Professor Feltch Hatterly
« on: September 15, 2016, 09:06:24 PM »
CHARACTER

Name: Feltch Hatterly

Age: 57, 12th of Saaral

Species and Gender: Human Male

Symbol: He never was that pretentious of a lawyer, so he has none.

Themes: Rockin' in the Free World-Neil Young,Blue Collar Man-Styx

Occupation: Criminal and International Law Professor at Beacon Academy, Practicing Lawyer when there’s a potential client he feels needs his attention.

Appearance: Feltch is a stocky man, and a bit out of shape even for someone of his build. At 5’5” and about 190lbs, he’s no distance runner or ideal male physique. His job never required him to be. He does exercise though, and puts himself through his old boxing paces regularly enough that he has a decent level of stamina and muscle mass underneath the fat. He has a fleshy, friendly face, full of expression easily relayed by his wide mouth and high, round cheeks. Feltch’s complexion, while often red from exertion, is a healthy one, and he gives the impression of being a clean, well-kept man, with his small black mustache clipped tidily and his conservative, swept to the side dark hair kept to a reasonable length and out of his face. His eyes are small and brown, but often twinkling, and accent his trademark pleasant, lips-closed smile.

His sense of fashion is a little outdated, as he’s rarely seen without his cane and some form of bowler hat. A love for smoking, naturally done out of doors so as not to bother the other staff or students, keeps a premium cigar either clenched in his teeth or close at hand. He has a magnificent wardrobe of dark suits which he couples with some standard oxford shoes of the appropriate color, a silk tie or bowtie, and an ornate paisley vest to match. While on the job or out on business he has a black leather briefcase with brass corners, lock, and handle, where he keeps important papers, some drinking glasses, and a small bottle of brandy. A simple waterproof lining on the interior compartments keeps the papers safe in the event of any damage to the bottle.

Feltch’s voice is an entertaining one, to say the least. When he’s being personable, friendly, or intimate, it’s smooth, easy on the ears, and relaxing, with a conspiratorial tone to it. It’s something that has always helped him put people at ease in difficult situations, or reach out and grab someone’s attention without bruising their ears. Flipping the coin over, should he desire to be loud, abrasive, or antagonistic, he simply turns up the volume. His voice sounds like it’s banging against his windpipes, constricted by the lack of space, and caterwauls around the room knocking over curtains and scattering newspapers. Playing both angles at the proper times in the courtroom is just one of the reason’s he’s a demon to deal with on the witness stand.

History: He actually started out in Atlas, spending his childhood there moving from place to place with the rest of his large, grubby, lower-class family. As usual, work was hard to find for the uneducated, and the most menial tasks were the ones he was familiar with growing up. It also brought him close to the faunus and other undesirables of the local populace, and with that contact he developed an appreciation and respect for the downtrodden and abused. A strong lad, he was regularly in fights for those same reasons, and with his father backing him up and raising him to abide no wrongdoing, this didn’t change as he aged. What did emerge, when the family made the switch to Vale in hopes for an easier way of life, was a love of books and learning. Once he learned to read, every hour he wasn’t asleep or laboring to keep bread on the table was spent at any library who would let him in.

Having experienced the abuse of power and injustice firsthand, he searched hard for methods of halting it that were more lasting than a right to the jaw. It took years, and countless sleepless nights, but he did not relent and piece by exhaustively researched piece, he taught himself everything he needed to be accepted into law school.  Even then, he didn’t have the finances to cover the costs, and of course couldn’t get any kind of approval for a loan. A mix of scholarships and his introduction to professional boxing managed to let him squeak by on the skin of his teeth, and he graduated at the top of his class with everyone expecting great things from him in the courtroom and financially.

Feltch instantly started going the exact opposite direction the moment his diploma was in hand. He got his start doing low-profit work for the unjustly accused among faunus populations, and once he’d made enough of a name for himself, he went after people well-known for their racism, greed, and oppression. Even early on, companies like the Schnee Dust Corporation learned to rue the day he walked into a courtroom, and as he gained experience and renown his enemies became more vocal and violent. It became necessary for him to go armed, especially as his connections to already well-known “troublemakers” blossomed. In particular, Arturo Chanson often provided funding and other resources during protracted legal struggles, even putting his skills as a financial analyst to use on the witness stand on multiple occasions.

The longer he practiced law the more and more he came across cases involving Hunters. The sheer amount of legal ramifications that career carried with it was staggering, and he saw several good men and women with lives ruined or even spent behind bars due to poor decision making and ignorance of the law. His legal practice, which by now had been established to the point where it could run itself under the guidance of a few subordinates, continued on its work in the defense of the less than fortunate. Feltch’s own career switched tracks then, and he began to work on behalf of Hunters caught in complex legal situations, helping them sort through things and stay on top of the situation. As usual, he did a lot of good, and earned himself a few friends along the way. One of his clients was a younger Seigfried Rosenrot, dealing with the PR and legal fallout from the first use of his barely controllable and undeniably dangerous semblance. His name was back in the news and kept its renown, but took on a decidedly less unsavory and lambasted nature, even with his old enemies trying to paint his new work in an uncharitable light.

He weathered these insults to his character the way he’d weathered everything else in his life. It was of no consequence, and Feltch would keep right on doing whatever needed to be done, damning whatever everyone else had to say against it. In this case, it soon became clear that he was simply playing housemaid to an entire profession, and that for every mess he helped clean up, another would always rise to take its place. There was a better solution, he felt, and that was education. Within a month he had put together some trial curriculum plans and broached the subject at a few friendly lunches with Beacon’s headmaster. Shortly after that, he was installed as the institution’s International and Criminal Law Professor, and for several years now he has been ensuring that each new generation of Hunters and Huntresses is adequately prepared for the legal aspect of the job.

As one of the few Professors at Beacon who has not been a Hunter at some point in his life, he has done exceptionally well in handling the student body and commanding their respect. He’s known as a harsh task-master, and his oral exams have been the source of countless stress-induced breakdowns. For all that, he still is undeniably there for those in his charge, and the pass/fail rate for his classes is roughly average. Feltch’s office hours are extensive, and he’s not opposed to being pulled aside for a question should you bump into him in the hallway. Just expect to work when he tells you to.

Personality: Professionally, he is any opposition’s worst nightmare. Clever, resourceful, and always carrying multiple aces up his sleeves, Feltch pulls no punches in the courtroom and will tear any hole in a testimony or argument wide open with practiced ease. It’s very easy for him to alternate between being personable and a royal terror, and he’ll do generally whatever he has to in order to break someone down. The act, if you could call it that, has become so natural that even though it’s expected and well known among his peers, they always have trouble countering or even seeing it coming.

Among his pupils, he’s businesslike, swift, and to the point. He rarely wastes time on frivolities, and ploughs right on ahead through the planned material, expressing his points with articulation, attention to detail, and an excellent look at the big picture. He has a passion for his subject, and he does his best to pass that on to those learning from him, and usually succeeds in some way, even if it’s only getting them to pass and know enough to get by. He doesn’t abide laziness, and will happily rake you over the coals for choosing that road, showing no mercy until you repent.

Outside of work, he’s highly sociable, outgoing, and a brilliant conversationalist. Always ready with an excellent story, or in the right company, a slightly bawdy joke, you can find him where the crowd is thickest. His ability to mingle assures him a place at any sort of table, high or low, and as long as the company is good he’ll be happy whatever the surroundings and circumstances. He makes friends easily, and people find it harmless to confide him, which makes it a very good thing that he’s absolutely trustworthy and reliable. Those who’ve made a tried and true friend of Feltch Hatterly have made one for life, and fate willing, he’ll never let you down.

Romantically, he’s a rascal and a charmer, but still a gentleman for all that. He just has had so little time for it due to his busy work schedule that he’s only bothered to be serious about things since coming to Beacon. He feels he’s out of practice, but, the truth is, he’s just as rogueish as ever, even if time has put a few pounds on his frame.

Aura and Semblance: Feltch has no idea what his semblance is, although he does know how to activate his aura to shield and heal himself.

Combat Behavior: He’s actually a fairly capable combatant, and can keep pace with your standard policeman. Familiar with marksmanship, fighting with a cane, and not too shabby with good ‘ole fisticuffs due to his experience as a boxer, he’s better at martial affairs than you’d expect him to be. Still, he’s no soldier, and much less a Hunter, and while he’s got courage and determination to spare he knows when to stand back and let the professionals do the heavy lifting. When push does come to shove, Feltch is light on his feet, decisive, and calculating. He’s very adept at keeping his opponents off balance and off their guard, with his behavior or his mouth, and he’s not afraid to take a punch to get a better one in himself.

WEAPON A razor sharp wit and adept tongue. Also a .45 caliber pistol with a magazine which holds 15 explosive armor piercing rounds. He keeps two spare mags at varying places on his person at all times, and conceals the firearm under his vest. He’s pretty vicious with his cane, too.

Oh, we message for these now? Sorry, my last one just was reviewed by the qualified people without a notice. Oh well, it's probably something I missed in a rules update with the forum change. Bug the Good Doctor I shall, then.

100% reviews are back, baby. Should also add that I am still ignorant of the teacher situation so this may not ultimately result in a +1 just yet.

Extra "I".

Remove comma.

So are the papers held in their own separate compartment with the water-proof lining, or is the bottle of brandy located in its own compartment with water-proof lining.

Combed through every bit of it and this is what I got: Just a bunch of commas. Heck, some of them might not even be right for all I know. Well then, so much for that.

Thank you for catching some odd things, but on the whole I'm really confused why you wanted so many commas gone. I didn't actually remove a large portion of them because they'd have made lengthy sentences where I wanted something choppy, or taken away the flow of things. I'm not really understanding this review...

Review is 100% or Full meaning that I will bite at basically anything I find questionable, and that includes grammar, punctuation, and all that jazz, not just ideas and balance (what I used to do before I started becoming more busy and lenient).

The fact that there is no substance to the review means there was nothing questionable to bring up, simple as that, so it turned into just a giant list of commas errors that, as I said at the end of the review, are probably/likely wrong due to a gap in my understanding of comma usage (I peeked at Vox's PC and he does what you do so clearly I've fucked up somewhere in my understanding of things).

You're a dork. I like you.

And thanks for the review, you did actually catch some boneheaded errors, like the accidental "desirables" sarcasm.

+1. Next reviewer will have to be a higher-up or someone with admin backing.

And it took a single look a diffcheck to realize I finally caught on to "piece by exhaustively researched piece" GAH
