[sSR] Initation: Team LILY
« on: August 12, 2022, 06:46:30 PM »
As the students had been lined up at the edge of the Beacon cliffs a tall and well-built figure approached the podium, Alban Inverno, the headmaster of Beacon. While he did not introduce himself the sense of authority emanating from his movements was enough to inform those who did not recognize him.

“Adaptation” he let the word hang in the air as silence fell on the students “is perhaps the most fundamental quality of those who survive in our profession. It is a trait that is rarely tested through education, whether at school or at home, and one you can no longer afford to be ignorant of." He spoke in a calm, dispassionate tone. "When you land in the forest, the first person you make eye contact with will be your partner for your time at Beacon. They will be your partner until you graduate, drop out, or die. We will not entertain any requests to alter partners. So, adapt.”

He gestured at the forest before continuing “Below us is the Emerald forest, for your initiation each pair is required to venture into the ruins within it, claim a jade relic and return to the cliff. There will be opposition along the way, and you will have to fight for your survival. We are monitoring you, but our instructors will not be in a position to intervene. Remember that huntsmen and huntresses are not simple exterminators of Grimm but protectors of the people, today you will only be protected by your peers.“

A slight tone of excitement could be heard in his voice as he concluded with “Prepare yourselves.”

Slowly the professor studied each student individually, some were focused on the forest, others meet his eyes, and just as his gaze moved to the next student the previous one was launched into the air.

Lavender launched into the air the second Headmaster Alban passed by. The speech was inspiring, and the threats worrying, but it was drowned out by the sound of her heartbeat.

Thump thump thump. She couldn't tell if the loudness was all in her head, but nobody seemed to pay any mind. Maybe it was the collective sound of all their heartbeats, sounding in unison to the challenge ahead.

Brandishing her shield, Lavender unleashed a torrent of steam from behind her, propelling her forwards passed most of the trees and towards a clearing. A perfect spot just outside the wall of trees. She braced herself and shot more steam under her, using her semblance to thicken the cloud and soften her fall. A violet hue shone across the cloud and the steam condensed, thickening into a coalescence of vapor and aura before Lavender landed into it riding her shield. It was more a crash than a slide. She tumbled out of the cloud before regaining her footing and skid away from the cloud, waiting a few seconds to release her semblance. Steam exploded behind her and she could feel the heat while using the force to slide even further away.

"Another happy landing." She said, hopping off her shield into a run and brandishing her spear. "Now where are the Jade relics?"

Yasha watched as the previous student launched into the air. and seeing where this was all going, he prepped his semblance and crouched into a stance ready for launch.  As he did so, his shadow subtly seemed to disappear as a faint shade crept up his body and into his scythe.  If an onlooker was careful, he or she might even say that the scythe emitted a peculiar but barely perceptible hazy glow.

Within a moment, Yasha was launched high into the air by the catapult.  Squinting his eyes against the air resistance as he sailed over the forest, he tried to get a scanning look at the ground below.  He could see a clearing and what looked like some ruined buildings out in the distance, but that seemed a little far off.  He wasn't sure if that was their objective, but with no other noteworthy features in this vast expanse of trees, those ruins seemed as good a place as any for some relics.

Yasha outstretched himself and brought his scythe over his head and hurled it into the forest below with as much force as he could muster, aimed as close to the ruins as was possible, which admittedly still probably not very close given their distance.  Yasha focused on his semblance, using it to feel out his weapon as it spun like a pinwheel into the trees.  Before long, the scythe embedded its blade into a thick tree trunk, which was great, because he was already starting to fall and needed to land quickly.

As soon as Yasha sensed that the weapon had stuck itself in a tree, Yasha activated his semblance.  The same shade that entered his scythe at launch left it, creeping quickly along its handle.  Within the blink of an eye, a shadowy construct in the shape of a large, muscular person appeared, grasping the scythe by the handle.  Another blink of an eye later, Yasha was on the ground next to the construct, and it merged back into his shadow, disappearing.  Yasha pulled his weapon out of the tree, thinking to himself "Piece of cake" with a small grin.  Looking around to orient himself, he then took off in a light jog in the direction of the ruins he saw earlier.

Exhale. The sound of a launch pad, then another, another. Her heartbeat in her ears. Indigo wrapped her tail around her waist and bent her knees, purple eyes aimed squarely ahead.

You have one chance... Don't screw it up.

Her turn came and the cliff was suddenly a hundred-odd feet behind her with a distinct mechanical crack. Indigo squinted into the wind, grasping at what she could see for leads- mostly she found trees. Besides the distant glints of other students sailing through the air around her nothing stood out as important, so Indigo decided to land in no particular spot. As her speed and altitude began to drop she straightened out, aiming down to pick up speed towards the canopy. She focused and imagined being somewhere else, her aura kicked on and the world in front of her melted into a new scene- upwards. Her speed remained the same but she felt gravity instantly change direction. Where Indigo had been an instant before, rocketing towards the ground, she now sailed back up through the treeline. For style, she did a flip.

Indigo did the same twice more, each time her arc above the canopy growing slower and smaller until she gently landed on the forest floor below with a graceful roll. She scanned the area around her, brushing dust off her clothes, before drawing her axe, cracking her neck, and breaking into a sprint in the direction away from the cliff.

Standing on the cliffside and looking down it seemed quite clear that landing strategies would be tested today. In preparation, she pulled back the bolt of the heavy barrel of her rifle and chambered a large gravity dust crystal. She had done a fair amount of reading about Beacon before deciding to try becoming a huntress again after her rough start at Atlas, so when the tall figure of headmaster Inverno approached she recognized him immediately. While listening to his speech she pulled the bolt of her rifle back, just to double-check that the right crystal was loaded.

She was a bit surprised that Beacon seemed to be setting up pairs of two rather than teams of four as they did at Atlas. She looked around at the other students, it was the first time she had really considered any of them as she had been far too nervous to force herself into any real social interaction today. She pulled the bolt of her rifle back, just to dou.. triple-check.

She was jolted back to her senses as the first student was launched into the air, and as the headmaster approached she tried to meet his gaze but chickened out after a fraction of a second. As she was launched through the air she tried to keep track of where the other students were landing, as she really wanted to find someone to pair with quickly. However it was too difficult to track and she needed to prepare for her landing, her hand went towards the bolt again, but this time she stopped herself.

Whilst the lower barrel of her rifle could impart some momentum it was nothing compared to the top one, and she only had one shot there so she tried to stay calm and waited. Just as she was starting to approach the tree canopy she aimed in the direction she was falling and fired. The intention was to kill any horizontal and most of her vertical momentum but she was slightly off vector. Without enough time to think clearly, she let the rifle section of her weapon spin to the opposite side of the blade and shot with the lower barrel, imparting enough momentum to dig the blade into the trunk of a tree. She let out a frustrated sigh while looking down the tall tree she had to descend, but at least she had more or less landed.

Other student hopefuls started falling out of the sky like raining steel and bodies. Many landed into the forest, and Lavender being in a clearing, could only recall the direction of the ruins she spotted. It was a good start because who in their right mind would leave relics in trees? Lavender paused and remembered where she was enrolling. They'd definitely do something like leaving relics in trees.

The clearing ended in more forest, and trees scattered across her vision. There would be no shield skiing here without a chainsaw and a whole lot of time. Occasional sounds of people shouting in the distance echoed back to her and the occasional gunshots meant that people landed more or less in the same area.

After running for a few seconds, Lavender heard the rapid whiz of a weapon to her flank. It was close, but not close enough to see trough the trees. Following the direction of the sound she found the remnants of the tree where it embedded, and footprints running in the same direction. With a quick sprint, she soon caught sight of a scythe wielder running ahead.

"Hey!" She called, waving her spear arm in the air "Want to team up?"

Yasha stopped and turned as he heard someone call out to him.  Looking over the girl that had called to him, he remembered the Headmaster's words - that whoever they first made eye contact with would be their partner.  "Well...now that you called out to me and responded, looks like there's no alternative except teaming up."  Hefting his scythe over his shoulder, he introduced himself,. "The name's Yasha.  Nice to meet ya."

"Likewise." Lavender said, she'd shake his hand but her hands were full with her shield and spear. "Guess that makes us partners."

The boy had a scythe, a difficult and frankly not-so-practical weapon. Usually. The fact he got here as a scythe user meant that he definitely had more than meets the eye. Giving a nod,  Lavender started continued onwards. They needed to find the relics soon, not everyone passed initiation after all.

"To the ruins? I'll race you there." She didn't wait for an answer and started running.

She must have landed in a fairly quiet spot- Or at least, quiet as long as she and anyone else nearby stayed quiet. The pits under her eyes took in the invisible outlines of everything she looked at, small differences in heat between tree and dirt and empty air were fine, but not what she was particularly interested in. She could see that; it was background noise.

Indigo huffed quietly and scratched the back of her head- her tail unfurled and dropped to the ground with a muted thud. Am I lost? I feel lost she thought as she began to scale up the tallest looking tree around to get her bearings. Damn woods look the same.. Oh hey, nice. Pleased to find the ruins in the distance, but more pleased to find herself still actually going in the correct direction, Indigo gave herself a brief moment to feel good about herself before climbing back down. As she did, Indigo pondered absently about what she was meant to retrieve; Just grabbing some old relics sounded a bit too easy for something so important, she couldn't help but feel there was a catch somewhere. Maybe she was overthi- Heat. Something below.

Eyes narrowed, focus. Leg muscles tightened, anticipating. Inhale. Calm.

A blob of heat, smaller than her... Person shaped. Just one?

Just one... Indigo exhaled smoothly and felt the adrenaline sap from her system. She pondered stalking and assessing them, but a moment later decided that it'd be better to just grab a partner and work from there. She didn't remember if there were an odd number of prospective students, but she really didn't like the idea of being left without a buddy if that were the case. Fine, time to go meet her new partner. Indigo put about a second of consideration into how to break the ice before simply doing. Her aura kicked on.

In front of the other student, one instant there was thin air, the next there was Indigo. Purple eyes met purple eyes. "Hey partner," she said with a satisfied little grin. "Call me Indigo."

She allowed herself a few seconds to catch her breath while hanging from her treetop vantage point. After a few failed attempts to look through the trees to see if there were any grimm or students nearby, she started to climb and drop her way down the tree trunk.

Once her feat finally made contact with solid ground she once again scoured the immediate area. As some of the adrenaline from the fall started to leave her system she started to calm down, still very nervous but not falling to your death nervous. Confident that there were no grimm about to jump her she pulled the bolt of her rifle back and loaded an ice crystal before starting to make her way into the woods.

Desperately hoping to find someone to partner up with quickly she focused on listening for sounds of combat, but there was only the occasional sound from off in the distance and from multiple directions. Her internal discussion of how to proceed was suddenly cut short as a figure seemed to pop into existence in front of her. Instinctually she dropped to one knee and raised her weapon towards the apparition, but quickly lowered it once she realized that this was another student. "That.. was quite the.. introduction" she raised herself but even standing her head barely met the others should height "I'm Diana, and yeah I guess we are partners now".

Yasha took off into a run after his apparent new teammate.  "So what's your name, partner?"  While they ran, Yasha kept an eye out on his surroundings.  The forest seemed quite empty, and besides his new partner and the other falling students, there was no movement at all that he could see.  Still, it wouldn't be much of a test if all their journey to the ruins was going to be unchallenged.

"Lavender," She said, giving a confident smile. She kept running and didn't slow her pace. "Lavender du Lac. Where you from, Yasha?"

Despite the falling students Lavender had yet to see any Grimm. Was it because they were too excited? The monsters thrived on negative emotions after all and it wouldn't be that farfetched to think maybe they got attracted to a struggling student. She shivered at the thought, but with this many people around there wouldn't be much worry, especially since the majority of them probably came from pre-huntsman academies.

Lavender picked up the pace. The ruins weren't that far off now, but there were still plenty of places for obstacles to show up. Debris and natural outcrops make for perfect ambush spots, and the cliffsides could conveniently block their view of fliers. She gripped her spear shaft tighter, wondering if shifting it to a sword would fit better with all the clutter around. Trees and boulders alike.
