Title: Nice and Easy Does It [Open]
Post by: Smile Junky on February 08, 2017, 10:07:07 AM
Glas exhaled slowly. Warm sun, quiet afternoon, plenty of quiet: almost the perfect chance for him to lay back and tack a nice, long nap. He would have normally taken that offer too, but if there was one thing that Glas tried to be consistent on it was his relaxation. Today was no different, as evident by him slowly going through his meditation routine out in one of the many open spaces on Beacon’s campus. Hands extended in front of him, he carefully went through the familiar motions as he let his mind clear out and relax.
New school, new life, new everything… Not like I thought I was gonna get used to it immediately or anything. he thought to himself. Glas quietly brought himself into the next form of his movements, jacketed arms gliding through the air in a rhythmic fashion as he entered position after position. His breathing stayed a steady pattern of exhaling and inhaling at all times, and he was completely in his element.
It was almost strange that for once it was because he was actively participating in something physical. Anyone that had seen Glas around would probably recognize him as the guy that seemed ready to fall on his face and sleep on the spot, if he wasn’t already sleeping on his desk at that point. Either that or chalk it up to the weird new guy just being weird.
He eventually reached the end of his first set and centered himself, letting out one last relaxed sigh into the air. “Ahh… Not a bad day at all.”

Diana was taking a leisurely stroll through the Beacon grounds looking for a suitable tree. The stress of her first few days at Beacon was still heavy on her shoulders. Initiation had been tougher than expected, she still didn't really know her teammates, and Vale was more different than she had expected it to be. Still, all that shouldn't matter right now. She had nothing scheduled for the rest of the day and the weather was lovely. Finding a tall oak she laid down using it as a backrest and pulled out a book from her bag.
Finally, she could just relax.
Except she couldn't. The story was interesting enough if a bit too Sci-Fi for her taste, but on every page her mind would wander to one of her real problems. This was supposed to help her relieve stress, not make it worse. After rereading the same page for the fourth time she gave up, she was just too restless.
Getting up she decided to just keep walking, maybe a hike could spend some of her energy. During her walk her gaze would go from student to student, she loved seeing all their unique fashion and weaponry. One guy caught her attention as he was wearing what seemed like a particularly heavy green hoodie. That in itself wasn't too special for Beacon but who wears something like that in this temperature, she had ditched her combat attire for a simple pale blue dress.
Whilst his temperature inappropriate clothes drew him to her attention she became fixated on the movements he was making, they were slow but very meticulous. The striking thing was just how calm and relaxed he seemed to be. Stopping in her tracks she ended up just staring at him as he went through positions. Whilst her eyes were still focused on him her mind was drifting, wondering if she should look into this and trying to make a mental note of the positions. As such it didn't fully register with her when he stopped. Not realising that she was just standing there staring right at him, with a rather stupid blank expression.

Taking advantage of the afternoon off Calen was sitting in the sun, working through a simple worksheet. It was simply busy work and had no place in a combat academy but here it was, a relic of some bygone era.
'Not unlike some of the staff here.' Calen remarked to himself chuckling quietly instead studying the other students around him. Playing a simple game his sisters had taught him, inventing stories to fill in the blanks left by their physical appearance. Take this boy going through some set of slow movements, good and steady breathing suggests confidence in the process. Perhaps a family technique. That jumper must be hot in the sun, wool unlike Calen’s cotton suits would allow very little breathing particularly with such a thick weave. Maybe it was an endurance thing? An additional test for his movements?
Moving his gaze to other students around a small girl caught his eye, her pale blue dress standing out against the greens and browns of her surroundings. Reading, reading slowly, maybe simply not a talent? Or it’s a set book by a class. The girl left for a run and Calen lost sight before he was able to get anything about her. Dejectedly Calen returned to his worksheet and was about to head back to his dorm when he caught sight of the girl again. Staring quite blatantly at the boy in the green jumper; team mate perhaps? No too off balance. Family or childhood friend? Unlikely, you are drawn to things you half remember. Laughing at his imagined histories Calen approaches the two slowly interested to see how this would continue.

Glas’ eyes had been closed as he performed his routine, as he usually did, so the sight of Diana in front of him as he opened them at the end was… a thing. Wasn’t exactly surprising to the first year from Mistral because… hey it happens sometimes. “Yo” Glas said nonchalantly as he slowly raised a hand to greet the new acquaintance “How’s it goin’?” Hadn’t seen her around before, granted there’s bound to be lots of people I haven’t met before ‘round here. Perks of bein’ the new guy.
Of course his greeting also helped him realize that she had been looking at him kinda strange after he had finished. Glas looked around him for a brief second to make sure he hadn’t missed any ‘no meditation here’ signs on his way to his current location. That was his first thought for why his little calming hobby drew such a stare from her, but there didn’t seem to be anything saying he couldn’t be here either. Only one way to find out, really. “So… Everything alright with ya? I’m not sittin’ on your spot or anything, am I?” he asked as he tilted his head to the side inquisitively.
Can’t be that weird to watch, right? Granted I guess I’ve never tried it out any place other than home, so… Maybe they just don’t have this sorta thing around Vale. Huh. Well how else do they chill out after a long day? Glas soon spotted another figure that approached them and greeted them just as calmly as he did Diana. “Hey, how’s it goin’? Not causin’ a problem, am I?”

I'm sure I've heard of something like this before, it's like a meditative martial art or something. she thought to herself. I wonder where it's from, and how's it goin'? she frowned What? that last part made no sense. She blinked, and finally her brain put two and two together as she realized that question hadn't been her own. Her eyes focused again, still looking at the guy, just that now he was looking back.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, I kinda zoned out" she blurted "Long day well, week really" she did her best to put on a smile. This was a bad first impression even by her standards. She laughed in hopes of relieving the tension "Hah, yeah I'm fine, didn't mean to stand there staring and no no it's not my spot or anything. I just haven't seen that kind of meditation before. Is it a Vale tradition?"
She spun on her heal when Glas addressed someone behind them, seeing as how she had already fumbled one introduction she decided to let the newcomer respond first.

‘No problem sir, just admiring the spectacle.’ Answered Calen with a slightly teasing grin. ‘Simple curiosity, like the young miss, I’m quite interested in your poses. Where did you learn them? What are they for?’
Turning to Diana and with a slight bow before offering his hand continued, ‘I’m Calen by the way, Calen Shirke. May I ask your name?’ Noticing the young girl’s nervousness he ensured he moved slowly and predictably to put Diana at ease.

"Naw, it's fine. Wouldn't be the first time I'd been stared at by a pretty girl, y'know?" Glas said casually. "'Course first time was because I accidentally fell asleep on her desk for an hour or two. In my defense we both kinda had similar desks right next to the window, so..." his anecdote trailed off after a while as he looked at Diana and Calen
"Oh yer askin' about the thing? Nah, nothin' Vale about this. Least I don't think so, I'm not from around here. Mistral born n' bred and all that." Glas moved to a more relaxed pose and put his hands into his pockets as he continued to talk with the two. They seemed pretty harmless enough from what he could tell. Aside from the sneakin' up on him thing. Least from how she acted after he stopped she was kinda apologetic about it all.
"Somethin' I picked up from ol' Granny Ginger in my hometown. Says it helps keep her movin' a bit so her muscles don't get all atrophied and everythin'. Since I kinda sleep around a lot to begin with, she got me trying it too. That was when I was back as a kid, just... Kinda stuck with me I guess. Helps when regular ol' naps don't make me relaxed as I'd like too." The fact that it was also the basis of his own personal brand of martial art didn't seem like it was something he should have brought up alongside that explanation. He didn't trust them that much.
"Name's Glas by the by. Glas Mossberg."

As Glas finished his anecdote Diana was rather unsure of how to respond to the compliment apart from giving a more genuine smile than her previous attempt. "Well thanks for not being weirded out" she said rather sheepishly. "As for the meditation you just seemed so calm and relaxed and I guess I've been stressed ever since getting to Beacon, so I was a little curious. I'll make sure to check on my scroll or the library next time, not sneak up on people."
Unsure of if he had taken any offence at being referred to as Valish she decided to play it safe. "And really I didn't mean to assume that you were from here, sorry. I haven't been in Vale long myself, I'm from Atlas actually. Did you move here just for the Academy?" Figuring that being on the safe side was a generally good approach she turned to Calen and said "If you don't mind me asking are you from around these parts or?"
Trying her best to seem more confident she put her hand out to each of them in turn."I'm Diana. Farren, and like I said I'm from Atlas, well Mantle, but you know. Nice to meet you both."

‘Like Master Glas here I’m from Mistral, a reasonably large town on the south coast.’ Responded Calen flatly as he moved passed Diana on his left and offered Glas his hand. ‘But Mantle. You don’t often here about the fallen capital of Atlas, I’m sure you must have stories Miss Farren.’
‘Relaxation? Master Glas, well you picked a good day for it.’ Continued Calen, his eyes rapidly shifting to take in as much of the boy as possible. ‘You know some of those movements could do some damage, if you added a bit of speed but I suppose there is a time for therapeutic relaxation and a time catharsis.’ A smile formed on Calen’s lips as he shifted himself to his right, forming a triangle out of the three students.
‘Considering I have already bothered you both I would normally refrain from asking but could I trouble the two of you for a favour?’ Calen finished, finally meeting the gazes of Diana then Glas.

Glas shrugged his shoulders slightly. “Hey, no worries. Gonna take a lot more than starin’ to weird me out anyway. No harm done.” Just being curious about what he was doing was an alright excuse as far as he could see. Outside looking in, perhaps seeing someone moving weirdly in the middle of a courtyard would probably warrant some questions. “Maybe just a lil’ warnin’ before you give me a stare next time. No need to hide yerself away in a library or anything’”
The other guy, Calen, seemed to be a bit more chill about the whole situation. Glas could respect that. It was just three fellow students chatting it up, right? “Well lookie there, another Mistral native, huh? Never had a chance to visit the coast though, how’d that go?” To be honest, he hadn’t even really heard too many stories about it either, but then again… well he didn’t exactly seek them out either. “Hey, no harm done either” he reassured Diana. “’Least I would know my way around here if I was from Vale, but I still get pretty lost from time to time. Pretty big city, it is.”
She seemed to be an Atlesian, so that was cool. Met quite a few of those around the school, which was a bit odd. Maybe. Beacon seemed to attract all kinds of people to its halls, apparently. “Kinda picked Beacon to just get out of Mistral to be honest. But man, any day’s good for relaxin’” he replied back at Calen. “You just gotta know how to.”
The other guy bringing up that his choice of meditation could also be used to fight made Glas raise his eyebrows, but it would have been hard for the other two to see that from underneath his hood and hair. “Never thought about that, gonna be honest. Just a nice chill way to keep the muscles and mind limber, y’know? Besides, not exactly the ‘fast’ kinda guy myself.” He didn’t believe that either of them was being a bother, but Calen’s next question got him wondering anyway.
“Depends, man. Whatcha got in mind?”

"Not really hide I just meant that if I wanted to learn something similar I would read up on it rather than, well, what I did. But thanks." Diana wasn't sure if he had offered to let her take notes next time or what, but decided not to push it.
There was something to be said for knowing their names, they all seemed a bit more equal in a way which helped her relax a bit. Until a small voice in her head reminded her that she didn't actually know what year they were in, these could be third or fourth-year seniors for all she knew. Well Glas had said he was new here right? Not sure of Calen, he's tall enough to be older, and he did call me young miss. It doesn't help that everyone around here is so freakishly tall. Maybe I should really start wearing heels I've heard that can help with confidence, and I'd at least be taller. Realising that her thoughts were drifting again she snapped out of it concentrating on the conversation.
"We're all international then. I wonder if that's more common here, didn't see too many at the Academy in Atlas" realising she had mentioned the academy she quickly changed the topic "And yeah Mantle. Fallen might be a bit harsh but it's not untrue, It is kinda sad as the city just seems to be slowly dying. Anyone who starts succeeding ends up moving to Atlas, even my parents are there now." She may have lived in Atlas for a few years but Mantle would always be her home.
Despite her brains best effort to get her into a panic Diana did appear to be a bit more balanced, she stood a bit straighter with her hands behind her back. As she calmed down she had to admit it was nice to talk to someone other than her team for once.
"I'll help if I can, what kind of favour did you mean?" she said with a rather curious look towards Calen.

‘Mistral’s southern reaches are a bit more open than the rest of the populated areas of the island, although this brings its own problems the land is resource rich enough to demand a large military presence as well as families of huntsmen sworn to protect individual settlements.’ Replied Calen quickly averting his eyes from Glas’s gaze. Spending a few more seconds playing his game, trying to figure what Glas might look under the jumper he gave up, knowing that he himself is evidence that speed doesn’t always come from the physical.
Genuine sorrow crosses Calen’s face as he turns to Diana. ‘I’m …sorry, home is never easy to leave behind. Even when time makes it unrecognisable. I’ve heard good things about Atlas but good even great is still not home.’ . Giving up on his little game Calen started to rummage through his pack seeing as both students had offered to help and brightened up quickly.
‘A cook is only as good as his ingredients and since moving to Beacon I lack the same knowledge I had of the local produce as I did in Mistral.’ Calen explained taking out three small boxes out of his bags. ‘As such I’m in need of some test subje… I mean second opinions before I start translating my recipies.’ A grin shows that Calen is mostly joking as he opens the boxes revealing three sets of bit sized caramel slices. The difference is the chocolate layer; one is smooth and soft like a ganache, another is sweeter and firmer while the last is almost bitter and firmer still.

Glas nodded. "Ahh, I gotcha. Wouldn't know if it'd be in any book or anythin', so I can't really help you there. Wish I could help you more with it, but ol' Granny Ginger just kinda taught me the movements and how to breath right. The whole 'history' part of it all I kinda forgot." He kinda, sorta slept through the parts that weren't just the exercises themselves. It just wasn't a part that young Glas cared out, and he had still managed to learn how to do it all. Wasn't like he missed too much... right?
"I get whatcha mean, Diane. Couple of folks where I grew up eventually hit it big time and moved closer towards the city too. 'Course being Mistral, wasn't that it was always on the up-and-up either." Glas smirked slightly, but it wasn't exactly one out of jest. Perhaps just a bit of bitterness had sneaked into his otherwise relaxed tone as he said. "Can't really forget your true home, though. It'll still be there no matter where you move away to, that's for sure."
Glad rested his hands behind his head as he looked over towards Calen. Heh, sounded like the dude just gave me the encyclopedia entry for the coast. That's either some local pride or a guy that reads way too many books. Could be both I guess, but... I mean who's got that kind of time? The other guy then mentioned something about cooking, and he produced three small boxes filled with... some kinda food. Teeny bit suspicious...
"Well, guess I can't exactly pass up free food, right?" he said with a shrug as he picked up the slice from the middle. He didn't eat it right away, however. He actually waited to see if Diana was going to eat one herself before going in on it.

Diana had read about Mistral but it was nice to hear about it from two natives. "I've read about the beauty of Mistral, sounds amazing to have such varied climates in one country. But yeah I have heard stories of a black market and other grey area trades in Mistral, but I thought that was just a stereotype or something. Is it really, that bad?" she asked looking towards Calen to see if he seemed to agree.
Whilst she isn't the best at picking up social cues, ever since she learned her semblance Diana has been good at picking up on some of the emotions of speech. It made it all the more touching to hear the sincerity from them both when mentioning home. Calen seemed to mirror her own feelings but there was something that seemed more, aggressive from Glas. Perhaps some family or friend had left his hometown to strike it big or something, and abandoned him there or something, she couldn't really put her finger on it.
She thought briefly of her home again. Whilst she missed Mantle it was first when thinking of her family that a single tear dropped from her eye. I should really give them a call again soon, how long was Allo's training going to be anyway? she wiped the tear away and said to the others "Yeah can't really forget one's home" adding a smile she finished "I'll just have to make sure I get back to them when I can."
As they were talking Calen had pulled out some boxes from his bag and opened them, she giggled at his test subject joke and responded "As far as requesting favors go, giving us sweets probably won't be one of the harder ones to do." and she gladly took a slice at random as she didn't realize that they weren't all the same, she had also not noticed Glas' reluctance. She bit into a corner and covered her mouth with her hand as she spoke "They're delicious, the chocolate is fantastic, do you remember where you got it? Although, the caramel seems... really sweet. But I'm really not that familiar with caramel so it's probably perfect and all, I'm just more used to making pastries." The slices may have been bite size but Diana still managed to take three bites to get it all.

‘It’s a funny place, Mistral, innovates culturally as much as Atlas does technologically. It leaves the whole place without a centre, moral or otherwise’ Calen continued, then he glanced up at Glas ‘Or at least that is my experience of the land, I had quite the singular upbringing.’
Calen’s smile widened as the other students, not noticing Glas slight pause, partook in his slices. ‘Thank you Miss Farren, the cocoa is from a small plantation off the east coast, they do tours I believe but the only store I know which stocks their chocolate is a small café on the harbour. They sell it in blocks so it shouldn’t be hard to add to your own creations. Speaking of which how are you finding the change in ingredients? I couldn't imagine much wheat grows up in Atlas but with their technology I suppose anything is possible.’
Not allowing much of a pause so the topic doesn’t turn back to the homes they seemed to have all left behind Calen asked ‘So how long have you all been in Vale? I’ve been here for a little over a year studying for the enrolment exam.’

"Plenty of beauty, yeah. Got plenty of nastiness hiding behind it too. Some places just hide it better than others do is all." Glas said with a shrug. "Sometimes it's in yer own town, and you just have to live with it. " he seemed to be quite opinionated despite his rather chill behaviour, even if none of his body language seemed to show it.
Seeing that Diana didn't immediately convulse after eating the candy, Glas popped his own into his mouth. He seemed to fully savor the tastes that it presented, fully grasp the complex combinations that were put into it. His own response even was delayed from Diane's own, before he eventually nodded and replied: "'S good"
Starting to get a handle on these two, or at least I think I am. Seem decent enough folk, care about thier folks, thier homes. Glas nodded slowly at seemingly nothing in particular as Calen kept the conversation going with his question about thier time in Vale.
"I've been here about... since the semester started. However long ago that's been. Enrollin' here's been the first I've ever stepped inside the place."

"Shame that it has that kinda side. That being said I would love to visit Mistral at some point, I could certainly do with learning more about the culture at least." she knew that it was unlikely that she could make the trip anytime soon though she still hoped to someday visit Mistral as well as Vacuo and Menagerie.
"Well there are a few ways to grow crops on Solitas. As far as I know in Mantle they grew in naturally warmed caves just adding artificial lighting, however in Atlas they have some pretty high-tech greenhouses." While this wasn't her area of expertise or anything she was fairly certain she had heard something along these lines. "That being said Atlas grown crops are on the high end at this point. Back home we would generally get things that were imported, not quite as fresh but.. affordable. There are loads of cargo ships that leave Atlas with dust so just makes sense to fill them for the trip back."
"I'll have to have a look for that café" whilst she was genuinely intrigued, there was also a little concern at how expensive it would be to buy chocolate from a café. "As for ingredients I use I'm not as knowledgeable about them as you are. I tend to just use flour, eggs, butter, maybe yeast so haven't really noticed much difference."
Diana slightly nodded as Glas talked about coming to Vale before answering herself "Pretty much the same, I got here two or three days before initiation, never been outside of Solitas before then."

'Thank you Master Glas for your kind words.' Replied Calen happily once again meeting the gaze of Glas before turning to face Diana 'I hadn't heard of such advancements from Atlas, although I've been out of the loop for a couple of years and even before, to my shame paid little attention to the outside world. I guess that's just another gap I can rectify here and experience afterwards. Also if you would ever like help with your own creations Miss Farren know you can call on me, it's the least I can do as repayment.'
'So does that mean you both came up through the combat schools? I'm curious as to how the academies compare, I personally have found the classes to be a very strange way of learning.' Calen's former slight desperation in his tone has melted into curiosity as the subject seems to be sticking.

"Ain't saying you have to avoid it entirely, just might want to keep a close eye on your wallet when you go. Place still has some pretty parts to it. And I guess if you like artsy kind of stuff it'd be a good place to spend some time." Glas however, was not an artsy kind of person. At all. He just couldn't... really understand most of it when it all got down to it. As much as he also didn't get the hang of his parent's work either, at least things made more sense there.
Part A goes into Part B, rotates around Part C; that's the kind of stuff I get. Can't begin to tell ya why that color and this color make people go 'oohhh' and 'aahhhh'. Diana went on to talk about so many different ways that people could grow crops and stuff, and it all sort of started to fly over Glas' head. Heck, it even was starting to just make him doze off because he had no idea what they were even discussing.
Until Calen referred to him as 'Master Glas" and the thick-coated boy woke up. "C'mooon, I'm not a 'master' anythin'" Glas drawled. "Just call me 'Glas', alright? And yeah, I got myself transferred here as soon as I could. Felt like leavin' Mistral rather quick-like and such. Worked out well enough I suppose, just kinda wish more classrooms had desks next to windows, y'know? Best place to take a nap."

Seeing the response from the other two it occurred to Diana that framing techniques seemed to make for rather poor small talk, shouldn't be that surprising really. While Calen's response had been qualified with why he may not of heard of the tech, the fact that he hadn't completely sapped Diana's confidence on the matter. Rather concerned that she was just making stuff up she decided not to pursue the topic further, responding to his cooking suggestion instead. "I wouldn't want to inconvenience you, but next time I might shoot you a question if you're okay with that?"
Looking back to Glas and the Mistral conversation she continued. "I'll have to make my way there eventually then, heck once I'm a huntress that should be a piece of cake. Besides in a few years I might actually be talented enough to actually get some inspiration from it, so far my drawing is even worse than my baking" she laughed. Whilst not entirely true it was a bit of a touchy subject. Baking she had picked up over time here and there, whilst drawing she had actively been trying to learn though failing so far.
Diana was rather curious if there was a reason Glas had wanted to leave Mistral quick-like, or just that he wanted a change of scenery. He was a very hard person to read, that hood really didn't help. "Yeah that's right. Regular combat school in Atlas and advanced here at Beacon" she considered just leaving it there but decided against it, she didn't want to risk being caught in a lie later. Looking towards the ground she added very matter of factly "Well I was at Atlas academy for a bit but didn't really like it there, so I came here." making eye contact again and shrugging she added "The classroom setting works rather well for some subjects, and there are quite a few more practical lessons."

Slightly phased at Glas’s preference of address Calen answered quickly. ‘Of course Glas I shall endeavour to remember for later as well. Miss Farren, I’d be happy to answer any questions you have. However, for my benefit, are you satisfied by my terms of address? Or is there something else you’d rather be called?’ Frowning and letting most of the conversation pass him by instead watching the two students carefully. Realising his question had hit both of their nerves Calen decided to try less personal questions.
‘Hobbies?’ Calen asked, filling up the next lull. ‘We got sleeping, drawing and cooking. Anyone got anything else? I’ve always been a dancer myself but I’m afraid of the many things Beacon has on where I’m from its dance scene is not one of them. But I suppose that’s life.’ Finishing with an exaggerated huff.
Reaching into his pocket Calen took out a pencil and a small pad of paper scribbling his scroll number twice before handing them to Glas and Diana. ‘Before I forget, if you have any cooking questions feel free to call at anything, I keep an odd schedule show I’ll usually be up and around and Glas if you ever need a hand, please don’t think any of it.’

“S’alright, man. Don’t gotta make too much of an effort for me, not like I’m gonna bit yer head off or somethin’” Glas reassured Calen. It was really just more of an annoyance thing than any kind of personal insult to the young man. Of course, being called ‘master’ all throughout the day would probably rub him a little raw if he had to be honest. At least his fellow Mistralian said he’d try to remember. Good start, I guess. Just my first day meetin’ the guy, can’t judge him too hard I suppose…
Glad raised an non-visible eyebrow at Diana bringing up drawing, though. “You tryin’ to become an artist or somethin’, Diane? If yer lookin’ to be inspired by somethin’, give Windpath a try when yer ready enough to visit. It’s got a cliff overlookin’ some of the swamps that all the artsy people went crazy over all the time. Apparently if you looked at it the right way at sunset it’s all kinds of beautiful or somethin’.” Of course, that meant that a lot of the artsy kinds of folks made regular trips to Windpath, and that was always a time that the less reputable guys had decent paydays. The memory alone caused Glas’ lips to twitch downward in the briefest instance of a frown before his chill returned along with his neutral expression.
Their topic shifted back towards hobbies for a bit longer, and Glas wracked his brain to try and come up with something else to share. “Mmm… Guess I haven’t had much chances to indulge in it here in Vale, but always liked going to little musical performances. Couple of guys sittin’ around, doin’ their own thing. Pretty chill time to have around those, yeah.” Without traveling into the surrounding city, Glas couldn’t be sure if there was anything like that. Maybe he’d get lucky, or maybe that was something else he’d leave back in Mistral. At least it was something that he could live without if absolutely necessary. “Oh, and thanks” he added as Calen offered his scroll number to him and Diane. He slowly reached out and grasped the scrap of paper and put it into his jacket pocket without looking at it as he continued on with his conversation.

"I mean only teachers have ever really used my last name, everyone else just calls me Diana or some nickname. So I'm more used to it being Diana, but it's up to you what you want." She didn't mind the name too much as it was more common for some higher ups to speak like that in Atlas. However very few would where she was from.
"Oh no no, don't have any future as an artist." Diana laughed at Glas' suggestion. "Have enough to deal with the hole huntress thing. I just wanted to have a creative outlet or something along those lines. Back home I kept being told reading didn't count as a hobby so I picked up drawing." she shrugged before continuing " Windpath does sound lovely though, I'll have to try to make my way there at some point." She tilted her head slightly to see if it helped for looking under his hood, it didn't. While he was being perfectly pleasant though she found it rather bizarre not seeing his entire face when talked. "Do you go to a specific genre for those performances or just whatever?"
Turing to Calen she asked "You dance? that's awesome. Is it like ballroom dancing or more, I don't know, modern? No dance clubs in Vale, or just haven't had the time?"
Diana took out her scroll as the note was handed to her "Cheers", she quickly added the number as a contact and sent a message to Calen that simply said "Hi. This is Diana Farren's number." Taking a pen out of her pouch she wrote down her own number on the same piece of paper and handed it Glas "Here's mine too if you want it"

'Well if you truly don't mind Miss Farren ....I've never claimed to be most students.' A small giggle escaped Calen's lips before he continued. 'Do you have a preference on subjects for your art? Landscapes must be difficult with so much to draw and while still lifes or portraits have less moving parts they are on a lot smaller scale requiring more detail.'
The concept of purely musical performances was a new one to Calen. Turning away slightly he let his mind wander, dreaming up possibilities. A opera house with it's centre piece being the orchestral band, but that'd hardly be relaxing; smaller perhaps? Outside under a full moon and along side a fire? Guitars and basic drums replacing the legions of violins and wind instruments? Or maybe it's a jazz thing.
Shocked out of his haze by Diana's question Calen paused slightly before responding. 'Yes ballroom or ballet will always be my second love but really I can enjoy anything where you have room to move. However that seems like just another way I'm unlike most students the ''dance clubs'' are a bit to heavy one the club for my taste. Don't get me wrong I'm sure there is great skill involved in dancing so close together it is simply not a skill I possess.'
Glancing down at his scroll as the message come through Calen continued with his question. 'What about life in Vale in general? It took a lot for me to get used to living in the big city but Forever Fall isn't that far away and there is something to be said about the security.'

“Diana’s a fine enough name. I’m not one for fancy titles if I can help it anyway, too much extra stuff to remember. Kinda don’t have too much of an imagination for makin’ up nicknames either…” Glas said as she scratched his head, well, hood. Come to think of it, he hadn’t had to worry about nicknames back in Mistral either. If people didn’t call him by his name, then it’d just be the ‘Mossberg Boy’. That name wore quicker on his nerves than anything else back home…
“Ah come on, just because yer not great at it now it doesn’t mean you won’t in the future. Isn’t art the kinda thing that you get better at the more you do it? Sorta like huntsman trainin’ if you think about it, y’know?” It seemed that his laidback nature didn’t mean that quitting was something he was a fan of. “Shouldn’t let people tell you what you can have as a hobby either, though. Live yer life the way you want to, Diana.” Glas crossed his arms behind his head and nodded knowingly at her, despite getting an odd tilted look at her.
“Dancin’ takes a lot of coordination too. You been doin’ it long there, Calen?” Glas asked curiously. He hadn’t met too many dancers around, and since it wasn’t exactly his speed anyway it wasn’t something he sought out either. Cooking, dancing; guy must be pretty popular around here. “Vale’s a big city at least, bound to be some kinda dance place to yer likin’. Does Beacon have one of those school dance things here too? Had a few back in Mistral but… Well that’s not exactly my scene.”
‘Wallflower’ was only a small description of how much Glas didn’t want to be there those days.
“No place specific, just whenever a couple good ol’ guys decided to sit down together and play for a while. Town square, some on the side of the road. Couple of ‘em practiced underneath a big tree I liked to nap in, so I always got a free show” he said with a shrug. “Don’t need a specific place to make music, really.” Everyone got into the habit of exchanging their Scroll numbers, so Glas made sure to do the same as he registered both Calen and Diana’s into his own Scroll. A quick message consisting of ‘Yo’ to the two of them revealed his own number, and they were now connected. At least in the sense of being able to call each other. “Thanks for the digits. Kinda curious about city life too, now that you bring it up, Calen.”

She would honestly preferred him to just use her regular name and had expected him to do so when offered, but like he said he wasn't like most students. Considering that he seemed to like these titles she asked, "Would you like me to called you mister Shrike then? or should it be master?"
"Both of you are severely over estimating my drawing ability, I haven't been doing it for long." already a bit uncomfortable with being the centre of one of their topics she blushed slightly at their relentless support. "As for what its mostly just sketches, how a room is arranged or simple portraits, from memory. Haven't really tried my hand at landscapes much, the small details there are so hard to get looking right." She shifted her weight uncomfortably as Glas was telling her to stand up for herself "They weren't wrong though, the drawing and a few other things they suggested has helped me become more social. Guess it only remains to grow a spine, hah.." she tried to laugh to play off her self deprecating joke.
Not that familiar with dancing she was surprised that a man was doing ballet as she generally pictured women. About to ask it occurred to her that it could come off as a rather rude question, she was honestly just curious at how common it was but thought better of asking. "I've never been to one so guess my mental picture of a dance club is a bit off then. Honestly I know next to nothing about dance in general, but I'm sure its a great hobby. Have you ever performed your dances?"
"Haven't been here too long so not sure of what will be different. Biggest so far is obviously the climate" she did a little half spin that made her skirt flare out a bit, crossing her legs at the ankles "I could never wear anything like this outdoors in Atlas. As for the city i haven't really explored it yet"

'Only if you feel comfortable with it Miss Farren, I personally use these forms of address simply because it was how I was raised and was drilled in pretty hard. After all there is nothing more impolite than forcing someone to do something they don't want to do.' Replied Calen trying to maintain a comforting tone, he spoke the truth but the titles also helped him maintain some emotional distance. 'And Glas and I aren't necessarily wrong, just temporally off. You'll get there.'
'There are some a couple of studios around the city and they put on performances, luckily as one of the few guys I end up in most of them even if my attendance isn't what I'd like it do be with missions, school, cooking and what not. I've been dancing since I could walk and it's still my second love but sometimes you just want to stretch your legs, drink more than you probably should and do something you'll regret in the morning.' Calen laughed. 'And Glas don't worry we will find the right person to tempt you off that wall before the yearly dance, even if you have two left feet.' Calen's laughter grew steadily but it was more cheerful than his usual slightly mocking tone.
After taking a few moments to calm down turned back to the other students Calen continued. 'I guess they would use guitars and some small drums, in the performance I mean. I just can't imagine people lugging piano's or double basses far. Some use the forests not far outside the city to do something like that, they light bonfires which is kinda illegal but as long as they clean up after themselves to cops leave them mostly alone. Not sure how relaxing it is though, it's more a party scene. As for the city itself it's something you really have to experience for yourself, particularly if you aren't used to city life. Its spread out enough to never feel claustrophobic while the lack of designated quarters mean you can keep finding new shops or entire markets after months of looking. I try to always get a good feel of where ever I am but I still don't think I've seen all Beacon has to offer.

Glad shrugged. "Can't really overestimate somethin' I haven't seen before either, can I? For all I know you got yerself a talent for it, it's just yer mind holdin' you back. 'Course I'm not the best critic either. Might want to give me and Calan a shot to look at it, at least. Might make you feel better about what you got." This girl certainly seemed to be putting herself down a lot over just a hobby... Probably had something in her past that started it all or- Nah, nah... No reason to try and dissect her life, or anyone else's, really.
"Everything takes time to master, can't really be born perfect, 'least in my book. It's why we go to the Academy, isn't it?" There were probably schools for art stuff too, right? He might have heard about some of them in passing back home in Mistral, but it also wasn't something really looked into either.
Glas shook his head slightly at Calen's insistence at trying to get him to be in a more dancing mood. That wasn't exactly likely to happen, not with this Mistralian. "Calen, even if I had three left feet I don't think I'll be dancin' anytime soon. Some people are dancers, some aren't. Pretty sure I'm squarely in the 'not dancin'' camp at the moment." There weren't enough dance clubs in Vale to get him to start picking it up as a hobby, no matter who insisted.
Still, Glas did watch as Diana did a little twirl in her dress, which drew a tiny smile and a nod from the hooded young man. "Guess that's a little true, Diana. Place feels pretty good to me, although I can't really complain about it either way. Any weather's good nappin' weather, after all. Still... Guess if I find myself without much else to do around here I might start walkin' around Vale some more. Gonna be livin' here for the next couple of years, right? Probably need to get a good lay of the land at some point."

Really sorry for the long wait this time, uni has been hell this week.
"Then I'll stick to Calen for now, we were never big on titles back home."
"Sorry I didn't mean to come off as so dismissive. I appreciate the compliment, It's just that once people hear that you draw they seem to assume that you're some incredible artist. I can do some reasonable portraits but that's about it. As you said its something you learn with time, I just have to spend more time at the firing range than in a sketchbook." she said whilst thinking that she must be horrible to talk to, can barely go two sentences putting my foot in my mouth."Yeah I guess I'll just have to show you guys sometime." she said though secretly hoping they would forget.
About to take part in the dancing discussion she thought better of it. Calen seemed to be pushing for Glas to take part in a 'yearly dance' of some kind, if she joined in now she could have that deflected onto her which would just be the drawing mess all over again.
"Music and bonfires at night next to the forest sounds lovely. The partying, well not as much for me at least. So far I've really just ignored the city and stayed on campus but Glas is right, we're going to live here now so need to figure out where things are." she said looking towards the city "Glad to hear it isn't claustrophobic, Atlas is very densely built so it sure feels that way. I'll just have to bite the bullet and go exploring, there's a map on our scrolls so how lost can I really get. Anywhere in particular you would recommend checking out, or well... any places I maybe shouldn't go alone?" she asked whilst her own voice was mocking her in her head. Just what people want in a huntress, afraid to go alone in a city, brilliant.

'And as such Calen I will be Miss Farren.' Announced Calen with an elaborate flourish and bow.
'There isn't much organised crime in the city, except for a few bars around the docks but they are pretty easy to spot. Past the shopping centres and a bit up from the docks you have the best part of the city, in my opinion. Design wise it fades nicely into the start of Forever Fall and the markets are impressive, it is basically on the other side of the city though. The only real trouble you might have are with pick pockets but awareness should get you through unmolested. As for landmarks the school makes a good one, going out from here you've got large commercial or retail shopping centres to the right and the smaller centres with their cafes and deli's closer to the residential bits.' Calen responded smiling at the thought that less than a year ago he was finding all this out or hearing it from others. I wonder what they will be doing in another year? What will I be doing?
Chuckling again from some of his imaginations Calen continued his questioning. 'So if we are all from elsewhere has anyone thought of travelling further afield? Miss Farren you mentioned Mistral but is there anywhere else? I've always wanted to go to Vacuo, I've never been good with the heat but some of the spices are to die for and they have some of he world's leading dance academies, outside of Mistral.

"It's fine, Diana. Means you got yerself a bit of humbleness to ya. Never a bad thing to have." Glas' hand left its pocket briefly to give her a thumbs-up before returning. "And yeah, suppose we'll all be spendin' time at the gun range a lot anyway. Probably want to keep your full attention on that." They'd come to Beacon to become Huntsmen and Huntresses, not artists. Didn't mean that she couldn't practice drawing on her own time though, thankfully the school had a good bit of downtime in-between things as well. Always good to have a hobby or two, I suppose. Dancin', drawin', and nappin'; prett well-rounded group we got here. he thought, amused.
"Well if you ever need practicin', you could always do one of those portrait things of me. I'm pretty good at staying still for a long time, y'know?" He'd seen a few artists and their models sitting around back in Mistral before, and he had briefly thought that it was a pretty solid deal for both of them. Someone gets to take a picture and the other gets to relax. Of course, the hard part would be sitting there still for such a long time without falling asleep.
Calen was helpful enough to give them a bit of a breakdown of what the city was like, and Glas nodded along in understanding. "Got it, stay away from the docks and everythin' else is peachy keen. Never been too much of a shopper, but I sure can appreciate a good cafe every once in a while. Might have to check those out." Guess there's no way of escapin' crime entirely is there? Still, this place is squeaky clean compared back to home. Small victories, I suppose...
"Y'know I've... never really thought about goin' anywhere else to be honest. Only real time I planned to leave my home was when I came here, but I haven't had any plans for what happens after. Guess I'm goin' to have to just listen 'round and see if hear of any good places to go. Otherwise..." Glas shrugged slightly "I got nothin'"

"Thanks Glas, I've just never been good at striking the balance for humbleness" awkwardly returning his thumbs up before putting her hands behind her back. "And thanks for the offer but I generally practice from memory or with photos, it takes quite a while I wouldn't want to bore you for that long."
"We can't forget why we're really here, so try to spend a fair amount of time practicing my shots." she looked the two over to see if they were carrying their weapons, her rifle was back in its locker. "If you don't mind me asking what kind of weaponry do the two of you favor?"
"Well I wasn't really planning to go to any bars so I'm sorted there, but I'll have to check out the markets and the shops, been thinking of getting some more climate appropriate clothes." She decided against elaborating on how much she was loving Valish fashion. The one girl in the group and i talk about buying clothes... though some heels might mean I don't look like a midget at least.
"Like I said It would be great to see Mistral at some point, the other big one for me would be Menagerie. The fanus aren't always treated that well back home, Vale is better but I would still like to see how a society of fanus operates. Though thats assuming they'll want visitors, let alone from Atlas." Her father had worked with many fanus in the mines but from what Diana had seen they were always so tired and hopeless, she hoped that in a place like Menagerie they would have it better.

Taking a few steps back upon the mentioning of weapons Calen then undid his top shirt button and lossened his tie before drawing his blade, it's red and gold hues catching the afternoon sun for an impressive display of colour. 'A simple weapon for a simple man.' Calen remarked casually, his eyes remained locked on the blade and after giving himself a few seconds extended the shaft into it's glaive form. 'I've never had a talent at range combat, its one of my many weaknesses, I lack the patience or trust to line up a good shot.' Calen continued as he examined Diana closely again thinking and his eyes glazing over slightly. She lacks the shoulders of an archer or the arms of a crossbowman... crossbowwoman...crossbower that leaves guns. Rifles have the balance of probability but then again Atlas tech would make her lack of musculature meaningless. But she did say before that that wasn't her life so... that leaves rifles I guess. 'What about your rifle Miss Farren, it's not with I see not unless it folds up very small indeed but describe it if you can. I tend to be more interested in what others see in their weapons that what I do.' Calen finished, his eyes refocusing returning to his previous slightly hungry gaze.
'And I wouldn't swear off the bars entirely, even if you don't drink there is a delightful way of eating some of them offer. 'Tapas,' it would be easiest to think of them as a selection of small plates make for an interesting way of changing up for diet and sampling the local food. But yea give the docks a miss unless you need fresh fish.' Calen added as he turned to Glas trying to guess what his weapon might be but that jacket made it hard to get a good look at his figure. 'Come on Glas there has to be something that you heard of before that you want to see. Maybe from a fairy tale or old story? Or even simply wanting to nap on every continent? But yea I'm sure we'll all have many more reasons to travel after this is all over even if it is just to see our more adventurous team mates.
'Menagerie Miss Farren? You're right it would be interesting to see how they get along. I have to confess I only met my first fanus a few years ago and as such have always had quite an impolite level of curiosity about them. There are a few around campus but none in my team nor I've spent much time with.' Calen mused, he hadn't seen much brightness from the fanus he did interact with and that coloured his idea of the entire group. This gave him very low expectations of Menagerie but intrigued none the less.

Glad tilted his head slightly at Diana. “You kiddin’? Sit in a chair or somethin’ while you draw me? Sounds like my kinda way to spend an afternoon. I mean, unless you try and get me to make some kinda pose or somethin’ in the meantime. Might not work so well.” It’d definitely mess up Diana’s portrait if Glas nodded if and fell down in the middle of drawing. Although the mental image of such a thing caused the corners of Glas’ mouth to slightly turn upwards in a grin.
“Yeah, I try to get my time in the range in every once in a while. It’s… a little tough at times, if I’m gonna be honest. For a couple of reasons.” Things were starting to move more into the territory of his weaponry, and Glas was starting to feel familiar prickles of paranoia on the back of his neck. It was something he tried not to openly discuss with most people, even if they seemed like pretty cool people. Calen however, was more than happy to show off his own weapon. One that actually didn’t have a gun in the blasted thing at all, that was… quaint. Definitely kept his long-range options limited, unless his Semblance was suited for long-range in that case-Man, why am I over-thinking this stuff? Whatever Calen does with how he fights is up to him. Just because he wants to spill the beans on how he does combat doesn’t mean I should.
Luckily for Glas, Lackadaisy was still hidden pretty well behind his coat, so he didn’t spill all of his beans just yet. “…I’m a rifleman meself. Keeps me away from gettin’ too close to any Grimm or anythin’, which is fine with me.” He still didn’t want to be totally rude either. Just giving up basic details like that was well enough. “Not a fan of fish though. It’s always tasted pretty… samey to me. Couldn’t blindfold me and give me a few different kinds and expect me to tell ya which was which. I’d appreciate the free food, though. And I mean, maybe sleepin' in every continent is a goal worth lookin' into. When I'm older. ”
Then the conversation thankfully shifted over more towards talking about each others Fanus experiences, which was a much less concerning topic of conversation for Glas. Of course, he also didn't have too much to add to it either... "I knew a Fanus girl back in Mistral."
And that was all he had to contribute.

"You're in luck no poses needed for a portrait, not sure when but I might take you up on your offer." Though her initial thought was to never bring it up again something about his relaxed nature intrigued her, Diana was many things but generally relaxed was not one of them. 'It wouldn't be a terrible idea to try to imitate him, not anytime soon of course but at some point in the future.'
Diana admired the craftsmanship of Calens blade, the colours, the golden hue, the elegant curve, it was genuinely beautiful to observe. "It seems like a Mistral weapon, it's almost a work of art in and of itself. But you don't have any ranged capacity?" She tried her best to not seem judgy, in reality she was just concerned.
"Nope. no weapon with me now, I could never get the hang of those heavily collapsable techniques anyway, they would just freeze solid whenever outside. Besides I don't think I could make it that small anyway, my weapon of choice is a fairly large rifle... oh you said so alre.. well I guess It must have been me who said so? I think." she wasn't sure but couldn't remember having mentioned it, or had she, maybe he had just seen her with it before. "Its design is that of someone with little engineering creativity I'm afraid, we were told to have both ranged and melee capacity so I put a sword on a rifle. That was too heavy so I made the blade detachable, oh and I added a dust barrel." looking towards Glas she added "Yeah it's nice to not have to get too close to those monsters.".
Smiling she simply said "I'll make a note to be on the lookout for 'tapas' then."
"Yeah I know what you mean, I'm incredibly curious about them but I really don't want to risk causing offense or anything. I was hoping to met some here, but haven't yet." as she was speaking she started getting a bit worried if it was wrong of her to use words such as "them" to describe a people.

'Have you ever tried sketching the outline in person then finishing it later from memory or a photo? That might be a good middle ground although I have no idea how effective it would be.' Calen responded cautiously, despite being from Mistral art have never been his strong suit and didn't understand the reason for live models but he knew artists seemed to prefer it. 'I'm sure that we can remain awake for that.' Calen continued as he gave Glas an apologetic smile.
Retracting the shaft into it's sword form Calen carefully offered the weapon to Diana hilt first. 'Weapons are funny things, this has been with me through so much that sometime it feels as a part of me and yet it should be nothing more than a tool. Like a pencil or ladle but people give them names and treasure them above almost anything.' Calen opened his mouth again as if to continue instead shook his head and changed the subject.
'Balance of probabilities. Rifles are more common than pistols and you mentioned shooting range before. Archers tend to build muscle in their shoulders crossbow...ers in their arms. You could throw knives but there is a posture in that, without the elasticity of strings or explosive power of dust you need to put your entire self behind each throw.' Calen explained as if it was the simplest thing in the world. 'But yea no ranged weapon here, luckily I haven't encountered a Grimm with one either so between each other at least we are even.' Calen smiled before turning back to Glas. 'Perhaps Miss Farren and I can look out for nice, peaceful places on missions or the like. It'd be a good reason to keep in touch.
Calen chuckled slightly at Glas's comment about fish. 'I'll pretend I didn't hear that Glas, everyone should be able to tell the difference between an Atlesian river cod and a Mistrialian rainbow finned snapper. I'll tell you what perhaps next time we meet I'll prepare some and we can put that palate of yours to the test. Maybe Miss Farren could bake a fish pie.' Shaking his head at the absurdity of both of them.

Glas nodded slowly. “Sure thing, just give me a ring on the ol’ Scroll whenever you fancy a try. Most likely won’t be doin’ anythin’ in the meantime.” He had to admit that he was a bit curious about what it would like to be drawn. Just a bit, though. He honestly had enough time dealing with art and the people that made it back home in Mistral. Speaking of Mistral… Heh, ‘seems like a Mistral weapon’. Suppose that’s something the ol’ Lackadaisy has going for it. No one’s probably gonna take a look at this haphazardly put together thing and think it came anywhere close from Mistral. Almost a shame I know better, huh?
Diana seemed to be in agreement about keeping their distance though, but it meant Calen there was the odd man out. “I mean, I sort of see your point there Calen, but I think if we start seein’ Grimm that can shoot back at us we’ll have some bigger problems than just ‘bein’ even’. Besides, it’s perfectly natural to have that kinda feelin’ about your weapons. We trust ‘em to keep us alive when fightin’ Grimm, and they can only do that if we keep ‘em clean and ready. Kinda symbiotic in a way.”
Calen certainly had a talent for… categorizing people. How long had he been watching Diana to make all those assumptions about the kind of weapon that she used? He was kinda thankful for his coat now. Or heck, maybe he was able to tell stuff about Glas just from what he wore. Just how far does this guy’s readin’ go? And why’s he doin’ it so much to people he just met? To Glas, Calen was looking pretty suspicious at the moment… “…Yeah, suppose that would be pretty good. You guys see anythin’ that looks comfy enough snap me a photo or somethin’. I’d appreciate it.”
“And like I said, I’m not turnin’ down a free meal if it’s offered. Even if it’s not somethin’ I particularly like to eat. Throw in some kinda beef dish alongside it and you’ve got yourself a deal there, Calen. “ And as long as they didn’t try to eat anywhere near those docks. He could do without any extra trouble in his life.

Again sorry for the long wait, like I said lots of coursework to do at the moment should calm down next month.
"I actually tend to do all my sketching from memory, occasionally with some photos. Can't say I've ever tried to do a mix like that but it could work. It would be the opposite though. The outline isn't that hard, capturing eyes and facial proportions are." Giving some serious thought to the idea her speech was more matter-of-fact than so far, with none of her pauses or filler words. Looking back at Glas she simply said "Yeah we can figure out when over our scrolls."
As Calen presented the hilt of his blade towards her she instinctively reached out as if to wield it. With two or three fingers making contact she changed her mind, putting her hands behind her back whilst nodding in agreement with Glas "I think that's fairly common in this line of work, our weapons have played a part in keeping us alive after all.. Well not that we've been in many situations like that, I mean were still students, but for proper ones do and I guess people sorta follow their example, maybe" She honestly had no idea why people gave their weapons names and such, she could never see it as anything other than a tool but it was quite clear that she was in the minority here. "Have you given it a name?" she asked it of Calen but gave a quick inquisitive glance towards Glas as well, she was quite curious about his weapon but didn't want to push if he didn't feel like talking about it.
"You could tell I use a rifle just from what I said and looking at my body?" there was a strange emphasis on the last word, not of anger or offense more concern. "That's, um, really impressive" she said whilst gripping the elbow of her left arm with her right hand. It wasn't that she was too drawn back from what he had deduced, rather it was what more could he read off her. Whilst she still partook in the conversation it was in simple answers, she wasn't really paying attention just caught something about a peaceful fishing mission or something. Instead her mind was racing with paranoid scenario after paranoid scenario trying to figure out what else could be deduced from her appearance and actions. 'I'm underweight would that be enough to deduce that we didn't have much back home, would he question how I can afford to travel to another continent then. Could he think I have some mental or social disorder, is that why they're treating me nice? Can Glas see all this too he just doesn't admit it. What if they can ....'

Please don't apologise, just post whenever you have time. We are aware real life takes precedence and anyway it's not been that long between posts.
'But is it normal because everyone else does it or because it works? Ever since I came here everyone is so sure that what they know is true even when it is all they have known or they meet people with nigh opposing opinions. But everyone does it, even I, if I don't clean this nameless piece of metal every night I get a fuzzy feeling like I forgot to brush my teeth. How many times does something need to be said before it becomes truth?' Calen pauses for breath before realising he had gone off on a bit of a tangent and gave both Glas and Diana apologetic looks while he was stowing away his weapon.
Straightening his tie Calen quick collects himself and continues without mentioning his previous tirade. 'Well I suppose once I finish laughing up a lung at the sight of a Beowulf trying to use a rifle I'd have to think of something.' Calen tried to laugh off Glas's point but then continued in a more serious tone. 'It's important to know your limitations but range weapons aren't king, anything can be overcome with enough determination and care. Hopefully my supply of the former will off set my lack of the latter.'
Calen took his time formulating his response to Diana about his perceptions. He knew others didn't see things the same way as he did but didn't grasp the implied invasion of privacy. 'When I was younger it was simply a game, something to keep the mind occupied but I'm afraid it has become another habit I seem unable to break. When you see a rock or a tree or a person it is simply a rock or a tree or a person but I've never been stop at such simplistic descriptors. It's helpful academically, though not as much as you might think in the sparing arena as with the amount of time everyone spends training it shouldn't be that hard finding out how people fight. I do apologise if I have erred I would like to make it up to you. Perhaps I could walk you through how I see things? Using myself as the model to keep things fair.

"All that from memory, huh? Pretty impressive, Diana. Don't got the best memory meself, so that kind of thing is way beyond what I imagine doin'." Of course, being perfectly honest anything that had to do with art was pretty much beyond him. Diana must have had patience out the wazoo. And just a touch of some kinda social awkwardness as well, but who am I to judge? She at least seemed to understand what he meant about weapons. They were in a Huntsman school after all, keeping one's weapon in tip-top shape was important above nearly anything else.
But when the question inevitably shifted over to him and his weapon. Yet another time that finer details about his combat details were brought up, and Glas wasn't sure that he was comfortable with giving up any of the details. Then again... It's just the name. Not like they can guess what my weapon does just from it's name alone. Eh... Glas shrugged slightly. "Yeah, it's got a name: Lackadaisy. Came up with it myself. Really the only part of the weapon I had a real hand in doin', but I'm glad with what I got."
Then the conversation shifted over to how Calen was able to deduce what sort of weapon Diana was likely to use just by looking at her, and the girl certainly did look a bit uncomfortable from the whole thing. Eh, if he'd been doing this as a kid, maybe that's why he doesn't feel weird doin' it to her. Still... Just a wee bit rude, even if he didn't mean it.
Glas reached over and rested a hand on Diana's shoulder comfortingly as Calen went on about how he was going to offer to show them how he saw things from his perspective. She looked like she could have used a change of subject into something a little less related to how he was paying a lot of attention to her body. "Actually, got a bit of a question myself for the two of ye: What do you know about the whole dorm situation? Teams to a room, partners to a room? How's that all supposed to work out?"

Fighting her instinct to dismiss his compliment she simply said "Thanks, Glas. That's, that's very kind of you to say" the two had been remarkably supportive of her little hobby. She didn't want to overstay their generous treatment so she figured if there was anything else to say they would probably ask her later.
"Lackadaisy" she repeated, absentmindedly asking "Does it mean anything?" she blinked and her brain seemed to wake up and started to freak out, even without seeing his face it was obvious that he didn't want to discuss his weapons. He had offered up some information and distracted she asked an incredibly insensitive question. Stumbling over her own words she blurted "Sorry I didn't mean to pry like that I was just curious, I never gave a name to my weapon so just wondered about why... eh sorry I wasn't, I, forget I asked."
"I guess it's a bit of everything in a way, it works, so everyone does it, so it becomes normal? I think, and therefore it's truth? erm, Yeah I'm just confused now. I think it's just good practice in general, can't say I do it every day but I tend to keep it in the lockers here." she liked being able to walk around the campus without being armed to the teeth, and would only bring it to class or when leaving the school. "A beowolf sniper is a frightening albeit humorous thought" matching his more serious tone she added "I didn't mean to imply anything I was just surprised, most students seem to have both ranged and melee capacities. But I'm sure you're better suited than I am. If I get overrun my rifle will be useless and my swordplay can't match yours I'm sure."
Still standing in a very defensive pose gripping her elbow she snapped out of her frantic thoughts, speaking in a fractionally higher pitch. "I didn't mean to overreact, it's just that... As you have undoubtedly already figured out I'm not the most confident and now I don't know what you know about me, if that makes sense. It's an impressive talent, I just, maybe you can show me once we know each other more."
"Yeah each dorm room is for a team, at least that's what I've heard. There are several wings of dorms though not really sure how that works. You heard anything Calen?" she tried her best to regain her regular composure, gladly jumping on Glas' topic

Lackadaisy, I only knew two people who spoke like that. It's as good as any name for a weapon if a bit morbid, maybe I'm not as good as reading people as Miss Farran believes. Calen smiled, opening his mouth to add in his observations but reluctantly decided against it. His game has already got him into trouble once during this conversation and they seemed like good people. Instead Calen simply nodded along with Diana's question about the meaning of Lackadaisy.
'I understand Miss Farran, I've noticed that as well and I appreciate your concern. Unfortunately even if I wanted to add a range weapon it'd be hard to make work, the metal of my weapon is quite rigid meaning neither can it do some of the more exotic transformations I've seen other weapons do nor would it absorb any recoil. That being said, at range my blade is as useless as your rifle in melee so if someone can kite me out, in a match I mean no justification is going to overrule the result.' Calen replied happily, he didn't seem bothered by the fact he'd struggle in the multiple sparing matches and competitions, both inter-kingdom and further afield, although he had be no means told these people the whole story. Controlling what others know about you can a far more effective smokescreen than attempting to hide all knowledge of yourself from others. Maybe that should be Miss Farran's first lesson. Calen continued after a slight pause. 'Of course Miss Farran as soon as you feel comfortable please don't hesitate to call.'
'Yea four person team to a room. I think they have started selecting teams actually, they stagger them to ensure everyone has something to do for their initiation I believe. Team A-S-T-C or Aztec which I'm apart of have only just settled in. It's impressive how much freedom we are given here with the dorms, I wonder how that would measure up at atl-other schools.' Calen quickly corrected himself not wanting to bring up all their seemingly depressive history.
Sorry I added a bit later on, if you had already worked out your reply Junky i'll change it back. Just wanted to set out the timeline in my head a bit.

Glas shrugged slightly. “Eh, I say what I mean. Don’t like sugar coatin’ or tryin’ to mislead people, y’know? Makes things easier for everyone in the long run.” Perhaps his relaxed nature helped to keep his conversations honest, or maybe to some, blunt. His tone never changed to seem like he was openly lying or trying to mislead them, in fact it… Didn’t really change much at all. It was the same neutral tone as when they started. Diana’s tone turned a bit confused upon hearing the name Glas gave his gun, however.
“Doesn’t mean much really. Somethin’ I heard a couple of the older folk say about me from time to time, though they said ‘lackadaisical’. Didn’t seem really fittin’ for a weapon to me, too long and whatnot. So I shortened it down, made it a bit easier to roll off the tongue and everything.” Glas’ hands reflexively went into his coat pockets the more as he talked about his weapon, a tic that even he didn’t realize was happening himself. “Don’t have too much meanin’ behind it really. Gonna be honest, I only really named it when I was headin’ over here to Beacon. Figured I’d need to name it when I got here, y’know? No harm done, Diana.”
Calen has the humility enough to admit where he’s got a weakness, I’ll give ‘im that. Glas thought with a small grin. Even with his weird habit of readin’ people like he does. Guess I can’t say he doesn’t look inward with it at the very least. The talk about his weapon not offering too much in the ‘absorbing recoil’ field made him smile a little more, though.
“Hey, not everyone starts out with all the confidence in the world. All this practice is bound to get some goin’ for ya” Glas reassured. But still, Diana didn’t look like she was enjoying all the talk about herself at the moment. The dorm question was turning the tide of the conversation, and Glas was more than happy to ride it along. Partially because he brought it up in the first place. “Huh, that so? Well I’ll be… Sounds like things are about to get interestin’ for us three then. ‘Specially you, Calen; you’ve already got yerself a group of pals to bunk with.” Huh, already pickin’ teams? Sounds like it’s gonna be my turn up to bad before too long. Might as well get ready for it.
No worries! It gave me more to have Glas think about, so it’s a-ok!

She couldn't help slightly frowning at the words they were using.'Lackadaisy is short for lackadaisical, what..?' Glas obviously knew what the words meant and Calen didn't seem as confused as her so he probably understood them too, reluctantly she figured it had to be a Mistral expression. She made a mental note to check what it meant on her scroll later, assuming she could figure out how to spell it. She was relieved that Glas didn't take issue with her question, once again she was surprised and even envious of how relaxed he seemed to be.
She sighed, letting go of her elbow, and gave a slight smile. Relaxing just a bit. "I, I'm sorry I freaked out. I just got a bit off balance." turning to Glas she added "Yeah I could probably so with just practicing confidence in general. I'll get there eventually."
"I've got my team sorted last week, team H-T-D-G. Haven't done much together so far. Guessing you'll have yours pretty soon Glas." whilst she had really grown attached to her teammates she cared less for being on a team named Hot dog so she left that part out. As she didn't want to outright lie about having been to Atlas she decided to answer as if it was nothing special. "Well at the Atlas academy it's more like a shared apartment, rather than one big dorm room we had tiny individual rooms that all connected to a small common room. Kinda nice to have the privacy honestly."

Calen nodded as Diana explained the differences between the Beacon and Atlas academies. 'Yea I imagine privacy will become an issue, we have one girl on the team but then again she is blind so maybe it's more awkward for the rest of us.' Calen mused out loud. Calen was actually a bit surprised Glas didn't have a team yet but didn't want to bring it up.
'So does anyone have a project they are working on? Personal or for the academy? Some people find a lot of time to do extra-curricular activities and I guess it is important to some sort of short term objective even if it isn't really connected with your longer term goals.' Calen filled in the next silence. 'Helps with motivation.'
'I guess the closest I have would be dance performances but what about you guys?.' Calen continued with a slightly embarrassed tone of voice, this talk about hobbies and projects had reminded him how poorly he had been managing his time recently.

“Still not a worry, Diana. I’m not expectin’ any of ye to be some kind of perfect socialite or anything’. We’re only human; we can mess up a bit. Just gotta make sure to learn from it when we do.” The Atlesian girl really seemed to be worrying about everything when she talked to them. She really didn’t have to. Just a bunch of fellow students hanging out, didn’t have to be all formal and everything. He wasn’t a social master by any definition of the word either, so it was probably what fueled his easygoingness about the whole thing.
The talk of shared room seemed to catch Glas’ attention as well, and he tilted his hooded head slightly as he took the information in. “Huh… alright. It’d be the first time that I’d have to deal with livin’ like that, but no reason to worry about it. Might be interestin’ to have some other folks bein’ around. Won’t be able to avoid that once I get a partner anyway, right?” Glas said with a hint of amusement. It was actually one of the few new experiences he was looking forward to when coming to Beacon. Only time would tell how much he’d appreciate it in the future, though.
“Personal projects? That sorta thing’s out of my league, Calen. I usually don’t plan anythin’ too far ahead or the like. Kinda makes it hard to ruin somethin’ that doesn’t exist, y’know?” All he had planned for himself was whatever his teachers gave him to work on, and that was it. His meditating and such was all just done when he felt like it, planning to do it just wouldn’t have the same effect on him. “It’s worked out pretty well for me so far, so I reckon I’ll just keep goin’ with it.” He wouldn’t even know how to even begin planning ahead for something for himself. Too many factors that could go wrong or change without him knowing, who could really plan anything accurately?

Sorry for not replying in ages. I've gotten rather sick and its exam period so it'll probably be the same for the next weeks, I'll be free proper by mid may. Sorry again
"Thanks, and believe it or not how I am now is better than I used to be. So I am learning, albeit stupidly slowly." she gave a slightly exaggerated smile to make it clear that she was mostly joking. Not necessarily able to pull it off she still tended to go for rather self deprecating humor, thinking that it would be better if she made the critisim as a joke rather than them thinking it later.
Diana was visibly surprised at the news of a blind student but couldn't think of a way to ask how she fights without sounding insensitive, so she thought better of it. "We're an even split so at least I am not the only girl, can't say I'm a big fan of sharing a room. I miss having somewhere more private to go, you know."
She giggled a bit at Glas' response saying "You really have a remarkably relaxed attitude, it's honestly rather refreshing.".
"As for me. Umm, no can't say I really have much in the way of projects. I mean we've already talked a bit about my drawing. Only other thing I've been working is my rifle, making slight adjustments now that I don't have to deal with the cold Atlas climate." She had always liked hearing about other people's hobbies, though right now she just felt that she was failing to be interesting.

A beeping prompted Calen to take his scroll out with a small gesture of apology he stepped out of their triangle and read the message. 'It's been lovely talking with you Miss Farran and Glas but I really must be going' Calen announced sadly as he started to pack up the remaining slices slices.
'Thank you for all your help and answering my questions. If you ever want to talk again please don't hesitate to call' Calen continued before giving an elaborate bow and launching himself away with his semblance clearly heading away from the school grounds.
I'm not very good at small talk irl so I can't really think of much else for Calen to talk about without knowing pop culture of the RWBYverse. But if Glas and Diana have more to say to each other please do

It's fine! I know that life has its way of getting in the way of things we'd rather be doing, but you don't need to worry about it. Just glad to see you back!
Glas chuckled softly. "That's the ticket. Just don't go 'round talkin' down yer talents and you'll keep gettin' better at it all. Not like I got to be this good at nappin' by lyin' around, after all." He'd pause for a little bit. "Actually... don't think about that one too hard. Point is: you don't need to be hard on yerself all the time. If a hobby's not fun for you anymore, it kinda beats the purpose of havin' one, doesn't it?" Climbing was also something Glas found to be pretty enjoyable too, but he'd be sure to drop it if it ever became less than enjoyable for him.
"A quiet place is definitely good to have, yeah. It's where climbin' really comes in handy every once in a while. No quiet places around? Make one. Bound to be a tree or small hill or somethin' to get on top of for some R&R. I can give you some pointers on it if you ever need 'em." She could probably even give him a few pointers on how to deal with being part of a team as well. Glas sure as heck didn't know the first thing about that. "But y'know, a few other people in my life would say I was a bit too relaxed. Can you believe that? I don't think there's such a thing."
Calen was apparently making his exit from their little chat, and Glas nodded at him with his hands still firmly planted in his jacket pockets. "Be seein' you around, Calen. You just might need to nudge me a bit if I don't respond or something'. I'll most likely be... Well y'know." Which then left Glas to carry on his conversation with Diana. Kind of like how their whole conversation began in the first place. He had to chuckle a little bit at that.

Thanks Should hopefully start getting better soon, though this gap hardly helps that point.
With a bit of a teasing tone Diana responded. "Hey, there are people struggling to sleep that wish they were as good at nappin' as you." That... had seemed a lot funnier in her head. Trying to get away from her bad quip she continued in a more sincere tone."The drawing is for myself though I do like the idea of making portraits and such for people, I'm just not there yet. It's one of the reasons I come out here to do my drawing, the shared team bedrooms don't exactly lend themselves to privacy." Afraid that he might think she missed his point she quickly added "And yes, I will try to not be as hard on myself. Force of habit I'm afraid."
"Can't say I've done much climbing in general, and certainly not trees. Don't see a lot of significant growth outside of caves in Mantle." She had a bit of a troubled expression at the comment about being too relaxed, something she had just complimented him for. "That's not a nice thing to say about someone. Being relaxed isn't the same as being apathetic, and considering how nice you've been to a stranger you certainly aren't that. Does that sort of thing come up often?"
"Oh. Umm, well it really has been a pleasure Calen. Thank you again for the sweets and the tips for shopping and ingredients. Feel free to send a message if there's anything you want to talk about some other time." She turned back to Glas but hesitated a bit unsure of if he wanted to continue the conversation or not, after all this had started by her interrupting his meditation.

“That’s just somethin’ I can’t figure out, personally” Glas said with a tiny shrug. “Sleepin’ should be something’ pretty easy for anyone to do. Kinda hard to teach on top of all of that. Although maybe I could give it a shot, at least get an extra nap in durin’ the day, eh?” A grin peeked out from under his obscuring hood, directed at Diana for her little jest. Glas was sure that if put up a bunch of fliers around Beacon advertising ‘Sleeping Lessons’ that he’d get a few bites. On the other hand… It wounded like it was a bit too much work for something that was supposed to be relaxing. A sort of relaxation paradox.
Diana at least was starting to show she had a pretty level head about her drawing at the very least. “Good, you don’t want to rush yourself with somethin’ like that. Take it at yer own pace, and sooner or later it’ll be as natural as breathin’. Tryin’ to force somethin’ like that would just make you end up hatin’ it in the end.” The young man nodded slightly to emphasize his solidarity with the situation. Being a little self-conscious about one’s art would certainly make trying to practice it surrounded by other people a difficult task. I mean, unless Diana here goes on lockin’ herself in the closet or something’ to try and draw in peace. Heh… It certainly give her roommates something to talk about, at any point.
“I feel ya. Some habits are pretty hard to go and break, but they break eventually. Not sayin’ that you’ll turn into a master artist or somethin’, but you’ll at least be comfortable with it all. Best state of mind to be in, if you ask me.” The young man slumped forward slightly as he felt another good nap rearing its head, but he fought back against it slightly so he could keep his conversation going with Diana for the time being. Even if she didn’t have too much practice climbing, it didn’t mean the end of their talk either. Especially since something he said seemed to catch her attention.
“Eh, some of my teachers don’t take too kindly to fallin’ asleep durin’ their lessons. Take it as some kinda sign that I don’t care about my lessons or somethin’. May have fallen asleep once or twice while someone was talkin’ to me as well, so it’s not like I can’t blame ‘em for getting’ mad for no reason. Just wish they could see it wasn’t a reason to be mad in the first place, y’know?”
