The Seven Stances of the Sword [CLOSED]
« on: June 19, 2019, 02:05:51 PM »
CLASS BRIEFING:

The objectives of this class is to improve your swordsmanship on a level beyond what Beacon's staff normally offer to students, as well as a practical test of survival. You will be ascending a mountain near the town of Sleipnir, where your teacher for this class will be waiting near the peak. This class is expected to take 3-5 days, including the ascension and teaching period itself; as such, students are required to bring with them sufficient food, water, and other necessities as the student deems fit, to be procured by themselves. If a student is for any reason unable to procure their own supplies, Beacon will provide one 50L climbing backpack with enough food to last 5 days on 3 meals per day, a 2L water bottle, cooking stove, fuel, tent, sleeping bag and mat. In addition, Beacon will provide each student with one distress beacon, to be used in case of emergency. Doing so, however, will result in an immediate end to the class and return to Beacon.

-- Sent to Camelia Sol and Wabul Paka --

As the first rays of the morning sun peeked over the looming mountain providing shade to the small town nestled at its base, the same light flashed off the hull of a Bullhead beginning its descent to the town below. Considering its remote location and distance from any major settlements, Sleipnir was fairly large and it showed. Tall wooden walls protecting the circle of houses and stores within could clearly be seen even at the Bullhead's current height, as well as a shining, crystal-clear lake situated just a minute's walk from the town walls. Even at this time, the lake's jetties were active with fishermen either returning with their catch or just pushing off for their day's work.

As the Bullhead dropped ever closer to Sleipnir's designated landing zone within its walls, the pilot thumbed a button, sending a fairly loud buzz echoing around the interior as a means to wake the two students within. For once, Beacon had spared one of their more comfortable transports in lieu of the fact the flight was an overnight one, complete with reclining seats that doubled as decent beds - for a Bullhead, at least. "We'll be landing soon," the pilot spoke into his intercom. "Make sure you've got everything with you - don't want to accidentally leave food or your tent on your trip." A few nearby heads turned toward the landing pad in curiosity as the Bullhead touched down in a blast of wind, curious to see the passengers within. As the doors opened and fresh air blasted the student's faces within, their pilot added "I'll be here for 6 days, maximum. If you're not back by then, I'll be activating your distress beacons remotely so I can go find you."

Camelia had removed all her armour, weapons and everything else not including normal clothing and was dozing off in her seat reclined to the 'that's just a bed' position. This did, however, mean that a big pile of chrolsfmon was sitting on the floor next to her, almost dwarfing the large bag besides them.

Speaking of bag, Camelia had prepared thoroughly. The backpack was filled to the brim with easily preserved foods like pemmican and water alongside a (suspendible) tent, some anti-bug spray, a bottle of sunscreen and a sleeping bag, as well as minimalist climbing equipment (just in case). The distress beacon was at the very bottom with all its possible buttons taped down. No misfires allowed!

At the buzz, Camelia more or less jolted awake. Popping upright, she hastily made her seat follow suit before getting up and putting on her coat, followed by all the layers of her armour, all the while listening to the pilot's words. When Orion was slotted on her back, she slipped the backpack onto her front - like wearing a backpack, but the wrong way around. It wasn't really that bad considering Orion's weight compensated rather well. She finished by buckling the waist strap and was ready to head out. Turning back towards their driver as the door opened, she cheerfully said "Understood, sir! Have a pleasant week!" before strolling onto the pad.

Looking around a bit, Camelia quickly determined her objective's location - Mount Sleipnir, as ominous as that sounded, was clearly visible almost right next to her - and pondered on how to go about it. Of course, she should head out right away. No point in dallying around, after all. However, how about the climb? Could the other student and herself share the burden, taking turns standing watch?

Wishing to determine the validity of such thinking, she turned back around towards the other non-pilot person present, politely waiting for their own train of thought to finish.

Toast has been doing a lot of traveling recently.  That's not a bad thing, it's quite welcome actually.  It's just a bit surprising to him, he thought he'd be spending a lot more time doing, like, book work or something after getting into Shade.  'Course, if that were the case, he'd just be wandering around anyways.  But the fact that he not only has permission to go where he pleases, but is outright being encouraged to is, well, nice.

And this time around, it's been very nice.  After making it to Beacon to rendezvous with the transport, he was surprised with how complementary the staff were for this class.  Although he had packed most of his own provisions, he couldn't help but take the upgrade in tent and sleeping arrangements; the ones he had were old and sandy.  And then there was the Bullhead itself.  The trip to Sleipnir was probably the comfiest trip he'd ever taken in his life.  Still not quite as comfy as a real bed, though...

The buzz shocked Toast awake, causing him to jerk around a bit before he regained his bearings.  Rubbing the sleep from his eyes as the pilot spoke over the intercom, he scooped up his gear and made his way off, giving a drowsy, "Thanks for the trip," as he hopped down.

On the ground, the first thing Toast did was lean back and stretch out, working out all the kinks in his lithe form.  Once he got blood flowing into his extremities again, he finally addressed his companion for the journey.  "Heya!  Looks like we're working together again--uh, what was your name?  No, wait!  Don't tell me!  Started with a 'C'...Carrie! No, Candy?"  He scratches his cheek for a minute as he racks his brain for the woman's name.  Eventually, though, he gives up with a shrug. "Eh, I'll remember eventually.  Anyways, you got everything you need?  As much as I'd like to go sightseeing, it looks like we're on the clock, so we should probably get a move on," he says, putting his arms behind his head casually and taking a relaxed pose.  He seems as carefree as ever.

Before either student could make any moves to venture off into the town or toward the mountain, they were interrupted first by the sound of boots clanging on metal, then a young man clad in light, short-sleeve waterproofs and hoisting a hefty backpack walking directly up to them. "So ya lot be the group from Beacon, then?" the man asked, his rough accent paired with a toothy grin. "Th' name's Alfyn, an' I'm ya guide up that mountain over yonder; been hired by Beacon to keep an eye on ya."

Giving the pair a cursory look-over, his gaze fell upon Camilla's body, resulting in a raised eyebrow and a guffaw. "Y'all Beacon students nuts sometimes. Think climbin' a mountain's th' same as ya mornin' strolls around a track? That armor's only goin' to weigh ya down where we're goin', lass, and that coat? Take a page outta his book," he pointed at Toast's attire, "Red long-sleeved vest ain't gon' be my first pick, but least sleeves can be rolled up. White pants might git dirty but th' heat's more bearabl' that way. Def' not like them black trousers of yours. Best hope ya got a heat tolerance."

"Anyway," Alfyn continued, spinning around to face the mountain, "If ya be wantin' anythin' to add to them rucksacks o' yours, this 'ere town o' Sleipnir's ya last pit stop. 'Onestly, I'd 'ppreciate if ya did - helps th' economy 'ere." The last bit was said like a sheepish child asking his parents for money to buy candy. "There be plenty o' regular necessities 'ere, but chances are if ya dun 'ave somethin' on ya here trip, I've got it." If either student cared enough to give Alfyn's backpack another look, they would realise it was nearly double the size of their own, with plenty of pockets seemingly stuffed to the seams. "Might as well give it a look, aye? Go on, I'll wait 'ere."

Camelia smiled as Toast spoke, amused by his mild floundering. "You can call me Cammie. And about that, I was wondering how we'-" Stopping herself mid-sentence as the deafened sound of boots on metal was heard, she turned to the source.

A man, not much older than either of the students, walked up to them and informed them about his current role. Odd, since she hadn't received anything pertaining to being escorted in any way... Better to not bring it up, though, but she would keep it in mind. Speaking of keeping in mind, she was pretty sure that if she curled up, she could fit in the man's - Alfyn's - backpack with some room to spare.

The rest of his speech was a bit less pleasant for Camelia, considering it was basically one long, somewhat blunt criticism on her choice of attire. Firstly, that armour was what she fought with and she was quite used to its weight, as heavy as it might be. As long as she went slow and steady, she didn't foresee exhaustion problems. As for the coat, she'd heard that mountains can get rather cold compared to their low-altitude surroundings. Combined with the forest they were going to be walking through and the shade that implied, a coat seemed justified. After showing some slight confusion, she concluded that she did have no experience in the field of mountain climbing and therefore decided to believe the man.

As for adding to the back(front)packs... Showing a nice, warm smile, she said to Alfyn "Personally, I've come here with everything I needed already packed, so I don't feel like visiting the town at this moment. However, once we get back down, my pack will be almost completely empty and I wouldn't mind doing some shopping to stock back up!"

Toast snaps his fingers when Cammie reintroduces herself, saying, "Cammie, I knew it!"  However, before the conversation could continue, both Cammie's and Toast's attentions turned toward the sounds of approaching bootsteps.

The steps belonged to a young man who looked very prepared for a long stay in the mountains.  Between his clothes, his enormous backpack, and his accent, Toast wouldn't have been surprised if he had said he was planning on going off the grid for good.  Still, Toast couldn't help but laugh as Alfyn starts "critiquing" Cammie's choice in attire.

"Damn, you meet a girl for less than ten seconds and you're already try'na get her clothes off.  I like your style, man!" he says in between chuckles, casually resting his hands on his head.  "By the way, name's Toast, and uh, I'm actually a Shade student.  Probably explains my superior fashion sense.  Not that where I'm from matters all that much, I guess."

"As far as supplies go, I'm pretty much already set," he continues, patting his pack.  "Besides, I kinda don't have any money on me, so..."

"Shade, huh? I been ther' befor', an' tha' explains th' goggles an' bandanna, huh?" Alfyn grins, unfazed by the two student's rejections to top their equipment off. "Can't say it's th' most hospitabl' of places, but th' heat ther' makes this 'ere climb seem a casual jaunt. Ya should 'ave absolutely no problemo with this on' then, Croissant." He grins and turns to walk off the platform, waving one hand as to beckon the students to follow.

The town of Sleipnir, while fairly impressive when viewed from above, was nothing out of the ordinary on terra firma. All of the houses basically had the same color scheme and possibly layout, so nothing really stood out or would catch either student's eye. What was strange was the number of people on the streets, far more than would be expected from a village this size, let alone this far from any other major civilisation. Not only that, but the students' Aura detection would sense unlocked Auras like them. Lots of Aura users. Not at the level of a combat academy, but once again, far more than the usual number of Hunters that would be situated in remote villages.

"Ya'll in for th' long haul 'ere, so ah figure it's best to get ta know ya better. Anythin' ya wanna tell ol' Alfyn or each other, b'fore we start stabbin' ourselves in a fight all accidental? Dunno 'bout ya but ah don't feel like dyin' ta teamkill." the tour guide remarks in his strong, rough accent, seemingly oblivious of the masses of people.

Camelia cringed - thankfully, invisibly - at Toast's joke. Just, ugh. Meanwhile, the young (huge) man blissfully ignored everything both of them said apart from Toast hailing from Shade. Oh well, what're you gonna do, right?

She quickly followed Alfyn as he indicated so, keeping up pace relatively easily - not that that meant anything on level ground. As the group walked through the small town, though, she felt like it was unusually busy. There were quite the amount of people on the streets and more than once, she crossed eyes with a person that felt like they were a Huntsman. She had no idea why either of those things were occurring here, though. Faraway villages don't tend to be hubs of activity apart from when there're rare resources around and as far as she knew, the only rare resource around here was the guy at the top of the mountain...

Snapping out of her thoughts, she directed her sight to Alfyn as he spoke. What could she say, exactly? What should she say? Not reaching a conclusion fast enough to her liking, she opted to say nothing and turn towards Toast a bit, more or less waiting for either him or Alfyn to speak up.

"Oh yeah, I'm definitely already loving this weather.  Beats the desert any day.  Though, if you ask me, the heat ain't the worst part; it's the wind and the sand.  Half the process of setting up camp is dusting off all your gear.  Keep in mind, most of the stuff's covered during the day, too, so don't ask me how it gets in there," Toast says, making casual small talk with Alfyn.  He doesn't even seem to mind the change in nickname, and he keeps a casual grin on his face as the group walks out into the town.

Speaking of which, the town was definitely unusual.  Growing up traveling the desert, Toast's senses were honed to detect danger, and that included his aura's "detection" ability.  But when he started feeling the unusual presence of unlocked auras all around him, he initially wondered if his aura was on the fritz.  Yet when he actually looked at the townspeople themselves, he could easily tell that his senses weren't lying to him.  And while the town itself didn't seem all that impressive, the streets seemed to be filled with people hustling and bustling, something the desert-dwelling faunus definitely wasn't used to.  Maybe it's just a culture thing?  "Lively little town you got here," he says to Alfyn, a hint of curiosity in his voice.

When Alfyn suddenly changes topic to "getting to know each other better", Toast is initially confused, but then starts putting two and two together.  "Oh, are you asking about how we fight?  Well, uh, hmm," he pauses, scratching his cheek.  And then a grin slowly spreads across his face, and he says, "I dunno if I can explain it with words, but maybe a demonstration is in order?"  And with that, he shrugs off his backpack and sets it down next to Cammie, saying, "You mind watching this for a bit?" then begins cracking his neck and doing a quick bit of stretching, while simultaneously checking his surroundings.

After his brief warm-up, Toast grins and says, "Don't blink now, wouldn't want you to miss any of the show!"  He then slowly leans forward, almost to the point that it looks like he's about to straight up fall on his face, then--

*BANG!*

A gunshot rings out, and Toast is blasted forward at a sprinter's pace, two pistols in his hands, and starts barreling to a nearby wall.  And just when it looks like he's about to crash into it, a blade springs out from one of the pistols, and Toast plants it into the ground, redirecting his momentum and allowing him to instead sprint straight up the wall.  Right as he's about to crest the top, he jumps off in a daring leap across the street, soaring above his two companions.  His eyes look towards the top of the house on the other side, but there's no way his momentum is enough to carry him all the way over.  But just when it looks like he's about to come crashing down, another shot rings out from his pistol, and the acrobat is once again flung forward with added momentum.  The boost is not only enough to reach the next house, but to even reach the roof.  And yet, without his feet ever touching the shingles, he extends his arm and hooks it around the weather vane, redirecting his trajectory once again back towards the street.

However, there's no way he has enough momentum, even if he boosts himself with his pistols again, that he'd make it back to the other house.  But Toast has no intention of ending his performance at this stage.  Once again, a shot rings out from the Butter Knives, this time aimed straight down.  In response, his body lurches upward, and Toast uses the extra force to do a spin in the air.  Then another shot comes, sending him even higher and letting him do a flip.  And then another shot comes out, sending him further into the air while he does an up-side down vertical spin.  And then one more shot, sending him even higher into the sky as Toast does another aerial trick.

However, just when Cammie and Alfyn might have picked up on the pattern and timing of his shots, Toast begins to fall head-first towards the ground.  If he didn't have aura, a fall from that height and that angle would definitely be a kill.  And yet, the look on Toast's face, if they could see it, was one of the utmost confidence.  He falls and falls, hurtling towards the street at a breakneck pace, but just when it looks like he's about to wipe out and crash into the earth--

*BANG! BANG!*

Two shots erupt from the pistols, stopping the high-flying faunus in mid-air and giving him just enough time to pull off one more aerial flip.  At the end of his flip, the blades come shooting out of his pistols once again, and Toast throws them both towards the ground, where they land and embed themselves.  And, with the grace expected of a trained and practiced acrobat, Toast lands gently on to the hilts of his swords and finishes his demonstration with a bow.  Talk about a show-off.

The people around Alfyn and the Beacon students immediately scatter as the acrobat begins hurtling over the top of their heads like a rubber bouncy ball, with some of them instinctively half-drawing weapons at the shots confirming Camelia's suspicions that the crowd was made up of more than a few Hunters. As Toast bounced all over the place, his shots drew the attention of more and more spectators, many of which were cheering and clapping at the sudden performance. Despite the audience and noise, Toast's attention doesn't falter, and he lands gracefully on the floor to loud applause from the now fairly large crowd. Some even toss coins his way, clearly pleased with his performance.

Over the din of hands clapping, Alfyn's laugh booms loudly over the noise. "Hafta' admit that ain't wha' ah expected when ah told ya to 'tell me what ya can do', but as the sayin' goes it's better ta speak wit' actions over words, ey?" The tour guide chuckles, resuming his path forward as the crowd parts to let the group past. "Next time ya wanna pull a stunt of that caliber, gimme a heads-up. Dun think firin' pistols into a crowd's gonna go as well each time ya do it.". Saying that loud enough that other people could hear them, Alfyn glanced around apologetically as if saying a silent "sorry" for his charge's behaviour.

"Anyway, after that showstopper from Baguette 'ere, figure I can't be too surprised at much else. Ya got anythin' ya wanna show us, miss, or ya the silent type a' gal?"

Camelia frowned a bit when Toast talked about 'missing the show', before outright facepalming when he started firing his gun. Of course, she soon started looking through her fingers. She was partly impressed by the extent of his acrobatic abilities, but also partly mortified by the sheer amount of Hunters she glanced from the weapons being drawn. For crying out loud. After he finished utterly showing off, she gingerly walked back a step, allowing him to pick up his bag. She also listened as Alfyn berated him for firing his weapon in a crowded, Hunter-riddled city.

When Alfyn suggested she demonstrate her abilities, a sly grin crossed her face before she answered. "Well, I don't think I could show everything, namely due to the environment's nature, but let's." She took off her rucksack and depositing it at Toast's feet. "But this time, you're watching my stuff."

After stepping back a bit, she started by grabbing Orion and lifting it from its slot, then putting it on her arm. "I'm what you could coin a shieldmaiden more often than not, usually to serve as a form of tank for those with me. This shield, however - " she switched it to its secondary form " - can fire off a small variety of Dust mixes. Apart from that, it's built like a tank.

Moving on,
" she continued as she reset the shield and stored it on her back, "Are the actual weapons." She unsheathed both halves of Unity. "I usually either use shield and sword or two swords at once, although I can also wield..." She pressed the two halves side-by-side and their pieces slowly clicked together, forming a rather large sword. "...a big sword..." She let the halves separate again and put them end-to-end, the handle pommels touching. The swords clicked together and turned into a double-bladed sword. Spinning it a bit for effect, she finished with "...or a fancy sword." Finally, she separated the halves again and sheathed them on here back.

"Apart from that, my semblance allows me to manipulate gravity. It has a few different applications, but it allows me to do this." Camelia crouched to the ground, hands on the floor, as if she was getting ready to jump as high as possible. A purple glow surrounded her and not half a second later, as it darkened noticeably, she jumped and floated up.

And up.

And up.

In fact, she let herself float right up to the level of the mountain's summit, then let go briefly to start going back down before reactivating her semblance to stop accelerating. A decent while later, she softly landed back in the spot she'd jumped from, a wide grin gracing her features.

With a self-satisfied smirk at the sounds of applause, Toast back-flips off of his swords to the ground and gives one final bow before picking up and holstering his weapons.  He picks up a few of the coins tossed his way, chuckling at Alfyn's comment.  "Aw, come on!  You make it sound like that's the first time I've pulled a stunt like that!  You don't have to worry, I wasn't going to hit nobody," he says, nonchalantly dismissing Alfyn's cautions.  "Besides, it looks like most of the people 'round here enjoyed the show!"

When he went to pick up his pack from Cammie, he was somewhat surprised when she dropped hers at his feet, though he only responds to her request with, "Sure thing!"  Her grin seems confident, so Toast casually watches, wondering how she's planning on topping his performance just now.  What follows is a tech-demo of Cammie's weapons, and Toast let's out a low whistle at all the different forms and capabilities.  They're a lot fancier than Toast's weapons, which are about as milquetoast as a huntsman's weapons can get.

However, when Cammie mentions her semblance, Toast cocks his head and raises an eyebrow as he says, "Wait, what?"  Does that mean she can--and before Toast can even finish the question in his head, Cammie starts floating up, as if being pulled by a wire.  As she continues floating further and further away, Toast mutters under his breath, "That's cheating."  Toast raises nary a concern when Cammie reaches her peak and starts plummeting back to the ground.  And, just as he expected, Cammie reactivated her power to slow her acceleration and landed gently back onto solid ground.

After a beat, Toast offers his counterpart a smirk before tossing her bag over and saying, "My way's cooler."  He then puts his hands on his head and starts casually strolling off, following after Alfyn.
