At the mountains Summit
« on: January 03, 2019, 05:20:33 AM »
As the team flies to their destination a briefing plays through their scrolls. It is read by reasonably well known Mistrali Huntsman, Sam Copper, who has more or less been given charge over the extended operation to find the Dustsmith. Sam has been trailing the Dustsmith for years now and has a considerable well of experience for the matter. He stays on the line for any questions.

++++++++++++’Over the past three days four Faunus members of the Falcon Haven community have died under mysterious circumstances. Falcon Haven, like many dust mines, has a long negative history in regards to Human-Faunus relations and as such in a of impartiality the towns ruling council has asked for Hunters to help them deal with the situation. With no full Hunters available as they are busy chasing the Dustsmith of securing towns against more immediate threats. There is a fear that even if the attacks are not race related, which they do appear to be, the White Fang, who are becoming more and more active in the region since the Dustsmith’s arrival, might use this situation to rally more to their banner. As such it is of critical import that this situation is resolved as quickly as possible, Falcon Haven is simply too critical a base to let it fall into disarray when it is needed most.

The dangers facing you are likely to be considerable. The despair these murders has caused as well as the bad memories they cause to resurface has attracted a great number of Grimm to the mountain. As it stands few if any land-based Grimm have made a serious attempt to gain entry to Falcon Haven but it’s aerial guns have been firing two days straight to keep the Nevermores, Griffins and Lancers at bay. This is why you won’t be able to land in Falcon Haven itself and must make your way up through the mining shafts. The wildlife isn’t going to be a threat but there is always the possibility of freeholders taking advantage of some of the mostly tapped veins far from the repercussions of Falcon Haven. And past all this is the possible murderer, to make their attacks now just as the Dustsmith is handing out weapons seems too much to be a coincidence so even if they aren’t trained fighters they shouldn’t be approached lightly. If they exist that is. The medical staff and policing force of Falcon Haven should serve as powerful allies regardless and they can shore up any investigative flaws you have.’+++++++++++++

The Bullhead had been flying close to the ground for the last ten minutes as she made her final approach to Falcon Haven. It was a bumpy ride as the pilot had to navigate the rocky outcrops and temperate forests of their environment, Atlesian by her uniform but she didn’t look like any specialist the collected Huntsmen-and-Huntresses-in-Training had seen before and she didn’t offer a name. The reason for this extra danger was clear to anyone looking out the windows, a black shapeless swarm hang heavy around Falcon Haven, Nevermores but too far away to see in any detail,  and the wreckages of airships all around them who had flow too high into the Grimm flock.

Regardless the team made good time and quickly reached the mining shaft they were entering from, around fifty meters above the ground and the Bullhead hovered close enough to make it an easy jump. Up ahead was mostly darkness and a steep climb, miners hadn’t gone this low since the airbase had been constructed which meant the lights although still in place had most of their wiring damage by the mountains various native inhabitants. The flickering lights would probably end up being more of a nuisance than benefit as it stopped peoples eyes adjusting to the dark.

Toast had spent the majority of the trip lounging about the bullhead seemingly without any cares in the world.  In fact, he seemed to be enjoying the bumpy ride as the bullhead tossed and turned to navigate through its environment.

When Sam came on to give the briefing for the mission, the young man nonchalantly listened.  The mission seemed simple enough.  ”So, basically, fight our way up the mountain into the town, then collect jizz samples until we find the guy that’s been killing people,” he summarized succinctly.  He didn’t really have any questions, at least not any that Sam could answer better than the people in the city, so the young faunus simply leaned back, relaxed and enjoyed the rest of his bumpy flight.

When the bullhead arrived at the mining shaft, Toast leapt through the door almost as soon as it opened, performing an acrobatic flip before landing into the cave.  He took quick stock of his surroundings, giving the area a careful scan, but the flickering light made it hard for his eyes to adjust to the darkness quickly.  In any case, he didn’t spy any immediate threat, so he casually leaned against the cave wall as the rest of his team joined him.

Revya listened to the briefing quietly and gave a chuckle at the response from Toast. He had put Ladybug in the bullhead and once the doors opened to let the group out Revya was already on the bike with helmet on.
The instant the doors opened Revya gunned it and flew from the bullhead hitting the ground and skidding slightly spraying rocks around. after landing Revya dismounted and walked the bike towards the cave.
"Glad I brought ladybug, I think her headlights will come in handy." With that comment Revya turned on Ladybug's headlights to try and illuminate the cave in a more reliable manner.

Dawn stood by one of the Bullhead's windows, watching as they passed through the craggy environment. Only at the sound of her scroll did she averted her gaze from the window to look at the holographic screen and listen to Sam's briefing.
She nodded silently as he finished and immediately turned back to the window, having no questions in desperate need of an answer.

When the Bullhead arrived at the mining shaft, Dawn grabbed her skateboard, which was leaning against the wall next to her, tucked it under her arm and then jumped nimbly into the cave. The flickering lights made it hard to get a clearer picture of their surroundings, but nevertheless, she was determined and ready to go "Well then, let's get started guys."

Camelia didn't really mind the rough ride. She'd done far worse to herself when she was starting out with her semblance. Nothing like accidentally smashing your head into an amphitheater's ceiling to get you going. Apart from that, she keenly listened to the briefing given (at a distance) by none other than Sam Cooper, who'd she heard of before. She didn't hear of much unless they had some reputation, too, so that spoke lengths as to how known they were around Hunting circles.

The briefing was clear and concise and Camelia found she had nothing to want for in terms of additional information. She was, however, thoroughly disturbed by Toast's comment, sat opposite and to the side of herself. Collect... jizz samples? What? "...What?" Alas, before she could either figure out what the hell that meant or get an answer, the Bullhead arrived at its destination.

Being armoured as she was (and seeing as how someone'd brought their vehicle along), Camelia decided to bring up the rear. After everyone else was off, she jumped onto the roc below herself, landing with a loud thud accompanied by the rock breaking a bit under her equipment's weight. She immediately took hold of one half of Unity and left the other sheathed, whilst Orion remained on her back for the moment. She'd probably take a hold of it after a bit, depending on how fast they progressed through the mine.

...Jizz samples?

Although the pilot chuckled slightly Sam’s reaction mirrored much of Camelia’s in bewildered annoyance although the experienced huntsman managed to hide it reasonably well. ’There will likely be a little more to it than that Wabul but hopefully for all our sakes I hope the end result is the same. We need Falcon Haven secure if we are going to have a solid base here. But if there aren’t any questions I’ll leave you all to it, I have other debriefs that I have run so I wish you all the best of luck.’ Sam Copper remarked before terminating their call. The bullhead quickly flew away, a little higher than before with it’s lighter load making the ride look a lot smoother.

Illuminated by Ladybug’s headlights it was clear that despite these shafts hadn’t been in use for a while and the lights were playing up they were well made. Cut almost completely square with regular wooden supports showing little or no signs of rot or decay. Slowly going further and further up the shaft curved around itself until it would eventually reach Falcon Haven. It would make dragging Ladybug around difficult unless Revya rode it which would cause problems with noise and additional flammable materials.

The group started to find a fair few offshoots to different parts of the mining system. All of them carved out in the same high quality in craftsmanship and regular breaks to ensure the stability of the entire system. All of them except for one. Harshly carved out with a drill made this tunnel more circular than square and there was a complete absence of any wooden supports. More worryingly there was the sound of mining and heavy machinery coming from further down the tunnel.

If the impromptu group of hunters in training decides to check out this noise it wouldn’t take long before they could hear voices intermingled with all the sounds of industry. Luckily with all the excess noise going around, it would only require a moderate amount of stealth to sneak up on them and get within a reasonable distance of the group. There looked like there were two miners working heavy machinery and other four loading up mining carts The workers were all singing a song and working in time to the beat of the words. It was well timed which suggested this being a regular activity. If the group decided that they had to at least check in with Falcon Watch and begin their mission as soon as possible before diverting their attention there was an elevator a fair distance along the main mining shaft. It would bring the group to Falcon Watch quickly although from the look of it the noise could easily be heard over the mining machines.

It took Toast a bit to realize Sam was addressing him when he made his comment, but by the time the faunus realized the huntsman was using his real name, he was already in the mine.  Oh well.

In the meantime, Toast took stock of the surroundings now that there was an adequate source of light, and the environment surprised him slightly.  Whoever built these mines knew what they were doing.  Or, at least, it looked like they knew what they were doing.  Everything looked square and uniform, which made it seem like there was a degree of architectural planning involved.  The only real sign of mine’s abandonment is the faltering lighting system.

Normally, Toast wouldn’t really think too much on any of this as the group wandered through the tunnel, but the jarring difference between what seemed to be the official, if abandoned, portion of the mine and the one off-shoot that lacked the support structure and clean-cut pathways of the rest was just too hard to miss.  Between that and the sounds of work and machinery, the cat faunus’s curiosity was piqued, and Toast started meandering down the tunnel without really waiting for the rest of the group’s opinion or comment.

He’s not being entirely lackadaisical, of course.  He is on a mission and treating it at least somewhat seriously…for him, at least.  He sticks close to the walls, using his acrobatic skill to keep light on his feet and stealthy and focusing on his aura’s natural “danger sense” to sniff out anything dangerous before it bites him in the ass.

Revya opted to deal with walking Ladybug through the cave and suffer in silence towards the back of the group. He would follow their lead.

Dawn made her way deeper down the shaft. With the help of Ladybug's light, she was able to get a good overview of the similar-looking shafts supported by the wooden scaffolding. Already as they entered the mines Dawn had pushed forward to form the top of the group and thus unofficially took the lead through the corridors. She remembered all the individual offshoots and paths they passed and made a mental note as soon as something seemed out of the ordinary.

Her jaguar ears twitched as she heard muffled noises coming from one of the shafts and she looked down the tunnel with her eyebrow slightly raised. It lacked the neatly crafted walls and the supporting wooden scaffolding that the other tunnels had. Truth be told, it awoke her interest and she was ready to investigate the noises more closely, but in the same thought, she knew of the problems that could be involved. She turned to the group. The last thing she wanted was for the group to split up or having a conflict about which way to go.

"I think we should go to Falco-Hm?" Dawn stopped and silently watched the Cat Faunus as he ran past her and down the tunnel. So much to that. She turned to the group again, "We should stay together, let's go after him." She said as she started to walk down the tunnel, but before she got too far ahead, she looked over her shoulder back to see if the others would follow her or not.

Even though she was bringing up the rear and not in a position to decide anything, Camelia couldn't help but let out an exasperated sigh at her teammates' behaviors. Not only did Toast instantly bifurcate from the main path without even glancing over his shoulder or waiting for anyone, everyone decided to follow suit. Come on, was it so hard to send a duo up the elevator to get some backup?

...Actually, wait, Camelia might be able to go up the elevator without activating it... "Actually, I'm gonna go back onto the main path and go up the elevator shaft real quick to let people know what's happening and maybe come back with reinforcements. Somebody ttake care of bringing up the gang's rear!", she said in a hushed tone before falling back as quickly and quietly as she could.

The flickering lights were annoying, but as long as she kept her ears and eyes on a swivel, she'd probably be able to intercept any movement.

As the group split up both parties slowly but steadily made their way along their respective worn, rocky paths. For the larger group including Toast, Revya and Dawn the path did get considerably more difficult, leftover clumps of rock and an uneven fall made it difficult to walk without stumbling. Revya continued shining Ladybug’s headlights down this new tunnel which did much to give the hunters-in-training an idea of where to place their feet but it also had consequences. As distracted as the six miners were the sudden appearance of a bright light shining from the darkness was more than enough to catch their attention. Their singing and mining quickly stopped as they muttered amongst themselves about what to do next.

’What’s this, didn’t hear the elevator.’

’S’Told this was a bad idea.’

’One more of your quick rich schemes going to get us all beaten up or worse.’

’Days of back-breaking labour for nothing.’

’Screw this, I’m out of here.’

One of the miners tried to back off as far as he could from the advancing light, he couldn’t get far considering they had been making this tunnel as they went but there was still nocks and crannies to hide behind. Sensing their little group buckling, the largest of the miners and probable leader smacked one of her workmates down before they could run away as well and started shouting orders. ’Jayz get in the drill….. Who goes there ….er…. We got our permits an’everything.’ She called out in a harsh voice which reverberated several times through the mining passages. The three other remaining miners seemed to at least be cowered into resistance and took up places along with there leader wielding large pickaxes and trying to look as intimidating as they could. Very large people with plenty of hard muscle folded on top of itself but small nicks could easily be seen the the harsh light of Ladybug clearly showing none had much of an aura defence.

The other group of one, Camelia had a little more of a straight forward time of it. There was still a steady increase in elevation making passage somewhat difficult but nevertheless, the huntress-in-training made her way to the elevator in short order. It was a large machine clearly designed to transport large amounts of people as well as dust and other valuable metals. And it was still in pretty good condition, there had been some wear from the years but it was still clearly in regular use meaning Falconhaven had likely sent the lift down to assist with the Hunters-in-training. As for the elevator carriage itself, it was a large incased metal box clearly reinforced against rockfall and explosions at least from the outside. On the inside, there weren’t any seating areas but roof mounting handholds as well as basic security measures like fire sprinklers, extinguishers, phones and a security camera. If Camelia still wanted to try to float up the mining shafts she could work her way through the insides of the compartment and loosen up enough of the armoured plates to slip through it would still cause some pretty excessive damage to the elevator.

If Camelia would step inside the elevator she would be welcomed over the intercom. ’Greetings Huntress, we have been expecting you for a few days now but later is better than never I suppose although I never understood why I should be content with a miniature one.’ A man’s bored voice seeped through the speakers. ’But where are my manners, My name is Dr Aaraon Cauze... Where are the rest of your team, there is supposed to be four of you right? I hope you don’t expect me to introduce myself to each of you?’ Aaraon’s voice very quickly went from bored to indignant as if he had assumed that Camelia had demanded him to do the same crazy scenario he had just made up.

The tunnel, Toast noted, was much less well-made than the rest of the shaft.  If it weren’t for his heavily honed sense of balance and the bright lights from the motorcycle behind him, he’d have probably been stumbling all over the place.  Wait, bright lights?  Did everyone decide to follow him?  Well that’s awfully flattering, but the lights kinda kill any pretense of stealth--

The singing stopped and the workers started muttering to themselves.  It seemed they noticed the the headlights heading down the tunnel, and they didn’t seem too happy about their presence.  So much for sitting back and observing.

Oh well, sometimes things don’t go according to plan.  The best performers know how to improvise.  When the apparent leader calls out, Toast casually walks forward with his hands on his head and a big smile on his face.  ”Ya know, for someone who has their ‘permits an’ everything’, you guys are awfully jumpy,” he says with a bit of a chuckle, hoping to diffuse some of the tension with a bit of humor.  He remembered Sam saying something about potential “freeholders” and that they could possibly be dangerous, so avoiding a fight’s probably the best bet.

”As for me, I was just passing through when I overheard y’all’s singing.  You know, if this, uh, “get-rich-quick scheme” doesn’t pan out, y’all would make a great barber shop quartet!” he joked, hinting that he wasn’t buying the miners’ “perfectly legitimate business”.  ”In any case, since y’all are law-abiding citizens and all, do you think y’all could help me out with something?”

Dawn rolled her eyes in silence as she heard Camelia move away from the group. What if something happens? On either side? Dawn had little faith that she had any reception down here in the shafts with her scroll, so they were completely shut off from each other. Then there was that they didn't know what to expect further down the shaft, or up in Falcon Heaven. And a split off of 3 and 1 wasn't the best either. Dawn just rolled her eyes again as she accepted the current situation and continued to follow the path deeper into the shafts.

When they finally arrived at the source of the noises, Dawn kept her distance and didn't emerge from the shadows. They noticed them because of the light, but most likely they did not know how many they were. On top of that, since she walked behind Ladybug and not in front, she didn't cast a shadow on which anyone could locate her and anyway, through her dark hair and cloth she was well adapted to the darkness behind Ladybug. Maybe not enough to disappear into the shadows, but she shouldn't be noticed at first glance. She lowered her head and took a step back, narrowing her eyes and her jaguar ears twitch as she focused on the voices. There are six of them, maybe seven if someone was hiding behind the drill. Her hand reached for her belt, which had several cylindrical canisters attached to it, and unloosed one with white contents, placing it in the handle of her still-retracted sword, Dragon's breath. Another canister, this one with a purple-blackish content, found its place in Dawn's left gauntlet. With the sword still retracted in one hand, Dawn raised her other, the one with no dust canister attached, to reveal the shotgun barrel of phoenix flame, aimed at the group of miners. Let's see who decides to move first.

After jogging uphill for a small while, Camelia finally came within sight of what was very obviously an elevator shaft. She was mildly miffed that the elevator wasn't an open basket as she expected, but at least it seemed like there was some sort of communication possible anyway. Even if her interlocutor acted in a somewhat grating way. Leashing in her swelling frustration, she dutifully listened to the man's remarks before hesitating, uncertain of the correct procedure used for communication, then finally turned towards the security camera. Straightening up into a form which almost literally dripped with confidence, she promptly answered Cauze.

"No, sir! The rest of the assigned team is exploring a shoddy-looking offshoot that bifurcated from the main tunnel. I came here to report the situation so far. If you have any questions, I will readily answer them all to the best of my abilities, otherwise I'll head back to provide additional support.""
