ATTENTION YOUNG HUNTERS AND HUNTRESSES!

Are you brave, strong, and seeking adventure? Do you wish to prove yourself as the prodigal hunter of you generation? Or are you simply exceedingly poor?

Then I may have the MISSION. FOR. YOU!

Recently, one of the rarest and most elusive Grimm on record - the elusive AMALTHEA - has been spotted on the outer edges of the former settlement, Mountain Glenn. This particular is notable for the particular specimen embedded in its back - an ANCIENT, IMPORTANT, and EXTREMELY COLLECTIBLE sword! I desire this piece for my PRIVATE collection, and will pay handsomely FOR ITS RETRIEVAL! I don't care about your age, skill level as long as the sword is in PRISTINE CONDITION!

I'm seeking a team of approximately three students, perhaps with a professional hunter escort, in order to retrieve the sword. If you care to apply for the job, simply reach out to me at 555-555-5555. The monetary reward will be approximately 100,00 lien per student.

I look forwards to hearing from interested individuals soon!

Sincerely Yours,
Mr. Mallard.

"...Right, with that out of the way, here's what we're dealing with: an Amalthea actually has been spotted on the outskirts of Mountain Glenn. For those of you unaware of the Grimm's reputation, it's a harbringer. Whenever one of those shows up somewhere, some sort of natural disaster will usually hit the area within seventy-two hours of it's initial sighting."

"Assistant Headmistress Printempts wants eyes on the ground, tracking it down and maybe taking care of it, best-case scenario. We see an Amalthea approximately twice a decade, and never in the same place. If you want a chance at making history, then I suggest accepting this invite ASAP. If you're signing up, pack enough for a few weeks of wilderness survival. We don't know how long we'll be out there."

"The monetary reward for that sword or whatever is just a nice bonus. Stupid student debt..."

Welcome to the plot signups for Historical Hearsay, a PC v. Grimm thread, aimed around tracking and (eventually) hunting down a new grimm of original design known as the Amalthea, soon coming to a Grimm catalogue near you. The thread will be written choose-your-own-adventure-kinda style with the stipulation there's a full chance that will change, depending on how the thread progresses. The theme is mystery, and your OC will be tracking the Amalthea through dangerous, generally-uncharted wilderness.

Moreso than anything, this is a thread that I want to be a story for interested participants. There's an equal chance you'll succeed or fail the mission, though I'll do my best to nudge you towards the former - and you may end up a happy medium. However, it's also dangerous. The Amalthea is a mysterious grimm by in-universe standards, with much of the information surrounding it based around rumor and legend.

Basically, you're going to be facing some unique stuff.

I'll be reaching out to those who sign up to ask about something you want to accomplish in this thread for your character (within reason, you're not going to get an auto-win), whether it's a emotional realization or simply something that'll let them get a cool scar. You'll be welcome to change this at any given time, as well.

I'm opening up slots for three poeple, because that feels like a good number to hope for given the current activity levels of the board. If more are interested, I'll open it up to four. Characters will be chaperoned by Malina Nahualli-Roth, who's been generously loaned to me by Dr. Gustave because I didn't feel like creating an entire staff character.

Slots are listed below, and they'll be updated accordingly. Please tell me the name of the character you want to enter, and link their profile:
1. Diana Farran
2. Lucas Meridiem
3. Isabella Aozora

If you've got any questions, feel free to DM me here or on the Discord. Preferably the Discord, I'm way more responsive there. Before you sign up, it's appreciated if you know you'll be able to post consistently, though I'm not in a rush to write this.

Overall, thanks for reading, and happy hunting!

Beacon Academy / Sky's the Limit [Closed]
« on: January 20, 2020, 09:20:56 PM »
In Prism's opinion, there's too many things she could compare to the sky.

At her current height, her best estimate is champagne. The air is light and bubbly up this high, freshly-chilled and crisp enough to bite the lungs with every inhale. The sky is an endless bowl above her, and the academy grounds below are quickly becoming a distant memory. Gravity still pulls and tugs like an annoying toddler, but all that means is she pulls her limbs in a bit tighter, focuses on the power of her semblance, and-

Lets another powerful updraft hit her outstretched wings, rocketing her another hundred feet above the clouds.

The wind still bites like a dagger with a pain she's come to relish. The cold cuts directly through her thin dress shirt, leaving behind a cold numbness that'll even fade to it's own chill in time. She lost track of the extremities on her face awhile ago, and she can feel wind whistle down the icey valley between her wings that'll melt into an unpleasant dampness later. But ultimately, that all doesn't really matter. As long as she can feel the faint warmth of the sun, and edge of the horizon stays perpendicular to her flight position in the corner of her eye, she can tell which way is up.

Prism can count the number of people that has her gift on one hand. The ability to feel the sky in it's purest, rawest state; unfettered by steel and glass and the uncomfortable thrust of dust-powered rockets, or the staticky hum of antigrav. Call it vain (and she'll easily admit to herself later, it is vain), but it almost means she's supposed to push herself.

Push herself to nearly-impossible heights, where her vision starts popping with little black bubbles along the edge. Where she knows she'll lose counciousness if she pushes too much higher. Where feeling is wiped away by the wind, and every memory that leaves her tethered to the ground drops away against the endlessness around her.

Where she can flare her wings straight out with one final gust of wind, tilt her body horizontal to the sky, and enjoy a millisecond of sunshine before flipping over into precious, adrenal-fueled freefall.

Her smile's lost against the wind in her face.

The Vytal Tournament is essentially the most-watched televised event in all of Remnant, and can probably be pretty accurately compared to the Olympics in our world. You have young hunters-in-training competing against each other in insane, arena-destroying fights and displaying awesome powers as they try to prove they're the most promising trainee of their generation. The tourney fighters are undoubtedly going to amass supporters, and more importantly- fanbases-

So how do your characters react?

From the Remnant equivalent of twitter accounts dedicated to a specific part of their body to the youngin's that look at them with wide-eyes in the streets, how do your characters react to this fame? What do you think is going to be their likeliest (or unlikeliest) addition of groups to their fanbases? And most importantly, how do they choose to interact with them all?

AMA Section / What types of symbolism do your characters have?
« on: April 09, 2019, 11:29:21 AM »
Symbolism plays an important role in the RWBY-verse, where so many characters are based off of colors, story book characters, and when a person's literal superpower is a symbolic representation of their personality. Where characters literally wear symbols that are supposed to represent themselves as a whole.

But beyond the very obviouos, what sort of running themes do you have for your characters? Does it reflect them as a whole, or is it part of a much larger thematic destiny for gour OCs? Rant away - large responses are encouraged!

Interesting character tidbit inspired by the concept of losing limbs: are you characters right-handed or left-handed? How does it influence their fighting style? Can y’all tell I’m a bit bored?

It’s a nice day.

Chantou likes taking advantage of nice days. Park somewhere a ways away from the school in the sun so she can smoke without getting bothered, prop her feet up on the dashboard of her Babygirl, and lean back and let the sunshine soak in.

Even if enjoying the sunshine meant sneaking out of her midday study hall to drive into some far-off corner of campus, that was frankly mostly dirt road and open field. But hey, she’d managed to finish all her work early for once - she didn’t want that annoying nagging voice in the back of her head to disrupt her nice weekend - so she really hadn’t needed to stick around.

So she can just lean back, and enjoy her afternoon.

Focus.

Close your eyes. Listen for your heartbeat. Feel it’s tangible pulse, the steady ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum that brings you life. Feel blood in your veins, pulsing through you, steady and unending - feel the depth of your soul.

Focus on that life inside you. The soul you’ve carried since you’ve been brought into this world, the weight that it carries and the power it brings you - to create winds, summon storms, to fly well beyond what any human can accomplish.

Your weapon is only another limb. Allow your aura to creep up the length of your glaive, bringing a new, ivory shimmer to the already-shining blade. Take a breath, wait one-two-three beats-

Swipe.

The massive shining crescent that flies across the training arena is accompanied by a heavy dose of wind, slicing cleanly through all three Ursa targets at the other side. The distinct clink of her blade against the floor is enough to bring Prism Skylark out of her trance-like state, blinking as the white mist curling away from her body slowly begins to dissipate. It takes her another moment to focus, but the sight of the clean-cut targets is enough to bring a small smirk to her face - it’s good to know she can create crescents of that size, in case she needs to hit multiple enemies at once. Other than overextending the reach of her weapon and making it bounce off against the floor, she was fine - she just needs to be a bit more aware of the length of her glaive and its interaction with the world around her.

Nodding to herself in quite self-approval of the next steps to take, Prism stands back up to her full height, and turns to the nearby console in order to set up the next round of targets. Practice makes perfect, after all.

The outdoor testing range at Beacon's weapons workshop was a place that told stories. From the faded pastel remains of various dust explosions and cracked asphalt, to the far concrete wall where several well-abused paper targets valiantly hung as a triumph against the wide variety of bullet marks marring their surfaces, one could tell it was well-used by students of all years. And this morning was no exception, as exhibited by quiet swears of Jima Purpora as she stood, hunched over what looked like a slab of iron with a motor attached, resting on several car jacks and half of a workbench.

The woman had been working on her most recent project for awhile now. After the Vytal Tournament and some recent sparring matches against other students, she'd been left feeling underpowered, and underleveled. Two things she knew she wasn't. The concept of not living up to her full potential was infuriating, so she'd decided it was about time for an upgrade in firepower, literally - and thus, the plans for her new chainsword were born. It'd taken some... interesting petitioning of the companies that provided her funding, alongside drafting plans for an entirely-new way of capturing Grimm, in order to get the money to build the weapon. It'd honestly been about time to replace her weapons though, too - the frequency of capture with the Grab n' Go were too low to warrant constant reuse, and after serving by her side for 4 years at Signal and then another 3 at Beacon, Jima had been reaching the edge of her capabilities with Goliath.

So thus, the plans for Requiem Alpha and Beta, alongside the compact capture discs, were created. The CCD's had been easy to draft, fast to assemble, and more importantly, much cheaper than the Grab n' Go - something Jima's correspondents were very happy to hear. Requiem had taken a bit longer to assemble, given the need to custom order parts to assemble in Beacon's weapons workshop. But weeks of late nights assembling and experimenting had finally paid off with the creation of the massive broadsword and it's custom-built dust powered engine.

So as Jima screwed back on the cover to the motor and flipped the switch on the base of the pommel, there's a muted roar as the motor comes to life. The blade of the weapon quickly gains a white glow before it lifts up off the workbench it was resting on, hovering nearly two feet over it's surface. Jima takes a step back, a massive grin on her face as she observes the result of so much of all her hard work - and lets out an incredibly unprofessional squeal of joy.

Now all that's left is a proper field test.

With a recent upgrade in firepower, Jima Purpora is looking for the opportunity to field test her weapon. This involves delving headfirst into the Emerald Forest looking for baddies with no regard to her safety, which is- well, 90% of missions hunters run anyways. She'd probably appreciate some friends along the way as well, so anybody's who interested in the opportunity to come in and beat up a large number of Grimm (alongside some very large Grimm) - well, this thread's for you!

In reality, this is mostly Moth's way of figuring out how to best write combat. Jima's going to be present, though probably be indisposed through various means throughout the majority of the fight, so it'll be up to whoever's interested to handle the Grimm. There's room for three in this makeshift hunting party.

1. Smokey Emberstone
2. Diana Farran
3. Kisha Miles
4. Tieren Augus

Apologies to anybody not chosen, but I'll hopefully be writing proper plot threads in the future, and you all will be the first to know!

Everywhere Else / Foreign Delicacies [Closed]

The best thing about about the Vytal Festival, in Chantou's opinion, is the way it makes cultures mesh together. From the hot deserts of Vacuo, the temperate climate of Vale, to her far-off homeland of Mistral, they all manage to come together in a fantastic exchange of ideals every time the Vytal festival comes around, providing combat academy students endless opportunities they might've never been allowed otherwise. In Chantou's case, it was the fact she actually got to travel internationally - it was hard enough to afford a ticket to Vale when moving, so to get to visit Atlas for the duration of the tournament, and watch matches live? That was something she could've never experienced otherwise. So despite the cold weather, or the racist locals, Chantou was determined to enjoy herself.

And there was no better place to do that then the tent city that gets set up every Vytal Festival, cooking delicacies from all four kingdoms for visitors to enjoy. Hell, if Chantou was lucky, she might even manage to find something from home.

So Chantou had swapped out her usual croptop for a chunky red sweater, guaranteed to keep her warm in the cold weather. Thankfully her cargo pants and work boots still worked - she didn't' have to change her outfit too mouch, other than throwing on a heavy leather jacket. With her eyes hidden under a pair of mirrored sunglasses, the young woman easily passed as human - allowing her to enjoy the festival without any prejudice.

Now all she needed to do was find somewhere to eat.

Beacon Academy / Cheap Beer on a Friday Afternoon [Open]
« on: July 30, 2018, 10:19:41 PM »
Even an entire continent away from home, Chantou would always find a way to resume old routines.

The orchid mantis had just finished her first week of classes, and to put it aptly, she was exhausted. It was a week-long gauntlet of academic rigor, the likes of which she hadn't faced in nearly two years. The sparring classes were fun, sure, but Aura 101 and Grimm studies had nearly melted her brain as she desperately attempted to keep up and memorize everything the teacher said. But she just had managed to squeak by until her very first Friday, and was determined to spend it relaxing - not contemplating academics, working out, or bonding with her new teammates. Relaxing.

So she'd immediately switched out of her school uniform and into her normal one, sunglasses and all, and had gone for a nice long drive into downtown Vale to pick up a 12-pack of beer. The student parking lot in Beacon was a small but nice-enough place - personal vehicles for students were rare, so she'd had her choice of parking spots, which was always a mood booster. She'd opened the trunk and had leapt up to sit inside, leaning against the wall of trunk with one leg dangling over the back. Combine that with an open can of cold beer, the chance to smoke for the first time all day, and honest to god quiet solitude, it was hard for the orchid mantis faunus to be in a better mood.

...even if she was a little people-starved, after not having a conversation all week that wasn't about academic work, but- well, she could deal with it. Being the cool loner was her thing after all. Yeah, she'd be fine.

Though she wouldn't be opposed to sharing her beer if someone asked.

In a far-off corner of Amity Colosseum's food court, a small woman sits dejectedly staring into an absolutely massive bowl of noodles. Prism Skylark can't say she's thrilled with the location of the Vytal festival this year, in all honesty - Mistral would've been fun hub of activity, Vacuo's hot sun and sprawling sands would've been awesome to explore. Hell, if it even took place in Vale, being on the home turf would've been awesome! But no, instead it had to take place in Atlas.

Atlas, where clouds covered Prism's bright-blue sky and golden sun, where there was more white and grey than any other color. Atlas, where faunus were treated more poorly than nearly anywhere else. Where Prism got glares from men and women clutching their purses as she passed by. All because she'd let the feathers around her neck grow in to give her a natural scarf. All because she'd elected to take off her coat when entering the food court, despite keeping the massive pair of green-blue wings tucked closely to her back. Prism spent another few moments staring dejectedly at her food bowl, before sighing as she reached for her chopsticks, and started to dig in.

AMA Section / What's the worst way you can describe your characters?
« on: July 21, 2018, 10:52:24 PM »
We all spend so long attempting to accurately describe our characters, spending hours describing their backstory and their personality. It's nice to generalize sometimes, or even be lazy - so what's the worst possible way you can summarize your characters?

Prism, for example, is a PTSD-stricken chicken with a hairtrigger hurricane problem. Jima's the Grimm fetishist with a thing for expensive ink drawings, and my beloved twins as overtly sexual egotistical maniac with daddy issues, and his the sexually-repressed bookish nerd of a sister, also featuring daddy issues.

Regardless, do your best - or your worst - to describe your characters.
