Airi continued to circle around Aurelia, soon positioning herself in between her opponent and her discarded weapon, using her time remnants as threats to keep Aurelia in a defensive position.  Airi waited for a moment, postponing momentarily her time remnants while watching to see what Aurelia would do.  When she saw her opponent taking a defensive position and similarly waiting to see what action she herself would take, Airi quickly leaped towards Aurelia's discarded sword and take it for her own, at least for the duration of the fight.  With her time remnants remaining in between herself and Aurelia to protect her, and with her opponent lacking any ranged options, Airi took up Aurelia's sword and inspected it briefly giving it a quick swing or two.  She remembered it could transform into a rifle.  She saw one of the weapon's two triggers and pulled one.  Nothing seemed to happen, and indeed it looked like it was missing some part to engage in the other transformation.  Airi pulled the other trigger, and nothing happened, either.  It seemed both forms required some other part to engage in the respective transformations.  That was unfortunate.  At least she had another weapon to use in conjunction with her armored gauntlet.  With this, Airi resumed circling around her opponent, taking care to keep a great distance between the two.  Airi would need to find a way to get her opponent to break her defensive position.  Still, though, she had the freedom to take her time and figure such a stratagem.

Airi’s move to collect Dusk does not surprise Aurelia in the slightest.  In fact, her action only serves to further confirm Aurelia’s hypothesis:  Airi won’t attack unless she’s sure she’ll come out on top.  Setting up a defensive posture was definitely the right move.

And since Airi doesn’t seem to want to make a move yet, Aurelia doubles down on that idea, hopping back even further away almost to the opposite side of the arena into the tree line, making sure to do so at an angle where Airi wouldn’t be able to save much time by retreating to her clone.  When she finally settles in a spot, Aurelia adopts a familiar posture, and a soft, faint, gold glow once again begins to emit from the ground beneath her.  With the increased distance and the cover of trees between them, the only way Airi would be to stop the summoning in time is if she dives straight into the forest after her.

Of course, there was one other reason Aurelia retreated into the woods.  Aurelia had to take one more risk in this play, but she wants to contest a certain claim Airi had made earlier in the match.  ”’No one,’ huh?”

By now, Airi was at the ice dust fields.  As Aurelia blended into the forests, but failed to reappear, Airi had suspicions as to what her opponent was up to.  She had to flush her out before she could use her semblance.  As a result, Airi used some fire and kinetic dust from her gauntlet.  In particular, she combined the two, creating and launched the resulting mixture at the forest.  Fireballs rained onto the trees, igniting them and torching the treeline.  Airi then continued her bombardment by adding ice dust into the mix causing the fireballs to become firebombs.  Suddenly, the wooded cover that made the forest such favorably defensive terrain was turned into a deadly storm of shrapnel and splinters.  In the meantime, she took several of the ice dust crystals, using them to refill her own reserves of ice dust and stashing several more on her belt.  They could come in handy, especially if her tactic to force Aurelia out failed.  Airi then stepped forth from the ice dust fields, continued to pace slowly, and watched as the forest on the other side of the arena went up in flames.

It’s been a few seconds since Aurelia began channeling her semblance.  If she’s timed this correctly, Airi should be entering the forest now.  The sound of approaching footsteps should make itself apparent any moment now.

But footsteps never come.  Opening her eyes for a moment to scan the area, Aurelia’s just in time to witness a fireball crash into a nearby tree.  The leaves begin to catch fire and start to spread, but, for now, the flame is small, localized, and not a threat.  ”Even now, you still refuse to fight me?” she mutters as another fireball comes careening toward her.  Even if Airi used every ounce of fire dust she had, it would take several minutes at best for a fire to be enough of a threat to smoke Aurelia out.  She only plans to be here for less than twenty seconds.  Airi’s unwillingness to fight will be her—

Aurelia’s startled from her thoughts as the second fireball explodes and sends shrapnel scattering about.  She maintains concentration on Noble Steed’s summoning, but her thoughts grow slightly more worried.  She needs to find a way to defend against that attack, at least temporarily.  She needs to stay above 25% aura for a few more seconds, otherwise she will be unable to activate her semblance.  She also cannot move during the channel, otherwise it will be interrupted and she’ll have to start over.  That means she’ll have to block it somehow.

Since she can’t move, the only option is to use an aura shield.  She’s already forced to concentrate on her aura, so a little multi-tasking shouldn’t pose too much of a problem.  Still, it’s not like she can project a barrier that completely surrounds her, or even project one continuously—even for the short amount of time left on the summoning.  She’ll have to project individual shields semi-randomly to block the shrapnel effect as the fire/ice grenade explodes.  It’ll almost certainly be impossible to block all of the effect.  Still, there are enough factors in her favor that give her hope of blocking anything at all.

First, the shrapnel will come from one direction at a time, even if they’re fired in rapid succession.  As long as she pays attention, she can narrow down where the attack will come from and focus on one side at a time.  Secondly, Aurelia only plans to block vital areas.  If she tries to defend too much, she’ll risk either losing concentration or whiffing her blocks entirely.   Finally, there’s a chance Noble Steed will arrive in time to block damage.  While she hates to let her mount take free hits, Aurelia will probably need to rely on unconventional tactics to win at this point.

Settling on her gameplan, Aurelia gazes out through the woods to the rest of the arena.  Just because Airi can’t see her doesn’t mean it works visa versa.  Still, between the natural foliage and the slowly increasing flames, it’s difficult to make out what her opponent’s doing.  Which is why it’s nice Airi has so graciously provided no less than four instant replays for her every action.  As she watches four heads bob down and up on the ice dust side of the field, it’s fairly easy to conclude Airi picked up some of the crystals for her own use.  As for what that use is, Aurelia has a few guesses, but right now she needs to focus on these last few seconds.

Airi had walked forth from the ice fields, but she remained outside the forest.  She had no need to enter into an area where she could not see her opponent clearly.  Though by no means a conflagration, the smoldering embers would mean that Aurelia couldn't take refuge in the foliage forever.  As such, Airi walked back away from the forest and back towards the ice dust fields, letting her time remnants mimic her movements.  In her head, Airi thought of what she would do when Aurelia inevitably did come forth from the forested area.  With her dust reserves low, apart from ice dust, there wasn't really much to work with, but she had an idea.  She kept moving back and forth to keep her semblance time remnants away from her.

Aurelia braced herself for the inevitable onslaught, waiting for more explosions to come her way.  Yet, for the moment, no more of those incendiary grenades come.  That could mean any number of things, though, she couldn’t afford to let her guard down.  The only thing she could do in her current situation is stand stock still and continue channeling her semblance, and be prepared to deploy an aura shield in the event of the surely inevitable attack.

But no attack comes.  Despite having no real answer to the attack, save for a desperate attempt at aura manipulation, Aurelia is allowed peace to finish summoning Noble Steed.  And as the channel reaches its conclusion, the softly glowing circle beneath her erupts into a brilliant, blinding light as a loud horse whinny echoes throughout the colosseum.  Naturally, her position would be revealed, but that would no longer be an issue for the knight.

As the light subsides, anyone who could see her through the forest would see Aurelia mounted on a shining, golden steed that was currently rearing back, the pose making for a rather triumphant scene.  As the front hooves come crashing back to earth, the intricate armor the steed is adorned with shimmers as the construct jostles about.  As the beast tosses its mane, the horn on its head glimmers in the lights of the stadium.  If Aurelia looked the part of the knight in shining armor, then her semblance was the knight’s Noble Steed, a unicorn straight from fairy tales.

Aurelia, now in her true form as a cavalier, wasted no time celebrating her success.  She was sitting in a slowly burning forest and had just revealed her position.  She had finished what she needed to do, there was no longer any reason to stay here.  The unicorn, without prodding from any reigns, moved in concert with Aurelia’s will, quickly sliding into a gallop to take her out of the smoking woods.

Barely seconds later, Aurelia emerges from the tree line, allowing the crowd and her opponent to finally get a good look at what they were told of at the start of the match.  The first thing an astute eye would notice (apart from the obvious) is that Aurelia is not using her hands to control the unicorn.  Both hands are otherwise occupied with sword and shield, both of which are held in a defensive position.  Yet she seems to be in perfect control of her mount, not even the tiniest bit of concern of falling off evident in her body language.

In fact, the second thing onlookers might see is that Aurelia seems much more relaxed, natural, and confident.  That isn’t to say she’s abandoned her posture, of course.  It’s more that she seems to be more comfortable riding on a creature with four legs than she is standing on two.  If Airi thinks Noble Steed is nothing more than a big target or a waste of time, she’ll be in for a surprise.

Airi was waiting for Aurelia to finally emerge from the wooded section of the field.  Aurelia hadn't used her semblance at all in this entire bout, so Airi was sure that Aurelia was channeling it in the cover of the woods.  All of a sudden an aura horse broke out from the treeline and charged at her.  Airi did not flinch, as she was expecting something spectacular from Aurelia's semblance, though what exactly was unknown to her.  Rather, a small grin of expectation was on her face for having seen the semblance revealed at last.

Airi took up her arms to look as if her strategy was merely to hold her ground against the charge.  However, as Aurelia and her semblance crossed nearly two thirds of the distance, Airi moved to action.  Being in the ice dust fields had given her the advantage.  Taking one of the crystals she had previously collected, she activated the dust, along with a small amount of her remaining fire dust.  Immediately after the brief flash of light upon activation, a low-lying cloud of frosty mist enveloped the ring.  The mist reached up to approximately Airi's shoulders and obscured everything beneath it.  However, this was not the only thing Airi did with the dust.  Upon closer inspection, one could see that she also used the dust to create a thin layer of ice to cover the arena floor.  With this hindrance, it would be difficult to move agilely, as the ground was slippery and traction was poor.  "Let's see how that horse handles on ice," she thought to herself.  As for herself, Airi continued to stand her ground, for she was still not yet finished.

Airi clutched onto another ice dust crystal and waited for the perfect moment when Aurelia would be nearly upon her.  Given the speed of the horse, she needed not wait long, but every passing moment felt like an eternity, and it didn't help that Airi, as a time jumper, felt each one more keenly than the average person could hope to.  Eventually, she saw the moment with the perfect opening and let herself evasively fall backwards.  As she did so, Airi activated the dust crystal.  From where she just was, a cluster of long icicles erupted from the ground, piercing through the mist layer and shooting up like spears angled defensively against the charging horse and rider.  It was Airi's hope that her opponent would charge headlong into the cluster of icy spears and that the ice-covered ground would prevent Aurelia's mount from being able to react well enough to avoid them.

As Aurelia emerges from the forest, her mount quickly slows to a halt rather than continue charging at her opponent.  This might come as a shock to a few, but Aurelia had no intention of charging her opponent’s current position.

There were a number of reasons for that, but the biggest reason was that Airi was standing in a literal minefield, and one false step could leave Noble Steed crippled before Aurelia could launch an attack.  Airi had also collected a fair amount of ice dust, as well, and no doubt she had been spending time formulating a counter attack for any attempted charge attempts.

Besides which, every charge Aurelia has made on foot has been met with some form of punishment, and that pattern probably won’t change with the appearance of glorified set of legs.  She’ll need another method of attack.  Unfortunately, she doesn’t have any other method of attack.

Aurelia has no dust, and the bullets in her sheathe are worthless without Dusk.  If Aurelia had more Aura, she might’ve charged anyway, relying on sheer power to make up the difference.  However, with her Aura firmly in the yellow as it is, she would almost certainly lose the battle of attrition at this stage.

In short, Airi has the advantage in territory, weapon availability, and vitality, placing Aurelia firmly in check.  However, the cavalier still has a few tricks to play.  Right now, the biggest problem is Airi’s position in the ice dust field.  If Aurelia could find a way to force her opponent to compromise her advantage there, Noble Steed’s mobility would be able to come into play.  Unfortunately, the only thing that would motivate Airi to leave at this point is a tactically beneficial reason, if Aurelia’s gauging her opponent’s personality correctly.  That means Aurelia’s going to need to “convince” her that there’s a tactical reason to leave.

To that end, the knight does a few things.  First, she guides her semblance to Airi’s left to the far side of the middle section of the Arena before turning back around.  She then switches her sword and shield into the opposite hands and then brings up the shield to face her opponent.  Then, the unicorn slowly paces toward the opposite side.  Finally, with her setup complete, she issues a taunt, ”Well, are you going to stare at me, or are we actually going to fight for a change?”

She’s fully aware that Airi has ranged attack capabilities, but if Aurelia pulls this maneuver off correctly, she might be able to bluff Airi into thinking ranged battle is pointless.  And since Aurelia wouldn’t be willing to charge into Airi’s territory, the only option she’d have left is to enter melee.  At least, that’s the plan on paper.
