Nolla Ayani
« on: January 22, 2017, 09:37:19 AM »
CHARACTER

Name: Nolla Ayani

Age: 21, born Frost 11th, 79 AC

Species and Gender: Female Bison Faunus

Symbol:  WIP

Occupation: WIP, 4th year...but which academy!? (likely Beacon)

Appearance: WIP, Sharp nordic features, body-type like Korra, but much taller, suffers melanism; dyes hair white and has white tattoo-like markings, likely henna dyes, over many parts of her body. FAUNUS TRAIT: Small curved horns curling up on the sides of her head.

History: WIP, Probably fairly basic, entered into a combat academy and transferred to the graduate combat academy through regular means. Large family of bison faunus, maybe some humans/other faunus types. Not rich, so has a part time job to help build/maintain weapons, equipment, and supplies. Family helps out on certain occasions, like pitching in on her birthday for something.

History Version 1: ShowHide
Nolla was born into a humongous family in one of the many villages close to Vale. The majority of her family were farmers, and coincidentally, the majority of them were also bison Faunus. There was the occasional human or other ungulate-type faunus, but when mentioning the Ayani family, ‘bison’ is usually the first word that comes to mind. The words ‘Big Family’ didn’t just mean widespread either; the majority of the Ayani were fairly large in stature. Thick boned and often barrel chested, the majority of the Ayani family were often physically strong, both from hereditary traits, and from the gruelling work they put in to make their lien.

Nolla was different though, and not just because she dreamed of becoming a huntress. She was born with a condition known as melanism, which essentially darkens all the pigments in her body to the point where her iris’, hair, nails, and skin are all pitch black; she was the metaphorical ‘black sheep’, a nickname given to her by her siblings and cousins. Unlike the moniker given to her by her family, she shared very little traits with the sheepish animal, and remained ready to shut down any notion that she was anything but ready to embrace the life of a huntress, to experience glory and valour in the defense of her fellow countrymen. Whenever she was done with her chores, she’d read about the exploits of the huntsman and huntresses any chance she could. She would memorize the stories, the fairy tales, the legends, and recount them to her extended family whenever they had a gathering with as much flair and enthusiasm she could muster.

Nolla’s family wholeheartedly encouraged her to follow her dreams. Many of the Ayani family were simple folk who had little desire in the way of grandiose adventures, skirting the edges of life and death with every dangerous encounter. But they were more than willing to support one of their own who had such a burning desire within them, potentially somebody who could make them proud and bring honour to their family name. Very few of the Ayani strayed from their paths as farmers, and of those who would become huntsman/huntresses, Nolla was only the fourth in their lineage to aspire to such things.

After a certain point, Nolla stopped reading so much about the tales of the huntsman and huntresses, and began actually training for her entry into Signal Academy. She knew nothing about weapons or fighting or dust…but she had certain tools available to her, to condition her body. She took on extra chores that were intended to push her limits. She started running every day, stretching, and lifting weights. When she was nine years old, she even began to wear weighted clothing, every day, nearly all day. At first it was difficult to really manage anything after the first few days of wearing the weighted clothes, but by the time she was old enough to apply to Signal Academy, she was already accustomed to wearing over sixty pounds of evenly distributed weight.

Throughout her training at Signal, she continued to wear her weighted clothing underneath her formal wear, during study, when she slept, and even during exercise and weapons training. Many of her fellow students thought she was a bit peculiar for choosing to slow herself down with such heavy weights, but her instructors saw potential in her choice of extreme conditioning. They encouraged her to add even more weights throughout her time at Signal, pushing her past her limits during training.

One day during a rudimentary obstacle course, Nolla came last, as she usually did. Frustrated and exhausted from such heavy weights always slowing her down, she threw a fit in the middle of the course and began to cry. One of the instructors came up to her, smiling, and told her to run the course again. She didn’t see the point, but then he told her to run it without the extra weights. It was a strange thing. She’d become so accustomed to wearing them, it skipped her mind she could even take them off during training. When she ran the course again, however, she’d managed to set the record time for that obstacle course. It was as if she could fly, moving was so easy. She was lighter than even a feather, able to jump higher, run faster, and roll out of every landing as if she’d leapt down at half the height. It was for this reason that from that day onwards, Nolla continued to wear her weighted clothing without complaint, eventually supplanting it with armour.

It wasn’t until she’d entered Beacon Academy that she’d earned a new nickname; The Black Knight. Fitting, really, considering her prior nickname and desire to leave it behind. Of all the students who passed the entrance exams, Nolla was one of the few who had conditioned herself to wear heavy armour into battle for extended periods of time, and of those who had, none had trained to the same extent. Wearing armour wasn’t exactly a skill per say, but when she entered her first sparring tests wearing her full gear it was hard not to gape in awe. The most peculiar thing, however, was that despite all of her training, all of her dedication, all of her own exploits were earned without the use of her semblance. She’d trained meticulously to earn proficiency in a number of applications of Aura, but that was the most she could manage. It is her highest hope, that in her fourth year of training at Beacon Academy, that she’ll finally be able to unlock her semblance.

Personality: WIP, Many traits derived from Bison; Social, courageous, predictable, simple.

Aura and Semblance: WIP NO IDEA

Combat Behavior: WIP Utilizes customized folding-tech heavy plate armour that has been pieced together and modified over her eight years of combat training and study as a defensive measure, helps her survivability in the fray. Certainly a front line fighter first and foremost, but has come up with methods of dealing with mid to long range opponents for short durations. Understands her weaknesses and relies on teammates to cover them when necessary.

WEAPON ONE

Name: WIP Shield (insert clever name here)

Primary Form: WIP Cylindrical tower shield, similar to Roman design.

Secondary Form: WIP Shield splits in the center, with the central boss revealing two pairs of barrels for smg weapons. Still acts as a shield, but smaller, in each hand, protecting from the sides while the guns are operated.

Dust Functions: WIP Kinetic dust is able to propel a number of spikes downwards into the ground when the tower shield is in its primary form, to instead act as a barricade. Kinetic dust charges are always prepared and ready to go. The shots are single-round, and must be reloaded after every use. Kinetic dust is also utilized in the smg rounds hidden within the secondary form.

History: WIP

WEAPON TWO

Name: WIP Plate Armour (insert clever name here)

Primary Form: WIP The armour itself only has one form, but there are multiple functions within the armour itself. Spools reels and pulleys are attached to the back, waist, and arms. Metal cables run from the spools on the back and waist, and down the arms through the pulleys and reels. The ends of the cables are tipped in rigid, rod-shaped structures with several holes drilled through them. Harpoon tips, grappling hooks, and carabiners can be attached to the rods, amongst other things. Using Kinetic dust as propellant, the armour is capable of firing these rod-tipped cables long distances (TBD how long). There are two rods on the back of each wrist, two rods on each shoulder, and one rod on either side of the waist.

In addition there are retractable spikes attached to the heels, which can help plant the armour firmly in the ground (more on reasoning later, probably uses kinetic dust for launch and miniature spools of wire to retract them on the legs). Blades on the forearms and teeth on the tips and heels of the foot fold out for when climbing/hand-to-hand is necessary.

Under academy I suggest you check under teams thread and see who still needs members for their team*hint*hint, better then waiting around hoping you can find three others that fit your needs, unless of course you don't want a team for this character.
Appearance what kind of facial expression is their resting face? This isn't something usually brought up for appearance but I think it's pretty important.
Is this a tribe outside the city or?

SHANKS for the heads up! I took a look at the 4th year team awaiting a 4th member, and they look pretty melee heavy atm. As for wanting a team with this char? TOTES DO! :D

As for the resting appearance, I'll take that one into account, thanks!

Tribes outside the city...I read that in the character creation segment, that if we're from a little village that hasn't been created in the Worldbuilding section, that it's not going to be relevant very much. I don't know if I should just go ahead and say they were like, a large wandering tribe or if the city life is actually just better. Maybe have them be mostly farmers or something?

It may just be the paragraph structure but has Nolla been doing weight training since before she was nine years old? More out of curiosity than anything else but that does seem a bit weird.

Also considering how confused Pyrra is that Jaune hasn't unlocked his semblance in the show as first years then Nolla not having hers as a fourth year could be unheard of. I like the idea but it seems a bit strange. Personally I'd give her a weak semblance or a passive one like Qrow's which she isn't aware of.

Mmmm, passive semblances. Those ones are difficult to come up with compared to others...but I am a FONT of ideas! >:D

But yeah, I was thinking about it, and honestly, I might just completely re-do her history. I'll keep the Bison Faunus Farmer Family thing going for sure, but I don't know. It's not unheard of for kids to do weight training before 10 years of age, though it is fairly uncommon I'd think. Normally, when I make a character, I work out all the mechanics beforehand since I find trying to match mechanics to history is bothersome in games like D&D. With freeform games like this however, it's hella fun to write the history/personality first and then see what sort of semblance I can make that relates to it, since that's where it comes from in the first place. I just wrote her not knowing her semblance for a lack of idea's, really XD

Thinking more about passive semblances the harder thing would be balancing it with the active ones, although personally it'd add variety which is always a good thing.

Is there something in particular you don't like about Nolla's backstory? It seems fine to me.

As for semblance ideas the Bison were a symbol of abundance and life for many native american tribes so tying it into that could fit nicely. Maybe an aura regen buff? Or passive healing? Not as flashy as some but you might need simplicity if it's the first passive semblance accepted on this forum.

Seeing as you have good ideas given by the community I won't disrupt that, instead I'm just going to suggest some small things:
1. Make her Aura better at Regeneration. Surely, with her heaving weighted clothes around everywhere, her muscles must be strained at almost all times. This could explain the reason she was able to do such a feat at a young age.
2. Name the shield Aegis/Bastion. Both mean "impregnable fortress" to a certain degree, and since the shield even has guns... "coughcoughoverwatchcough"

Thanks for all the ideas and support peeps! :D

KING: It's not so much that I didn't like her backstory so much as it's not accomplishing very much with the amount of words I've written. The more I can convey with the least amount of filler, the better. As for your semblance idea, it is a very good one imo, especially in conjunction with what Monster suggested...but I'm looking for something not quite so common. I've been going through semblances of approved characters, and I'm seeing certain themes emerge. You've definitely given me some inspiration with what you've suggested though, and I think I have a better idea of what I'd like to do with her.

MONSTER: Oddly enough, I wasn't even considering Overwatch when I did that lol. I was actually looking to historical references to come up with weapon ideas, and in particular, King Henry the 8th. His honour guard of like, 50 dudes carried shields with built-in rifles that could punch through any armour in the day.

You could look at the superpower wiki to get some semblance ideas: http://powerlisting.wikia.com/wiki/Superpower_Wiki

Thanks Cap! I appreciate the link, but I'd rather come up with something on my own unique and tailored and drawn from my character's history and personality, than simply look at a list of superpowers like it's a McDonald's menu and make my choice that way. Right meow, I've  come to the decision that this character will definitely utilize a passive semblance, and that IMO, semblances that are passive should have as much benefit as they do detriments (taking Qrow as an example, his balance is that while Misfortune hinders his enemies, it also hinders his allies with equal impunity). After searching through an egregious amount of Semblances on this site and seeing the relative lack of inspiration or deviation from the typical (though there are some amazing semblances out there, for sure), as well as taking some of the suggestions that have been presented, I think I've come close to realizing what her super special power will be.
