Smokey's still grumbling internally as he continues moving through the marketplace. He's almost at the edge of his hiding zone, but he still can't think of a way to reliably close the gap before Prism can get away. Seeing the whirlwind of fire reach completion only annoyed him even further. Sure, if he got hit with that thing, it would hurt, but why couldn't it lift him into the air? Is it really too much to ask for a lift? For crying out loud, he's surrounded by fire and he can't think of a single way to blast himself--
Wait. Blast himself. Two images crop up in his mind. The first is of a certain bird faunus getting slammed against a wall early in the morning at the shooting range. The second is of a swordsman rapidly shrinking from view just before everything goes dark. Smokey could blast himself. Matchstick definitely, positively, could be used to close the gap quickly. The question is "would it be worth it?"
And the answer is yes. Smokey's entire plan, his win condition for this fight, was to get in melee range with Prism and get a hand on her. Between his semblance, brute strength, and the power of his weapon, he could easily 100-0 her in a matter of seconds if she were pinned to the ground, even if he did have to take the time to reload.
And quite frankly, Smokey doesn't have time to think of anything better. He's near the edge now and he can barely make out the silhouettes beyond the smoke, one in particular standing out far more than the others. "Do or die, Smokey," he mutters under his breath, his voice filled with resolve. It's time to make his move.
Marking his target behind the smoke, the gunslinger uses a nearby pile a rubble to get himself a boost above the last fire wall. It's not that he's trying to avoid the damage, he could avoid it entirely just by going fast enough, and Matchstick would certainly launch him through plenty fast. But considering his opponent, he has to cut off any escape routes, and that includes the air. While mid-jump, Smokey levels his gun, but then he twists to face the exact opposite direction Prism is in. Unfortunately, Prism is not a viable target quite yet. Instead, Smokey aims towards the burning perimeter of the marketplace. Instead of resting the gun against his shoulder, Smokey places his hand behind the stock and prepares to use aura-enhanced strength. If he were aiming at anything in particular, even at point blank, with this particular setup, the target'd probably survive with only a scratch, but this volley isn't meant to do damage. Finally, at the pinnacle of his jump, Smokey squeezes the trigger.
*Ka-KA-Ko-KOOM*
Prism would hear the tell-tale report of Matchstick from one side of the marketplace, close to the ground. She might even see a thin sheen of ice through the smoke. She might also see a blur blasting out of the smoke directly for her, depending on how sharp her eyes are. Smokey rockets out of the burning Mistrali market at a pace much faster than probably anyone would have expected, including him. The instant gravity lets him, Smokey digs his feet into the ground in an attempt to put on the breaks. Leaning forwards, his hand joins the effort, and Smokey kicks up a cloud of dust as he slides backwards towards the edge of the courtyard. Looking over his shoulder, he marks his target. Tch, looks like my aim was off he thought. He had hoped that he'd collide into the faunus, but that was probably too much to ask for what is essentially a glorified 180-no-scope. Still, he'd gotten pretty damn close. As the dust settles and Smokey's skidding finally comes to a halt, the result of his efforts become clear. Smokey Emberstone has entered melee range. These next few seconds will probably decide the match.
A familiar dark-gray aura envelops and solidifies around him. Smokey's all-out assault has begun.
