So, if you've played chess enough, chances are you prefer one side of the board over the other. So, my question is "if your characters were chess players, which side would they prefer?"
For instance, Aurelia, Clara, and Toast would prefer white side; Aurelia is a very proactive person in general and would prefer the opportunity to set up her board before her opponent; Clara, in a similar sense, would look to cripple her opponent at the first opportunity; while Toast would simply want to make the first move, and would set up feints to manipulate the opponent.
Lucas and Smokey, on the other hand, would prefer black side; Smokey generally performs best when his opponent comes to him, and he'd set up very defensively; while Lucas is someone who wants to observe his opponent and make moves based on how his opponent plays.
Coincidentally, if all my characters played each other in a round robin tournament, the results would probably look like Lucas-->Toast-->Aurelia-->Clara-->Smokey

Setsuna: White, aims to end the game quickly via use of Rooks, Bishops and Knights, fairly high-mobility pieces.
Tina: Black, prefers to react to opponent's moves instead of making them herself.
Tieren: Black, plays extremely aggressive and prioritises capturing opposing pieces. (He's not very good at chess)
Kei: White, takes a strategist approach and plays neutrally. Neither offensive nor defensive.
Lunae: White, uses her Queen liberally and offensively, supported by Rooks and Bishops.
Graham: Black, aggressive but not overly so. Either makes his moves slowly or extremely quickly.
Jocelyn: White, prefers to keep her pieces safe. Doesn't take the initiative or opt to capture pieces, only doing so whilst defending her pieces.
Yu: Black, sacrifices everything to protect his King. Plays overly defensive.
Rachel: Black, uses her Knights often. Sets up traps by sacrificing pawns.
Ferus: Black, surprisingly defensive. Plays around his opponent's moves.
Emile: White, leans slightly toward defence rather than offence. Isn't afraid to expose his King.
In order: Kei > Ferus > Rachel > Emile > Tina > Setsuna > Graham > Lunae > Jocelyn > Yu > Tieren

Why do you people keep asking these questions I don't have an answer to

Merletta: Black. She plays reactivatly to everyone else.
Blair: she doesn't not even know what Chess is
Alex: Always plays Black, he reads his opponent and plays off them

I find it interesting that people seem to be answering the question as if their characters approach different problems the same or at least similar ways. Although there are definitely similarities between playing a chess game and fighting a physical battle.
For example, Calen is, in reality, a very reactive fighter but that is a self-imposed restriction as a result of his ideology on the matter. In front of the chess board, however, he has no such restriction and would likely prefer white if simply because of the statistical advantage it provides. Probably favouring the various gambits at his disposal, like the Danish or Queen or what have you.
Saffron, on the other hand, isn't a very good chess player, she understands the rules of course but doesn't really have the skills or the knowledge to predict moves. She would also prefer white for mostly the same reason as Calen although rather than to further dominate their opponent's Saffron hopes only to put up a respectable defence and therefore plays quite defensively.
Amarant's semblance makes chess and other such games non-contests so he prefers not to use it. Even so, it's the kind of game he is perfectly suited to and therefore prefers to play black for the added challenge.
Ramalia is interested in stuff around chess rather than the game itself and as such doesn't have a preference for one side over another.
