Characters from all walks of life are soon going toe-to-toe in the upcoming Vytal Festival. The event is nothing to sneeze at, featuring the best and brightest out of the upcoming generation of hunters and huntresses. So, why does your character want to win the Vytal Festival? What's motivating them to beat up (or let themselves get beat up by) their peers on international television? The fame, the glory, the fangirls... or something else?
Even if your character isn't a student - why are they entering, and what are they attempting to prove?

I want to win so people will think the tourney is rigged twice In a row Malina wants to win because winning a huntsman bracket tourney would be something incrediy impressive since there's no real standard level of experience, Aca wants to win because RWND has to do something meaningful on the site I guess.

Despite not competing this year because I wanted to use a different character Gray wants to win to make up for the embarrassment of last tournament where he was knocked out in the first round and barely touched his opponent.
Sandy doesn’t necessarily want to win as much as see how far he can go. Winning would be even better though.
Ceramites is looking to test himself against other huntsman and shake off the rust a bit.

So, Smokey's primary purpose for entering the Vytal Festival is not for the sake of competition. I mean, winning the tournament would be great, but he primarily wants to demonstrate his-- shall we say-- unique skill-set to the world. He's hoping to get a prime opportunity to show the power of the Good News in order to attract Big Game jobs with high price tags. That being said, he'll still be looking to win. He won't be whipping out his big gun unless he's given a very good reason to.
Aurelia, on the other hand, is in it mostly for the sake of competition, pride, and prestige. If she can win, especially starting without her semblance active, it'll be a huge high point of her career. That being said, she has an ulterior motive. If she wins, she hopes that will be enough to convince her foster family to let her see her adopted sister more often.

Catalina wants to win and go on to fight Zabar Aga, who beat Nathan Eau in the finale of the last tournament, who in turn beat Cat in the quarterfinals, for Nathan. To quote Nathan:
In context, in-character? Not really.
OOC? One of the runner-ups to the runner-up wants to more or less take revenge (to some extent) for the runner-up. Already, we're nearing anime levels of comedic plot convolutions.
Infared wants to show how a some tropes can be used without being exploited, while exploiting other's attempts.
Siu wants to win the tournament because she wants to prove her cooked up anti- melee strats works even on a huntsman's level.

Half a test of his own skill on one of the best stages of talent Remnant has to offer, half a desire to prove that there's a will behind the words he speaks, Setsuna simply wants to win. Not to claim the title of 41st Vytal Tournament Champion or to lord it over his fellow students, but to show the world that the next generation is in good hands. Though if he does fall in battle, he'll take it graciously and with no complaint whatsoever.
With the 1v1 format suiting Kei far more than team combat, it's a good chance to take on other people he hasn't faced before (though it's literally only 1 person). Winning isn't incredibly important in his eyes--it's simply a glorified spar with a student.

Juno’s desire to win stems from how close he got to victory in the previous tournament. He knows he was strong enough back then to take the whole thing, and he has only gotten stronger since. Status and the perks of being a champ are far less important than validating his strength and letting him know that all the bullshit he went through since last tournament was “worth it” in the sense that what doesn’t kill you, your girlfriend, your best friend, or your entire team makes you stronger.

It is less that Michael wants to win, more so he wants to stop losing all the damn time. He's been on the losing end of so many battles that he wants to prove that he can at least win one when it counts. He doesn't even care if he makes it to the finals. He just wants to win one match.

Out of character I have only had bad experiences with these types of fights, I don't ever feel like I can properly describe what my character is doing and I get frustrated over silly things like numbers. As such I've tried to strip as much of it I can from the threads I run but I do feel it's something I should get better at and as such will continue to attempt them.
Saffron as with most things concerning my characters is the most earnest in her reasons for competing. Under no impressions that large swathes of the Atlas population will suddenly change their opinion on faunus simply because she performs well in these matches it will never the less provide a powerful message to the other kingdoms about unity at least in Saffron's own eyes.
Almost the opposite Calen seeks only to prove his own personal superiority over everyone else in competition. His whole 'fight defensively so your enemy shows their entire strength before you destroy them might play out a bit strangely with two range focused opponents but we will see.
Ramalia would have used the situation as a learning experience and to experience everything the world of Remnant has to offer.

Sean mostly signed up as a chance to see a bit of the world beyond Vacuo. He's not especially set on winning, as he knows that the fame from just simply participating is likely to open up some new opportunities for him. That said, he is a showoff and doesn't much like the idea of being upstaged, so... expect fireworks!
As for Budonoki, he's not really participating in the Huntsmen Bracket with winning in mind. He sees it more as an opportunity to stress-test the Vine, and by extension himself. Competition isn't really in his nature, but as a Huntsman he certainly understand the usefulness of it as a tool for self-improvement.

Razzy likes putting on a show. He loves entertaining as many people as he can, and the Vytal festival lets him reach the biggest audiance possible. Plus, last year's tournament was super fun for him - he'd love to go at it again and meet more cool fighters.
Coconut has always seen being a huntsman as something cool and exciting, idolizing the proffession as well as the most prominent huntsmen out there. He knew he wanted to get in the tourney before he even enrolled in Beacon, having closely followed the last tournament. The fact that he's up against last year's semi-finalist right away only makes him that much more excited. Plus - if he does well in the tournament, fangirls are pi[bound[/i] to flock to him.
Rufus isn't going into the tournament to win, despite his usual bravado. He knows he's not the best fighter at Beacon - but he also knows he needs to get much better to beat his father. He wants to figure out exactly how he needs to improve, even if that means taking a few beatings.
Reggie went into the tourney alongside Shiroe because he's certain he'd win - at least outwardly. He also knows that his father will be watching the tournament, so doing well in it is his shot at redemption in his eyes.

At this point, I might as well throw my own characters into the ring.
Prism's entire thematic revolves around beating the odds. She wants to see just how far she can carry herself with her skills and an iron backbone, and the Vytal tournament is the perfect place to do that, where she'll be pitted against the best and the brightest. Prism's also taking part in the 4v4 matchup of Casanova vs. Blossom, where she's not afraid to admit they're up against tough opponents - but she still has high hopes. Her team succeeded in a initiation when she was rendered useless thanks to a Nevermore and the other team member was unconscious, and she's all seen them continue to grow since then - if she can lead Casanova to victory, it won't only prove their synergy as a team, but also that they're just as effective as she wants them to be.
Jima's been in a bit of a flunk recently, and has lost confidence in her own combat skills. She wants to gauge the limits of her abilities both physically and stategically, especially since she doesn't have the advantages offensive semblance. No place is better than to try that out than on the tournament floor, thrown up against who-knows-what.
