Title: Huntsmen and huntresses, what's your landing strategy?
Post by: Vision on August 06, 2017, 05:49:04 PM
I've posted a few of these in the past but for those who haven't seen them this is an AMA thread where the question is specific to the thread, so we can see how different people respond to the same question.

Calen shrugs before remarking dismissively. 'I just stop falling.'

Saffron on the other hand takes a few moments to formulate her response. 'Depends on the situation, if I'm falling close to an enemy I'll often take the fall to power up my semblance. It's hell on the knees but it can really help me get on the front foot in less conventional matches. In standard air drops however Atlas usually outfits us with these chutes, I won't go into details 'if I told you I would have to kill you ect ect' but they are our standard landing procedure. Of course although I consider myself a trusting girl every one needs a backup plan and mine is wind dust. Although most of what it does is swap knee pain for shoulder pain it also quietens the landing useful for stealth missions and leaves your legs fresh to run to cover when Aurum decides such missions are the best times to set off his little pranks.'

"Hm... I guess it really depends on the situation! Usually I try and use Rozhe Orchideya to swing from branch to branch, if I'm landing in a forest, or try and grab a ledge if it's in a town or something. It's not really much! I've seen way cooler landing strategies!"

"My landings tend to be more like crashes. The D's and my armor tend to keep me from sustaining any major damage, though I tend to leave a hole behind."

"Oh, it's simple. I activate my semblance. As unpredictable as it may be, it does slow my fall down. And, if some fool decides to meet me below, they'll undoubtedly be knocked back!"

"I shout down from the top of my lungs, no need for chute's, dust or no guns, slow down my momentum, and if someone's below, I fuckin' wreck 'em."

"I ain't exactly great at those, to be honest with ya. I try to land on the highest thing I can find, though there ain't nothin', I'm in quite a damn pickle."

Catalina have not thought of this one that thoroughly: I uh, just bring a parachute? Alternatively I just form one with my semblance? I haven't tested that. if that didn't work I still have this idea I just thought of...
Infrared however is confident on this one. I think what would happen in a standard airdrop should be obvious. But if I need to land without help, I can use my semblance. Would hurt much more and consume more aura but makes no noise.

Gray (Pre-trauma as post trauma wouldn't answer) smiles sheepishly.  " I don't really have one. I guess I just try to grab something and hope that thing doesn't break when I grab it."

"I use my semblance to carry me down."

"I create a clone on the ground to catch me usually. or I can use Takif's halberd form as a brace by slamming it into the ground first and catching myself on it."

Fallow pulls out his Russet Grimoire and indicates to it.  "Various."

"Well. Currently I either catch my wings on something or go to scythe mode to swing around. If I have nothing to swing off I can at least slow myself down by blasting downwards with kinetic dust. Also I am working on a modification which will mean I won't need to use either of those again. I'm installing jets inside my wings so that I can actually fly with them. So far all that I have achieved is blowing them up and having to replace blades of them. But I haven't given up on them yet!

"If ya saw my fighting style ya could probably guess my landing strategy pretty easily. I have grappling hooks so I swing around until I'm slow enough for the landing to not hurt too bad. Also my aura is pretty strong so if I need to stop immediately and can't swing around I can usually tank the landing. Hurts like a bitch though."

[color=#8000030] "Would you believe that I actually don't have one? My plan is to stay on the ground if at all possible."

"Landing strategy? Hmm... it depends. I'd have to consider the surroundings. Trees can be used to break a long fall pretty easily, but if there's no significant foliage I suppose I'd be forced to rely on a 'drop and roll' approach, maybe use my shields to absorb some of the impact. Worst case I guess I could use my Semblance . . . actually, that's probably a bad idea."

"I ain't no Huntress, mate, but if'n it be a smart landin' ye be askin' after ye couldn't rightly expect anyone t' be better'n an airship pirate. I mean, it literally be a required skill o' th' job! Now, what'cha gotta do is make sure yer equipment be up t' th' task -- an I don't mean no sissy stuff like a parachute. Zip lines an' tethers, landie, that's th' ticket. Whether it be yer standard grapplin' hook, a harpoon gun, or one'a me right marvelous Zephyr Cutlasses, what ye be needin' boils down to a strong line an' a quick mechanical winch. Gravity or momentum be sendin' ye one way? Set yer line t' a firm anchor an' swing t' safety -- easy as that! Good fer boardin' airships an' gettin' out of trouble, too... just be sure t' practice, an' don't miss!"

"I just slow down and land, really. Not much to think about when you have a jump pack. That, or I nuke the ground."

"I manipulate the local gravity to slow myself down before landing."

"If there are trees or other outcroppings about, I'll try and wrap my chains around 'em to swing my way to a decent speed. If I'm falling too fast or there're no outcroppings, I'll take a few Kinetic capsules into knives and point them upwards before detonating, hoping to not rip my arms off in the process."

"If I'm poor (like right now), I'll try and swing my hammer at whatever hard object there is on the way down to slow myself. If I'm not poor, I'll just shoot my minigun at max power right into the ground."

"I'll stab a tree to slow myself down."

"I'll attempt to plant my sword into something to decelerate."

"Wait, you need a strategy to land?"

"I'll surf my way down! And maybe slide off, if I don't concentrate enough."

The rest aren't fleshed out enough to be at that point.

"Waveriding my shield works pretty well when you're falling through shrubbery. If not, the daggers on my shield make for pretty good makeshift climbing picks. Arms hurt like hell when doing that, however...If not for aura, I think my arms would have fallen off by now."

"Uh, I don't have anything to actually help me land, so, I try and avoid jumping from places too high. If I have to, though, I'm not going anywhere without some sort of parachute."

Tieren shrugs nonchalantly. "I stomp on any poor sod underneath me."

"Surveying the surroundings normally works. You'd be surprised how many ways there are to leave a floating airship without jumping more than four feet. If there are no other ways down, choosing your landing spot is crucial. And if I managed to mess those up as well, time to experiment with my semblance."

"Shooting my rocket launcher normally works, if I'm far enough from the ground, 'cuz the recoil slows me down. Being too close, however, results in a bruised aura, legs that feel like they've been dislocated by the rack, and unintentional rocket jumping. Can't say the latter isn't fun, however!"

"God dammit Beacon why isn't a jetpack legal?"
