CHARACTER

Name: Setsuna Antiqua

Age: 18

Species and Gender: Human Male

Symbol:  Two O's stuck together forming a infinity sign with a neon green background

Occupation: First year Beacon Academy student

Appearance: Setsuna is 175 cm, or 5'7" with a slender frame. He has very dark grey eyes, often mistaken for ink-black, a small, sharp nose and relatively thin lips which are almost always in a neutral state. He is slightly tanned and has short, spiky black hair which reaches halfway down his neck. There is a short lock of hair down Setsuna's right side which is dyed juniper green. Apart from the school uniform, Setsuna prefers to wear a white T-shirt with a circle for his backpack symbol, a black leather tool belt for emergency repairs to his weapons, and dark grey, faded and slightly battered trousers with a bandolier where normal pockets would be, holding up to 5 Dust canisters on each bandolier for his weapon. He also has a grey camouflage jumper which he sometimes wears.  Attached to his back is a custom backpack that consists of a mechanical arm which stretches as far as his left shoulder, used for holstering a part of his weapon. The backpack also goes around his neck, ending in a medallion-shape circle at his chest, where his symbol is shown.

History: Setsuna, unlike others, has had a relatively comfortable and peaceful life living in Patch. Early on, Setsuna had already shown his mother's traits of being a likeable person, friendly and polite, and his father's traits of being a Huntsman, as well as an uncanny habit of naming anything he liked/owned. As a young child, Setsuna was engrossed with tales of chivalry and bravery that knights of yore exhibited, and Setsuna endeavoured to do the same, protecting the innocent and deliver justice with the sharp end of a sword. To that end, Setsuna enlisted with Signal Academy.

As Signal Academy required it's students to do, Setsuna forged his own weapons along with the rest of his class, designing a stock sword and shield, in line with the "knight" theme that he strived for. The sword and shield he named Dischord and Harmony respectively, as his sword would "sow dischord among his enemies" and his shield would "bring harmony to the land of the honored". Setsuna would later customise his weapons and take reference from a manga he read, to create his upgraded (and current) Dischord and Harmony.

Within his time at Signal, Setsuna also designed his own clothing and gear, eventually coming up with his mechanical backpack for better mastery of his own weapons, becoming a self-reliant student. The way he pursued his dreams of being a "knight" meant that selflessness and honorable conduct made Setsuna a very likable student, protecting his friends from harm, and even going so far as to duel Grimm and treat the remains with respect as they vaporised into the ground.

Due to Setsuna's cheerful personality and respect for everyone he met, it wasn't long before everything was cleared for Setsuna to take the next step into Beacon Academy. No matter what happened in the bastion that was one of the greatest Academies in Remnant, Setsuna would always stick by his beliefs, no matter the situation, human or Grimm.

"Victory for the honored!"

Personality: Setsuna is a open-hearted, friendly and polite person, making most everyone take a liking to him, given time. He has shown a caring personality to those he trusts, as well as observing proper courtesies with nary a complaint. He is not incredibly social, and will not actively engage people in talk unless there is a certain reason, often preferring to listen. Although not incredibly academic, Setsuna has shown a interest in reading, especially in mechanics, to further improve Dischord and Harmony. When under stress, which is not often, he shrugs it aside and doesn't let it bother him. However, one thing that Setsuna is extremely touchy about is his weapons and gear. If anyone makes even the slightest negative comment about his choice of gear, Setsuna gets incredibly aggressive, even to the point where he will swear at the offending person, even if there is a teacher nearby. Setsuna does not feel any different toward Faunus, and treats them like he treats every other person: cheerful and uplifting.

Aura and Semblance: Setsuna's Aura glows neon green, and while not particularly powerful or much help in terms of boosted strength, he has a relatively large Aura pool to draw from to use his Semblance. His Semblance grants Setsuna the benefits of increased movement and reaction speed, making Setsuna's entire body and weapons glow a pink-reddish hue instead of the normal neon green, as well as leaving afterimages wherever Setsuna moves. This allows Setsuna to react and move around fast enough to rival Speed glyphs, able to cut incoming projectiles in half or even quarters to avoid harm. However, this does not slow or increase time for either Setsuna or his opponent. If Setsuna takes a heavy blow during the duration of his Semblance, it will forcibly end and leave Setsuna incapable of reactivating his semblance for a short duration. An aftereffect of the Semblance is that when it ends, no matter the duration it was active for, Setsuna will be visibly tired, and thus hit less hard, move slower and react slower than usual for around 30 seconds. He can keep this semblance up for about a minute or so, even under strain or pressure. Setsuna can use his Semblance for up to 3 times in a row, with a minute of "cooldown", but if he goes over 3 times, the reaction and speed is significantly slower. Setsuna has dubbed his Semblance the "Quantum System".

Combat Behavior: Setsuna's combat behavior is similar to the way he treats others: fair and square. He follows rules of chivalry like the knights of old, albeit with several technical alterations. Setsuna does not rely on Dust effects, only using Dust to power Dischord and Harmony. He prefers a balanced approach to most enemies, showing little weakness and not making many risky decisions. Due to Dischord's long range for a sword, Setsuna can safely and easily engage spear-using foes, but due to the lack of ranged options at Setsuna's disposal (Dischord's pistol form and Harmony's Sword Bits), Setsuna is vulnerable to long-range weapons, especially heavy-hitting rockets and grenades, as Harmony was designed for swordfights and not explosions. However, this deficit can be somewhat negated by Setsuna's "Quantum System" semblance, allowing Setsuna to close the distance between his foes incredibly quickly.

WEAPONS

Name: Dischord and Harmony

Primary Form: Dischord is Setsuna's main weapon, designed after a certain weapon he saw in a manga once. It takes the form of a longsword handle, with blue edgeguards on the top and bottom of the hilt stretching as far as halfway up the arm between the elbow. Further up the "blade" is a mechanism not unlike a lightsaber with the extension of the blade, with a round base attached to the hilt and two sections protruding outward from the base, in line with the hilt. When in sword form, a neon-green blade made of tempered steel extends out from between the two protruding sections and the base. The length of Dischord is around the same as a normal longsword. There is a slot in the handle for Dust cartridges to be inserted into. When not in use, the blade retracts and Dischord is stored at Setsuna's left waist.

http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/gundam/images/6/60/C01a.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/185?cb=20100818131148

Secondary Form: When Dischord is in it's pistol form, the blade and the base turns sideways, the handle bends downward slightly and the two edgeguards spread out, one to act as a aiming sight and the other to act as a handguard. Two slots open in the base of the blade and can fire charges of Dust rounds, not very powerful but enough to deter weaker Grimm. From a full Dust cartridge, Dischord can discharge up to 16 shots before requiring a reload, and does not have an alternate fire mode. If Dischord runs out of Dust, the shots simply do not fire.

Secondary Weapon: Harmony is Setsuna's shield. It is shaped like a elongated hexagon, the length of which is from Setsuna's hand up to his elbow, with layers of prussian blue and white armor, with slots around the side. When not in use, Harmony is kept at Setsuna's left side, mounted upon his backpack's mechanical arm, capable of rotating Harmony to a more defensive position in front of Setsuna's elbow, or a less cumbersome position behind Setsuna's shoulder. Harmony can also be detached from the arm and mounted upon Setsuna's left arm, to act as a more traditional shield. The main usage of Harmony is its six green Sword Bits, mounted around Harmony. The Sword Bits can detach from Harmony, expanding from the slots around Harmony, or can simply fan out to create a larger surface area, and can combine with Dischord to create a buster sword. In this form, Dischord's handle extends to make a dual-handed greatsword. The Sword Bits can also act as extra swords for Setsuna to use, but are merely a backup option.

Dust Functions: Dischord is powered by Dust, and Setsuna keeps Dust cartridges on his bandoliers to resupply it. However, Dischord only accepts green (wind) Dust, and they seem to serve no use apart from powering Setsuna's weapon and colouring them neon green.

History: Dischord and Harmony were built during Setsuna's time at Signal, taking ideas from a manga he read. Setsuna further improved upon them and designed the mechanical backpack to help with his combat capabilities.

This is just a final general point that I think will spice up the profile as a whole.
Kei was mutilated and crippled in the middle of a combat mission he was supposed to be able to deal with. Besides the clear effects it has on his attitude (you have done an excellent job doing to demonstrate that) there are some physical and psychological effects missing.
Is Kei pursuing any therapy trying to move on from the incident and forgive his teammates (basically the mental side of learning how to trust again)?
Is he still pursuing any physical therapy to learn how to adjust to his relatively new implant? (I know its been 3 years but still)
Does he suffer from any PTSD or flashbacks/episodes back to the incident? I doubt the feeling of a Grimm's claws wracking across your back is easy to forget.
Does he get shakes in combat?
Does he experience any feelings of self-doubt and hesitance?

If you want your character to experience a traumatic event I would like to see how that affects him in every stage of his life.
And If he has grown up and moved on while still carrying ghosts from his past I would like to know how far he has come and where he plans to go.

Add some (not all of it is needed just some fleshing out) of this and I think we'll be very close to finished!

Appearance:
A little bit of awkward phrasing here.
Quote
His face is straight and serious, often foreboding, and he often wears glasses.

I also see no cause in the rest of his profile for him to have the skills to be able to repair something so complicated like a spinal implant.

History:
In the world of remnant there is no "Asia". Or "China" so you will have to remove all mention of them in the profile.

The closest thing that we have to it would be Mistral but as we have seen very little of it in the actual show asides the WoR about it there are somethings that have to be assumed.
Everyone who is known/thought to hail from Mistral speaks perfect English and shows no signs of ever spoken a second language or have the dialect of being raised in an environment surrounded by one.
So unfortunately I think we'll have to stick with English for now as a base language.
However since calligraphy is a keystone to his semblance I don't see why it should be removed even though the meanings won't be there(nobody speaks the language), heck we have no idea what the glyphs Weiss draws mean but we still accept them anyways.

Did he grow up in Mistral or Vale? If he grew up in Mistral why would his parents let him go to Signal if they are so proud of their heritage. If in Vale, why did the family move from Mistral to begin with?

Finally huntsman teams are there for a reason. Letting an inexperienced and traumatized kid go it alone through beacon is simply unrealistic, especially when they seem to be so focused on character building and improvement.

Personality:
Mention of China again and the second language.

Combat Behavior:
Please give him some real in depth weaknesses to counteract his extreme versatility
Lack of armor isn't a real weakness since aura is a universal defending armor.
Everybody (expect for speed oriented char's)has problem closing distance against marksman without support.
His spine cannot be damaged as long as aura is up and if his aura goes down the match will probably be over anyways.

Please expand in more depth on how his trauma effects his combat.

Sorry to cause confusion,
The semblance was fine! No don't change the semblance it was perfectly balanced.
It's his combat behaviour that needs balancing by adding more weaknesses.

Hey I really like the way you've balanced the semblance but! Since this semblance is very similar to Weiss's, can he use it on other people to give them a buff?

EDIT:
Also add more weaknesses cause right now he doesn't have enough for the amount of strengths he has.

IRC vs Discord
I do definitely think that Discord is a better medium (more easily accessible and easy to navigate for the majority of users compared to IRC)
The idea for creating "live" threads is also an idea definitely worth exploring, especially so for people who feel like they don't want to devote an entire idea to a thread (things like conversations or just in character, character building). Since you can create different chat rooms in Discord if would provide a neat way to get it all set up as different threads. However while Nathan mentioned how messy it might get to have so many servers, it should also be considered (if we do have "live" threads like you suggest) would be the clutter. What happens when a thread ends and people stop responding? Does it sit there and collect space? Do we delete the server and store the story in an archive? Just a thought to consider.

Info and Comms
Pretty much all I've wanted to say about this was covered by nathan and well...you
One thing to add would be that this also makes it easier for people to write a World Build. Knowing exactly what has happened in our history and what is common knowledge would probably open up the gates a little for people with less knowledge to make great world additions.

Adds
Wish I could help here...

Storyline and Freeform
I do like the idea of keeping some threads in kind of a "limbo" while some are put into more organized and slow pace novel type setting. However there is just one thing that might be better than four people. If we limited this new type of storyline threads to 4 people then we would be doing a couple of things. Hunters (probably the most powerful game changers on the forums since they are the "ideal" characters) would be mostly left out since huntsman teams aren't exactly present at this moment. In fact it would probably consist of 90% 1st year teams and 10% everybody else. Not only that, when we restrict entry to 4 people we are opening up the gates to a lot of people who just lose interest in their team/their characters/the site and end up disappearing (most prominent with new users). This would muddy the experience for everyone. However if we kept it to two people (say, the partners that you first see in your initiation) we would not only drop the amount of problems previously mentioned but also only having to keep in touch and manage one other person asides from yourself seems a lot easier then 3.
Of course these are all ideas to bounce around and none of them are inherently bad.

Character Approval
You have no idea how much I would love to have a chat room like that.
The hardest characters to review are not the "mary-sues" or the "edgey sasuke" but the "borderliners"
The characters that toe the line of acceptable and deniable because TECHNICALLY what they propose could work but you would like a second opinion.
This would allow people to get a second opinion or 3rd while cutting down the wait time greatly.

I know a profile like this made by you would usually get pushed through nearly instantly
However,
There are just some questions I have (mostly out of curiosity rather than error) even though it is an extremely well written profile
Also sorry to be picky but there are just some silly spelling mistakes you probably just missed

Quote
Personality: If anything, Mia is driven. She always strives to accomplish any task she sets her mind to. However, per past has taught her to maintaining awarelessof one's surroundings and situation is important, so she tries to step back and analyze situations, though it doesn't always work out. Patience is something she works for, but can be difficult for her at times.
per- her?
awareless- awareness?

Semblance
Two questions
Does she have a limit to the amount of echoes that she can create?
and
Can echoes re-create dust effects?
For example would an echoes be able to replicate the extra range of a wind dust attack or perhaps with enough effort a second Lostfon Drive?
If the answer is "no" then would these effects be able to be replicated with the right Foci?

You will need a world build if you wish to make an order of monks like the one you are suggesting.
I in fact have a monestary in WIP of world building but I have for a while. So if you would like a hand at it go ahead!

Beacon Academy / Re: A Casual Time-Wasting Spar [CLOSED]
« on: February 27, 2017, 06:54:21 AM »
Griz stared blankly as everyone took their places. One word was racing through his mind at that very moment. One sirene, elegant word. Fuck.
The ram Faunus had been hoping that they could just double team. Then he could just cut back and only do 50% of the work. But of course these guys wanted a battle royal so I guess he was just going to have to deal with it.
Slowly sauntering to his corner of the field his gauntlets emmited a low whirring hum as the kinetic dust activated. Griz already had a plan on how to handle this situation. It's not like he haven't done this exact thing before and won. After all he wasn't a tourney champion for nothing.
As he sensed the moment which the referee would start the match was coming Griz unleashed his aura he had been keeping under wraps..
He always hated this part, it always drew way to much attention. His aura flared widely as an explosion of power radiated around him. Aura bubbles fizzed and rocketed into the sky like a coke bottle on mentos.
Griz shared a lazy emerald filled gaze with the ref.
"Ok buddy I think we are ready to start on your signal."

Griz chuckled at the faunus's antics, ignorant of any hostility. If anything he was glad he would have such eager opponents.
Sauntering into the clearing the arena made its debute. The area looked fairly simple. A grassy field complete with a few trees and shrubbery. A white line could barley be seen forming a large rectangular arena. Griz slowly walked over to the panel and punched in a few numbers and swiped his hunter ID. In a flash of light a barrier flung up around the area. It would allow things in but nothing come out until the match was finished. After yawning loudly Griz hung his jacket and jeans on the branch of a tree revealing a tank top and sport shorts underneath. He also pulled out his weapon "Twin Stars" before sitting down on one side of the arena.

"So everything should be set up and ready to go. Grab your weapons and choose a side of the arena. If you want to go 2v2 just stand with me or the other side of the field. If you wanna go battle royal just stand in a corner. But don't rush *yawn*. I'm not going anywhere"

Griz took this time to look at the sky. The endless blue seemed to be calling him. It would be a perfect spot for a nap...aw well opportunity wasted. The ram Faunus did some stretches to warm up and waiting for the spar to start.
