”Hello all, and welcome back to the forty-first bi-annual Vytal Festival tournament! Today we have the final match of the 3rd year 2v2 bracket, which we’ve been looking forward to more than any other match in the tournament!” The excitement in Prim’s voice was clear, although she definitely didn’t consider what Hunter’s favorite match may be when she said that. ”We’ve had a lot of Beacon matchups lately, and maybe a few others, but this bracket has shown us the absolute power, style, and efficiency of students from Atlas! First up, we have Avery LeBlanc. While I may not particularly like any of the LeBlanc kids, at least Avery isn’t annoying. In fact, he seems quite disciplined, much like his fighting style. He may not be an offensive fighter, but he can certainly take you ‘down’ in more ways than one!” As Prim continued, a roar of applause came from the crowd. For once, more Atlesian flags could be seen than Beacon ones. But that would surely even out after the Beacon students were introduced. ”Moving on, we have Taylor Stone, the other half of this duo! This exemplary young lady has a knack for getting information on the battlefield. With her drone and scouting crystals, she’s sure to have any information that her team needs! But that certainly doesn’t mean she’s lacking as a fighter! You’ll never seem to know what’s coming next in a duel with her!” As she finished her introductions, Prim gave an approving smile and tapped on Hunter’s shoulder to make sure he wasn’t sleeping through the highlight of her day.

Hunter was pouting. Prim took the one match he was excited for in this bracket! Being a man with a somewhat reasonable amount of dignity, he will not whine or complain about this. Sighing, Hunter looks to other side of the field where the Beacon students will begin. ”In my opinion, the other LeBlanc siblings are far superior, but whatever. Coming from Beacon, we got Vermilion Desdemona! He may look like royalty, but he’s due for a royal beatdown! Alongside him, we have Vivian Xanthia, the bunny that’s going to need new arms to replace those fancy ones!”

A large holographic image of a lottery machine appears on all sides of the arena, with two spinners. The spinners spun so quickly, making it nearly impossible to make out the passing words. It ticked through the options slower and slower until it finally stopped on Wind Dust Field and Desert.

On Avery and Taylor’s side, rough terrain takes up the field as wind dust crystals emerge from the ground itself, becoming more and more concentrated towards the center. As for Vivian and Vermilion, sand as far as the eye can see as various and vast dunes take up that side of the arena. In the center would be a sandstorm caused by wind dust crystals being set off. Any more crystals would would worsen the sandstorm.

(A coin flip has decided that Avery will get the first post, followed by their partner. The arena size is identical to that of the team arena in the show, however, it features scaled down biomes to fit the size. Good luck, and may the best combatant win.)

As pointed of a statement as it was, Hunter was right: Avery's brothers had far greater combat capabilities than he did. Nevertheless, what he lacked in strength he made up for with his mind. Or at least he tried to.

"Let's get the formalities out of the way," he said before making his way to the other side of the arena, passing through the sandstorm in the process. As he emerged from the other side, he wiped away the sand around his eyes before opening them back up again, and he dusted the sand off of his arms and shoulders.

"Vermilion, Vivian: hello! Good luck and may the better team win!" Avery smiled and extended out his hand.

Taylor enjoyed her introduction thinking that it gave a solid introduction into what the audience should expect of her but she also felt that it gave away a fair bit of information to the enemy which she would rather them not let them know until it was too late. Well whatever she figured, it just meant she might not have had the initial second of confusion that she liked to start with. She internally shrugged as she walked out in the arena and taking in the massive crowd that had gathered to see her and Avery fight it out against the other two who were no doubt going to be tough opponents, they did get this far in the competition after all.

Taking in the battle arena that was created just for this fight Topaz began making a plan, the sandstorm would be the best place for her to fight as she could her crystals to get a better perspective on whats going on and gain the upper hand but it also wasn't great for shooting plus the sand and wind would make her loose he footing alot easier. She and Avery reached the middle of the arena quicker then she thought they would, and she rapidly came to the realization that she didn't think of what to do with Avery in her little plan, 'damn it'.

"Uh yeah, " Topaz said quickly snapping back into attention after realizing what Avery had said. "Good luck! Let's make it a good fight!" She said while conjuring up the biggest smile she could.

"Don't worry, Atlesians, I intend to win! Let's see how fun it'll be pummeling you into the ground!" Vermilion proclaimed in response to the greeting. The announcer pissed him off, that much was evident. Thinking that he'd be beat up was ridiculous and thinking he'd lose to a bunch of ice eating stuck-up idiots was even more absurd! He'll show them, he and Vivian. His long eared friend was nearby but he was too engrossed in his bravado that he didn't bother introducing her. The announcers did their part, capturing the crowd and now Vermilion was ready to dish out some pain.

Sand was everywhere again, for some reason sand took a liking to Vermilion. His past few missions involved sand, and even the training center had it. He hated it. It was coarse, rough, and got into everything. Thanking the fact that aura protected the fine machinations of his weapon Vermilion smugly grinned, wondering if Avery and Mylies could see his triumphant smile.

Extending his weapon to its long rifle form, Vermilion rested the weapon on his shoulder. The massive calibered firearm was a comforting weight. He extended one hand, as if in half greeting but it was clear he only meant one thing.

     "Come!"

Standing alongside her partner, Vivian squinted her eyes and hummed lightly as she noticed Avery approaching them on his own through the sand. The mentions from the announcers gave her little clue as to how exactly their opponents would fight, but seeing as he was kind enough to close the gap for her, engaging Avery seemed like the most obvious route to take. Meanwhile, her leader was acting like his usual self, something she had grown numb to. Leaning towards Vermilion, the girl stood on her toes for a brief moment to get closer to his height while speaking in a hushed tone.

"Oh, let me go after him first. You can take care of the girl and her 'drone'."

Rolling up the sleeves of her pink jacket, Vivian revealed more of her shiny prosthetics. A moment later, the thin and symmetrically patterned lines along her forearm and bicep lit up, glowing yellow to indicate the type of dust that had previously been inserted. The brightly glowing lines converged at both the back of her hands and her palms, at what appeared to be the main points of dust exhaust. The exposure of her arms served more of a purpose than simply showing off; electric dust visibly coursed throughout the limbs, the occasional flicker of electricity making it clear that they would be dangerous to touch. Despite that, she was quite obviously proud to have them on display to the world, a big grin stuck on her face.

As much as she wanted to return Avery's kind gesture with perhaps a handshake or high-five, doing so now and zapping him would most definitely be seen as a cheap attack. It would give her and Verm a good laugh, but this Atlas crowd certainly didn't need their stereotypes of the sneaky and conniving faunus validated. Instead, Vivian took a couple steps forward and entered an upright combat stance to make sure he knew what to expect.

"Have fun, guys!" the woman called out to the pair, giving Avery a couple more seconds before stepping forward again. The moment she did, she sent a shocking left-handed jab his way, aimed at his upper body [5% damage].

He retracted his hand, untouched by his opponents. Unseen by the public eye, Avery was grinning ear to ear. The eagerness and confidence of Vermilion and Vivian was something to cherish.

As their 'greetings' carried on, he took the time to examine is opponent's weapons, taking extra note of the fact that Vivian's arms and their rather threatening aura. Avery wondered if there were a reason she didn't take his hand, but as she got into a combat stance, it was clear that he would find out soon enough. He kept his hand by his weapon and his eyes intensely focused on Vivian's fists. At the first sign of a twitch, Avery started moving as well. In the split second he realized where the punch was headed, he dug his right heel into the sand and pivoted backwards while at the same time semi-extending his staff and digging it into the ground to kick some sand into the air. It was dishonorable, sure, but they didn't even give them the time to return to their side of the field; he was fine with letting his honor slip a bit if it meant returning the favor in some capacity.

Avery intended to send an attack Vivian's way post sand attack, but movement in the sand was still a fairly new experience and VIvian's punch still managed to nick him in the shoulder, jolting his arm and loosening his grip on his weapon. Instead, he jumped back and extended his weapon to full length.

"Topaz, retreat! I'll cover you!" he ordered her while taking a defensive stance.

This was going to be annoying.

Topaz hesitated for a moment before following Avery's order as she really wanted to just charge at Vivian with Lithium, but it would make more sense for her to hang back a bit and just plink away at them Vivian while Avery dealt with Vivian. With this in mind she headed back towards the wind crystal sliding behind one that was a small distance away from Avery but still along the middle while flipping Lithium into bow mode and notching an arrow. Popping out from behind her cover Topaz took aim at Vermilion and let a normal arrow loose, no point in wasting dust vials quite yet.

Vermillion flinched at the arrow blow, still half buried in his own bravado, and brought out his own rifle to fire back in turn. She seemed a little too far for his spears to land accurately and he wanted to relish the barrage. Wasting spears on someone who'd just keep running away wasn't nearly as fun as cornering them and then crushing them under his foot. Besides, the girl wasn't bright enough to pick a less unstable form of cover.

"Don't worry, honey, I won't bite!" Vermilion guffawed, spinning his rifle before readying the weapon. He aimed at the large dust crystal instead of the girl, sights darting between the two and then fired. He aimed to cause an explosion of wind to cover his approach and possibly also hurt the girl. He had his own ranged weapon, could also probably could also out-shoot that puny bow, but chasing around his target behind rocks and dunes would be annoying. Besides, it was much more fun to penetrate up close than at a distance.

Sprinting soon after, he shot behind him to get a boost the second the shot went off and transformed his weapon into its spear form. As he ran, Vermilion planted his spear into the ground and released the piston system, vaulting him into the air before landing on two spear shafts that appeared under his feet a moment later.  "Now that I'm up here I could properly look down on you insects. Now will you fight, or will you perish like a dog?" he challenged. Several spears formed not a second later around him, aiming down below as if ready to stab fish in a barrel.

Vivian lifted up her arm for a moment to block some of the sand, turning her head to the side and shutting her eyes as it briefly stunned her. She quickly regained her footing and shook her head, attempting to get some of it out of her rabbit ears. Unfortunately, the ongoing sandstorm was ensuring that she would never truly be free of that annoyance. It had given him the opportunity to keep his distance, something she needed to prevent. Vivian charged at him suddenly, the start of her run slowed slightly by the sand that she stood on. She still closed the gap rather quickly, balling up her fists and raising her arms as she came at him. This volley would surely burn through what was left of these particular vials of dust, but it was a chance worth taking. Making no effort to conserve her electricity, the girl sent a series of three hard straight punches with both hands [3 attacks, 5% damage each]. While the pace of her step slowed drastically, she kept up her approach, wanting to keep the pressure on.

Avery hoped that the Dust augmentation of Vivian's arms wouldn't last much longer. Even the slight nick that he took earlier was enough to do its fair share of damage, and since parrying was out of the answer, he couldn't do anything else but dodge. The first strike narrowly sailed past him, close enough that he could feel a slight tingling sensation as it went by. However, he wasn't so lucky the next time around. The sand was giving Avery a hard time and when he tried to dodge for the second time, he fumbled his footwork and took a solid one-two punch square in the chest.

He was sent back flying onto the sand, but he managed to get back up albeit slowly thanks to the effects of the electric Dust.

Seeing as she was hesitating, Avery sent two jabs with his staff[1] in retaliation.

Not long after shooting her arrow Topaz was assaulted by some wind created by the unstable crystal comprising her cover, the wind and debris that the small vortex created caused an insignificant amount of damage to her(3% damage) but it did have the side effect of pushing her back out of cover and into a more vulnerable position. Luckily her assailant hadn't taken the opportunity to attack her quite yet foolishly choosing instead to stand on some sort of spears taunting her.

"After you went the trouble of coming here it'd be rude to run." Topaz said as a grin crept across her face, the adrenaline was finally making its way through her body making the young huntress eager to end the talking and get to the much more exciting fighting. Spending no more time plinking arrows or bantering Topaz now charged straight at Vermillion flicking Lithium into its slightly shorter handheld mode and with a last-second jump she aimed the top side of Lithium toward her opponents gut in an attempt to wind him or potentially knocking him off his high horse of spears.

Vermilion scoffed at Topaz's reply, watching with interest as the girl charged. His height gave him more than enough time to react, and with weapons already pointed downwards it was only a matter of shooting down from the high ground. Aura spears readied, and his own spear in hand, he attacked the blindly charging girl with a barrage of pointy tipped terror spread out to hit her whole body. Red flashed in the air as the spears shot downwards towards the girl to interrupt her charge, about half a dozen spears, and many more forming behind them.

"Fool, didn't they teach you not to pick fights you can't win? I have the high ground!" he jeered, mockingly taunting the girl."If you run back now I'll let you jump off the arena but I would miss hitting you a bit more." The leering eyes of the crowd didn't bother him. He didn't care about the booing. What he did care about was crushing the insect that didn't know its place.

Laughing at the pitiful attempt, Vermilion raised a hand and more spears formed by him, looking pitifully upon Topaz. He didn't raise his own weapon, instead letting the his semblance do the job. Half a dozen more spears, now twelve in total, hung next to him like eerie tools of torture, their red tinted glow untainted by daylight.

Knocking Avery onto the ground was the opportunity that Vivian needed. Whistling casually to herself, she reached into her ammo pouch and pulled out two small dust canisters of a light blue tint. After these were spent, she'd be left only with kinetic, fire, and wind dust. Each would give her a brief power-up, though if she could simply land all of her punches, he'd surely be stunned long enough to let her swap them out. She went ahead and removed the empty vials before slipping the new one into the small compartment on her left arm.

In the process of reloading her right side with her left hand, she was suddenly and suprisingly jabbed twice from a distance [-8% aura], her grip on the canister tightening when the staff struck her. The ammunition was fragile, and her hand was far too strong. Ice exploded from the container the moment it cracked [-3% aura]. Her left fist was frozen shut in an instant, a big block of ice formed at the end of her forearm. The combination of his attack and her own mistake sent her stumbling back, momentarily dazed.

Vivian quickly shook her head, trying to keep her mind in the game. She had been careless! Too much confidence in her own chances, and she had missed an easy shot at continuing her assault. Now she had paid the price- her dust was loaded, but with her hand frozen over, it didn't matter yet. Her eyes locked onto Avery, paying much more attention than she had a minute ago. She began to bash her opposite arm against the ice, taking off chunk after chunk with each rapid swing. "Come get some more!" she taunted, hopping back twice to get just a little more distance between her and his staff. With the unstable ground below them, it wouldn't be the easiest weapon to avoid without the aid of her semblance.

Avery was thankful that the duration of the Dust effects was relatively short; if not, he would've been in a world of trouble. At the cost of Vivian's mistake, Avery now knew definitely that she was switching to ice; while he wasn't as worried about it as the electric Dust, it still had to potential to cause severe complications. He took a glance at Topaz who was managing to hold her own before charging at Vivian, all the while keeping an eye on her frozen fist.  He finally released the spearhead of his weapon and sent another jab[1] at Vivian as he hoped to keep her handicapped for as long as possible.

As Topaz began her charge Vermillion threw down his spears onto her resulting with three of them hitting her, the attack did force her to abort her initial attack focusing instead now on not taking more damage and finding a better way to get up to him. The arrogant seeming boy took some time to monologue briefly giving Topaz enough time get a new plan of attack ready.

"Hey now, I still got some tricks up my sleeves." Topaz said as she jumped up a while thrusting one end of Lithium into the wind crystal behind/under her, causing a large blast of wind to send her flying towards Vermillion on his floating spear platform. Once in the air she changed the positioning of Lithium into a more attack ready perpendicular to her in order to maximize the area she could hit. If she managed to hit him the extra omph the kinetic dust gave the attack on top of the momentum from the crystal and her hitting him should ideally slam him into the ground as well giving her a much better area to fight him on.
