For you the writer specifically what made you decide not to make a student character?

I wanted someone alittle different from what I thought would be the default choice for a RWBY character, because usually I would choose that to fit in or to go with my standard builds.  That's also why I wanted him to have an armor type weapon since I'm more of a katana man.... even though I did cheat alittle with its second form.  I was also thinking of how hard and interesting, it would be for a person without the benefits of being a student would be and trying to prove that anyone can be a hunter if they put their minds to it.
