Title: Through rivalry and friendship... and a bunch of Grimm [closed]
Post by: DEXES on August 19, 2018, 01:37:38 AM
It was a quite Saturday morning in Beacon, and a cold breeze filled the air outside the big academy. It was the perfect morning to lie in bed and recover from all the lessons and learning of the last few days. Not for Mikado Drak. The young Huntsmen-in-training left his dorm room a long time ago and has been sitting in the Academys library ever since.
A book with many drawings and texts about Grimm was opened infront of him and he flicked through the pages. The text itself was only read briefly, what he paid more attention to were the the drawings and the corresponding features added on it's side.
Just as he was about to turn over another page, his scroll vibrated. It was a text message, the transmitter was the Academy.

Dear Mikado Drak

We send you this message to inform you that you have been selected for a training mission in the mountains.

Following is the description of your mission:

A horde of Grimm is approaching the mountain village 'Monaha' at high speed. The inhabitants of Monaha have already begun their evacuation to the neighboring village, but the there prevailing storm and the uneven path to the next village slows down this process to a critical point. The goal here is to get as much time for the evacuation as possible and, if possible, eliminate the horde.

According to reports about the horde we could determine that this mission is suited for a first year student.
Despite all this, we decided not to send you alone.
Your teammate Smokey Emberstone will be accompanying you on this mission, as well as the Huntress Siu Ceong.
We kindly ask you to gather with equipment at the landing platforms outside the Academy by the time stated below. From there, a bullhead will pick you up and bring you to Monaha.

Best regards, Beacon staff.

Mikado stared at his scroll for a moment. He read the message again. Nothing changed. He couldn’t help but let out an annoyed sigh. Of all his teammates, no, of all students at Beacon, it of course had to be Smokey. He could still remember how his 'teammate' pointed his motherfucking cannon sniper at him. And no matter how much it bothered him to say that, not only did the weapon look good, but it could probably also bring a trained Huntsmen to his knees with a good targeted shot. However, this didn’t change his attitude and view towards Smokey. So, why, out of all people, did it had to be him?

He got up and closed the book. The noise of pages being slammed together made Kiro, who lay next to the book on the table, raise his head. Mikado gave the dragon a quick pet on his head and gestured him with a wave to come along, while picking up the book with his other hand. The black dragon responded immediately, jumped at his owners arm and made his way from there over the shoulder to the head, where he then made himself comfortable on the boy’s hair.

Mikado brought back the book before leaving the library to get his equipment. He would leave it to Smokey to tell the rest of the team about their little 'adventure' they’re going to have...

Hm, Siu Ceong...
He never heard that name before, but according to the message, she was supposed to be a graduate Huntress. That didn’t sound to bad. Well, nothing could sound worse that the fact that he and Smokey, alone, went on this mission. Well, not alone-alone, because Siu would be there, but alone in the sense of their team. Alone in the sense of all students at Beacon. It couldn’t get any worse...

It was not long before Mikado geared up with his weapon, dust crystals and bullets, heading for the landing platforms. The bullhead was already there, along with the associated pilot.
"Ahh, the students, excuse me, but shouldn’t there be two?"
"He'll come," Mikado replied as bored as possible. He decided not to wait for Smokey and immediately entered the open Bullhead

Smokey was spending his Saturday morning like most people his age would.  Asleep.  He was only woken up by the sound of his scroll going off.  Still mostly asleep, Smokey rolled over and patted on his nightstand before he finally clasped the rude device in his hands.  As he flipped the scroll on, he squinted as the brightness forced his eyes to readjust far more rapidly than they wanted to.  When his eyes finally re-acclimated to the light, he read through the message he just received.

He then read it again.  There was an internal struggle in his mind.  On one side, there's the opportunity to hunt down Grimm and save people's lives, which is one of the reasons he signed up for the job in the first place.  On the other hand, he had to work with Mikado.  Ever since they first met, Smokey's opinion of Mikado had been...okay, let's not beat around the bush, Smokey thinks Mikado's a prick with a bad attitude.  He tolerates the guy simply because his abilities as a fighter has earned Smokey's begrudging respect.  He can't deny the usefulness or power of Kiro, even if that glorified gecko tried to set him on fire.

So, despite supposedly being teammates, Smokey and Mikado had an unspoken arrangement to deal with each other as little as possible.  During training, classes, or whatever situation they found themselves in, Smokey made a point to stay out of Mikado's way.  Likewise, Mikado has done the same for him.  But this mission has called for Smokey to work specifically with Mikado, as well as a huntress he had never met.  He'd heard the name "Siu Ceong," but there's no face or notable event that he can put with it.  So, to put it simply, he's working with an asshole and a complete stranger.

Well, despite Smokey's reservations about his teammate, people needed help, and he was called for the job.  On the bright side, he'll be working with a full-fledged huntress, so that should be cool.  Rolling out of bed, Smokey quickly got himself ready for the day and packed his equipment.

Arriving at the landing platform, Smokey would arrive just in time to see Mikado disappear into the bullhead. Giving a curt nod to the pilot, he joined Mikado in the airship, though he found a seat moderately far away from his colleague.  Fortunately for the two, neither character were very conversational, and would be perfectly happy to sit in silence.  Smokey spent the remainder of the wait checking through his supplies.

In a bullhead, 15 minutes before the scheduled takeoff of her mission sat Siu Ceong. She is to be shadowed by two first years, Mikado Drak and Smokey Emberstone. Although with the estimated difficulty of the mission it might just be the reverse. What complications exactly are the staff foreseeing to send a huntress to accompany first years on a first-year-level village defense? Couldn't they have picked a level more appropriate for shadowing if that's what they're going for? The wondering mind of Siu rushed to work out possibilities. Starting from the likely ones: White Fang activities? Bandit targets? To less so: Criminal subversion? Border skirmishes? ...Anyway, somewhat out-of-the-way villages like these usually have an interesting heritage of their own, which I can tell Dad about. Cool.

Seeing both of her teammates board is the cue for her to double check everything. Barricades, check. Point Defense, check. That would be it, but there's still a bit of time before takeoff, so she should take the time to get to know them better for the good of all of us, given she's is a complete stranger to them and vice versa, plus even if she's working with two teammates as they are, she does not know anything about the relation of them, but hopefully a good one.
"So, who are you, where are we going to and what would we do there?" A fairly useless question, checking if each of them went on the right bullhead, plus if any of them received more or fewer instructions than she did. In addition, from their reactions Siu might be able to figure out a thing or two about their characters and on each other.

When Mikado entered the Bullhead, he could already see a young woman, who he assumed to be Siu Ceong, sitting in one of the seats. Even though this was the person he needed to work with, he was not up for a conversation and instead sat down quietly in one of the unusually many seats. Just in time to see Smokey enter the Bullhead. He still wasn’t enthusiastic about going on this mission with him, but he slowly started to give it up and accept it. Really slowly.

Quiet prevailed for a short while, until Siu decided to speak up. Mikado gave her an annoyed look. It wasn’t the fact that she was trying to start a conversation that bothered him. It was the question with which she did it. Those questions had been answered quite clearly in the mission description.
"To Monaha," he said with a roll of his eyes, "You know, stop Grimm from killing people." The sarcasm in his voice was clearly audible.

He hadn’t been in the Bullhead for five minutes and the situation already started to annoy him. What a wonderful start!
He paused for a moment, then stood up and walked to the Huntress.
"I'm Mikado, and I suppose you’re Siu Ceong, right?" he asked, hesitating for a second before reaching out his arm for a handshake.

"What he said," said Smokey in response to Siu's question.  He was doing his best to keep his mouth shut, both for the sake of the mission and for his own sanity.  Despite the fact blasting Grimm was basically his entire shtick, he was finding he wanted to be here less and less each minute.  And from the looks of things, this was one of the rare moments where Mikado agreed with him.  But they're both here, and they're here to do a job, and they're going to do it.  Or at least, Smokey is.

The gunslinger is carrying enough ordinance to take down a horde and a half by himself.  If he didn't have to worry about shooting the dragon, Smokey'd wager he could blast through the monsters fast enough to be back by dinner.  But they didn't call just Smokey, noooo.  They had to call Mik--

Stop complaining, he's here at Beacon for a reason, and he got picked for this mission for a reason, just like you.  Get over it, Smokey's thoughts interrupted his internal complaining.  It wouldn't do to arrive at the job site with an already elevated temper, especially in a high stress environment like a village evacuation.  Instead, he turns toward the huntress that would be joining them, as Mikado gets up and makes his introduction.  Smokey, for his part, merely gives a half-hearted wave and says, "Smokey."

Mikado did give a straight answer to the question, is annoyed, and every information checks out. That's completely expected so Siu simply goes on with what she wanted to say.
"I am Siu Ceong indeed. Call me Siu." Siu shakes Mikado hand gratefully as she returns the stand. Having been introduced Siu continued explaining."Now, I know that question was stupid, but it doesn't hurt to be more descriptive. Specifically, the way we stop Grimm from killing people. We are instructed to buy time for the villagers as the primary objective, and eliminate the horde only if doable. While given the threat reports of the horde versus the team sent it might very well be doable, the prioritization would be useful to keep in mind should any complexities arise." Now that explanation could be seen as showing off depending on the person as they may or may not have considered that already, but you can't control what others think so no harm done in Siu's books.

It is about time for takeoff, so Siu signaled the pilot of their readiness. Acting according to the difficulty of the mission Siu decided she should sit back and observe the activity of the two on the flight to Monaha. She wasn't told to but do so but she would try to evaluate them and if the observations are interesting she might file it to the staff.

The pilot stood next to the entrance, listening to their conversation, if one could call it that, and turned to them right after Siu gave him the signal.
"According to the plan, we should arrive in Monaha in three quarters of an hour, If we're lucky, we can arrive there before the storm get's too bad."

He turned around and walked a few steps before he stopped again "And one more thing, please do not underestimate this mission, even a small mistake could let things go dangerously wrong." And with these words he disappeared to the cockpit. Personally, he didn’t doubt the success of the two students and the Huntress. But anything could happen.

Shortly afterwards, the Bullhead launched into the air and headed southwest.
In the meantime, Mikado had returned to his seat and started rummaging in his bag. Mountain and thunderstorm. Most people would go with Lightning dust, but while it does boost that dust type, it could just as well backfire and attract more lightning to the group.

He thought for a moment. Then he put the lightning crystal he had in his hand back and took a fire crystal instead. He would have normally taken it, but since his teammate was wearing armor and carrying his abnormally large weapons, it was probably better that he didn’t. Even if he had enjoyed the sight to see Smokey trying to run away from a lightning bolt.

Mikado gave Kiro the red Dustcrystal, which was taken directly from the dragon and quickly disappeared into its mouth.
He had been listening to Siu in the meantime, but didn’t feel it necessary to answer anything or continue the conversation, so he instead took out his scroll and started tapping around on it. This is going to be a long flight.

Smokey idly listens to Siu prattle on about the mission and objectives.  He doesn't respond, mostly because he feels there's no need to.  Besides, the points she's making, while technically true, don't really carry much meaning for Smokey.

Now, hold on.  Before anyone calls out Smokey for arrogance, hear this out.  Smokey's combat style is pretty binary.  If Smokey's semblance is up and he has ammo left in his gun, he's gonna shoot things.  If not, he either waits or reloads, sometimes both.  There's not much variation, regardless of the objective.  So, yes, Siu is correct in her points, but the method Smokey would use to buy time for the villagers would be the same method he'd use to destroy the horde outright:  kill all Grimm that get in range.

As the pilot makes his announcement and begins the flight, Smokey leans back in his chair and stares listlessly at the ceiling. He's tempted to fall back to sleep, but that's probably not a good idea, so instead he just runs through a mental checklist a few times, just to keep his head busy.  This was probably going to be a long flight.

Smokey is idling but not sleeping. He should though, it's a good idea not to squander away your stamina if you are not preparing, which he already did. It seems like the three of them isn't very equipment heavy, even if the files she's been given tells her to think otherwise about Smokey. As for Mikado, he's feeding Dust to his Dragon. That must be Kiro. Can he speak or comprehend human sentences? Or do you have a semblance bound connection to him? Can- ...he think by itself?  Siu wondered out loud in a triplet of questions. This is really interesting because Fung can do none of that and definitely cannot just follow her around or be miniaturized like the file about them said.

Not realizing she spoke the question and therefore never expecting an answer, Siu started to study the map of Monaha's evacuation. Threat and likelihood of encountered Grimm, time to pass, weather conditions are all to be taken into consideration s when drawing their escape route. Of course, they already have one in mind with more up-to-date and minute information than she does now and is already en route, but it is a good mental exercise and provides backup plans in case their original route becomes unavailable. With that in mind, she started making notes on each of the regions, writing down and pointing out each of their terrain and features, as well as the effect of various weather conditions on the passing speed of them and the types of Grimm that needs to be fended off.

Mikado glanced away from his scroll and over his shoulder to where Siu sat. He knew that this question would come before they even arrived in Monaha.
"He understands and does what I say, that's enough," he said annoyed, before he focused on his scroll again.

Timeskip: 40 minutes later

While the bullhead started to sway a few minutes ago, it now began to rumble wildly as it fought against the storm, struggling to move forward. The lightning, followed by the thunder were clearly heard outside, the wind whistles around the ship and the rain smashed hard on it's surface. With a lot of force, the pilot managed to get the ship to its landing point, and as it approached the ground, the loudspeaker box went on.

"We're here, the storm is already raging, so be careful out there." came the pilot's voice. The loudspeaker clicked off again and at the same time the side doors of the Bullhead opened. Both wind and rain flowed directly into the now existing opening, giving the Huntress and two students a sense of how it is outside.

The say that mountain-storms are aggressive, proved to be true again today. And as if that wasn't enough, it seemed like it was right above them, and it didn't seem to stop soon.
Mikado had to hold his arm in front of the eyes when the wind came up, before he made the jump from the bullhead and landed nimbly on the ground.

The area was large, with slightly uneven ground and a more or less circular shape. The sides were encircled by high mountains, and the only passages were the path in front of them, from where the Grimm should come, and the path behind them, the one leading to Monaha. Both the front and rear path were larger than average, certainly enough space for two bullheads and big cairns lay everywhere.

Mikado looked around. They were there before the Grimm, but who knows how long it will take until the creatures arrive.

Smokey fails to stay awake, and falls asleep only a few minutes into the flight.  However, he is once again rudely awakened by the turbulence as the bullhead rumbles through the storm.    At least that meant the flight went by fast, for better or worse.  Still groggy as the pilot announces their arrival, Smokey winces as the wind and rain splash him even inside the bullhead.   If he weren't so rudely awakened, he might've joked that it was "refreshing."  At the moment, though, Smokey just softly mutters in annoyance as he trudges out of the airship.

As he hit the ground, Smokey pulled out Matchstick and surveyed his surroundings.  Seeing no Grimm around presently, Smokey makes his way over to Mikado.  They might as well try to come up with some sort of plan.

"I don't suppose either of you have an ETA on the horde?" he asks, gesturing to both Siu and Mikado.  "If we have the time, we might be able to setup some sort of trap, or at least fortify our position."

Siu double checked her handouts. They are not dropped at the convoy or the village? Instead they dropped in the middle of squat, not close enough to support the villagers and likely not far enough away from the horde. Well, those two have already dropped so she better follow.

Leaping out into thew rain isn't really a big deal to her, she wore her practical outfit precisely because of the projected weather. Navy colored tunic with cuffed sleeves is just much easier to manage in the rain and clean afterward. What she has to take great care is the landing, picking a spot so she didn't slip and crash-land on her behind, back or head.

Getting down she finally hears the thing she would have done if she was leading the mission: Planning and fortification. However, it seems neither of them brought any scouting equipment better than a telescope which really wouldn't do them much good in terms of providing an ETA or knowing the size and contents of the horde. But "I do". With a wave with her left hand outward she summoned her trusty cranes, all ten at once at her command. Each of them looks just like her but smaller, but devoid of the gun and barricades she carries herself. If not for the great detail down to every nooks and crannies, they would probably be thought of as chibis which Siu wouldn't mind either, it just... defies... her style so much.

With them up Siu delegated the exact scouting to them. "Scouting formation at your orders." Meanwhile With her summoning done she opened comms with Vale Traffic Control as mandated. "Vale ATC, this is Sierra-India-Uniform. On a mission 100 meters southeast of Monaha CCT support tower. 10 Cranes preparing to scout. Also please send the callsign of the closest Bullhead. Out."

"This is Vale Air Traffic Control tower. Position received. Request received. How's the day going? How long's the mission? ...The Bullhead's callsign is Bravo-Echo-Alfa-Zero-Two-One. Out." The control tower and Siu communicate in a slightly modified and easily understandable version of the formal aviation language of Remnant.

With that Siu switches to call the Bullhead that just carried them."This is Sierra-India-Uniform calling Bravo-Echo-Alfa-Zero-Two-One. Do you have enough fuel to carry us to either the evacuation or at least Monaha proper?"

And then Siu tries to radio the convoy. "This is Siu Ceong, the huntsman sent to delay the horde incoming for Monaha. Requesting confirmation of situation." Between all of them and micromanaging the Cranes and her teammates she'll be a real busy bee. Who said the position of sitting way at the back is easy and comfortable?

Mikado continued to look around the field on which they were dropped. It was at least large and had a wide view, both factors that would be in their favor. Still in the size that allowed him to sit carefree on Mikado's head, Kiro stared down the path. The rain pattered hard on the dragon's small body, but it bothered him relatively little. His gaze was directed to the path from where the horde was supposed to come. The Grimm weren’t there yet, but it wouldn’t take much longer.

The dragon finally jumped down from Mikado's head and fluttered to one of the cairns, where he sat down, his eyes still fixed on the path. Some lightning flashed loudly across the sky, so loud that you one could barely hear Mikado's voice.
"You don't seriously think that we still have time to set traps." he called out to his teammate "The best we can do now is wait"

A little further away from their location, the Bullhead just landed when a call came through. It was surprising that he got a signal in this weather, especially when one was in the mountains.

"Beacon told me to drop you off there. The tank would be enough, but to take off in this weather is just to dangerous. I ho-p -ese ci-cum-t-a—es do n— bo-th-e- yo-."
His voice got a blurry towards the end due to the bad signal, until it disappeared.

Silently the pilot looked at his control module. The communication was gone. With a sigh he looked out of the windshield, watching the lightning shoot out the clouds.
He certainly worried too much. The horde was considered beginner-friendly, and for such a mission they had enough firepower. Yes, everything would be fine.
At least that was what everyone thought...

Spoiler: ShowHide

The horde will arrive at the end of my next post. So if you need to do anything, you better do it now.

Watching the huntress make a bunch of flying mini-hers was a bit bizarre, even if he did consider the unique nature of semblances.  However, the far more bizarre act was her letting Smokey and Mikado direct how she should use them.  He gets that this is a training mission, but taking charge and directing other people wasn't really his thing.

"Ugh, really wish they brought Serin on for this," Smokey muttered under his breath, before addressing Siu, "Uh, well, I guess we know where they're supposed to be comin' from, so I guess scout over there and see how long it'll--" Lightning flashed across the sky again, but the thunder didn't cover the sound of the howling Grimm fast approaching.  "Okay, screw the ETA, I wanna know what we're up against.  How big is the horde, are they coming in waves or all at once, who's up first, what's on deck, is anything flying, any heavy armor targets, anything else you think is relevant, go!"  Smokey commands, acting far more assertive now that battle is nigh.

Turning to Mikado, he says, "Listen, let me take the first shot.  I can probably stall the first wave with a volley from Matchstick to buy time for scouting.  After that, I'll have to fall back and reload.  I'll stay out of your way if you stay out of mine."  After that, Smokey moves past the group towards the sound of encroaching Grimm, loading his ice dust cartridge into Matchstick and switching it to its secondary form.

For better or worse, it's time to get to work.

"Understood." Siu started to send the Cranes out as she was commanded. In a 60 degrees arc, two waves of five, one of her common scouting formation.
Ideally, given the difficulty of the mission, she should never have to do anything other than stationing the fleet of cranes at their positions and provide information on the next incoming enemies.
After just throwing her hedgehog barricades on the ground "Use these!" She returned to communications. She's trying desperately to contact the evacuation now, but luck won't be on her side as the weather keeps being an obstacle.

"This is Siu Ceong, the huntsman sent to delay the horde incoming for Monaha. Requesting confirmation of situation."

Please, please respond, I don't think just letting them blow it all up as they describe would do much meaningful development for them.

"Whatever." Mikado said to his teammate and positioned himself in the middle of the field. "Let's get this over with." Loud trample was heard in the distance and a cloud of dust moved to the sky. They were coming.
The loud trampling also made Kiro move into a fighting stance, as his height increased and gave him the look of a true dragon. Big, Graceful, Threatening. The dragon spread its wings but stayed on the ground to watch the horde approaching.

In the meantime, in Monaha, people rushed with bags back and forth and checked if they really had everything. "Come on, we have to go!" called the overseer of the group. He had already tried a couple of times to reach the Huntress chosen for the mission, but no signal came through. One could only hope that they really made it on time and were there before the horde, otherwise they would have a problem. The inhabitants had already gathered with backpacks and finally seemed ready to go. Just then the overseer's scroll responded. "Everything is going as planned, but we need time to get to the neighboring village!" he called out loudly into the small device and hoped that the connection was good enough to bring the message to the other side. Shortly thereafter, the call broke off again and with a sigh, the overseer put his scroll away."Okay guys, let's go!"

Back by the others, the horde had now come so far that their foremost line could be clearly seen. This was also currently the only group that came in this speed. Farther back there were two more Grimm groups who were just waiting for the first to clear the way for them. While creep's and Beowolves rallied in the first line, things like Deathstalker and a single little nevermore were in the last row.
The first group got faster and faster as they saw the three individuals and the Beowolf pack made a loud growl as they came rushing towards them.

Smokey watched the first of the horde appear on the horizon and continued towards them.  In a strange way, he's happy to see them.  It means he gets to vent his frustrations, and boy, does he have some frustrations.  First thing in the morning, he's rudely woken up.  Then he finds out he's going on a mission with just Mikado.  Then he's rudely woken up again by turbulence and this rotten storm. Oh, did he mention that he hates the rain?  Because it sucks.

Smokey focuses on his negative emotions in order to act as a beacon to draw the Grimm to him.  As they charge closer and closer, Smokey levels Matchstick and takes aim.  A smokey glow begins to surround him, before finally solidifying around him, giving him a dark gray outline. Finally--

*Ka-KA-Ko-KOOM!*

7 rounds fire simultaneously, all of them filled with ice dust.  With this volley, Smokey hoped to take out the entire first wave and encase them ice, both completely annihilating the immediate threat and creating an obstacle for the rest of the horde to overcome.  Still, Smokey doesn't waste any time admiring his handiwork, instead immediately falling back after taking his shot, calling out, "Reloading!"  Smokey only has his head turned toward the mass of Grimm, keeping an eye on any Grimm that might have escaped Matchstick's volley.

Siu did not have much to do this for now, after all, this is some easy Grimm the Cranes are reporting in "7 Beowolves, one of them Alpha, 8 Creeps. Deathstalkers and one Nevermore sighted", nothing she needed to help with. Well, except communications, which she heard one, but not precise enough. "We can hold the ground, but please make an ETA of evacuation."
It's also time to contact the Air Traffic Control. "This is Sierra-India-Uniform, we're engaging with the Grimm, altitude 5 meters to ground level and steady. Out."
Then it is just watching the Grimm and watching them fight. The ice volley is impressive but it's almost as slow as muskets in ye olden days. Let's see what Mikado and Kiro offers.

Mikado watched as Smokey unleashed his volley and took out most of his opponents. In addition, there was now a bluish ice wall blocking most of the path. Not bad.

The Grimms who weren’t trapped by the ice, including 2 Beowolves, 3 creeps and the Alpha, continued to storm toward them. In the meantime, Mikado had split his staff in two and had the two halves stretched out in front of him, shotgun barrel aiming at the height of the Grimm's heads. He started with the Creeps. Not only were they the weakest of them all, they were also the slowest, leading to a quick death. Next were the Beowolves who found their end in the same way as the Creeps.

Only the alpha was left, but Mikado stopped shooting and lowered his weapon. Why should he, the Alpha was busy extinguishing his blazing fur. Yeah sure, it was raining, very strong even, but Kiro had consumed more than enough dust to have enough fire to set the Alpha on fire.

Only shortly after the Alpha dissolved in black matter and disappeared in the air. But the victory was short lived since the next opponent was already on their way. The second wave had already advanced so far that they were only a few meters from the ice wall away. The second wave comprised of Ursae and a small beowolf pack, this time without Alpha. The Beowolves were able to squeeze through the sides of the ice wall and rushed straight to the two students, but the Ureae had to stay behind, and were busy to scratch through the ice.

Mikado was ready to attack right away, but it didn’t come to that as the ground underneath opened and his leg was pulled into the hole. He managed to free himself from the grip of the underground Grimm, but this didn’t happen without a few scratches. After pulling his leg away and taking a few steps away from the hole, he turned to Smokey, "Here are Underminer!"

Smokey tutted when he saw his volley didn't catch the entire wave.  He had at least hoped to get the alpha in the blast, but alas, it fell to Kiro's breath.  That was a different kind of annoying, but it couldn't be helped.  With the first wave cleared, Matchstick reverted to revolver form to reload.  Unfortunately, Fate wouldn't allow him to do so in peace.

For starters, the next wave had arrived, and although the ice Grimm sculptures acted as an obstacle for the Ursae, Beowolves darted down the sides of the path with relative ease, barreling straight for both Mikado and Smokey.  But that wasn't the worst part of it.  Just as Mikado called out his warning, an Underminer had opened up a hole underneath him as well and attempted to drag Smokey into the abyss.

It didn't come to that though.  The Underminer, despite its strong grip, would find that its prey wasn't moving.  In fact, instead of it dragging Smokey into the hole, Smokey, in combination with the effects of his semblance and his own brute strength, actually yanks the mole-Grimm out into the open and then slams it onto its back.  He followed up with an aura-enhanced stomp onto its un-shielded underbelly and the only thing left was a disintegrating corpse.

The Beowolves, on the other hand, would be a bit more of a problem.  As the first creature comes barreling at him, Smokey growls right back at it.  As the claws try to rake his sides, Smokey thwacks the Grimm hard with Matchstick, hoping to snap its neck in one blow.  Unfortunately, all this action means he doesn't get very far into reloading, and will have to continue into the next turn.  Hopefully Mikado doesn't mind picking up a bit of slack.

Thanks to the two Underminers attacking Mikado and Smokey, Siu is given ample warning and can act proactively rather than reactively. by forcefully stepping on the ground beside her the vibration tricks the Underminer into bursting out beside her and when it attacks with their front claw at thin air Siu shoves her gun at its exposed underbelly and turns it into black smoke. Three underminers... "Might be a foreman!" Siu cried out to alert the two juniors and started using one of her hedgehogs to make rhythmed beats on the ground to hopefully lure it out instead of being ambushed again or worse, letting it slip into the village. As for the two's performance, it's too soon to make any insightful observation, but she likes the way Smokey capitalizes on his literal stone wall ability.

Also, Siu realized she isn't sending the Cranes far enough ahead to forewarn themselves of the incoming Grimm long enough, so she rectified that and hopefully she can get to know what kinds of Grimm are coming next.

Compared to the first attack of the Underminers, the second one was a cinch to dodge, as Mikado immediately jumped backward as the ground beneath him threatened to open again. He had his weapon quickly transformed into the Kusarigama and flung its blade towards the Underminer. He managed to hit it and hurled it with a swing out of the hole and to the surface. As the Underminer swung through the air, Mikado quickly put two bullets in its now exposed belly, making it disappear even before the blade was pulled back to him. And not a second too late, as the Beowolf already charged at him. He managed to catch the Grimm's paw with the Kusarigama's chain, followed by a kick against its leg and the blade sinking in its head.

When Mikado looked up, the field was mostly empty. Only a single Beowolf was left as his two colleagues were just giving in to Kiro's flames. The Beowolf seemed disoriented for a second and looked back and forth between the students taking a mad dash towards Smokey, but was shot down during its sprint by Mikado and crashed to the ground where he then disintegrated.
"This time we take the first shot," he said to Smokey before turning to the cracking ice wall, "Kiro, get ready"
At the command, the dragon stood next to its owner. Were it not for the weather, you could see a light steam coming out of his nostrils as he waited for the wall to collapse.

In the meantime, the Foreman of the underminer had started its attack, but the beats it perceived didn't give him the ability to pinpoint the movements from above, so he dug up where the beats were coming from, trying to make them stop.

Smokey was prepared to thwack the remaining Beowolf with Matchstick once again, but Mikado's shot deprived him of the opportunity.  Glancing towards his teammate as he calls out, Smokey simply responds, "Fine by me," and resumes reloading.  Two ursae shouldn't be much of a problem.  In the meantime, he makes his way over to where the foreman is currently digging up.

Right as Siu raised her barricade after a strike the foreman opens up the ground underneath the spot, but all it can find is thin air and a pair of shoes right in front of it. Not wasting time she immediately kicks it into the air out of the ground, but the foreman attempts to cling to her so she had to shake it off by doing kicks repeatedly. The foreman curls up in the air to protect it's underbelly but Siu just turns it into black smoke by putting a longer burst into it.

Two Ursae is not that tough to handle, so Siu opted to look through the Cranes to see what is coming up next.

As the giant fists of the Ursae blared again against the ice wall, it finally gave in and fell to the ground in many pieces. With the rattling sound of the ice on the hard floor, the two Grimm stormed forward on all fours.

Both Mikado and Kiro stood still. A little closer. Only a little bit more... now! The area in front of them was shrouded in huge flames that covered the ground and cut off the path of the Ursae. But it was already too late for the Grimm.
In the attempt to stop before the flames, one of the two Ursae fell over his own legs, rolled over the flames and as he wanted to straighten up again, Mikado had already sunk his blade into its unprotected neck. One done, one missing.

The second Ursa was damaged by the flames but not defeated. The Ursa stormed toward the next best target, in this case, Mikado, but it didn't reach him as Kiro threw himself on it and rolled over the ground a couple of times. They were scuffling
with each other, but it ended in a victory for  Kiro. Though this didn't end completely harmless. The damage was kept low, and the pain-link, therefore, left no inconvenience for Mikado.

After Mikado brush some dust off his clothes, he started to reload Pcok and turned to Siu "What's next?"

A little further away came the third wave. Among them were two Deathstalkers, one slightly larger than those seen in the Emerald Forest and the other about half as tall. In addition, a Nevermore flew over them, not yet fully grown and also didn't
seem to be too big of a problem. The worst was the one Deathstalker.

But, the real problem starts much further behind the wave. Still far enough behind to stay uncovered.

Watching Siu take out the foreman, Smokey huffed a bit.  Outside of his initial volley, he hasn’t really done much.  As Mikado takes out the last two Grimm, Smokey quickly surveys the area and finds no immediate threat.  With that in mind, he deactivates his semblance, putting it on an early cooldown.

There’s not much use for it right now, anyways.  Best to let the downtime pass and have it back up as soon as possible instead of waiting for it to go down at a critical moment.  In the meantime, though, there’s still not much he can do other than take a quick breather.

Seeing Mikado and Kiro dispatch the Ursae with relative ease makes Siu take notes. There's at least one part where it could get better though, such as standing closer so that the breath attack comes quicker and harder to brace or evade for the Grimm.

As for his request, uh, this could be hard to deal with. "Two Deathstalkers, tree height and half of that. Mid-sized Nevermore. What do you do?" The larger Deathstalker doesn't make an easy or even moderate target for two first-year students most of the time but Siu is able to handle it with her Cranes, and hopefully the two know their strength well enough to either directly ask her for help or really impress her with their prowess. In the meantime, Siu had started to deploy her barricades by extending them and bolting them to the ground, with one of them having a plate put on so she can set Point Defense up with her bipod.

Mikado gave Siu a curt nod. Deathstalker and a Nevermore, eh? It would be feasible, but the one Deathstalker could be tough.

The rain intensified, but the lightning became less and the storm seemed to calm down, it would not be long before it stopped. Now the two students were able to see the upcoming Grimm as well, or at least the Nevermore, who glided high in the air and whose eyes now fell on the battlefield. It let out a loud cry, angled its wings, and prepared to launch down every second.

Mikado glanced at Kiro, then at small Nevermore. The two creatures were about the same size, with the difference that the Nevermore protrudes only a few inches above Kiro. It would certainly drain a lot of Kiro's health, but they would definitively get rid of the Nevermore. However, before Mikado sent the dragon into the air, he threw him another red dust crystal to fill up his reserves. He could use it. When the dragon finally ventured into the air, Mikado turned to Smokey, the grip firmly around his Bo "Let's get it over with"

Two Deathstalkers and a Nevermore?  That might be a bit of a problem.  It's not that he can't kill them, Matchstick's firepower is definitely more than enough for that.  The problem is getting close enough so the damage actually takes.  For starters, Nevermores have that annoying ability to fly.  That means unless it wants to take a bite out of him, it can easily keep out of range of attack.  He hates to admit it, but Mikado is much more suited to take it on than he is.

The Giant Deathstalker, though, is a different beast entirely.  While a point-blank 7-round Matchstick volley to the face would probably be enough to do the trick, that requires getting into point-blank range with all seven shots still loaded.  And Deathstalkers are particularly good at keeping things away: they have large claws that can extend far out that act simultaneously as shields, mauls, and clamps all at once.  On top of that, the tail is an incredibly dangerous weapon on its own.  That makes three obstacles Smokey would have to get past just to be in range.

Then there’s one more detail: Deathstalkers possess tremendous strength.  Smokey’s semblance renders him partially immune to forced movement.  The keyword there is “partially”.  While he could theoretically arm wrestle a Beringel and not lose for thirty seconds, a Deathstalker’s power eclipses Smokey’s limit.   If it wanted too, it could push Smokey aside, or possibly even pick him up and throw him.  And although he probably wouldn’t go very far, the point remains that getting close enough to deliver Matchstick’s full payload is nigh-impossible…on his own.

Before that, though, there’s one other plan of attack Smokey could consider.  Siu is a bona-fide huntress and a Beacon graduate to boot.   She could probably take this thing on with relatively little effort on her part.  But—well—Smokey doesn’t want her help.  These giant monsters are the exact type of creature Smokey signed on to hunt.  They’re his meal ticket, his money-makers, the things that bring home the bacon.  If he runs to a huntress for help with this, then he’ll never get the money he needs.

Smokey turns to Siu and says, ”Hey, you can take care of the little one, right?” before turning to Mikado and continuing, ”Listen, I can take out that big one if I can get close enough.”  He pauses for a brief moment.  He really doesn’t want to say this part.  ”Problem is I need to get through those claws and that tail, and I can’t do that on my own.  I’m—“ get it together Smokey. ”I’m gonna need your help.”

While saying that, Smokey switches out dust cartridges, going from ice to fire.  Anything that takes the full force of this volley is going to have a seriously bad time.

That's interesting, they wanted to deal with the big one asks Siu to clear the two small ones. Well, Smokey wants to anyways. Nodding back at him Siu let the Cranes open fire while angled to cover different directions. The Nevermore tries to evade by steering sharply and braking suddenly in the air, but it doesn't work as well when the gunfire comes from 5 different direction covering roughly the sides, over and under as well as heal on, and soon it turns into a hole-riddled nest that would suit bees perfectly if not for the fact that it dissolves into blue smokes soon after that.

On land the smaller Deathstalker faired no better, since even though Crane-sized guns are largely ineffective against them, the grenade-sized rockets are and can bomb out its legs with 5 Canes going for it. Then it turns into a sitting scorpion and can are easy pickings.

That just leaves the major threat, the large Deathstalker. Siu pointed her gun at its direction. Breathe in, focus. They can do this.

Mikado gave Smokey a quick glance. So he needed his help, eh? Well then-

His "inner monologue" was interrupted and he looked up to see Siu's Cranes kill the Nevermore. He snorted annoyed. Why even bother to send the dragon into the air when Siu kills the Nevermore anyway? Although he should be grateful that he no longer has to take care of it, he was still annoyed. Mikado quickly whistles Kiro back to himself, just in time, as the big, or rather huge, Deathstalker lunged into the area of the battlefield and gave a gruff battle cry.

"Let's do this." Mikado said to Smokey before charging at the Deathstalker. He gave Kiro a quick hand signal and in the same movement split his staff in two, which, however, was still held together by the Metallic Chain of the Kusarigama. The Deathstalker had already prepared his attack and stride out with his powerful claws to attack Mikado, but he ducked just in time and slipped easily under the attack. However, this didn't happen without piercing the end of his Kusarigama with full force into the claw of the Grimm, so that it stuck in the hard, but free of the bone-like armor skin.

Mikado slid a little further underneath the Deathstalker's abdomen, before he quickly rolled to the side, rolling out between the second and third pair of legs, and pulled vigorously on the Kusarigama piece that he still held in his hands. Without question, his strength was not nearly enough to bring the Deathstalker to the ground, but it didn't have to. As the Grimm tried to turn around to Mikado, his legs tangled in the small but solid chain of the Kusarigama and put him in a staggering position.

Waaam!

The full fore of Kiros mass rammed into the wavering body of the giant scorpion and tossed it aside, taking damage himself as a side effect. Mikado hissed slightly as he felt the pain in his chest, but didn't let himself be distracted. The rest of the Kusarigama chain quickly wrapped itself around the still free claw of the Deathstalker and was pulled back by Mikado, whose putting all his strength into holding the Deathstalker back. "Now!" He hissed loudly to Smokey.

Man, if he doesn't hurry, this will end very bad very soon.

While Mikado was still wrestling with the Deathstalkers claws, his tail rose into the air, the spiky tip dangerously raised to attack, but Kiro managed to bite into it and pulled it back before anything bad could happen. Just as his owner, Kiro, despite his size, had to fight with all his strength against the power of the Deathstalker. None of them would be able to hold this up long- It was now or never, Smokey's next move would decide everything

Between Mikado and Kiro, they could each grab one claw, and that would leave only the tail.  I can probably dodge the tail.  Still, can scrawny-ass over here actually hold a claw off long enough for me to get in close enough? Smokey thinks to himself as he falls in behind Mikado.  To be frank, he has doubts about Mikado’s brute strength, and he can’t help but wonder how lizard boy’s going do it.  So it comes as a complete surprise when—

Waam!

Smokey goes slack-jawed when the Deathstalker is knocked clean on its side with both its claws and tail restrained, albeit temporarily.   He can’t deny it, that was smooth.  Its only when Mikado shouts that Smokey comes back to his senses.  Despite the impressive showing, its clear Mikado alone isn’t enough to put the monster down for good.

Switching to volley form, Smokey reactivates his semblance and charges to the exposed underbelly.  The Deathstalker’s struggles mightily, but as long as those chains hold, Smokey can approach it without incident.  When he finally reaches the underbelly of the beast, he holds up Matchstick and jams it against (if not through) its abdomen and squeezes the trigger.  All seven rounds fire off and wreak havoc on the Grimm’s body.  A fire-enhanced, point-blank blast ought to be more than enough to kill it outright then and there.

The storm did not hinder Siu one bit, be it the wind or the rain, as she watched the two make it happen. An immobilization involving a claw dodge and plenty of maneuvering followed by two surprisingly mighty show of force, culminating in a one-hit kill of the giant Deathstalker. It's certainly impressive, but it's not time to celebrate yet. The pulverized chunks started smoking as Siu returned to play her role and do some more scouting. By the way, isn't the previous intel underestimating the horde a bit? If they have sent a team of first years they might have been in a bit of trouble. Well, they don't have recon this close so excusable I guess.

As Siu ran her mind the Cranes scattered again to recon the area and having each other's backs, giving Siu as some forewarn that just proved to be very useful.

Sorry for the late reply, school's been hell lately.

Mikado bit his lip as he felt his arms slowly giving in. It was a matter of milliseconds, between the near yielding of his weapon and the death of the Deathstalker. Fortunately, the latter happened. The Deathstalker disintegrating and Mikado let out a quiet sigh. The chain of his Kusarigama retraced, letting the two ends smash together and switching the weapon back into the Bo.

"Anything else coming?" he asked, shoving some wet hair off his face. The rain got less with each drop, but a light drizzle remained. In the distance, the clouds were already breaking, letting a dimming light shine over the peaks of the neighboring mountains. All this looked like an end to a children's book, and that's also what it felt like. The mission was rated "Beginner-Friendly", and although it ended up slightly more tough, they still did it. What else should come after this Deathstalker? The strongest Grimm always came last.

With the rain barely present, Mikado pulled off his jacket, held it in front of him and squeezed the water out of it. He didn't really seem to expect more Grimm. Why should he, it would probably not be a mission for two first years, excluding Siu, if now even stronger and more dangerous Grimm arrive. However, you can never be too careful. Maybe a pack beowolves had strayed from the horde and will arrive any second now. Who knows. After his jacket had lost most of the water, he pulled it over his shoulders again and stationed his Bo in the associated holster on his back. Kiro, on the other hand, stayed in his read- to-fight, grown, form, watching the path in front for a few more seconds, then laid down on the damp ground.

Further away from the group, in the chair of the Bullhead sat the pilot, who had brought the group of three to their location earlier. He had a slight grin on his face as he received the notification that the population of Mohana was now fully evacuated. Siu most likely received the same message.

He had just started writing a message to Siu, asking if they were ready to be picked up when a ringing echoed through the room. The sound of an emergency call. The message was played by itself, a loud voice coming out of the speaker.

"Take the students away from there!" the voice almost screamed. At his next words, his grin changed to a horrified, shocked expression. "That wasn't the Horde! These were just the vanguard! The Horde is still coming!"

Silence...

Then a loud cry filled the air. Immediately, the pilot ran to his windshield and looked out. His eyes widened. "Oh fuck," he exclaimed as he saw the shadow of two Nevermore. They were both relatively tall, though not yet fully grown, but big enough to fly into a house and tear down its walls. More growls and chirping echoed in the distance. How could one not know that there was more Grimm? Wasn't there anyone who saw and reported them? But who would stand there and just wait to count how many Grimm there were? Maybe some knew that there was more Grimm. Or maybe they were all dead. The fact was that they underestimate the horde, and to put it bluntly, they were fucked.

With shaky hands, he began to write a message to Siu. Maybe he could warn the group in time. He pressed the send button, his eyes fixed on the small device. Please let her answers.

Mikado would like nothing more than to go back to his dorm and change out of the wet clothes, but the mission's description was pretty clear about its one request. Eliminate the horde if possible.
They could certainly take down the Grimm, but not without taking quite some damage themselves.
"Yeah, let's go." he finally said. He didn't like the idea of staying nor leaving, but following the word of a trained huntress was certainly not wrong.

With no enemies in sight and his gun finally reloaded, there wasn’t much Smokey could do at the moment.  The only thing he does is remove the fire dust cartridge from Matchstick.  No point in wasting dust on beowolves.

The nevermores are going to be a problem, and a problem that he can’t really solve at that.  Smokey doesn’t really have a way to kill them if they keep their distance.  Well, they’re Grimm, so they’ll probably dive for him eventually, and if he plays it smart he could probably nab one of ‘em with a few shots down the gullet.  But even then, that’ll probably require a fair amount of luck.  He hates to admit it, but he’s been kind of useless during this expedition.

At least the village is evacuated, which means the group can just call in the bullhead and start preparing to head back to Beacon.  Mission accomplished, right?

Alright, time to run. If there really is a main horde much larger in size than the one they just went up against then it's certainly above us three to safely eliminate. Maybe if I, but, that's too risky to attempt.

It's when a flash went across 3 of her Crane's feed after which they went silent that forces Siu to pick up her pace. At this point it's clear that the Nevermores are far bigger threats to the group than the Beowolves, so she got them to focus her efforts on one of them to take one down first.

"Time to run, there's no benefit to killing Grimm that don't get to hurt anybody. Plus the rain is really getting my clothes sticky all over. Good work you two, it took basically minimal assistance from me to allow you to wipe them out. Now go before we overstay our welcome." With that, Siu started to get moving pretending to be nonchalant. The sooner they hightail out of the place the better.

Mikado stared at the path in front of him for a while longer. They did what they were supposed to do, the villagers were save and evacuated and the reported part of the Horde was taken down. Judging by what was next to come, the obvious smarter idea was to leave, but still, he would have liked to fight a bit more. Sure, the Deathstalker had already been a challenge in itself, for which it nedded the full strenght and concentration of the two students, plus the help of Mikados Semblance. But they did it. They did it without even suffering the loss of Aura. Even if Mikado had to work together with Smokey to achieve that. Even now, he wished to have any other student of Beacon by his side, but otherwise was he grateful for the bundle of firepower assigned to him.

He turned around, turned his back to the path and its Grimm which loudly announced there soon arrival, and followed Siu to the opposite path. During the turn Mikado brought his thumb and index finger to his mouth whistled through it. The whistle made Kiro look up. The first movement the dragon has made since they defeated the deathstalker. The aura dragon stood up silently and walked to his owner, still in its grown form. After all, they were still on the open field. And as if this had been the Secret Signal, a black avian shot out of the shadows of the mountains and circled above them.

Mikado didn't say anything. He just stared at the giant bird. The bird. One bird. Singular. Well, he shouldn’t complain, this eventually made the situation easier. This looked like a fight from which they could not leave so easily. And it was to late to try, as the Nevermore had already seen them and spread his wings to unleash the rain of razor sharp feathers upon them. Mikado was able to dodge the incoming attack, but after his dodge roll to the side, he felt a stinging pain in his leg. He looked up, his eyes falling on Kiro, who with his size and lack of reaction didn't has the time to escape the attack. Despite the pain in his leg, which is now slowly fading away, Mikado grabbed his Bo from the holster and grasped the staff with both hands.

In the turmoil of the feather rain, the four Beowolves managed to snuck into the battle and were now creeping slowly towards them from different angles, all while the screaming Nevermore above their heads prepared its next attack. Great, just great.

This shouldn’t be a problem for a trained huntress, but as long as he had enough strength to stand on his feet, he also had enough strength to kill the Grimm. He looked to his side, right at Smokey, "You think you can handle the wolves yourself?" he teased him, already knowing the answer.

With the Nevermore ready to attack again every second, Mikado didn't waste any time. As before, he attracted Kiro's attention with a quick but clear whistle and then motioned him to the sky with a quick gesture. There wasn’t much he could do against the giant bird. Unless the Nevermore comes down close enough for him to ram his kusarigama into its flesh, he had no choice but to send Kiro up there.

Mikado watched the dragon, considering any tactics that might help him now. In a 1v1 between the two, it could get pretty bad fast and end against his favor. He glanced at the Nevermore and then Kiro, who was only about half the size of the beast, then looked back at the Nevermore.

"Kiro, taunt! Make him follow you!" he finally called to him. This plan would most likely go wrong, but as long as there was a chance of success, you had to take it.

Smokey was about to take Siu’s advice and start heading to the rendezvous point, but the untimely arrival of the Nevermore managed to thwart that plan.  With no cover and no real shielding to protect him, Smokey was forced to take the full brunt of the volley.  Fortunately, not too much damage was done, and the pain quickly passed.

Still, the group’s out in the open in this valley, and Smokey has nothing that can bring down that bird from this far away.  Well, there is that, but he’d rather not bring that out at this point in the game.  The mission’s already accomplished, and as much as Smokey would like to go trophy hunting, there are other, bigger fish to fry.  In the meantime, though, that leaves him on scrub duty.  Shooting individual Beowolves feels like a waste of ammo, but there’s really not much else to do.

Ignoring Mikado’s teasing and leveling Matchstick at his quarry once again, the familiar gray aura surrounds and solidifies around Smokey as he activates his semblance one more time.  Then, two shots fire off from the revolver, taking out two of the four landlocked Grimm, as Smokey strafes towards the remaining two Beowolves in an attempt to bait them towards himself.  If they charge him, then at least he can kill the remaining two without wasting any more ammo.

As he’s doing all this, though, there’s one thing that’s bothering him. Didn’t Siu say there were two Nevermores?  Did Siu take one out with her scouts?  Or did it fly off toward another target…?

”Oi, weren’t there supposed to be two of those things?  What happened to the other one?” Smokey asked, deciding to voice his concerns.  Best case, he’s fretting over nothing and the Nevermore buzzed off somewhere.  But if something else caught its eye, such as a transport or an evacuation ship, the hunters might need to shift priorities.

"The Cranes are holding it off! Try run and gun, just get away from here to the bullhead ASAP." said Siu as she helps by shooting at the Nevermore trying to catch Kiro.

Just what could be out there? Siu knows if she thinks too hard about it she'll get them there even faster, so she banished that thought and focuses on taking down the enemies at hand, which includes both Nevermores. But she had a feeling she might need to use that. It won't be pleasant, not the aftermath at least, but it might be what it takes to protect them.

Seemingly unimpressed by the dead of the two pack members, the remaining two beowolves moved closer to Smokey, teeth bared and ready to rush at him. Their complete attention was on the young Huntsmen-in-training and not a second later, the first charged forward in an obvious attempt to attack him with his claws. Shortly thereafter, the second jumped forward, with a similar scratch attack targeted a little higher up on face lever.

Mikado paid no attention to his teammates, knowing that he was more than capable of taking care of the Grimm, instead, he just stood there, looking gravely at the two creatures in the sky. The Nevermore was already close behind the, compared to him, much smaller dragon and caught up more with every second, there wasn't more left until he would be able to grab him. Time to act. Another whistle echoed through the air, but this one differed from its predecessor in that it consisted of three separate whistles, the first two short and the third slightly longer. For outsiders, these seemingly random whistles could mean anything, but for Kiro it was a clear command: Dive, and that was exactly what he did. The dragon leaping down, no sign of stopping as he approached the ground faster and faster, with the Nevermore in tow. And he wouldn't stop, that is unless Mikado tells him to. That had to be perfectly timed.

The command came only when both creatures were shortly away from hitting the ground. Kiro's wings unfolded and stretched out on both sides as he slid past the dusty floor, whereas the black avian behind him crashed against it with full force. Size could only bring one so far without agility. The impact wasn't enough to kill the bird, but with him on the ground and briefly motionless, the huge storm of fire could be unleashed upon him until the black poultry completely evaporated.

With two down, Smokey could now focus his attention on the two remaining Grimm, both of which were likewise focusing on him.  That’s just the way he wants it, too.

As the first Beowolf lunged at him, Smokey makes no effort to dodge.  In fact, he steps into it, almost welcoming it.  As the claw crashes into the gun-lugger’s side, it loses all momentum.  It might as well have been a tickle, as far as Smokey was concerned.  Now that the beast is temporarily still, Smokey grabs it by wrist and swings it around, smashing it into the Beowolf on his flank just as it tried to make its strike.  With the two creatures of Grimm now shoulder to shoulder, Matchstick’s spread is more than enough to finish both in one pull of the trigger.

*Ka-Koom*

With a smirk, Smokey called out, ”Two-for-one deal, get ‘em while they’re—“ nearby, a certain avian Grimm crashed into the ground and then was promptly incinerated. ”—hot,” he trailed off dejectedly.  That kinda took the wind out of his sails.

Still, with both the Beowolves and the Nevermore out of the way, Smokey quickly swivels his head to make sure there were no other immediate threats before shouting, ”So, uh, we’re done here, right?  Let’s call that bird down and get outta here.”  He’s ready to wrap this mission up, he’s wasted enough ammo on overtime as it is.

"Yeah, let's go. Just let me deal with that Nevermore first." With that said Siu returned to combating the Nevermore in a distance.

The Cranes flies in circles relative to the Nevermore, never giving it a chance to get close, at least that was the plan until it attempts to ram a tree and took two more of her Cranes down that way, although it hit the tree too and is finally taken out. Without waiting for the bird to disintegrate Siu sent two of the Crane even further into the forest and the other three back to herself. As soon as she visually confirms the horde she is going to report that and get out, without a need to engage them.

Were those the last ones? Was it finally over?

"Let's just go, the population of Moundan is safe after all," said Mikado and went to the path leading away from the battlefield. For all he cares, a huge fourty-foot huge Goliath can walk through here, he was leaving! Siu also didn't seem to have seen any further Grimm, otherwise, she would have said something. Either that were the last ones, or they turned around and left, whatever it was, it was over now.

Mikado whistled Kiro back to him, letting him also immediately shrink back to his usual size. As far as he knew, the pilot said that he would wait in front of Moundan, and that when the mission is done he would pick them up the three and bring them back to Beacon, so that was their next target. Before he walked off though, he turned back to Smokey, with a look that says, 'Are you coming now?'

Jup, this mission has changed nothing about his relationship with this little gunfreak.

”Yeah, yeah, I’m comin’” Smokey shouted to Mikado in response to the other’s look, making sure to whisper under his breath the word ”prick” so his “teammate” couldn’t hear.  Sure, Smokey will admit it, Mikado’s got some skills.  But he’s still a gigantic asshole as far as the gunslinger is concerned, so the sooner he’s out of this dump, the better.  Maybe then he could finish his weekend nap.

Deactivating his semblance, Smokey pops open his revolver and reloads, just in case anything else pops up.  Since Siu hasn’t seen anything else, or at least hasn’t notified the two of anything, Smokey quickly jogs his way to the rendezvous point.  At least they can say “Mission Accomplished”.
