Title: Physician, Teach Thyself (OPEN to FIRST YEARS)
Post by: Riven on November 25, 2017, 05:35:44 PM
(OOC: Just so everyone knows, there's no posting order for this thread -- feel free to pop in or bow out as you see fit.)

Beacon Academy... how many years had it been since he'd walked these hallowed halls? Memories seemed to wash over him with every step, every sound. To think, once a transfer student from a foreign land, that he would now serve here as teacher to many of Remnant's most promising. It was enough to bring a soft smile to his wrinkled old face.

First day. First day teaching. This would doubtless prove to be quite an experience. Walking stick in one hand and lecture notes in the other, Budonoki looked every bit the far-eastern sage turned professional educator in his earth-tone slacks and wooden sandals, forest green shirt, black tie with subtle leaf emboss, and rice hat. Some might even think his appearance comical, and truth be told he wasn't quite sold on the color scheme himself. One had to make due, however; much of his wardrobe was still being shipped over from Mistral, and he wasn't quite sure if a combat gi was proper classroom attire. The students had to stick to a dress code, after all, so he would respect them with efforts towards the same.

Reaching the classroom, he stepped inside to find the risers were nearly full with students chattering away. Ah, how it brought back memories. Quietly sliding the door shut behind him -- and taking a moment to place his staff upright in a large dirt-filled planter near the door -- Budonoki made his way to the lectern and cleared his throat.

"Hello." Waiting a moment for the chatter to subside, he let his eyes and smile travel from face to face, sweeping the room. "Welcome students, to Practical Medicine and First Aid 101. I am Doctor Sophos, your instructor for this course. The goal of this course is to equip you future Huntresses and Huntsmen with the knowledge and skills needed to tend to both ordinary and combat-related wounds, injuries, and ailments when your Aura fails, or in the event of another person needing your care."

Removing his hat and hanging it on the corner of the desk, he looked around with an amicable, welcoming expression. "Now, I am new on the school's staff, but once I was a student here much like yourselves. Does anyone have any questions, about the subject at hand or myself, before we get started?"

Not exactly contrasting with her extremely properly worn uniform, Helena's eyes were shining. Well, not quite literally, but it was that sort of light that doesn't really exist yet is somehow perceived by most people. After all, this was one of the main reasons, if not the main reason, why she'd decided to go down the Huntress path instead of the physician one. Her notebook was open on the first page, three pens - one black, one red, one blu - standing at the ready at tis right. She almost couldn't wait for this. Sophea was very nice and held the occasional formation once in a while, but they weren't exactly regular. This may very well be the source of knowledge she'd been looking for, amidst the myriad of books and occasional visit to the hospital.

While musing on her future classes, something few of her comrades seemed to be doing at the moment, she noticed that what was most likely the professor had walked in, unsurprisingly unnoticed by the majority of his future audience. She eagerly took hold of the pitch-colored ballpoint, ready to note anything. She frowned a bit, though, when the man appeared to plant his staff near the door. Was that some sort of plant?

After the class quoted down, the professor greeted them and did a sort presentation of himself and the course. Her first action was to note down the name - Dr. Sophos. Good, now she knew how to refer to him. She always had trouble with that, not knowing what to choose between the dozen or so options that usually presented themselves.

Her second action was to raise her hand straight at the roof at the adult's inquiry, as if she attempted to stab a hole into the ceiling with her pen by sheer willpower. I have a question!, she thought.

Seeing an eager hand shoot up near the front of the class, the elderly teacher smiled and nodded to Helena. "Yes, young lady? Go ahead."

Seated in the back row of the class so as to not attract attention, Rackley was content with reading a book while he waited amidst the loud chatter from the other first years in the class. He wasn't the biggest fan of taking this class, but it was one of many classes that he was more or less required to take if he was to progress in Beacon. Regardless, he had to concede to the fact that this type of class would be knowledgeable on missions should things go awry and either himself or one of his teammates got injured.

His thoughts were immediately interrupted by the quieting down of the class and the announcement of the man standing before the entire class. At first impressions, Rackley couldn't help but wonder where the professor was from. His clothing gave off the impression that he was not from Vale, but Rackley simply couldn't figure out where. Maybe he's from Vacuo or Mistral? he wondered as he absentmindedly listened to the professor talk. Guess I'd better get ready to take notes he thought as he placed his bookmark in the book and pulled out his notebook. As he opened up to start taking notes, he looked up towards the direction of one of his fellow classmates who had raised her hand as if trying to rip a hole in the air above her. Not paying her too much attention, he went back to his notes and began to write down in preparation of the class.

Her smile surging forth on its own, Helena lowered her hand and asked, in her usual bright & cheerful tone, "What is the extent of the injuries and illnesses we'll be covering in this class?"

Budonoki nodded thoughtfully. "A very good question. I'll try to keep my response brief."

"Most of you already know some amount of basic first aid, even if you don't realize it. I doubt there's anyone here who doesn't know how to wrap a wound with gauze, or knows that any sort of bleeding injury ought to be disinfected. Those of you who grew up outside the kingdoms likely learned far more as a simple matter of survival. So, our focus will be chiefly on the practicals -- how to quickly and accurately analyse a patient's situation and determine the proper steps to take from there. Since Beacon's mission is to train Huntsmen and Huntresses a good deal of our effort will be spent on combat injuries, but not all. A Huntress or Huntsman afield ought to know, for example, if the sickly people in the village they pass through are contagious or simply had some bad stew -- if the wounded man in the road has indeed been attacked, or is simply play-acting while bandits move to surround you. There are many practicalities."

Looking around the room, he added. "I know that, for some of you, this may seem silly. You're here to fight monsters, after all... but have a care: the creatures of Grimm are drawn to suffering. If, by means of a little knowledge, you can help alleviate even small sufferings in this world, then you have saved lives by throwing the dark predators off the scent."

Diana had arrived early for the class and had taken a seat that was in the front row but to the side so that she was still out of the way. She had placed a stack of three notebooks on the desk, one of which she was skimming through now, containing her own notes from the semester she trained to be a paramedic. Although she wasn't expecting to have any new material covered she was incredibly excited to have a class that was about helping others without, a class that wouldn't just end up being about fighting.

As Doctor Sophos entered the room, Diana put down the notebook she had been reading and opened one of the others. She found an empty page and titled it Doctor Sophos before starting a quick sketch of the professor. His closing statement to Helena about how treating injuries could save lives by preventing more Grimm attacks struck a cord with Diana, she quickly opened the final notebook which was entirely empty and wrote down the quote.

She raised a slightly meek hand, waiting for a response from the professor before speaking "Excuse me doctor Sophos. You said you had been a student here, but you're also a doctor? I was just wondering how that came about?"

Quickly taking note of what Dr. Sophos said, Rackley did his best to keep up with the questions. Alleviating even small sufferings in this world, you have saved lives by throwing predators off the scent... he quickly finished writing as another girl in the class also asked a question, one more personal than the last. Well...perhaps it's part of why he wanted to be a huntsman? he thought, scratching the back of his head before adjusting his braid slightly. Finishing with that, he continued to quietly take notes of the class, trying his best to not draw attention to himself.

Sandy had been sitting next to his teammate with his typical barely permissible style of wearing his uniform and his feet on the desk and leaning back on the two rear legs of his chair as he waited for the class to begin. As the teacher entered he retracted his legs and adjusted to a more normal sitting position with a small thud sounding out as his chair legs impacted the ground. As talk with the teacher began Sandy followed Rackley's lead and opened his notebook and pulled out a pen leaning over slightly to peek at his notes and copy them.

"Excuse me doctor Sophos. You said you had been a student here, but you're also a doctor? I was just wondering how that came about?"

Budonoki nodded understandingly -- it was, admittedly, a rather extreme life transition to go from a professional monster hunter to a professional surgeon. His life had been one of several similarly winding paths, however: from farm boy to student, from Haven to Beacon, from Huntsman to Faunus freedom fighter, and from secluded meditation mats to sterilized operating tables, to say nothing of the new role he was stepping into today. "The short answer is: medical school." He allowed himself a good-natured chuckle before continuing. "But I understand what you really mean. Life, much like medicine, is both simple and complicated. Who you are will always be the same, yet the person you are can change just as much as the face you see in the mirror. My journey has been a long one, and I have both seen and done much over the years. Along the way I discovered that preserving life was just as important to me as fighting to protect it."

"Now then, one more before we begin today's lesson. Anyone?"

Continuing with his note taking, Rackley saw from the corner of his eyes that Sandy was trying to peek at his notes. Smiling slightly, he moved his notes closer to Sandy so it'll be easier for him to read them.

It was perplexing to be sure as to why Dr Sophos would want to change his profession. I wonder why he's a professor now? he thought, wondering if he should raise his hand and ask or not. Not sure if it would be a good idea or not, he simply remained quiet and looked over at Sandy. "D-does that help?" he asked quietly, stuttering slightly over his words. Despite rooming together and being on the same team, Rackley still found it a bit difficult to be comfortable around his teammates.

As Doctor Sophos started his explanation, Helena dutifully started taking notes - not everything word for word, though. Only the important or significant parts, such as the answer to her question as well as the tidbit about easing suffering. She continued doing so when a second question came, this one from not too far on her right.

As the professor announced that this'd be the last question, she resisted the urge to raise her hand once again, wanting to give the chance to someone else to ask a question. She'd already had her turn, after all.

Sophea sat in the very back of the class, the top-right corner from the professor's perspective. Her sight was strong enough to read the board clearly, but she planned on being mostly ears anyway. She sat cross-legged with a pen tapping against her notebook laid atop the desk in front of her. Beside her notebook was her scroll, just in case she was needed for an emergency.

As one of Beacon's nurses, Sophea really had no need for the class. Instead, she was taking the opportunity to observe the mindsets of the prospective field medics--Helena and Diana--as well as Dr. Budonoki Sophos himself. Despite being 'just' a professor, Sophea considered him to be her senior in terms of experience and academic rank at least.

Sophea raised her hand. "Yes. Despite being a licensed physician, is there a reason why you are not part of the medical staff here at Beacon?"

Budonoki raised an eyebrow in curiosity at the question, both surprised and impressed. "Well, now. You're quite well informed, miss..." He glanced down at the class roster but failed to find a name or photo that matched. Still, she looked familiar. It took him a moment, and a bit of squinting, to realize she wasn't in a student uniform -- that's when it clicked, his memory jogged back to the school's staff orientation. "Ah, nurse Visorith! I had no idea you'd be joining us today. Delightful!" His smile beamed upwards at his coworker.

"Well, from what I understand, you have done -- and continue to do -- quite an outstanding job." After a brief, thoughtful pause, he added. "I wasn't quite sure that it was... proper... for me to assume a medical staff role; one could see a potential for undue influence, given my ties to the LifeWeave company. Nevertheless, I promise that should you or any of the other nursing staff ever have need of me I shall endeavor to be only a Scroll call away."

"And, with a little luck," He turned and glanced across the attending students' faces again. "What our young Huntsmen and Huntresses will learn here should keep them from needing the attentions of a surgeon, or so I certainly hope."

"All that said, let's begin." Shuffling his papers briefly, Budonoki pulled out a small remote control. With it he dimmed the lights and activated a video projector mounted into the ceiling, causing a loading screen to be projected onto the back of the classroom wall. "As this class will be focusing on practicals, our first exercise will be to examine and discuss a series of probable scenarios you might encounter in the course of missions. None of this will be on any test and your participation won't be graded -- all I ask is that you think."

"Now, fair warning to you all: you are about to see images of real injuries incurred by Huntsmen and Huntresses. It's not pretty, but medical care seldom is. If any of you start to feel queasy or faint, please speak up; I'd like to avoid becoming known as the teacher who caused students to throw up or pass out on his first day."

Using the remote, the doctor brought up a photograph that immediately justified his warning: it was a close-up on someone's lower leg with the shaft of a crossbow bolt sticking out of it. Dry blood coated the skin around and below the injury; it appeared that the bolt had gone in but not through. Giving the students (and attending nurse) a moment to take in the image, he explained.

"Our first scenario is this: while travelling between villages your team was ambushed by bandits. One of your teammates was hit in the leg, like so, by a crossbow bolt before they could get their Aura up. After fighting off your attackers you must see to your teammate's injury. What are your first thoughts? What is your first impulse?"

At Rackley giving him a better view of his notes Sandy gave him a nod, a smile and a quick "Thanks." before putting his head down and racing to copy the notes and catch up with the class.  "All caught up. Thanks again Rackl- huh? What'dya think the nurse is doing on a beginners first aid course? Shouldn't she already know all this?"  As Budonoki continued Sandy failed spectacularly in his attempt to contain his laughter in response to a statement that seemed ridiculous.  "Um sir. How is a student that passes out going to be able to speak up?"

Helena almost flinched when the very easily recognizable nurse's voice asked a question. Well then, that was definitely surprising. She kept her attention focused forwards, though. Only thing she found somewhat worthy of note is the 'ties to the LifeWeave company'. She didn't really know what those ties were or what the company was, but eh, it was good trivia anyway.

Then the class got properly started, lights dimming and projector ever-so-slightly whirring to life. She couldn't help but lean a bit closer to her notebook, preparing to write whatever would happen, if necessary. However, it started with a disclaimer. She'd seen some pretty rough stuff go by in the ER once or twice while helping out, so she paid it little to no mind. The appearance of the admittedly somewhat disturbing image produced no effect on her, either. She was also far too zoned in to notice the laughter coming from the back of the class, as well as the question that followed suit. She did, however, hear and understand the teacher's.

Hmmm. So basically an arrow, huh? Well, first was checking how the victim was doing, right? Heartbeat, breathing, abnormal pains away from the harmed zone, state of consciousness, general lucidity, unusual weakness, the like. If something else's wrong, deal with that first. If, on the contrary, it's as fine and dandy as can be with a crossbow bolt in your leg, take care of it. First in this case, since the bleeding seemed to have stopped, was to check exactly what part of the leg had been hit. Second was to clean the wound and surrounding area as best as possible. Third, make sure to not tamper with the bolt too much, as the bleeding might start again. Removing the arrow bolt would need surgery, since there was no telling what manner of barbs the thing had or how much damage it had caused. The only thing she could somewhat see is cut the shaft so that it doesn't come out of the leg as far, which'd mostly just make it easier to deal with. Wouldn't get in the way as much and all. After all this is said and done, use a crutch, support the victim or put on a stretcher, getting to the closest emergency-capable clinic or hospital ASAP.

After finishing her train of reasoning, Helena focused on Doctor Sophos again, slowly moving her right hand up to answer.

Hearing a familiar voice Diana spun around to look up the stands, they had only met briefly before but the fact that Sophea was here filled her with excitement. She had long wanted to get a familiar with the medical staff of Beacon, and here were the two major players. Snapping back to reality she scribbled "LifeWeave" as something to look into. Although typically one to remain quiet in most classes she desperately wanted to seem knowledgeable to both Sophea and Budonoki, so when the picture came up she raised her hand whilst scribbling some notes to organize her thoughts.

"Um sir. How is a student that passes out going to be able to speak up?"

Raising an eyebrow, the good doctor glanced briefly at the class roster. "Ah, yes -- mister Smoke. Thank you; perhaps that wasn't the best choice of words. Let me clarify: if anyone starts to feel faint or unsteady, they shouldn't wait to say so and may be step out for a minute or simply rest their head on the desk as their need may be. I do hope that addresses your concern." He would let the laughter slide; no point in coming off as harsh or humorless. It was, after all, only day one of the semester.

Waiting a few minutes to let the students organize their thoughts, Budonoki saw two hands go up: Helena Chlophyll and Diana Farran, a pair of very promising young ladies whom the doctor recognized from his short-list of students in the class with a notable medical studies background. It was no surprise they would be the ones quickest and keenest to answer, he supposed. From what he'd read in their student files, it wouldn't surprise him if these two could teach this class.

"Miss Chlophyll, miss Farran, go ahead. Your first impressions, if you please." He gestured between the two of them, indicating they could answer in whichever order they wished.

Having arrived a little bit late, Blair tried to sneak into class. She almost made it to her seat without being noticed, she tripped over a stair and her books fell, making a large ruckus before she stood back up and quickly sat down in her seat. Her cheeks were bright red and she slid down in her seat, trying not to be seen.

Nodding back at Sandy, Rackley continued to take notes, trying hard to be inconspicuous as Sandy drew the attention of both the professor as well as the students there. Just keep your head down and avoid eye contact... he thought, idly drawing a few pictures of medical tools in his notebook so that he could look busy.

Thankfully, the attention seemed to turn away from Sandy as another student tried to sneak into the classroom, but failed in her attempt. Looking up from his drawings as the girl quickly grabbed her material and sat down, Rackley felt a moment of sympathy towards her as he would feel completely embarrassed around everyone else. Moving his eyes away from her so that she wouldn't feel someone's weight on her, he continued his drawings, all the while intrigued to hear more in the class.

Initially a bit surprised to be answering as a duo, Diana gave a glance towards Helena who seemed to signal that Diana should go first. Briefly wondering how to answer fairly she figured that she could cover the analysis, whilst Helena could cover treatment. Hoping that was fair she spoke up.

"Well to answer the main point of your question, you leave the crossbow bolt in the wound. Pulling it out will do more harm than good." She paused for a second unsure if that was all he wanted, however wanting to make a good first impression she pushed onward "We don't have a lot of information but it is enough to speculate a bit on. The blood in the image has dried and there seems to be little bleeding from the wound, this tells us that the fight probably lasted a while and that they may have recovered enough aura to start closing his wound. As such his general condition, his consciousness, breathing, heart rate, are the priority. I would also check the pulse distal to the wound. If the bolt is stuck in the bone it could be sturdy enough to not bleed but still cut off blood supply, if so the puls past the wound would be weak." Her last suggestion was admittedly a bit out there but it did at least demonstrate some knowledge of anatomy.

"Um, Helena do you want to cover treatment?" There was a bit of worry in her voice, as she was unsure if she had talked too much, or if Helena was better at diagnosing than treatment.
Title: Re: Physician, Teach Thyself (OPEN to FIRST YEARS)
Post by: nathan67003 on December 04, 2017, 07:32:40 PM
Helena took an instant to realize that Diana had just talked to her, blinking a few times to get out of listening mode. "Yeah, sure. My pleasure." She collected her thoughts on the matter once again before starting.

"First aid treatment would start by gently cleaning and sanitizing the wound as much as possible, then wrapping the area immediately around the bolt to both protect said wound and immobilize the foreign body to the most of what can be managed. Movement would reopen the wound or possibly inflict further internal damage. If a tool, or weapon, is nearby that can cleanly cut the shaft without disturbing the injury too much, it should be used so as it won't be in the way nearly as much. Simple wooden shafts could potentially be snapped, provided the part attached to the head remains stable enough. Then you either make a crutch, lend a shoulder to the victim or put them on a stretcher before bringing them to the nearest surgery-capable location for removal of the head ASAP."

Whew. Not that she was shy or anything but being the focus point of the entire class sure brought a bit of nervousness along, didn't it. Hopefully she didn't miss anything - the ER of the hospital she helped in never really had to deal with bolt or arrow injuries.

...Wait. It felt like she'd missed something when she was concentrating on her answer... She couldn't remember the surrounding sounds during that time, but she had the sensation that something very noticeable had happened. Damn. At least it wasn't in the center of her field of view, so it probably hadn't been Doctor Sophos.

Sophea nodded, satisfied with both their answers, penned her notebook. [Helena and Diana are both competent in first aid, as to be expected.] She hesitated, tapping the blunt end against her notebook somewhat audibly. She took note of their apparent disregard for their fellow classmate who tripped while walking up the stairs.

She packed up what little belongings she had and stood up, clasping her hands together apologetically toward Dr. Sophos. Sophea walked to where Blair had sat with discreet and took a seat beside her. She opened her notebook to a fresh page. [Are you OK?]

Sandy, Having made his smart-arse remark turned to look at the material   damn. That is a pretty grim looking injury. I think I know what to do but it's a bit late now. Sandy was then distracted from the class by the sound of the door opening and a faunas girl trying to sneak in. "Damn that's never fun."[/b] Then she fell down and spilled her stuff everywhere. Almost immediately Sandy was on his feet and on his way down to help her at the very least collect her spilled belongings.  "Oh crap. Are you alright?"

Just before the two young women could give their answers, a late entry into the class made herself known with a stumble in the darkened classroom. Seeing the student scramble to get their fallen books together Budonoki briefly considered saying something, but thought against it. It seemed that the young lady was more at risk of embarrassment than pain -- he made a mental note to ask after class, just to be sure, and was relieved when he noticed Sophea move to check on the student's well being.

Diana and Helena's assessment of the situation was just as he'd expected -- thorough, thoughtful, and entirely professional. It wasn't hard to imagine that after graduation they would both be valued assets wherever they chose to apply their knowledge and talents. "Excellent answers, both of you! I believe you hit all the key points. It's important to remember that, in the heat of the moment, it may seem like removing a lodged object is the right step -- this, however, can lead to fragments being left in the body and greatly accelerated bleeding of the wound. Everyone in class would do well to remember this."

He toggled the projector to display the next image. It appeared to be a still capture from a video, this time showing a Huntress face-on. She was clutching her stomach and seemed ghastly pale and unsteady, as though she were about to fall over. "This next scenario is less graphic, but sadly much more common. You and your teammates have just ended a narrowly successful battle against Grimm and are seeing to each others' wounds. No one appears to be hurt too badly, but this young lady seems distinctly unwell. Her skin is cool and clammy, her pupils enlarged, and her breathing erratic. She doesn't show signs of any serious battle wounds, but tells you she feels dizzy and nauseous."

"What might you look for to find out what's wrong?"

With everyone looking at her, she blushed harder before looking away. However, after hearing others asking if she was alright, she nodded and smiled. "Yes. I am. Thank you for caring though." She smiled and looked toward Sandy. She smiled at him then noticed an empty seat next to him. "Do you mind if I move next to you? I kinda need your notes."

"ok. Good to hear you're ok. huh? Sure, why not. my notes aren't that great though, You'll likely notice a distinct drop in quality at some point."  As he made the joke about quality dropping he turned and winked at Rackley if he could catch his teammate's eye before starting the path back up to his seat, as he did he noticed the new scenario on the board and decided he may aswell try to answer.   Time to make mum and dad proud. Or embarrass them about how little of their teachings actually stuck, one of the two. With that he stopped on the stairs back to his desk and raised his hand lazily.

Taking note of the response the professor gave, Rackley quickly wrote down the important parts of the lecture so he'll remember it later, but also for Sandy. Speaking of him, Rackley turned and looked over to where Sandy was helping the other student with her things. Catching him winking in his direction, Rackley simply sighed with resignation. Definitely need to make sure to take good notes for the both of us he thought, smiling slightly. Despite his tendency to have a hard time getting along with other people, Sandy and the others on his team made him feel more at ease and not nearly as the awkward, quiet guy he so often came off as.

Noticing that the girl Sandy had helped came and sat next to him, Rackley leaned forward and gave a smile and wave at her, hoping he didn't look awkward in the process. Noticing Sandy raising his hand to answer the questions, Rackley simply turned his attention back on the board and continued to take notes, doing his not to draw the attention of those around, especially the professor.

Diana allowed herself a momentary sense of pride for answering the question well, however it didn't take long for her neurotic mind to point out how easy it had been. Her internal beratement was however interrupted by the sound of Blair's fall. Along with the rest of the class she looked over, her concern was alleviated from seeing Sophea heading over to her.

The new case presented by the doctor was a pretty simple one, and having just answered the last question Diana was perfectly happy to sink into her typical quiet mode for lectures, not wanting to seem lazy she did write down some basic notes on the symptoms.

Sophea did feel a tad jaded having been completely ignored. Blair appeared to be okay though so Sophea returned her attention to the class. Sophos had put up a new slide, an image of a Huntress-in-Training, and was awaiting volunteers. When he listed of the exact symptoms, Sophea was quick to have an answer to her condition. But, Sophos seemed to be looking for more.

Sophea scanned the room, her main focus being Diana and Helena. Diana resigned herself to writing notes, but Sophea was sure that she had at least an inkling of what was going on. She crossed her arms and waited for someone else to play ball.

The tension evaporated from Helena's shoulder upon Doctor Sophos' response. Good, she hadn't goofed. Guess all that time spent in the hospital was worth something, huh?

Then the next slide came, far less graphic than the last. A female, probably around Academy age, seemingly about ready to just hand a half-digested meal back to the ground. She turned to the teacher as he provided further details relevant to the picture.

...Oh. Oh no. This wasn't what she'd concentrated on. She usually went around and helped trauma patients, stopped excessive bleeding and the like. This... was a tough one. Okay, okay, first order the info. Narrow victory. Not hurt too badly. Cool and clammy skin, pale as a ghost. Enlarged pupils. Erratic breathing, unsteady stance. Feels dizzy and nauseous. And, last but not least, common.

Where to look to know what's wrong... Hm. So it shouldn't be explicit just from what she's getting. Hmmmm. She scribbled it all down, hoping to get a better conclusion.

...

So the girl might be vaguely feeling it after the near death experience. But where should she check? "What may she look for to find out what's wrong?"

Shit. She had absolutely no idea. Again, she sllloooowwwwly raised her hand. The best guess she had was "ask if she's afraid". For gods' sake was she useless at non-physical ailments right now.

(OOC: Sorry about the long-delayed response -- it's been a hectic week.)

This one seemed to be stumping more of the students, it seemed. Budonoki understood; without obvious physical signs the condition became something of a riddle. He gave a nod when Sandy and Helena raised their hand to answer. "Yes, mister Smoke and then miss Chlophyll. Your thoughts?"

Being called on Sandy decided to give his response since the other person called on to answer seemed completely stumped.  "Before anything I'd be getting her to lay down on her side so she can't fall over or choke on her own vomit if she passes out or throws up. Also I have a question about the encounter. Were the Grimm we were up against a type that use poison, like those annoying tiny deathstalker bastards?

The professor nodded thoughtfully at Sandy's answer. "A reasonable precaution, and certainly a good one for this situation. As to your question, no: this particular ailment can occur without exposure to any sort of outside toxin... though, I suppose, toxic contamination does increase the likelihood of it somewhat."

Pausing for a moment, Budonoki wondered if perhaps this one was too far off the beaten path to be easily guessed. "... Perhaps a small hint: think beyond the purely physical. A person is, after all, not just biology -- any number of factors can cause bodily distress."

Bugger. Poison was my best guess. At the professor's hint Sandy's hand went to his chin as he thought for a couple of moments muttering to himself slightly.  "Not toxins but they can cause it........beyond physical.......so. It's in her head? OH!"  Suddenly Sandy's hand went from his chin into the palm of his other hand in a closed fist.  "Food poisoning. Is that it?" Shit! What the hell do you do when someone gets food poisoning in the middle of a goddamn mission. I thought you just had to wait for it to pass.

Diana looked up from her notes with a bewildered look, she had dismissed the question as a simple one and was surprised that it was still being discussed. The fact that it was started to shake her own certainty, but then again it was hardly fair to expect most people to know this stuff, besides that's why people were here. She reluctantly raised a single finger, low enough that she could be ignored if someone else took the initiative.

After a long, nearly disturbing period of silence and no sign that either party involved was gonna make a move, Helena raised her hand once again. She doubted that's what it was, but it was more or less her only guess. Keeping it in the air, she said "Excuse me, Doctor Sophos? Could it be a panic attack? Or maybe some other form of psychological affliction caused by the close call battle?"

(OOC: Whoa, did not realize I'd let this thread lapse so badly. My apologies to everyone who's been waiting on a post!)

"Food poisoning. Is that it?"

Budonoki rubbed his chin for a moment while he considered that answer. "Hmm. I admit, I hadn't considered that angle when preparing these exercises. Food poisoning could certainly cause the nausea and dizziness, but unless it was bad enough to cause septic shock it wouldn't quite account for the enlarged pupils, clammy skin, and erratic breathing. Still, I must applaud you for thinking outside the box, mister Smoke."

"Excuse me, Doctor Sophos? Could it be a panic attack? Or maybe some other form of psychological affliction caused by the close call battle?"

Smiling, Budonoki pointed to Helena and smiled. "Very good! Yes, the symptoms we're seeing in this instance are similar to a panic attack, and they are indeed caused by the stress of the battle. What we have here is referred to as 'combat fatigue' -- the aftermath of heightened life-or-death emotional and physical responses hitting the body all at once. Even the most experienced of Hunters are susceptible, unfortunately, and even a wealth of experience isn't a complete defense against so deep-rooted an exhaustion of one's personal reserves." He looked around the room, once again endeavoring to meet every eye. "It's easy to get swept up in the duty -- the heroics, even -- of being a Huntress or Huntsman... but like any other job, over-exertion inevitably leads to burn-out. It can be tempting to go right from one crisis to another, trying to solve each of the world's problems as they cross your path... but it is essential, no matter how strong or capable, that you take time out to look to your own needs and those of your comrades. Food, rest, healthy expression of one's emotions and working through stress, all are vitally important. Maintaining one's self, in all regards, is just as vital to success as maintaining one's weapons."

"If you or a teammate are experiencing combat fatigue, the best advice is to slow down. Sit, sip some water, and just focus on breathing until it returns to a steady, normal pace. Avoid laying down right away unless fainting seems likely, and if so ensure the person rests on their side, not their back. Avoid eating for at least fifteen minutes as well. If, over the next half hour, the condition worsens considerably you should treat the victim as if they've gone into shock and seek immediate medical help."

"Now... one more for the day, I think. Ah, fair warning -- this last image is particularly grisly."

True to his word, what appeared next on the screen was enough to ruin most people's appetites: the victim in this case had severe red, blistering burns centered more or less on their wrist, the inner facing of the arm looking badly scorched with raw, burnt skin coming off in sickly layers. "Dust ammunition backfires, while mercifully rare, can be devastating. It may be tempting to buy the least expensive munitions if you're short on lien but the risk of something like this happening does increase. The victim in this case was using fire rounds when their clip suddenly ignited, exploding almost immediately thereafter. Their Aura was overwhelmed and they suffered extensive second-degree burns on the palm, fingers, wrist, and forearm. Assume that you are at the scene when this happens, have only a standard first-aid kit available, and that there are either no enemies nearby or that they are being kept at bay. What stabilizing care would you render?"

Damn. It really was all in their head. Ah well lesson learned. With the question answered Sandy finally returned to his seat. Just in time to look upon the grisly scene being projected before him and wishing that he hadn't. While able to mostly keep his reaction in check he did visibly grimace at the sight.  "Well that's certainly a nasty one." speaking under his breath he looked to his studying companions in the form of Blair and Rackley.  "Either of you got any ideas on what to do? we may as well try to say something before the brain-boxes get everything."

Nodding while listening to the Professor give his explanation on battle fatigue, Rackley hastily jotted down as much as he could as he followed along with the lesson. He had never personally felt this type of fatigue before, however, he knew it wouldn't be uncommon for that to happen, especially if you've been fighting non-stop for the entire day or longer.

Not noticing Sandy come back to his seat, Rackley grimaced visibly and had to look away briefly to compose himself before looking back at the picture set before him. Hearing Sandy's comment, he simply nodded in acknowledgement. As much as Rackley did not want to have attention drawn to him, this was something he had learned about while out in the wilderness with his father learning to hunt. "A-A-A cool c-compress for s-starters" he stammered, trying to not be nervous around Blair. "You c-c-could p-put it under cool water to cool it down first before p-putting a loose b-b-bandage that won't st-stick to the w-wound on to k-keep it covered until you g-get them to p-proper care."

Letting out a breath, Rackley hoped his response was sufficient for Sandy to answer. No matter how courageous he was feeling, Rackley couldn't bring himself to want to raise his hand to answer the question so he hoped that his partner would be able to do that in his place.

"ok. sounds good. You want to take this one?" Sandy directed the question at Blair but as he was about to ask specifically he realized that she hadn't told him her name and just hoped that she understood he was asking her and not Rackley.
