Title: Mysterious Migrations of Mountain Glenn
Post by: MonsterManic on January 22, 2018, 05:26:58 PM
MISSION DETAILS:

The area around Mountain Glenn has always been a perilous one. Grimm are constantly gathering around the area for reasons yet unknown, while the area itself is desolate, ruined and bleak, a reminder that even the most powerful of settlements falls to the Grimm. The underground is no different; non-active train tracks lead directly to Vale, sealed behind the thickest of bulkhead walls that even a Goliath would find hard to break down. The reason mainly attributed to the fall of such a heavily defended area is the lack of natural defences that Vale boasts; it is that same reason that Grimm find easy access to the surrounding areas.

Around a week ago, Hunters sent to cull the numbers of Grimm reported seeing new species of Grimm, believed to not be native to Mountain Glenn. In addition, said Grimm have been migrating to the area en masse, harassing any unprepared Hunters sent to deal with the threat. Casualty rates have risen to unforeseen amounts, enough to warrant an immediate, decisive response from a small strike team.

Selected members of this strike force will be landing just outside the ruined city's borders at the break of dawn, accompanied by a fully trained and capable Huntsman. They will then be proceeding on foot to locate, if any, the source of this strange phenomenon. If any source is found, their objective will be to destroy said source--if none is found, the strike force is to retreat to a safe location for a Bullhead to evacuate them safely. In light of the risk of this mission, the transport provided is a heavily armed Dropship, which is licensed to carry out strafing runs if necessary.

MISSION OBJECTIVES:
-Deploy to mission location and investigate
-Destroy source of migration, if possible

While waking up before the crack of dawn to board a dropship bound for one of the most dangerous areas in Vale was not on Ferus's wishlist, he was quite certain that whatever he felt, the others felt much, much worse. Put him in any one of the student's shoes and he would probably be asleep. Alas, that was not to be for his mind was methodically going through years of protocol, drilled into his mind by teachers before him.

Put before him was a mission unlike any he had undertaken, in addition to his first with Beacon students. They were not to be underestimated, for sure--one of the students picked was a Vytal Festival finalist--while two 3rd year members rounded out the team with their advanced wisdom over the other 1st years. Still, one could not make too many preparations when Grimm were in the equation.

As the familiar skyline of the ruined city came into view and the comforting rays of light peeked over the horizon, the Huntsman turned to wake any lucky soul who had managed to claim a few precious moments of sleep. A long day was ahead of them all, and sleep would soon just be a memory...

Watching through one of the airship's windows, Suntalia lightly hummed to herself happily as she did every morning. However, despite the happy demeanor she had on, deep within her, a slight chill was creeping as she had heard the rumors and knew extensively that Mountain Glenn was one of the few places that any sane person would want to avoid. Add on top of that the idea of strange Grimm appearing in the abandoned terrain and it did little to soothe her nerves. Mustn't show any fear though...for the sake of my little juniors here she thought, continuing her humming.

Turning her eyes to Professor Ferus, Suntalia smiled broadly as he began to make his way around to make sure everyone was awake. Leaving it to her to not show concern for whether the others were asleep or not, she jumped up from her seat. "WAKEY WAKEY! EGGS AND BACEY!" she cried out happily for all to hear. Smiling happily, she turned her attention to her gear to make sure everything was in order. With her chain shirt in place and her clothing infused with dust for added protection, she pulled out Firestorm and extended it to its full length to make sure everything was in order. Satisfied with it, she transformed it back and harnessed it before pulling out Dynami and Areti to inspect them next. Checking the barrel as well as the sight to make sure everything was aligned, she pulled out the magazine and inspected the rounds. She had been meticulous the day prior to create a few extra magazines so that she would have extra should their stay there be prolonged.

Satisfied with her weapons, Suntalia looked into her pack to see that she had everything needed. First aid kit, ten extra magazines for both Dynami and Areti, extra dust crystals for Firestorm, small snacks for the road... Humming quietly to herself as she continued to check off each item from her list of things. Having finished her checklist, she turned her attention back to the window and then to her comrades on this mission. Being the social animal that she was, she already had become acquainted with both Nathan and Gwylan. However, she was not quite acquainted with the other third year with them. "Best time to get to know him is now" she whispered happily to herself as she skipped over to where Mogan was. "Hi! I'm Suntalia! You can call me Talia for short. It's what my friends call me and you're officially now one of my friends!" she exclaimed happily. "What's your name? How old are you? What made you come to Beacon? Why'd you choose to come on this mission? Do you have a favorite food? What about your favorite color? How are you liking Beacon so far? Are you a good fighter?" she asked excitedly. As a myriad of questions continued to loom in her mind, she quickly switched gears and turned her attention to Nathan. "Are you awake Nathan?" she all but yelled at the first year. "Best answer quickly or I'll give you a 'shocking' awakening" she remarked, giggling slightly before turning her attention back to Mogan. "So?" she asked, tilting her head slightly as she gave him an innocent smile.

Mogan had to admit that he was quite tense for his first mission as a Beacon student. It wasn't the first time he was sent to fight Grimm, but that had always been with his old teammates, people he trusted, and the more familiar setting of Vacuo. Her in Vale things were quite different. He was alone, in a new kingdom with a different culture, a different climate and in a school where he still did not have a team. Honestly, he had decided to volunteer for this mission mostly to vent pent-up frustration. People in Beacon were nice, but Mogan still hadn't managed to fit in just yet in the two couple weeks since his arrival, and while he was ok with being alone he couldn't shake away the fear that we would have to spend several more months in relative solitude. That was quite a bothersome situation, given the fact that some new friends were probably exactly what he needed to leave behind the disappointment that his previous team had given him.
Having said that, the other reason he had taken this mission was to try something new and challenging. Usually, he tried to avoid dangerous sounding missions like this one, but he just had this odd urge to try to break as many as his old habits as he could. In order to do so, this mission appeared perfect for several reasons. For one it would apparently put him in an authentically dangerous situation, not just a simple pack of weak grimm to exterminate or the occasional large one to hunt down, for an extended period of time with a professor and three other perfect strangers. This was the perfect setting for making bonds and get to know the others participants without the awkwardness of a mundane approach in the school corridors, nothing allows you to really know someone well like when you are forced to cross adversity together. Actions speak louder than words, after all.
Speaking of loud...
Mogan had intended to reflect and get some more rest on the Bullhead, but his nap was cut short by a perky female voice that informed him that the trip was almost over.
Too bad...
He thought, lazily opening just one eye to scan his surroundings and locate the source of the wake-up call, who was currently intent on checking her equipment.
I would have really liked ten more minutes, especially since I already checked everything last night...
Non-perishable food, water, snacks, ammunition, a kit for weapon maintenance and one for first aid, some changes of clothes, some more snacks, a book, his glasses, a couple of lighters, a deck of cards, etc. All in his backpack, while his weapons were in the black business suitcase beside it. The most basic stuff really. This wasn't his first mission, after all.
...but might as well get up and do some stretching.
Travelling while strapped to a Bullhead seat wasn't exactly the most comfortable way of napping, after all, and had left him a bit stiff.
So with a barely hidden yawn, Mogan rose from his seat loosed his shoulders before picking up both backpack and suitcase, and he was considering the possibility of wearing his weapons on the jacket instead of under when the orange haired girl mentioned before approached him with a barrage of questions.
Well this is starting off better than expected!
His first impression was that the girl was that she was part of the vast category of cheerful and talkative people, which made it already easier to have her around, but in its experience often such quality went hand in hand with a certain sincere and sometimes too naive fickleness. But that would require more observation to verify, so for the time being Mogan just decided to take his role as new candidate for Talia's friend list with a grain of salt.
He replied with a small smile, following the girl's gaze to the first year named Nathan, and waited for Talia to return her attention to him before responding.

"It's a pleasure, Talia. I'm Mogan and I think we are the same age since you too are in the third year, but just in case I'm twenty. My favorite food is a sweet made with boiled wheat, ricotta cheese, dark chocolate and candied fruit, a family recipe. It's to die for... I swear I can eat five bowls of the stuff consecutively and still be hungry for more... Ahem. Sorry, I get carried away when I talk about food. I don't really have a favorite color, I really enjoy them all depending on the circumstances, but if I had to chose I'd go with green: the lighter shades inspire positive emotions. I'm quite liking Beacon so far. It's very different from Shade, and I enjoy the change, but it's still too early for me to say which one I prefer. As for the question about me being a good fighter, I suppose there is no better answer that judging for yourself once we have met some Grimm, right? What about you? Something you want to add to your presentation that can't be read between the lines?"

That should have been enough for the time being. It wasn't much of a diversion but hopefully, Talia would forget about the two questions Mogan had left unanswered.

Another day at Beacon. A warm one, this time. While waking early hadn't really phased Nathan due to going to bed just as soon the evening prior, he was still feeling the fatigue a bit. He'd donned his harness and Ergia, check all munitions and supplies and had arrived, unsurprisingly, early at the rendezvous point. Met the supervisor, a few of the other participants as well. When the time for takeoff had arrived, he had climbed in and aimed right for the back leftmost seat, removing the black and green cylinder from his back before sitting down and placing it across his knees.

The beginning of the flight itself had been occupied by some introductions, chitchat and idle banter for a short while, after which some of the team elected to power nap as much as possible. This had left Nathan staring out his window, looking at the clouds and ground passing by. Gods, was the wilderness ever more beautiful than Vale. Not only did he like plants in general, he couldn't really get people's obsession with lighting up the most things. The streets, he could get, but the side of a building? An unoccupied car dealership? The sky? it all made no sense. Most of the journey passed like this, occasionally accompanied by Talia's humming.

Nathan turned away from the window and to the cabin's interior. At least two were still getting as much slumber as physically possible. The flight was about to end, though. Pretty sure it was, at least. He briefly stretched, observing as the girl aboard nearly assaulted the elder (bar the teacher) male with questions. The aforementioned barrage finished, she turned to him and asking him if he was awake.

...Well, yes. He was staring right at her, after all. She playfully threatened him with her semblance to, er, probably goad him to full alertness. Nathan's stare merely colored itself with a small smile, made smaller by his lack of facial control, before she turned back to the person who had a lot to answer.

A playful chuckle escaping his lips, Gwylan turned his attention back to his weapon after Suntalia's cheery wake-up call. He'd been polishing the trident for the past however long it had been since the introductions had died, and probably would've nodded off to sleep in the next few minutes; his eyes had been closed more often than open in the past few minutes. Normally Gwylan would join the older girl in her bright and bubbly conversation, but the flight had been a lot more draining than he had anticipated. Gwylan wasn't going to say no to a few more minutes of general rest. Besides, it gave him a chance to see how the others interacted with each other; a bit of people watching never hurt.

Not that Gwylan was the most insightful of individuals, cause he didn't really learn anything new about them: Suntalia was cheerful, Nathan wasn't too chatty and the Professor was calm. Mogan, though, earned a bit of credit for being willing to answer such a verbal bombardment. This time in the morning, most people would've resorted to grunting and glaring at the girl.

Letting his weapon rest on the wall beside him, Gwylan hopped to his feet and grabbed his pack from where it'd been left unceremoniously on the floor. A quick scan confirmed that nothing had disappeared since the polish had been removed, and with it returned to its pouch beside the cloth it was used with, Gwylan was set and ready to rock. Today was going to be a good day.

Unless you were a Grimm, that is. Then it was going to seriously suck.

Sleep was definitely out of the question now. Ferus wasn't sure how long it had been since he'd met a student with that much energy--it was a welcome respite from all the weary Hunters he'd met on his travels. Making sure to let the hyperactive Suntalia finish her queries before speaking, he cleared his throat softly to gather the team's attention. "Much as I am loath to stop any conversation, there are a few points of discussion I would prefer to bring up before we land." He spoke over the noise of the transport ship.

"As you are already aware, this is a mission with considerable risk. As a Huntsman I am charged with protecting any members under my guidance, and I am prepared to lay my life on the line to ensure you four return safely. However," he continued in a lighter tone, "This mission also serves as an excellent test of your skill, both in a group and solo. You will have opportunities to give it your all, to test your limits and improve as a Hunter. And that is what I aim to bring out in every one of you today; your full potential, unhindered by rules or any other factors. Simply the best you can do."

"We will be landing shortly in a forest clearing, not far from the outskirts of Mountain Glenn. The dropship will, as mentioned in the mission briefing, stay in the general area in case we require aid. What they did not mention, however, is that calling in the strafing run will very likely attract even more Grimm to the nearby location purely from sound. We will then scout out any suspicious behaviour in the Grimm, or if they are clustered in a certain location."

The professor paused to let his words sink in. "Any questions, feel free to ask at any time. Even if you interrupt me." Outside, the dropship had began its descent to the surface.

Shooting a quick dimpled smile at Professor Ferus, Suntalia turned to Mogan. "We'll finish this later!" she whispered happily before turning her full attention to the Professor. Remembering her classes under his tutelage, she excitedly listened to him speak of the dangers involved with the mission. As dangerous as everything sounded, she couldn't help but smile at the thought of getting to use her fighting abilities and semblance to its fullest today. The sky looked to be on the clearer side, making it more difficult for her to use her semblance, but it wasn't enough to prevent her fully. Just means a longer charge time she thought, as the Professor finished his debriefing and asked if there were any questions.

Raising her hand quickly, Suntalia waved her arm slightly as she tried to hide her excitement. "Yes! Yes! Yes! I have a question Professor!" she asked loudly. "Do you have any inclination of what Grimm we might encounter? Are we going to be all together, paired up or will we be splitting up individually? Should we work out a strategy or just run and gun? Do you have a nickname I can call you by?" Despite the last question seeming out of place, she still wanted to ask as she was still deciding on nicknames for everyone there. Maybe Professor Ferry? or Professor Furry? she thought as she waited for her questions to be answered.

Professor Talandar had a somewhat imposing presence. He gave away an aura of confidence and authority that, Mogan suspected, found its uses when you had to teach to hundreds of hormonal, often immature, combat trained teenagers armed to the teeth.
The transfer student didn't give the older hunter's words much weight, as it was more or less the standard stalk before a mission: be careful, give your best, use it as a chance to improve yourselves and so on. What Mogan did pay attention to was the possibility of having to fight immediately after getting off the bullhead.
Yeah, makes sense. I should put on Give and Take then. It would be pretty embarrassing to land flat on the ground because I was not equipped to utilize my landing strategy or something like that.
And so Mogan put down both backpack and suitcase, took off his jacket, and put it in said backpack. Then inserted both his arms in the two hidden openings on the sides of his suitcase. While his weapons rearranged themselves around his arms, he listened to Talia's questions, which were pretty much those he would have asked himself, except for the one regarding the nickname.
Gods I hope she won't come up with a nickname for everyone...
With Give and Take deployed and his utility belt on, Mogan was ready for a fight. The one thing Mogan wasn't very convinced about was the versatility of this group. From what he had gathered they lacked in both viable ranged options and crowd control, but that wasn't necessarily going to be a problem if they were careful about the way they would approach large groups of enemies. It's always useful to be aware of one own weaknesses, after all. But was there any reason to ask about this? It was too late to do anything about it anyway and surely the Professor was more than aware of the potential issue.

Ferus cracked a smile at the eager girl's bombardment of questions. "That sounds like more than just one question," he pointed out jokingly. "Your reports didn't seem to disclose much, but from what I have heard any Grimm we encounter will most likely not be your usual fare of Beowolves and Ursa. Expect many varieties that you may not have fought before. As for grouping, if ever we need to split up, it will be in groups of two; a first year and a third year. We can work out plans depending on what situation arises."

He paused to consider the last question. While he did so, the other third year seemed to be preparing for one of Beacon's infamous "landing strategies". "If anything, just call me the Professor. Oh, and there's no need to jump, Mogan--as you can see, I have nothing on me and--" He lowered his voice and leaned forward. "--landing strategies are overrated. We'll be landing on the ground shortly. But in case you haven't already, make preparations for a fight as soon as we exit." As he spoke, his left hand was thumbing his scroll.

The noise of the dropship landing drowned out any sound the scroll may have made in response. "Alright, everyone off--and do be wary of any Grimm in the immediate vicinity. The sound may have already attracted some."

Nathan didn't really do much apart from turning back towards the window as the aircraft began its descent. he quickly turned back, though, as the Professor, as he elected to be called in the end, dished out further information regarding the mission and responded to yet another deluge of interrogations from the small, highly energetic redhead. Didn't last long before the vehicle landed, though, at which point Nathan got up, delpoyed Ergia into staff form to follow the recommendation and waited for everyone else to exit, keeping an eye out for red glowing spots or any other sign of Grimm in the meantime.

Once everyone else was off, he followed suit, continuing to keep his eyes peeled - despite the distance to the edge of the forest.

Mogan nodded politely to the professor but wasn't convinced that not having apparently anything on him that could be used for aid in a dangerous landing meant that he did not have a landing strategy.
Personally, Mogan was of the opinion that landing strategies were pretty important for a huntsman, given that you never know when you might need to drop from a moving bullhead, the top of a building, o a flying Grimm, but then again a full-fledged huntsman probably considered such concerns trivial. While the vehicle was descending, Mogan could see in the distance beyond the foliage of forest trees, the ruins of the many buildings that once made up this now abandoned settlement. Truly a sad ending, especially considering how many people and resources were likely committed to such a project.
Anyway it was useless to dwell on such depression thoughts, so when the bullhead safely got close to the ground and Mogan was able to just hop down landing on the soft grass of the clearing, he took a moment to clear his mind by taking in the view and a breath of fresh air that smelled of now almost pristine nature. He was obviously on the lookout for eventual Grimm hiding on the outskirts of the clearing, but the treeline was most likely far enough to give the hunters time to react in time to almost any kind of threat. After all, there were precious few Grimm that could be stealthy or fast enough to get the drop on a trained huntsman already in a state of alert.
With his armored hands on his hips and the backpack on his back, Mogan took a couple of steps away from the bullhead, to give more space to the others to jump down, and thought about the current building up of adrenaline he was experiencing. He hadn't fought Grimm in what felt like an eternity... since he had left Vacuo, to be precise, so about two months? The excitement and the apprehension for the upcoming fights were merging inside his stomach to form that beautiful tension that makes you feel like a coiled spring. Mogan guessed it was more or less the same sensation that actors or surgeons felt before respectively stepping on stage or beginning a surgery.
A couple of deep breaths were enough to soothe him so that all that was left was a moderate urge to tear his way through a horde of monsters with his own fists, and a guilty desire for a chocolate candy to reward himself after he was done.

OOC: Was waiting for Dusty to reply, but I guess I'll go next...

Taking her cue, Suntalia smiled excitedly as she gathered up her things. As the airship landed, she quietly hopped off right behind Mogan. Despite her happy demeanor on the outside, she was a huntress in training and, therefore, was fully alert of her immediate surrounding. With the treeline far off, it made the chances of a horde of Grimm to approach them unaware rather slim. Fighting a horde right at the beginning would've been exhilarating, but would make it difficult seeing that there was only a few of them. With Firestorm in its full length, she merely held it perpendicular to her body, forming a cross with herself.

Walking up to stand next to Mogan, Suntalia gently nudged him with her elbow. "Someone seems rather excited to start!" she remarked, keeping her playful demeanor for all the others to see. Dropping her voice, however, she took a more serious note for only Mogan to see. "Everything will be fine. Just be mindful of the first years. Can't be having them die on us here, now can we?" she whispered, shooting a serious glance up at Mogan's face before switching back to a smile. "I personally am intrigued to see what kind of Grimm we might run into. What do you guys think it could be?" she asked loudly for everyone to hear.

My bad, got a bit buried in college stuff and travelling back home. Plus I just got a new laptop, so I was waiting for that to update and stuff

Humming in response to the Professor, Gwylan threw his pack onto his back and secured the straps properly. The thought of new Grimm sent tingles down Gwylan's spine as he pondered the possibilities of what they could face. Hordes, swarms, solo giants; mutant mixes of animals that really shouldn't be in anyway related to each other, it was almost like a birthday present for the boy. If they were even half as deadly as he was hoping for, this'd be quite the trip. Quite the risk too, but Gwylan didn't decide to attend Beacon because it provided safety and security; the opposite actually, it was his best chance to put his skills to use. Well, most of them anyway. Being able to tie a dozen different knots hadn't actually come up yet somehow.

The Bullhead landed and Gwylan slipped out past Nathan and after the third years. The weather was nice and there wasn't a sign of any Grimm in the area. Well, at least not in the visible area anyway. For all Gwylan knew, they could be waiting behind a tree like some weird hide-and-seek surprise no one really wanted. Didn't stop him from jogging a few paces out and burying his trident in the dirt, only to stretch his back and legs out now that he was free from the airship. "Ahhhh that's better", he grumbled before looking back over his shoulder at Suntalia and Mogan. "Hmmm, I'm hoping for something a bit different, ya know. Beowolves and Nevermores are great and all, but I'd like something unexpected. Like a three headed Grimm with no arms".

The Professor was the last to disembark, having had a word with the pilot of the dropship, which promptly took off after ensuring no passengers remained onboard. At the same time, a dark rectangular object flew through the sky with impressively low noise for its speed, landing next to Ferus and revealing its identity as a rocket locker. Reaching inside, Ferus withdrew his folded Grimm Repertoiré and Voyance, leaving the equipment on the lush grass. Next to come was his armor, which he put on with ease. Lastly, he rammed a spike into a barrel, before snapping the entire lance upright, picking up his shield, and sending the locker on its way.

While doing so, he listened to the idle chatter of the group. None of them seemed particularly nervous, while also listening to his instructions of watching the treeline. "Curiosity of the unknown is a virtue, but as the old saying goes, 'be careful what you wish for'. Grimm like what you described can logically only exist via mutations or human interference. However, I'm certain there will be something unexpected, to say the least."

Before Ferus could call for the group to move out, those with keen senses would hear a dull humming coming from the group's left, rapidly drawing near. The teacher himself did not hear the noise until it was almost too late. "Students, on guard!" he shouted in time for a group of Lancers to emerge from the trees, all 4 of them homing in on Gwylan with stingers bared.

TARGETS:
● Lancers x4

Battle Data:
● 4 x 4% from stingers (Gwylan)

(OOC: Ask and you shall receive, Gwylan :P. Lancers are not known for their toughness, so one solid hit from any weapon will very likely bring it down. The ways that battles are done vary from thread to thread, so I think laying ground rules for this thread might be beneficial: )
● No need to include damage numbers in your posts--how strong/effective the attack will be is based off your posts, unless affected by other sources.
● Damage done by Grimm will be listed in red and the recipient by name and aura color (As with above). The number in front indicates how many attacks are being launched.
● Preferably no auto-hitting unless stated in Battle Data.

Mogan found himself quite surprised by Talia's insight, as he was usually quite good at masking his emotions. Then again she could have tried to guess, and surely excitement before a mission wasn't an uncommon feeling to have, even for more experienced students.

"I'm surprised you could tell. It's just that it's been a while since I last went on a mission or fought Grimm, and I guess the most apprehensive part of me wonders how well I'm going to manage both those factors and the responsibility of looking after our younger comrades. But there is no reason to worry! I'm sure that between us and the professor we can handle this. And besides, it's not like we have to protect untrained civilians... Even a first-year student should be more than a match for a group of ordinary Grimm or at least be able to stall for time."

Mogan said with a serious expression and a shrug.
Probably their biggest contribution in aiding the younger students would manifest itself in terms of shot calling and capability to adapt to an unknown situation, in order not to put others in an unmanageable dangerous situation. At the end of the day fighting prowess and combat experience was nothing but corollaries for what's truly important when fighting for one's own life: a clear mind and a good plan of action. History was full of overconfident, albeit very strong, hunters that had died on missions that should have been easy for them, all because they had rushed into danger or had approached the enemy without a too much thought.
As for the strange kinds of Grimm they could encounter on this mission, Gwilan apparently wanted a three-headed Grimm with no arms. Which would no doubt be a pain to bring down, given that such a Grimm probably would have had a lot of armored bone plates, and would have been both big enough to resist ordinary blows and with long heads fast and strong enough to attack from mid-range. Throw in something like poisoned fangs, or just a simple charge attack that could trample an ordinary human and you had the perfect recipe for a very annoying Grimm. Sure five hunters could have killed such a beast, but a single one would have surely found himself in trouble.
In the meantime, the professor's rocket locker had arrived but it was too early to say what kind of weapon it was. Judging from the armor that accompanied the weapon, the prof was a "power-fighter", who sacrificed mobility to the benefit of a good defense and the chance to trade hits. So he most likely had some kind of heavy weapon and would act as the tank of the group in case of hard battles.
Mogan was about to give his own opinion on the matter of the grimm types when something about what professor Talandar said caught his attention.

"Professor, what do you mean when you said "human interference"? How would humans be able to..."

Mogan stopped his question short, his ears picking up a strange noise that, judging by his expression, the professor had already heard. Mogan turned to face the direction from which the buzzing sound was coming and at the same time the professor shouted and four lancers emerged from the trees, aiming at Gwilan.
Gwilan, who had jogged a few more steps from the landing point than the others, was the closest to the Grimm, which were, in fact, going straight for him. Add to this that the first year student had thought well to stick his trident in the ground.
As my grandpa always said: "There is never a moment of peace under the moon". Mogan thought while he kicked the ground to propel himself forward and uncoiled the whip wrapped around his left arm. He could probably have made it to Gwilan before the lancers, but there was no guarantee that the wasp-like Grimms would not shoot their stingers before. So instead of going directly in the direction of the lancers, Mogan moved diagonally to them in a way that would allow him to circle around them while giving them his left flank. Lancers were among the variants of Grimm that Mogan most hated to face. Beyond the unpleasant aspects, the important factors were that lancers moved in swarms, had high mobility, had means to attack from a safe distance while in flight and even up close they could rely on as many as six sharp and jagged appendages and a pair of powerful mandibles. So they were a nightmare for a close quarters fighter like him, especially if he didn't want to take hits. But it was exactly because they were such a bad matchup for Mogan that he knew exactly how to best deal with them. As the saying goes: "You can never defeat another if you know not how to defeat yourself" because once you know what your weaknesses are you can work around them and research your nemesis weaknesses. In the case of lancers, their biggest advantage was the ability to fly. If you managed to force them to the ground, that meant that they would lose their mobility and speed and would be forced to use some of their appendages to walk, and it would then be sufficient to approach them from the sides or the back to nullify the threat of all the lancer's weapons.
And so Mogan deployed his spiked whip, crackling with lightning dust, and while he circled around his targets he lashed it towards the wings of the closest lancer. His intention was to hit one Grimm after the other, in order to damage the wings of all of them and leave the rest of the group to aid Gwylan.

"Watch out for the stingers! They can shoot them. I'll try to incapacitate their wings and force them to the ground."

Mogan shouted while using his whip. A drop of sweat trickled down his neck. He had put himself in a dangerous position, he was aware of that. On his left the lancers and on his right the treeline, with his allies on the other side of the Grimms, which meant that if any more creatures emerged from the forest he would potentially have to deal with them alone for a while, especially if he wasn't able to hit the wings of the flying monstrosities and the fight dragged along for some time. So part of his attention and his left arm, the one with the claws and the cannon, were already aimed at the treeline and ready to react to the arrival of new threats.
Oh! How he had missed this! This sense of clarity, the drumming of his heartbeat... too bad that lancers made his skin crawl with disgust, so the experience resulted somewhat ruined in his opinion.

Since this is my first fight in this rpg, please let me know if I make some mistakes, do too much or too less.
I also have a couple of questions:
1) In the Battle data what does that "4 x 4% from stingers" means? The first 4 is the number of attacks, but is that 4% the damage to his aura that Gwilan has already suffered or is it the damage that he will suffer if a stinger hits him?
2) If all four stingers hit him, will he suffer a 16% aura loss? It that's the case doesn't it seem a bit low to you? In the show, those things pierce the metal hull of flying ships like paper, so I imagine that taking four of those should do quite a bit of damage, no?

Well, they weren't new or different, but a group of demon wasps was certainly a good way to start off a mission in Gwylan's opinion; it really set the tone for how the day was probably going to go. The fact that they were all going for him was just icing on the cake. Gwylan didn't even have to go looking for the fight; it was flying towards him on red wings of..... something suitably poetic that he'd come up with later when he wasn't in a fight.

Grabbing onto the trident with both hands, Gwylan wrenched it out of the ground with all his might and began to spin it, aiming to block the two Lancers on the outside with the blades and butt respectively. The middle two, though, he could do nothing about thanks to the angles, so he allowed them to hit him dead on, throwing himself back for added momentum and so the two Grimm would overshoot and keep on flying. He aimed to roll back onto his feet and spin around, swinging his trident with the intention of bisecting one of the Lancers. Continuing to spin, Gwylan hoped to turn back and face the two Lancers that hadn't managed to land a blow, marching towards them with haste.

Listening to Mogan while watching Gwylan move ahead of them, Suntalia simply shot a smile up at Mogan. "Being friends with a lot of people has its perks" she replied simply. Truth be told, after spending the last couple years at Beacon trying to befriend everyone she could, it did allow her to read people's expressions and reactions a bit easier. However, her remark was mostly to help reassure herself and calm her own emotions as she tried to lighten the tense air around them.

Listening to Mogan ask the professor a question, Suntalia immediately was on high alert a moment after both Mogan and Professor Ferus were on alert. Turning towards the oncoming Lancers, she was impressed at Mogan's quick reaction to the situation. "Let's flank them Mogan!" she yelled happily as she sprinted quickly to the right of the oncoming Grimm. She had heard of Lancers before, but hadn't had the rare opportunity to fight one. Seeing that they were fliers, that gave her a huge advantage against them. Watching the others spring into action, she did likewise, separating Firestorm into two shorter spears. Activating her semblance, she quickly got into position so that she would have an easy shot against the Lancer furthest from the others. "Heads up!" she yelled gaily as she aimed one spear towards the sky and the other at her first target. "Bang!" she said as a huge thunderbolt struck her spearhead and, travelling through the chain, shot straight at the first target.

Nathan didn't really pay much attention to his companion's idle chatter. The only thing about them he was watchful of was their position, keeping close while he continued to scan the surroundings. Concluding that there really wasn't anything close enough to jump them, he switched his weapon to gun form.

An unusual sound soon attracted his attention, though. He turned towards its perceived source; a small, black-ish speck far too fast to be Grimm. The man-made object soon arrived and unceremoniously slammed into the ground, reavealing itself as a rocket locker. The supervisor's, apparently. Nathan returned to his wary stance while professor Talandar kitted himself out.

When everyone seemed about ready to set out, yet another sound manifested itself, very shortly followed by a quartet of Lancers bursting forth from the trees. Well, here started the unusual things, huh. Lancers were usually spotted around Mistral rather than way up North of Sanus, right? There was definitely something weird happening for such a demon to trek across all that distance.

After briefly evaluating whether or not he should step in front of the most-glaringly targeted Gwylan to help defend, Nathan observed that everyone was, in fact, handling their own pretty well. Most seemed to lack a ranged solution, though. There lay his decision; shoot the Lancers with Ergia when they're farther away.

Battle Data
Lots and lots of bullets at at least one Lancer. The amount will be withdrawn from the magazine afterwards.

Ferus was initially prepared to take evasive action to return fire when the Grimm dropped in like unwelcome guests at a party. However, the alertness of the group rendered that action unnecessary. At first glance, all four students handled themselves well. Communication attempts from Mogan, always important when fighting in a group. And while Gwylan's decision to leave himself unarmed was duly punished, his response was quick and as a result, avoided half the initial potential damage. Things were going smoothly with the first years, and with the other two--What?

The hailstorm of bullets was too fast and too many for the unfortunate Lancer in Nathan's sights to evade, and was promptly eradicated from the face of the continent. Gwylan's slash was partially evaded, but his trident still nicked the wings of his target, and it dropped to the floor, no longer able to fly. It still had its natural weaponry, and shot its stinger at Gwylan.

Something strange was happening to the other two Lancers, however. Instead of turning into black powder and vanishing from the lightning bolt and Lightning Dust respectively, the Grimm were somehow unharmed. The Lancer struck by the bolt seemed to be pulsing with yellow light, as if it had somehow absorbed the electrical charge, while the Lancer struck by Mogan's electrified whip started changing. From its tail, where the barbed stinger usually resided, the flesh rent and tore itself, making way for another, equally lethal stinger. Both were launched at Mogan, somehow crackling with electricity.

TARGETS:
● Lancers x3 (1 shot down by Nathan)
   ● 1 Lancer downed by Gwylan, autohit allowed
   ● 2 mutated Lancers (Twin Stingers, Unknown)

Battle Data:
● 10% from launched stinger (Gwylan)
● 2 x 11%+3% per second from twin stingers+electricity (Mogan)

Talia could apparently shoot bolts of lightning, Nathan had shot down one of the lancers and Gwilan was about to deliver the coup the grace to another. In another moment he would have internally lamented his fate for not having the ability to shoot lightning bolts, but something else had caught his attention.

"Well, this is quite new... And absolutely unfair..."

Mogan complained, grumbling and with a puzzled expression, while the two lancers that had been stricken with elemental attacks by him and Talia not only came out unscathed but in addition seemed to mutate right before their eyes in response.
With a mechanical whirring sound, Mogan winded back his whip and studied the lancers while they changed. The third-year student wasn't all that concerned about this oddity, and he could have used that window to attack, but it would have been a pity to waste such an opportunity to study an unknown phenomenon such as dust/electricity absorbing Grimm. Especially if later down the line they ended up using the wrong kind of attack against a more dangerous Grimm or in a more dangerous situation.
So Mogan spoke loudly enough to be heard, but in a calmer tone compared to the one used before during the engage.

"Don't let these two escape, but don't kill them either just yet. Be careful of the other one! I don't want to jinx it, but I think there is a good chance it may just explode at any moment. It's never a good sign when something begins to pulse after eating a high amount of energy. This is too interesting to just..."

He had to stop because the lanced he had attacked had thought wise to retaliate by shooting him his two brand new and... apparently electrified...  stingers.
Cheeky bastard!
He thought and lashed both his arms in a diagonal chop to deviate the incoming stingers and prevent them from piercing his body, the back of his armored hands colliding with the sides of the stingers to redirect them towards the ground at his sides.
His intention was then to grab the "cables" that connected the abdomen of the grimm to the stinger to prevent it both from escaping and from firing again. Then Mogan would have tried to pull the lancer towards the ground, torn his wings off, and tried to understand why and how the Grimm had absorbed his attack. He was lucky that Give and Take were made with non-conducting materials (in order not to electrocute himself by mistake while handling his whip), or this operation would have been somewhat more bothersome.

Well, that was one of the little blighters taken care off. Gwylan couldn't help but hum in satisfaction as he began to make his way over to the Lancer that Mogan had whip-shocked? That seemed like a viable verb for what the older student had done. Talia, meanwhile, had flung a freaking lightning bolt at the other Lancer. That was one wicked semblance she had there, no two ways about it. There was no way anything could walk that off.

"Oh what the heck is this nonsense!?", Gwylan grumbled as he watched the two Grimm not only absorb his teammates' attacks but get stronger from them. That was completely unfair, flying off a lightning bolt. How had they managed to do that anyway? These were some weird Grimm alright. At least the one he'd his earlier wasn't going to super charge itself, that thing was good and-

Gwylan grunted as the stinger buried itself in his back. Oh, he was so going to get into trouble for not making certain that it was dead, but he'd been so sure. That had been a solid connection, Gwylan would bet his life on it, and he'd brought it down to ground. Damn it, this bug was definitely going to die now, couldn't risk it messing with one of the others as they dealt with the electrically charged Lancers. Turning on his heel and reversing his grip on the trident, Gwylan took off in a charge, covering the distance to the downed Lancer as quickly as possible, and aimed to bring the trident down hard so the outer prong buried itself in the Grimm's head while the others pierced the torso.

(OOC: Moving plot forward to keep things going.)

The downed Lancer got its comeuppances for stinging Gwylan, receiving a triple-pronged trident though the head and torso before scattering to the wind. The other Lancer that attacked thankfully didn't understand the difference between conducting and non-conducting material, and as such had its attack knocked aside harmlessly by Mogan's gauntlets, before being pulled to the ground. The remaining Lancer that had absorbed Suntalia's lightning bolt had began moving forward, before a powerful blast of wind knocked it straight into the trunk of a tree hard enough to kill the Grimm, its ominous pulsing fading away with the vaporising body. If the Hunters cared to turn around they would see Professor Talandar wielding his lance in the direction of the attack, ejecting the used Air Dust crystal.

The remaining Lancer would be landlocked, an easy target for any weapon to strike its body while Mogan held its stingers. No other signs could be seen that any reinforcements would be showing up.

TARGET:
● Lancer x1 (1 impaled by Gwylan, 1 killed by Ferus)
  ● Autohit allowed on remaining lancer

OOC: Sorry for the delay! Was trying to figure out how to get on the site.

Slightly surprised by the fact that the Lancer absorbed her attacked, Suntalia paused for a moment to soak it all in as well as observe her teammates proceed to fight the newly changed Grimm. As a smile creased across her face, she couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement at the thought of a new type of Grimm right before her eyes. "Well...guess to place B" she remarked, laughing as she ran straight towards the last one that was being held down by Mogan. "I call dibs on this one!" she yelled happily as she reconnected Firestorm into one. Jumping into the air, she slammed her spear straight into the creatures writhing thorax. Giving a big dimpled smile to Mogan, she pulled the spearhead out and stabbed the Lancer in its head, to finish the job. "Not bad of a start, don't you think?" she inquired, a laugh proceeding right after.

As Nathan looked to the remaining targets to decide if he could and/or should engage, the Grimm started behaving oddly. The electricity had been absorbed. What the fuck? that's literally impossible. Grimm couldn't use Dust. That was the most basic of basics about them. Yet here were these two lancers, not giving a shit. Nobody else gave a shit either, apparently, since apart from the initial surprise of attacks not working, Nathan was the only one seriously taken aback. Well, that he could see, even though his face probably didn't diplay it that much. Mogan even wanted them captured, not dead! Not only was this a bad idea with ordinary Grimm, these weren't even Grimm at all!

After every single one was taken down, Nathan having merely kept up his attention by being ready to support anyone, anytime. In the end, though, his help wasn't needed. When everything settled down, he spoke up, his voice failing to be anything other than calm. "It's a horrible start. What the fuck was that? Grimm can't use Dust. Those weren't Grimm. Screw capturing normal Grimm, I don't want whatever these non-Grimm things are 'captive' close to me."

"And there it goes our opportunity to understand more about this strange reaction of certain Grimms to dust and/or elemental attacks."

Sighed Mogan after Talia happily killed it with a smile on her face and without any regard for his previous request of waiting before killing the abnormal Grimm. He let go of the stingers as they began to dissolve into black particles and put his armored hands on his hips with a slight frown.

"Well, it's too late to argue about it, but that was kind of a wasted perfect chance and a mistake that could cost us in the event of a future and more dangerous encounter. I wasn't suggesting to capture the lancer..."

The third-year said to Nathan, who had clearly expressed his opinion against what would have surely been a poor idea.

"... I simply intended to study an unknown opponent and discover more about his abilities and, hopefully, limits or weaknesses. For example, I wanted to test what would happen if he came into contact with more dust, of the same type or of a different one. Would it have been able to resist that too? Would it have changed again and in a different way in response to another kind of dust? Was there something visually different about that particular lancer that could have helped us recognize a similar one?"

Mogan made a brief pause to breathe deeply.

"I don't want to sound pessimistic, but now we can't run the risk of using elemental attacks on Grimms anymore. Unless there is just one of two of them and we are confident we can handle whatever changes they manifest if they indeed change again. Let's just hope we don't run into a big group of Grimm with too many of these abnormal ones or, even worse, a big group with only abnormal ones or, even worse, a big group with one or two big mutant Grimm."

Another pause.

"Oh, wait... Sorry, that does sound pretty pessimistic. My bad people. It's just that I get carried away when I can't satisfy my curiosity. Anyway Talia, I agree that this hasn't been a bad start at all. At least we have an idea of what we could be up against and we can imagine why others may have had trouble in this area."

Mogan the turned to the professor, who had previously dispatched of the pulsating lancer and now wielded a big lance.

"So Professor, what should we do now?"

(OOC: Skipping Dusty as requested.)

The Professor strode briskly up to the group, lance folded and stored on his back. "After observation, I think both Nathan and Mogan have a point. Indeed, Grimm cannot use Dust. This is proven over many, many decades of fighting and observing. However, Mogan's point may hold water. Both Lancers that...mutated...were hit with an element, in this case lightning, not merely Dust. Following the fact that Grimm cannot use Dust, that is the most logical explanation. As to why..." the teacher frowned, "There was nothing of the sort in the reports I received. For now, once again, Mogan's advice is sound. Avoid using elemental attacks if possible, as we know that is one of the triggering factors for mutation."

During the group's fight, the sun had fully risen, shining its glorious rays over the small stretch of forest before Mountain Glenn. "It is high time we got moving, students. Follow me and try to keep your thoughts positive, if possible." the professor said before setting off in the direction of the ruined city.

OOC: Sorry for the delay! Was on vacation the past week or so.

Listening to the others, Suntalia sat on a nearby boulder and swung her legs idly. The thought of not using any elements did put her in a bit of a predicament, but it just meant that she would have to let her fighting abilities shine instead of her semblance. Hearing the professor give the command to move out, Suntalia merely saluted him. "Aye aye Professor Fer!" she exclaimed as she got up and skipped a bit to catch up.

Giving a beaming smile to the other students, Suntalia motioned for them to follow before letting out a light jingle of a laugh as she caught up to the professor. "Keeping my thoughts positive is my specialty!" she proclaimed, looking up at the professor as she continued to skip in pace with him. "So what made you want to be a professor?" she inquired, seeing that it looked like they had time to kill as they grew nearer to the abandoned city. Despite her happy demeanor, she still kept a close eye on the forest as well as the city in the event that another group of Grimm could potentially come out at any moment.

(((HOW DARE YOU BE SORRY FOR BEING ON VACATION)))

Nathan followed the team, listening to them while keeping an eye out for danger. To that end, he switched Ergia back into staff mode. While he actually paid attention to his teammates, he found there to be very little to comment on. Instead, he mulled a bit more over the enemies they'd just encountered. There were two possibilities.

One; Grimm are not known to be capable of physiologically manipulating elemental attacks of any kind. Thus, these mutated ones would've needed semblances, which require Aura, which requires a soul, which makes them not Grimm at all. Two; these Grimm had somehow been forcibly implanted with technology.
