Title: Wonders of the Wood[Open]
Post by: willow_lark on September 20, 2016, 08:04:17 PM
Sherwood walked along the outer edge of Beacon Academy, carrying his newly received bag of uniform and school supplies. Across his back he had a duffel, filled with what worldly possessions he chose to bring to become a Huntsman. In his other hand he carried a hard case, long and large, which contained his precious weapon. He wore his standard clothes still, not yet having a chance to change into the uniform before attending this social event. He wished he could meet his team sooner, but he had to hope Beacon knew what it was doing keeping the team announcements for a later date.

The path Sherwood walked came around the building it bordered, revealing a view of the Emerald Forest stretching out beyond the cliff. Sherwood stopped, and with only a brief moment of thought he turned to get a better view. Looking out over the forest brought a wave of nostalgia over him. He missed the forests of Western Vale. The Emerald Forest was the closest thing to home he had here in Beacon, as the city was nothing like his hometown and the Academy was unique place all it's own. He knew there were far more Grim in this forest, the Academy needs them for classes and practical exams, but he still longed to get lost in them for a day, hunting what he could and bringing it home for a meal.

That was impossible of course. Not that he couldn't, he was sure Beacon could care less. But he was no longer a hunter, but a Huntsman. Huntsman hunt Grim, to protect people. They are the bastion against the wild of Grim, rather than the apex predators that a hunter in the woods is. He had embraced this role at home, and a little home sickness wasn't going to waver his resolve. If he went and acted as a hunter, ignoring his new responsibilities, he'd never recover. Sherwood steeled himself, until he came to be comfortable at Beacon, he'd have to resist going back to his favorite activities.

His thoughts fading at their conclusion, he was left with only the view and the weight of his gear. He listened to the sounds of the forest, idle questions floating through his mind only to be ignored so he could enjoy the quiet.

Then a certain radio DJ bumps into Sherwood.

(Venus Magnus I presume)
Sherwood turns around, shaken from his thoughts.

"Afternoon" he stays in a slight drawl. Given how far off the path he had been standing, Sherwood assumes this woman has some reason coming over here. He takes a glance across his shoulder with a light smile in welcoming of the new presence.

Venus looks up and the first thing that happens is she backs away, anxiety getting her again.
"S-S-Sorry, I thought no-no one else comes this far o-of path..." Venus stuttered as she looks down.

"No need to apologize Ma'am." he says. Sherwood takes a wide step to the left, motioning as best he could with his gear laden hands for her to step forward. "More than enough view for the two of us." he says. Sherwood turns back to the woods, letting the girl regain her composure. He certainly wasn't going to rush anyone into conversation.

Afer a very long while, Venus cleared her throat. Now she can speak, her anxiety now gone.

"So why are you around?"

"I'm a new student. Hence the bags," he says with a chuckle, jostling his baggage. "Administration told me to go enjoy a 'social event' since the team announcements aren't for awhile yet. Taking the long way there though. Not much for chit chat." He pauses for a moment.

"Don't think you're a new student. Why are you here?"

"I'm new, transfer from Shade, though I'm in my third year," Venus choked on her words, the anxiety is coming back but she continued. "I'm not up for chit chat either so I guess you and I are somewhat similar."

"... Guess I can't ask you for directions then." he says simply. "Don't matter. I'm Sherwood Cathasaigh, first year. But I reckon you figured that out."

"Kinda, you smell different from here, yet your scent somewhat reminds me of the forest, good to meet you Sherwood," Venus adjusts the collar of her jacket before continuing. "I'm-" She chokes again before continuing. "I'm Venus Magnus, odd name for a girl I know."

"Don't think any name is particularly odd for someone. It's their name." Sherwood says with as shrug. He gives his attire a sniff at the girl's other comment. "I must be too used to the woodsy smell, I didn't realize. Hope it ain't too strong."

"Another human won't even smell what I smell, a Faunus like me will," Venus managed to say without the choking.

"Oh, a faunus. Not many of you out where I live." Sherwood shrugs. It was true. This girl might be the first one Sherwood had actually scene. "Could see being a mite jealous. Better sense of smell might be nice for hunting..." Sherwood trails off, clearly listing things in his mind.

"Oh so you hunt? What do you do often that you say that?" Venus was getting warmed up to Sherwood.

"I hunted game. Family trade. Now I'm going to hunt Grimm." Sherwood says. His tone is a tad wistful, speaking of times long past.

Venus almost cautiously grabbed her tail, like her parents and siblings and those older than her parents, her specific family line has very very beautiful jaguar spots on their Faunus parts. If anything she has been warned not to trust those after their skin.

"Grimm are almost no different from animals, unless you count the large size, bone plates, feather arrows, rolling, two heads and all that weird things," Venus laughed.

"It's different." He says firmly. Noticing the strong tone to his, he rolls his shoulders and relaxes a moment before continuing. "As a hunter, you hunt to provide. People need leather for clothes, meat to eat. Over hunting is bad and in poor form, damaging to the ecosystem and disrespectful to nature. But being a Huntsman? Over hunting is their way of life, because Grimm aren't a part of nature, they aren't part of the ecosystem a hunter must respect. They're monsters, that when left uncheck destroy anything in their path. Families, homes, lives. Huntsman don't provide leather or food, they provide the most important things one can provide; protection and safety. It's..." Sherwood trails off, realizing the rant he just happened into. "It's quite different. And I guess it's obvious now that I'm a bit nervous bout that. Don't mean to ramble."

"Well you certainly got the idea in mind, I came to Shade because I was a rebel, my parents refused to let me join so I did, I was transferred to Beacon because..." Venus trailed off at the end, because she did not want anyone to know that she works in a radio station, and until she considers Sherwood as someone she can trust with her life, she is not going to say it. Siren Voice is just an on air persona, nothing more. Venus then realized she was spacing out and coughed. "S-Sorry, I was just now thinking why I even am at a Hunter's School anymore..."

Sherwood pauses for a moment. "To make a difference, I'm sure. Some way, some how." He doesn't say anymore, listening to the wind rustle the trees beyond the cliff face.

After a while, he readjusts his bags with an audible grunt, and completely turns around, with a subdued, yet very warm smile on his face. "Don't suppose you know where the main hall is? All the students without a team dorm are supposed to drop their gear off there. Problem is I don't right have a clue where it is."

"Oh you wanted to get there? I was there twenty minutes ago and wandered to here," Venus said. "I still remember the way."

"Be nice to put my stuff down. If you don't mind showin me, I'd appreciate it." Sherwood says.

Venus nods and looks around before sprinting off into a direction.
