Keeping her ears wide open in case she hears the Good New's trademark whistle, Prism doesn't move from where she's landed. She only moving to change the orientation of her blade, lowering the blade to the arena floor. She shifts one leg backwards so her stance is perpendicular to the marketplace on the other side of the the arena, her hands braced at the back and midpoints of the weapon. Flipping the weapon so the blade is facing towards the sky, the white steam begins to rise off her weapon as she ever-so-slowly hoists it into the sky - her muscles trembling almost imperceptibly, as if she's hoisting a great weight.

in the center of the blaze in the marketplace, Smokey would see the loose circle of wind tighten and tighten until it was barely a meter across. Corresponding to the slow elevation of Prism's blade, the whirlwind would begin to rise from the ground. It grew slowly but steadily, thriving off it's fiery surroundings - slowly growing into what could only be described as a fiery maelstrom, pushing six feet in height and continuing to rise.

Smokey wouldn't be able to see it from where he is in the center of the wild fire, but Prism's eyes have closed behind her goggles - so focused on the task at hand, the hummingbird was completely open. With such a great exertion, once that whirlwind dispersed she wouldn't be able to take off again right away, needing a few seconds to recharge. But if Smokey revealed himself, the damage this type of attack could cause just might be worth it.

It's not like Smokey knew that, anyways.

Smokey watches the wind funnel form into a tighter circle, and, while its probably an impressive feat, Smokey's very disappointed.  At the rate this "storm" was building, Smokey would be ash by the time it was strong enough to do anything close to what he wanted it to do.  Looks like he's going to have to find some other way.  Smokey turned towards the rest of the marketplace and surveyed his surroundings. And, surprisingly, this situation might still turn out in his favor.  Between Prism's hail of fire dust a few seconds earlier and the wind building around this column, fire is spreading even more rapidly than before.  At this point, it basically covered nearly all of this half of the arena.  Smokey could literally move anywhere on this half and still be fairly-well camouflaged.  He just might be able to get to Prism after all.

With his new plan finalized, Smokey keeps low but moves quickly along the perimeter of the arena, purposefully keeping his distance from the maelstrom.  Sure, there's a wall of fire in his way, but Smokey jumped through one before, he can jump through a few more.  The sounds of stalls collapsing from the combination of the fire and wind act as cover for any sound he makes, not to mention the crackling of the fire and howling wind themselves.  On top of that, thanks to Prism's attempt at "entrapping" Smokey by burning the front set of stalls, she inadvertently gave him the opportunity to get to the courtyard's edge without exposing himself  Still, he won't quite reach that point until next turn, for now only making his way away from the budding dust devil and moving forward.  As a final note, Smokey switches Matchstick into its secondary form.  He's only going to get one chance to ground Prism, so he can't afford to miss.

Aura: 44% (2% per second within proximity (5 seconds) Jumping through a couple of firewalls (10%))
Semblance:  MANUAL DEACTIVATION!  2ND OF 2 ROUNDS OF COOLDOWN
Matchstick: 7/7 ~Ice Dust Loaded
Dust: 14/14 Ice, 14/14 Fire

PASSIVE EFFECT:  PAINTED WITH FIRE
Smokey's color scheme and wardrobe blends in uniquely with his current environment.  It's nearly impossible to see him

Action:  Moving far away from Maelstrom, moving towards front of Marketplace (can breakthrough into courtyard on next turn)

As Prism’s brow furrows in concentration, she continues to push the blade of her weapon into the air with shaking muscles. The firestorm brewing in the center of the marketplace pushes past seven feet, then eight - continuing to grow almost indefinitely, until it reaches well above the roofs of what few stalls remain standing. It stabilizes just under twelve feet, a raging tornado of fire and debri from the surrounding stalls. Prism lets out a shuddery breath then, pulling herself back into a normal stance and dropping the butt of her glaive to the ground again - staring off at the raging maelstrom in the distance with a look of tired pride.

Raising her free hand into the air, she makes a beckoning gesture towards the windstorm, causing it to quickly move towards the center of the marketplace and approaching the edge - ready to be flung wherever she deemed it necessary.

Prism knows she’s a sitting duck, standing out in the open like this. Smokey’s invisible amongst the raging inferno on the other end of the arena, but given the density of the smoke at this point, and how long he’d been hiding in there, it couldn’t be much longer until he revealed himself - and positioning herself out in the open like that was the perfect bait for hunter-in-training. All that mattered now was waiting long enough for Smokey to reveal himself so she could deliver her personal raging inferno onto him - assuming she managed to dodge whatever inevitable onslaught he decided to bring with Matchstick.

But that was a matter to deal with later.

Smokey's still grumbling internally as he continues moving through the marketplace.  He's almost at the edge of his hiding zone, but he still can't think of a way to reliably close the gap before Prism can get away.  Seeing the whirlwind of fire reach completion only annoyed him even further.  Sure, if he got hit with that thing, it would hurt, but why couldn't it lift him into the air?  Is it really too much to ask for a lift?  For crying out loud, he's surrounded by fire and he can't think of a single way to blast himself--

Wait.  Blast himself.  Two images crop up in his mind.  The first is of a certain bird faunus getting slammed against a wall early in the morning at the shooting range.  The second is of a swordsman rapidly shrinking from view just before everything goes dark.  Smokey could blast himself.  Matchstick definitely, positively, could be used to close the gap quickly.  The question is "would it be worth it?"

And the answer is yes.  Smokey's entire plan, his win condition for this fight, was to get in melee range with Prism and get a hand on her.  Between his semblance, brute strength, and the power of his weapon, he could easily 100-0 her in a matter of seconds if she were pinned to the ground, even if he did have to take the time to reload.

And quite frankly, Smokey doesn't have time to think of anything better.  He's near the edge now and he can barely make out the silhouettes beyond the smoke, one in particular standing out far more than the others.  "Do or die, Smokey," he mutters under his breath, his voice filled with resolve.  It's time to make his move.

Marking his target behind the smoke, the gunslinger uses a nearby pile a rubble to get himself a boost above the last fire wall.   It's not that he's trying to avoid the damage, he could avoid it entirely just by going fast enough, and Matchstick would certainly launch him through plenty fast.  But considering his opponent, he has to cut off any escape routes, and that includes the air. While mid-jump, Smokey levels his gun, but then he twists to face the exact opposite direction Prism is in.  Unfortunately, Prism is not a viable target quite yet.  Instead, Smokey aims towards the burning perimeter of the marketplace.  Instead of resting the gun against his shoulder, Smokey places his hand behind the stock and prepares to use aura-enhanced strength.  If he were aiming at anything in particular, even at point blank, with this particular setup, the target'd probably survive with only a scratch, but this volley isn't meant to do damage.  Finally, at the pinnacle of his jump, Smokey squeezes the trigger.

*Ka-KA-Ko-KOOM*

Prism would hear the tell-tale report of Matchstick from one side of the marketplace, close to the ground.  She might even see a thin sheen of ice through the smoke.  She might also see a blur blasting out of the smoke directly for her, depending on how sharp her eyes are.  Smokey rockets out of the burning Mistrali market at a pace much faster than probably anyone would have expected, including him.  The instant gravity lets him, Smokey digs his feet into the ground in an attempt to put on the breaks.  Leaning forwards, his hand joins the effort, and Smokey kicks up a cloud of dust as he slides backwards towards the edge of the courtyard.  Looking over his shoulder, he marks his target.  Tch, looks like my aim was off he thought.  He had hoped that he'd collide into the faunus, but that was probably too much to ask for what is essentially a glorified 180-no-scope.  Still, he'd gotten pretty damn close.  As the dust settles and Smokey's skidding finally comes to a halt, the result of his efforts become clear.  Smokey Emberstone has entered melee range.  These next few seconds will probably decide the match.

A familiar dark-gray aura envelops and solidifies around him.  Smokey's all-out assault has begun.

Aura: 31% (2% per second within proximity (3 seconds) Launching himself with Matchstick without Immovable Object (7%[NOTE: Prepared for blastback, reduced damage]))
Semblance:  ACTIVATED! 1ST OF 6 ROUNDS
Matchstick: 0/7 ~Ice Dust Loaded
Dust: 7/14 Ice, 14/14 Fire

Action:  Blasting himself using Matchstick to close the gap between he and Prism.  Spending rest of turn recovering, preparing for a grab next turn.

What the ever-loving fuck-

Prism jerks as her head in the direction of Matchstick’s unmistakable sound, catching sight of a Smokey-shaped blur flying out of the remains of the marketplace. It takes her brain a moment to catch up to what he’s done - used Matchstick’s stupidly-strong knockback to propel him across the entire fucking arena - but in those few seconds, she’s already moving.

The thing about being a long-distance sniper is that you generally encounter problems when it comes to melee-range fighting. In Prism’s case, that literally couldn’t be more true, as small and slight as she was. Up against someone like Smokey, who won his last match by pinning his enemy and to the ground and pounding her head into the pavement until she was nearly unconscious.

That’s why she has absolutely no shame in running away.

In the short window of time she had to act as Smokey skidded to a stop, Prism’s off and running, practically booking it alongside the perimeter of the arena. Bracing herself in a brief crouch, the hand holding her glaive fires off a single shot to propel her into the air. Her wings buzz to life, and using the momentum of her glaive, she propels herself across the arena in a lengthened leap-hop - at least, effectively out of melee range, but not out of Matchstick’s range.

At the same moment the flighty sniper takes off, the bubble of wind that was keeping the smoke from the fire in a low range disappears - letting the condensed haze drift freely and fill every inch of the arena on the remaining breeze, before starting to rise into the air. That wouldn’t be the least of Smokey’s biggest worries however, as the fiery maelstrom on the border of the Mistrali Marketplace would jerk a couple times, before it suddenly launches across the arena as if it’s been propelled by a slingshot. The firestorm jerks as it flies across the arena, tilted at a dangerous angle as jets of flame escape and scald the air around it - following the path Smokey flew, and aimed directly at the man still recovering from his impromptu launch.

(GG)

Smokey was very much annoyed that Prism tore off in a hurry.  He'd hoped she would've tried to take a swing at him while he was still recovering and give him the opportunity to take her weapon away at the very least.  Unfortunately, she makes the smart move and leaves Smokey in the literal dust.  If he had ammo left in his gun, he might have been able to do something about it, but considering how he got here in the first place, he's SOL in that regard.  He starts to tear off after her, but his attention is diverted by something else emerging from the other side of the arena.

Prism's firestorm was speeding towards him, much faster than he had anticipated.  He needed to act fast if he wanted to stay in this fight long enough to actually do anything.  He's not going to be fast enough to dodge it outright, so he needs to find a way to disperse it before it reaches him, like an explosion.  Fortunately for him, he is very, very capable of making explosions.  Or at least, he has the materials on hand.  He reaches back into the pouch labelled "Articles" and grabs hold of one of the bullets.  And as he begins to draw it out, he--

He hesitates.  Not he because he's scared, not out of fear.  He hesitates because he wonders if it would be worth it.  Quite frankly, his aura's low enough that one good hit would knock him below the cutoff threshold.  The Article explosions would almost certainly disperse the whirlwind, but the blow back might still take him out of the fight.  Even if it didn't take him all the way out, he'd still most likely be taken out afterwards by a good sneeze.  Considering the price of the ammunition he's holding, that's a lot of investment for no return.  Besides, Smokey shouldn't be using the Good News or its ammo as a crutch.  That's just asking for bad things to happen down the road.

With a sigh, Smokey releases his grasp on the dust-filled casing and instead reaches into his other ammo pocket, pulling out a single shell.  With aura-enhanced strength, he chucks it at Prism as hard as he can.  It's not going to change anything, he's simply throwing it out of spite and to deny Prism the perfect match.  Is it petty?  Maybe, but he's about to get his just desserts in 3....2.....1

The firestorm collides into him, and, to avoid getting into the nitty-gritty details, it hurt.  Fire and smoke completely obscure the boy, and for a few seconds, neither hide nor hair are seen of him.   Not even a peep.  It's only after the smoke clears that the crowd can see the results of Prism's attack.

For whatever reason, be it Divine Providence or sheer spite, Smokey's still standing.  His face and coat are blackened, and the fringes of his clothes are slightly singed.  However, a few spots on him seem clean as whistle, most notably the boxy contraption on his back which is clean as a whistle.  Matchstick, too, in spite of diving through fire and back, is relatively undamaged.  And finally, the pouch labelled Articles is spotless.  It seems Smokey used the last of his aura defenses to ensure his equipment came out undamaged.  Considering what might have happened had all the Articles ignited, that was probably the best call.

Without a word, Matchstick reverts back into revolver-form and is quickly holstered.  Then, Smokey turns around with a quick, "Good match," and walks out of the arena.  He seems physically fine, at least.

“Ghack!”

Prism feels something collide with the back of her head, making her wobble in the air before coming to an unsteady landing. Hopping on one foot as she regains her balance, she shoots a glance at the projectile that hit her - wait, is that a shotgun shell?

She spins on one foot to fix her sights on Smokey, preparing to launch an aura crescent at her opponent - just in time to watch him get bowled over by the firestorm. The buzzer sounds out over the arena, making her glance towards the board. Smokey’s aura has become completely depleted, while hers was still in the green at 95% that- that means-

Her laugh is victorious, as she spins on one foot, her grin growing wide. Prism Skylark’s going to the semifinals, ladies and gentlemen! “You too, Smokey! Thanks for the great match!”
