Title: Birds of a Feather [CLOSED]
Post by: MonsterManic on June 23, 2018, 03:46:52 PM
It just wasn't the same.

Even going so far as to clear a large circle of land within the Emerald Forest with his own hands, sending the trees he chopped down to a lumberjack to craft into benches for students to sit on simply didn't replace the true feeling of proper fighting. Yet here he stood, watching two students go at each other as their Aura depleted bit by bit. It wasn't that they weren't skilled--quite the contrary--rather being compelled as a teacher to hold PvP sessions simply did not sit well with him.

As one student beat the other to a pulp before the electronic board he had brought with him started beeping to confirm Aura depletion, the professor sighed and tapped his scroll to roll the next duo of fighters. A similar sequence of events also appeared on the screen, mimicking a roulette with the student's mugshots rolling by, until...

"Would students Prism Skylark and Rook Ryder take the stage and continue the day's entertainment." There's a noticeable hint of sarcasm and snark to the Hunter's voice, as if somewhat bored by the proceedings.

Even if Professor Ferus was absolutely bored out of his mind, Prism always enjoyed these classes. Outdoors underneath the wide-open sky was home to the hummingbird, having spent such a vast portion of her lifetime outdoors - more familiar with the sky and the wind than most people ever would be, an outdoor arena like this one was well-suited in her favor. Hearing the professor call her name wasn't such a shock, she'd been watching from the sidelines for awhile now. Standing up, she only wobbles momentarily in heels on the grass, before catching herself. Drawing Hawk's Eye from her waist as she walks into the center of the circle, she flicks a hidden lever on the side of the steel box, transforming it into it's primary form - and drawing a clip of ammo from her waist, presses it into place with a satisfying click.

Backup magazines? Check. Dust-tipped bullet ammo belt? Check. Dust cylinders? Check.

Reaching the center, she turns around to face her opponent, putting out her hand for her opponent to shake before preparing to move back to their respective ready positions."Let's make this a good fight, yeah?"

Rook was... distracted to say the least. Between his new team, being the leader of said new team, and being at Beacon altogether, there was a lot on his mind. Needless to say, while others watched the fights in front of them, he was in his own little world. Medici Librae rested on his arms, growing hot as the black metal absorbed the sunlight. When the professor called his name, it took Rook a moment to process what was going on.

‘Oh, right, that’s me.’ He thought to himself, getting up from the benches to join his opponent in the arena.

As he walked towards the center of the arena, his eyes scanned the surroundings. There was a lot of space to move, and that wasn’t necessarily a good thing. A quick glance at his opponent showed wings and a rifle, possibly the worst combination against his fighting style. This might not last very long.

“Yes, of course.” Rook replied, taking her hand and shaking it. He smiled, before turning around and getting into his starting position. He took a stance, extending the shields of Medici Librae, and prepared himself for battle.

As both students took the circular stage, the professor felt compelled to pay more attention than he did with his last match to the next one. He was, admittedly, interested to see how the young Faunus had improved since that time under his observance during her team's initiation. It seemed the spectators shared his opinion, based on the increased level of chatter coming from the stands.

That wasn't to say he was biased toward one side--he wasn't allowed to hold any biases anyway. Even so, gazing first at the other fighter and then his school profile, it really did not look good for the young brawler. Unless those gauntlets of his held more than a shield, Ferus feared this fight might be a little one-sided.

The leader of Team CASA versus the leader of Team CNRS. Ferus mused. A shame he did not have the chance to see the latter in action beforehand. "Same rules as before; whatever it takes to drop the opponent's Aura down to 20%. Any additional attacks after the buzzer has sounded will result in disqualification, no matter if the attack connected or not."

He raised his hand and flung it down as the buzzer sounded to signal the start of the match. "Try not to kill each other."

Shields. Shields are annoying. They make landing shots that do actual damage particularly difficult. He has to be a brawler, you don't see anything else - if he wants to do damage, he'll need to get in close. Keep your distance, move quickly.

Prism's wings open with a snap, and with a harsh downwards push coinciding with a strong gust of wind, throwing Prism towards Rook's left while maintaining a distance of nearly a dozen meters. She can hopefully stay just ahead of him, and it'll be tested by the three shots she fires off in quick succession: two towards the body, but the last one by jerking her gun up at the last second for a headshot.

Rook listened intently as the professor listed off the rules for the fight, positioning his shields so that they covered as much of his body as possible. He didn't have any other options but to get in close, though he doubted she'd make that easy for him.

Sure enough, as soon as the match started, she was off. Her wings blurred, moving too fast for the eye to see. It was almost hypnotic, which became a problem when she raised her rifle to fire, coming in around his left side. He didn't have time to wait for the sound of gunshots, so instead he raised his left arm, ducking his head behind it. The first shot came in low, hitting his abdomen, but the second and third hit the shield harmlessly. Glancing down, he checked his aura readout.

"93%... Gotta make her get in close." He said, mostly to himself. Rook peered out from behind his shield, readying himself to absorb more gunfire. The only chance he had at winning this was to make her come to him.

"Good defense!" Prism yells, offering her opponent a lopsided smile. Still, this doesn't halt her rapid movements - she keeps moving fast, firing off one more shot - before another idea crosses her mind, and you can see it dawn in her eyes. It's a risky move, but she needs the practice using that in actual combat.

Speeding up once again with another especially-harsh downward sweep of her wings, there's the sound of a weapon transforming - within the space of the dash, Prism's rifle has been replaced by a large glaive that she carries with the same confidence. She spins it once, twice to gain momentum- before suddenly turning to face Rook as she momentarily slowed, bringing the blade up into the air in a sweep aimed at nothing in particular, where it shimmered bright white for a second-

And a white crescent slides off the blade, aimed directly at Rook.

From what I've seen used in threads, aura-enhanced attacks like that don't usually consume the actual aura, but if either of you think differently, I can just edit the drop into Prism's aura.

"Thanks!" Rook smiled, his face mostly hidden behind the shield. Before he had a chance to give some kind of witty remark, another shot hit the shield, the black metal absorbing the impact. She moved fast. That was an issue.

And then she changed tactics, taking Rook off guard. He separated his shields slightly, trying to get a better view of her as she rushed towards him. He saw her weapon change form, the weight of the rifle shifting downwards into a long blade. As she spun it around, Rook smiled to himself. He kept one shield up, trying to ready himself for something unexpected, but shifted his other gauntlet so that his hand would have better maneuverability.

'She knows I'll just keep blocking shots, and that she needs to get in close. She'll take the opening to hit me with the blade, and I'll grab her weapon before it can hit me. Once I have it, she won't be able to-' Rook thought to himself, planning his course of action, but it was brought to a sudden halt when a large white crescent started moving towards him. His eyes widened, the attack coming seemingly out of nowhere. Instead of using the opening in his defense for a melee attack, the crescent of energy struck Rook with full force.

Rook was blown to the ground, tumbling in a motion he had practiced many times. Within less than a moment, he was low to the ground, both shields in front of him. A quick glance to his aura readout let him know that the attack wasn't going to end the fight any time soon, but he still needed to be more careful.

He's playing the defensive again, holding still and buckling down against her attacks. Those shields are effective at doing their job, but they can't block everything - and Prism's determined to prove that. He'll need to move against her eventually.

Keeping her wings extended in case she needed to bolt from a sudden lunge, Prism rotates on one foot, the staff of her blade perpendicular to body. A shot fires off, coming from the end of the staff, and she uses the recoil to complete the spin, bringing the blade around to launch off another blindingly-white crescent, horizontal to Rook this time. This technique is repeated three times, Prism practically spinning like a ballerina with each rotation, balanced by her wings - sending a barrage of bullets and aura-enhanced attacks at Rook in an attempt to overwhelm his defense.

Rook kneeled close to the ground, minimizing the area his body took up so that his shields could protect him as much as possible. He was reminded of an old paradox: What happens when an unstoppable force meets and immovable object? Now, she was far from unstoppable, and he was far from immovable, but the point remained. He didn't have much in terms of offensive capability against her, but she hadn't shown many defensive capabilities herself. If he could get close enough to land some hits in, it could turn the tide of the fight.

Rook waited for the impact of the first bullet, holding steady as the blast of energy quickly followed. After that, he stood up, still holding his shields in front of him. It wasn't a perfect defense, but helped significantly. The second bullet hit his shield, and he started taking steps forward, slowly but surely moving towards her. The fact that he was standing up made him more vulnerable, and the second energy blast was only partially absorbed by the shields, the lower half of the crescent hitting his abdomen. It hurt, but Rook kept moving.

The third bullet almost it past his shields, barely being diverted by the edge of his gauntlet, but Rook knew that his only chance was advancing while she was distracted by her attacks. The spinning certainly helped her fire off attacks with efficiency, but it couldn't have done her any favors when it came to keeping track of him.

Rook decided to take a calculated risk, and opened up his defense for the third energy wave, taking the blow so that he could get a shot at her. He pushed himself forward, off the ground, taking the crescent of energy directly against his chest. Despite taking damage, he reached out, trying to grab her. Whether it was a limb, her weapon, or anything else, once he had a grip, he had a chance.

She's out of bullets.

As Prism finishes the final spin, she needs to reach up to eject the magazine from inside the blade of the weapon, hand flying to her ammo belt to pull off another one. The fact that Rook took the final hit, when Prism was counting on him on defending himself, gives him the opening he needs. Prism still managed to react quickly with a strong gust of wind, pulling her up into the air as it catches her wings and they begin to flap to become an iridescent blur - but her reaction is slow, and if he reacts quickly enough, he'd be able to grab her ankle before she gets out of range.

...though he may need to deal with a sniper rifle at point-blank range soon, based on the sound of Prism's weapon transforming.

Rook's eyes moved fast, trying to reach anything he could. He dove, hand extended, and watched as she reached down to her belt to reload. With his current aura level, he still had a chance to win this thing. He had been trying to keep track of her, figuring out what direction she could dodge in, but he didn't expect her to go straight up into the air. The wind felt cool against his face, and her weapon quickly lifted out of reach.

Time seemed to slow to a crawl as Rook's mind raced. Her body moved up, and all of a sudden her feet were in reach. Rook reached out, and wrapped his hand around her ankle, pulling down with all the strength he could muster. He landed on his knees, and quickly touched his free hand to the ground. His aura became visible, the dark blue energy seeming to solidify as Rook activated his semblance. With his grip on her ankle now locked in place, there would be no way for her to fly away. Unfortunately, that also meant there was no way for him to dodge whatever she did next.

Prism hates being small sometimes. It means you get tossed around, easily picked up - in the worst cases, even tossed around by her own semblance, when she isn't able to control it. That's exactly what lets Rook manage to drag her back to earth, planting himself on the ground with his hand gripping around her ankle. She yanks her leg, her wings strain and another harsh updraft kicks in to try to carry her upwards, but nothing happens - with that blue aura around him, she's literally locked in place.

...Fuck, so that's his semblance. "...jesus, you're practically my direct counter."

She needs to get free.

Thankfully, Hawk's Eye has been reloaded by now, and it's very hard to miss two point-blank headshots.

Rook couldn't speak, his aura holding even his lips in place, but internally he smiles at her comment. He wasn't certain exactly what her semblance was, but now he knew for sure that it was to do with mobility. So long as he didn't let her out of his arm's reach, he stood a chance, and there wouldn't be any nasty surprises from her innate ability.

Despite finally getting a grip, he knew that there was a very high chance that some high damage was coming his way. The only way to stop her from using it to make him let go was to take them with his lock still in place, and that meant taking them at their full force.

*BOOM*

The first shot hit him in the head, and despite not moving from the impact, he could certainly feel it. There was barely enough time to think before-

*BOOM*

The second shot hit in the same place. His ears were ringing, and he knew he couldn't stay in that position forever. His aura would fail long before she ran out of ammunition.

After giving a brief moment of thought to plan his actions, he suddenly released his lock, the solid aura field shattering. He tightened his grip on her ankle and pulled down, hard. If all went to plan, he would take her off guard, and she would hit the ground, giving him the opportunity to finally land some hits of his own.

The fact that two point-blank headshots didn't make him let go vaguely impressed Prism somewhere in the back of her mind. Unfortunately for her those are the only thoughts she'll have time for - right as Rook pulls her down to earth, slamming her directly against the ground. She audibly wheezes as the breath is knocked out of her and she takes damage for the first time the entire round. Spending a stunned moment staring at the sky before she snaps back into action.

Her clip's empty, but she's still got her weapon. Hawk's Eye transforms for it's second time that match as she folds her wings under her, using them to push up into a sitting position while her hands are free - driving the shimmering-white blade of the glaive down across Rook's neck in a chance to get him to spring back to avoid it.

Rook's aura was low, and getting lower. He didn't even need to look at his readout to know that he couldn't take much more. Thankfully, she hit the ground with a satisfying thud. Rook allowed himself a moment to grin, landing his first hit. Some might chastise him for it, considering what he had to give up, but the fact that he was able to land a hit at all against this kind of opponent was pretty impressive.

'Now all I have to do is make sure that it isn't the only hit I land.' He reached his arm back, the shield extending so that it'd do as much damage as possible. All of a sudden, he saw her sitting up again, her weapon extending and pointed towards him. Rook knew he had a choice to make, but really, there wasn't much choice at all. He tilted his head to the side, taking the blow and making sure he got his hits in. He aimed the first punch for her head. It would be brutal, but probably the only chance he had at winning this thing.

Hoping the punch would rattle her, he aimed the second strike for her side, trying to get as much in before she got away again.

At almost double the aura levels Miss Skylark clearly held both the upper hand and the upper ground. Her combat experience had improved notably - at least from what this 'old fogie' could witness with his own eyes - something which he attributed to her constantly being up and about at night. Yes, the school was aware of both her lack of sleep and what she did with that time - Beacon's campus was home to co-ed dorms, and children were still children. Drawing multiple late-night shifts to oversee the security system had given Ferus ample evidence of how he was busted in his old school days.

However, the tenacity of Mr Ryder was admirable, if unfortunately little more. At the cost of half his aura and a clever application of his Semblance he'd managed to pull the airborne fighter down to earth where he could fight on his own terms. It was what came next that truly piqued Ferus's interest; with a severe disadvantage Mr Ryder would have to pull every trick in the book to get even, nor was Miss Skylark any slouch in the melee department.

Finally leaning forward for the first time in any match, the professor studied the ongoing match with a renewed vigour.

Prism's not in much of a place to block. Unfortunately for her, the first punch hits, as does the following one to her ribs - but other than the breath being knocked out of her (again), Prism shows no sign of simply laying back and taking it. If Rook wants to keep on top of her, he's going to need to try much harder.

While Rook pounds away, it isn't hard to transform Hawk's Eye back to it's small storage form, instead of an unwieldy six-foot long pole. As Rook pulls back from the punch to her ribs, Prism goes to shove the small box between the two of them, planting it between her legs, before flicking the switch alongside it that would transform it back into it's glaive mode. The butt of the glaive would be pointed into the ground, between Prism's leg, but the pole would extend so the blade was thrust up directly into Rook's stomach as it transformed - held steady by Prism, it should force the two apart, unless Rook had a way to phase through her weapon.

If there was anything Rook needed to avoid, it was getting cocky. He may have landed in a few strikes, but he was still on the losing end of the fight, and he needed to turn it around. His mind raced at a million miles an hour, trying to think of a way to keep her from getting free, but it appeared that she found a way out before he got the chance. Her hands moved like a blur, and all of a sudden her glaive was rushing towards his abdomen.

Almost out of nowhere, in the split second it took for the pole to extend towards him, it clicked. He stood over her and slammed his foot down aiming at her own ankle, her legs still extended on the floor. Planting his foot in place, he grabbed the glaive as it extended, not just allowing it to hit him at full force, but actually pulling it towards his body. It may have made the hit hurt him worse, but it was a worthy sacrifice if his idea worked.

With her hands steadying the weapon at the bottom of the pole, he leaned back with all of his body weight, his hands gripped at tightly as he could on her weapon. He hoped that between his foot trying to hold her down, and the likely strength difference between the two of them, he'd be able to wrest her own weapon away from her. That would mean no more ranged attacks, and no choice but to get close to him to try and get it back.

Prism's eyes briefly widen as he suddenly takes the weapon and yanks it away, powering through the flinch as he stamps on her ankle. It only takes her a moment to realize he's trying to take her weapon, before her eyes narrow again and she sets her jaw - Rook is not getting his hands on her weapon.

Instead of passively letting him yank it, Prism shifts her one free foot so it's underneath her, pushing upwards off the ground with her hands still gripping the bottom portion of her glaive's staff. She pushes into his pull, attempting to use his own momentum against him. There's a beat or two of quiet as the wind in the area stills, before an absolutely massive gust of wind whips through the area as well, ripping leaves off the trees and sending anything not tied-down dancing - all channeled directly onto Rook, aiming to make him lose his balance and fall over backwards.

For a split second, her weapon was moving fast, and Rook thought his plan might have succeeded. Unfortunately, the feeling dissipated as quickly as it had appeared, and he saw her grip tight on the shaft, her knuckles turning white and her jaw set. She was definitely determined, he had to give her that. He jolted the blade to the side, keeping it in his grip as she pushed it forward, but causing it to harmlessly pass close by his torso.

Still, not all was lost. Even with her hands still on the glaive, Rook had a lot of influence on how she could use it, and she was still at close quarters. However, Rook's thoughts were interrupted by the feeling of a cool breeze against his face, rapidly followed by a howling wind that he could feel moving his entire body. 'I figured out that her semblance had something to do with wind, but this? This is-' He thought before interrupting himself. He didn't have time for tangents.

He stood firm against the wind for a moment, his eyes squeezed shut, but couldn't keep it up for very long, especially with one of his feet trying to pin down her body. Rook fell to the ground, entirely focused on keeping her weapon in his grasp. His back hit the ground with a dull thud, knocking the wind out of him, but he held his grip nonetheless. Suddenly, his eyes shot open, glancing at his opponent, now standing over him. Rook moved as quickly as he could, letting go of the glaive with one had and using it to touch the ground, causing his aura to once again solidify around him, locking him into place.

Hopefully, what she didn't know would end up hurting her. She knew he couldn't be moved while his semblance was active, and so there was no chance of wrestling her weapon from his hand, still tightly closed around the shaft. What she didn't know was that he could only keep himself locked for a fairly limited amount of time. Rook just had to hope that he could hold it long enough to accomplish what he was trying to do.

Rook still has his hands on Hawk’s Eye, which is frankly unacceptable. He takes one hand off her weapon, which is a bit of a relief - but her brow furrows further as he touches the ground, and his aura is suddenly visible as a dark-blue shell. She’s still attempting to yank her weapon out of his grasp, but he’s basically locked himself into place - and her eyes narrow as she’s reminded of another familiar semblance, once that renders the user immobile. Apparently there’s more than one person with that type of semblance.

She’s not going to get a better opportunity than this.

So instead of fruitlessly yanking on her glaive, Prism pivots on one foot, and attempts to drive her four-inch wedge heels directly into his groin.
