Title: Foreign Delicacies [Closed]
Post by: Moth on July 31, 2018, 11:51:37 PM
The best thing about about the Vytal Festival, in Chantou's opinion, is the way it makes cultures mesh together. From the hot deserts of Vacuo, the temperate climate of Vale, to her far-off homeland of Mistral, they all manage to come together in a fantastic exchange of ideals every time the Vytal festival comes around, providing combat academy students endless opportunities they might've never been allowed otherwise. In Chantou's case, it was the fact she actually got to travel internationally - it was hard enough to afford a ticket to Vale when moving, so to get to visit Atlas for the duration of the tournament, and watch matches live? That was something she could've never experienced otherwise. So despite the cold weather, or the racist locals, Chantou was determined to enjoy herself.

And there was no better place to do that then the tent city that gets set up every Vytal Festival, cooking delicacies from all four kingdoms for visitors to enjoy. Hell, if Chantou was lucky, she might even manage to find something from home.

So Chantou had swapped out her usual croptop for a chunky red sweater, guaranteed to keep her warm in the cold weather. Thankfully her cargo pants and work boots still worked - she didn't' have to change her outfit too mouch, other than throwing on a heavy leather jacket. With her eyes hidden under a pair of mirrored sunglasses, the young woman easily passed as human - allowing her to enjoy the festival without any prejudice.

Now all she needed to do was find somewhere to eat.

While the Vytal festival was bond to be one of the highlights of the school year Diana couldn't stand the main attraction, the tournament. She had always been nervous about people fighting each other for sport, and having seen the disastrous consequences of the switcheroo fights she was now anxious during any match she watched. As such she had been dreading about having to attend the festival, that was until she learned that they would be in Atlas. Now that changed things. Her families finances may have improved from the poverty she grew up in, but they were certainly not to the point that she could just fly home regularly. A free ticket home, there was no way she could pass that up.

As the fights started she made sure to be there for all her teammates and close friends matches, not that they could really see her in the stands. However, once they were done she ditched the colosseum and went straight home to spend a few moments with her parents. For the occasion she was dressed up a bit more than most people around her. She was wearing a short sleeved purple dress that matched her eyes, with woollen stockings as well as the fire dust choker her father had given her to help with the climate, it was also one of the rare times she had put some effort into the little makeup she wore. Although reluctant to do so she also wore a holster with her weapon on her hip.

Unfortunately she couldn't stay there too long as she wanted to support some friends in their fights later that day, so after an hour or two she made her way back to the tournament. On her way back she passed by the tents that serviced the festival, realising that she hadn't actually eaten anything that day she decided to stop and find something to eat.

If Mr. Royale had told him he'd be coming back to Atlas of his own will before, he'd have called him crazy. Now look at himself.

For someone who'd spent years in the wild evading Atlesian authority for a living, it was the strangest feeling to be wandering in amongst the same people without having to either run for his life or defend himself. Still, Yu was no stranger to the "hospitality" of the Atlesian community, so despite it being a multi-cultural event he still wore a surgical mask to cover his nose and whiskers, passing himself off as ill if questioned.

Even with his precautionary measures he was still far from inconspicuous; with his shabby and patched-up clothing he would have fit perfectly on the streets of some run-down alley, and no doubt attracted more than a few wary glances. Some were far from stealthy, but Yu chose to be oblivious to the more piercing glares.  After weaving in and out of the maze of tents that had been erected in the Amity Colosseum, the offensive atmosphere eventually got to him. Without much in the way of Lien to spend, he just decided to rest in one of the open seats near a food-selling booth. Maybe take a nap without being "escorted" off the premises for once.

A Mistralian Seafood and Noodle Booth? Oh fuck yeah!

There's a rare self-satisfied smirk to Chantou's face at her find, plopping herself onto a table in front of a large booth. Even if she'd been in Vale for only a short time, she'd definitely been homesick for good, real Mistralian streetfood - and if the smell from this place was anything to go by, she'd definitely found the motherload. Chantou waves down a waiter from inside, exchanging a few quick words, before the waiter hands a small paper menu - making Chantou's smile only grow wider.

After flicking glancing down the list and mentally settling on a choice - mostly various seafood dishes and a couple of types of dumplings, but they had one of her favorite fried octopus dishes from back home - Chantou places the menu back on the counter and glances around at the booth's other customers. There's a couple of random Atlesians looking squeamish as they poke their dishes, a student who looks like they just got out of a match, hair still smoking and everything, and- in a table a little ways off, a small dude in shabby clothing wearing- is that a surgical mask?

Chantou stares for another moment or two, though he wouldn't be able to tell with her gaze still hidden behind her sunglasses. After a brief internal debate she gives a silent sight to herself, before standing up- and crossing over to the smaller man, sliding into the seat next to him while placing the menu down front of him. "Your mask is crooked, dude- watch the whiskers on the left side."

Strolling through the various food stands, Diana was trying to figure out what she was in the mood for. Not wanting to eat the same as they had at Beacon she avoided any stands from Vale, and similarly avoided any food from Atlas simply because she wanted to save that for meals with her family. She had basically no experience with cuisine from Vacuo, it hadn't been too popular in Atlas considering the countries history with each other, and while she kept telling herself she would try it she usually wasn't in the mood for something completely unknown and today was no exception. So she tried to find something from Mistral. Finally deciding on a slightly smaller one that was out of the way and seemed to have a table or two free.

As she approached, she saw a woman in a leather jacket leave a booth to join another one, while her clothes were different her appearance was still unique enough that Diana felt fairly sure that she had seen her at Beacon before, though she wasn't completely sure and it wasn't like they had ever talked.

Glad to avoid sitting at the bar Diana was happy to take over the abandoned booth and started looking through the menu. As she started to look at the sushi selection she noticed a case for glasses still on the table. She was just about to pick it up and give it to the woman who had just left before it occurred to her that she may not have meant to leave the booth entierly, maybe she just wanted a quick word with whomever she was speaking to. Unsure of what to do she tried to keep an eye on her just to be sure of what was happening.

Sure enough, his mask was skewed. One small, delicate hand reached up to his face and readjusted its position until Yu was certain that it covered his Faunus features completely once more. "You have my gratitude, my lady." Now immaculate once more, he waited for the girl to return to her original seat until he realised she had no intention of doing so, whilst simultaneously noticing the new addition to his table in the form of a laminated menu. One glance at the list of foods on offer and Yu knew he'd be leaving hungry once more. Not that he wasn't used to doing so.

"I'm afraid you have me at a disadvantage...might I have the pleasure of making your acquaintance?" Yu inquired, his small yet bright eyes exhibiting enough curiosity to cover for the rest of his visage. As he did so, he took stock of this new person. Large red sweater which was guaranteed to attract attention in this white wasteland of a country, dark sunglasses despite the fact that there was literally no sun...something about her put Yu's honed instincts on edge. Just to be sure, he turned on his Semblance, focusing the active area directly in front of him.

"Chantou Rou, though Chantou's fine." She answers, a hint of amusement in her voice. She's never been referred to as 'my lady' before, but she's not going to complain - hell, she might even encourage it. "Hope ya' don't mind me joining you, it's just nice seeing a friendly face, y'know?" She explains, going to push her sunglasses up. Glittering compound eyes blink at Yu for the briefest moments, before she lowers them back down before anybody else has the chance to see.

"Besides, eatin' alone is no fun, so if you wanna choose somethin' off the menu it's my treat." She adds on, going to pat her pocket to indicate her wallet - and her brow briefly furrows as she realizes something is missing, twisting in her seat to attempt to locate the case for her sunglasses - which she left in the previous booth, which is now occupied by some human. There's a fifty-fifty chance she's seen her around Beacon before, but she's not going to risk approaching.

They're looking at the menu, she wasn't going to come back. Sighing to herself Diana figured that it would only be more awkward if she came with it in five minutes so it was time to rip the band-aid off so to speak, she picked up the case and made her way over to their table.

Seeing that they were mid-conversation, she decided to stop just far enough away that she couldn't hear anything specific. She waited until she caught the eye of one of them and then held the case up as she approached. "Sorry I don't mean to interrupt, but this case was left on my table and I wondered if it could be yours?"

Now that she was close she felt more confident that the woman had to be someone from Beacon, the man sitting next to her was wearing a mask so it was hard to tell. Not really sure how to continue the conversation or to excuse herself she quickly added "You wouldn't happen to be from Beacon, I can't shake the feeling I've seen you before". Realizing it might be considered rude to just address one of them she turned to the other and said "And you?", trying her best to seem friendly and inquisitive rather than nosey.

That explained everything, then. The glasses, Chantou's friendly hint. Yu let his semblance's field fade from existence as his eyes showed a sense of mirth and envy. Somewhat simpler to hide eyes than nose and whiskers. "You're too kind, Chantou, but--" he started talking, before a soft growl emitted from underneath the table. "Actually, I believe I will take you up on that offer." he said, somewhat embarrassed to be piggy-backing off a stranger's money. Food was still food though, and he'd had enough experiences with living off tree bark for a lifetime.

His perusing through the menu laden with strange yet eye-catching pictures was interrupted by yet another girl joining him - or rather, Chantou. "Coincidentally, I do indeed study at Beacon, although I originally hail from this frigid wasteland that has been given a human name of Atlas." Yu looked left and right to check that no Atlesians overheard him mouthing off at their esteemed, high-and-mighty continent.

Chantou's quiet as she lets Yu answer their new friend, but quietly knocks his knee with her own underneath the table, out of site. If he wants to stay on the lowdown, referring to Atlas being given a human name might not be the best idea."Ya' guessed right, sis." Chantou answers smoothly, reaching out to take the glasses case and tuck it into the pocket of her oversized jacket. "Up here to see the Vytal Festival - couldn't resist free entertainment, y'know?" She shrugs, before nodding her head towards a nearby chair. If she's from Beacon as well, there's a good chance she's not someone she and Yu need to worry about, so it wouldn't hurt to have her stick around if she's dead-set on conversation.

"You two mind introducin' yourselves?"

As Yu spoke Diana light up a bit before responding "Oh I guess we're in the same boat then. I'm also a student at Beacon and come from Atlas... well Mantle. Where about did you live?". While most of Solitas, with the exception of Atlas proper, could quite fairly be referred to as a frigid wasteland something about his tone did unease her a bit but she tried to not react to it.

"My name is Diana, Farran" awkwardly positioned to shake hands or anything she decided to give a quick curtsy before returning the question "And may I ask yours?"

As Chantou gestured to the chair Diana looked at each of the two seated before her "That's very kind, but I don't want to interrupt if you guys are catching up. I just didn't want you to lose your case."

"Yu Nanhai. A pleasure to meet you both." Yu inclines his head in a bow, since standing up to do a proper courtesy would just attract unwanted attention. As a matter of fact, his presence here was already a spotlight shining on him from above. He couldn't linger here for long. "I'm...not sure why I'm here, to be honest. Suppose I wanted to see if anything's changed since I left." He shook his head bitterly, his small eyes downcast. "Nothing has. I cannot say I am surprised either." Yu said.

There's a moment of silence before Yu takes into account where Diana's homeland is, and instantly backtracks. "My profuse apologies, Diana--I assure you I meant no offence to you or your family, wherever they may be. I am afraid my emotions got the better of me." Despite the tone used when referring to Atlas, his voice now carries genuine regret. "...Would you like me to leave?"

"Chantou Rou." She responds, barely nodding her head in Diana's direction. "Kinda' interestin' we got peeps from all 'round the world here. From Mistral myself."

There's a quiet moment as the mantis faunus watches the exchange between what she could only describe as two overly-polite nerds, before silently snorting to herself. Yu was a decent guy, and fairly amusing as well. Diana had a kind face and a sweet attitude, and being from Beacon at least severely lessened the chance of bigotry, so this was a risk she was willing to take. Besides, if worse came to worse, she's got a rental car in the parking lot she could drag Yu to. "Y'all can keep up this battle of manners long as you want, I'mma thinking of ordering food. Do either of you want anythin'?"

Diana was just about to suggest that if anyone should leave it would be her, so she was a bit embarrassed when Chantou called them out for their excessive manners, rather than making more of a scene she simply sat down with them.

She reached for a menu and was about to hide behind it but instead she gave a deep sigh and looked up at Yu. "I don’t blame you… I, I love Atlas, it's my home, but I’m not stupid. We’ve been poor enough to see the classism and seeing how we advanced but our Faunus neighbors didn’t, made our racism equally clear" realizing that she might have overshared she quickly added "Eh, what I mean to say is that you have nothing to apologize for, really." Still not pleased with how she had handled things so far she decided to go back to her original plan and hid behind her menu, shooting a short response to Chantou "Yeah, hoping they have some good sushi."

Yu damn near started salivating at the mention of sushi before realising that he had a mask on and that he could indeed do so. Still, one look at his eyes and anyone could see that something had clicked in the small faunus. ”…I hope so too. It would be splendid to savour what proper Atlesian cuisine tastes like for once.” he said, trying to hide his eagerness in his tone, all previous offences forgotten. Within, he was conflicted on what the proper course of action was. Lose decency and enjoy himself at other’s expense, or go home hungry but mentally content? He shook his head to try and clear his thoughts but they lingered.

As everyone seemed ready to order Diana started to look towards the waiters, hoping to catch their eye to make it clear that they wanted to put in their orders. Unfortunately, a slight glance or a meekly raised hand wasn't going to attract much attention. Trying to play it off as though she hadn't tried to call a waiter she stretched her slightly raised hand and looked around the table for anything to comment on, her eyes resting on Yu's surgical mask. "I don't mean to invade your privacy, but I have some basic medic training and as such have a fairly extensive first aid kit with me. So if you'd like some painkillers, anti-histamines, cold medicine or whatever just let me know." In an effort to make it clear that she was trying to help she pulled a bottle of rubbing alcohol for the pouch on her belt, applied some to one hand and offered the bottle to the other two. She shot a sideways glance towards a waiter walking past, but figured the others would take care of it.

Chantou stares on ahead as Diana and Yu make polite yet awkward smalltalk, feigning disinterest at their conversation. It was honestly kind of amusing, watching the poor girl attempt to navigate chatting politely with two strangers, while Yu dealt with outright social awkwardness. Guess this is what happens when you stick a bunch of strangers together at a dinner table. Her mask of solemnity stays perfect until Diana begins to talk about her past in Atlas, with her confession about the inherent nature of Atlas’ treatment of faunus. It’s enough to make the mantis faunus raise an entire eyebrow, turning her head to stare down Diana from behind her sunglasses with a slight tilt to her head, a curious expression on her face - and the corner of her mouth quirks up as the human awkwardly finishes, before the slight smirk vanishes as soon as it appears.

Sometimes you can find decent people in even the harshest environments.

With a bit more ease to her slouch in the chair, Chantou raises one hand and barks out a couple words in a harsh Mistralian language to signal the waiter Diana tried to previously flag - making the young man start and walk over to the table. Chantou points to something on the menu and exchanges a couple more sentences with the waiter in a foreign language, before setter her menu down on the table - apparently already completing her order. Time to get something to eat, and hopefully rescue Yu for a bit before Diana accidentally pressures him into taking his mask off.  “Sweet of ya’ to offer Diana, but I’ll pass. You two go ahead n’ order anythin ya’ want, within reason of course - it’s on me, spirit of the Vytal Festival n’ all.”

”My gratitude, Chantou.” Yu thanks the other disguised faunus at the table, before turning to Diana. ”And not to turn down your generosity, Diana, but it really is not serious. I do believe I will survive.” he says, before pointing at just about half the items on the menu, prompting a small frown from the waiter who doesn’t say much. Still, he dutifully notes down every item, probably wondering why this particular small man has ordered every single seafood item available on the menu.

Even though his company have shown themselves to be good hosts, and surprisingly friendly toward a complete stranger, he still keeps his Semblance up. Slipping his right hand under the table and into his trouser pocket, he feels for the familiar metal rods that make up his life-saving tool. Even if he didn’t have his net - wearing it would just attract strange stares from the public, as well as likely denote him as a Hunter - he’d still be able to defend himself adequately.

A bit apprehensive at her horrible conversation starter Diana had zoned out for half a second, caught in her neurotic self-criticisms so when the waiter was abruptly called she jumped a bit as she focused again. As Chantou spoke Diana was genuinely touched at the offer to pay for her food "Oh that's very sweet of you to offer, bu.. thank you, Chantou." she gave her a warm smile. Unsure of what to say to Yu when he turned down her offer she simply nodded at him and looked down at the menu. After Yu's surprisingly long order she handed her menu over to the waiter and simply said "Just a single caterpillar roll please, and some water."

Chantou gives Diana a nod of welcome, before leaning back in her chair - carefully balancing the thing on two legs, one leg planted against the table stem. She raises a questioning eyebrow at Yu when he orders approximately all the seafood on the menu, since he sure didn’t look like a cat faunus - must be some kinda aquatic mammal. Thankfully Diana’s lunch choice is a bit less expensive, so she’ll only be stretching her budget a bit. Still, the company’s pleasant - so she might as well enjoy herself.

“So, either of ya’ plan on competin’ in the Vytal Festival?” She questions, reaching inside her coat to pull out thin silver cigarette case. Popping it open, she puts one between her teeth and reaches for her lighter - before promptly remembering she has company.  “...y’all guys mind if I smoke?”

While Yu didn’t particularly like the smell of smoke, nor did he like smoking - it lowered average life expectancy too - Chantou was indulging his rather extravagant offer. So, he shook his head in consent, as well as to answer her first question. ”I’m afraid I’m not particularly keen on fighting in front of large crowds.” He said simply, but his words did not carry the full truth. Even though his two new acquaintances had so far been the most gracious of hosts, they were still newly acquainted. First impressions and appearances could be deceiving, and he was not dropping his guard.

Still, to continue the line of discussion, he turned to Diana. ”And what of yourself? From your previous actions one could be forgiven for assuming you are a medic, so if you were to enter any fights it would be team-oriented. Am I right in guessing so?” Yu said politely. Still fairly new to the whole ‘socialising’ aspect of life, he found a small satisfaction in deducing what little tidbits he could from everyday appearances, though not always accurate.
