First Year 1v1 bracket- Semifinal: Camelia Sol vs Juno Vert
« on: April 08, 2019, 10:50:38 PM »
Hunter shuffles a little bit in discomfort as the weight on his shoulder started to be unbearable. Though, Hunter had gotten used to things like this, especially for sights like this. His beloved partner was cutely sleeping on his shoulder, clearly tired of the toll that the festival had brought about on the two. Noticing the signal to start the next match, the speakers blare to life from Hunter’s voice, albeit softer in consideration of his sleeping wife next to him. ”Welcome back everyone to the Vytal Festival tournament, I’m going to keep it short, sweet, and simple so we can get to the fights, especially since it's the semifinals.” Hunter quickly takes a look at the two combatants coming up and sigh in relief as they’re rather simple to introduce once again. ”We have gravity girl Camelia Sol, who’ll bring down the competition, against Juno Vert. He had a rather impressive showing in the first two fights, but I still think that there’s a lot of compensation. What for? Who knows." Shifting himself into a more comfortable position, Prim would rest well and Hunter would not feel shoulder pain for the rest of the fight. "Anyways, I hope our semifinalists give us a good showing!" While louder than he wanted, it seems Prim was still asleep, which is good.

Starting the spinner from his end, the now familiar holographic image of a lottery machine appears on all sides of the arena. The spinners spun so quickly, making it nearly impossible to make out the passing words. It ticked through the options slower and slower until it finally stopped on Forest and Swamp.

From the arena arose two separate sides that thematically line up with the arena’s choice of environment. On Camelia’s side, large trees cover the entire area. Noticeably, the trees are numerous and encourages movement up and between the trees with lots of trunks that can serve as platforms to fight on, with a singular large tree branching into the middle of the arena. Although abundant, the trees do not provide decent enough cover due to how thin the trunk is, lest you move deeper into the forest. As for Juno, a few trees arose as well, albeit slightly smaller and much more thick with vines. In terms of inconveniences, it mostly obscures vision instead of preventing movement. However, the floor is significantly more wet and murkey. Definitely muddy too, hiding broken weapons that can be used for improvisation, with some swamp houses that can be used as cover and vantage points.

(A coin flip has decided that Camelia will get the first post. The arena size is identical to that of the 1v1 arena in the show, however, it features scaled down biomes to fit the size. Good luck, and may the best combatant win.)

Alright! Time to get back into the action. It felt like forever since Camelia had... um, well, let's say 'since the last battle'. It'd been remarkably more tame than the destructive bout against Sam, since once she got her opponent in a gravity field, they'd basically just collapsed onto the ground and decided to surrender instead of getting jabbed with a sword until their Aura dropped enough.

Taking Orion out with her left hand and half of Unity with her right, she carefully began to step forward between the quite decent trunks. Nothing you could hide behind, but definitely mature trees. There was little underbrush as well, making her think that this was a curated forest rather than a natural one - not that that actually meant anything. It was a tournament environment. Those trees might be 3D printed for all she knew.

While the Sun didn't directly reach the forest floor, enough light went through the leaves to allow for clear vision. As she moved, she kept her eyes and ears alert - she had no idea what she was up against. Quietly, in the honestly quite relaxing surroundings, her thoughts died down until nothing but awareness remained.

Semifinals. This was where the young man fell during the last tournament. His opponent, Camelia was known to be capable, especially given what she did to his teammate, Sam. Two reasons I can't lose here. he thought to himself, taking a deep breath as he hung his jacket up by the entrance to the arena.

He was becoming rather familiar with the Swamp biome at this point, it's small rickety paths, low hanging trees, fallen trunks, and small huts offering decent enough foot space for him to fight in his proper element. The Forest biome, however, would clearly be ideal for what he wanted to do. If he could manage to keep the fight over there, he'd have an easier time maintaining his pressure. But then came the issue of her semblance...

The young man drew his Type J as he mulled over potential ideas on counteracting her gravity wells, the blade itself splitting in half to reveal the slab of dust conductive metal that rested within. Careful to avoid the murky waters, Juno depressed both triggers on the blade's hilt to charge an upcoming explosion, methodically watching the other side of the arena for any trace of the opponent as he ducked behind one of the huts.

As Camelia kept walking, she rapidly started to glance the other side of the arena between the trees. Barely. She couldn't really make out what the environment was, but there were trees.

Now, what would she do? Keep going forward or stay still and wait for them? On the one hand, the trees provided some cover but that rapidly diminished as the distance closed, not to mention they'd hinder direct combat. On the other hand, moving outside basically meant she'd turn herself into a sitting duck (with a shield) to anyone out there. Not to mention she knew nothing of the lay of the land beyond what she could see.

Deciding to take the second option, Camelia crouched behind her shield, keeping her sword in hand. The only thing that could be seen from the other side of Orion was her head going from the bridge of her nose and up.

As the young man’s stole a moment to look past the side of the shed, his intense gaze sweeping across the other side of the arena. Eventually, his eyes fell upon the glint of a shiny, round shield through the underbrush, with a distinct head of long brown hair peeking out from the top. So she was waiting as well? Maybe she hadn’t seen him yet. Quick to duck back behind the relative cover of the shed, Juno considered his options. Direct engagement was reckless, but could help get an early lead. However, if she was prepared, she could quickly turn things around. The forest biome itself was a more stable ground to fight on, with no threat of crumbling pathways or mud hindering movement. If he were to engage, doing so on her side of the field may be his best call.

However, outside of a general idea of what her semblance can do, he didn’t know much regarding her abilities. He’d need to test the waters, be selective about how he engages. Maybe hit and run? Hit and run could work at first, there’s certainly enough foliage to hide in.

The young man stole another peek past the side of the shed as he pondered his options, continuing to charge his blade.

After a moment passed, Camelia glanced something move through the barrier of trees. She wasn't quite sure what it'd been - a metallic glint, followed by a large, dark speck before it vanished from view. Whatever the metal was, though, was also definitely in the hands of the opponent.

Well, he was doing something so as far as she was concerned, her strategy was still viable. She could still wait. ...For now.

The young man began to grow impatient as he quickly peeked back over the corner, eyes narrowing as he noted that his opponent also refused to move. At this point it seemed the two were at a stalemate. Though... It seemed odd that someone who would potentially outrange him would sit still for so long after he all but gave away his position twice. Maybe her range wasn't as vast as he thought?

Juno took a deep breath, opting to test her range a bit. With the flick of his wrist, a series of small, blue hardlight plates began to form under his palm, quickly taking the form of one of his disks. The young man swayed a bit as he stood up, his body leaning back before suddenly darting past his cover. In one fluid motion, the man lunged forward, throwing the projectile across the field to where he had spotted his target before ducking behind the trunk of one of the Swamp Biome's trees.

As Camelia was about to start itching for action, a blue flicker appeared on the edge of the forest, lodged itself in a tree a few meters deep and vanished.

Okay, whatever the FUCK that'd been, at least she was safe. What would she do now, however? She could use Orion to attack a certain range, but unless she just made a wall of ice with trees stuck through it, it'd be a somewhat moot point. Sure, her semblance had a longer range, but she couldn't see the guy any better.

First and foremost, she was a close quarters combatant. Her shield and swords were a good indication, as she could turtle most ranged attacks until their opponent was in striking distance - or until she lost patience and decided to get closer herself. So far, so good - they seemed to be getting closer. Camelia adjusted her footing and refocused on her environment, not intending to be caught by surprise at any point.

Again.

The lack of change on the main scoreboard and the loss of his projectile prompted the young man to shake his head. He had missed. However, the lack of any retaliation gave him a bit more faith in the possibility that he outranged her. Maybe... Maybe he didn't necessarily need to go in against her. Nodding to himself at the realization, Juno released the triggers of Type J, keeping the blade at its current charge.

A light grin played at Juno's lips as he summoned another two disks beneath his palm, poking out from behind the tree again to lob the two in her general direction. If he could get her to try and rush in, he could have better control over the flow of the fight, as well as a greater capacity to capitalize on any of her mistakes. As such, Juno watched as the two disks arced toward their target, leaning a bit further out of cover as he intentionally gave away his position.

Waiting seemed to be a big part of Camelia's strategy, she found. Boring? Yes. Useful? Eeehhh, probably?

Meanwhile, two more flicks of light appeared, this time aimed far better than before. One of them whizzed into her shield with a loud clang and the other landed in a tree right next to her with a deafened thokk. Now that it was standing still, she was able to see a translucent, blue disk embedded in the tree's trunk, shortly vanishing into nothingness and leaving behind only a large indent in the wood.

...Huh. So that's what it was. Disks. Seemed like hardlight? How many variations did the guy have programmed?

Focusing back onto the general surroundings ahead of her, she distinctly saw her opponent leaning out, almost definitely baiting her. She didn't move, though, deciding that Orion's secondary mode could wait until she knew what the other party was planning.

The young man's eyes narrowed as his opponent remained content with waiting, only to shake his head before ducking back behind his own cover. He had already burned through three constructs, and while they'd be back in short order, he wasn't about to throw away his best defensive option for another shot at poking a hornet's nest at range. But like hell was he going to approach her, her range was still unknown, and her defenses seemed solid enough to halt a direct advance. Maybe he wasn't presenting enough of a target? It was definitely risky to expose further than he had, but still... This crowd didn't come here to see two students have a staring contest.

"Gods, this is stupid." the young man muttered to himself as he stood up, rolling his shoulders back and tightening his grip on Type J before leisurely walking out of cover, maintaining his gaze on the shield-covered across the arena. After slightly closing the distance with his opponent, however, the young man stopped, a hand at his hip as he tapped his foot, the tip of his blade held near the wooden walkway. Honestly, if this didn't prompt some kind of response, nothing would.

After waiting a bit more, Camelia witnessed her opponent lose patience before she did, strolling directly into her line of sight. And stare right at her. Then he proceeded to walk closer - but not close enough to be within reach of Orion - and halt, tapping his foot.

Oh, so you wanted to taunt, huh? Well, two could play at this game. Reaching back and onto the ground, Camelia scoured the surface with her hand in the hopes of finding - ah, exactly what she wanted. A pebble barely large enough to be called such. Resuming her previous stance, she let the rock - now surrounded by a dark purple glow - float gently upwards with her semblance. Once it reached just above the shield, another glow combined with the first one and, two seconds later, the stone flew forth towards the man standing opposite the arena. She took the opportunity to switch Orion to secondary mode at the same time, hoping the taunt would also work as a distraction.

(Pebble: 1%, 3% if somehow nails an eye)

The young man's brow furrowed as a purple glow began to emanate from behind his opponent's shield, his eyes narrowing upon the pebble that floated just about eye level. That thing was definitely going to get launched in his direction, but the question was, how fast was it going to-

Juno instinctively brought his hand to his face as the rock was suddenly propelled forward, colliding with his palm as his fingers wrapped around it, smoking slightly as it came to a stop. Okay. That fast. Gods, that stung. It was a neat trick, though. Nodding in recognition, the young man shook out some of the pain in his palm before focusing a bit of his aura to his hand and throwing the stone back, returning the object at a similar speed to how it arrived. Soon after throwing the stone, however, Juno lunged forward, striking the ground behind him with Type J and using the resulting explosion to propel him forward at a higher velocity. Once he got closer to the shield, the young man extended both legs, readying himself to stomp on his opponent at speed.

Huh. The guy... managed to catch it. Gods, that must've singed a bunch, judging by the faint wisp of smoke. Still, her opponent may well be more sociable than Camelia had initially thought, nodding in acknowledgement of her... attack? Taunt? Whatever it was.

What she expected even less than basic civility, though, was for the pebble to get sent back at anything close to a similar speed. She barely managed to get her head behind her shield out of reflex before the stone bounced off Orion with enough force that she felt the impact. Okay, what the hell was that? HOW did he do that?

As her eyes got back just above the edge of her rampart, an explosion blasted off from where the enemy was. Her eyes zipped to the incoming motion, but too late to be of any use. As she attempted to prop herself to take the blow, the aforementioned blow landed, sending her cartwheeling a few meters backwards. The fact that Orion was in a concave shape instead of a shield's usual convex helped channel the blow and momentum towards herself, if anything.

For an instant, Camelia just lay on her back, mildly stunned, before coming back to her senses and getting back on her feet with a quick spin, gaining a foot or so of distance. All she had to do now was get him in Orion's area of effect and fire.
