Flying high in the sky returning from a job Cornell's celebrations are cut short from a bleep from a scroll. It's the only warning she gets before her contact launches into a rapid fire sales pitch.

Hey, hey, why isn't my favourite pirate? Let me tell you I've found the best pay days you'll ever get. Classy lady do some exposing thing asked for you by name, says you both have a lot in common. Won't tell me details but wants to meet face to face. I'll pass on her location but you better remember who put you two in contact when the lien comes in. I'd say good luck but you don't need it, but come around some time. The kid loves ya.

The contact hangs up as quickly as he spoke and the coffin is engulfed in silence once more. Longitude and latitude coordinates come through a moment later, the woman her contact was talking about is nearby on an island off the Vacuo side of Sanus. Uninhabited or at least it was the last time Cornell checked. Although the sun was still bright clouds seemed to be coming from the north and despite everything an odd feeling started building within Cornell.

Once Cornell gets close to the island she is suprised to see that her scans have picked up a rather substantial base on the island equipped with large defensive batteries which although designed to fight grimm could still cause havoc on the Red Corsair's shields. The building itself is squat and utilitarian but there is no movement around the facility. A landing bay close to the main hanger is empty but strangly enough the Corsair would be the only craft on the island, no ships or air craft are visible on the Corsair's scans.

" . . . Wot in th' bloody hells?" Were the first words to roll off Captain Cordell's lips following the unexpected Scroll call, the look on her face one of sheer confusion which gradually gave way to annoyance. She wasn't in the habit of providing her number to people -- she kept the Scroll mostly as a formality, a 'just in case' should a client want to stay in touch during a job. When someone hired her it was usually through the dark net CCTS site or, if the client was more oldschool, leaving a message for her at the bars she frequented in Vacuo. But certain customers didn't much take to her more cautious approaches, it seemed. She recognized the voice after the fact: a black market "matchmaker" who lined up business connections for the criminally inclined. He'd seemed the pushy sort initially, and now that he was taking to disregarding her security precautions he'd officially landed himself on Cordell's bad side.

"Arrogant bastard. Del, upload those coordinates an' add mister Beauregard t' th' straight-to-voicemail list, would'ya? " Putting her celebratory tumbler of rum aside, she plugged a seldom-used connection cable into her equally-seldom-used Scroll, making it accessible to Delahaye.

"One moment captain -- interfacing now."

After her First Mate / virtual assistant worked magic in ones and zeroes, Cordell pulled up the coordinates on a display map, then cross-referenced whatever files she could. Nothing of note... no inhabitants... no unusual Grimm activity... not even on any smuggling routes, at least as far as she knew. She narrowed her eyes, looking distrustfully at the island map in front of her while she thought. "Big payday" for "some exposing thing"...? Face to face meeting, with no details beforehand? No... no way in hell did this sit well.

"I take it from your expression that you are concerned. We have little information to go on and no firm reasons to get involved. Should I assume we will not accept the job?"

Cordell sighed, slumping into her chair and pulling her hat down over her face. The haul from the cargo ship they'd just raided was good, but not that good -- the Red Corsair was going to need new linkages on the starboard side in the next few weeks and a replacement N-S oscillator for the main generator's Dust flow controls, neither of which would come cheap. The need to keep her ship flying dueled with her desire to avoid getting suckered into a scam -- or worse, a trap. Groaning, she sat up and glared at the island map once more.

"Nothin' ventured, nothin' gained. I don't much like it, but I like loose ends less. Whoever they are, they're askin' fer Cordell... an' that's exactly what they're gonna get."

What disquiet she'd had before arrival only intensified as she saw her destination. Thanks to the ship's sensors she could see the rough makeup of the base -- and the firepower it was packing -- at a significant distance. Plotting a course that maximized their ability to duck out if the guns started firing, the Red Corsair cautiously swung by for a closer look. Sensors came up with a big fat "nobody home": no airships, no movement, not even a sailboat on the shore. Just... nothing. An empty landing pad, some serious firepower, and some bargain bin looking reinforced structures. This begged FAR more questions than it answered.

"So... on th' one hand, if this 'classy lady' with fat stacks o' lien set all this up, she's clearly good for th' cash." Donning her full regalia, Cordell strode out of the cockpit and headed for the jump room, descending a narrow steel ladder to the lower level of the ship. "On th' other, that cash had'a come from somewhere. Kingdoms, military, SDC, th' bloody Fang -- somewhere."

"A logical assumption, yes."

"Which means if Moneybags McSecretBase wants t' hire me, chances are those guns ain't just fer show. Probably means it ain't just gonna be a one-on-one meetup, neither."

"You anticipate an ambush?"

The pirate made a noise between a huff and a chuckle as she opened a reinforced weapons locker. "I'd be stupid not t', ay? That's why we ain't exactly gonna use th' front door." She tucked away one ammo clip after another into her jacket, checking several briefly to make sure they were full and cross-loading those that weren't. "Bring us up t' high altitude an' make ready fer a pass over th' base."

"You intend to jump." It wasn't a question. Cordell couldn't help but grin.

"What can I say? I love this bit."

The Treasure Quest
by Peter Crowley Fantasy Dream

Strapping on two Zephyr Cutlasses, one on each hip, and carefully stowing her hat, the brunette completed her preparations by donning a parachute and double-checking that her comm device was securely fastened. Marching over to a big red lever on the wall, Cordell paused. "Del, standin' orders time. Once I'm on th' ground make fer a safe distance an' await further instructions. If I get captured or worse, or if ye lose me signal fer more'n ninety minutes, use a random evasive path t' get th' ship an yerself back home. Wait fer th' usual signals before comin' back fer me... an' tell me ol' man not t' lose his head an' do anythin' rash, savvy?"

"Understood captain. Good luck, and come back safe."

Flipping the switch caused red emergency lights to begin flashing, the doorway back into the ship sealing with a pressurized 'hiss'. A second later the air pressure began to equalize to the outside and a brisk chill flooded the room. Walking over to the edge of the main floor hatch, a deviously grinning Cordell watched it slide open and the island -- barely more than a tiny speck far below now -- come into view.

"Optimal jump path in twenty five seconds... twenty... fifteen... ten... five..." On the stroke of 'one', Cordell spun herself around and launched into a backflip, whooping excitedly as she did so.

The air whipped at her face, hair, and crimson long coat as gravity took hold, the young woman's world becoming a wash of grey skies and pale seas as her ship flew away behind her. Ahead, the island -- and its weaponry -- steadily grew until she could see it with some clarity. The bet she'd made with her jump was this: if the guns were active then the big ones would have trouble tracking a human-sized target while the small ones wouldn't have the ability to track something moving at terminal velocity. It was a move she'd successfully pulled off before, though admittedly never against this many boomsticks. If she survived the descent she'd aim to land on the building's roof, or at least tumble off of it. Mentally she ticked off her descent, running the mental calculations for when pulling her chute would made the difference between a rough landing... and a deadly one.

Cornell's landing is unhindered. The guns do not react to the Red Corsair's appearance, maneuvers or Cornell's sky diving. Neither do they react when the pirate captain lands on the roof of the main building. On ground level Cornell still can't see anyone outside and the only heat signatures are coming from the building she just landed on, three although two seemed much larger and hotter than usual. Once the Red Corsair leaves auditory range the complex falls back into dead silence for a few moments only to be broken by speakers. 'Greetings Captain Cornell, if you could make your way inside the main building we can discuss the terms of our contract.' The harsh robotic voice ended with a slight burst of static then the complex once again fell into silence.

Cornell can get vision on the heat signatures inside the building before they seem to notice her through a window. There is a young blond woman dressed in a red pencil dress at a desk overflowing with papers talking scroll and two larger figures behind her presumably body guards. One male, one female, both heavily built with horns coming out of their heads, buck horns on the male and sleeker buffalo horns on the woman both in identical black suits. They don't make any reaction until Cornell enters the room with the woman acting happy and almost fan girlish while the two bodyguards remains as stoic as ever.

The announcement over the speaker system repeats every couple of minutes if Cornell takes that long to make her way down one way or another. On her way over she does notice that very little power seems to be flowing outside the main building with the guns inactive and none of the light switches working yet. Still the base was solidly made, Cornell's landing not even leaving a scratch in the concrete. None of these facts help relieve the strangely oppressive feeling of being alone in a concrete jungle as well as the niggling feeling that Cornell in being watched.
No criticism is too harsh so hit me with your best shot.

So far, this was... easy. Really easy. Hard-earned experience had taught Cordell not to trust things that were this easy --

"Greetings Captain Cordell, if you could make your way inside the main building we can discuss the terms of our contract."

-- that said, however, she was here now. Even if this went south, the most she could do was see it through. A quick pulse of her Semblance revealed the locations of three people in the building below... and that there was no power actively flowing to the defenses nearest her. Closing her eyes and focusing, she reached out her mind again and extended the pulse's reach. Yeah, barely any power flowing in this place at all. That alone was surprising. She was grateful that her hosts weren't trigger happy, but to leave the defenses completely powered down like this? There had to be more to it than simply rolling out the welcome mat.

Sighing, she shrugged off the parachute, taking a minute to grin at the sight of her emblem emblazoned on the main chute's black fabric. A second sounding of the invitation made it clear she ought to get moving. The client was waiting...

A boot to the door was how the brazen young pirate chose to knock, kicking it open briskly and then standing, poised and confident, in the doorway. The bodyguards, to their credit, didn't much seem to react -- boring, but far more convenient than them pulling triggers, at least. "Right then, let's start with th' whos and whys." She strode into the room, one hand on the pommel of her right-side cutlass. "Ye clearly know me... now howsabout ya go an' explain why I'm here... an' why I should trust any o' this, aye?"

Busting down the door seemed to strangely lack the catharsis Cornell usually derived from such reckless endeavours. The audio feedback lagged slightly and the air pressure inside the room felt significantly higher than in the corridor. Regardless Cornell continued her blustering demands to the clear joy of the woman in the red dress but having no affect on the stone-eyed glare of the body guards. Whispering a few more words into her scroll the lady in red quickly deposited the device on the table and started moving quickly towards the captain with a large smile on her face. The female body guard also moved forward a few steps to be now in front of her desk.

'I'm so happy to meet you Captain Cornell. I would have come out to meet you but my daughter is on her first date and... yea.... She is a big fan by the way have you thought about putting out action figures?

Anyway my name is Rachael and I've asked you here because because you have created quite the reputation. It's good to see someone with more of a pragmatic approach to their operations. As such we might have something that you might be interested.

Rachael begins speaking rapidly and smiling widely. Raising her hand to excuse herself as Rachael turns back to the desk looking through the papers. Finding what she was looking for Rachael turned back around and continued towards Cornell the papers in her outstretched hand. The papers are detailed breakdowns of an Atlas transport ship from weight, metal alloys used to max speeds and manoeuvrability. This information could only come from someone inside the manufacturing outlets of Atlas itself. Other pieces are weather reports signifying an immense storm moving around Atlas as well as possible movements.

So myself and a lot of other people are very worried about the increased militarisation of Atlas over the past few decades. The more we can prove Atlas is acting out the more international pressure we can place on them to ensure a cultural shift. Although it is unlikely this will change anything unless their is an implication of a non-state actor getting their hands on it. It's one thing for a kingdom to create another dangerous bomb but something else entirely if an infamous pirate gets their hands on it. And given your previous actions I am confident that you won't use that weapon for any more damage that Atlas would.

Rachael's tone grew more serious but her expressions remained upbeat and smiling. The strange sensations of being watched got stronger and stronger as Cornell stood in the doorway. This sensation morphed into the feeling that something was coming from behind. Not using her semblance Cornell couldn't notice anything but if she does she could notice an aura construct looking similar to the male bodyguard moving through her and returning to the male bodyguard.
No criticism is too harsh so hit me with your best shot.

One eyebrow raised, Cordell patiently waited as Rachael made her proposition. She accepted the offered paper, her eyes lingering long enough to spot key engineering details which drove her raised eyebrow up even further. A weapons test, was it? The bit about a 'non-state actor' certainly got her attention, and raised her concerns. She couldn't help but wonder just how much these people knew...

When Rachael had finished, Cordell leaned against the door frame and held the paper, nodding intently but not at first saying anything. "So... action figures, ay?" After that, however, she couldn't quite manage to keep a straight face and broke into a disbelieving laugh. "Tides an' storms, lady! Are ye often in th' habit o' hirin' scoundrels t' steal military secrets on th' hope an' prayer as they won't use or sell 'em? I'd say yer too trustin', but yer hired guns suggest otherwise. What makes ye think that I--"

Prompted by the growing uneasy sense of being watched, Cordell had been quietly pulsing her Semblance since coming into the building... at this particular moment, however, she noticed something that seemed entirely not right. It felt exactly like someone was behind her, close enough to be breathing down her neck. The pirate's eyes went wide and she was about to draw her blade when she felt the Aura presence pass straight through her, sending a chill up her spine as it did so. "What in th' bleedin' hells...?" Her eyes darted about for a moment and she fired off another pulse of awareness, this time perceiving clearly the link -- merging, in fact -- of the unseen construct and its master-apparent. Fixing her eyes on the bodyguard for a long moment, yet seeing no reaction from him, Cordell took a deep breath and did her best to act as though nothing had happened... though the bodyguards would certainly notice that she seemed much more on alert than she'd been upon entering.

"Right," She cleared her throat. "Here's th' thing. I'm in th' habit o' not gettin' mixed up in Atlas' business, an' I greatly fancy stayin' alive, so tell me why I should get involved. I can tell ye 'worried people' got money t' throw at this, an' that's fine, but I'd be takin' a mighty big risk -- not just th' mission, but th' fallout afterwards. I get enough trouble with th' folks comin' for me head already, an' Atlas is one mighty nasty beehive t' prod at. What're ye payin', an' what assurances do I have?"

'Yea, we thought about trying to make our own' Rachael responds turning back to around for her scroll, tapping a few buttons before showing it to Cornell. 'I wouldn't suppose you could give some opinions?' Rachael continues offering the device to Cornell opened to a series of pictures of fabrics and colours similar to Cornell's own outfit. Rachael does look a bit nervous when her bodyguards are mentioned although the suits don't respond to Cornell's comment. 'In truth even if you do take advantage of this technology it's unlikely you would ever be able to do the amount of damage Atlas could.' Rachael answered before quickly adding. 'That's a compliment.'

'As for payment lien either transfer to an account of your choosing or you could have it hard upfront. Enough to retire on if you are fugal, I can recommend an investor and accountant... Although anyone can offer you money. I can offer you an identity when you are not... you know... pirating to live anywhere within the Kingdoms ... well within reason ... and not be ...disturbed at least until the heat from this cools down. Think of it as a bonus when you come back.' Rachael continues handing Cornell more papers except these ones detail properties in various places around Remnant all with incredible vistas.

'If you are taking the job we will need you to move quickly, the storm is moving fast and well Atlas is a lot closer to it than here. We have basic supplies for your craft, based off our best guestimations of the Red Corsair's specs. Anything we don't have you may simply have to do without. This is a time sensitive mission.' Rachael remarked getting more serious as the actual business side of this business deal came around. 'She can help you to the store room and collect anything you need. Also I know you have a preference for missions avoiding living Atlas personel. An admiral goal but it will be impossible here I'm afraid.' Rachael motions to the female guard.

Other information Cornell gleams from her semblance includes that although both guards have significant aura reserves, not equal to fully fledged hunters but not far off, Rachael herself as no aura. The supplies in the store room if Cornell takes Rachael up on her offer are not specifically designed for the Red Corsair but could be used with very little rigging except for the fuel which works as a perfect substitute.

She was... serious about the whole action figure thing?! The pirate blinked in surprise as she accepted the Scroll, glancing through the displayed fabrics on screen while listening to the rest of what Rachael had to say. The mention of a false identity drew her immediate interest -- she'd played at disguise and fake names to help pull off the occasional heist or job, but a full-tilt viable alter ego? That was a whole other scale of things, and it said a lot about how connected her new employer was.

Just who was she about to work for, exactly...?

The mention of urgency was met with a nod -- Cordell, more out of bemusement than anything else, ticked off three of the fabrics displayed on the Scroll before handing it back, then reached into the inner pockets of her longcoat. The device she drew out looked a bit like a home-made Scroll, far more rough around the edges than a standard manufactured model but also rugged and durable. This she placed on Rachael's desk. "No less than eighty thousand, plus expenses an' hazard pay -- an' there's gonna be a lot o' that, I suspect. Twenty thousand up front or I take me ship an' fly away." She turned to head for the door, then stopped and looked over her shoulder. "... An' make that two new identities. I'll forward th' details once I'm back on me ship."

"That's a custom transponder -- it'll get ye in touch with me via th' Red Corsair an' vice versa, but only until our business is concluded. Since time's critical I'll get right to it, but I got a lot more questions for ye... not least o' which bein' who th' hells I just signed on with. Right then, let's see these supplies."

After a brief bit of poking about in the supply stash (which, it looked like, would do to cover wear & tear plus fuel for the trip) Cordell took what would fit on a pallet and wheeled it out to the landing platform. Once outside, and confident she wasn't being listened in on, she sighed in frustration. "Del, you get all that?"

"Indeed, captain. Shall I run a market value forecast for your action figure line?"

"Har har, very funny Del."

"Glad to hear it -- research suggests that topical humor is an effective tool for helping to cope with stressful situations. I can, however, run a full or abbreviated projection should you wish it."

"... Still got some o' th' old programming in there, I see. Let's focus on th' mission for now."

"I feel obligated to point out that this mission is in a statistically higher risk bracket than the vast majority of your undertakings, captain. You also lack sufficient data to confirm that you will be paid what was promised, as we know almost nothing about your new employer."

"All true, admittedly. One important fact, however: whatever this new tech is that Rachael -- if'n that be her real name, even -- an' cohorts are scared spitless of can't be good news. If it's somethin' as could be used against us, I'd rather have th' jump on matters as opposed t' th' other way around."

"A valid strategic point. The risk incurred by not acting may exceed the risks of the mission itself."

"Bingo. Bring th' ship in fer landin' Del, an' get th' engines ready fer a long, high-speed burn. Can't bloody well believe I'm sayin' this, but... we're headed t' Atlas territory."

Rachael's smile impossibly grew even larger as Cornell selected some fabric options and gladly accepting the scroll back. 'Oh she will be so excited thank you so much.' The businesswoman began staring down at the device for a few moments before continuing. 'As for funds we have bank transfer or solid lien, both would be payed half now half on completion although the former would require another meeting and although I know I would love it, you might have other plans.... which I understand of course busy woman as you are.' Rachael continued hefting a briefcase of lien from out.... well out of no where it seems. Rachael simply turned to the female body guard, reached behind her and pulled it out. Of course brief case wasn't really the correct term. It was a mammoth thing and Rachael clearly struggled to deposit it on the table but the guards didn't move to assist.

Slightly out of breath Rachael then takes the transponder in her hands and looks over it with a critical eye. Examining the device closely the business woman fiddles with a few of the edges before nodding in acceptance. 'Two identities, easier that way actually. Can use each other as references and link through to make more cohesive identities. Actually fun fact because no kingdom outside of Atla...' Rachael trails off slightly before frowning nervously. 'Probably not fun for you but if you have any questions feel free to ask while you are in the air. I've got some paper work I should finish but I guess that is one of the benefits of being in charge.' Rachael finished walking past Cornell to open the door for her. The female body guard matched her movements step for step ended up right next to the table with Cornell's cash payment on.

'Half up front right? So that's 60,000. Contact us if the Corsair needs any repair work afterwards I know a mechanic who would love to get his hands on it. Temporarily and with you watching of course.... sure you wouldn't have it any other way. As for the identities any preferences for either just... well same as the questions, I've got your thingy' Rachael finished still grinning the same happy smile despite parting with quite frankly a ridiculous amount of money and the promise with even more to come plus whatever the identities are worth.

Cornell's ride to Atlas territory is without incident. The skies are mostly clear and keeping an eye/ear on the radio chatter the pirate captain also found them strangely free of aircraft. Still unfortunately despite the immense speed of the Red Corsair it could not beat mother nature and by the time our heroes found the ship which matched the identifier they had been given it was already half engulfed in the storm. Not fair off the coast the storm still had a significant amount of ice and strange colours can be seen in the storm. Dust filings. The storm must have uncovered some illegal mine dumping and was now filled with unrefined dust. The Red Corsair's sensors could pick up gout of flame, islands of ice serious boulders. Approach will be difficult but the Atlas transport ship hasn't gotten to the dust-infused heart of the storm yet but it was making steady progress. Whatever the ship's mission the crew seemed willing the risk life and limb for it.

Sixty thousand Lien. Sixty thousand, all of it in various small-denomination cards that would make spending it without drawing unwanted attention that much easier. Back aboard the Red Corsair Cordell couldn't help but take a peek inside the huge case as she sorted the received supplies; she had to admit, the sight of so much money at once was nearly enough to make her giddy, at least when she wasn't considering what she was being paid to do. More practically, she made sure to systematically sweep the almost-a-suitcase in search of hidden signal or listening devices, using her Semblance to double-check the work of her eyes. It seemed clean and clear...

Once back in the ship's cockpit, Cordell wasted no time in sending out a call to the transponder she'd given Rachael. "So, Ms. Mysterious, seein' as ye just hired yerself a pirate an' all, it seems fittin' we chat en route t' th' job site before th' weather starts degradin' th' signal. Just who's runnin' this show'a yours? I get that some clients prefer anonymity, but most of 'em don't also have secret island bases an' intent t' throw a wrench in th' works'a equally secret weapons programs. Forgive me sayin' so, but this shindig has 'spy agency' or th' like written aaaaaaaaall over it. Th' resources, th' methods, th' whole shebang, like somethin' outta comic books. Am I wrong?"

"Either way, it's time I knew about you lot -- and th' target. What am I stealin', exactly? Bomb? Mech? Airship? Some sorta toxin? Please don't say it's a toxin..."

"Well... crap."

Aside from attacks by Grimm and... well, pirates, there was arguably no greater danger to any airship than a Dust-infused storm. Natural ones were bad enough, highly unpredictable with a nasty penchant for destruction, but when any sort of mined-up Dust -- even the unrefined stuff -- got mixed up in a weather pattern it stood to make things just that much worse. They were mercifully rare, but she'd seen one on the odd occasion over the course of her career. That said, the one displayed on her screens right now was an absolute monster by comparison. Flying into that would basically be suicide. She could likely get onto the target ship before it sailed in... but getting out afterwards? That would be a trick.

"Okay... so, here's how we're gonna play it." Cracking her knuckles and then stretching out her fingers, Cordell laid out a low-to-the-water approach trajectory that would put them directly behind the transport. "Get me in close enough for boardin' via zipline, then withdraw to... here." She marked a small speck of an island about thirty klicks southeast. "Land, bunker down, and wait fer orders. If ye come under threat, use th' standard protocols."

"With any luck this won't be nearly as crazy as it looks."

"I still calculate the risks of this mission as being exceptionally high, captain. I urge you to be careful." Del paused, a pair of new markers suddenly appeared on the local map. "Captain, sensors just picked up two more craft: a large transport boat and a small armed escort. They appear to be heading for the storm as well."

"Could be part o' this weapons test business as well. Have they spotted us?"

"I cannot be certain. These weather conditions are helping to conceal our approach but the weather anomaly is also causing disruptions to our stealth systems. I estimate their current effectiveness at between forty and seventy percent."

"So we can't rely on surprise... speed it is, then." Rising from the pilot's seat, the captain checked over her approach trajectory one last time with a slow, hopeful nod. "Okay, bring us in Del. Here goes nothing."

Seen from outside, the Red Corsair was a crimson shadow cutting its way through the winter gale, sweeping in low and riding just above the churning waves to avoid the worst of the storm winds. The main hatch of the jump room slid open as the pirate airship closed in on the transport, a large harpoon gun on a large mechanical arm lowering from the opening to take aim. Inside Cordell operated the targeting controls, her hair whipping about freely as the bluster from outside swept in; she'd have to keep her beloved hat tucked away for now or risk losing it to the tempest.

She'd need to be close to pull this off anything resembling safely. Fortunately the big boat didn't have any onboard guns so there was no risk of getting shot down at this range, but close quarters under these conditions was still not a simple thing. She watched the rangefinder tick down, knowing that the longer this boarding maneuver took the greater danger there would be from the storm. 250 yards... 200... 150... She was close enough now to paint the target of her landing zone, then hand it off to Del for windspeed calculations. 100 yards... 50 yards and closing...

With a loud burst of compressed air, the magnetic harpoon fired and sailed through the air, anchoring itself to the hull just above one of the exterior doors. After a moment the line went taut, the airship matching the speed of its target. Pulley-hook in hand, Cordell stepped up to the line and took a deep breath. There would be no turning back after this.

"... I must be outta me damned mind." She muttered. A few moments later she was sailing through the tumultuous air, speeding down the long metal cable as snow whipped across her face. The landing was rough; the boat's hull came up quicker than she'd thought, having to squint just to keep her eyes open in the storm, and as a result she didn't have nearly so much time or space to slow down as she would've preferred. Cordell hit the wall in a crouch, letting her legs absorb the impact before letting go and dropping onto the narrow, ice-slicked exterior walkway. Oh, she'd feel that come morning. Quickly picking herself up, she signaled her arrival and Delahaye deactivated the harpoon's magnet, reeling it back in before veering away from the impending Dust-weather.

"Okay," Braving the elements just a bit longer, Cordell pulsed her Semblance to make sure no one was waiting on the other side of the door, then pulled it open and made her way inside. "Belly o' th' beast time."

'It's Mrs thank you very much Captain and I'm running this show.' Rachael began clearly offended more by the assumption she wasn't in charge than the more subtle accusation of her being a face for a shadowy conspiracy, at least the latter sounded cool. 'A work colleague pointed me towards you but after that this endeavour has been mine since it's inception. The militarisation of Atlas is something that all free thinking people of Remnant fear and of course free brings the Grimm. It is for the best of all that Atlas isn't able to start another Grey War while the other kingdoms bicker amongst themselves.' Rachael continued, venom and genuine hatred dripping off her rushed words as she gave her not entirely historically accurate speel. The line was quite for a long awkward moment before Rachael spoke again. 'Apologises Captain that was unprofessional, I'm sure you have dealt with many unscrupulous individuals in the past and therefore it is understand, expected even that you show hesitation.' Rachael admonished herself coming as close as you can to bowing in apology in a purely audio conversation.

After another deep breath and another long awkard pause Rachael continued back to her previous cheerful-but-not-too-cheerful-tone. 'The island isn't a secret ... technically... its just new. I have another work colleague holds a significant position within Lexkvar Industries who have recently constructed the facility, it will be fully functional in a week I just thought it would be good to meet in a place out of the way both geographically and from me individually. Don't worry however, any evidence of you being here has already been removed.

'As for what you are securing my contact wasn't very clear so I'm afraid I can't be either, it could be anything to a toxin as you mentioned or the entire ship. Although I hope it isn't the ship because that would make the sematics I gave you useless and those things aren't eas....' Rachael will continue to ramble on about the difficulties in getting contracts with Atlas military technology given how tightly they hold their IPs until interrupted.

-----------------------------(Feel free to continue talking it will just happen retroactively----

Landing hard Cornell deciding to take the apparent lesser of two risks and remain outside for a few crucial moments more to ensure the doorway was clear. This exposed the pirate captain to a few stray fillings even if she tried to get as close to the door as possible. Pulsing her semblance Cornell quickly found out that her sematics she had been given were wrong. There was far more electronics running through this vessel and it seemed like almost everything was automated. Even the doors opened as Cornell approached although luckily for her nothing was waiting for the captain on the other side. Rumblings and shoutings could be heard inside and outside the ship, the rain made it hard to make out exactly what was being said as well as how many voices were talking. Cornell's semblance did pick up several robot coming out of the wall and rushing not towards Cornell but past her to clean up the mess that the harpoon left with claws and sharp blades.

Soon Cornell found herself in a cold but well lit metallic corridor alone as the robots folding back into the wall unless the pirate captain intervened. If it wasn't for the chaos outside it could even be calming but as the ship's hull became under attack from the storm again a series of tremors shook Cornell heavily. A lone voice could be heard in front of her perhaps a few rooms away; male, young and he was talking into the on board communication systems, it was clearly starting to experience trouble. The boys voice got louder and louder as it became clearer and clearer that his message was getting garbled.

Earlier Conversation

'Might be best not to poke the Ursa here...' Cordell thought to herself, both surprised and bemused by Mrs. Rachel's sudden shift in tone. She could reasonably accept that there were people keeping an eye out for potential trouble from Atlas, but the idea that it was just a loose confederation of 'concerned citizens' without some sort of powerful organization or individual backing them seemed... exceptionally unlikely. A school PTA this wasn't, and Cordell would keep her skepticism high until proven otherwise.

"Okay, okay, no offense meant... boss." It made sense to throw Rachael a bone and play along with the idea that she was the VIP, even though the behavior of the bodyguards earlier certainly didn't suggest that. In any case, Rachael was Cordell's contact and so, technically, the one giving orders. "Believe me, I'm with ya -- another war could tear Remnant apart, an' that ain't good fer anybody long-term."

So, even Rachael didn't know what Cordell was being sent in after... that had all sorts of implications, to be sure. The pirate leaned back in her chair as she considered it. "So, once I'm on board, priority one -- besides not gettin' caught -- is info gatherin'. Gotcha." Rachael may or may not have been part of a spy organization, but this certainly had all the characteristics of a spy mission. The captain tried to mentally run through the sort of scenarios that would prompt something like this, using what she knew of the Atlas military's structure to make inferences where she could. "To recap... Atlas is workin' on somethin' weapons-related. Ye don't know what exactly, but th' threat be serious enough t' hire on a freelancer with a history o' dangerous jobs. That much I got. It also suggests that even if'n ye don't know what th' threat is, someone yer in touch with does, but that person ain't been able t' tell ye. Ye got a mole -- sorry, concerned citizen -- on th' inside, aye? Any chance o' me runnin' into 'em? Could be helpful t' get with someone who knows what's what."

Oh, how quickly she was coming to hate this Dust storm. The pings of activated Dust filings against her Aura weren't so bad -- she'd had worse hits from backfiring engine components, truthfully -- but the rocking and churning of the boat were far from pleasant. The automated door, and the robots that followed, put her just as ill-at-ease as the fact that Rachael's schematics seemed to be off, or at least outdated. Still she took it in stride as best she could.

'Okay, so... automated repair bots. Wonder what else they're programmed for?' She thought to herself, having drawn one pistol just to be sure as the robots went past her to their work. If the bots handled exterior maintenance as well as internal then sailing into this storm ought to set off the lot of 'em... unless they were programmed to ignore it until later, or something to that effect. She tucked that observation away in the part of her mind that was still working to make sense of the situation and focused on moving forward.

Doing her best to keep balance as the ship rocked and swayed, the rain-drenched pirate quietly and warily made her way towards the muffled voice, donning her hat as she did so and making sure to give the wall-mounted bots as wide a berth as reasonably possible. She needed to know more before making her next move... staying out of sight and listening in seemed like a good start.

Clearly content with the bone Cornell through her Rachael continued. 'I'm sorry captain but there won't be any friendly soul on board, my friend is strictly r&d and infiltrating the Atlas Academy is something I can imagine anyone doing. Although we have managed to do something to help you with any security on board, the computer systems should read you as a Captain, felt the rank was appropriate' Seeming unaware that her description of her 'contact' has changed to 'friend' Rachael did seem genuinely apologetic she wasn't more helpful. 'Once the storm passes we can reestablish contact and work out how to move on with what the package exactly is.

The bots completely ignored Cornell as she made her way through the hull, finding her sea legs quickly progress was quick and the source of the noise became clear. A young man stood over a series of controls rushing between console to console, something was clearly wrong with the ship. Cornell could hear a one sided conversation between the young man and the rest of the people on board.

'The engine is holding together but she is struggling, I'm not sure if we should move the ship around much to try to keep the engine as stable as possible. The stabilizers also seem to be playing up, I can try to keep us upright manually but it means we will have to keep someone down here unless people want to try swimming to our objective.’

’In theory the ships droids should take care of major breaches they just need time. That might not be a luxury we can afford, even if you can’t wield the hull close yourself simply halting the influx of water would be greatly appreciated. I would advise Aurum and yourself to meet up, there seems to be something playing up with the systems and we can’t afford for everyone to be separated. The internal scanners also seem to be playing up unless one of you are trying to sneak up on me.’

Clearly focused on whatever his task was Cornell would have to make serious noise to disturb the young man. Although it was also clear that the ship wasn't doing take well in the storm.
No criticism is too harsh so hit me with your best shot.

(OOC: Apologies for the long-delayed response. Should we be looking to merge the two threads soon, out of curiosity?)

Listening intently, the hidden pirate was quickly putting together the basic gist of things. Whoever was running this ship was no more pleased with this "weather" than she was, and the use of the word 'objective' was a strong suggestion that whomever's ship she was on were just as much outsiders interested in this site as she was. Even more interesting, the clipped tones and measured speech bore a certain suggestion of origin... a casual listener may not have picked up on it, but Cordell had been immersed in Atlas' military culture enough from an early age to recognize certain subtle influences -- hell, half the reason she'd adopted her over-the-top pirate accent in the first place was to mask her own Atlesian traits. So, that confirmed Rachael's intel that this ship was Atlas Academy connected... and it wasn't just a pilot and bots either, but a whole team. No way to know how many...

Finding a good tuck-away that was at least partially out of sight -- and allowed her to brace against the violent rocking, swaying, and jolting -- the privateer kept listening in. Before too long there were footsteps coming her way; doing her best to stay concealed, she absorbed the conversation that followed. Things were not going well... a fact made all the clearer when a moment of sudden blackness and eerie near-silence gave way to the dim scarlet glow of emergency lights. Shit! The crew were already talking about abandoning ship, but having seen the tempest out there she feared for their chances. Was there any chance of pulling this tug through? Clenching her teeth, she fought for focus as the world around her began to roll sideways, pulsing her Semblance out as much as she dared to try and get an accurate picture of the ship's state. In her mind's eye she could see . . .

The electrical grid splayed out like frayed bundles of dim gold-white hair, the remnants of their energy cooling at broken ends. The radiant skeletons of repair bots were either dormant in their alcoves or shattered in the churning waters, and the ship's own beacons and broadcasters were a faded glow like blown-out candle wicks. Her ethereal gaze searched, mind trying to find something she could restart, something she could divert, something, something... but there was nothing.

Cordell's eyes shot open. Even if she had hours she wasn't sure she could jolt this tug back to life, and hours were something she most definitely didn't have. She'd boarded this ship on hopes it would carry her through the storm, but now it was going down. Everyone on board was in danger, herself included. And she didn't know enough about the layout to even know where the life rafts were.

Ye gawds, she hoped there actually were life rafts.

Her best bet was to follow these two, but quietly. She wouldn't get anywhere but killed rushing out into the labyrinth of the ship's corridors -- she'd hold back for now and only reveal herself if she had to. This... this was gonna be close.

'Atlas Academy'. The words had jumped out at Cordell as though they'd been made of lightning. The school was tied up in this? There would be academy personnel on board that boat, then. That... was a huge risk. Huge[/b]. The sort of thing Rachael really ought to have mentioned at the outset. Cordell's only reaction was a faint sigh, however -- she was already too deep into this to just walk away, regardless of her bargaining posture with Mrs. Responsibly Mysterious. The change from 'contact' to 'friend' didn't skip the pirate's radar either, but at this point she didn't have enough context to make the information useful. She filed her new discoveries away for later.

Given the Red Corsair's speed, the window for conversation was rapidly closing. Already the channel was beginning to garble with static. "Well, I do appreciate th' 'command honors' -- with luck, might even come in handy. Not much time left before signal's lost so... just..." She leaned forward, putting on a sincere and slightly concerned face. "... Don't screw me over here, k? I may not trust ye, but ye seem like good people, an' that's rare in me line o' work." It was a shameless play for sympathy, true, but there was nothing malicious behind the attempt to tug Rachael's heart string a tad. Switching over to a soft smile, Cordell gave a mock salute. "Right, time's almost up. Wish me luck, Secret Agent Rachael!" The playful jab was accompanied by a mischievous wink.

What, oh what, had she just gotten herself into...?
