Beacon Academy / Re: Technique [Closed]
« on: June 08, 2021, 03:20:35 AM »
Juno Vert and Prism Skylark had had exactly two interactions. The first incident took place at a distance, where she watched him throw her teammate through a tree. The second instance had been strictly coincidence, where she'd willingly taught him one of her few precious pincer techniques - her aura blade. He'd picked it up in moments, when it'd taken her a month to master.

Wandering onto the range to practice, and watching his attack just... fizzle out? There was something concerning satisfying in the vindication that provided her.

At the same time... she could admire that. He was trying just as hard as her to improve, when most of his training had come from her amateur teaching capabilities. It'd been just one lesson before they parted ways. It couldn't hurt to... try again.

Leaning on the doorway to the training range, she calls out. "...You... doing okay there, Vert? If you stare at that target any more intensely it might burst into flames, and I'm pretty sure that's what your sword is for."

Well, this character has been waiting in approval limbo for a good while, so it might be pointless to comment - but your last time active on the board was about a week and a half ago. Aethon, if you're still around, shoot me a message and I'll do what I can to get this guy approved.

Now for the actual review bits:

Cyrus has a really strong profile, especially for a first character! There's just a couple notes to make, and most of them involve his history.

Appearance: We operate by a certain degree of real-world logic here. If you're gonna have a character that's 7 feet tall (and still growing, if he's only eighteen), that means he's gonna be suffering from some form of gigantism. Our official cutoff height for that is at 6'11" if I remember correctly - so if you knock him down an inch or two, that shouldn't be an issue. Or it can be if you want! Character flavoring is always neat.

History: This part's a quick bullet-point list of fixes to flesh out a few gaps I spotted in his history.

- If Cyrus ran away from home around age fourteen, how come his family didn't make any effort to go after him? They're all highly-skilled huntsmen who're ages older. They likely have the tracking capabilities and the resources to find him.

- How'd Cyrus fair in the streets as a fourteen year-old? Was he taken in by someone, what type of place would hire a fourteen year-old? Was it under the table? Just a sentence or to can help with that.

- How'd he convince the Irregulars to take on a fifteen year-old kid? If it's honestly just a lack of caring on the part of the band members, that's a reasonable explanation and unfortunately on-par for the music industry.

Combat: You probably read our three weakness rule, and you've hit on two out of three - the thing about his wings is that they'd be covered by aura. If you're looking for a third, he probably isn't the fastest fighter out there - the sheer power and brawn he brings would make it a struggle.

Overall, Cyrus has a lot of potential. If you're looking for someone to rp with, feel free to hit me up! I've got a angsty birdie of my own and I think their personalities could clash in a really interesting way. We've also got a discord where most of us hang out, so feel free to hop in and say hi sometime. The link is kicking around... somewhere...

"Only kinda!" Prism replies. "I lucked out - my team's fantastic, even if my initial isn't the one at the start of the name."

The faunus temporarily wobbles with the downbeat of his wings but by the third gust the wind seems to blow right past her. As she huffs off his reply, there's a sudden surge of air around the two and Prism catches it - soaring in front of him briefly, before turning around to face him midair as her wings reorient themselves. "Don't worry about it! Controlling air currents is like- literally, my semblance. You can't help the wind."

AMA Section / What types of plots would y'all like to see?

Hey y'all - it's been a hot second since I've posted on site, but I'm starting to get back into the swing of things and I want to try my hand at running a plot thread again. Is there anything that y'all would be interested in playing in particular? Let me know!

Prism's grin gets wider as he corkscrews away. Her own wings flicker once or twice in the nonexistent breeze, before they snap open without any ceremony. There's half a second of blinding iridescence as the strong sunlight hits them, before they snap - and become a near-invisible blur behind the woman's back.

She follows Glas' gentle slop as the two begin to even out over the lake below. The invisible bubble of wind surrounding them follows their descent, but the faunus is no longer literally steaming out of concentration. "Proud leader of Team Casanova here! Howsabout yourself?"

Sorry for the wait! You've got a cool character here, and I spot no immediate issues. +1 from me.

The dumbfounded look on her new companion's would normally make Prism stifle a giggle, if it weren't for the severity of the situation. It almost seems like he forgot about the ground.

...though Prism can't really blame him. That's definitely possible to do up here. She's about to open her mouth to reply before something new encompasses her view.

Wings. Massive ones, dwarfing her modest 12 foot feather appendages - already oversized on a body that doesn't even break five feet. Nearly the same color as the sky, if it weren't for the natural glow of-

Aura. It was his semblance!

Her dumbfounded stare as he readjusted in the air is replaced by a massive grin, her own wings extending to their full length to slow her to the same speed. "I never expected to meet another! Name's Prism, feeling's the same! Want to take this conversation upright?"

In agreement with Reaper here- more detail in the combat session. We still have a rule about 2-3 weaknesses, and she currently only has one. Maybe something about being a short-range fighter, and having difficulty against long-range enemies?

"You flew?" Prism asks, her tone boarding on incredulous. The statement is enough to make her double-take again, glancing up past her feet. Nothing marred the clear blue sky beyond some wispy clouds. No drop ship, no jet pack, no obvious dust enhancements - he didn't even seem to have a weapon on him!

"I'm doing fine! I'm a good judge of where the oxygen limit is by now. But listen-" she adds, shooting him a matching look of concern. "Are you going to be okay? That lake's getting close, and I'm not sure I could carry you."

Freefall is deliciously brutal. The wind's so strong that it press her wings flat to her back, her outermost feathers whipping about uselessly. When she needs to slow down it'll be a struggle to get them outstretched in time, but that really doesn't matter when she's still this high up. Her slightly outstretched arms guide her instead, dodging through wispy clouds and sending herself into spirals that bring about a bevy of giggles that disappear into the sheer white noise of the rushing sky. With the sky below and the ground above her, it fills up every nook and cranny of possible feeling and simply lets her enjoy a singular, beautiful moment and watch the uninterrupted horizon whip by-

...

The.

The interrupted horizon, actually. Rapidly filling in with an unfamiliar humanoid figure.

Dark hair. A farmer's outfit. Definitely bigger than her (even if everyone was). No apparent means of how the fuck he got here.

Grey eyes blink at him in confusion as he literally falls in alongside her. There's pure concern sprawled out across his unprotected features, and- as a quick once-over of his form confirms- absolutely nothing else. She tilts her head "up" towards her feet. There's no drop shipo roaring off into the distance. However he got here, he did it with nothing but the clothes on his back.

The stranger mouths something to her that she can't make out over the roaring wind, even with her sensitive hearing. It's worrisome that he's concerned about her- the one who very evidently has wings- when he doesn't seem to have anything on him that insures he'd survive freefall.

Prism flashes him one moment in return to the thumbs up, before stretching her arms out in front of her. Taking a deep breath of freezing air, the woman closes her eyes- before a sudden, unbidden rushing sound fills the space between them for half a second, and air goes silent.

There's no longer freezing air beating against the both of them. Prism's eyes blink open again. There's a white, wispy aura flying off of her hands and shoulders, trailing slowly behind her like a comet. The air's moving with them now.

"Nice, that worked! Uh, hi there. Where the genuine fuck did you come from?"

In Prism's opinion, there's too many things she could compare to the sky.

At her current height, her best estimate is champagne. The air is light and bubbly up this high, freshly-chilled and crisp enough to bite the lungs with every inhale. The sky is an endless bowl above her, and the academy grounds below are quickly becoming a distant memory. Gravity still pulls and tugs like an annoying toddler, but all that means is she pulls her limbs in a bit tighter, focuses on the power of her semblance, and-

Lets another powerful updraft hit her outstretched wings, rocketing her another hundred feet above the clouds.

The wind still bites like a dagger with a pain she's come to relish. The cold cuts directly through her thin dress shirt, leaving behind a cold numbness that'll even fade to it's own chill in time. She lost track of the extremities on her face awhile ago, and she can feel wind whistle down the icey valley between her wings that'll melt into an unpleasant dampness later. But ultimately, that all doesn't really matter. As long as she can feel the faint warmth of the sun, and edge of the horizon stays perpendicular to her flight position in the corner of her eye, she can tell which way is up.

Prism can count the number of people that has her gift on one hand. The ability to feel the sky in it's purest, rawest state; unfettered by steel and glass and the uncomfortable thrust of dust-powered rockets, or the staticky hum of antigrav. Call it vain (and she'll easily admit to herself later, it is vain), but it almost means she's supposed to push herself.

Push herself to nearly-impossible heights, where her vision starts popping with little black bubbles along the edge. Where she knows she'll lose counciousness if she pushes too much higher. Where feeling is wiped away by the wind, and every memory that leaves her tethered to the ground drops away against the endlessness around her.

Where she can flare her wings straight out with one final gust of wind, tilt her body horizontal to the sky, and enjoy a millisecond of sunshine before flipping over into precious, adrenal-fueled freefall.

Her smile's lost against the wind in her face.

Hey Blizzard, welcome to the board! Glas here is a pretty solid dude for your first character, but there's an issue come his semblance. He's technically got two of them with the way his wings have dual functions - acting as both shields and a super-powered flight mechanism, so you're gonna need to choose one or the other. He could have shield-like wings he can glide with and just not fly, or  fast flight-capable wings that don't act as shielding - just not both. I apologize if this necessitates changes to his backstory, considering his semblance is pretty vital to that. Feel free to hit up the characters and team questions chat on the discord if you need help tweaking it.

Furthermore, 50 mph is extremely high to be considered a "cruising" speed, so as a first year Beacon student he should have a lower speed cap. It can naturally get higher as he gets older, but it's important to consider the limitations a first-year would be contending with.

That about covers everything. I'm looking forwards to seeing what you do with him - I've got my own flighty character, so it'll be cool to see how he turns out in comparison!

"Hell yeah, you'll get this down!" She chirps, grinning up at him. "The advantage of being a sniper is that precision is a necessary specialty, so you'll have that down to a cutting edge in no time. Smashing through shit is effective, but when you can do both- well, why not? That type of broadbank attack could be good for even just knocking enemies off-kilter if you like, put a bit less aura into it too. Regardless- if I could teach Coco, I can teach you!"

She shifts again, hopping a few feet back and holding her glaive out to demonstrate again. "Getting it down to a cutting edge is... well, in my mind, is the manifestation of intent. You want to be sharp, fast, and brutal- so with your weapon as part of your body and an extension of your will, that gets... concentrated down even more. Does that make sense?" She rocks a bit on her heels, rubbing the back of her head. "This is just how I figured it out, mentally and then physically, so it may not apply, or if you've got a different take, go ahead."

Hiya there Shadow! Welcome to the forums, it's always nice to see new members on. Hopefully Reaper doesn't mind me dropping onto the feedback train, but I just have one or two things you may wanna consider before taking Ashlee to Character Creation:

In your history section, what exactly were people blackmailing Ashlee with? It sounds like she was a pretty quiet kid with a well-off family, so I'm just curious where and how people got dirt on her- unless you just mean just general bullying for her being an outcast. A brief clarification is appreciatied. Furthermore why does she still act submissive half the time when people start to push her and her brother around, when she knows she can fight back? Does she just not like fighting? Basically, just a bit of clarification is appreciated.

Also, at no point in the profile is her nickname explained. It's cool if you want it to be a secret - you could put it in a spoiler, or just message a mod directly if you really don't want it out there. But let us know!

Thanks for your patience, I look forwards to seeing Ashlee on the board!
