Can't you make it quieter?" Nami asked, wolf ears flat back against his head to shield the sound a bit.

"Oh, yeah, sorry, that was too loud for you isn't it." Catalina pauses and turns down the volume to the lowest she can comfortably hear, but then just puts it away and stands up instead. The last time he had one outside of class was called off because his opponent, no less than the semi-finalist Juno, had matters to attend to and called the match off, so he is eager to fight.

"So, we're both here to practice, and here's just the two of us." Cat presents Take That! and walks down the stadium to the arena, walking to one side of the arena as per usual, holding his gun but not pointing it at anything. "My name is Catalina Glenn. And... spar?"

"The Name's Nami." He introduced himself, just loud enough for Catalina to hear. And that was pretty much everything he said, there was nothing more left to say. He answered his fight request by walking to the other side of the arena. He raised his head and gave a cold- but also combative glance to his opponent. Catalina. Except for his weapon, he knew nothing about him, no skills, no fighting style, no semblance. Well, he couldn’t  say much about the weapon either. It looked like a sledgehammer-gun hybrid. He should definitely first fight on defense and watch his moves. With a jerk of his arms, the claws from the steel cases on his wrists extend and Nami turned into a fighting position, waiting for his opponent to make the first move.

Nami... I never paid any real attention to that name. I supposed having that many people all in one class will do that to you. All that I see is the claws so a very close range fighter probably?
"Nice to meet you. Go!" Catalina said, raised his sniper and fired off one tentative shot to probe the reaction of the fight at hand.

The shot echoed through the arena and with that the fight started. The field was clear, no room for cover from shots, but space to dodge. Actually, that wasn't a thing, the opposite to be honest. Back when he still lived in the lab, most of the fights he had to go through were also in rooms like these, but not many of his opponents had firearms though, so that could turn out to be a problem. His ears point up as the shot fell and with a single step he jumped forward, not having much of a problem avoiding the shot at this distance. The path to his opponent was a straight line, in which he also rushed towards him, but not with the intention of attack him yet. He still had a good distance to Catalina, so he shouldn't worry about the sledgehammer, his only problem was the rifel part.

Straight for the kill huh? The meleeier the merrier.

Cat tensed up at Nami jumping forward and started rushing, but since close combat is what he needed to practice it was certainly welcome. Cat aimed again, now taking his time and aim down the scope, hoping his marksmanship expertise would let him land hits properly, at Nami's shoulder this time. Luckily an open area not only meant a straight rush but also a clear shot, so he expected to get some success with the two shots he was able to make.
As the threat of the claws grew closer to Cat he switched his weapon into the hammer form and prepared to attack tor dodge. This will be his first time putting his formulated close quarter plans to test.

Nami saw the shots, but didn't have enough time to dodge. Both shots grazed him, but he avoided a direct hit. Without further focusing on any shots he continued to run towards Catalina. Nami was almost right in front of him and lowered his head to feigned a direct attack, but jumped quickly to the side in the last second, taking the impetus of the jump for a spin and was now directly behind Catalina. He saw that he switched to his hammer, but that was no reason to neglect his defense, not yet at least. His strength lies in melee, but who knows, maybe his opposite was also talented close combat. His right hand was raised and ready to strike straight down.

Cat stopped internally monologuing and shifted his focus from his (far) future opponent to the imminent contact as they get into range. He tried to sidestep Nami but in the other direction and ends up still facing each other. This is where he should use his range advantage.
Elbowing the claws with his left arm and changing the received hit from a slash to a stab, Cat switched his grip into one that faces the opponent with his barrel/handle and pokes it into the throat, keeping range while trying to choke Nami with such a strike. As the hammer slide down his grip, he would then swing it back trying to hit the probably dodging head in the other direction.

Nami was surprised by Catalina's move to use his arm to 'block' the blow, but didn't let that distract him. This fight turnted very intense very quickly, from this point on there was no going back, Nami was fully focused on the fight and nothing, not a single thing, could change that.
Nami noticed something about Catalina's stance that could give him a clear advantage, if everything went well, but he would certainly have to take one or another blow. As Catalina poked the handle of his weapon against his neck, Nami's free, left hand reached to grab his opponent's wrist. As soon as he grabbed it, he would put his strength into a 180° rotation, putting his whole weight on his right foot for more impetus, and slam Catalina over his shoulder and into the hard floor below them.

Catalina had to be quick to react by the time he is being pressed against the ground. He knows going directly hand to hand with a hand to hand specializer would be disastrous for him. So time to break out his semblance.

A Catalina blue-colored spike made of Aura extended from below Cat and started taking jabs at the underside of several spots of the target body, notably the armpit and the wrist on Nami's left arm. This can hopefully help him disengage and roll to diagonally behind the opponent, allowing Catalina to promptly unleash the flamethrower function with the top of the head of his hammer.

Nami let go and jumped back a step. Where did those things come from? Two of the spikes hit his wrist, which he embraced with his other hand. Had to be his semblance. And now he had missed the chance to disarm him while lying on the ground. But he had no time to think about it as it started to get hot very fast. He managed to dodge the fire with a quick roll to the side. It were situations like these that make having a tail so inconvenientl. But now the warm-up was done. He planed on winning, and he'll do anything to do so.
He continued dodging the flamethrower with more rolls and jumped to the side, always moving and coming closer to Catalina. He didn't even had to be so close to him to carry out his plan. After another roll, Nami held both hands out in front of him and the small bullet hole on top of the steelcases became more visible. Catalina wasn't the only one using firearms, and he was about to find that out for himself! Still in motion to escape the heat of the flamethrower, the bullets began to shoot out of the tube.

Hur that's quick! This is a wide spray and he managed to outrun my aim!
Whit such quick evasion Catalina reckons he need to get closer to be able to spray on him. But that is rendered irrelevant when he was shot through the flames instead, hitting him squarely in the face. The first two did anyway, Cat rushed to transform the sledgehammer back to it's sniper form while deflecting the rest. He quickly strolled backwards to a small distance away and started firing again, with more effort at aiming than dodging as he assumes the more suppressive fire would keep that at bay. You might also have a gun like I do, but my bullets are faster, hit harder, and are more accurate, putting me at a significant firepower advantage!
Cat predicts that Nami might change his tactics again soon, so he prepares to use one of his other created set pieces to combat in case the range closes again.

Nami kept the distance to Catalina for the time being and tried his best to avoid the shots. If it continues like that he would soon run out of breath and had to switch to his semblance. But then there's the flamethrower, that goddamn flamethrower. He had to do it differently. As soon as he saw a opening in the gunshots, Nami got ready to storm again, jumping from left to right and back again to make it harder to hit him. As he ran, he jerked his right arm and the metal claws retreated and switched to a dagger blade, while the second copy of the weapon remained at the clawed version.

He really is fast. Cat, while annoyed from not being able to hit consistently, is partially delighted to see Nami charging again. Since evasive maneuvers are hard to intercept, he decided not to intercept... directly. Catalina activated his semblance again, this time as the shape of a sharp blade. It extended past Nami and then started sweeping left and right to get him. With that, he can maybe buy himself some time and maybe get off one shot to further tire him out, if not doing damage. This is his semblance at the basic stage, so any stress is small and he could maintain this level of usage for quite some time.

Nami hissed as he felt the first swing of the aura-blade. He'd only been able to see the attack briefly before it actually hit and couldn't dodge in time. He slid across the floor for a moment, risking another blow, but managed to block it off with his dagger in the last second. Now he stood there. He had already lost more aura than he wanted to, and he couldn't get close enough to disarm him. As he continued blocking the aura-blade, he felt a brief pain in his leg.
Damn...! That was not the first time he forgot to focus on his opponent, and that was also not the first time he had to take a hit for it. He couldn't go on like that, his aura sank faster and faster and he was running out of breath.
Okay, let's get real, Nami thought as he took another dash at Catalina, still blocking the Aura-blade whenever it came to close. While he was running, shining, white light started to appear on his skin and clothes, and not a second after he was in his wolf form. As long as you could call it a wolf. Yes, the appearance itself showed a white wolf, but the size, well, let's just say it feels like a shire horse was standing in front him.

Catalina felt like he had been karate chopped in the head when the blade was blocked, but it didn't break just yet and Cat reacted by retracting and swinging at Nami elsewhere. It get intercepted every time but he is satisfied that he got one direct sniper hit out of it.
But then he transformed into almost a Beowolf lookalike with what can only be his semblance, and he couldn't evade it in time and got hit right in the torso, only evading the bite with a semblance pushing himself on the ground away. At this close snipers can't reliably hit so he had to use the hammer again. Taking an overhead swing on the head of the Beo... Nami, Cat prepared to use his semblance to a greater extent.

Nami had his ears flat back against his head and bared his teeth. There came the attack he had been waiting for. He was fortunate that Catalina decided not to go for the flamethrower again, otherwise he would have been in some serious trouble, but luck was on his side. He growled as the hammer approached him in a high speed, but he didn't move away. Without hesitating for a second, Nami opened his mouth and aimed at the arm Catalina hold the hammer. His goal was to only disarm him, but if it gave him the opportunity to harm him at the same time, he would use this.

Cat was really afraid of that bite. He released his hammer but still got his arm bitten, but he managed to retrieve his hammer with his semblance, which went clockwise and came aroumd delivering a faster swing this time near the temple equivalent of Nami. In the front Cat poked at his eyes with two more spikes, figuring that Aura woiuld protect Nami from any real damage, and himself kept his distance to avoid such threatening move from happening again.

Nami's triumph was short liven as his opponents attack made contact with his eyes. With a noise that sounded like a mix between whining and growling, he jumped a step back, right into the spinning hammer. Okay, bad move.
He shook himself, puffing up his fur and making him look a little bigger than he already was anyway. With a mighty leap forward, Nami once again ran towards Catalina, the same white lights appearing on him as earlier. Back in human form, he deliberately slid past Catalina and found himself at her back. During this movement, the blades from his steelcases changed to long sword-like blades with a curved-diamond shape at the tip, with which he attacked.

Cat totally didn't expect that Nami can turn himself back so he duck under and past him, turn back and despite the added distance still got hit by one of them and managing to block the other. Cat noted how his exhaustion is already getting to him and he got slower, so he opted to decide the fight with his semblance.

Launching four blades at once all with aiming maneuver is a huge drain and will all but guarantee that Cat will be left defenseless at the end of this one pulse of attack. Under his figuratively cracking skull Cat launched his decisive assault, with four of them moving in from each lateral direction including one that loops over from above to behind, swing frantically until he wins or collapses.

The fight was coming to an end. Nami saw that Catalina was already exhausted, but he could say the same about him. The options for his next attack were limited when Catalina re-used his semblance and summoned the same arua blades as before. Just there were more this time. Nami had two options, switching back to his wolf-form, being faster but also more likely to be attacked due to his size, or staying in the human form and shoot.
Catalina looked very exhausted and his attack would certainly break if he hit him with a few shots, but for that he would also have to take a few hits himself and this would most certainly reduce his aura to a point where he wouldn't be able to fight anymore. He was definitely in a hopeless situation, but he wouldn't give up without a fight.
Nami jumped forward just before the aura blades threatened to hit him, just above the one directly in front of him, and started shooting. He was only able to fire a few shots when the aura blade from above hit him and knocked him to the side. Before he had time to stand up, the other aura blades came back and rammed him in the other direction, where he slid a few meters on the ground before finally coming to a stop.

Catalina looks relieved at the sight of the blades' contact, but then he didn't expect a final retaliation and took the full force of it. He is more than sure that both of them were in the red, but that's only a needle of thought among a haystack of pain and nausea as he collapses onto the ground.

After what feels like an eternity Cat recovered enough, and he first asks, "I suppose we should call this a draw?"

Nami lay on his back and looked at the ceiling, which doubled, then quadrupled. Groaning softly, he put his arm over his eyes and tried to suppress the spinning feeling.
That's what I get for not taking the pill... echoed his voice in his head.
"Yes, yes... draw sounds fine," Nami muttered, not sure if Catalina could hear him. It took a while until the dizziness subsided and Nami sat up. "Do you have something to drink?" He asked a little louder and opened a zipper of his jacket and pulled out a small jar. He opend the jar and took out one of the many purple-white pills. Oh, how much he hated those things. A few seconds passed in which Nami silently looked at the pill before closing the jar with the remaining pills again and put it back in his jacket.

Seeing Nami take his pill was a surprise. He doesn't know why and has no good guesses, but he did make for the water bottle, struggling to get up and limping to his it the seats, took it out and offered to the mentally assumed Faunus.

"What are those for?" Cat asked as he sat near his own backpack.

Nami hesitated for a second, before taking the water bottle. "Thanks," he said, swallowing the pill, followed by a big gulp from water bottle.
You could clearly see how Nami tensed up a little when Catalina asked her question and he looked at her "It's ... A health condition. Nothing too bad, just a little dizziness from time to time", he said and gave the bottle back.
"Interesting weapon you have there, did you made it yourself?" Nami asked to change the subject.
