Title: Coming Up Short (CLOSED)
Post by: Walter on November 28, 2016, 08:24:37 AM
It was your average school day at Beacon. Most students were sitting in classes at the time, and a few were enjoying a free period, but two groups were having a slightly more interesting experience. Whether intentionally or due to some scheduling error, a group of first years and second years both wound up with a class in the arena at the same time. A sparring class.

Thus far, it had been a pretty clear victory streak for the second years. The teachers were pleased with it - clearly, their time at Beacon had paid off. Rufus Chocla had been cheering for his fellow classmates as they had fought, waiting excitedly for his own chance to fight. It had been a while since the last time he got the chance to brawl, and was hoping for his opponent to give him a good fight. Even if they were just a first year.

The one-and-a-half meter tall fighter sauntered out as his name was called, taking Flow off of his back and swinging it around a bit to get a feel for his weapon in his hands. He didn't exactly plan to use it much for this fight, and actually went ahead and stabbed the tip of the spear into the ground. If he'd need it, he'd grab it.

He looked over to see that his opponent was a girl, carrying rather formidable looking gear. Rufus, on the other hand, wasn't visibly armed beyond his studded gauntlets.

"Good look in the fight, lass, but I ain't gonna go easy, and don't worry - I don't bite, ain't no ass, but I won't be sorry." He said as he took a fighting stance with his fists raised up. He intended to let his opponent strike first.

Lavender prepared herself, weapons readied on the arena grounds as her opponent made his there as well. Usually it was considered unfair to fight someone with more experience but it was bouts like these that made it even more real. In the real world a highly experienced criminal wouldn't think twice about taking out a greenhorn, so why should sparring be any different? As these thoughts ran through Lavender's head a sudden spout of somewhat unsensible rhythmic words threw her off as she tried making sense of what the upperclassman said.

"Er...what? She replied, almost imagining a giant question mark over her head. Shaking her head she raised her spear next to her large kite shield and got into battle stance. "Nevermind, let's have a good match!

Lavender took the first jab, rushing forward with her weapon while lunging forward, the large broad-headed spear aiming for the brawler's unprotected chest. Lavender planned on rushing her opponent, quick jabs, keeping them at distance with her weapon while using her shield to provide even more of an advantage. Her flexibility was her best bet right in the long run but for now a steady stream of attacks should tire him out or pressure him into taking it seriously.

"Ha!"

The spear shot forward, her opponent at shaft's length while she kept her sights on him and shield raised in a protective position.

Rufus' opponent used a spear and a shield, and she seemed to be planning on keeping him at bay with it. Pretty much what he would have come to expect, really. As her attack seemed to be heading for his chest, Rufus side-stepped and lunged forward, trying to break what distance there was.

He had next to no time to strike, and as he moved, he could sense himself making a mistake, his opponent bound to react quickly. Still, he went for it. 'It'  being, essentially, an uppercut aimed at the girl's arm. Rufus was intending to knock the weapon upwards and give himself more wiggle room just for a short while. If anything, he could at least figure out how well-honed are her reflexes.

Lavender grunted and moved quickly, her weapon was light despite its length and her shield was more than wieldable enough. Closing the distance left more than enough time for Lavender to react as she saw through her opponent's move. Reeling her arm back she shrunk her weapon down to blade form as she moved her shield to intercept the uppercut, a satisfying clunk signifying a successful block. Taking the opportunity, Lavender swung her blade from the side of her shield to get an easy hit off the peculiar rapper, keeping her stance firm and strikes swift.

Reflex check: Pretty damn good. This girl was fast on her feet. Rufus gritted his teeth and took the hit with pride, seemingly just letting himself get hit. There was a small catch, however. With his attack blocked by the shield, he had swiftly unclenched his fist and grasped the top edge of it. And for such a small bloke, he was strong.

The rapper took the attack only so he could deal out his own. He pulled his body up by pushing his arm down on the shield, and went for a rather straightforward jab at his foe's face, letting the blade strike his legs.

"Ah!

Lavender flinched as she got bopped in the face but activated her steam release on her shield, pumping it full of ice and even more fire dust before releasing a highly pressurized blast of above-boiling-temperature gas at point blank range. Reeling in her blade after a succesful hit she followed up with a stabbing motion at the same time she released her steam, wanting to repel the boy before he got another hit in.

On the list of things Rufus wasn't expecting at the time, getting blasted in the face by copious amounts of steam was quite the way up there. The boy recoiled from the attack and hopped back, managing to put his gauntlets up in front of his face in just the nick of time to avoid getting stabbed. This girl meant business.

Still, a plan of attack formed in his head. His opponent was good at dishing out quick, precise blows, and her shield was a no-go. Still, taking hold of it had worked momentarily. He could work with that.

Rufus went for another attack, this time going for a straight charge going into a slide moments before contact with her weapon. It was a risky move, but if he could take her off balance with a kick, he could have a great advantage on his hands.

Lavender saw him rushing towards her a mile away and quickly readied her shield, planning on letting him meet the tip of her spear. The sudden slide caught her off guard however and she barely managed to ready her shield in time and ended up crashing on top of the boy with it instead of successfully planting it down it time.[Not sure if considered auto. pm if something's wrong with it]

"Does anybody fight normally these days? She muttered, flaying the spines out of her weapon before planting it into the ground a few feet away. Shortening the staff while blasting more steam out of her shield, the boy probably still beneath her, she launched forward towards the end of her weapon and gracefully used one more blast to upright herself, snapping her stance in place a moment later.

Rufus' slide had moderate success. It clearly took the girl by surprise and threw her off balance, but she was ready to get up on her feet in no time. And now, a shield had just been smashed on top of him. Super.

Rufus just managed to raise his arm up to keep the shield from crashing right into his chest. This was bad, since he had already seen what the thing can do with the steam and such. The rapper had to act quickly, but that was the norm during spars at Beacon. And what did he choose to do?

He grabbed the shield again. This was definitely bad for his aura in the short run, but he felt he could take some more damage while allowing himself to dish out even more. When his foe started blasting out steam, Rufus only tightened his grip, his gauntlets letting him keep hold of it without slipping. When his opponent tried to stand up, he didn't see why he shouldn't let her.

As such, he used his short little legs to kick off the ground, all while pulling himself along with her movements. He then used the momentum from this to swing his body over the shield, going for a kick at her face this time.

The boy had a a way better grip than she thought he'd have. Taking a face full off boot, Lavender growled and swung upwards, swinging in a wide arc from behind to catch the boy's leg while shortening her shield into a more compact heater form. Whilst swinging, Lavender unlatched the sword's inter-blade locks and let the whip reign freely, the ends coiling around itself like a serpent aiming to strangle its prey. Lavender grunted and twisted hopefully catching the leg between the sharp sided whip while aiming to slam him into the ground afterwards.

Rufus' opponent was just full of surprises, really. The weapon turning into a whip was as unexpected as the steam was earlier, and got his leg good, making him wince. He could expect what she'd try and do next.

But he was still in the air. Before he was slammed into the ground, the rapper twisted his body around, letting one leg be moved by the girl's weapon, while the other was free to move. His face was still facing the direction he was heading in. At this point, he activated his semblance.

"Ain't no thing, when you're taking a swing, I fly like a wing and make your head ring!" He quickly shouted out, his voice escaping his mouth with immense force. This was enough to counteract the force at least a little bit. He tried to take hold of the girl's head briefly, intending to knee her this time. This fight definitely involved a lot more kicking than usual, and he was better with punches, but there was still plenty strength behind his blows.

Of course, there wasn't that much he could do about the fact his leg was caught by the whip until he landed.

"Not this time! Lavender shouted, raising her shield to meet the knee, slamming the hard front into the boy's knee. Not content with that she continued on by yanking further on her whip, tightening its grip while the blades tightened their grip around the leg they were coiled around and released water all around the whip, the liquid propelling the whip faster than usual after it scattered with seemingly increased energy.

Lavender breathed out and continued the slam by shoving knee away, hoping to get some breathing room as her whip did its job.

Being a poetic mind, Rufus would describe his current situation as 'pretty fucked'. His attack had failed, his leg was in pain, and his best choice right now was to get out of this predicament without being absolutely mullered.

As such, he pushed his legs off from her shield, one still wrapped up by the whip, and tried to fling himself free using the momentum. His movements weren't built around an attack this time. Instead, he was trying to minimize damage to himself and get to his, still embedded in the ground. Just in case he failed, though, he pulled out Soul while still in the air and twisted the handle, letting the wire fall out and trail behind him. Lav wasn't the only one that could use a whip.

Despite her hold Lavender let go of the boy seeing as how she wasn't exactly strong enough to keep flinging him around forever no matter how much she wished she could. Grinding the blades off his legs, Lavender retracted the blade to some extent, taking note of the wire that fell down from above. Keeping her shield ready she rushed forward, aiming to go on a more aggressive approach and flayed her whip to and fro, the blades slashing about the ground as the whip revolved around Lavender in short arcs only to quickly snap back towards her opponent.

Well, these pants are going to need replacing. The bottom of the leg was torn to shreds by the blades on the whip. Rufus' aura had definitely taken a good amount of damage by now, but he had to keep fighting. At least he hoped he knew what to expect from his foe by now. Meanwhile Lavender was yet to even see him wield a weapon.

She started to advance on him with whip lashes. Two could play at this game. While still backing up towards his spear, Rufus retaliated against the slashes with swings from his own 'whip', which was really just a rather sturdy wire. but it worked in a pinch. His attacks weren't as precise, instead being wide-arcing swings intended to block incoming lashes. Once he was just a couple meters from his spear, he hopped back for it and grabbed it in his empty hand. His next move was, much like many of his previous ones, risky.

He hopped forward, trying to weave around any lashes. Keeping his spear up in front of him to potentially tangle up his opponent's weapon, he went for another wide swing with the wire, gliding it across the ground intending to sweep his foe's legs.

She had to admit, the guy was pretty good to be able to block her whip slashes and quick enough to stay on his feet despite her aggressive attack. Lavender kept an eye out, her eyes darting back and forth between the thinner wire Rufus used and her own bladed whip, losing concentration for even a bit could spell the difference between self injury and success.

Lavender urged to get on her shield, zipping to and fro with gusto but the current situation dictated a more focused and cautious fight. Whips flying through the air, snapping sounds lashing to and fro, and an incoming spear she had to keep mind of which could potentially catch her weapon and vice versa. The low strike wasn't expected, usually it left too much open but it distracted Lavender enough that she extended her shield to block it while getting he weapon coiled around her opponent's spear by mistake. Grimacing she tried uncoiling it by pumping water through the innertubes but it ended up tightening the grip as it sprayed out of the blades interlocking around the weapon's shaft. Now with but her shield to fend off the whip attacks Lavender was left with but frontal protection and a potential hold on her opponent's longer weapon.

Not wanting to risk getting too close Lavender dropped her shield on the ground and ejected a massive amount of water using ice and fire dust, quickly skirting away on a thin layer of water being formed at the front while the extra force from her semblance caused it to dash away. Confident in her weapon's length, she begun dashing away using her semblance aided water skii while yanking on Rufus' weapon, hoping to drag him along as she started turning to and fro in rapid succession while keeping a firm grip on the weapons.

Rufus was successful in tangling up the girl's weapon with his spear, though the water starting to spry out from it was a bit strange. He had hoped to use such an opportunity to get up close and do some hand-to-hand damage, but his opponent clearly had other plans in mind.

She was using her shield to get away from him, and it was clear that she intended to pull him along. He had two choices: Either try and stand his ground, pulling her instead, or going along with it and using the change that neither of her weapons were in her hand to attack. He chose the latter.

He kicked off the ground, his tangled-up spear raises high as he started hopping after her. He had to constantly hop off the ground, which was hardly an easy feat with his short legs, just to keep up. Still, he tried to do just that, letting her pull him and mostly concentrating on not falling on his face. He would strike the moment she'd stop or take a turn, countering the momentum with a dash, letting go of his spear and going for a blow with his wire, intending to wrap around her, preferably her arms or legs.

Lavender lurched to the side, spinning along her shield-board and felt a sudden tug then a lack of resistance along the end of her whip. Rufus had let go of his weapon and seemed to have shot the wire towards her. Stomping on her shield, Lavender flipped a trigger with her foot halting the board with a sudden burst of water violently spraying in front of her and forced a large amount on the upper corner to burst as well, lurching the board sideways and one final burst at the front to flip the board up prompting Lavender step on the ground once more the wire shot towards her. IN one desperate attempt she used the surrounding water around her and burst it up in a geyser like burst and bonded the molecules that very instant to the point that they'd freeze, compacting them and rearranging the structure to form a makeshift ice-wall a few feet across to stop the wire dead in place, freezing it in place just a few centimeters away form her person.

Feeling exhausted after that rather wasteful display of her ability, Lavender lifted her shield and extended it far enough while crouching down, holding the wall intact while she faced her shield towards it rather than away, unlike other sources of cover. Keeping the wall in tact drained her considerably and she was starting to feel the fatigue as if she had been fighting for over an hour already. Not wanting to waste the ooportunity she kept the wall there and stood her ground, reeling both her whip and the opponent's spear towards herself, kicking the spear towards the wall while hefting her own weapon, now compacted, back into spear form itself.

Lavender eyed Rufus and carefully edged her way around the wall, keeping her front and the wall facing towards him.

Rufus' weapon was stopped once again, and it appeared he was disarmed entirely once more. But that wasn't an issue right now. Despite not restraining his foe physically, he knew that doing that had taken quite a bit out of her. Hell, seeing that the thing was still standing and not melting, it still was.

The rapper cracked his knuckled through his gauntlets, or at least seemed to, since that was pretty damn difficult, and started to leisurely approach the wall. He was still holding the microphone-dagger-whip in one hand, the wire now starting to slide along the ground. He started rhyming as he walked towards the wall, spinning slightly to face his opponent.

"Gotta say, girl, I am impressed; You got good moves, fightin' and zest; But if you face a senior, better give it rest; 'Cause you ain't messin' with anyone, you messin' with the best!" As he spoke his final line, he released a burst of force with his semblance in the direction of Lavender, tugging as hard as he could on the wire in his hands. Pulling it from the ice, he swung it around, releasing the microphone/dagger end from his hand and launching it towards her, followed up by his own fist moments later.

Lavender kept her front to Rufus as he got nearer, to both her and the wall. A powerful blast seemed to have hit her shield and Lavender staggered backwards, barely able to hold her ground as she slid a few feet back. Coming from the shout earlier she deduced it was the boy's semblance, a strong shout after a rather distasteful rap line, as he did earlier while trying to recover his footing. Dropping to one knee she hid behind her shield again just as Rufus managed to pry his wire free and flung the now wire-bound dagger at her.

Now!

Lavender released her hold on the large wall of ice completely cutting off the feed and watching as the massive block begun to shatter and explode. She hid behind her shield, the feeling of strength coming back to her as the connection was cut, and held tight as Rufus approached with fist held high and a dagger clinked off her shield. Shards of ice exploded in all directions some going as far as hitting her shield but most of it dissipating into steam the next instant. A cloud of fog errupted from where the wall once was pelting both Lavender and Rufus with a spray of ice, super-heated water, and eventually steam. Lavender held on tight, her shield resisting the buffeting force and held her spear at the ready as a lower strike smashed into her shield.

Taking the opportunity to move she used a minor blast of steam in front of her shield the second the punch landed and lunged forward with her shield, the force significantly and probably weaker than a full lunge. While the spear traveled forward several edges seemingly flayed out as well, giving the spear an almost devilish fish-bone like appearance, to cling on to or maybe ward her opponent a few paces back.

Things were not coming up Milhouse Rufus, it seemed. Neither of his attacks landed, and he had taken quite a bit of damage from the steam and ice. But he couldn't let off now. If he gave her the chance to strike him again, he'd be out.

Her retaliation wasn't as strong as any of her previous - she was clearly running low on steam, no pun intended. He side-stepped to avoid the attack, hopping around more. He wasn't fresh as a pickle himself, but he still had some energy. He kept jumping around her, changing directions at random intervals and ducking under her weapon as he couldn't allow himself to back off, not when she held the advantage in weapon length.

Every so often, he'd dish out a punch, though none of them were aimed at any part of her in particular, likely to be blocked by the shield. His fifth strike, however, was a much more powerful left hook, preceded by a step to the left. He was trying to get around the shield with it, and, knowing that he might not get many shots in at this point, he gave it as much force as he could.

A powerful hook from the side took Lavender by surprise the second she blocked four other punches. Staggering to the side she grunted and spun her spear back forward, deciding to finally rush the shorter ranged opponent with a flurry of attacks. With a small bit of water pooling at her feet Lavender boosted forward and launched multiple sweeping strikes and a rapid sequence of lunges, keeping her opponent within range by constantly pushing forward and stepping within range. She kept her shield close by, however, to cover for any attacks should he miraculously slip through and prepared another blast of water, not steam, in her shield while also spraying water all over the area from her weapon's ejection slots.

With water spraying all over the place the ground began becoming slicker than usual but Lavender kept on her feet with her semblance aided boosts. Slowly but surely turning the area around her to her advantage she pressed forward with determination and grace, stepping aggressively into the fight while sending unrelenting attacks consecutively.

Getting that hit in was good news for the rapper. But now he had to defend himself, and thus far, it hadn't gone that well. Still, he definitely didn't give up. But with each and every strike his foe made, he could sense himself being thrown more and more off-balance, the ground below turning to ice.

What followed was a move of either persistence or desperation. He just barely avoided a stab from the spear, and as it was right next to his abdomen he jutted his arm down, grabbing the shaft. He knew he was about to fall, but he was doing that on his own terms. The rapper yanked the spear towards himself, sliding his legs forwards and going for a straight plummet towards the ground, hopefully pulling his foe along with him. As he did so, he even tried to slide his short ole legs ahead a bit to knock her off balance.

[OOC: The ground didn't turn into ice btw, just slick with water. Still probably slippery a bit? I guess]

"Slippery little fella aren't you? Lavender said, cocking an eyebrow as she left go of her spear, watching as Rufus slid down to the ground attempting to pull her off balance. She was more than wary about his attempts to grapple, or knock her down, by now and even if she was fatigued by her earlier stunt followed by her aggressive approach she kept her cool and decided to let go for once. Her spear was now tucked under her opponent's arm and he flopped to the ground, starting to slide towards her. Lavender smiled and channeled her semblance to the area around her, particularly the water Rufus was sliding on, and bursted the water right on his back and immediate front. The burst on his back was aimed to launch him back upright while the front to halt his advance as well as evaporate it to prevent further sliding. The latter burst was a bit more taxing but Lavender grit her teeth and timed a powerful shield bash with a good kick from behind, hoping to get a good solid hit the second the unexpected blast sets him back upright and hopefully getting her spear back.

Rufus' had actually thought the fight was over with that move of his. His aura was so close to having him lose, he had thought her falling on him would probably have done it. But it seemed he still had some shot at fighting. Somehow.

He was now in possession of her spear, for a brief moment. He hadn't expected this, but he was decent enough with polearms, and flipped the weapon in his hand to face his foe proper. While he wasn't expecting the burst from below, he was ready to block by mere coincidence.

The power of the blow, however, was quite notable. He had placed her own spear in front of himself, intending to block the attack, but the force actually knocked him back. The short-legged rapper sailed through the air, letting go of the spear and letting it fly off, then tucking into a roll on the ground.

The boy was panting now, and his aura was so low he'd be counted out if she just looked at him harshly enough. But she seemed to be in a similar state, and was disarmed. Though his main issue, the shield, was still present. Shit.

Lavender thought that would've done it, that bash was supposed to have had a solid hit but the boy's reflexes, and her own weapon, prevented that. Damn, her own weapon. Eyeing Winding Anfanc tossed to the side Lavender decided to just make do with her shield. Though she was wary of Rufus' voice if she could somehow slip by and get a hit or two it would signal her win.

Taking a quick glance at the aura levels on the board Rufus was noticeably on the brink of loss while her own aura still had enough to take at least a strong hit before keeling over. With that bit boosting her confidence she charged forward and sprinted towards the boy, shield compacted to make it easier to move around as she dashed towards her unarmed opponent.

As much as Lavender wanted to just toss her shield she knew for a fact that Rufus was not harmless. His strikes proved that he was good at hand to hand and that voice projection had enough punch to knock her back without proper footing. Taking the risk she ran up to him and spun, aiming her shield behind her to give her a propelling boost and extended it just as she turned, using the force to give her enough oomph to hopefully get through another shout.

This was it. This was the attack that would decide the fight. He knew that getting hit would count him out immediately, but he was hardly in a position to avoid it. The best he could do was go out like a champ.

Rufus cracked his knuckled and bent his knees, staring down his opponent. When she started the charge, so did he. The boy wasted no time, as he saw his opportunity with Lavender going for a spin to increase her momentum. He readied a punch and activated his semblance for one last time this match.

"If I am to lose, it won't be by your rules; my words are my weapons and tools, my own way to fall I'll choose!" He shouted out, a burst of force escaping his lips once more, striking the girl during her attack. It slowed her down just slightly, but the charge allowed him to get a hit in: a right hook to her face. His and her speed combined, the strike was enough to knock her aura down to nearly being counted out herself. Meanwhile Rufus' aura was knocked below that limit just from his own punch. The following whack to the face by the shield nearly depleted it entirely.

The young rapper was flung back, going for a not-so-gracious fall and roll along the dirt, stopping about ten meters away. He was covered in dirt and sweat, and his pants had taken some serious damage from earlier, and he had just lost. Still, as he shakily stood up on his legs, there was a smile on his.

"You're damn good lass, you've bested me for sure. I'll let this one pass, but I'm gonna want a rematch one day, so I hope you'll be good for more."

Lavender smiled warmly at Rufus and fave a small nod of approval. It was her first match against a higher yeared student and she somehow came up on top albeit a near loss on her part as well. Approaching Rufus she extended a hand as a sign of good will and said a word of thanks for a match well done.

Rufus gladly shook her hand, as classmates of both gave a cheer. Rufus' mates had less so expected a victory, and more so expected a jolly good show, and that much they definitely got. Their teacher, however, wasn't as pleased with the second year actually losing. Still, with both of them having showed valiant effort, there was little room to complain.

The rapper was just slightly salty about the whole ordeal.
